Celebrating Social Work

Local social workers celebrated BC Social Work Week, March 13 to 19, with a lunch Friday, March 18 at the Henry Grube Education Centre. The BC Association of Social Workers (BCASW) chose the theme Social Work: A Profession Dedicated to an Inclusive Society, to reflect the commitment and passion held by social workers addressing growing social, economic and health inequities in Canada. “We celebrate the hundreds of social workers in the Thompson Nicola area who work hard every day in the pursuit of social justice” said BCASW president Michael Crawford. “Social workers not only focus on problems at the individual level; we are actively advocating at all levels of government for social and economic Sylvia Hayner and the team at Sunlife Financial presented a cheque for $275 to Amber Harding of United Way. policies that produce inclusive The funds were raised by Sunlife staff through their soup and a bun promotion that runs every other Tuesday and equitable communities.” This year’s special guest was from October through June. World’s top women’s hockey players lace up! Some of the world’s best women’s hockey players are in Kamloops at the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship as it’s played in BC for the first time. National teams from Canada, the United States, Russia, Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Japan are competing for the world title from March 28 to April 4. “Kamloops has a great hockey tradition and the women’s world championship will add another chapter to our hockey heritage, thanks to the local organizing committee and scores of volun-

teers,” Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone said. “Sport tourism events such as this provide a major economic spinoff and are among the reasons our province is an economic leader in Canada.” The BC government is investing $200,000 in the championship. The Ministry of Jobs, Tourism, Skills Training and Responsible for Labour will provide $50,000 through the new Tourism Events Program and the Ministry of Community Sport and Cultural Development has provided an additional $150,000 for the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey

Women’s World Championship from its Major Sport Events Program. The tournament is expected to provide up to $20 million in economic spinoff for the local economy as 50,000 people attend the event. It also places Kamloops and area in a worldwide spotlight as 60 national and international will be attending. Communities such as Richmond, Penticton, Clearwater and several others have hosted training camps. The Kamloops Minor Hockey Association is also hosting three BC provincial women’s hockey championships.

Kamloops couple in shock after winning Lotto Max Jessica Sandry is glad she reminded her boyfriend, Michael Ellis, to buy a Lotto Max ticket when he passed through Kelowna for work. The reminder paid off to the tune of $500,000 in the March 18 Lotto Max draw. Jessica and Michael only recently started playing the lottery and they can’t believe they have already won big. “I’m shocked we won because this is only the tenth ticket I have ever bought,”

exclaimed Michael. As for how they will spend their winnings, the Kamloops couple is focused on investing in their family’s future. “We don’t plan on buying anything right now,” smiled Jessica. “We’re going to pay off our mortgage and invest some of

the money.” The winning ticket was purchased at the Kelowna Husky Market.

The Laughing Stock Theatre Society rings in spring with a showcase of some very funny short one-act plays in their popular Dinner Theatre arena. In choosing the line-up, they looked to the ‘laugh out loud’ style of British and American comedies written by some very clever playwrights. An Evening of One Acts was also an opportunity for some of The Laughing Stock’s (TLS) seasoned acting members to try their hand at directing their submissions. Carlo Sia, TLS actor, is directing The Accident, a very funny play by British playwright Herb Hassler. Walter Hunt, TLS actor and stage manager, is taking on Peter Tolan’s American classic comedy, Pillow Talk. Lorraine Korobanik, TLS actor, rounds out the new directors by presenting The Rental, a playful comedy written by American playwright Mark Harvey Levine. Finally, Vance Schneider, TLS founder, director and producer, brings us the classic British farce that is Changing Rooms by Jackie Carreira, which is reminiscent of a certain 1970’s British department store classic comedy. The show will run April 21 to 23 at the Kamloops Convention Centre Theatre. There are two available options and ticket prices; the show and Dinner and a Show. The preview runs without dinner on April 21 at 8:00 pm. April 22 and 23 will offer the meal at 6:45 pm with the curtain to follow at 8:00 pm. A cash bar will be available before the show and at intermission. Tickets for all performances can be purchased through Kamloops Live! Box Office. Shepard and Zazula join Blazers The Kamloops Blazers have added 15-year-old forward Jackson Shepard and 15-year-old defenseman Luke Zazula to the active roster. Shepard played this season with the Vancouver NW Giants in the BC Major Midget League. He had 13 goals and 42 points in 37 games this season. In six playoff games, the 5’8” and 165lb native of West Vancouver had three assists. Shepard’s Giants lost in the semi-finals of the BCMML playoffs to the Cariboo Cougars recently. Zazula played this season with the Delta Hockey Academy Midget Prep team. He had 26 points in 29 regular season games. The 5’8” defenseman helped his team win the Canadian Sport School Hockey League Championship recently in Penticton.
With the move, the Blazers roster is now at 26 players including three goaltenders, eight defensemen and 15 forwards.

Great turnout for Finals The best of women’s indoor soccer gathered recently for Kamloops’ biggest indoor tournament. Eighteen teams faced off during the Ladies leagues play-offs and finals. Last year’s Division 2 Champions Turf Chix successfully retained their title from the 2015 season against the Footy Chix. Down 2-1 with 15 seconds left, the Turf Chix scored what must be the goal of the season; the ball was kicked from the half way line and lazered into the top corner, tying the game up to 2-2, going to penalties. Turf Chix came out on top in the penalty shoot-out retaining their Division 2 Crown for another year. League sponsor Hardeep Chahal, representing Chahal Priddle Law firm, said, as he presented the winning trophy, “it was one of the best games [he] had witnessed in the Soccer Quest facility in two years of operations in their new facility”. The Kamloops Dodge Division 3 crown went to United Spirit who came away with a 2-0 victory over Earls. A very tight game and the skill level for supposedly recreation players were great to see. United Keeper Annette Hanna was outstanding, keeping a clean sheet from some very heavy pressure late on from Earls.

WCT presents world premiere of new play Western Canada Theatre (WCT) is presenting the world premiere of Habib’s Unforgettable All Night House Party, written by Kamloops’ own Janet Michael, from March 31 to April 9 at the Sagebrush Theatre. Set in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1947, a Lebanese family prepares to celebrate their parent’s wedding anniversary with a house party full of fun, music and family. Playwright Janet Michael recounts the hilarious and turbulent story inspired by her Lebanese grandparents’ integration into St John’s, raising a family and running a store. “The Second World War had just ended. It was a time of unbridled optimism and it helped spawn a band of young immigrant descendants who were determined to create a place for themselves in the hearts of their fellow Newfoundlanders. They

did it with music and laughter. They were my family.” WCT is celebrating 40 years of theatre by producing the world premiere of a new play by Janet Michael in collaboration with the Resource Centre for the Arts, of St John’s, Newfoundland. In January, the Can-Ital Ladies Society held their general elections and a new Board of Directions was elected; the new officials are Gina Lloyd, president; Maria Cuglietta, vice president: Alba Caputo, secretary; and Fran Rende, treasurer. During 2015, the Society distributed monies raised among various organizations. The recipients of the funds included RIH Foundation (Rapid Access Breast Care Centre), Heart and Stroke Foundation, Alzheimer’s Society, Canadian Diabetes Foundation, MS Society, Parkinson Canada, Kidney Foundation of Canada, two $500 high school scholarships and a university bursary. Most of these funds are raised during the spring and fall fashion shows, the annual Valentines Dinner and Dance and Canada Day. At the moment, the Can-Ital Ladies are preparing for the Spring Fashion Show. This event will be held on April 20 at the Columbo Hall, 814 Lorne Street. The dinner begins at 7:00 pm with doors opening at 6:00 pm. Tickets are $40 each and are available at the participating merchants; Viva Bridal Boutique, Jardine’sUNDER Domaine,NEW The Look Boutique, - W OWNERSHIP 406 Sportswear, and Genesis Fashion and Beauty Complex.

The beauty of Wells Gray captured on canvas The 19th century painting movement known as Impressionism has come through paintings that break form into stipple marks and pure colour. This French approach to recording nature more accurately in terms of light, led painters to pack up their oils in the newly invented metal tubes and seek their subject’s en plein air, on the spot. This method has been applied to Wells Gray Park in the interior of BC. Twenty years ago the Wells Gray Group took up this challenge to paint the park north of Kamloops. Outfitted with maps, acrylic paints and camping supplies the painters traveled over the semi-wilderness park. Successes were hard won as nature seemed to want to test those who would

attempt to capture the nuances and grandeur of such a place. And then, after several trips, nature gradually gave up her secrets to those attempting to see nature firsthand. The paintings in this exhibition are the result of numerous camping trips and hikes along trails of discovery leading to prospects of such magnificence as to delight the eye. Join the artists, Lloyd Bennett and Terry Thompson, for their Closing Reception of Impressions From the Interior: Wells Grey Painted on Friday, April 15 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Kamloops Arts Council’s Main Gallery at the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre on 7 Seymour Street West. Admission is by donation.

Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) The future is calling with a delicious overture promising rewards you never dreamed of. Could this be the beginning you’ve been hoping for? Personal freedoms triumph over responsibilities of love. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) When you’re stuck at square one, it’s difficult to imagine taking that special relationship to the next level. Love asks you to be brave and try anyways. Your friends are here to help. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Dramas in love unfold faster than you can keep up. Reset your affections and plan to carry on solo. Push your career and don’t look back. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) The spotlight shifts to your career but don’t sit back holding your breath hoping you’ll be noticed. Put your best foot forward and create the work environment you’ve been longing for. Love attracts someone more spiritual than you imagined. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Lovers cause fits that try to shut down your creative expressions. You’ll second guess a romantic decision. Financial rewards indicate you chose correctly after all. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Home calls with a mess that has to be cleaned up. It’s not something you’ll be able to resolve in one swoop but you should begin chipping away at the problem while you can. Love shines brightly. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) You’ve become a model of efficiency putting your daily affairs and health back in order, it’s now time to focus on love and partnerships. As a natural communicator, you’ll ask background questions and drop verbal hints. Loving hearts bridge impossible gaps. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Time to feel the pinch. You’ve been good at watching your pocketbook but some events are out of your control. Love rings the phone off of the hook but you have a future to plan. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You have energy to burn and your emotional batteries should be fully charged and ready to get back out there. The spotlight has shifted to your role with children and your naturally playful nature. When eyes lock, tell a joke and see where it leads. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Fortune and luck both favour pursuits at a distance. Working vacations are the key. Your advice carries more weight than you realize. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Money continues to be strong but the spotlight has shifted to running around, local business and education. Don’t let your skills get stuck in traffic. Your intelligence is attracting. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) One smile in the mirror is all it takes to fill yourself with a loving attitude. Forget the world and carry on at your own pace. Financial rewards are on the way. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist. For personal readings visit thesunnyside.net.

Did you know? The roar that we hear when we place a seashell next to our ear is not the ocean, but rather the sound of blood surging through the veins in the ear.
