Dear Friend, Just a few weeks ago we celebrated Easter, a time of thanksgiving for Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross and rejoicing in His victory over sin and death. Through His death and resurrection Jesus opened the way for us to enter God’s presence and to live with Him in victory and grace. What a wonderful life God offers us through faith in Jesus!

Yet there are times when life seems far from wonderful. Take for example the recent attacks on Christians in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday and the ongoing persecution of Christians in Nigeria, Eritrea, China and elsewhere. Or perhaps, closer to home, you yourself or someone you love is struggling with financial problems, illness, etc. To help you or those you love, hold on to their faith in tough times we are featuring in this edition of our magazine some Bible teaching by Derek Prince (see pages 6-8) that you might find helpful. Through this teaching entitled When your faith gets tested Derek reminds us that Jesus had to go through death in order to bring forth new life, and sometimes God can only bring forth new things in our lives, when we endure difficulties first. Is that easy? On the contrary. But God is faithful! And what a blessing it is to have a Bible teacher like Derek that can help you unlock the timeless principles of God’s Word and friends who can pray for you and support you. BECOMING AN INTERCESSOR FOR THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD In 1994 Derek Prince Ministries hosted a conference for Christian leaders in Almaty, Kazakhstan. This short article, adapted from one of Derek’s talks prior to that conference, sums up clearly and compellingly his vision for teaching and resourcing leaders and serves as a wonderful reminder of God’s calling to us to intercede for our ministry today.
very time someone mentioned the name Almaty to Derek Prince, something leapt in his spirit, and he had a feeling that he was due to go there one day in the service of the Lord. Subsequently, in 1994, Derek Prince did go to Almaty to speak at a conference hosted by DPM. There were Christian leaders from eleven nations: Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Northwest China and Mongolia.
analogy of throwing a big stone into the middle of a pond. Those who attended the event would benefit from the teaching shared, (the big splash) and then they would take what they had learnt, (like the ripples in the pond) to their local churches.
No impactful ministry can happen without powerful intercession
These nations had been dominated by the powers of darkness throughout history. Derek understood this, that is why he spoke about the three powers of darkness in this region: demonic paganism, Islam and atheistic Communism.
Then Derek shared a second example taken from the military. When an army invades a fortified area or a country, there are three main phases in the invasion. First, there is bombardment from the air, and he compared this to the intercession from a distance.
And he knew that if he was to strike at the very heart of the darkness, he should do it by teaching first about the importance of evangelism followed by equipping leaders who attended to take the Word of God back to their own people.
The purpose of the aerial assault is to sweep the skies clear of enemy aircraft, and he believed that the purpose of the intercession is to sweep the skies clear of the satanic principalities and powers that have been dominating an area for so long.
He also knew that the pastors who came to the Almaty conference, much the same as the Christian leaders who attend our DPM conferences in India, Sri Lanka or Armenia today, have had few opportunities to do in-depth study of God’s Word and little time to build up their maturity in faith.
The next stage in the invasion is the heavy artillery which is closer at hand, and he likened that to intercession by those who come to intercede on the spot. The third phase is the infantry assault, and he likened that to the actual ministry of God’s Word.
That is why he compared the potential impact of the Almaty conference to the

Branislav got involved with our ministry in 2002 when he started translating Derek’s teaching into the Slovak language. In 2005 he registered DPM in Slovakia and in 2013 he officially became the director of outreach in Eastern Europe. Q: How did you come across Derek Prince’s teaching? I first heard of Derek Prince’s teaching soon after my conversion in 1993. My youth pastor encouraged me to study Foundations for Christian Living. However, it took me a while to do this because at that time this book was only available in the Czech language. The first Christian book I read from cover to cover was Derek’s book titled Appointment in Jerusalem. I really enjoyed it.

Q: What are some of your key responsibilities? As a Director of DPM Slovakia outreach office I’m responsible for managing the ongoing projects in the Slovak language: arranging translations and proofreading, printing, developing the website networking with church leaders and prison chaplains to make Derek’s materials available to them. As a Director of the outreach in Eastern Europe my main responsibility is to coordinate the ministry in ten countries - Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Albania and Slovenia. I visit our outreach workers and volunteers regularly to help them to implement DPM’s vision in their countries. Q: What do you like the most about your job? I enjoy encouraging our outreach workers, praying with them and enabling
them to use the gifts that God has given them to be more effective in His service. Another thing I find very enjoyable too is listening to people sharing about how Derek’s materials have helped them to become fruitful vessels for God’s Kingdom purposes. Q: In your opinion, what are some of the challenges Christians are facing in Eastern Europe today and how can we help them? The top challenge is lack of sound Bible teaching, “the whole counsel of God”, not just teaching on selected topics. Another challenge is busyness with life, work or family that often hinders Christians from digging deeper into God’s Word and growing strong in their faith. Other issues include struggling with poverty, divorce and ignorance of God’s calling and purposes for their lives. We are responding to these challenges by making more of Derek’s foundational Bible teaching available in both print and online. Also, our workers are hosting more training events and conferences on practical topics like the marriage covenant, how to be a good husband and father, how to manage finances well and much more. Q: What would you like DPM supporters to pray for? My first prayer request is to invite them to ask the Lord to guide and protect our outreach workers as they strive to equip local Christians across Eastern Europe to respond to their God given calling. My second prayer request is for asking the Lord to open new doors for making Derek’s resources available to every believer.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR FAITH IS BEING By Derek Prince Tragedy, persecution, a broken marriage, a health problem, disillusionment with a leader, or a parent: sooner or later each one of us is confronted with painful situations. Yet - as many stories in the Bible show – often God can and will use difficult times to test and to strengthen our faith. Let me draw your attention to an Old Testament story that is over 3,000 years old, but the lessons are still relevant for us today. God’s people had passed through the waters of the Red Sea on dry land. Then their enemy, the Egyptians, had followed them in, and God had brought the waters back over the Egyptians, had swept them away, and put an end to that entire force of the enemy that was pursuing His people. After this tremendous deliverance – in Exodus 15:22–24 we read: “Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they travelled in the desert without finding water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.) [In Hebrew, Marah is the word for bitter.] So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?” NIV The Israelites had experienced a glorious deliverance; they were triumphant; they felt everything was under God’s control. Then in the wilderness they went three days without finding water. The children and the cattle became thirsty; they were all weary of the hot and dusty journey. In the distance they saw the gleam of water. Some of them must have started to run to get there to quench their thirst.

But, oh, what a bitter disappointment when they stooped down to drink! The waters were so bitter they could not drink. The people were totally unprepared for that situation. They could not conceive that such a thing would happen to them when God was leading them and when God had just granted them such a tremendous deliverance. In a similar way, the fact that we have had a great victory in our lives does not mean we will never be tested again; rather, it means we will be better equipped for the next test. When the people were unprepared, there was one person who was not unprepared, and that was God. So, let me tell you one thing, no matter how many times we may feel unprepared, God is never unprepared.
God’s supernatural power can turn our sorrow into joy Now the people grumbled but one man, Moses, had the sense to pray. We can find what followed in Exodus 15:25–26: “Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood [a tree]. He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the Lord made a decree and a law for them, and there he tested them. He said, “If you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord who heals you.” NIV In Hebrew, the word 'tree' or 'wood' can also be used to refer to a gallows or a cross (see Deuteronomy 21:22–23 and Galatians 3:13–14).

I believe the tree in the Exodus passage refers to one of the main themes in the Bible. It speaks of another tree that was raised, perhaps 2,400 years later, on a hill called Golgotha: the Cross. When you think of the tree that was cast into the water, think of the Cross of Jesus and the fact that on that Cross Jesus took the bitter curse that we might have the sweetness of the blessing. Moses casting the tree into the pool is an example or picture of you and me taking what was accomplished on our behalf on the Cross and using it to make our bitter pool sweet.
We are called to exercise our faith in Jesus It is important to see that the Scripture does not say the tree made the water sweet. There was nothing magical about the tree. The casting in of the tree was the act of faith that released the miracle-working power of God into the water. That is how God’s power is released in our lives.
to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.” NIV It was on that “tree” that full healing was obtained for the whole human race: spiritual healing from sin, physical healing from sickness, deliverance from the curse, the right to inherit the blessing. The healing and the deliverance that come from the tree, which is the Cross of Jesus must be applied in our lives by an act of faith. Just as Moses, by an act of faith, threw that tree into the bitter water, so we, too, must exercise faith when we confront that bitter pool. We must have faith in what Jesus accomplished on the Cross and, metaphorically, take that tree and throw it into our bitter pool.
We are not to grumble; but pray instead The Bible warns us clearly and often that we are going to be tested. So, we don’t need to be unprepared like the Israelites. One particular passage that talks about the tests we are going to experience is in James 1:2–4:

When you are walking with the Lord and you are confronted with all sorts of
trials, do you consider it pure joy? Or do you do what the Israelites did – begin to grumble, “Lord, why did you let that happen? God, I thought you had this situation in control. Now I don’t know what to do.” The question is not whether we will experience testing, but only how we will respond to it. James continues: “...because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” NIV One essential element of our Christian character is perseverance. Until we develop perseverance, there are goals in God that we can never attain. Perseverance is brought out by testing our faith. There is really only one way to learn perseverance and that is by persevering. James says, “Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” That is God’s goal for you: to be mature, having a fully-rounded Christian character. The question is: Do you want to be mature and complete, not lacking anything? If you do want this, you have to CONTINUES OVER

Man’s disappointments are God’s appointments. When everything is going well and life is pretty easy, most of us tend to be somewhat superficial. We are content with the status quo; content to go to church, give our tithes, say our prayers and lead a respectable life. But God has something much deeper for us. He gets us to the bitter pool. Then, in the depths of agony and disappointment, we cry out as Moses did. And, when we do, we get a much deeper and fuller revelation of God, which only comes on the shores of the bitter pool. go through the process; and the process may include your particular bitter pool.
How to turn the bitter pool into sweet water
Times of testing can deepen your faith
Here are some simple, practical steps that you can take:
Grumbling is a way, not to solve your problems, but to magnify them. You will never find the way out of your problems by grumbling. On the shore of the bitter pool Moses prayed and cried out to the Lord. There was no other source of help but the Lord. And when Moses took that course to pray, rather than to grumble – God answered with a new revelation of Himself.
1. Recognise that the bitter pool is in God’s plan for your life. He knows all about it, and He has the remedy.
God’s purpose in bringing Israel to the bitter pool was to help them learn perseverance. He set them in a situation where the revelation He had for them would be appropriate. It was a double revelation. First of all, He revealed to them the tree – the means of healing. Second, and more important still, He revealed Himself to them in a new aspect: the Lord their Healer. A disappointment is one of the things that nearly all of us face. When your hopes are set high – you are moving forward and everything seems to be going right – and then it all falls apart and crumbles, you are left with nothing but disappointed hopes. That is a bitter pool. What I want you to grasp is this: God led you to that bitter pool. He has something good for you at the bitter pool if you respond the right way.

2. Let God deal with any defects in your character that have been exposed by the bitter pool. If you grumbled when you should have prayed, there is something in you that must be dealt with by the Holy Spirit.

Thank God for what Jesus has done on your behalf. Begin to receive by thanking Him for whatever it is you need: forgiveness, healing (whether it is emotional or physical), release from resentment, bitterness, rebellion, confusion. Thanking God, in faith, is like throwing that tree into the water. The purest expression of faith that you and I are capable of is simply thanking God – without seeing any change or waiting for the evidence, but believing what God says about the Cross of Jesus. Thanking Him releases that miracle-working power to change the bitter water to sweet.

Offering spiritual encouragement to Christians in Sri Lanka
Christians in China are facing a new wave of persecution. Recently, the government launched President Xi Jinping’s five-year plan to control religion, one facet of which includes 'rewriting' the Bible so it aligns with Communist doctrine.
A few weeks prior to the tragic bombings on Easter Sunday our India Directors Elsie and Daniel travelled to Sri Lanka to train and encourage hundreds of pastors by making Derek Prince’s teaching freely available to them.
Last December, Christmas celebrations were banned in several schools and cities.
This trip to Sri Lanka was very different from the previous ones. As Elsie put it: "We have begun to see an opening up amongst pastors for Derek’s life-changing Bible teaching like never before. The greatest joy for us is to see the transformations happening in many pastors lives and to see some of those who previously opposed this teaching be moved by it and accept it.”
In recent months, hundreds of churches have been raided and believers have been arrested. Also, thousands of Christian villagers have been told to take down displays of Jesus, crosses, and gospel passages from their homes as part of the government’s effort to “transform believers in religion, into believers in the Party.” We know that Chinese Christians are joining online services from their homes, cars and workplaces. Others are gathering in small groups to pray and study the Bible in restaurants and parks. And, we are committed to resourcing them with free discipleship materials, SD cards loaded with Bible teaching by Derek Prince and by teaching them via our websites and online channels for as long as we can. The church in this country has suffered before and, with God’s help, it will grow even stronger from this persecution. As a Chinese pastor put it: “In this war, in Xinjiang, in Shanghai, in Beijing, in Chengdu, the rulers have chosen an enemy that can never be imprisoned – the soul of man. In the light of the recent terrorist attacks on Christians in Sri Lanka we as a ministry are not just praying for Christians in this land but we are also thinking and planning on how we can provide spiritual encouragement to pastors and congregations in this country in the coming months. While other ministries may provide practical help for the affected families, we will be continuing to provide spiritual nourishment, training, prayer and free discipleship resources to pastors and churches in Sri Lanka so they may overcome fear and become spiritual ‘watchmen’ in the spiritual realm over their nation.
Starting a new outreach to support Christians in Greece This March, Joyce de Jongh, our UK Communications Manager, travelled to Athens to meet Katerina Kafetzaki who is seeking to make Derek’s teaching available to believers and congregations in Greece. Katerina was introduced to Derek’s teaching by a Swedish missionary when she was a young woman. She has a real burden for helping the Greek people, and also thousands of refugees, who are struggling economically and spiritually, to draw strength and encouragement from God’s Word using Derek’s Bible teaching.
