100 Women Who Care was just the beginning! Kamloops has always had a reputation for being a community that cares however public funding for private citizens in great need is a scarce resource even in a compassionate community such as ours. Hard working, dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers stretch their money and manpower as far as it can possibly go to support our growing community but for some these efforts are just not enough. A small group of women decided they would try to fill this gap and help support our city by creating the organization called 100 Women Who Care, Kamloops Chapter, where driving grassroots awareness and encouraging others to get involved is important. 100 Women Who Care was founded by Maryanne Bower, Shannon Wallis and Bobbie Harrison with the goal of supporting local charities with the help of 100 local women. Their numbers have grown passed the 100 mark since they officially became a recognized society in June 2014. Members are encouraged to “lean in” by donating $100 every three months ($400 annually) and if they find an organization they click with, to start leaning in to volunteering their time or skills to the project of choice. The original founders fell

in love with the simplicity of the 100 Women Who Care model and knew from the beginning it would be a great fit for the women of Kamloops. After researching various other successful chapters and sharing their vision that Kamloops and area could benefit by a home chapter, the Hotel 540 jumped on board and committed to sponsor a meeting space for the group in the fall of 2014. These women support the local non-profit and charitable organizations working in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) as well as deserving citizens who can prove need and have an established charity working on their behalf. There are so many amazing groups that are working to make our communities better, healthier, stronger places to live that just don’t receive the funding necessary to meet their operating goals. Now that their numbers are well passed 100 the organization continues to welcome as many new members as they can attract to become involved because it gives them the chance to impact the lives of even more community members who work, live and play in Kamloops. The opportunity to network with like-minded women, meet new and interesting people and helping a local charity are a few of the best rea-

sons to become a member of the 100 Women Who Care. The guidelines and intake process were customized for the Kamloops Chapter to keep everything running smoothly and although it does take time to become a member the rewards are well worth the effort. All members are kept well informed on what is going on, the approved charities or individuals get their donation on the night of the meeting and the women go home feeling accomplished that they are giving back to our fantastic city. A full 100 per cent of the funds go to the chosen charity as no administrative or membership fees are collected and each case is voted on by member’s in good standing to ensure each member has a say in where the funds are dispersed. All donations are tax deductible and the charitable organizations eligible for nomination must have been established for at least one year. To become a member or for additional information check out their website at www.100womenkamloops.com and for upcoming events they have a Facebook community as well called “100 Women Who Care Kamloops”. The next meeting will be held on Monday, May 4 at Hotel 540. Trina Budai

BC Community Achievement Award 2015 Thirty-five British Columbians were honored at the twelfth annual British Columbia Community Achievement Awards’ ceremony held at Government House in Victoria on April 24. Honorable Judith Guichon, OBC, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia and Honorable Coralee Oakes, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development presented each recipient with a BC Community Achievement Award medallion and certificate. Keith Mitchell, QC represented the British Columbia Achievement Foundation, the award’s presenting organization. “Each and every recipient honored today represents the best of British Columbia,” said Minister Oakes. “They are everyday citizens from throughout the province whose contributions, leadership and inspiration have helped shape BC. It is a privilege to recognize their achievements.” “Today’s honorees exemplify what it is to go above and beyond; to do what needs to be done and to give without question their time and energy for the betterment of their communities,” said Mr. Mitchell. “These are the people who participate in board and committee rooms, far exceed their job descriptions and willingly share their talents of organizing, coaching, fundraising, innovating and mentoring. Christopher Seguin was the Kamloops recipient of the BC Community Achievement Award. Christopher is a community leader in Kamloops who volunteers generously and in-

spires others to do the same. Vice president of Advancement for Thompson Rivers University, Christopher and his team have seen fundraising increase substantially for research, capital projects and student assistance. He is an active Rotarian where among his initia-

tives was the introduction of community dinners for low income families. He resurrected the Kamloops Marathon, founded an annual Music in the Round evening and is a director and instructor with the Bladerunner Leadership Program for at risk youth.

Firefighter spring training coming to Kamloops Kamloops Fire Rescue and the City of Kamloops are pleased to host the 2015 Volunteer Firefighters Association of BC Spring Training Seminar in Kamloops. This annual training seminar brings together volunteer firefighters from throughout British Columbia for three days of intense educational training necessary for the safe performance of their duties in their respective communities. There will also be suppliers demonstrat-

ing equipment and apparatus related to the firefighting industry. This year organizers are anticipating over four hundred volunteer firefighters and their families to spend their weekend in Kamloops. This year’s seminar will be held May 1 to 3 at the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Campus Activity Centre and surrounding grounds, as well as at the Kamloops Fire Rescue Training Facility. Firefighters will be training in live

fire scenarios, auto extrication, technical rescue, search and rescue techniques, Rapid Intervention (RIT), and other valuable skills. There will be a public open house on Saturday, May 2 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Campus Activity Centre at TRU. It will include a bouncy castle, various fire engines and equipment, manufacturer’s displays and the opportunity to watch some of the training sessions.

Educational event to discuss social barriers youth face Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society will be hosting its tenth annual conference ‘Locked Out: Youth Pathways to Success’ on Friday, May 8. This conference will discuss difficulties youth face when transitioning into adulthood and will take place at the Plaza Hotel located at 405 Victoria Street from 8:15 am to 4:00 pm. This year’s conference is focusing on the challenges of entering the adult world and assuming responsibility for their own lives. While young people are continuing to develop the skills and abilities to manage their lives, they have parents, extended families

and friends to guide them. Unfortunately there are many youth that do not have the advantage of these types of supports. “We all know youth who come from supportive families and they find it challenging to secure employment and complete their education. Can you imagine how difficult this must be for youth who don’t have those advantages?” asks Louise Richards, executive director of the Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society. Our keynote speaker is Gale Stewart, founder and executive director of Aunt Leah’s Place. With over 30 years experi-

ence working with marginalized youth and having been a foster care parent herself, she is uniquely qualified to speak about the challenges facing youth today, especially those aging out of the foster care system. This will be an educational event that brings together employers, service providers, government, students and community members to discuss the social barriers youth experience within our community and explore solutions. At the conference, the Society will be announcing the recipient of its annual Women’s Educational Bursary, established to assist

women with removing barriers to self sufficiency. The Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society, established in 1973, is a non-profit agency which provides services to people who are in conflict with the law at some level. With an emphasis on the needs of women and youth, the society provides education, like this conference, advocacy, capacity building and safe, secure and affordable housing. Participants can pre-register for the conference at the Kamloops Elizabeth Fry Society, 827 Seymour Street or online at www.kamloopsefry.com.

End of an era When the doors of the Continental Barber Shop close today, it will mark the end of an era with a new chapter still to come. Stylist John DeCicco will be hanging up the scissors so to speak, and will be looking forward to spending more time with family and friends in his retirement. While John established the Continental Barber Shop here in downtown Kamloops, his styling roots harken back to the original Continental Barber Shop at 1st Avenue and Commercial Drive in the heart of Little Italy in Vancouver. It was 1961, haircuts were $1.25 and a gallon of gasoline was

35 cents – the equivalence of eight cents a litre. After leaving Vancouver, John and his family moved to Kamloops where John also worked his craft at the Hub City Barber Shop and the Brunswick Barber Shop. John will be sorely missed as a downtown fixture however we wish him a healthy, happy retirement.

Young adult horror novelist in town next week Joel A. Sutherland, acclaimed author, will be presenting a free book reading at St. Andrews on the Square on May 4 from 3 to 4pm. A man of many talents, Joel A. Sutherland describes himself as “a cinephile, a dogwalking enthusiast, an avid traveller and a board game master.” But above all else, he loves to read and write. Joel’s first book for Scholastic was Be a Writing Superstar, which features writing tips and interviews with many of Canada’s most well-known authors and illustrators. Joel returned to his preoccupation with all things spooky in Haunted Canada 4, part of the popular Scholastic series. As research for the book, Joel voluntarily checked in to the Olde Angel Inn in Niagara-on-the-Lake in the hopes of determining if the rumors of ghost

appearances had any basis in truth. Watch a video of his ordeal on YouTube to see how he fared! Joel is currently working on Haunted Canada 5 and a young adult horror novel. Joel is a librarian with a special interest in children’s services, and holds a Masters in Library and Information Studies from Aberystwyth University in Wales. He supervises a group of teen library volunteers and

is involved with children’s programs such as the TD Summer Reading Club and Battle of the Books, among others. His greatest professional satisfaction is getting the right kid’s books into the right kid’s hands. It could be that Joel’s appearance as “The Barbarian Librarian” on the Canadian edition of the hit television show Wipeout helped in this mission. But by making it all the way to the third round, he at least proved that “librarians can be just as tough and crazy as anyone else.” Joel lives in southeastern Ontario with wife Colleen, son Charles, daughter Bronwen and their 80-pound goldendoodle, Murphy. Despite their dog’s size, they have still made room in their home for a mountain of books.

A vision becomes reality in affordable housing A corporation owned and controlled by the Kamloops United Church (KUC), Vision 429 Housing Ltd. has already started construction on a 56 unit condominium development located in the downtown core of Kamloops. Purchasers do not need to have any religious affiliations now or in the future and have the unique opportunity to walk to work, access entertainment venues, professional services and so much more from their new condo located on St. Paul Street between 4th and 5th Avenue. The complex will offer five floors with spacious studio, one and two bedroom units for purchase. There are nine foot ceilings, in suite laundry, six energy efficient appliances, a rooftop patio garden with BBQ and spectacular views, a hospitality/ amenity room for special events, secure underground parking for vehicles, bicycles and scooters, restricted entry access, ample storage and some finishing choice options for presale purchasers. 41 units have been allocated specifically for purchasers whose gross household income is less than 85,000 per year and will be required to provide their most recent Notice of Assessment from Revenue Canada, line 150 of their income tax return. KUC’s Home Ownership Plan (HOP) will enable purchasers to meet the regular down

payment purchase requirements with their assistance by carrying ten percent of the purchase price as a second mortgage with no interest that is payable when the condo sells or sooner without penalty. This will make it possible for perspective purchasers who qualify for a mortgage but have been unable to save for a down payment to take that final step into home ownership. In addition, the KUC has also lowered the deposit requirements for HOP units to one percent of the unit price with the stipulation that said units cannot be rented for the first two years. The Kamloops United Church is committed to building a strong and inclusive community and that is their reasoning behind Vision 429 in order to make quality home ownership attainable for as many people as possible. 15 of these quality condos are reserved for those who may wish to secure future home availability and the owners will be able to rent their units out. The presale purchase on rental units

/lb

will require a five percent deposit as opposed to the one percent for HOP applicants and aside from the monthly mortgage payment there are strata fees to maintain the common property in the development, property taxes, utilities and insurance costs to consider. Mayor Peter Milobar remarks, “The City of Kamloops is supportive of the development of quality affordable housing opportunities in Kamloops. We’d like to commend both the Province and Kamloops United Church for investing in this development, ensuring that low- to moderate-income families and individuals have access to affordable home ownership options.” Since 2001, the B.C. government has invested $3.6 billion to provide affordable housing for low-income individuals, seniors and families. This year, more than 98,000 B.C. households will benefit from provincial social housing programs and services. For more information about Vision 429 check out their website www.429stpaul.ca. Will it pour right? Does the lid stay on when you tip it? When you hold the handle does it balance? Teapots have such character and history and the crafting possibilities are infinite. For High Tea, members of the Thompson Valley Potters Guild will showcase sculptures in each their own unique style and taste in an exhibition worthy of the Mad Hatter. With each sculpture High Tea will show the viewer individual interpretations of those words and represent those ideas in functional and non-functional ways.”

“Art is fundamental to how our society interprets the world, and helps others see the beauty around us,” Stone said. “These grants allow our artistic community to grow in new and dynamic ways.” “We are lucky in Kamloops to have such a vibrant and evolving arts culture,” Lake said. “Thanks to this funding, the talented artists of Kamloops will be displaying their skills to more residents of the area.” The funding comes from a record-high $24 million that the B.C. Arts Council has received from the Government of British Columbia to support artists, arts activities and culture in 2014-15. As B.C.’s lead agency for arts funding and development, the B.C. Arts Council enlists the expertise of British Columbia’s artists to evaluate grant applications through a peer review process independent of government. For a list of recipients, or for more information on B.C. Arts Council grants, visit the B.C. Arts Council’s website at bcartscouncil.ca/.

Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Confidence is attracting romantic overtures and your current “me first” attitude is actually working in your favour. Keep pushing the career as money is still flowing your way. If you keep the lines of communication open then your fortune can continue past this current cycle. A playful encounter at the gym signals your arrival. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Another week and the behind the scenes fight you’ve been having will finally be over. In the meantime don’t let it distract you from all of the love coming your way. Calming your busy mind attracts both peaceful souls and loving glances. Someone special has a crush on you. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Recent encounters are helping to focus your big picture. There’s a new world waiting and you’d like to be a big part of it. Before you jump in however, you’re in a reflective and “letting go” cycle. If the behind the scenes affair is becoming too demanding, walk away. A new you is about to come alive. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) As much as you’d like to get out and play, the office is calling. The team is looking to you for leadership and you have the secrets to help everyone shine. Watch your sweet tooth or temptation will add extra miles to your workout. Love is waiting in a crowded room. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You’re philosophical, expansive and optimistic as a happier vision fills your eyes with how you’d finally like to be. You’re ready for more responsibility and prepared for the extra hours to attain this next goal. Get out and be seen. Love is looking for you at work. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Take some “me time” and let yourself rest and recharge. A visit to the day spa for an afternoon of nails and a massage will go a long way to bringing peace to your inner soul. The bigger picture is coming into focus and you can actually see love working out. By the weekend, you’ll be ready to rejoin the race. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Your heart is finally up for an adventure. Don’t go out alone if can avoid it. Teaming up is the fastest way to find some fun trouble and right now the team is more than willing to wing you. An inspiring stranger leads you out of darkness and into a brave new world. It’s time Scorpio. Go get ‘em. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) It looks like just another workweek with planning, chores and paying the bills. Not Sagittarius fun at all but your love life has kicked into high gear. You will be giving more of your time, energy, and money to your new affection but it’s love. And that’s about giving, receiving, and sharing. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Your health gets a boost from an early morning run along the river. This in turn sets off your frisky button. Others are seeing you as playful and fun but you’re pushing too hard and bumping others the wrong way. Hold back your creative expression and let love flow naturally. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) You’re currently seen as relationship material number one and both luck and love are on your side. This will lead to a financial windfall if you play the energy correctly. Friends will try to help but efforts might just as easily let you down. Keep going. It’s not always about business. You’re personal life needs attention as well. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) The home needs work that can no longer be avoided. A fresh coat of paint or a new move will help create the centering environment that you’ve been missing. Ask for top dollar if selling your house. You’ll be surprisingly aggressive in negotiations. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) A new project has your attention and you’re aggressively bringing it to life. Short trips, traffic, and networking fill the days but the dedication and efforts will be worth it. Money is arriving from the home so expect a surprise refund for the rent and utilities. Check your old clothes for forgotten treasures. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist. For personal readings visit thesunnyside.net.
