FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the May-June Issue of DQ Living Magazine. In only a few short years, we have seen some major developments in the Diplomatic Quarter (DQ) that have greatly improved the DQ lifestyle. Our community now boasts of world class educational institutions such as the British International School, remarkable dining establishments, and the luxury shopping center 1364 is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of this year. We also witnessed the highly anticipated opening of CORE Social Wellness Club. CORE brings us ENCORE restaurant, COREx classes, CORE Spa, CORE Fit and more. As modernity moves us forward in the DQ, the traditions and heritage of Saudi Arabia also takes a spotlight in this issue. We delve into the tapestry of Saudi clothing from various regions, must-visit heritage sites, unexplored museums, local artists, and even touch on the Year of Saudi Coffee. We hope to give our readers a deeper understanding of what Saudi culture is all about. In that regard, we were delighted to connect with many of the dynamic Wives of Heads of Mission, and learn what they like most about the DQ and Saudi Arabia. Our coverage has never been confined to the DQ. There is a lot happening in the country, including the ongoing Jeddah Season. Read on our primer of all their events and activities in this issue. For our Eat feature, one of our favorite restaurants, Yauatcha, has launched their summer menu and it’s definitely worth a try. We wish everyone an eventful summer ahead!

Culture, heritage, and traditions are some of the most exciting things about a country, and Saudi Arabia has a lot of these. Immerse in the uniqueness of their customs and traditional apparel and discover the myriad of threads woven into the everyday fabric of the Saudi people’s lives. The culture, tradition and customs of Saudi Arabia are largely influenced by the climate, religion and terrain of the land. The Arabian Peninsula has a culture which is as intricate as its people. It is vastly influenced by the Bedouin lifestyle and Islam. The tribal influences make each province of the Kingdom unique and celebrated. The Saudi people are wellknown for their hospitality, generosity, and honor. Being the birthplace of Islam, the Saudis are known to welcome the guests of Allah with pomp and fervor especially during the month of Ramadan and for Hajj. Islamic influence can extensively be seen in all extents of the society- legal, familial, social and political. Culturally, the Kingdom is known for its pottery, weaving, poetry, literature and the Ardha. The Ardha is done by wielding swords. In recent years a lot has been done to protect the history and customs of the land. In 2022, for the very first time, February 22nd was celebrated as Founding Day to celebrate the history and culture of the Saudi State. The National Day is celebrated on the 23rd of September every year.

Lately, a lot of artistic space is being given for open museums featuring portraits and paintings with a backdrop of Arabic poetry. Poetry is encouraged in Islam and Saudi Arabia has produced great poets of its time. Poetry is the matriarch of the Arabic language and has helped literature grow enormously in Arabia. Najd and Hejazi are common forms of poetry here. Poetry was used to propagate social and religious messages to the common man. The food culture of Saudi Arabia is one of the best in the world. It is as varied as the culture here. Dates, yoghurt, seafood, poultry and lamb serve base to the cuisine of the region. Arabia is famous for its teahouses and cafes which

serve the infamously famous Kahwa (coffee) and mint tea. The Ministry of Culture has declared the year 2022 as the Year of Saudi Coffee (see page 48 of this issue for more details) . The nomadic Arabs who roamed the Arabian Peninsula utilized easily available resources in a sustainable way. The culture and customs of any place sprout from the intrinsic creativity of the people. One such talent is Sadu Weaving (a form of embroidery) which is currently creating waves in the fashion world; an art form of yore which is making a grand comeback. Using raw material available from sheep and camels, yarn used to be spun in various designs and patterns reflecting the lifestyle of the tribes. Sadu

Weaving has recently been added to the list of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Saudi people are known for their modest yet chic sense of dressing. The traditional costumes for men and women vary from region to region within the country. From the flower crowns of Asir to the pearl hair decor in the Western Province, variation is seen across urban and rural areas. Each Saudi region preferred a different clothing and embroidery style. Inhabitants in the mountainous region wear dark colored clothes whereas lighter shades are preferred in the coastal regions. Generically, traditional garments in this region are loose and floor-length. For men and women, there are variations of a loose ankle-length shirt with full sleeves called the thawb. For the women, there’s a vast choice of floor-length frocks, maxi dresses, kaftans, jallabiyahs depending on the aforementioned factors.

8

At ceremonial occasions and festivals, Saudi men wear Thawb over which is worn a coat called the bisht. The bisht is made up of camel hair or wool. The entire look is topped off with the shemagh or ghutra - a red and white checkered square piece of cloth, which is worn over the head. The shemagh is kept in place with a braided circular cord called an igal. A taqiyah (skullcap) is also used on the head to provide more stability to the shemagh. The traditional clothes of each province are as follows. CENTRAL REGION (NAJD) This region is also referred to as the Riyadh Province. Apart from the abaya which is worn with a headpiece called the shaila, women also preferred to wear Al Mukhnaq, a silky outer garment made of chiffon or tulle. More popular among the traditional dresses of the Najd are the toor and menikhel which are worn on special occasions and are made of sequined black tulle.

MAY-JUN 2022 DQ LIVING MAGAZINE

Abayas in the Najd society differed depending on social status and standard. Golden buttons and threads were used to symbolize the upper strata of the society. Due to the dryness of the region, the populaces’ clothes were known for their wide sleeves to catch breeze and retain moisture in the body. The men wore the bisht over their white (in summer) or black/blue (in winter) thawbs. The bisht is usually worn on important occasions like weddings, Eids, funerals et al. EASTERN REGION Dara’a is an unattached garment which is used by women as the main garment in the Eastern region. Depending on the fabric, embroidery and occasions, the Dara’a differ namely, umm asa, mufhaha and the modern version nafnuf. A traditional thawb would be worn over the dara’a. A bridal costume would comprise of a green Dara’a called nashil over which would be worn a Thawb. The thawb al-nashil was greatly influenced by shades worn in India, a courtesy of the merchants who trav-

elled for trade. A pair of pants sirwal and a scarf al-Mshamar tie down the outfit. Elderly women in this region also favored to wear a golden mask when venturing out which left the eyes uncovered known as the batoola. Al-Ahsa is famous for kitting traditional clothes such as the bisht. NORTHERN PROVINCE The thawbs worn in this region are the most practical in design owing to the harsh mountainous terrain and cold. For ease of movement, the women in these lands wore dresses sparsely embroidered with fine line stitching. There thawbs were stitched longer in size in order for the material to be tucked at the waist. These outer thawbs are labelled as al-midrgah and were usually black in colour. The dresses worn in this region were vastly influenced by the surrounding areas and neighbouring countries. Trade and travels brought along material and influences from far off places that were incorporated into the traditional garb of the land.

9

DQ LIVING MAGAZINE MAY-JUN 2022

The men and women here garb themselves in thicker fabrics and trousers owing to the frigid weather. SOUTHERN REGION The dresses worn in the Southern Province of Saudi Arabia are a riot of colors and patterns. Saudi women in the south wear beautiful black thawbs (called mujanab) which are decorated on the corners with different colored threads or beads and the attire is fastened with a yellow or red band. These thawbs are locally known as al-muwarah and al mubgl. On festive occasions, over their square scarves, women also wear silver forehead accessories. They also tie the sheylas over their heads with a yellow or red band. Men wear colorful embroidered wrap around trousers, jubbah, and carry a dagger. The thawb al mujanab is embroidered with the Qatt pattern and completed off with silver meshes at the waist. They also wear flower headdresses and are commonly referred to as the “Flower Men of the South”.

The Asir region of Saudi Arabia is very colorful when compared to the rest of the country. Asiri men wear brightly hued flower wreaths on their head. Their dresses are patterned with geometrical motifs that reflect the rich and green heritage of the land. Famed art form from this land is the Al-Qatt pattern. It comprises of dots, triangles, lines, and squares drawn on the bare interior walls of majlis and then filled with locally acquired colors sourced from indigenous resources, for instance- rocks, flowers and leaves. Al-Qatt Al-Asiri is inscribed on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This has naturally had a great influence on the fashion of the region too. WESTERN PROVINCE (HEJAZ) This province is also known as the Hejaz region. The cities of Makkah and Madinah are central to this region. The cosmopolitan city of Jeddah, bordering the Red Sea, is also known as the Gateway to Makkah. Hijazi men are known to dress themselves up in thawbs over which they wear a sudairi (vest) and their headdress comprises of the shemagh and igal.

DQ LIVING MAGAZINE MAY-JUN 2022

The women wear beautiful ornate headpieces and dresses embossed with gold embroidery. The coastal shores have brought in influences in designs from India, Persia, Egypt and other surrounding countries. The Ministry of Culture is doing much to make the younger generation aware of their roots and rich culture. Events like Riyadh Season, Jeddah

Season and the Al Ula Tourism are prime examples of the exemplary work that is being done. One such establishment that celebrates the past and future of Saudi Arabia is the King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture (Ithra) in Dhahran. ART PATTERNS OF SAUDI ARABIA When culture is infused in art, we get these patterns that show the creativity of the Saudi people, harness their history, and strengthen the identity of Saudi Arabia.

SADU is the most popular pattern that reflects the simple and pure desert environment in its rhythmic, repetitive, and symmetrical geometric design. Commonly seen in Bedouin weaving, tents and rugs.

SHALKY is a floral pattern commonly seen in fabrics used for house dresses and handicrafts. It has a common flower symbol and comes in bright, lively colors.

AL QATT AL ASIRI is a traditionally female interior wall decoration composed of colorful icons of geometric shapes and symbols. Considered as a key element to the identity of the Asir region, this pattern is usually found in walls and doors of houses painted as a form of social bonding for families and communities.

NAJD is inspired by the Central region’s nature: from its palms and flowers to sun rays and mountains. It is commonly seen in family homes, esp. in doors, to welcome guests.

TOP 10 MUST-VISIT HERITAGE SITES IN SAUDI ARABIA ZENIA DUELL Photo Credit: Ministry of Culture

Come and explore Saudi Arabia’s best heritage sites and learn more about the Kingdom’s culture, history, and nature!

18

MAY-JUN 2022 DQ LIVING MAGAZINE

DO To outsiders, Saudi Arabia seems to be a land consisting of only sand and oil – but new research and efforts to revive the local heritage and pre-Islamic history have revealed that Saudi Arabia was in fact a hotspot for trade, indigenous powerful tribes and beautiful artistic creations. With the launch of the new Heritage Commission in 2020, the Saudi Ministry of Culture is placing fresh importance on protecting, elevating and promoting Saudi Arabia’s rich heritage. We have created a top ten list for heritage enthusiasts, to guide your discovery of the country’s best historical sites. Keep this article and tick off the sites as you go!

1. ALULA Top of the list, of course, has to be AlUla. The ancient site has undergone extensive modern development and investment to create a unique and magical experience. There’s something for everyone at AlUla: adventure enthusiasts can

take a zipwire or hot air balloon across the breathtaking landscape; outdoor types can hike through Dadan and Hegra; history nerds can gape in awe at Madain Saleh and Jebel Ikmah; culture vultures can descend on Maraya concert hall and Jadidah district in AlUla old town. Go during the winter season when the Royal Commission for AlUla runs their Winter at Tantora series of events, which includes wellness retreats, concert series and art exhibitions. https://goo.gl/maps/ibG2tgNJcFKPF7kS6

📍

2. DIRIYAH On the outskirts of Riyadh, the old royal city of Diriyah provides an insight into what life in Saudi Arabia used to be like before King Abdulaziz. The area is currently undergoing significant restoration and will soon become a center for boutique hotels and cafes. When it opens to the public, book a historical tour and light show at the Al-Turaif UNESCO World Heritage Site. https://goo.gl/maps/TgRF51GHnRK1GQg88

📍

19

3. AL BALAD The old district of Jeddah has undergone restoration since the 1970s and is now a charming, fashionable, artistic district in which it is easy to lose yourself just exploring its many alley ways and gazing up at its beautiful buildings. https://goo.gl/maps/VPBxRnWShn4EYeYd9

📍

4. NAJRAN This region of southern Saudi Arabia, close to the border with Yemen, is famous for its early Islamic inscriptions which chart the early evolution and spread of Islam among the native Arabian tribes. The inscriptions are in both native ancient languages such as Musnad and Nabatean, as well as Quranic Arabic. In Al Okhdood fortress, inscriptions and rock art provide evidence of much earlier inhabitants of the area, too. https://goo.gl/maps/23trh2XXk7gfWhXr8

📍

5. QARYAT AL FAW The ancient town of Qaryat al Faw served as a market town and stopping point on the crossroads of the famous Incense Route, which traversed Arabia from Yemen to the Red Sea. Home to travelers from the Mediterranean to the Far East, the archaeology of Qaryat al Faw reveals many cultural influences, including Greek, Indian and native Arabian. While the best treasures from Qaryat al Faw are in the National Museum in Riyadh, the site itself is undergoing preservation efforts and can be accessed as part of a tour of the Empty Quarter. https://goo.gl/maps/Qcxtv6RXRi3xhGYJ8

📍

6. HA’IL The ancient Mesopotamian king Nabonidus was a rather unique character. He got bored of court life in Babylon and instead moved out to the desert in Ha’il for ten years, where cuneiform inscriptions commemorate his presence. It is further proof that Saudi Arabia was far from the isolated desert stronghold we imagine it to be – in ancient times it was a bustling thoroughfare for kings, armies and traders. In order to hunt down this elusive and characterful Mesopotamian king, you’ll need to drive to Al Hait, a couple of hours away from Hail (you can also access it by driving north from Medina). Al Hait is an openair museum showcasing not only these cuneiform inscriptions and depictions of Nabonidus, but also early Islamic traditional houses. https://goo.gl/maps/iikMdA1pfj4ZyDzeA

📍

21

DQ LIVING MAGAZINE MAY-JUN 2022

7. HOFUF This charming town in Al Ahsa is home to some of the world’s largest date farms, a historic souq and the enigmatic Al Qara mountain, whose cave systems have been inhabited for over 5000 years. The structure of the caves keeps them at a consistent temperature year-round, which is why they have been used for everything from royal conferences to prophets’ hideouts. https://goo.gl/maps/6ct4f27YmbaZGaCP6

📍

8. YANBU A few hours’ drive north of Jeddah lies the beautiful Red Sea port of Yanbu. The northern part of the city holds the cultural heritage, including a pristine waterfront, a natural oasis, townhouses made of coral, and a restored house that the British writer and spy TE Lawrence used to live in. https://goo.gl/maps/LVhEzU2c5yut4B337

📍 22

MAY-JUN 2022 DQ LIVING MAGAZINE

9. FARASAN ISLANDS While Farasan islands off the coast of Jazan offer tourists stunning, quiet beaches and unique wildlife, they also play host to some fascinating history. Many inscriptions found both on the island and in ancient texts attest to the presence of the Roman Empire’s southernmost outpost on Farasan – known in Latin as Portus Ferresanus. This was a thousand kilometers south of both the nearest Roman port in Egypt and the nearest Roman trading hub, Petra. Roman influence remained at this lonely outpost until the conquest of Arabia by Islamic powers. The tiny islands are also home to an Ottoman-era fort and preserved examples of traditional local houses. https://goo.gl/maps/Xid4zLjLNFGzwbS27

📍

10. AL JOUF Home to the world’s largest modern olive farm and supplier of the Kingdom’s olive oil, Al Jouf is the place to be for olive lovers – especially during the Olive Oil Festival every January. If you prefer history to olives, stop by Marid castle – just half an hour away from Sakaka airport. The castle was originally a Roman/ Nabatean fort and was stormed by Queen Zenobia of Palmyra when she rebelled against the Romans in the 2nd century AD. For those who like more recent history, Zaabal Castle is just 200 years old; it features fascinating water management systems (a staple of desert life) and offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. https://goo.gl/maps/LqxJDP5jfrbJRPXq5

HA’IL: MORE THAN ANCIENT HISTORY SHERIDAN SWATHWOOD “Inshallah, you will taste it.” I could tell Hanan Alanazi took a great deal of pride in her roots as we talked about her home. Hanan is from the north-central Ha’il region, one of 13 provinces in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. If you undertake the roughly six-hour drive from Riyadh to Ha’il, you’ll find much more than just a change in land-

28

scape. You’ll also find a rich culture, ancient history, and delicious food. When Hanan and I first started our conversation, the first thing she told me about was Samri, a traditional dance she says that originated in Ha’il. In

FUN FACTS ABOUT HA’IL • Ha’il is much cooler than Riyadh. In summer, the average temperature is roughly 5° lower. In winter, temperatures can drop as low as 0°! • Winter weather can be dangerous! Hanan says hail storms drop golf-ball sized chunks of ice several times a season in Ha’il.

Samri, two rows of men sit on their knees facing each other. They sing poetry, clap, and sway to the rhythm of a drum. “Samri” literally translates to “frolicsome,” and Hanan explained that the dance is still performed at weddings and other celebrations in Ha’il today. Ha’il is also home to many mountain ranges. The twin ranges of ‘Aja and Salma are the most famous, but lesser known mountains boast of ancient history. Rock carvings on two mountains, one in Jubbah and the other at Shuwaymis, are estimated to be 10,000 years old. Petroglyphs depict camels, men wearing armor, and even a pair of animals pulling a wheeled cart. The artwork in Ha’il is one of just five UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kingdom. You can’t think about culture without including food, and Ha’il has its own unique food too. Hanan told me that Ha’il is home to two delicious dishes: makshoosh and kabyebat. Hanan describes kabyebat as “rice and vegetables cooked in a special way.” While kabyebat is more of a main dish, makshoosh is pure comfort food. It is Hanan’s favorite

dish to make herself. Makshoosh is similar to pancakes, made from small circles of dough and coated in honey. “When I make it, I think of my grandfather. He used to make it for us and for our father when we were young. My father loved it too,” Hanan smiled, “You must try it if you can. Inshallah, you will taste it one day." Hanan Alanazi is one of many guides who come from all across the country to teach Saudi language and culture at Arabius. If you are interested in learning more, go to www.arabius.com.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: ALAA ALI MOGHAWI PALAVI KELE The vibrant art of Al-Qatt Al-Asiri has been passed from generation to generation. It's now Alaa Ali Moghawi's turn. Alaa Ali Moghawi is a Saudi artist who specializes in AlQatt Al-Asiri, an ancient art native to the mountainous region of Asir in southern Saudi Arabia. She grew up in the 10th century gingerbread village of Rijal Almaa, a recently recognized UNESCO World Heritage site nestled in lush green mountains with stone houses and colorful wooden windows. Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, the art form that made it to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in 2017 is best described with vibrant colored geometric patterns adorning doors, walls, household items and furniture. It is historically a women's art form that was passed down through generations for 300 years. Alaa was in-

30

spired by her mother, Fatima Faye Al-Almai, who is a popular Al-Qatt artist in her village. In fact, there’s a museum in Abha (50 kms west of Rijal Almaa) named after her. It displays a rich collection of cultural items belonging to the Asiri women and their lifestyle. “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has great cultural and artistic diversity, and we are glad that the world is getting to know about it,” Alaa says with pride. Traditionally, the colors used in Al Qatt paintings were extracted from indigenous resources. For instance, red from Al Meshgah ochre of Asir rocks; black from charcoal; yellow from turmeric root and pomegranate albedo; green from freshly cut grass and blue from wild-

FEATURE flowers. A layer of Arabic glue is applied to the paintings for its glaze. What Alaa loves the most about her art is being able to paint with natural dyes. “It also reminds me of all the Asiri women who drew inspiration from the beautiful landscape of the region”, she adds. However, substituting them with acrylic paints is less time consuming and thus, gaining popularity in recent times. This decorative art also served as a form of expression for Asiri women. Each element in the painting is significant - the mountains, girls standing or dancing together, the wheat bran, patterned embroidery from Saudi national attire of Abaya and Bisht, patterns symbolic of the Holy Quran (Al Khatmah), traditional scarf design (Lihaf), among others. Mastering this art form requires creative innovation and plenty of patience. Imagine having to use your nails and hands to precisely measure the geometric shapes back in the day! Having mastered the Al Qatt art, Alaa has participated in several events like Artigiano in Feira (Italy), Ministry of Tourism and Heritage Commission, Art and Intelligence Hackathon while studying at Al Faisal University and more recently, at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai (UAE). Currently, she teaches at The Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (TRITA) in Riyadh. Alaa knows what she wants. “I have three main goals”, she affirms. “To create more art, to conduct many more workshops, and to promote Al Qatt locally and globally”. If you would like to learn this traditional art form or buy it, you can get in touch with her on Instagram @qatt_art.

THE WORLD'S MOST EXCLUSIVE LIFESTYLE COMPANY A glimpse into CORE LIFE with CEO, Mr. Justin Musgrove

SARAH HOFFMAN Introducing a new luxury lifestyle company– one that promotes human potential and improves personal wellbeing. CORE Social Wellness Club is an innovative center built on the pillars of nutrition, social, fitness, and wellness. The CORE community is one of the high achievers and change makers; those who want the most out of life and can afford it. This privately owned Saudi company was started in January 2019 and already has four locations: one in Jeddah, two in Egypt (WOC & Pyramid Hills) and one in Riyadh DQ, with more in the works. The concept of CORE came from the needs of its founders in Jeddah. They were tired of driving around the city to meet their wellness needs. They desired a place to train, rejuvenate in the spa, and have a business meeting over lunch, all in one inspiring location. No time was wasted and within one year the first CORE Social Wellness Club location opened in Jeddah. The CORE Life leadership team understands that if you want to be world class, you need to have world class talent. In June 2021, Mr. Justin Musgrove was brought on board to head CORE’s expansion. Mr. Musgrove built his accomplished career in leisure and hospitality in the UK. Inspired by the Crown Prince’s Vision 2030, he came to the Kingdom in 2019 to lead Saudi fitness company, Leejam. In 2021, as the fitness industry recovered from the Corona pandemic, Mr. Musgrove was approached to manage a start-up called CORE. When he met the founders, saw the product, and understood the vision, he quickly realized there was nothing else like it. He saw running this start-up as an exciting new challenge with incredible potential, and accepting the role as CEO.

32

Each CORE location is unique, posing new challenges and new learning opportunities. As Mr. Musgove says “everyday is a school day in a start-up”. CORE DQ was opened in December 2021 and it replaced the former DQ Sports Facilities, which was impressive in nature but had not been renovated since it opened in the early 1980s. Significantly larger than CORE Jeddah, CORE DQ offers a multitude of services, from COREx group classes, ENCORE restaurant, luxury villas, a male and female spa, business meeting rooms, a cigar lounge and much more is on the way. CORE members describe CORE as a “home away from home”. The predominantly Saudi customer service team goes to every length to help members feel welcome and comfortable. The health benefits may drive members to join but the CORE community is a big reason why they stay. From monthly social events, to hiking trips in Taif, and even culinary adventures in Tuscany, CORE goes beyond traditional wellness. CORE curates stimulating experiences for its member community that simply can not be found elsewhere. Mr. Musgrove offers wise advice for those aspiring to enter the wellness space. His first piece of advice is “Learn your trade.” Whether as a fitness trainer, spa esthetician, or food and beverage server, it’s most important to know your craft. Also, don’t be afraid to start from the bottom. We hear about people when they are at the height of their career, rarely do we see all the steps they had to take to get there. Micheal Jordan said “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” If you are one of the latter, then the CORE Life may be for you.

DISCUSSION WITH

H.E. NUNO MATHIAS

AMBASSADOR OF PORTUGAL ALEXANDER WOODMAN Before coming to Saudi Arabia, I had the pleasure to meet H.R.H. Prince Saud bin Abdul Mohsen bin Abdul Aziz the Kingdom’s Ambassador to Portugal, and I know that we share the same enthusiasm and commitment to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries. Upon my arrival to KSA, I was quickly faced with a contrasting reality, showcased in the recent social and economic transformations, and soon realised the endless opportunities associated with the Vision 2030. “We are only limited by our own energies” was early advice that I received from a Saudi friend on how to strengthen our bilateral relations. Among many of those opportunities that lie ahead, the launching of direct flights between Lisbon and Riyadh would undoubtably constitute an important milestone in bridging the two countries closer together. In January 2022, H.E. Nuno Mathias was appointed as the Ambassador of Portugal to Saudi Arabia. A career-diplomat, H.E. Mathias joined the diplomatic service in 1993. Before the appointment in the Kingdom, Ambassador Mathias served as Deputy Permanent Representative of Portugal to the United Nations in New York, NY. The Ambassador has also served in Washington, DC and Mozambique.

38

Please, discuss the economic, social, and investment opportunities presented by the Saudi-Portuguese Joint Committee. Why should Saudi entrepreneurs invest in Portugal? Where do you see investment opportunities for Portuguese entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia?

What will be your remarks on the achievements of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Portugal over these four decades? As a newly appointed ambassador, how do you see the way forward?

The latest Saudi-Portuguese Joint Committee took place a year ago, thus culminating in the Fifth session since its creation in 2014. As in previous editions, it allowed us to clearly identify areas of increased mutual collaboration. This time, we decided to focus on the fields of education, agriculture, infrastructure and energy, tourism and industry.

We all know the relevance of the past to help us inform the future. I believe this is also valid regarding nations. The relationship between Portugal and Saudi Arabia is deeply rooted in their shared heritage, so it would be reductive to only look at it since the establishment of our diplomatic relations in 1980. I intend first and foremost to explore this shared heritage, that brings two countries closer, and implement a lot of what has been done, especially within the scope of our Joint Bilateral Commission.

None withstanding those specific areas, I believe Portugal has a lot to offer for Saudi investors through the access to European markets (more than 500 million people), connection to Portuguese-speaking markets (260 million people), stable democracy; 3rd most peaceful country in the world according to the Global Peace Index. In addition, Portugal is the 21st country in the world with better infrastructure, according to the Global Competitiveness Report. It has attractive incentives for foreign investors, a

MAY-JUN 2022 DQ LIVING MAGAZINE

highly-qualified labour force, immigrant friendly environment, to name just a few privileges. As for the Portuguese entrepreneurs’ perspective in the Saudi market, I believe that they may contribute and invest in KSA mainly in the fields of ICT, start-ups, and tourism. Portugal has a well-diversified economy with a long industrial tradition and companies with a strong practice of establishing abroad. Hence, Portuguese companies in agro-food, textiles, construction, engineering, machinery, or other industries can play an important role to that end. Saudi Arabia is on its way to economic transformation through Vision 2030. What are the assets of Portugal that can contribute to the modernization and diversification of Saudi economy? The Saudi Vision 2030 is a unique transformative economic and social reform framework that is opening Saudi Arabia up to the world and we want to be part of it. I believe that Portugal could bring in added value in know-how and best practices in many areas. The most obvious one is renewable energies, where we have developed the most advanced and efficient technologies. But also in other fields, such as start-up policy, public administration modernization or innovation policy. Over the next years, we will continue to host the Web Summit, Europe’s largest tech event, where we have early Saudi participants. Finally, I would remiss myself if I did not mention that Portugal is co-hosting with Kenya, the United Nations Ocean Conference which will be held in Lisbon, from 27 June to 1 July 2022. In order to generate greater awareness, in partnership with the UN Resident Coordinator and the Kenyan Ambassador, I have initiated and organized the “Riyadh Blue Talk” (May 24th). Considering the valuable contributions and efforts of Saudi Arabia to the conservation of marine environment at the national, regional and global levels, the “Riyadh Blue Talk” is an opportunity for the national stakeholders to exchange knowledge and solutions to solve pressing challenges. Tourism Strategy 2027 aims to position Portugal as one of the world's most competitive and sustainable destinations. Vision 2030 aims to make the Kingdom a leading tourism destination. What makes Portugal attractive for Saudis, and what will Portuguese discover in the Kingdom? Indeed, the World Tourism Organization puts Portugal on the 20th Top Tourism Destination in the World and the 6th in European Union (EU). With the 3rd most spo-

ken Western language in the World we have been able to attract yearly more and more tourists. Lisbon is becoming a tech hub for millennials priced out of London and New York. Our strategy and investment in the tourism sector has evolved and is now geared towards sustainability. We think this can serve as a role-model for many cities across the world, demonstrating clearly that sustainability and economic growth go hand in hand. Portugal is a medium-size country with an exceptional range of different landscapes, lots of leisure activities, and a unique cultural heritage, where tradition and modernity blend together in perfect harmony. This "concentrated" diversity, accessible within short driving distances, is Portugal's uniqueness. Regarding Saudi Arabia, I only have been here for 4 short months, and I have yet to unlock its full touristic potential. Having said that and taking into consideration the pattern of tourist destinations and activities chosen by my fellow countrymen, I would dare to say that Saudi Arabia fits the profile. It is an undiscovered country with a wide array of activities from culture to adventure, family and lifestyle activities that will attract a lot of Portuguese tourists, and will benefit from greater exposure in Portuguese travel guides. Similar to Saudi Arabia, Portugal has developed a distinctive culture and traditional values influenced by various civilizations. What are your thoughts on preserving the cultural identity and authenticity of the nation in this era of globalization? As I stated in the beginning of our conversation the past informs our future. Therefore, we should all strive to preserve our cultural identities and specificities in so far that they represent the singularity of our humanity. We can only benefit from distinctive culture and traditional values in an ever more globalized world. A good example is the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), united by a historical heritage, a common language and by a shared vision of the future. I am delighted to be able to share the culture of the CPLP with my colleagues the Ambassadors of Angola, Brazil, Equatorial-Guinea, Guiné-Bissau, and Mozambique in Riyadh. Another example is the King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue (KAICIID), that aims at promoting dialogue and understanding among different religions and cultures, that will be relocating to Lisbon.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

THE CEMENTING GROUND OF WIVES OF AMBASSADORS ALEXANDER WOODMAN Photo Credit: Abdallah Hachem The role of the Wives of the Ambassadors in Saudi Arabia cannot be underestimated. They are the ones who see and foresee many other aspects and details of diplomatic relationships and can be the voice of the society in which they live. Often, they are in the layers of the diplomatic field. Therefore, it is only beneficial to develop a genuine dialogue with them to get acquainted with their perspective, which can be most valuable. Here, I would like to make another important observation, which is directly related to their diverse backgrounds. Each of them comes from a distinct cultural and political background, yet the Kingdom becomes the cementing ground for them to become the mosaic of humanity. I was fascinated to develop a discussion with the Wives of Heads of Mission. The experience has helped me to better understand the world through the eyes of the wives of the Ambassadors.

I see DQ as a small town of its own, with restaurants, a supermarket, and countless parks, which are essential for a comfortable and cozy lifestyle. How does the DQ connect people? The first and most important feature of DQ is the concept of connecting people from different walks of life in a special way, hosting most of the embassies and diplomats. This creates a large international community bound by the vision and mission of advancing diplomacy in all areas.

What makes DQ and Saudi Arabia special? My husband grew up in Jeddah. Therefore, being posted to Saudi Arabia was like returning home. The hospitality and friendship I received from Saudis made the Kingdom incredibly special to me. As for DQ, I want to say that I enjoy spending time in this community, where I met many good friends. How does the DQ connect people? DQ is a one-of-a-kind place that brings together people from all over the world. During the lockdown, we adopted a Saluki, and every time we walk with him on the tracks, we meet a lot of friendly people who greet us. This is how people get connected in the DQ very naturally and innately.

It is believed that the best way to experience the world is through food. What is your favorite place to dine in the DQ? Favorite Saudi dish? My favorite places to dine in the DQ are Cafe Bateel and Marriott. My favorite Saudi dish is kabsa.

It is believed that the best way to experience the world is through food. What is your favorite place to dine in the DQ? Favorite Saudi dish? It is hard to name only one place in the DQ. However, one of my beloved places is Bateel, the remarkable Saudi brand. My favorite Saudi dish is jaresh, an authentic homemade meal perfectly combined with the western oat, and the traditional Saudi yogurt.

Saudi destinations that are still on your travel bucket list. Jazan and Abha are still on my bucket list.

Saudi destinations that are still on your travel bucket list. Abha, Jazan, Farasan island.

Arabic coffee or tea? Why? Definitely Arabic coffee, owing to its aroma, which keeps me active, motivated, and energized throughout the day.

Arabic coffee or tea? Why? Qahwa for sure! Each family has its own recipe for Arabic coffee, which is served only in 1/3 cups to extend communication with guests. What a smart way to entertain guests!

What is your best memory of the DQ so far? I will always miss the early morning walks in DQ and the feeling of absolute safety.

What is your best memory of the DQ so far? The farmer’s market is one of the best memories of DQ, which shows the diligent people who work for their motherland.

WHOM THOUGHTS ABOUT THE KINGDOM “I would certainly recommend visitors to travel to the ruins of Al-Ula for unforgettable memories and the opportunity to get acquainted with the legacy of past civilizations.” Hermine Maryam Tidjani, Cameroon

NGUYEN THI BICH VAN Vietnam What makes DQ and Saudi Arabia special? Saudi Arabia and the Middle East are mysterious to me. I want to explore the Kingdom and learn more about its rich culture. The DQ itself seems to be a very interesting place to explore. I have never seen anything similar to the DQ in any other country I lived in before. I will take my time to visit the restaurants, coffee shops, and the parks. How does the DQ connect people? I do not live in the DQ, but I can imagine that the design of the DQ as a special quarter already helps connect people from different countries. DQ allows newcomers to feel less "foreigners" in a new country, promotes mutual support, and establishes ties between neighbors who share much in common. It is believed that the best way to experience the world is through food. What is your favorite place to dine in the DQ? Favorite Saudi dish? It is still too early for me to pick a favorite place. My favorite Saudi dishes are hummus and kabsa. Saudi destinations that are still on your travel bucket list. Jeddah, Medina, Dammam, and more! I still have the whole list untouched! Arabic coffee or tea? Why? Tea. I am a tea person. What is your best memory of the DQ so far? My first diplomatic event was the Iftar, organized by the Royal Commission of Riyadh City in the DQ. Everything was new to me and I did not want to go. However, when we arrived, there was nothing as I was worried. We had a great time, and I met my new friends. This is my best memory so far.

“Saudi Arabia has become revelation for me with its culture, people, and immense hospitality. I am excited to learn Arabic to communicate with the locals.” Ulrike Lamlé, Germany “To enjoy a moment of serenity and watch the uninterrupted view of the horizon, I would recommend visiting the Edge of the World in Saudi Arabia.” Reiko Iwai, Japan “I believe that Al-Ula is a must-visit place as a culturally significant site under the protection of UNESCO.” Botagoz Arynova, Kazakhstan “In Saudi Arabia, what touched my soul and will stay with me are the warm hearts of Saudi ladies, life in the desert, and the summer heat.” Rose Oginga, Kenya Undoubtedly, the must-visit destination in the Kingdom is the holy Kaaba at the Great Al-Haram Mosque.” Nazgulia Maripova, Kyrgyzstan “I will take perfumes of Saudi Arabia so sensual and intense, sweet yet fresh at the base, embellished with amber, musk, and oud.” Gloria Hloniphile Rubushe, South Africa “In Saudi Arabia, I will recommend to visit Jalajil. According to the World Health Organization, Jalaji is the cleanest and healthiest city in the Kingdom.” Hsiuyi Shen (Candice), Taiwan “Besides the friendship that I will cultivate over the next three years, I will take date seeds and try to grow them in my garden back home.” Nguyen Thi Bich Van, Vietnam

THE SAUDI BREW ROSITSA DOROVSKA Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture named 2022 as the Year of Saudi Coffee. What is this liquid considered as the most popular drink in the Kingdom? Discover the Saudi coffee, a vital element in Saudi’s rich culture; it’s not only delicious, it’s also very symbolic.

If you have been around the Middle East for some time, you must already know that there is no such thing as too much gahwa (Arabic word for coffee). Being a staple of the bedouin culture for ages, the arabic coffee was recently rebranded across the Kingdom as “Saudi coffee'', in the framework of the “Saudi Coffee Initiative”, under the Ministry of Culture’s flagship.

bin Farhan Al-Saud, Minister of Culture and Governor of the Royal Commission for Al Ula, even encouraged his followers on Twitter to participate with their creative ideas in order to support the initiative. He mentioned that the Saudi coffee accompanies all moments in life and it conveys deep meanings of generosity, hospitality, cultural diversity, and specificity of the unique Saudi culture.

The whole year is designated to be The Year of Saudi Coffee, with a long lineup of events, scheduled throughout all regions. The government aims to promote the signature local brew and to distinguish the endemic sorts in active partnership with farmers, producers, business entities, coffee shops, hoteliers and the wider community. Prince Badr bin Abdullah

While foreigners usually have a love and hate relationship with gahwa due to its strong, specific taste, for the people with long term Gulf background - natives and expatriates alike - sipping Saudi coffee has always been a natural habit and a ritual with or without occasion. Offering it to guests is a requisite for hospitality.

FEATURE There is no Saudi home without a decent set of finjals, the tiny handless cups, and dallah, the coffee pot itself. The way of pouring the drink is also sort of an art, a small celebration for the guests, therefore it could be assigned to skillful waiters with the appropriate local attire. The finjal is refilled endless times, unless you shake the cup with your hand energetically to express you have had enough. Unlike in other cultures, Saudis like to have their gahwa in the afternoon, around sunset, until dark. Known for its revitalizing and stimulative effect, the drink has been initially disapproved by the religious scholars of the past. Depending on the region, it could be infused with zaffran, cardamom, cinnamon or cloves. To balance the bitterness, it is usually accompanied with sweet dates, tahini, dry fruits, and nuts. Gahwa is a very important part of the holy month of Ramadan, when people would often break their fast with a couple of dates and a cup of coffee. Found in Yemen, the arabica beans were spread around the peninsula more than 1000 years ago. The Khawlani Saudi beans are typical for the regions bordering Yemen. The Southern mountainous part of the Kingdom has the perfect conditions for growing the fruit, known as' ‘Kharazah” and this is one of the main profits for the local farmers. It takes approximately two to three years, until the tree is grown and able to produce the fruit, of which the gahwa would be made. Statistical data estimates 2,535 farms and 398,000

trees. Those small farmers are hailing the Ministry of Culture’s initiative to bolster the national economy with a boost of production and export for the coffee. This is in line with the Vision 2030 objectives. A special Arabian coffee institute, in partnership with the University of Copenhagen, was established at the beginning of the year to fulfill the goals of the initiative to promote the Saudi coffee worldwide - from its harvesting, through supporting local baristas and other gahwa specialists and cultivating a professional network across the Kingdom. The Institute is offering courses to educate the community and to enable homegrown talents in the field. The institute is based in Saudi Arabia with prospective expansion to Egypt, UAE, Qatar, and Jordan followed with plans to launch the first Arabic Coffee magazine. Meanwhile, the Public Investment Fund recently launched the Saudi Coffee Company and announced the intention to invest SAR 1.2 billion over 10 years to develop the industry and support the entire chain from beans to cup. The Saudi coffee is finally earning its spot locally and globally as a symbol of Saudi culture and authentic legacy. Yauatcha continues to cling on to the traditional essence of local Chinese dim sum and teahouses while they innovate and update their menu to further fascinate the Riyadhi taste.

EAT "I look forward to working with the talented culinary creatives at the company to bring our restaurant to even greater heights." - Chef Wayne, Yauatcha Riyadh

We started with non-alcoholic spirit-based cocktails, the Gin Mule and Yauatcha Whiskey Sour which were refreshingly perfect for the summer followed by steaming hot dim sum, the Venison Puff, filled with tender and tasty pulled venison meat enclosed in a soft and light puff pastry, and the newly-added Golden Squash Dumplings, which instantly reminded us of Hong Kong street food, a vegan dumpling filled with squash and mushrooms wrapped in golden dumpling skins naturally colored with squash extracts. For every Yauatcha experience, a plate of Crispy Duck Salad should not be missed. The crispy-fried duck, which was braised for three hours, lay underneath a bed of fresh greens, juicy pomelo and pomegranate, giving a hearty flavor when combined and captivating our taste buds. As for the main course, Chef Wayne enthusiastically recommended some of the fresh additions from the menu which he brought along with him. The Crispy Prawn with Cashew are mouth-watering coated prawns deep-fried to perfection making each piece crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The Mala Roasted Chicken is a plate of half-portion boneless roasted chicken glistening through the dimly lit restaurant with luscious mala sauce on the side topped with sprinkled shallot shreds. For extra enticement, make sure each bite of the chicken comes with the sauce. Aside from the two new additions, Chef Wayne suggested the Singapore Vermicelli using his own recipe. Amazing how

food can transport your senses to a different place as this dish did not just instantly bring us to the Singapore hawker centers, but also showed a clear reflection of the hands-on working experience of Chef Wayne in Singapore. Finally, for dessert, another new addition from the menu was the perfectly-balanced Strawberry and Lychee Slice. The cake slice, layered with matcha sponge, strawberry and lychee mousse, is served with a scoop of passionfruit sorbet on the side blends flawlessly and effortlessly cleansed our palates. It was an unparalleled dinner and we will certainly be back for more. We are also interested to try their set named “Jade,” specially made for discerning, vegan diners. The set includes several dumplings made of golden squash, wild mushroom, and edamame truffle; Crispy Fried Okra, Salt and Pepper Golden Tofu, and Pak Choi. This set will definitely intrigue and satisfy the vegans of Riyadh. The combination of traditional and modernity is their distinct mark in the growing food industry. The goal of maintaining the perfect balance between an exceptional dining experience and their brand’s essence is what makes Yauatcha remain true to their word.

THE ART OF RELAXATION SALMA SIDDIQUA Here are six techniques to help you master the art of relaxation and why it’s so important! Is there an art to relaxation? My new year’s resolution is to stop playing “beat the clock”. Life is stressful. From post-pandemic worries of health and safety to balancing work and family, we have a lot on our plates. Even if you know relaxation is beneficial, too much time on life’s hamster wheel may have you wondering where to start. Let’s start with the big question: why can’t you stop thinking and just relax? While many talk the talk, few have been taught to walk the walk when it comes to relaxation. As a result, the need to be productive can feel constricting. That’s why quarantine measures may have felt as bizarre as pulling the emergency brake on a runaway train. This period has been eye opening for many. At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, people struggled with the idea of relaxation. They couldn’t wrap their minds around the concept of doing nothing or immersing themselves in hobbies that don’t require them to go out and be busy bees all the time.

54

How to teach yourself to relax? While relaxation means different things to different people, the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology of the Cleveland Clinic has published a blueprint for mastering the art of being zen. 1. Get rid of the guilt. Give yourself permission to relax. It’s necessary to recharge our batteries and we need to accept and do it. Recognize that relaxation is essential and not a guilty pleasure. 2. Practice makes perfect. Just like any skill you want to master, you need to practice relaxing. We usually attempt to move into relaxation mode when we are in a crisis - and then try to learn to relax in that moment. That’s like trying to learn to swim in the middle of a wave instead of in calm waters. If we practice relaxing when we are calm instead of revved up, we’ll get better at it and be able to transition into relaxation more easily.

MAY-JUN 2022 DQ LIVING MAGAZINE

COLUMN HEALTH 3. Learn how to control your breathing. Studies have shown that you can lower your heart rate by controlling your breathing as it moves your body into relaxation mode. Practice a technique called ‘the squeegee breath”: i. Close your eyes ii. Imagine a window squeegee at the top of your head iii. As you breathe out, imagine the squeegee pushing toxic thoughts and energy down to your toes and out your body, like dirty water at the bottom of a window. iv. Then, breathe in deeply and imagine positive thoughts coming in like fresh, clean water. v. Continue to breathe in and out. 4. Move out of your head and into your body. Changing physical sensations during moments of stress can help quiet anxious thoughts. Anything soothing to the body can help. It can be as simple as cocooning in a warm blanket or doing some mindful movements or exercises. Movements that release muscle tension are key such as the “ragdoll’ technique. Let your shoulders drop down like a ragdoll. People are often surprised at how much tension they’re carrying when they do that. 5. Use technology carefully. Technology can be a friend or a foe, depending on how you use it. We forget how to relax because we’re always plugged in, which re-emphasizes

that sense of constantly having to do something. So put your phone away, relax without technology and see how it feels. 6. Try some forest therapy. Forest therapy is simply getting outside into green space. Studies have shown it reduces blood pressure and boosts mood. Even if you can’t get outside, sitting next to a window and watching the chirping birds outside can help you unwind and relax. Most of all, discover what works for you! While hours of reality TV may help your friend unwind, it may put you on edge - and that’s normal. Take note of when you feel the most relaxed. Relaxing is so individual. It could be anything from looking out the window to exercising, joining a yoga class, going for spa and massage, volunteering or painting. Find what works best for you! Why relaxing is so important you say? A body under constant stress is like an engine that’s continuously being revved. It wears your body down making it more vulnerable. Relaxation is like shifting into a lower gear and cruising for a while, letting your body regenerate and recover. We recommend trying Yoga classes at DQ Core Social Wellness club by professional Yoga instructors and also, their phenomenal Core Spa which promises to facilitate a focused mind, a healthy body and a harmonious soul! 3 MUST-VISIT MUSEUMS IN SAUDI THE PINK TARHA Museums are not just places for “old things”; they’re a place where the past and present collide to form a place for ideas to thrive and for truth and meanings to flourish. Venture out of Riyadh and step back in time through these museums in Taif and Abha known for their huge collection of artifact and distinct characteristics.

1. Fatima Museum of Home Decoration and Women’s Clothes in Abha We took a risk when we decided to drop by the Fatima Museum of Home Decoration and Women’s Clothes last year. We did not know if it was open or if they were welcoming visitors already. We just went because from our online search, the museum building looked beautiful and its contents, unique. Ahhh, it was not only beautiful, it was also very well-organized, bright, and fragrant. This is a museum in Saudi Arabia you should not miss. Fatima Museum of Home Decoration and Women’s Clothes is a dream project of Fatima Faye Al-Almaai, a renowned artist in the field of Al-Qatt Al-Asiri (also the mother of our artist on spotlight, Alaa, on page 30). This museum was born from her passion for the folk art. It was her lifelong dream to preserve the heritage of the Asir region. We had the honor of meeting her in the museum after we saw the over 300 piec-

56

es of clothing, jewelry, paintings, and carvings featured. The place is elegant as the woman who owns it. After a showing of a video explaining the Asiri art and its contribution to Saudi culture, Fatima took us to her workroom, where her art workshops are held, to show how each “ink” is derived from raw natural materials. Her art, with its various hues, inscriptions, and forms, is very traditional and nostalgic yet also fun and colorful. Fatima and Al Qatt Al Asiri are truly inspiring.

Tamniah Archaeological Museum in Asir Region During our trip to the Asir region in December 2021, we went to Al Qaryah Village to see the Tamniah Archaeological Museum. We shrugged it off as another ordinary museum and didn’t expect much from it, especially when it looks small

from the outside. This museum exceeded our expectations! It was floor after floor, room after room of artifacts and settings that showed the social life and livelihood of the Kingdom’s ancestors. The Tamniah Archaeological Museum is owned by Abdul Hadi Ahmed Al Mahdi. The ground floor is where most of the collection of things are but once we went up the stairs, things turned really interesting. The museum is like a house that did not change with time. The house and halls are built according to the old heritage style of the Asir province and each room shows exactly how they looked like in the old days. It’s like being welcomed in the present but experiencing the past once you step into a room. Some rooms were very colorful like the huge living room. The bedroom had clothing and jewelry. The kitchen was filled with cooking pots, earthenware, water jugs, and utensils. The Tamnia Museum is a maze. We believe you can get lost in there and truly, travel back in time.

⏰ 8:00 AM -12:00 PM / 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM 🎟 SR 20 📍 https://goo.gl/maps/ma3qJK79uvVwfYvb8 3. Al-Shareef Museum in Taif Taif is a must-visit place in Saudi Arabia especially during summer. The cool weather and the blossoming of roses during the second quarter of the year makes Taif an ideal destination for all. This is the reason why we chose Taif as

our first out-of-Riyadh trip when travel restrictions due to Covid-19 were eased in 2021. We wanted to get to know Taif and see one of its crowning glory: the privately-owned Al-Shareef Museum famous for being a one-stop-building for everything history, culture and tradition. The Al-Shareef Museum has a collection of artifacts collected by the owner from his over 30 years of wandering the Kingdom. An hour was not enough to see and peruse everything in their glass displays, shelves, and racks. Our favorite part of the museum is the “marketplace” that depicts men and their crafts from decades ago. From carpenters to barbers to tailors, to food sellers and more, each industry is represented. We like the traditional folk costumes, tools, settings, and projects in each booth. The museum also has a space for vintage cars. We spent a few minutes taking a break in its lanai too. The mini fountain and the colored glass took out some of our tiredness from an afternoon of touring and we were back on the road in no time. More on the museum from DQ Living’s archive: http://dqliving.com/a-visit-to-the-past/

⏰ 4:00 PM - 12:00 AM 🎟 SR 20 📍 https://goo.gl/maps/BKAzZVM3VQ3W8dq37 Truly, Saudi Arabia has transformed time into space through their many museums scattered all over the Kingdom.

ROYAL NORWEGIAN EMBASSY CELEBRATES NORWAY NATIONAL DAY ALEXANDER WOODMAN The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway, H.E. Thomas Lid Ball, and Mrs. Camilla Unger hosted a reception at the Royal Norwegian Embassy on the National Day of Norway. Since 1814, May 17 has been celebrated to pay tribute to the Norwegian Constitution, one of the oldest in the world, which marked the beginning of a modern, sovereign, and democratic Norway. The reception was a fascinating blend of an opulent environment, delicious food imported from Norway, and a serene ambiance. Ambassador Lid Ball welcomed guests and the Norwegians in Saudi Arabia, stating that the growing number of Norwegians in the Kingdom helps to maintain and build a wide and strong network of friends and partners. In his persuasive speech, H.E. Lid Ball praised the longstanding bilateral relations with Saudi Arabia and expressed interest to further relations in the years to come, "I know that I have a joint ambition with Her Excellency Amal Al Moallimi, who is doing a great job as Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Norway." One of Norway's key activities in Saudi Arabia is the green transition through a commitment to cut emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by making energy production greener through new technologies, investing in renewables, protecting marine resources, and other initiatives. "We must accelerate our efforts. People in the Middle East, maybe more than anywhere else, already

feel the impact of Climate Change. I believe the public awareness will only increase as the next two Climate Summits are taking place in this region," reasoned the Ambassador. The Ambassador further reflected on the business community and industries across many sectors as key players in bringing forward the technologies, the knowhow, and capacity required to implement the green transition. As an example of sustainable business models, H.E. Lid Ball cited the sponsors of the celebration, Jotun, CNTXT, Interwell, DNV, and Bravo Seafood, who have the expertise, capital, and commitment to sustainability. In his closing remarks, Ambassador Lid Ball honored the Royal Norwegian Family and read the message from the King of Norway. H.E. Ambassador Lid Ball expressed his gratitude to HH Prince Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf, diplomats, representatives of foreign missions, and guests. "I thank you all for joining us to celebrate Norway's birth as a nation-state, as well as the enduring friendship between the two Kingdoms. Norway enjoys excellent relations with the Kingdom, as we have done since they were officially established back in 1961. I would like to underline that we greatly appreciate our longstanding bilateral relations,” concluded H.E. Thomas Lid Ball.

EUROPEAN UNION CELEBRATES EUROPE MONTH ALEXANDER WOODMAN On May 18, 2022, the Embassy of the European Union (EU) in Saudi Arabia hosted an official Europe Day reception. This year’s celebration had a particular significance as Europe Month in Saudi Arabia kicked off on May 9, offering a range of activities for Saudis and visitors to the Kingdom to enjoy European culture, as well as learn more about the EU and its Member States. The Europe Month included events such as music concerts, art exhibitions, film festivals and unprecedented participation of EU embassy in International Conference on Education in Riyadh. The events were organized by the EU Delegation and the embassies of the EU Member States. Indeed, May 18 has become a historic day in the diplomatic relations of the EU and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), as the High Representative and the European Commission adopted a Joint Communication on a “Strategic Partnership with the Gulf” with the aim to broaden and deepen the EU's cooperation with the GCC and its member countries. This partnership is beneficial both for the EU and GCC, with the EU being the world's largest single market, a leader in research and innovation, an important security actor in the Gulf region and the leading actor on global challenges such

as climate change and digitalization. In turn, GCC countries are dynamic economies and an important gateway between Europe, Asia and Africa. Increased cooperation and exchanges between the EU and GCC countries will ultimately be beneficial also for the people of both regions, improving mutual understanding and trust. In his statement, High Representative of the EU, Josep Borrell, said: “We need to work more closely together on stability in the Gulf and the Middle East, on global security threats; energy security, climate change and the green transition, digitalization, trade and investment. We also need to strengthen contacts between students, researchers, businesses and citizens.” As the announcement of the partnership coincided with the celebration of Europe Month in Saudi Arabia, in his elaborative speech, H.E. EU Ambassador Patrick Simonnet expressed his delight in celebrating this historic achievement. “This partnership will take us to a higher level of political coordination; an enhanced cooperation on our respective economic strategies namely the European Green Deal and the Saudi Vision 2030; a deeper engagement on regional security matters; better ways to boost our thriving economic and trade relations; most importantly a new vision on shared renewable energies between Europe and the Gulf,” reasoned H.E. Simonnet.

The celebration of Europe Month in the Kingdom became a unique opportunity to share cultural experiences and encourage exchanges between Europe and the Kingdom to improve mutual understanding and strengthen the ties supported through the "Strategic Partnership with the Gulf," a promising initiative for new horizons of cooperation.
