VFS Global enjoys a strong partnership with the Government of Saudi Arabia and works closely with the authorities to ensure compliance with all the local laws and guidelines. Our organisation strongly supports the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud’s Saudi Vision 2030, and have taken proactive initiatives in the following areas:
vices and solutions to enhance the customer experience. The introduction of biometric enrolment capabilities and doorstep visa services were real game-changers for us. The growing demand for DIY technologies led to us introducing eVisa services. Most importantly, highest data security standards are fully embedded within the design and functioning of our processes. Data Protection and Information Security are two separate business-critical functions at VFS Global. Over the years, we have invested significant resources in building these functions with very robust systems and controls. What are the benefits for client governments? The transformational advantages we offer for client governments are the ability to ramp up visa, passport and consular application processing volume multifold without any additional office space or additional staff cost, and importantly while maintaining the highest levels of security. Our business model is built on a user pay basis, so most of the outsourcing comes at zero cost to the client governments while adding significant revenue, cost and process improvement efficiencies. What are VFS Global’s plans for the next five years? With Blackstone, one of the world’s largest alternative asset managers, becoming the majority shareholder of VFS Global, the coming five years will witness renewed growth impetus at our company. We believe that the worst of the pandemic is behind us and that the general recovery trend will only strengthen, albeit with some volatility.
• Saudization – We employ 65% locals in KSA, who bring in the on-ground expertise imperative to our business excellence. • Women Empowerment – 40% of our Operations staff in KSA are women employees. In fact, our Visa At Your Doorstep team in Riyadh is operated by an all-female staff, a global first for VFS Global! We are also focused on training our Saudi colleagues on international best practices and providing opportunities to work in our offices across the world.
Our focus will be on further strengthening and consolidating our position in our core business of outsourced visa services while simultaneously focusing on diversification opportunities in high growth potential businesses such as outsourced Passport & Consular services and eVisa services. We also see more governments integrating biometric enrollment in their visa application process to further increase the security of the process. We are ready to support them with multiple biometric solutions to meet their requirements.
What is VFS Global’s role in the visa, passport, and consular services application process? We handle the non-judgmental and administrative part of the application process, including appointment booking, biometric enrolment, form checking, data entry, fee collection, and courier pass back of documents to the visa applicants, leaving the critical task of decision-making to be managed by the Embassies/Consulates.

Helping Saudi Arabia in achieving its Vision 2030 is an organization that is responsible for developing community sports works that are geared towards a #HealthyActiveCommunity – this is the Saudi Sports for All Federation.
In 2018, the Saudi Sports for All Federation (SFA) was created to serve as a driving force for community sports in the country. Its mission is to “build a healthy and vibrant community by inspiring all members of society to be physically active. They deliver this by creating inclusive recreational and sustainable programs.” True to their mission, they are working on a national sports strategy which is participant-focused and encompasses every stage of life: from youth (under 18) and young adults (1825) where they focus on promoting physical activities inside
8
and outside their schools and universities, to adults (26-50) where they encourage physical activity at work and support community and home programs, and the older adults (50+) where they promote the health benefits of physical activity and provide suitable programs for them. One of the strategies of SFA in achieving their goals is the Community Sports Groups (CSG) which are groups with 5 or more members that engage in physical activity on a regular basis. SFA encourages groups to register so they could be supported by the federation through securing access to a

COVER wide range of facilities, providing guidance and best practices on how to organize events, helping in recruiting volunteers, and launching campaigns to promote CSGs and their activities. In Saudi Arabia, the top sports for CSGs are walking, running, hiking, cycling, and football. With their commitment to promote a healthy and active lifestyle for people regardless of their age and fitness levels, the SFA launched the Saudi Sports for All app where members could participate in community, group, and individual sports, as well as monitor and manage their personal health. Since their inception five years ago, SFA has already led many activities and events, and partnered with different organizations to drive community sports in the Kingdom. This 2022, some of the remarkable events were the SFA Sandclash 2022 Fitness Competition on February 4th and 5th which was designed to challenge athletes and was packed with competition, entertainment, classes, seminars, and vendors around the world. Also in February, the Lifestyle Enhancement Conference was held which host local and international experts that provide evidence-based solutions to guide the participants to the ideal lifestyle. In March, the second edition of the Riyadh Marathon was held which attracted over 10,000 participants from across KSA regions and the globe, and also the second of the Ecotrail was back which was the first time ever that an ultramarathon trail passed through AlUla — Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In July, the General Authority for Statistics Findings showed that “48.2% of Saudi nationals and residents now practice sports on a weekly basis” which is a testament to the positive impact of the extensive range of fitness-focused facilities, events, and initiatives that were launched by the SFA, together with the Ministry of Sports, Quality of Life, and the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee. With all the accomplishments that they had since they started last 2018, the SFA’s target of raising physical activity levels in the country to 40% by 2030 is well on its way.

The Saudi Sports for All Federation (SFA) is geared up to launch the second edition of its Summer Camps Program. Registration was opened for kids ages 6-18, in where the camps offer a variety of activities for youth to engage in during their summer vacation, centred around sports, entertainment, education, and the development of life skills. Starting on July 17th, boys and girls across different cities excitedly began participating in the Summer Camps Program, held Sundays through Thursdays between 5 PM and 10 PM. The program is a part of SFA’s ongoing Neighbourhood Clubs Program, which was launched in January of this year to provide an assortment of events and challenges catered towards all ages and physical fitness levels. The Summer Camps Program will utilize the facilities of schools and

community centres for the camp’s proceedings, held within thirteen locations and across eleven cities. In collaboration with the Ministry of Sport, Ministry of Education, and other participating Federations, SFA’s Summer Camps Program will provide a fun and educational environment that keeps youth active and excited to participate. In addition to gracious support from the public sector, last year’s edition of the Summer Camps saw the SFA collaborate with eight private sector entities in Riyadh, Jeddah, and the Eastern Province to keep kids active during the summer months. Throughout the program, campers will be able to try their hand at sports like football, basketball, martial arts, volley-

These weekly skill development workshops will be overseen and assisted by coaches and experts from different sector entities, including the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Saudi Red Crescent Authority, and a number of Private Sector Health Providers.
Parents and guardians signed their summer campers up through the Sports for All Neighbourhood Club’s website. Summer camps are now fully booked.
At the conclusion of the summer camp on August 18th, an end of camp celebration will be held, with a slideshow recapping the summer’s moments, a certificate for all participants showcasing what campers learned throughout the summer and a bazaar, inviting small family businesses in the community to participate. In efforts to make the camps as accessible as possible, more than 3000 spots are open for boys and girls within the King-

This unifies urban structures and stimulates investment and real estate elements as per standards. The Design Code for the Sports Boulevard is a reference for all current and potential commercial and residential property owners, devel-

PRECIOUS PERU JOSELYN TELLO
With a millenary history and culture, an exceptional gastronomy, a flora and fauna that makes it one of the four most megadiverse countries in the planet, dreamlike landscapes, and a friendly and hospitable population, Peru is, without a doubt, one of the most fascinating destinations to visit.

GO Located along the west coast of the American continent, Peru is the third largest country in South America and the only one whose capital, Lima, faces the Pacific Ocean. Peru is defined as a mestizo country in which, over the centuries, a variety of cultures and traditions have converged, giving it a unique and multiethnic face. In its diverse cultural, architectural, artistic, and gastronomic manifestations, one can perceive the gravitation of the country's original cultures, as well as those of Europe, Africa, Asia, and even the influence of the Arab people. Considered one of the six cradles of civilization, Peru is home to 13 sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List, of which three of the most famous are the enigmatic Nazca and Pampas de Ju-
mana lines and geoglyphs, the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu, and Manu National Park, each located in one of the country's three main geographic areas: the coast, the highlands, and the jungle, respectively. Peru is a country that invites you to get to know it and offers an infinite range of possibilities. There is a Peru for every visitor. For those interested in the biodiversity of the Amazon and ecology; cultural tourism in cities that show at the same time pre-Hispanic and colonial vestiges; those who want to taste its exquisite gastronomy, which has made Peru to be considered one of the best culinary destinations in the world; those who want to practice adventure tourism by walking the Inca Trail or climbing

its highest and most impressive peaks such as Huascaran (Ancash) or Coropuna (Arequipa); or simply for those who seek to discover a hidden treasure. Peru also dishes out some of the tastiest and most flavorful cuisine. For starters, the ceviche, cooked fish served cold with lime juice, onion, salt, and hot chillies called “aji” is a must-try. The Papa A La Huancaina, sliced golden potatoes with a creamy sauce of yellow chili, fresh cheese, evaporated milk, and eggs, is often served as an appetizer. On the other hand, Causa Iimeña uses yellow Peruvian potatoes which are filled with chicken, or any meat nowadays, blended with mayonnaise. The Lomo Saltado, tender strips of marinated beef, and Pollo A La Brasa, marinated chicken roasted over hardwood, are mains you should not miss. Their exotic flavors will leave you wanting for more. The country has won the “World’s Culinary Destination 2021” at the prestigious World Travel Awards 2021. Once again, Peru occupies positions in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants with Central Restaurant coming in second place and Maido Restaurant on the 11th position.

Bilateral Relations On June 1st, the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Embassy of Peru in Saudi Arabia was celebrated. However, diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on March 19, 1986. The Saudi government inaugurated its embassy in Lima on June 27, 2013. Over the years, the bilateral relationship has grown closer, as have the ties of friendship and cooperation between its people. In 2015, the chairman of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage, made a working visit to Peru, on which occasion a memorandum of understanding was signed on cooperation in the fields of cultural heritage, museums, built heritage, and traditional industries. The same year, the President of the Council of Ministers of Peru traveled to Riyadh to participate in the IV ASPA Summit (Summit of South American Arab Countries) held in Riyadh. On February 17, 2022, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia and a member of the Council of Ministers, Adel Al Jubeir, visited Peru, being the first visit by a Saudi minister at the bilateral level. As of November 2021, bilateral trade amounted to US$ 164.78 million. There are investment opportunities in infrastructure, agro-exports and the energy sector, and a shared interest in developing and strengthening cooperative relations between the two countries to serve the common interest.

WHERE TO GO Visit one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, Machu Picchu, chosen as the “world’s leading tourist attraction” and declared as a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. It includes temples, private quarters, and ceremonial platforms. Separating Peru and Bolivia, Lake Titicaca is a geological wonder in the high plain Altiplano region with a semi-arid climate. Taquile, Amantani, and the floating Uros islands offer the opportunity to experience the traditions and customs of communities and live in harmony with nature. World-famous epicenter of biodiversity, Manu National Park, is where the Tropical Andes and the Amazon Basin in Southwestern Peru meets. It’s home to more than 4,000 animal species and 20,000 different plants. Marvel at the contrast between modern buildings and more traditional architecture, including colonial influences in Lima, Peru’s capital. Visit Plaza de Armas, a historical center and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover Cusco, the “archaeological capital of the Americas”. This is the second assignment of the Ambassador to the Kingdom since 2015. A career diplomat, H.E. Lopez represented Peru in Hungary, the USA, New Zealand, Ecuador, and Venezuela. Ambassador Carlos Rodolfo Zapata Lopez is awarded the Order of Merit in the Diplomatic Service of Peru Jose Gregorio Paz Soldan in the grade of "Red Cross." Please discuss the achievements of Saudi-Peruvian diplomatic relations since 1986. How do you see partnership perspectives in the short and long term? Since the establishment of our embassies in 2013, we have been working very solid to create the best conditions through cooperation agreements in order to promote com-

mercial and cultural exchange and investment in a framework of friendship and mutual benefit. While the two countries have achieved fruitful cooperation in the field of food and agricultural imports, negotiations are underway on a general cooperation agreement, an air service agreement and disaster risk management. I believe that these agreements will open up new opportunities for bilateral trade and investment, as well as deepen people-to-people relations. This is your second assignment in the Kingdom. Please, discuss the changes you have witnessed after arrival for the second time. How do you envision your role at this time?
JUL-AUG 2022 DQ LIVING MAGAZINE
Perhaps one of the most pleasant moments as a diplomat is to have the ability to look back at the country where you served and be able to assess the changes. Saudi Arabia is like an extraordinary gem that needs to be polished, beautified, and presented to the world. During my first assignment period, I explored and discovered the Saudis' unique nature and devotion to tradition, ancient history, and art. It was a unique experience that deeply impressed me. Now, as I have arrived for the second time, I have had the opportunity to appreciate that the Vision 2030 of the Kingdom is influencing changes in Saudi society. Vision 2030 is a roadmap to the future of this already prosperous country. This is a great opportunity to change the vision of the world community toward this country, promote strategic investment in new industries through wise leadership, and show the world the rich legacy, culture, and generosity of Saudi Arabia. Most importantly, this is a special endeavour, especially offering opportunities to youth, one of the Kingdom's greatest assets, who will reach the goals of Vision 2030 and take them to a new level of excellence. On the subject of Vision 2030, how do you envision the bilateral collaboration in this initiative? Vision 2030 opens up important fields for cooperation in different areas of interest to both countries. This will create the environment and conditions for expanding cooperation between the public and private sectors of the two countries, leading to the creation of a multisectoral network. I believe such cooperation between Peru and Saudi Arabia will remarkably transform the diplomatic, trade, and political fields, leading to sustainable and long-term synergy.
You hold the Order of Merit in the Diplomatic Service of Peru Jose Gregorio Paz Soldan. In addition to honor, how does this order increase a diplomat's responsibility? It is a decoration awarded for diplomatic and foreign policy services rendered to the country. For us Peruvian diplomats, it is a recognition of the achievements during the diplomatic career, which commits us to continue representing and promoting the interests of our people and country. Furthermore, this award has encouraged me as a strong and resilient professional to continue to create, maintain, and, if required, repair relationships between my nation and the countries I serve. That is why I consider this award an honor that inspires me to grow as an envoy and develop both bilateral and multilateral diplomacy in the countries where I serve. A career diplomat, you have served in Hungry, the USA, New Zealand, Ecuador, and Venezuela. How has the concept of diplomacy changed since you started your vocation? International relations are undergoing fundamental changes at an unprecedented pace, affecting the diplomacy we have known for the past century. Technological development, digitalization, and the number of domestic and international actors whose activities are related to diplomacy are increasing, and the public is becoming more sensitive to foreign policy issues. Nevertheless, the main challenge is that diplomacy serves to achieve the development of countries and stability in the world. Therefore, remaining true to the core values of diplomacy, I have striven to strengthen Peru's bilateral ties with foreign states and peoples over the years of my service. I view diplomacy as a discipline through which I try to support my country, encourage multilateral cooperation, and maintain peace.

H.E. AMEER KHURRAM RATHORE AMBASSADOR OF PAKISTAN ALEXANDER WOODMAN In 2022, H.E. Ameer Khurram Rathore was appointed as the Ambassador of Pakistan to Saudi Arabia. In his previous assignment, H.E. Rathore served as the High Commissioner of Pakistan to Canada. In addition, the Ambassador served in Germany, Thailand, Malaysia, the UAE, and Egypt as a career diplomat. Please reflect on the most remarkable achievements of Saudi-Pakistan diplomatic relations for the past five years. Pakistan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia share a unique bond. Our strong fraternal ties are rooted deeply in shared history, values, culture, mutual respect, and love for each other. The last five years have seen continued vigor and
28
commitment from both sides to take this relationship to new heights. The Kingdom has ushered in a new era of progress and prosperity under the transformative leadership of HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Vision 2030 has opened new economic, political, and cultural growth opportunities for the Kingdom and the regional partners. In turn, Pakistan has become an attractive destination for investment and business owing to the reforms and implementation of China's Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects. We have, resultantly, identified several complementarities in the fields of culture, entertainment, business, and environment, to name just a few.
JUL-AUG 2022 DQ LIVING MAGAZINE
DISCOURSE The establishment of the Saudi Pakistan Supreme Coordination Council (SPSCC) is, therefore, a significant achievement. SPSCC provides an elaborate mechanism for bilateral cooperation from the top to the grass-root level in fields as diverse as sports, trade and investment, renewable energy, food security, and Information Technology (IT). Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have signed several agreements in the last five years. We have signed more Agreements in the last five years than in the last six decades. The Kingdom is in the process of economic diversification and transformation. What are the priorities of economic diplomacy of two countries in this transformation? At the very heart of any economic diversification, plan lies innovation. We are pleased to witness the Kingdom’s drive towards innovation and its resultant dividends in the form of increased growth, particularly in the non-oil sectors. Global supply chain disruptions due to COVID-19 were a wake-up call for the world to rethink trade policies and patterns. More recently, the geo-political flux has again challenged traditional trading methods. However, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia complement each other in various economic sectors with a priority to develop a value chain, mutually beneficial for both countries. There is great potential to broaden our trade ties beyond the traditional commodities. Together, we are exploring new areas for economic cooperation. For example, Pakistan offers great incentives to Saudi companies for investment and business. We have identified key priority sectors for these investments and are working relentlessly to develop strong public and private partnerships in these sectors. One of the main goals of vision 2030 is to make Saudi Arabia a leading tourism destination. What makes Saudi Arabia an attractive destination for Pakistanis? Why should Saudis visit Pakistan? Saudi Arabia is already one of the most attractive destinations for Pakistanis as the Kingdom enjoys the unique privilege of the custodianship of the Two Holy Mosques. We are grateful to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques for caring for the Pakistanis. Visiting the holy cities of Mecca and Medina is a lifelong dream for every Pakistani. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the leadership of the Kingdom on their return to the annual Hajj, as before COVID-19. Reflecting on tourism as such, tourism activity in the Kingdom has increased dramatically. From rich heritage sites in Al-Ula to extravagant beaches, the Kingdom should be a promising tourist destination in the region. I am sure Pakistanis would love to explore Saudi Arabia for these amazing places as they learn about these opportunities. As for Pakistan, the landscape of Pakistan offers a unique experience for Saudi visitors with some of the highest
mountains, meadows, scenic lakes, great rivers, distinctive flora and fauna, and historical sites. Indus Valley, one of the oldest civilizations with its archaeological sites, can be visited in Sindh and Punjab. Each province offers unique cuisine, music, and culture. Sustainable tourism is an area, which has seen many investments in Pakistan, and we hope that more footfall in the country will further enhance the services available for tourists. As a career diplomat, how does one country’s experience, culture, and traditions influence future diplomatic appointments and professional performance as a diplomat? Each assignment is a journey that enriches our lives. I have been lucky to represent Pakistan in various countries, absorb the culture and people of each society, and learn about the vitality and resilience of human will. I believe all these places have added something to my personality and have equipped me with the knowledge to perform better. The world has become incredibly interconnected today, enabling one to experience all cultures in some way. However, nothing truly replaces the experience of living in a place and experiencing its climate, culture, traditions, language, food, and history. Diplomatic assignments give one sufficient time to find bearings, make connections, fall in love with a place, and when the time comes, gracefully say farewell. How do you see your contribution to taking Saudi-Pakistani relations to the next level? Every Ambassador aspires to take forward the relationship between his/her country and the country of accreditation. It is a matter of great honor and privilege for me to represent Pakistan in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at such a wonderful time when the region and the Kingdom are transforming rapidly. Of all the areas identified for bilateral cooperation, economic collaboration is where I am keen to play an effective role. Likewise, tourism, sports, and cultural cooperation are important for enhancing people-to-people linkages. I am quite hopeful that during my time in the Kingdom, I will be able to contribute significantly toward such cooperation. What will be your remarks on the concept of the DQ in the advancement of intercultural cooperation? The DQ provides a comforting backdrop to our otherwise busy work lives. DQ’s environment and infrastructure enable the diplomats to regularly meet each other and organize wonderful formal and informal gatherings. In March, we celebrated our National Day at the beautiful Cultural Palace, a great asset for the DQ. Similarly, its parks and public squares are among the best in the Kingdom. It is a great privilege to be living in such a beautiful setting. Note: For an overview of tourism in Pakistan, visit Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation http://tourism.gov.pk/ pakistan.html

H.E. ULUKBEK MARIPOV AMBASSADOR OF KYRGYZ REPUBLIC ALEXANDER WOODMAN Please reflect on the main achievements of two countries in these three decades. What were the challenges? I would like to note with pleasure that this year we are celebrating 30 years of establishing diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and the Kyrgyz Republic. An example of peace, mutual support, and cooperation based on the principles of mutual respect, a sense of strong friendship, deep solidarity, spiritual and cultural values of our fraternal peoples. In general, relations between our friendly countries have a fairly solid foundation for further development and strengthening. Political cooperation is characterized by the absence of disagreements and has recently been "gaining momen-

tum," with the first official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, HRH Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud to the Kyrgyz Republic. A landmark and bright event in our country's foreign policy became an additional impetus to the development of bilateral relations. During the visit, HRH Prince Faisal was received by His Excellency Sadyr Zhaparov, the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, and he also met with His Excellency Akylbek Zhaparov, the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers. The Kyrgyz Republic has a firm intention to develop consistent and mutually beneficial cooperation with Saudi Arabia in the political, inter-parliamentary, trade, economic, investment, cultural, and humanitarian spheres, as well as

been established for Saudi visitors, and up to 8,000 Saudi tourists visit Kyrgyzstan annually.
Investments play an important role in enhancing trade cooperation. Why should Saudi entrepreneurs invest in Kyrgyzstan? The Kyrgyz Republic has great potential in trade, industry, agriculture, investment, joint ventures, energy, green economy, healthcare, education, and tourism, which is attractive in terms of investment cooperation. Although the trade turnover between our countries is still insignificant, which is associated with problems in the logistics of delivering goods, we have opportunities for its development and increase. Creating favorable conditions for doing business and protecting foreign investors' interests is one of the priorities of the leadership of the Kyrgyz Republic. Thus, one of the first decrees signed by the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, H.E. S. Zhaparov, was the Decree "On Support for Property, Entrepreneurs and Investors," aimed at stimulating sustainable economic growth.
Tourism is one of the priority sectors of the economy of the Kyrgyz Republic, with rich natural, recreational and ecological potential. Kyrgyzstan houses famous mountain peaks such as Pobeda, Lenin, Khan Tengri, one of the longest glaciers, Enylchek, and a pearl of nature - Lake Issyk-Kul. In addition, there are dozens of resorts and recreational areas, mountain tourism and climbing areas, large reserves of therapeutic mud, a wealth of mineral and thermal springs, ecologically clean and almost untouched by civilization landscapes. The country is rich in historical past; the Great Silk Road passed through it, in addition to more than five thousand monuments of history and culture.
In terms of bilateral trade and investment, to support small and medium-sized businesses, the first Kyrgyz-Saudi Business Forum was held in Riyadh in February 2022. As a result, several commercial agreements were signed between the two countries' business circles. The next forum is planned to be held in Kyrgyzstan, and the issue of holding the third meeting of the Kyrgyz-Saudi Joint Intergovernmental Committee on High-Level Cooperation in Riyadh is also being considered. One of the main goals of Saudi Vision 2030 is an oil-diversified economy. Apart from oil, what would you consider as a strong asset of Saudi Arabia? First, I would call the Saudis, their sons, and daughters the most valuable wealth of the Kingdom, the strongest asset of Saudi Arabia. Secondly, Saudi Arabia is the land of two holy mosques, thanks to which the Kingdom is located in the heart of the Arab and Islamic world. Third, Saudi Arabia uses its investment power to create a more diverse and sustainable economy. Last but not least, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has its strategic position to become an integral engine of international trade and connect three continents: Africa, Asia, and Europe. In 2021, the Embassy organized a number of events to introduce local community with Kyrgyz history, culture, and traditions. What makes Kyrgyzstan an attractive tourism destination in general, and for Saudis in particular? The tourism sector appears very attractive for strengthening the cooperation potential. Thus, since February 2022, for the first time in history, direct charter flights have been opened between the two countries on the Bishkek-Jeddah-Bishkek, Osh-Jeddah-Osh, Bishkek-Medina-Bishkek, and Osh-Medina-Osh routes. In the near future, we expect the opening of direct flights that will connect the two friendly countries. Moreover, a 60-day visa-free regime has
As an ambassador, how do you see your contribution in strengthening bilateral ties, given your extensive professional experience, including the position of the Prime Minister? During my diplomatic mission, I will make every effort to implement the tasks assigned to me by the President of the Kyrgyz Republic to expand and deepen relations between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in various fields. I have all the conditions to meet and negotiate with the authorities of Saudi Arabia directly and solve the tasks assigned to me. In addition, extensive professional experience, including as Prime Minister and Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, also helps in my diplomatic activities, as I am personally and directly familiar with the problems and opportunities of our country's entire complex of socio-economic development. The Diplomatic Quarter hosts most of the embassies and foreign missions in the Kingdom. How can the DQ concept contribute to the development of multilateral diplomacy within the KSA? The Diplomatic Quarter is an unconditional manifestation of Saudi Arabia's deep respect for diplomats and their families, for whom all favorable conditions have been created for ease of work, security, and life. Furthermore, the DQ concept plays an important role in developing multilateral diplomacy in Saudi Arabia, promoting interethnic and intercultural communication. Cultural events within the framework of DQ allow us to get to know each other, communicate, and exchange views in an informal setting, including on international politics. One such event took place on March 5, when the Embassies of the Turkic-speaking states of Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan jointly organized the Spring Festival 2022, dedicated to the spring equinox - "Nooruz," which means "New Day." Residents of the DQ, foreign diplomats, and guests of the festival were introduced to the rich history, authentic culture, traditions, and customs of the peoples of Central Asia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan.

The summer season is in full swing and many have gone out of the Kingdom to enjoy their time in other countries. For those of us left in Riyadh, the city has an abundance of fantastic places to visit that can also entertain your children. Here are just a few delightful places where you can spend a day strolling around, doing some crafts, meeting pets, or just learning more fascinating details about this place we all call home.
THE AIRCRAFT MUSEUM Eastern Ring Road, King Abdullah District One of the largest museums in Riyadh, the Saqer-Aljazirah Royal Saudi Air Force Aviation Museum presents the history of the Air Force from its inception in the 1920s to the present day. It consists of an outdoor park as well as the indoor exhibition centre where you can browse the military memorabilia or watch a 3D show to help you understand the science behind aircraft engineering. There are several aircrafts on show- airliners, helicopters, and a number of special military planes as well as airplane weapons exhibit. For kids, there are a few planes they can climb into, cockpit simulators, and entertainment areas. You can easily spend a couple of hours there and it is a place the children will talk about for days after.
WOODY PARK Al Tayer Street What makes Woody Park unforgettable is their bird aviary — it is an experience that will stay with you forever. The small aviary caters to only a few visitors at a time and the guests are requested to be silent as possible during the encounter. One holds out the bird seeds and you are left in awe as flocks of little timid birds come to feed, gently swooping to land on your hand, an arm, and even your head. The Park also offers a goat and sheep feeding area (milk bottles provided). There is a shaded food area or a private majlis for the families as well as an indoor arts and crafts area where the kids can do painting or sand bottle art to take home.

READ FICTION
Atonement, by Ian McEwan
The Thursday Murder Club, by Richard Osman
A British classic and book club favourite, McEwan’s rich descriptions characterize his masterful writing. Two-thirds of the book take place in the course of a single summer evening, during which a series of tragic misunderstandings set in motion the final third of the book, in which the main character tries to atone for the mistakes she made during that evening. It has also been made into a film, starring Keira Knightley and James McEvoy.
A humorously-written murder mystery set in a quintessential English village – but the erstwhile detectives are not your classic, troubled, unorthodox types with something to prove, but rather a motley collection of pensioners! As the mystery develops and unfolds, it is revealed that everyone, no matter how innocent-looking, has a secret. Film rights to the book have been bought by Steven Spielberg – so look out for the movie adaptation!
Conclave, by Robert Harris This un-put-downable political thriller with a mind-blowing twist in the unlikely setting of a papal election will have you glued to your deckchair. This is a personal favourite which I have loaned to several friends and family members – all have agreed with me that they loved it. Robert Harris is a consummate writer and reliable bet for a satisfying holiday read.
Stories of Your Life and Others, by Ted Chiang
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, by Mary Ann Schaffer and Annie Barrows
These artfully crafted sci-fi short stories push the imaginative boundaries of both humanity and science. I can guarantee you will be thinking about them for days on end. One of these short stories was the inspiration for the Hollywood movie Arrival, starring Amy Adams.
A charming romance novel that revolves around a book club set up during the Nazi occupation of Guernsey, one of the British Channel Islands, and how they survived and resisted their occupiers. The book has also been made into a Netflix film, starring Lily James.

Operation Mincemeat, by Ben Macintyre
This is Going to Hurt, by Adam Kay
The Hare with Amber Eyes, by Edmund de Waal
Ben Macintyre is the undisputed champion of true-story spy thrillers. This book is no exception. Operation Mincemeat is the tale of a complex and risky plot developed by the British to deceive the Nazis about their upcoming battle plans. The plot involved several love letters, a dead body and a series of Spanish double agents. The incredible tale has been made into a major film, which came out in cinemas in 2022, starring Colin Firth and Matthew MacFayden.
An amusing, relatable and honest account of the author’s personal experience as a junior doctor in the UK’s National Health Service. Although the author’s natural witty and light style makes the topic funny and accessible, he also uses the opportunity to drive some home truths about the challenges involved in working on a medical front line. The book has been adapted into a BBC series, starring Ben Whishaw.
When the British-Dutch artist Edmund de Waal inherits a collection of Japanese netsuke, he embarks on a personal quest to trace their journey through his family history. Writer and reader follow these tiny, enigmatic works of art as they travel through his family from 17th-century Japan to 18th-century Odessa to 19th-century Paris to 20th-century Vienna, where the reader is simultaneously heartbroken and inspired by their miraculous survival of the Holocaust.
Invisible Women, by Caroline Criado Perez An essential read for the 21st century. This book takes an indisputable data-driven approach to gender inequality, highlighting the discrimination and bias built into almost every single system upon which we rely for the daily running of our lives. The book is very well written and highly readable, while keeping a data- and science-based approach at its heart.
How I Accidentally Became a Global Stock Photo: and Other Strange and Wonderful Stories, by Shubnum Khan A series of personal anecdotes that revolve around travel, culture, and adventure. The ideal summer read if you’re planning a staycation, as these stories allow you to roam the world with their author from the comfort of your couch!

How can a project management professional by day and an aspiring poet by night reach his fitness goals and join the next race by UTMB this September? Mohammed Ameenuddin is living his best fit life and he’s ready to conquer new fears, new heights, and new distances, including the superb 59km course that will take him from Menton to Nice. In 2017, Mohammed Ameenuddin was 120 kilograms heavy and shopping for 3XL shirts and thobes. Several thoughts came to his mind while doing this stressful task making him rethink his health choices. He then started using the treadmill
and eventually lost a few kilos. But it wasn’t enough, especially when in 2018, a crisis hit his life that affected his physical and mental state. In November of 2018, he joined a running event by a local group; his first ever 10K run for about 70-80 minutes

And now, another race is upon him: the Ultra-Trail Metropole Nice Cote d’Azur happening this September 2022. The race has four adventure races to choose from. Ameen is joining the Menton-Nice 50K run on September 24, 2022 that will start with a vertical ascent to the Col du Berceau, passing through the Borrigo waterfall before crossing the medieval village of Sainte-Agnes to reach the Cime de Baudon at 1266 km. It will then take participants on the peaks via the Fort de la Revere and Mont Bataille. The finale will take place on the Promenade des Anglais. It is quite a beautiful trail but also very challenging. “For me, UTMB is for trail running races like what FIFA is for football. The vibe of this event is totally different. I have been watching my coach and other runners do different UTMB races and I can easily feel the excitement,” Ameen shares. “The races are done purely in nature but they are tough and brutal. However, the most memorable for him would have to be the Ultra Mirage in the Sahara Desert Ultra Marathon in Tunisia last 2021. Training for this marathon was done during summer time in Saudi (and we all know how scorching hot it is) and Ameen used to drive alone for an hour to go to the deserts of Riyadh. All his training runs and strength sessions were done solo which helped him develop stronger stamina and mindset for a bout with the desert’s harsh conditions. His journey to Tunisia also took 17 hours during a pandemic. Exhausted, all he could think of was crossing the finishing line and hugging her daughter, who for the first time came with him to witness his participation. Her presence was the biggest inspiration and blessing. Being healthy has done good for his body and lifestyle.

tures of runs, training, and coaching,” he says. He is being coached by one of the best endurance coaches in the region and his weekly training plans and regular feedback enhance his performance. A typical training day for him starts at around 3:00 in the morning. He drinks water instantly after getting up from bed and meditates. He eats 3-5 dates with a cup of black coffee to fuel his run. Post-run, he hits the gym for strength training and heads back home to start his day with a good breakfast. Ameen shares that food is very important in his training too. With the support of his wife, he preps and cooks his food at home so that he can control his portions and count the nutrients needed for his training. Training in Riyadh during the hottest summer is also a challenge. “The heat makes the running tough but it also makes me tougher in learning about adequate recovery and balanced hydration which are vital to the upcoming marathon,” he said. Apart from the weather conditions, another challenge for Ameen is to balance his training with his daily life - being a husband and a father, office schedules and pressures, and social life. “I don’t find time for my training; training is a part of my daily schedule. It’s never easy to manage all these things at times which is why I get my workouts done early in the morning which provides me ample time to take a rest too.”
Ameen focuses on his training but also keeps his health a top priority. “I believe one of the best ways to take care of your health is to have fitness related goals. They will not only help you but will also have a positive ripple effect on your family to stay active and healthy.” For those wanting to start running races, Ameen advises to start slow. Speed will eventually come with proper training. “Make your running goal-oriented so that you can stick to it with ease. Running is a heuristic process. Do it not to be faster or better than others but to be a better version of yourself. Get motivation and inspiration from the runner ahead of you and become an inspiration for the one behind you. Above all, make sure to just enjoy running.” Ameen is planning to join more races in the future like the Dubai Marathon and a big solo run that will happen by the end of the year. There are so many races to run, and thinking about it, it’s easy to lose motivation. How does he continue? He wrote a quote a few years ago that keeps him motivated until now: “Motivation will always be a temporary guest. Make discipline your permanent everyday partner.” As for the Ultra-Trail Metropole Nice Cote d’Azur, Ameen will be there in the coming days. He will go the distance!

OBESITY IN SAUDI ARABIA ALEXANDER WOODMAN
The full obesity system map with thematic clusters according to Foresight, 2017. Available from: https://foresightprojects.blog.gov.uk/
Obesity and overweight result from a complex network of social and biological factors that have revealed an inherent human vulnerability to weight gain. Specific behaviors that contribute to obesity include unhealthy nutrition, physical inactivity, eating out of home, unhealthy snacking, sugar-sweetened drinks, breakfast omission, sedentary lifestyle, and energy imbalance. Multiple reports and studies have emphasized the importance of social determinants as fundamental influences on health and disease, and particularly on the growth of obesity rates. These social determinants include factors reflecting socio-demographic (gender, race/ethnicity) and psychosocial (stress, workload, depression and anxiety) influences, social structures, and the environment. An obesogenic environment is believed to boost the prevalence of obesity.
44
It is a well-established fact that over the past four decades, Saudi Arabia has witnessed rapid urbanization and changes in socio-economic status, shifting away from traditional customs towards more westernized behaviors such as dietary changes, sedentary lifestyle, eventually leading to high levels of overweight and obesity. According to United Nations Development Programme (UNDP, 2020), with one of the youngest populations in the world, where 51% of the 33.4 million people are under 25 years of age, Saudi Arabia has one of the highest obesity and overweight prevalence rates; seven out of ten people are experiencing this health condition. Saudi Arabia's obesity prevalence is higher than the regional average of 10.3% for women and 7.5% for men. The regional comparison of obesity rates in Saudi Arabia indicated that numbers vary with the highest rates of obesity in the Eastern Province (29.4%), followed by Riyadh

(26.9%), with the lowest rates being reported in Baha (14%) and Asir (18%). Studies of the relationship between dietary habits, sociodemographic, and lifestyle characteristics among Saudis have shown that adherence to a healthy diet is associated with being male, having education, high income, and being elderly. Traditional eating patterns were associated with male gender and marital status, while frequent consumption of dates and coffee was associated with skipping the daily meal. Although research on health literacy has grown in recent years, there are limited data about nutritional knowledge and attitudes in relation to healthy lifestyle among the general public of the Kingdom. The influences of nutritional knowledge on attitudes and ultimate food choice are still important research topics among Saudis. Several systems or contexts determine human behavior, including the environment, the educational system, the society in which the person is active, social groups, traditions and culture. Hence, studying the relationship between knowledge and attitudes towards nutrition may offer one possible way to better understand the impact of multiple factors on the eating behavior of Saudis and the actual reasons behind the shift from a traditional diet rich in fiber to unhealthy foods. On the final note, this approach to research, policy, and practice will be a state-of-the-art process, requiring changes in philosophy and practice with the participation of researchers, professional evaluators, target population, and funders, thereby educating a healthy, competent, and self-reliant generation who will achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

HEALTHY SUMMER MEAL AND SNACK PLAN FOR KIDS SALMA SIDDIQUA How to keep the diet of your kids healthy this summer. With longer days, hotter temperatures and no school, family gatherings, as well as traveling, your children are restless and looking for things to do. Activities will make them hungry, for sure. It can be a stressful time to make healthy choices because options are limited and motivation is low. Whatever they do, there’s no reason to let their diets slip up during the summer holidays. Making sure your kids stay consistent with their eating habits during the summer ensures both short-term and long-term health benefits. Keeping them full of the vitamins and nutrients they need helps them stay active and sets consistent healthy eating habits for them at any time of year.
1. HYDRATE. With temperatures rising, the most important thing to keep in mind during the summer is to keep your kids properly hydrated. It’s all about water! If kids are being active and sweating outside, they need to stay hydrated. And though it may be
46
tempting to just let kids grab whatever they want out of the fridge, it’s important to keep control over what they drink. • Choose water first. If your child says they are thirsty after an activity, offer water first before any other drink. • Sugar-sweetened drinks like sweet tea, lemonade, juice, or soda, are not recommended at any time of the year. Instead, try adding fruits to water or even sparkling flavored water as a way to keep drinks flavorful and interesting. • Pure fresh juices are okay in moderation but no more than a cup a day. • Hydrate with fruits and veggies which have great water content such as watermelon, melons, berries, cucumbers, celery, and bell peppers.
2. ENJOY COLD TREATS. Summer is the perfect time for ice cream, popsicles, and other cold treats to help kids stay cool. To keep it healthy, you can find 100% fruit pops at the supermarket or if they like

something creamier, greek yogurt bars or frozen yogurts can help your kids get more protein. You can also whip up homemade treats which are a lot more convenient and you have control over the ingredients. • Blend together various fruits and yogurt combinations and pour them into reusable popsicle molds. • Cut up various fruits and dip them in chocolate or yogurt then freeze them. • Use frozen fruits like bananas, mangoes, or strawberries to create homemade ice cream.
3. PLAN YOUR MEALS. Meal planning is a great way to provide a necessary structure and ensure healthy meals and snacks at any time of the year. Some ideas work especially during summer. •M ake sure to include all the necessary food groups- protein, whole grains, fruits, vegetables- into your meal planning. Changing up options and even getting different
foods on the plate can be fun for younger kids and get them more engaged in eating healthy foods. Pick a protein like chicken and then lay out all the options to create a salad bar for kids to build their own! • Another great and quick idea is soup! You can make yourself a large batch of soup like gazpacho, vegetable soup or shorba/chicken or bone broth and freeze them. Then you can heat them up when you need them and serve. • Cold pasta salads are another great summer item. You can toss a mix of whole grain or bean-based pasta with little cheese or turkey slices as well as veggies like bell peppers and zucchini to deliver both fiber and protein in the diet. • If you’re running low on time, you can keep quicker meals like sandwiches and wraps healthy by using whole grain bread and mixing in fruits, veggies, and proteins. A combo like spinach, chicken, and hummus in a wrap, with some strawberries on the side isn’t just delicious but nutritious and filling. Remember to get the kids involved in prepping and always make it fun!

NAJRAN: SAUDI’S SOUTHERN SPLENDOR SHERIDAN SWATHWOOD Go for the weather; stay for the history. Does the summer heat have you yearning for cooler temperatures and greener pastures? If so, Najran might be calling your name. The southern region sits on the Yemeni border and boasts desert sands, lush farms, and towering mountains. It’s also home to Nasrallah AlKhabi, a guide at Arabius who was excited to share his love for his homeland with me. “Is Najran different from Riyadh?” I asked. “Oh, yes! In every way,” he responded with a grin. It certainly is. The weather alone is on average 7-8ºC cooler than Riyadh this time of year. The northeastern half of the Najran region is part of the Empty Quarter, a vast and largely uninhabited desert. However, travel southwest a little further, and you’ll find dense greenery and distinct Yemeni-style
52
architecture in the rapidly growing capital city, also called Najran. Here, waters from the Sarawat Mountains and the Yemeni highlands drain into the muddy waters of Wadi Najran. The result is gorgeously green and fertile farmland that stretches for miles. If it’s history you’re after, my guide Nasrallah knows just where to look. The Al-Ukhdud Archaeological Site tells a tragic story, in which thousands of “devout believers,” likely early Christians, were killed for their faith by being thrown into a burning ditch. The massacre took place in the 5th century, nearly 100 years before the dawn of Islam. Today, you can still find traces of the fire in the ruins of the ancient city, along with the rock carvings that once decorated the homes of the people who lived there.
JUL-AUG 2022 DQ LIVING MAGAZINE
Najran’s rich and diverse story dates back even further, to a time when the region was an important stop for spice caravans. The Hima Wells, which are part of the Abar Hima Cultural Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, date back 3,000 years and still produce fresh water; some of the rocks also contain ancient inscriptions and drawings. You can also hike to the mountaintop fortress of Ra’um. It’s located atop the highest mountain in the region and surrounded by a natural granite wall and three pools of water. Nasrallah tells me Ra’um is one of the oldest fortresses in the country, offering stunning mountain and valley views. Traces of ancient Najran remain to this day, impacting everything from clothing to hospitality. There, men often wear the shimagh wrapped tightly around their heads, as opposed to the draped style prevalent in Riyadh. Traditional male dress also includes a khanjar or janbiya, a short, curved knife worn on the belt. Centuries ago, men used these weapons for self-defense. Now, Nasrallah explains, they are shown off in a traditional “knife dance” often performed at weddings or Eid celebrations. If you’re lucky enough, you could be greeted with the Zamal Najrani. It’s an elaborate welcome performance for highly esteemed visitors, featuring horses and/or camels alongside singing or dancing performers. Although rare, Nasrallah says the display symbolizes the honor and respect vital to Najrani culture. “It is my home,” he explained, “I miss it so much. I love it there.”
Nasrallah is one of many guides at Arabius who help clients learn Saudi dialect and culture. If you’re interested in learning more, visit www.arabius.com.
TASTE OF NAJRAN The food in Najran is just as rich and diverse as the rest of its culture! Nasrallah’s two favorite dishes are rogsh and marduffah. • Rogsh: a main course of seasoned meat, sometimes with vegetables. You eat it using strips of thin bread to scoop out one bite at a time. • Marduffah: a dish often served for breakfast; it is like a bowl of dough cooked with butter inside the bowl. Just rip off a piece of bread, dip, and enjoy the smoky flavor!

RAFAEL ADEMAHR VALLEJO BULNES DEPUTY HEAD OF MISSION AND HEAD OF THE CONSULAR SECTION, EMBASSY OF PERU IN RIYADH Over 10,000 residents call the DQ home. Meet Your Neighbor profiles interesting people in our international DQ Community. Learn about the diverse experience, interests, and backgrounds of DQ dwellers. Read on, and Meet Your Neighbor. Tell us about yourself. I am a Peruvian diplomat who arrived in the Kingdom a little over a year ago. In addition to having a Master's degree in International Relations and Diplomacy, I also have a Master’s in Advanced Studies in Literature. I consider myself a curious, open-minded, and friendly person, who likes to read, travel, and learn from different cultures. How would family and friends describe you? They describe me as a determined person who always tries to achieve his goals. They also consider me a fun, adventurous guy who likes to take on new challenges and has a natural inclination for arts and culture. Who or what have been the strongest influences in your life? In addition to my family, whose example has always guided my steps, I consider that the influence of my colleagues and friends, as well as the experience that I have gained in my career, has helped me to grow as an individual. The steady support of my wife has also been decisive in my personal growth. How has Saudi Arabia helped you in your career goals? Since this is my first post abroad, Saudi Arabia has been a crucial country in my professional and personal development. Although the cultural and idiomatic differences may have seemed significant at first, I consider that I have been able to quickly adapt to the country. I am having the chance to discover a very rich culture that shares many characteristics with my own, particularly in terms of respect and pride for its roots and heritage and the fundamental value of family in society.
56
What are you most proud of accomplishing so far? I am proud of having assumed essential and demanding tasks and responsibilities, which, of course, are a significant challenge for me and that I have been able to overcome. I am pleased to share that this year, the tourist visa applications to Peru have experienced a remarkable increase, which accounts for the interest of our Saudi friends in getting to know Peru and discovering its outstanding and unique attractions. What are your thoughts and insights on being a resident of Saudi Arabia? Since my arrival, I have been able to see how Saudi Arabia is becoming an increasingly open society. The organization of major international events, both at an official and entertainment level, confirms this. At the same time, I have witnessed the hospitality and generosity of its people, which has certainly captivated me. Where are your favorite places to visit in Riyadh? In addition to architectural wonders such as the Kingdom Center or Al-Faisaliyah Tower, I am very attracted to places such as Al-Diriyah, that have managed to preserve the history and traditions of the country, and that allow foreigners like me to know how the lifestyle of the ancient inhabitants of Riyadh was. What do you like most about the DQ? On the surface, what I like the most about DQ are the parks and gardens, all with a very particular style, typical of the region. From another perspective, one of the aspects that I highlight most about the DQ is that it is a place where Saudis and foreigners live and work. The DQ is a point of convergence where the international coexists with the local, giving it a unique character.
