Mobile overdose Prevention Up and Running
Interior Health will be offering overdose prevention services in Kamloops using a mobile unit. The mobile unit enhances the current overdose prevention sites and will be situated at both a downtown and north shore location. The north shore location will be in the parking lot behind ASK Wellness Centre next to Spirit Square and will be open Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 3pm. The downtown location will be in the parking lot of the Crossroads Inn at 569 Seymour Street. Downtown hours will be Tuesday to Saturday from 3:30pm to 7:30pm. The mobile overdose prevention unit will offer a place where people who use substances can be safely monitored and treated in the event of an overdose. The unit
will also provide enhanced harm reduction services including the distribution of naloxone, other harm reduction supplies and some primary health care services (wound care/ foot care etc.). In addition, individuals will be provided with direct access to clinical staff who can support with referrals and connections to other substance use services and treatments. A mobile overdose prevention unit differs from a supervised consumption site. Staff will not be supervising substance use in the mobile units until an exemption for a supervised consumption site is approved by Health Canada. The initial locations have been selected as a starting point for this service that is anticipated to evolve over time based on community need, stakeholder input and

evaluation outcomes. Interior Health will work with community stakeholders to respond to concerns raised by businesses and the community. Community members with questions or feedback on the service are encouraged to visit the overdose prevention site page on the Interior Health www.interiorhealth.ca/odps. Overdose prevention sites are one of several strategies Interior Health has employed to respond to the overdose crisis. More information on Interior Health’s broader overdose response can be found on the Interior Health website at www. interiorhealth.ca/AboutUs/Leadership/ MHO/PHEmergency.

As a reextended the spring break to sult, senior staff decided it was
necessary to put the issue to rest and give everyone the certainty of knowing when spring break will occur. “Our community deserves certainty in the school calendar, so that families and our staff can make plans,” said District Superintendent Alison Sidow. “We took the Board’s direction and tried to reach a new agreement. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen.” Board of Trustees Chair Meghan Wade said the board believes it is important that any long -term change to the length of the spring break must occur as part of the col-

In the end, we have to negotiate such a change in the collective agreement. That is how labour relations works. “We want what is best for all parties, but especially for our children. This is their education, their future. It must always be our paramount concern,” Wade said.

Payback Time! On the day Mary received her learner’s permit, her father agreed to take her out for a driving lesson. With a big grin, he hopped in behind the driver’s seat. “Why aren’t you sitting up front on the passenger’s side?” Mary asked. “Mary, I’ve been waiting for this ever since you were a little girl,” Dad replied. “Now it’s my turn to sit back here and kick the seat.”

It Takes a Community to Build a Forest Remember those childhood days when you just couldn’t wait to get outside? Hiking, swimming, fishing, playing in the mud and building forts in the trees was an every day occurrence. With nature as your classroom, you were learning teamwork, sharing, exploring, questioning and how big the world can be when you add your imagination to it. Learning through nature is at the core of the Kamloops Child Development Centre – and their amazingly big yard is a key component: a natural classroom for their children to play and learn. This classroom needs to continue to grow and it’s the focus of their major fundraising project now. Plans include replacing the decade-old equipment and, in its place, building a natural wonderland that researchers can confirm brings so many benefits to the ever-growing number of children who come to the centre, not just for care but, as their name says so dryly, to develop. Studies have shown children who play and learn outside see improved cognitive function, increased creativity, improved interaction with adults, a reduction in attentiondeficit hyperactivity disorder
and reduced rates of aggression. Kamloops Child Development Centre has launched an exciting online campaign to help raise funds to boost this fundraising effort. For as little as $5, you can help to create a natural wonderland that will be accessible and that, except during extreme weather, will see children and teachers outside discovering learning can be fun. For those who can spare more, in keeping with their focus on nature, a $20 donation will net you a package of seeds to add to your own natural environment. For donations of $100 or more, they’ll add an original art card created by one of the children along with the package of seeds. To make your donation, you can simply send them an e-transfer to cdcstaff@telus.net (use forest as the password) or log on to youcaring.com/kcdc and press the “donate button”. If you’d like to visit the centre and drop off your donation in person, stop by Kamloops Child Development at 157 Holway Street, Kamloops, BC. All donations will be recognized on the youcaring. com page and the centre will be issuing tax donation receipts for all donations over $20.

did you find a double-yolker?
For over 25 years the North Shore Business Improvement Association (NSBIA) has been a positive leader and voice of business in Kamloops.
You can even get three or more yolks in one egg -the record is a nine-yolker. Double-yolked eggs are often laid by young hens, whose hormones are not yet fully ‘in tune.’ A double-yolked egg results when two ova are released at the same time.

A woman was flying from Seattle to San Francisco. Unexpectedly, the airplane was diverted to Sacramento along the way. The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft the plane would re-board in 50 minutes. Everybody got off the plane except one lady who was blind. The man had noticed her as he walked by and could tell the lady was blind because her Seeing Eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of her throughout the entire flight. He could also tell she had flown this very flight before because the pilot approached her, and calling her by name, said, “Kathy, we are in Sacramento for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?” The blind lady replied, “No thanks, but maybe my dog would like to stretch his legs.” Picture this: All the people in the gate area came to a complete standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a Seeing Eye dog! The pilot was even wearing sunglasses. People scattered. They not only tried to change planes, but they were trying to change airlines! Remember...Things aren’t always as they appear.
