Chrome and rubber downtown as Hot nite returns Fresh off the Downtown Kamloops Merchants Market, the summer’s next big marquee event is quickly getting ready to invade the city’s core. That’s right, the annual Hot Nite in the City Show and Shine is almost upon us, and it’s time to start getting excited for an invasion of 12 city blocks of vintage, custom, collector, competition, and working vehicles. Thousands make their downtown annually to check out the expansive collection of chrome and rubber, with an estimated 40,000 car enthusiasts taking part in this free, family-friendly event. Last year’s Hot Nite event saw a record 542 registered vehicles, up from 454 the year before, and even more are expected to make their way to Kamloops on Aug. 12 this year. Some 12 blocks of downtown Kamloops will be closed down for the event, to be lined with street rods, customs, American muscle, sport-compact, British, European, collector, vintage, bikes, race competition, highway tractor, and competition vehicles. With such a wide array of vehicles on display, there is sure to be something to excite everybody, from young families looking to take a nice stroll through downtown to the hardcore gear heads who ea-

As wildfires burned across British Columbia and the provincial government called for a state of an emergency, over 40,000 helpless people were forced to leave their homes and flee to neighbouring cities for safety. Over the past couple weeks, the City of Kamloops has come together as a community and has been able to help more then 17,000 evacuees. The overwhelming support from all the volunteers and businesses in Kamloops has allowed the evacuees to feel the love and support they need during these hard times. Here in Downtown Kamloops, the Sandman Centre has become the largest Emergency Social Services Reception Centre in the city. It has over 500 cots ready for evacuees seeking shelter. Kamloops author wins 2017 Schemenauer Writing Award The Interior Authors Group (IAG) announced Rita Joan Dozlaw of Kamloops as one of the winners of this year’s Dr. Robert and Elma Schemenauer Writing Awards on July 22. Dozlaw won in the “writing with a nature theme” category for her “Rambunctious Tranquility,” which tells the story of watching a flock migrating trumpeter swans on the South Thompson
River. Dozlaw included insights into the swans’ instincts, personalities, and physical attributes in the story, while describing their awe-inspiring and sometimes humorous show. The award consisted of a cash prize to the winner and a certificate, while a donation to the IAG to support its growth and educational activities was also included.
Invasive Plant Alert: Knotweed in Kamloops
Knotweed is a tall, bamboo-like plant that is one of the worst invasive species and is on the top ten list for eradication in BC. There are currently four knotweed species in BC and one is in Kamloops - Japanese Knotweed. Not only is it invasive, it erodes soil, affects fish habitats, and damages property (e.g. can push through concrete). If you suspect you have knotweed on your property, report it immediately: www.reportaweedbc.ca or call 250-828-3888.
