Festival of fear and fake flesh is bloody good Darryl John, producer of the Fake Flesh Film Fest, shows a bit from Night of the Ooze, one of the local films that will be playing at the festival.

Wear your big-kid pants and get ready to scream like a little girl. If you enjoy an unhealthy dose of torture, pain and insanity then this is the Halloween event for you! A special night of terror is being programmed and run by a dedicated hardcore, Darryl John, who has only one mission… to scare the living daylights out of you! Enthusiastic filmmakers and fans of gore will be screaming with delight in anticipation of a deadly feast of approximately 20 short horror films, seven of them locally filmed, scheduled to be unleashed on October 28. Showtimes are 7:00pm and 9:30pm. A dark cloud will creep over Kamloops as Darryl’s Fake Flesh Film Festival showcases new breeds of inde-

pendent films swimming in fake blood and guts. The Paramount Theatre will become the gathering place for local devotees of genre fare. As a filmmaker, Darryl has always had a taste for the darker theatrical experiences. He submitted a film to a festival in Whistler three years ago and hasn’t looked back, except to look over his should to see what’s sneaking up behind him. “There will be a lot of blood and appendages being ripped off. Local filmmakers are stoked to be doing this,” Darryl reveals. Darryl too, will present his newest full-sensory onslaught. In Night of the Rolling Dead, look for lovely but lethal local derby girls to invade the silver screen as zombies. The flick features both the Tournament City Derby Dolls and the Penticton Pistoleras. Among the diverse lineup is, Night of the Ooze by Corey Rajala, a 14-minute feature production filmed on location in Kamloops. One of the shorts being screened was produced in Spain and has been shown at over 60 other dark film festivals. Representing la belle province of Quebec are two additional adrenaline-dripping shorts with English sub-titles.

The audience can expect to witness special effects from both ends of the dark spectrum as the submissions incorporate everything from homemade gore to computer animation. The twisted poster child for the Fake Film Fest is a charming vampire created by local artist Phil Ryan. Prints will be on sale at the event so everyone can take a little piece of doom home with them. Spoil yourself with this treat to die for. What a fun conversation piece! Comedian Dan Jakes will host this frightfully freakish evening and movie-goers are encouraged to dress up in their insanely creepy best for a shot at a $150 prize. Devotees can swallow the fear that wells up inside and continue to mingle at an after party at Carlos O’Bryans. At the end of it all, your stomach will be twisted into a bunch of unrecognizable nerves. With a scream around every corner, it will be tough to find a better Halloween event for grown-ups anywhere! Prepare for winter driving With cold roads and winter driving condition approaching, the RCMP are reminding motorists that they must reduce their speed and adjust their driving habits to accommodate the prevailing road and weather conditions. In addition to reducing speed, extra distance must be left between vehicles to allow for the longer stopping distance required on wet or slippery surfaces. RCMP patrol officers investigating a ten car collision that took place on the Overlander Bridge last Saturday reported that slippery road conditions combined with drivers who were following to close in traffic and not reducing their speed relative to the prevailing conditions triggered the collision. There was a mixture of rain and snow falling at the time contributing to the slippery roads. The minor nature of the injures was reflected in the finding that all four people were wearing seat belts at the time and were subsequently treated and released.

Ranch lingers with ghosts of the past If you are looking for something out of the ordinary this Halloween, you may want to head out to the O’Keefe Ranch on Saturday, October 27 for the second annual Paranormal Halloween to do some ghost hunting with The Canadian Paranormal Society (TCPS). TCPS was founded by Glen Ferguson, an ex-Special Forces and Desert Storm Veteran. He was exposed to the paranormal at an early age by his mother, who was a medium. He now scours the country looking for paranormal activity with the use of such equipment as infrared video cameras, electromagnetic field detectors, laser temperature gauges, thermal imaging units and full spectrum cameras. Glen teamed up with the O’Keefe Ranch last year for a special Halloween investigation. Members of his team were set up in various buildings throughout the ranch to teach visitors about the different equipment they use on investigations and participants were invited to use the equipment and see if they could discover any paranormal activity which accord-

ing to people that work at the ranch there have been a number of unexplained occurrences over the years. The Historic O’Keefe Ranch is exactly as old as Canada and rich with history – exactly the type of place for lingering ghosts of the past. It was founded in 1867 by Cornelius O’Keefe, who was born near Ottawa in 1838 of Irish immigrant parents. The eldest son of his six children, Faber, died of spinal meningitis at the tender age of six and a half. He is believed to haunt the mansion particularly around the doll room where he died. Guest conductor for Kamloops Symphony A first for the Kamloops Symphony in more than two decades, Music Director and Conductor Bruce Dunn is passing the bat on to guest conductor Martin MacDonald to lead the orchestra for Affairs of the Heart on Saturday, October 27 at 7:30pm in Sagebrush Theatre. Since November of 1990, Bruce has conducted every performance of the Kamloops Symphony, leading the organization to its current status as one of the most successful small professional orchestras in the country. Bruce will, of

course, continue to conduct most of the Kamloops Symphony’s performances while taking a little more time to pursue other interests this year. Martin recently concluded his three-year term as Resident Conductor of Symphony Nova Scotia, where he conducted over 100 performances of classi-

Opportunities for local artists to showcase their talent Games People Play TRU World is putting out a call for submissions for an exhibition in the TRU Gallery that will be part of the International Week from February 4 to the 8, 2013. The theme for the exhibition will be Games People Play. Artists are encouraged to submit paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures or videos concerning the games people play. Work will be exhibited along side traditional games people play from around the world. The submission deadline is December 14. New Hawaiian Massage and Life Coaching Services in Kamloops There is a new opportunity in Kamloops to create better health and wellness in your life. Born in Hawaii, Kathy is completing her certification for Mana Lomi Massage. Mana Lomi is a form of Lomilomi massage and Kathy is finding that her clients enjoy the ancient Hawaiian healing art with its rhythmic dance-like movements and bone deep, yet gentle and relaxing body massage. “It’s another way I can help to create more balance, relaxation and wellness for my clients, as well as share a little of a culture that is important to me,” says Kathy. She has also worked for various government organizations and managed a non-profit organization assisting individuals with disabilities. This anniversary performance presents a program of contrasts and collaborations: good versus evil. Swan Lake’s White Swan and Black Swan pas de deux is a battle of ballerina egos originally conceived from Russian folk tales about Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an

evil sorcerer’s curse. Ballet Kelowna’s artistic director David LaHay has assembled an amazing collection of dances for the fall performance that celebrate the traditional, take a slice from history but always recognizing the modern twist that young dancers bring to the performance.
