A Feast of Generosity

Welcome to the Food Issue of DQ Living Magazine. We are delighted to explore celebrated cuisines from around the globe, available right here in Riyadh. The holy month of Ramadan is approaching and our team has put together a guide of famous Ramadan tents and buffet offerings. We also collected creative, unique, and thoughtful items in our Gift Guide section that will make gift-giving easier for you this year. It’s time to gather your families and friends and celebrate the feast of generosity that this holy season brings! DQ Living had the honor to interview the Mexican Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Alfredo Miranda, to learn more about the highlights of his beloved country and life as ambassador here in the Diplomatic Quarter. On April 28th, Darraq Luxury Apartments and Villas and DQ Living Magazine teamed up to bring about the First DQ Community Picnic. This was the first time a community event of this scale was organized in a public venue in the DQ. It was a great success and more community events are in the works. Look forward to a full coverage of the eventful EU Month which commenced April 2018 in the next issue of DQ Living. We wish you all a blessed Ramadan!

Feast of

Generosity BY ALYAA MALIK

The encompassing hospitality and warmth of Saudis are palpable, especially at this time of the year where both Iftar and Suhoor serve as means to share blessings and celebrate togetherness through food.

A

s the sunset slowly fades into the horizon during Ramadan, thousands of men and women rush to make it in time for Iftar, the breaking of the day’s fast. Men huddle by the mosque preparing a long stretch of food to share with their brothers in faith. Mothers and children hustle in kitchens hours before, eager to please their visiting friends and relatives with a delicious, full course meal. Strangers in the street even start giving out small boxes containing bread, water and dates to drivers on the road. When the call to Maghrib prayer begins, so does the feast throughout the land. Iftar is traditionally commenced with a plate of dates and cup of gahwa. After a long day of fasting, it bodes well to start small and work your way up. That brief relief can sustain one through the prayer time until the big meal. From there, regular meals can be had until the last meal before sunrise, which is called Suhoor. Between those hours, people could spend their time either praying, reflecting, reading the Qur’an or eating again.

7

These days, restaurants and hotels in the city have catered to this season’s demands. Many of them provide the option to dine out for both Iftar and Suhoor, so that instead of having to toil away in the kitchen, you can just sit, relax and be served with your meal. Families book at their favorite restaurants to enjoy a hassle-free breakfast or dinner. On the other hand, companies and organizations have also used this occasion to extend their generosity to their employees by treating them to lavish, sponsored banquets in hotels. If they’re lucky, they may also get a free TV raffled off right after their dessert! For your own reference and convenience, we’ve listed the different establishments where you can celebrate your own feasts in the city.

It is also the center for international events, such as national days held in various embassies. These events are of cultural as well as culinary nature. Each country shows off its national delights from sushi to raclette. They are known to attract thousands of VIP visitors every year. More restaurants and eateries are planned as the DQ expands its hospitality sector. It is not just the hotels that are expanding; many food outlets are also planning to establish their presence in Riyadh’s most sought after location. Some of them have even made the choice of making their DQ restaurants their flagship stores. There are many advantages for those who chose Darraq Homes as their Riyadh hide-away all year long. Each home is magnificently decorated, appointed and planned in minute detail. Residents benefit from smart technology and are secured by outside cameras.

Two of their homes' most attractive features are their living areas and kitchen. This is because of the attention paid to making spaces as convivial as possible. Both the apartments and homes are fully-furnished and equipped with the best home technology, including smart features and entertainment, such as widescreen TVs. What is on offer is therefore not just a feast to please every palette. The four hundred units of real estate – with more planned – offer the perfect layout and quality to appeal to those who enjoy entertaining, inviting and gathering around elegant feasts or chilled barbecues alike. Mysterious Mexico From sparkling beaches to fascinating locales to fun fiestas teeming with energy and color to spicy gustatory delights; Mexico is truly the jewel of Latin America.

M

exico is one of the seven cradles of civilization. With a unique millenary culture that dates back to 1200 BC, Mexico is home to 34 UNESCO World Heritage sites, 27 of which are cultural. Mexico has the 14th largest economy in the world and is also most populated Spanish-speaking state. Mexico’s cuisine is a true culinary delight, as was the first of its kind to be named by UNESCO as “Intangible Cultural Heritage”. Mexico has a strong highly diversified economy and is the 13th largest exporter worldwide and gains recognition for its manufacturing and high-technology industries.

GO Bilateral Economic and Trade Relations With a formidable relationship that dates back to the early 1980s, Saudi Arabia is a strategic partner for Mexico because of its economic, political and cultural significance. Both countries are part of the G20, and Saudi Arabia is Mexico's second biggest trading partner in the region and its 41st partner globally. Mexico manufactures iron and steel. These, along with electronics and auto parts, are the country’s main exports to Saudi Arabia. Moreover, Mexican companies such as KidZania and TAMSA have established a presence in Saudi Arabia and are contributing to the Kingdom´s economic diversification plans. The Embassy participates in economic and commercial events such as missions, forums, and meetings with businessmen to promote trade, attract investment and increase the presence of Mexico in the region. Mexico is going through a deep transformation process in key sectors such as energy, telecommunications, labor, and education. This process is making it more competitive, accountable and attractive to foreign investors.

Cultural promotion Mexico has one of the greatest cultural richness and biodiversity of the planet. Moreover, indigenous heritage combines with the colonial period and the modern era in such ways that, today, there are more than 65 spoken languages in Mexico. The exceptional cultural diversity of the country goes hand in hand with the privileged biodiversity of its territory that makes Mexico one of the 17 megadiverse countries.

Los Cabos, Baja California Sur

Other features of Mexico´s culture include colorful traditions like Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), the Mariachi music and vibrant artistic expressions –portrayed by world-renowned artists like Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Leonora Carrington; distinguished writers like Octavio Paz, Juan Rulfo, and Carlos Fuentes, and prominent filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, and Alejandro González Iñárritu.

Consular services Part of the regular activities of the Embassy is done at the Consular Section, which provides services and coordinates the relations with the community, not only in Saudi Arabia but in Bahrain, Oman, and Yemen as well. Consular services include, first, protecting and documenting Mexican nationals by issuing passports, birth certificates, voter cards, and legal orientation, amongst others. Second, issuing visas for foreigners that want to visit Mexico, taking into account that people with either nationality or legal residency or valid visa from the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom or the Schengen domain do not require a Mexican visa to visit Mexico.

Palace of Fine Arts, Mexico City

Gastronomic Delights The Embassy of Mexico and the InterContinental Hotel in Riyadh will hold the “Gastronomic Festival 2018” on September 17-22, 2018. Chef Eduardo Pérez will prepare an assorted menu that will challenge the senses and delight the palates of Riyadh. During the festival, people will be able to participate in cooking classes, in which Chef Pérez will share some of his best recipes. The words “chocolate” and “avocado” come from xocolātl and āhuacatl of the Nahuatl language, used in Mexico since the 14th Century by the Aztec Empire. These words have been important parts of the language of gastronomy, an important culinary and linguistic heritage from Mexico to the world. A delicious reflection of the vast culinary, social and historical processes that span throughout the country and represent a fundamental factor in community development.

Where To Go Cancun is one of the favorite summer destinations, an idyllic place with fine white sand and blue-green waters. Recognized by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Oaxaca is rich in history and culture. Watch the jacarandas bloom in March, visit the fluorescent lagoons, archaeological sites, and colonial treasures. Mexico City has it all! Famous for its overlapping plurality, folklore, and modernity, the city has the largest number of museums in the world and offers an incredible diversity in restaurants, nightlife, and entertainment. A unique mixture of desert landscapes, beaches, and mountainous zones located at the south end of the Baja California Peninsula, Los Cabos is a real paradise between two seas. Emerging from a valley and surrounded by mountains, San Cristobal de las Casas is a quaint town with narrow, cobblestone streets and bright color houses.

What To Do Enjoy the gastronomy of Mexico. In Puebla, be sure to try “chiles en nogada”, a stuffed chili with a walnut sauce and pomegranate, and chicken with “mole poblano”, a recipe of more than 20 ingredients including chilies and chocolate. Try the papadzules, a corn tortilla dipped in creamy pumpkin seed sauce to get a taste of Yucatan cuisine. Experience “cabrito” (goat meat), a regional specialty in Monterrey. And while under the shade of a palm tree in the beach, don’t forget to order the “ceviche mixto,” diced fish, shrimp, and octopus in lime juice, tomatoes, and onions. Visit the pyramids of Teotihuacan in a hot air balloon ride. Stop by the pyramids of Chichen Itza, considered one of the "New Seven Wonders of the World". Walk the ruins of jungle-shrouded Yaxchilan, an ancient Maya city in the bank of the Usumacinta River. The site is wellknown for its well-preserved sculptured stone lintels. Feast your eyes on the beautiful costumes of dancers from the seven regions of Oaxaca. Attend the Guelaguetza festival and watch the traditional dances, incuding the Pineapple dance and Feather dance.

About the Ambassador of Mexico

Alfredo Miranda How did you decide to become a diplomat? My passion for diplomacy started in secondary school where I decided I wanted to be an ambassador and since that moment I’ve worked towards that goal. I joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1982. With a career in Foreign Service that spanned 36 years, my most recent appointment before coming to Riyadh was as Ambassador to Ethiopia as well as the Mexican representative to the African Union. This appointment provided a window to the African region where I could be directly in touch with African interests and decision-making, which prepared me for the role of an Ambassador to the Kingdom. How did you feel when you were assigned to Saudi Arabia? My first reaction was curiosity. Despite my extensive and diverse tour, this was my first appointment in the Middle East. I arrived in January 2017, and with this posting, I have accomplished a tour around the world in terms of experiencing vast cultures, different religions, languages, and interests. Saudi Arabia provides the opportunity to experience all these things, and my previous experiences working in Latin America, Washington DC, Europe, China and Africa prepared me for this role. Tell us about your experiences of being an Ambassador in Saudi Arabia? What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of this job? My number one priority is to increase the level of cooperation between Mexico and Saudi Arabia, both G20 countries, through trade and investment. My team and 24

I meet once a week to formulate a strategy on how to strengthen cooperation, knowledge and cultural exchange. One of the biggest challenges we face is breaking the barrier of lack of knowledge about Mexico. I aim to showcase and spread awareness about Mexico’s economic and technological transformation as we shifted our dependence on oil to manufacturing which has attracted substantial foreign investment as well as heightened our level of cooperation with

over 46 countries. The most rewarding aspect of the job is succeeding and achieving our goals in spreading cultural and economic awareness as well as bringing Mexico and Saudi Arabia closer in bilateral relationships. The biggest honor comes in showcasing the success of Mexicans, whether it’s our presence at a cultural event, or being a finalist at a racing event, to the Saudi population, as well as connecting with the “small but powerful” Mexican community to enhance and spread cultural awareness. Walk us through one day in the life of Ambassador Miranda? I am quite predictable and transparent; routine and discipline have served me well throughout the course of my career. I start my workday at 9:00 AM sharp, where I conduct office work; reviewing official documents as well as distributing work to the staff. I take lunch punctually at 1:00 PM even on the busiest of days; I have learned to be highly disciplined, and this has been imperative in achieving my goals. From 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM I continue my workday at the embassy and I split my day to focus on different elements of my work: organizing the embassy, receiving information about international developments, and signing important documents. I attend important functions almost every evening which is quite enjoyable, and it allows me to network and do my job as a representative of Mexico to the world.

What do you like the most about living in Riyadh and the DQ? Riyadh is a peaceful, relaxing, and calm place, where you can really take advantage of your time. Living in the DQ, near my office, provides me with the advantage of being able to maximize my time and energy in tackling the real issues that I need to deal with. As opposed to densely populated and heavily congested cities like Mexico City, I really appreciate living in a calm and relaxing city. The DQ is a unique residential area where I enjoy the many facilities and a vast number of walking trails, and we as well take advantage of the outdoors. What are your favorite places to visit in Saudi Arabia? There are many but I will name a few. The Red Sands is where I visited with my family who spent the December holiday with us. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the desert on quads and ATVs. I have visited Masmak Fort countless times. I enjoy taking visiting delegations there, and I can almost serve as a guide. This cultural site gives you the chance to understand the country; it’s the synthesis of Saudi Arabia’s rich history. I also enjoy the National Museum and of course, the Edge of the World which is truly remarkable. Embassy of Mexico

Shining Light on Southern Italian Cuisine BY JANELLE VALES-YASAY

There’s nothing like traveling the world to sample the great cuisines of each nation. However, you don’t have to travel to southern Italy just to taste their renowned dishes. Fiamma is right here in Riyadh.

F

iamma started with a spark: a young boy who used to see his mother and grandmother in their kitchen cooking vegetables and herbs grown in their yard. The boy grew into a teenager who took on jobs in pizzerias and ice cream shops in Calabria during summertime. The teenager grew into a chef with over 20 years of culinary experience. And now he’s here in Riyadh sharing stories and recipes. Chef Valerio Mazzei is the flame in this kitchen! Chef Mazzei has worked in some of the best restaurants in the world alongside his brother celebrity Chef Francesco Mazzei. He learned from his family, his home, and his experiences. He has a career honed by hard work and perseverance. He’s bringing his passion to Fiamma. The restaurant, inspired by a small, bustling trattoria, is located in Centria Mall, currently “the address” to be of high-end restaurants and shops in Riyadh. Entering the restaurant felt like walking into the hold of a fancy boat with its fancy dark wood tables and chairs, black leather couches

26

EAT and touches of blue and white. The soaring space has a wonderful view of two of the busiest streets in Riyadh: Tahlia and Olaya. The restaurant has an open kitchen format where the chef and his staff create their culinary masterpieces. It opens for lunch and dinner with menus that are well-curated. The dishes skip trends but indulge in tried-and-tested flavors and classic techniques; all are freshly-made each day. The service is friendly and warm. And just like the enduring passion of its chef, the cooking in Fiamma is timeless. Flavors from childhood intertwined with the changes and innovation of the modern times make for great meals that are certified crowd-pleasers. Our dinner started with the Burrata, Rucola e Frajotta. As someone who enters Italian restaurants with the hopes of having the creamy Italian delicacy for my starter, I was gripped with excitement for Fiamma’s version. The outside has a subtle bounce but the inside is utterly creamy and smooth. The chili jam elevates it to another notch of deliciousness; the spicy surprise caught me off guard but my taste buds were thrilled. Elements of surprise are present in each Fiamma dish. Take the Zucchini Fritti, for example. Who would have

thought fries can be this healthy and good at the same time? I didn’t miss the usual fries while munching these crispy, tasty treats. What potato fries? The Ravioli Ricotta Y Burrata has a pleasing rightness to it. It looks so simple in the pan; devoid of anything but a small pool of melted butter, a sprinkle of cheese, and a lone basil leaf on top. Chef Mazzei drizzled some balsamic vinegar and the dish is complete. Waves of ricotta and burrata burst in our mouths punctuated with the sweet-tart flavor of the vinegar. Everything was beautifully-balanced. Our search for more depth and breadth ended with the Pappardelle Bolognese, one of the dishes that graced the Chef’s Special list. The fresh pasta swirled in a tomato-based sauce with minced beef is one of the most satisfying dishes in Fiamma. It has a heft to it: the pasta with its bite and the sauce with its bursting flavor. We segued into the Beef Fillet, a tasty hunk of beef tenderloin with mushroom sauce on a bed of truffle mashed potato. This is a dish that’s special yet unpretentious. We look at it and do not notice anything fancy but when it reaches our tongues, we taste the meat and feel its tenderness. The desserts in Fiamma are timeless classics: simple yet confident. We love the Tiramisu and Crema Di Limoni but the Pannacotta takes the cake. It’s quite addictive. One of the best compliments a chef gets is when diners tell them that they brought Italy to them and they never feel the need to travel to Italy just to eat the food they loved in that place. Chef Mazzei often hears this and it keeps his passionate flame for cooking burning. Fiamma remains as Riyadh’s light to southern Italian cuisine.

The inspiration for Feed the Need KSA came from Feed the Need Bahrain, which was set-up as a way of giving back to the community, bringing people together and addressing food waste.

Since its first fridge in 2015, Feed The Need KSA has come a long way. Under the management of CEO Lama Aladalah, it now operates under the sponsorship of a local women’s charitable association called Bunyan, which itself was set-up to provide support to families. Feed The Need KSA currently operates and supports 14 fridges around Riyadh through community food donations such as fruit, snacks, juices, water, canned beans etc. The fridge locations can be found here: https://goo.gl/MA7ndV In addition to keeping fridges full, the organization also holds food distribution in less affluent areas or workers’ camps. This Ramadan, it will be hosting a number of events including: a) Cooked meal distribution event on Friday, May 18, 2018, where members of the community will cook rice and chicken dishes to be distributed around the fridges by volunteers before iftar; b) F ood bag distribution event on Friday, June 1, 2018, where volunteers will be distributing food bags near the fridges.

Since Feed the Need KSA was first set up in 2015, there has been a lot of interest from community groups and businesses around the community. This is because the group believes community fridges should be open to all to promote inclusivity and dignity giving anyone a chance to give as well as to receive. Additionally, their initiative which includes only volunteers is an opportunity to contribute to the community while learning new skills or sharing existing skills. If you would like to help, donate or organize an event for your local community please get in touch! Flourishing Verdure BY ALYAA MALIK

Step into the lush floors of Verdure and notice the French flair in their food, ambiance, and service.

T

he word ‘Verdure’ commands the entrance of the restaurant, shrouded by an array of greenery that seems perceivable for a place named after the color of green vegetation. The sliding doors welcome you in, and while there is no direct farmland to be found as the name suggests, the indoor space clearly spoke the language of a classic European ambiance. We were seated in a quiet, pastel brown sofa; I touch the perfect white linen where the arranged cutlery lies and as I see a single rose in full bloom, I thought it added a living touch to every table in the room. Across from where I sat were walls made of glass, allowing me to gaze upon the outdoor seating that had hues of blue and brown. It looked fitting for a more relaxed, al fresco dining, perhaps even having a cup of coffee alone. The waiter arrived and read us the specials of the restaurant. There is a vast selection of international recipes, including those that make use of expensive, fresh truffles. They offer premium Wagyu and Black Angus steaks that’s been aged for at least 33 days and their poultry items were all organic. They also boast of their seasonal, seafood choices such as the Greek seabream, Spanish seabass, tiger prawns and local lobsters. To start off though, we order the Grape Mojito and Cosmo Crush Mocktail first. Both were cooling and reminiscent of a perfect drink under the summer sun.

34

Our appetizers were composed of the Italian Buratta and Pear, Walnut and Orange Salad. The play on textures of the latter brought us delight along with its light zest and their burrata was sturdier and creamier than most of the kinds we’ve tasted.

Our plates were then cleared for our entrees, which included two of their bestsellers: Braised Short Rib with Mashed Potatoes and the Spanish Seabass with grilled vegetables. The beef was sultry soft and the sauce rich with flavor, most likely infused with the juices of the meat. After a few bites though, we turned to the fish for a lighter fare. A squeeze of the flash fired lemon and a dash of salt on top answered our palate’s satisfaction. Dessert eventually completed our evening with a hot skillet of brioche cake and the ever timeless chocolate fondant. Out of the three dipping sauces, we cared most for the caramel to match each pinch of the brioche. The chocolate fondant was masterfully cooked, oozing with warm, liquid batter at first slice and leaving a strong, dark chocolate taste to that is sure to be remembered. Verdure’s refined food is attributed to a team of cooks with Michelin star backgrounds and it is worth taking your special someone to for an intimate evening under their mesmerizing ceiling lights that look like a starry, starry night. HANDMADE IN SAUDI ARABIA

M

eet Sheelagh Arthurs, the creative entrepreneur making a positive impact on our community and environment. Her ShaMOUaee candles are made up of all natural oils and soy wax, with an Arabian flair. Tell us about yourself. Sheelagh Arthurs (SA): I’m Irish, left during “The Troubles” and have lived outside Ireland since. But it’s always my home. I came to Riyadh in 1981. I enjoy painting, pottery, yoga, reading, spending time with my grandchildren, and traveling with my husband. Why/When did you start ShaMOUaee? SA: I started the business in 2013 after organizing a Green Expo in Riyadh. While looking for environmentally friendly products, I noticed there was a lack of soy candles in Riyadh. I looked at this as an opportunity and a challenge and started to learn about natural oils and candle making. I took some classes in Europe and spent time learning about natural oils and fragrances, the effect they have on our bodies and minds. What makes your products unique? SA: Our products are handmade in Saudi Arabia. We base most of our fragrances on local and popular Saudi oils such 38

as oud, musk, and amber. Our signature containers can be recycled, repurposed and reused. What are the values of your company? SA: We strive to use all natural oils; we do not use preservatives. Our core values include the 3Rs: recycle, repurpose and re-use, which can be seen in our packaging. We also believe in giving our customers the best value for their money by keeping our prices reasonable and using only top quality ingredients. What was the most challenging part of starting your business? SA: Without a doubt maintaining a steady supply of Eco Soy Wax. Recently the entire candle business took a big hit as the main supplier withdrew the best selling soy wax from the market. We are all working on the new replacement wax, also 100% natural soy. Getting our brand name out there and being recognized has also been a challenge. Do you have advice for aspiring entrepreneurs? SA: As with life, there are always risks in business and no guarantees unless you get out there and take the risk you will never know just how successful you can be. If you don’t try you will never know what you are capable of.

Mr. Oliver Oehms, Her Royal Highness Princess Johara bint Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and German Ambassador Dieter Haller

What are your best selling products? SA: The best sellers are Desert Blend and Oud fragrance candles, which many expatriates buy as a gift or souvenir for their loved ones back home. The other best seller is our indulgent and luxurious Massage Candles, a spa treatment for a fraction of the price you would pay in a salon. ShaMOUaee products are sold at Candles & Chalk Studio and the ShaMOUaee Facebook page and via Instagram, along with Desert Designs, Four Seasons, The Blossom Tree at Al Bustan, Luthan Hotel and in various coffee mornings and bazaars in Riyadh. In Jeddah, they’re available at ShaMOUaee. Jeddah. In Kuwait, at the Ornamentaliste, and in Dubai.

Tell us about yourself. My name is Jurgita Bartnykaite Abu Eleiz. I’m a mom, fashion designer, and baker. I moved to Riyadh three and a half years ago when my husband started working here and I’ve really enjoyed living in the Diplomatic Quarter since then. Tell us a little about your bakery It’s a home-based bakery named Sweet Surrender. I decided to start it last year, a few weeks before leaving Riyadh for the summer holidays. I couldn’t stop after I had returned because I had so many people come to me with so many orders. All my sweets are tested and approved by my family and friends. I use superfoods, organic coconut, and freshly roasted nuts. I bake sweet pies, granola, cookies, and truffles. I bake traditional pies with raspberry or strawberry jams, date pies where I don’t use any refined sugar, crunchy coconut cookies, granola and the most popular is the chocolate lazy cake. All of these are made with lots of love and the highest quality ingredients. You can find Sweet Surrender on Instagram and Facebook as sweetsurrender_jurgasweets or WhatsApp me for orders at +966 56 676 0921.

What is a typical day like for you? I start my day by dropping my children off at school in the early morning. On my way back home, I usually stop by the grocery store. After shopping, I usually meet my friends. We do morning picnics at least once a week in Yamama park, or we go for a ride around the DQ on our bicycles. After my children come home from school, we have lunch and head to Al Manahil Center to do their activities. I’m so proud of them. Once we return home, we complete any homework, have dinner and perform our evening rituals. After I put my children to sleep, I start baking - that’s how I make sure the sweets are always fresh. What do you like most about the DQ? I think what I like the most about the DQ is that I don’t have to wear an abaya here. I also love that we have so many walking trails and so much space for riding bikes. I love the beautiful parks, sports facilities, coffee shops, and restaurants. I really love this freedom! What is something you wish the DQ had but currently doesn’t? Well, the DQ has so much to offer but I hope that Paul will open a branch here in the DQ soon. Where are your favorite places to visit in Riyadh? My favorite place to visit in Riyadh is the DQ walking trail near my home. Also, my kids really enjoyed riding scooters in the Kindy square, it has the best flooring for scooters. What are you looking forward to in the coming season? I can’t wait to see the finished project in the Kindy Plaza. Any recommendations for your DQ neighbors? Enjoy the beautiful parks and walking trails here and please don’t litter.

Surrender to these sweets! Have a luscious chocolate truffle!
