Everyday heroes committed to our community Were you one of those kids who waved to truck drivers to honk their horns? Did you stand in awe of the crushing mechanism of the garbage truck that screeched and banged its way down your street every week? Maybe it’s because they are loud. Maybe it’s the way they are so powerful. Whatever the reason, the biggest trucks in our city seem to exercise an almost hypnotic hold on children, eliciting a fascination that sometimes continues long into adulthood. For the kid obsessed with big trucks, this is one event you don’t want to miss. National Public Works Week (NPWW) takes place May 19 to 25. NPWW is observed each year during the third full week of May to celebrate the tens of thousands of men and women in North America who provide and maintain the infrastructure and services collectively known as public works. The Canadian Public Works Association raises awareness of public works issues and increases confidence in public works employees. On Saturday, May 25, the City of Kamloops is holding an open house at the Public Works Centre at 955 Concordia Way. This event will highlight the key role of public works in community life and is free for everyone to participate and celebrate. The open house will run from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm with a variety of activities and demonstrations to participate in. Kids and adults can get up close and personal with big vehicles at various large equipment displays. Pose with your favourite piece of equipment or take pretend play to a whole new level and go for a “high” ride in a bucket truck. This is an opportunity for kids to really appreciate the size and power of these working machines and Public Works’ employees will be available to answer

questions and foster an appreciation for what goes into maintaining a town. Enjoy free refreshments sponsored by Cupe Local 900 and a variety of interactive educational exhibits and facility tours planned for young and young at heart. Kids will learn about fire safety in a fun way with Kamloops Fire Rescue’s inflatable fire safety house. Recognize employees who actively serve the community at the RCMP exhibit. Chat up the ECOSmart Team who will be on site with balloons and WaterSmart giveaways. Let the kids run wild and check out the Wildlife Park’s animal display. Young bird enthusiast will receive a bird-

house to paint and through a Community Garden initiative, growing green-thumbs can plant vegetable seeds in pots to take home. Tour the City greenhouse, get information on healthy landscapes or take in a planting demonstration and enter to win a draw for a hanging basket. Learn about the City’s nationally recognized Kamloops Centre for Water Quality. For those who pre-register, facility tours are scheduled for Tuesday, May 21 and Thursday, May 23 at 9:00am and 10:00am. Seniors in Kamloops will soon have new opportunities to volunteer, mentor younger generations and help raise awareness of elder abuse thanks to funding through the New Horizons for Seniors Program. Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo made the announcement and highlighted contributions to the North Shore Community Centre Society (NSCCS), the Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society and the Centre for Seniors Information at NSCCS last week.

Local author captures Honourable Mention

The Green Book Festival is a North American-wide competition for books with an environmental theme or subject matter. Katie Welch’s The Bears, received the Honourable Mention in the General Fiction category of the San Francisco-based festival. The local author was unable to attend the awards banquet May 18 in San Francisco but is delighted that her book was recognized. Less than five percent of

Festival entrants are honoured in the Festival, which has Non-Fiction, Children’s and Spiritual categories as well. The Bears is a mythological adventure based upon a hypothetical oil spill in Northern British Columbia. Three of the characters are bears, and the reader can “hear” their thoughts. Mira Singh has earned a spot in the top 20 to return to California for a third time to “prove her fitness” in her age group (50 to 54) at the Reebok CrossFit World Games in Los Angeles this July. This year the CrossFit Open competition was held from March 6 to April 7 and Maria held her spot by placing 17th. She is looking for support to get to the Games and is kickstarting the fundraising effort with competitions, a silent auction as well as 50/50 draws. Granny flower power is a go The Kamloops CanGo Grannies are holding their Flower Power Plant Sale on Saturday, May 25 from 8:00am to noon, at Gaglardi Square, corner of Seymour Street and Second Avenue. This project was started by Kamloops school children and is supported by the Kamloops CanGo Grannies; all proceeds go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation which supports African grandmothers and their AIDS-orphaned grandchildren.

The Tournament Capital Centre is a busy place. From gym-goers, to special events, to swimming families and seniors, the facility attracts people of all ages and from all over. As a result, the TCC parking lots tend to get congested, raising concerns around the safety of pedestrians and drivers. Community Safety volunteers who work the Speed Watch Program will be operating at the TCC on May 29, to actively remind drivers to watch their speeds and pay attention to pedestrian traffic of all ages while at the facility. “We hope this campaign serves as a reminder that the TCC attracts people of all ages” says Glen Cheetham, supervisor with the City of Kamloops, “and that drivers need to slow down and be alert so that all pedestrians, including parents with young children and seniors, enjoy a safe visit.” A great golfing experience... at an affordable price!

Jubilee Urban Movement Partners (JUMP) is a volunteer charity that provides free healthy complete meals as well as other food supplies to those most in need. We do this when no one else

does or can during the week and weekend. We fill in the gaps. We can only keep on going to meet the growing needs – 200 meals per week and counting. Veronica Lavoie was asked to paint “what does disability mean to you.” Veronica has been a member of People In Motion for a long time and enjoys painting, writing poetry and fitness.

Ability from disability About 4.4 million Canadians report having a disability. They are our largest minority. Disability isn’t strictly a health problem; it’s about being denied opportunities. Thanks to much more enlightened attitudes and removing barriers, the vast potential of those with disabilities is being unlocked and they are able to navigate a path to a full, enriching life. Disability and health can and do coexist at People In Motion (PIM). They are a Kamloops based non-profit that was created in 1989 to serve the disability community by providing fitness, educational, recreational and social programs. Their members aren’t disabled people. They are people with disabilities. They have a membership base of 280 and roughly 180 members who regularly participate in their programs. Last year PIM put on 180 different events and programs where they offered fitness, educational, recreational and social programs and services for youth and adults. Officially, the non-profit’s motto is “creating a better tomorrow for people with disabilities” yet with such a track record of success and resources to empower people with disabilities, it is easy to see why Executive Director, Heather Brandon has aptly adopted the moniker “the little non-profit that does so much” for the organization. People In Motion recently rolled out their newest initiative called “Showcase Your Talent”.

For the program launch, an artist was recruited to work with their members and the result was a collection of original paintings that served to illustrate what having a disability meant to them. Twelve members completed creative works and the pieces were further given a voice through very moving statements written on them. Heather noted some of the sentiments including “Having a disability means helping people, fun and learning”; “Having a disability means constantly learning to do things differently”; “People are different”; and her personal favourite, “Disability is awesome”. “It’s great to see our members having such a positive outlook and showing that in their paintings,” acknowledges Heather. With the support of Kamloops Art Gallery (KAG) PIM is showcasing their members’ talent and inspiration. KAG will hang the members’ art in the Studio where gallery visitors can see the display during Disability Awareness Week from May 26 to June 1. The pieces will continue to be displayed until the end of June. All humans face challenges, it’s just that people with disabilities face different challenges. People in Motion help makes coping with the everyday challenges of life easier through activity, motivation and support that breaks through barriers of perceived physical limitations.
