Downtown moves to TeenFest for the day

Our teenagers or Generation Z as they have come to be known are the last of the alphabet. They are post-millenials and the only true generation that has grown up in the age of information and technology. These kids have the world at their fingertips, never knowing what it is like to live without iPods, tablets and an endless stream of information. They can share their feelings and attitudes at the push of a button but how do we as a society reach them? Well if you are like a number of our downtown businesses and organizations like All Aboard Games, the TNRD Library, Kamloops Art Gallery, Kamloops YMCA, Ocean Pacific and Interior Academy School Spa and Salon, you reach out and go to where they gather. These fine downtown establishments will be packing up for the day and heading up the hill to TeenFest at the Tournament Capital Centre on Saturday, March 12. There is one thing that never changes through the generations and that is that kids like Braeden Swain of All Aboard Games with just two of the many board to gather, goof around and learn games that you may have the opportunity to play at TeenFest. together in a group. Downtown businessman Derek Johnson will be there with his wildly popular All Aboard Games. They are planning on having interactive board games set up for the teens to play, will have a display of things they offer in store and will be sharing their calendar of events, which include frequent socially interactive game nights and times in store. All Aboard Games is one of the businesses in downtown Kamloops that appeals to a wide range and age group of people. Their store centers on our need for social experiences and provides an enriched and comfortable environment for people to play board, card and specialty games from around the world. Growing in popularity, the business made a big move last year, purchasing a larger and bigger building to increase the play space. “Board games help the younger generation learn to use their minds and social skills in ways - continued on page 2

BUSINESS PROFILE

Eagle Eye Gifts has its eye on Kamloops With so much influence of First Nations culture here around us, it always seemed odd that there was no retail outlet here in Kamloops that fully featured and embraced the arts and culture of our region. Feeling this and acting upon it, TRU graduate and entrepreneur Julie John opened up her Eagle Eye Gifts right down here on the 400 block of Victoria Street last September and has been thrilled with the response and community engagement in the store. “I owned a café seven years ago out in Squilax,” explains Julie. “I always wanted to specialize in gifts and products and its been on my mind ever since. Before we opened, if people were looking for different art pieces or silver rings there was nowhere to purchase them. People had to travel to Kelowna or Vancouver. We are happy that we can now serve the regional populations and tourists that travel through.” Eagle Eye Gifts has a wide array of First Nations art, giftware and products. You can find everything from beautiful baby moccasins made by Bonaparte elders Daniel and Arlene Gaspard to beading supplies, sweet grass and sage to cards and notebooks, household items, tea and the Proud to Be line of clothing. There really is something for everyone whether you are looking for gifts to take abroad or just items for yourself to wear or use in your household. “There are so many things I like to tell people about this place,” explains Helen John, one of the friendly faces you will meet there on a daily basis. “We are First Nations owned and help bring First Nations recognition downtown. So many people tell us how much at peace they feel when they walk through the doors, there is a good energy in here. They also tell us that it is about time a store like this opened in Kamloops, we needed it.”

A play for the superhero in all of us - Chimera Theatre’s upcoming production SuperZeroes! is running at the Pavilion Theatre, 1025 Lorne Street, from March 9 to 12 with evening shows starting at 7:30 pm. Chimera Theatre is also having a pay-what-you-can matinee at 2:00 pm on March 12. This play is suitable for ages eight and up. In an alternate earth where superhuman abilities have become increasingly common, a team of young notso-super heroes gets caught up in mystery that could shatter the world they live in. Someone has broken into the Superhero Registry Database of the Department of Superhuman Affairs and now superheroes everywhere live in fear of their weaknesses and secret identities being revealed. It’s up to the young heroes with mediocre superpowers to set things back to how they were or choose to alter the course of superhuman history forever. Riotously fun and entertaining, this new comedy is filled with mistaken identities, physical comedy, hijinks and superhero fight scenes. Pictured here are Shelyse Cameron and Wyatt Purcha rehearsing for SuperZeros! For more information, visit www.chimeratheatre.com.

Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Distant shores are calling for a quick getaway but it looks like you’re stuck in the city. The past continues to bring you luck and bridges you thought were forever burnt surprisingly come back to life. Take a chance on love. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Although your heart is longing for adventure and your friends keep calling, you’re actually in a reflective and introspective cycle. A spotlight is shining on your past as a means to look forward. Break reoccurring cycles and try something new. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Battles in your personal relationships have been taking up much of your emotional energy. Call a truce and channel your efforts into your career. An office romance is waiting to bloom. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Love is calling from a distance but you’re too busy to take action. This is causing more frustration than expected and there’s no relief in sight. Currently, it’s all work and no play. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) The spotlight is on your personal freedoms and long-term goals. Although you don’t want to be tied down right now, love is attracting in the form of joint projects. Team up and love will follow. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Problems at home are about to clear up, but not yet. Instead of worrying about the cost of that renovation or relocation, focus on your partner. Love for Leo is currently favouring teamwork. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Think big. You’re still super lucky and this week love is on your side as well. Home might be causing fits but it’s still where the heart is. Spring cleaning begins early this year. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) A little flirting goes a long way to lifting your mood and opening a new chapter in your life. Like Aries, your past will shine a light on the direction you’re supposed to take moving forward. Try something new and the path will become clear. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) If money is on the mind then clean the books and put yourself at ease. Spring fever is in the air and it’s up to you to turn that wink into a romantic adventure. Friends are on your side so if you need help, ask. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) If you’re in sales or launching a new project then this is a great time to spread the word and close some deals. Don’t leave anything to chance. Everyone is currently charmed by your words. So tell your clients to sign and they will. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) It’s a workweek and money is coming in almost too fast to count but sometimes you just have to take a break. Try and get away for a couple of hours or take an extended power nap. You’re a tough sign but even Capricorn’s batteries need to recharge sometimes. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) When was the last time you thought of just yourself? A new you is beginning to emerge and it’s now up to you to shape yourself into the image that you want to portray to the world. A new haircut, wardrobe or even home, are all reflections of the life you’re stepping into. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist.
