Canada Job Fund helps Kamloops students Students across British Columbia are receiving the training they need for jobs in their communities, thanks to the federal and provincial partnership under the Canada Job Fund. This includes more than $809,000 in Project-Based Training (PBT) programs offered in multiple BC regions including the Thompson-Okanagan: Thompson Rivers University: $75,329 for Aboriginal Women in Trades program in Kamloops; Sprott Shaw College: $104,240 for Skills for Work program in Kamloops; Sprott Shaw College: $160,823 for Skills for Work Program in Kamloops, Kelowna
and Penticton; Interior Logging Association: $309,550 for Forest Harvesting Equipment Operator Training program in Kamloops and Interior Logging Association: $75,830 for Log Truck Driver Training program in Kamloops. These five programs are now underway with training expected to finish by the end of February. They are part of a total investment of more than $10.4 million in 46 training programs benefiting British Columbians across the province thanks to the Canada-BC Job Fund Agreement under the Employer-Sponsored Training stream. “The demand for skilled labour
will continue to increase as BC’s economy grows,” KamloopsSouth Thompson MLA Todd Stone said, “These training programs will help many Kamloops-area students start a path toward successful careers.” These skills training programs support BC’s regional labour market demands and provide opportunities to youth, women, Indigenous people, immigrants and other eligible participants to receive training as well as industry recognized certificates or credentials. We have always loved the restaurant industry; it’s truly our passion and is who we are. Our goals were to spread our wings and be part of the bigger picture; I was 26 years old when we signed on so I knew we had to deliver. Because of our hard work, we eventually received the opportunity to buy in as partners. We went from general managers to owners but between the two of us, we have 38 years in the restaurant industry.” These two couples have proven that it is possible to live, love and work together. It’s not always this way but when you find that special someone, it shows that anything is possible. Tanya Orozco, freelance

Our roving reporter (and fiddler!), caught up with Kamloops Old Time Fiddlers members (L-R) Stephanie Clow, Clark Hiles, Linda Hiles and Florence Tellier at the fiddle workshop hosted in conjunction with Kamloops Interior Summer School of Music on Saturday, February 6 at Heritage House. Over 60 students of all ages attended! If you’re interested in playing folk music, the Old Time Fiddlers hold practice sessions every Tuesday at 7:00 pm, in the lower level Heritage House, from September to March with the exception of December. All musicians are welcome. Don’t play an instrument? No problem! Some members simply love the music and enjoy the monthly dances. Inset: Shamma Sabir, one of Canada’s top fiddlers, and one of the fiddle workshop instructors playing “Britches Full of Stitches” during the group jam session.

Words that should be added to the dictionary in 2016 Epiphanot (n.): an idea that seems like an amazing insight to the conceiver but is in fact pointless, mundane, stupid or incorrect. Internest (n.): the cocoon of blankets and pillows you gather around yourself while spending long periods of time on the Internet.

Bad news from a fortune teller In a dark and hazy room, peering into a crystal ball, the mystic delivered grave news, “There’s no easy way to tell you this, so I’ll just be blunt. Prepare yourself to be a widow. Your husband will die a violent and horrible death this year.” Visibly shaken, the wife stared at the woman’s lined face, then at the single flickering candle, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself and to stop her mind racing. She simply had to know. She met the fortuneteller’s gaze, steadied her voice and asked, “Will I be acquitted?”

Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Joint finances hook up with a lesson from your past as you uncover something in the details that could bring you both piece of mind and financial stability. Most likely, an inheritance or money that you’ve been waiting on for some time finally comes through. Love is waiting with an old friend. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Reach for the stars in love. There’s a strong chance that your friends are going to introduce you to a real keeper. Smile big to impress but don’t overdo it. Let them get to know the real you. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) It’s a reclusive, recharge the emotional batteries kind of week. Your social network however undergoes a change as that new love interest introduces you their friends. Take the lead with a big smile and show the group what you can do. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) You’ve developed a taste for the exotic as far away lands expand your creative outlook and bring the impossible closer to reality. Imagination mixes with practical ingenuity to bring a romantic goal to life. Extra hours at the office will be required. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Another boring workweek would normally send signals of sleep and depression through your active mind. This week however you finally have the time to tackle projects that you’ve only been dreaming of. Put your heart into it. The work you create now has the potential to change everything. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) New beginnings in love have you thinking about the bigger picture. Travel casts an enticing spell but you’re not sure if you should take the bait. An inheritance arrives to take the heat off of joint finances. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) This week your daily routine get’s a boost from your astro-money sector. Keep your eyes open for surprise money-making opportunities that arrive in the fields of physical health, accounting or helping others in a physical way. Love is still waiting at the gym. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Although you’re trying and trying, you haven’t exactly crossed up through the glass ceiling to the next level. What made you successful at your current level is not going to be good enough at the next. If you really want your dreams then you’re going to have to evolve upwards instead of inwards. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) It’s Valentine’s week but you don’t have to spend all of your money to show that you care. For the right person, it’s the little things that count. Try and be there for your partner in ways only you can. This will diminish the financial stress and demonstrate that you understand who you are, what you have to offer and why you’re loved in the first place. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) This week there’s a real chance to meet someone new and exciting. Get out but don’t be too chatty and curb your natural over the top aggression. Your Scorpio stare is all you’ll need to get your message across. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) A stroke of luck at the office opens doors to a big financial reward. Keep your eyes open and be ready to act. The combination of self-discipline and a new way of thinking will help love guide you at an emotional crossroads. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Something at a distance has your attention and it’s inspiring you to change the way you look. Perhaps an outfit from across the seas, a big city haircut or even a new car could all be on the way. It’s time to look the part you’re stepping into.
