Creepy opportunities for fright fanatics Humans are suckers for a good scare. Some can’t get enough. This morbid desire is so widespread that we’ve collectively devoted a day – and often extend it to a month – of the year to celebrate all things creepy. In recognition of Halloween, the Kamloops Museum and Archives offers several age-appropriate ways to frighten oneself. On October 5 and 19, children can attend a new workshop called Cemeteries for Kids. In this twist on investigating local history, kids can explore, discover and learn about local people of the past through our local cemeteries. “There’s a lot you can learn from a cemetery,” says Melissa Baker, museum educator. “For example, we see a child’s grave and want to know why they died so young, and it becomes a way to learn about influenza or other illnesses that were dangerous. For some kids it helps to take away the fear factor around cemeteries. It’s just another glimpse into our past.” The workshop will go from 3:00 to 4:00pm on each date on site at a local cemetery. The location details are given upon registration. Also on October 5, from noon to 1:30pm, is a Kamloops Criminals Guided Walking Tour. Hear about Kamloops’ most famous crimi-

nal, who tried to escape from a Kamloops gaol and more, “like the Mclean brothers and how they killed Johnny Usher,” shares Melissa. “These are stories we still talk about years later.” Later in the month the Museum’s haunted tours are back. These popular tours explore scary burial grounds, historical spooky spots and various locations where the echoes of hangings, murders and forgotten souls can still be heard creeping

around. Guides of these tours have developed a reputation for weaving delicious tales by sharing the gossip, hearsay, stories and rumours that don’t always make it into the history books, and consequently they fill up very quickly and must be registered for early. “Last year we had a lot of people wishing their kids had come on the tour, but some parts of it just aren’t suitable for kids, so we have added a new haunted family tour

this year,” says Melissa, adding that it is already almost full. These special family-friendly tours are scheduled for October 23 from 5:30 to 7:30pm and 6:15 to 8:15pm, but the remaining tours are not suitable for younger audiences. The no-holds-barred excursions will be offered on October 24 and 25 from 5:30 to 7:30pm and 6:15 to 8:15 each night. Driving will be required, as the group will be moving from one creepy location to another throughout the evening. To avoid missing a spot on one of them, register early by calling the museum at 250-828-3576. Please note that this is not a haunted house tour. The museum has even planned something for the tiniest spook-aholics. On October 25 from 10:00am to noon children ages three to five can don their costumes a few days early to attend Halloween Haunts, a morning full of Halloween stories and songs. “We’re really trying to make the museum a community oriented place. That’s why we work to offer programming for everyone, from the young to the young at heart,” says Melissa. The museum events have a cost and must be registered for. To learn more, contact Melissa Baker at 250828-3493. Rebecca Stewart

Kamloops RCMP have recovered some property that they would like to re-unite with the rightful owner. A number of unique, historical artifacts were found and they do not match any police records of lost or stolen items. A telescope, a trophy and some printed materials are among the collection of unique items that police now have and would like to return. Someone would definitely be missing this assortment of items, and may not have reported the theft, or are unaware that they have been taken. Police encourage anyone who is the victim of a theft to provide a detailed list of all missing items to the police,

New Life Mission pleads for donated space Dear Community, As you may know already the New Life Mission has suffered a serious setback with a fire and vandalism to our Thrift City location downtown. It is a vital part of our Social Enterprise and provides much needed income to support our community programs. It is imperative that we be able to expedite the repairs to ensure as little delay as possible. It will take time to repair all the damage and to do that we will need to empty the store completely. We are sending out a request to the community for help. We are asking someone to come forward with warehouse space to hold inventory while we get our store repaired and ready to reopen.

Our plan is to offer a “Fire Sale” Tuesday and Wednesday next week to reduce inventory and then empty all remaining inventory from the store so it can be repaired and repainted. All remaining inventory will need to be moved to a storage location to facilitate these repairs. If you or your organization are able to help please call our Office @ 250-372-9898 ask for our Executive Director Stan Dueck or call Regan Wilson @ 250-3192300 to discuss details. CanGo Grannies continue to raise money and awareness The Kamloops CanGo Grannies are pleased to partner with Kamloops Film Society to show a special film called Life, Above All. It is based on Canadian author Allan Stratton’s book Chandra’s Secret, which tells the dramatic story of a 12-year-old African girl coping with her mother’s AIDS and the fear in her community while fighting to rescue the people she loves. The film will screen on Saturday October 19 at 7:00pm in the Clocktower Theatre at Thompson Rivers University. Admission is by donation and there will be refreshments and displays at 6:30 pm and a question period following the film. The film Life, Above All won a 2010 Cannes Film Festival prize for

Life Affirmation and Journalism. Roger Ebert said this film “is pure human drama, about deep human emotions, evoked with sympathy and love.” The movie trailer can be seen at kamloopsfilmsociety.ca/lifeabove-all. The Kamloops CanGo Grannies

raise funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, which supports African grandmothers struggling to raise and educate their AIDSorphaned grandchildren. Millions of babies and children are living in the direst poverty, having lost both parents to the AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa. In many cases, the children aren’t able to attend school because the grandmothers cannot afford food or the fees and uniforms. The Stephen Lewis Foundation works with local support groups in African communities to provide food, housing, nursing care, grief counseling and educational opportunities. BUSINESS PROFILE

Houle among Canada’s top 50 companies Earlier this year Houle Electric stopped to celebrate at all seven of its branch offices across British Columbia. They were rejoicing the fact that they’d joined the ranks as one of Canada’s “50 Best Managed Companies.” The electrical contracting company, well known for large high profile and award winning building projects such as the Lions Gate Bridge upgrade and the construction of Abbotsford Regional Hospital, held a festive breakfast that preceded a closed circuit TV broadcast address by Houle president, Robert Lashin from the head office in Burnaby. ”We are always striving to be the best,” commented Lashin to all the staff with him in the room as well as those watching from the other branches. “And here is a shining example of how that effort has paid off!” Houle joined 49 other companies across Canada that were announced as winners of this coveted title in the National Post newspaper. This year was Houle’s first ever application to Canada’s Best Managed Companies, a circumstance that in many cases does not normally result in winning, so the senior management team from Houle was very impressed by the outcome and proud of their company and its many dedicated staff

members. The “Best Managed” program has several unique requirements that applicants must meet in order to qualify. The company must be Canadian-owned and managed and must report a high level of business performance and sustained growth. The company must demonstrate its efforts for growth and performance across the entire organization and that performance must go beyond just financial to show a well-rounded business. Founded in 1944, Houle Electric is BC’s most trusted name in electrical contracting. Houle has a culture of excellence and improvement for its industrial, commercial and institutional customers. Houle is industry renowned for project management, project execution & design skills across all of its divisions: Major Contracts, Special Contracts, Security, Data Networks and Building Controls. Customer-focused service teams for businesses and home owners deliver assessments, reporting and power quality programs and 24-hour emergency services. Houle serves the entire province of BC and beyond with regional offices in Greater Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo, Prince George, Kamloops, Kelowna and Kitimat. Rebecca Stewart

The Kamloops Symphony’s Chamber Series opens next week with a rare and wonderful opportunity to experience four Canadian superstars performing together. On Thursday, October 10, 2013 at 7:30 pm in Calvary Community Church, the New Orford String Quartet is appearing in Kamloops as part of its extensive Western Canadian tour including performances in Edmonton, Calgary, White Rock and Victoria. In the short time since its creation in 2009, the New Orford String Quartet has seen astonishing success, giving annual concerts at the Orford Arts Centre for national CBC broadcast and receiving unanimous critical acclaim, including two Opus Awards for Concert of the Year. Hailed for their “ravishingly beautiful tone” as well as their “extraordinarytechnical skills and musicianship” the members of the New Orford String Quartet are all principal players in the Montreal and Toronto Symphony Orchestras. The New Orford String Quartet’s debut CD of the final quartets of Schubert and Beethoven

on Bridge Records received international acclaim; “one of the top CDs of 2011” (La Presse and CBC In Concert); JUNO Award nomination 2012, “a performance of true greatness and compelling intensity…stunning (Audio Video Club of Atlanta); “flawless…a match made in heaven!” (Classical Music Sentinel); “a performance of rare intensity” (Audiophile Audition); and “nothing short of electrifying….listen and weep,” (The Toronto Star). Kamloops audiences raved about the solo performances of quartet members Andrew Wan and Jonathon Crow, Concertmasters of the Toronto and Montreal symphonies respectively. The quartet’s violist is Eric Nowlin, currently associate principal with the Toronto Symphony and its cellist is Brian Manker, principal of the Montreal Symphony. Single tickets for all performances in the Kamloops Symphony’s 2013-2014 season are on sale now at the Kamloops Live! Box Office or at the door. Bread and Circuses Dr. Edward T Takahashi, B Sc, OD, Optometrist Clinic Director

Dr. Donald Sanford, OD, Optometrist

New patients and referrals welcome!

I was reminded the other day of the custom in ancient Roman times. When Rome conquered much of Europe they wanted to avoid any uprisings by the peasants. To keep them preoccupied they entertained them with circuses (gladiators, etc.) and fed them with bread. These diversionary tactics were quite successful until the peasants began to realize their plight and Rome eventually fell. Today’s businesses use “bread and circuses” to influence the way we purchase goods and services. The contest, the give-away, the “two for one”, the balloons and free coffee – these may be appealing but they can divert your attention from the real reason you are selecting a particular good or service. Someone once said that we should be aware of discounts on “parachutes” or “heart surgery”. The same can be said of eye care. The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten. Your vision is very important to you and you should not discount it. You should expect quality and value for your money not “bread and circuses”. The British Columbia College of Optometry ensures that the same standards of care are provided to all paitents.

Trips, educational pursuits, or projects that could lead to new outlooks should be on your agenda AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) You may feel that someone at work is holding you back.
