THE SPIRIT OF RAMADAN IQRA SULTANA LODHI Ramadan in Saudi Arabia is always special. It is not just about fasting and feasting but also about self-control, gratitude, generosity, and compassion. Ramadan has been different for the past two years because of the pandemic but now that Saudi Arabia has dropped COVID-19 restrictions, we are reminded once again of what and how it was. The spirit of Ramadan in Saudi Arabia, and the world, lives on.

DQ LIVING MAGAZINE MAR-APR 2022

The sighting of the crescent moon marks the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

The sacred month of Ramadan is just around the corner and the excitement is tangible. Streets, shops, malls, and supermarkets are shining with beautiful Ramadan decors. Houses are being cleaned, decorated, and organized for the holy month. This is a chance to recharge our faith and soul. Muslims devote most of their time in performing special prayers and reading the Quran.

considered incomplete without the presence of Vimto or Tang or RoohAfza! The sunset meal is a time for the entire family to gather around and eat as one. Special TV programs and series are aired during the month of Ramadan; they can be religious, historical or just plain old soap operas. After a long day of fasting, you will find families watching TV, resting or napping before they leave for the Taraweeh prayers.

A Day in Ramadan A typical day in Ramadan starts with the pre-dawn meal (Suhoor) at Fajr, extends until sunset which is when the fast is broken with a special meal (Iftar) and ends with night prayers (Taraweeh). The last ten days of Ramadan are spent in midnight prayers (Qiyam Al Layl) and it culminates into the festivities of Eid.

Mosques and Devotion Mosques throughout Saudi Arabia conduct the night prayers called Taraweeh. Devotees throng to mosques to get prime spots within the area for a comfortable praying experience; otherwise, you will find yourself on the pavements praying because of the crowd gathered. Either way, the joy of praying with the fellow worshippers is incomparable. Ramadan is a good time to bring out your Islamic literature to learn more about the religion and its pillars, its great personalities and their ways.

A characteristic meal comprises of dates, sambousas, shorba (soup), kebabs, rice or pasta, dessert, fruits and drinks. Iftar is

Shopping and Health Taraweeh is usually followed by a trip to a mall, supermarket, or park. The fitness aficionados would be found at gyms and walkways. Mall timings differ during this period. Especially during the last ten days, malls are open until Fajr for people to shop. Sales and marketing departments work around the clock to cater to the needs of customers. With online shopping taking precedence in recent times, people prefer to order at home for an easier, no-hassle experience. Food and Socializing Eateries and restaurants across Saudi Arabia offer Iftar deals thru the holy month. "All-you-can-eat" buffets and Ramadan tents are two examples. There are specific drinks that are prepared in Ramadan, namely Sobya (a drink made from barley and bread), Qamar Al Din (Apricot nectar), mint lemonade, and Jellab (grapes, dates,

and rose water). Socializing is a component of this month. Family and friendship are given much priority. Lavish feasts are prepared and people are invited to share in the joy of eating. Iftar and Suhoor parties are a chance for the fashionistas to dress up and let their hair down. Jallabiyas, dresses, abayas in varied designs and textures are a hit during parties. Traditions and culture are at great display during these events. The Month of Giving Charity is given utmost importance during the holy month. Apart from the mandatory Zakat Al Fitr, Muslims are extremely generous during this month and charity drives are organized throughout. Food packets and boxes are distributed to underprivileged families. Clothes and toys are collected and sorted to be distributed within the city and to people in impoverished countries. Generosity, compassion are the branches of this beautiful month. After all, kindness and

smiles are emotions to be spread around. Consider donating to the following organizations: https://www.ksrelief.org/ and https://www.mealsofmercy.org/ Family Nights This is a staple during Ramadan with family and friends gathering post-Taraweeh for games and food. Carrom boards, playing cards, and Monopoly some common games played at night. Trivia games such as Trivial Pursuit and Darussalam’s Quran Quest are recent Ramadan obsessions. Game nights usually extend till suhoor. Activities and events can also be done outdoors and we have the perfect suggestions for you in the following pages of this issue of DQ Living. Local Markets The local markets in Saudi Arabia come alive during this month. The streets of Balad in Jeddah, and Deerah in Riyadh are lit up with traditional Ramadan lanterns and vendors bring their wares to the streets. Food trucks, fragrance, toys, and clothes are sold with customers bargain-

ing stringently for them. Many visit oud shops, traditional sweet markets and gift shops as Eid comes closer. Visiting the Two Holy Mosques The pious gather at the two holy mosques in Makkah and Madinah for breaking their fasts, for Taraweeh prayers and Qiyam al Layl-the night prayers that take place during the last ten days of Ramadan. Special arrangements are made by the authorities for iftar in the premises with long sufras (plastic table covers) being spread for the devotees. Food boxes are distributed amongst the worshippers before sunset. One will also find locals distributing homemade food packs. Ramadan traditions are many and varied. They differ by country, tradition, culture and ethnicity but what binds it all is the purity and benevolence of the month. The calm and joy of Ramadan is incomparable. May the beauty and peace of Ramadan encompass every person worldwide. Wishing our dear readers, Ramadan Mubarak!

A SUSTAINABLE RAMADAN ZENIA DUELL

Ramadan is a time of personal contemplation and public generosity. However, aside from giving generously to the less fortunate, let us also be generous toward our beautiful planet. Here are some ways to make Ramadan more sustainable.

Working towards a sustainable future is an important aspect of Saudi Vision 2030, and in order to be truly sustainable, we must consider our impact on our environment in every facet of our lives. Here are three ways on how you can be environmentally-sustainable during Ramadan. Reduce Food Waste Did you know that up to half of all food prepared during Ramadan is thrown away? According to a recent UN report, food waste is one of the biggest generators of greenhouse gases which harm the planet and cause global warming. So instead of throwing away any leftovers after your iftar, cover them, keep them in the fridge, and reuse them the next day. Leftover rice can simply be reheated or fried in a wok together with some whisked egg, sliced vegetables and soy sauce to create a delicious Asian stir-fry. You can also layer cooked rice, broiled chicken and roasted vegetables in a filo pastry case and bake it to create an impressive pie. Mezze dishes will keep in the fridge for a few days; cold meats can be sliced into nutritious salads, and leftover bread is just as good the next day if you sprinkle it with a little water and pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Ramadan is all about sharing food with friends and family – just try to avoid sharing your food with the bin too!

Go Car-Free in the DQ As you fast from food during daylight hours, try taking on the challenge of fasting from using your car for short trips within the DQ. With its pavements, parks and covered walkways between main squares, the DQ makes it not only convenient but also very pleasant to walk from place to place. If you need to get somewhere quickly, try using one of the DQ’s new electric scooters – just download the Kiwi app. As you travel in the open air, take a moment to look around you and appreciate nature’s beauty: the scent of flowers, the sound of birdsong, the sensation of a light warm breeze on your face. This is the environment we are trying to protect. By choosing to walk, rather than drive, you are not only improving your own health, but the health of the planet, too.

Reuse Your Plastic Bags Did you know that the man who invented the plastic bag did it to save trees being cut down to make paper bags? He intended for the durable, waterproof plastic bags to be used again and again – plastic takes thousands of years to degrade, so one bag should last a lifetime. But now, we treat plastic bags the same way people used to treat paper bags, and they’re causing huge damage to the wildlife on this planet. This Ramadan, challenge yourself to reuse plastic bags the way their inventor intended us to. Take your own bags to the supermarket when you shop for groceries or to the mall when you shop for gifts and clothes. You could even challenge your friends to do the same and set a new trend! As we share this period of contemplation, gratitude and reflection, remember to contemplate the incredible beauty of the world we live in. Be grateful for all the gifts nature gives us. Reflect on what you can do to help keep the planet healthy and safe for you and your loved ones, far into the future.

MECCA: HOME OF THE HEART OF ISLAM SHERIDAN SWATHWOOD “Words cannot describe the majesty of this place.” Abdulrahman Aljohani sat across from me, smiling, in the conference room at Arabius as he said those words. He’s been my Arabic guide and gateway into Saudi culture for a little over a month now. Before he moved to Riyadh, Abdulrahman’s home was Yanbu, a town within driving distance of Islam’s holiest city: Mecca. Every year, he spends the final ten days of Ramadan in Mecca. So, who better to offer insight into the massive religious significance of this region? region is the city of Mecca — the birthplace of the Muslim prophet Muhammed. At the center of the city is the Grand Mosque, which houses the Kaaba. The story goes that Abraham and his son Ishmael erected an altar, now a 50-foot black cube, thousands of years ago to worship God. After Abraham banished Ishmael and his mother Hagar, the story says that Hagar climbed Mount Safa, a hill nearby, to look for water. Unsuccessful, she climbed another, now known as Mount Marwa. After running back and forth seven times, the story says that an angel from

Allah struck the ground, and water sprung forth. It’s a story that many Muslim children grow up hearing, according to Abdulrahman. Today, the Muslim pilgrimage, also known as Umrah or Hajj, centers around these spots. Islam teaches that Muslims who circle the Kaaba and run between the two hills seven times each will be forgiven of all their past sins. Islam also teaches that Hagar’s spring, called Zamzam, has healing properties. The practice is a requirement for every Muslim at some point in his or her lifetime, provided they are physically and financially able to do it. Many Saudis, however, will make this journey many times in their lifetime. Abdulrahman tells me he goes every year during Ramadan. “It is an incredible experience,” he said, “Very spiritual. You are with so many people all wanting the same thing: to be closer to Allah.” Alaa Alhusseini, another guide at Arabius, echoed this. “It is so much more peaceful to go to Mecca during Ramadan,” she explained, “We feel closer to God and that He hears our prayers better during this time, especially when we are near the Kaaba.” There are strict rules surrounding this pilgrimage. An important one for tourists is that non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the city, due to the sacred nature of the holy sites within.

ARABIUS GUIDES ON RAMADAN Favorite tradition: • Abdulrahman Aljohani: Spending time with family • Abdulilah Alhussain: Gathering with loved ones • Malak Almasoud: Everyone enjoying life at night • Amira Alqahtani: Gathering for iftar (breaking of the fast) with family Favorite food: • Abdulrahman Aljohani: Sheba soup • Abdulilah Alhussain: Mom’s pasta • Malak Almasoud: Sambusa and sheba • Amira Alqahtani: Sambusa made with chicken or cheese Most challenging part of Ramadan: • Abdulrahman Aljohani: Cooking by the fire while the fast continues • Abdulilah Alhussain: Working while fasting and shifting your sleep schedule • Malak Almasoud: Going without water all day— “it’s tolerable until your sides start hurting!” • Amira Alqahtani: Fasting during the summer

Once pilgrims are within a certain distance of Mecca, they are forbidden from cutting their hair or nails. When their journey is complete, men shave their heads, and women cut off a lock of their hair. As I concluded my talk with Abdulrahman, I asked him the question no journalist should forget: “Is there anything I missed that you think everyone should know about the city or region of Mecca?” He smiled and replied, “Words cannot describe the majesty of this place. You must see it for yourself.” If you’re interested in learning Saudi dialect and culture, Arabius tailors its programs for various types of clients, including hotels and businesses owners. GO

FAMILY-FRIENDLY GUIDE TO

MAURITIUS ISLAND SARAH HOFFMAN A year-round destination with everything you want from a tropical vacation.

We traveled to the breathtaking island of Mauritius on the coast of East Africa, and we can’t stop thinking about it. So, we’re here to share all the details you need to know about traveling to this lush, tropical island. Flying out over the heat-haze cityscape of Riyadh, I felt my stomach fill with butterflies of wanderlust and anticipation. We were just a flight away from one of the world’s most idyllic tropical islands, where my family and I would be spending a week immersed in rich cultures and natural beauty. The children waved goodbye to Saudi Arabia from our window seat, and we let our minds drift off to imagine the crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, and vibrant terrain we were heading for.

GO ABOUT MAURITIUS Mauritius is a quaint, tropical island off the coast of East Africa. Locals mostly speak English, French, and Mauritian Creole, but it’s truly a world of culture and diversity in terms of everything from its people to its flora and fauna. The island is home to marvelous turquoise waters, sparkly lagoons, soft sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, bright green mountains, and everything you want from a tropical, family-friendly destination. Simply walking off the plane, I was greeted by the salty aroma of the Indian Ocean and a gentle paradise-like breeze, and I knew I was going to have a hard time leaving. Speaking of Riyadh, we locals are used to the hot, sundrenched, and dry days of the city. Mauritius is a breath of fresh air, literally. It’s dewy and humid, but completely warm and mild all at once. It’s the best of tropical weather, and it helped create the ideal situation for exploring this miraculous little island. And while exploring the island, here are 5 of the top places to visit in Mauritius with a family. Casela Nature Parks Casela Nature Parks is the epitome of family-friendly fun in Mauritius. It’s a massive park divided into five zones. The park offers African safaris, mountain ziplining, theme park rides, restaurants, a 4D cinema, and so much more. Imagine taking quad buggies through beautifully rugged terrain while getting to see zebras, white rhinos, and other safari animals up close. Then, an hour later taking on an exciting zipline ride boasting gorgeous views of Mauritius. It’s a must-have experience! Open every day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and until 9:00 PM on Saturdays. Adult tickets are Rs 294. Children's tickets are Rs 200. Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark One of the most iconic places to visit in Mauritius, the Seven Colored Earth Geopark is a tremendously unique geological formation in the Chamarel plain of the Rivière Noire District of the island. What makes it so special is its sand dunes encompassing seven distinct colors. Kids will love the vibrant colors and nature and geology lovers will be impressed with this work of natural art. Open every day from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Adult tickets are Rs 225. Children's tickets are Rs 75.

Chamarel Waterfall Just near the geopark is a 272-ft waterfall set in the middle of lush vegetation. It is one of the most beautiful places in Mauritius. You can see the waterfall from a viewing deck at the Seven Colored Earth Geopark or follow a trail down for a closer look and a swim in its shallow pool. L'Aventure du Sucre For a chance to see and understand the cultivation of sugarcane, a visit to L'Aventure du Sucre is a must. With interactive displays, it’s fun for the entire family and boasts of dreamy, palm-tree-filled views and even has a shop to stock up on sugary goodies. Open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Admission Fees: Adults: Rs 525 (tastings included) Children (6 to 13): Rs 250 (exploration guide included) Students (13 to 26): Rs 250 (student ID required) Glass Bottom Boat Ride Some of the best things to do in Mauritius happen on the water, and a glass-bottom boat ride is one of those things, especially for younger children. See vibrant marine life navigating through crystal clear waters as you soak up fantastic oceanside views. Then, take a closer look at the fish with a snorkeling adventure! It’s a little bit of relaxation and adventure in one.

WHEN TO VISIT Mauritius is considered a year-round destination. However, the best times to visit the island are from April to June and from September to December to avoid the peak of summer and winter, the only two seasons in Mauritius. Covid-19 Situation As of March 12, 2022, incoming visitors no longer have to present a negative PCR test taken 72 hours before arrival in Mauritius. Also, over 90% of the adult population is vaccinated. Testing is widely available and can usually be arranged by your hotel. However, be sure to plan and schedule RT-PCR tests required for return travel well in advance as turnaround times can vary. Flights Saudi Airlines flies directly to Mauritius at different times throughout the year. However, another popular flight option from Riyadh is through Emirates Airways. After a quick transit in Dubai the flight to Mauritius is 6.5 hours. Visas Citizens of GCC and western countries such as the USA and UK, do not require a visa to enter Mauritius. Nationals of countries such as the Philippines can easily obtain a visa on arrival and some nationalities require a visa prior to travel. Transportation Travel agents provide different transportation booking options including private chauffeured cars and rental vehicles online via their respective websites. Many hotels can also arrange your transportation for a fee. Public buses are available through the island and don’t require pre-booking. In 2019, Mauritius also introduced the metro which provides tickets for purchase at the stations and online. Keep in mind, roads through the mountains are narrow and winding, and driving is on the right side.

WHERE TO STAY We stayed at the timeless and elegant JW Marriott Mauritius Resort, located on the Le Morne peninsula on the southwest tip of the island. The hotel is equipped with picturesque rooms, many outdoor swimming pools, and direct beach access. The property provides idyllic views over the lagoon and a backdrop of Le Morne Brabant Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As cliche as it sounds, I felt like a movie star while staying here. Plus, the kids’ play area gave me and my husband quality time for ourselves, while perfectly combining family-time and romance. One of our trip highlights was our evening with a private beach dinner on the white sand beaches at the JW Marriott Mauritius. We reminisced about our days and watched the sunset over bubbly cocktails and delicacies fresh from the ocean. The JW Marriott Mauritius is in a great location with easy access to some of the best things to do on the island. Every color in Mauritius is rich and vibrant, creating one of the most picturesque tropical destinations I’ve ever laid eyes on. The colors combined with its fantastic weather, sparkling lagoons, and picturesque mountaintops make this African island a paradise destination for families. I spent the majority of the flight back to Saudi Arabia swiping through photographs and replaying the memories in my head... Needless to say, Mauritius is magical, and it should absolutely be on your family vacation bucket list.

DISCUSSION WITH

H.E. SHOWKUTALLY SOODHUN AMBASSADOR OF THE REPUBLIC OF MAURITIUS ALEXANDER WOODMAN How important is tourism for Mauritius's economy and society? What is the impact of opening direct flights between Saudi Arabia and Mauritius? Before the pandemic, the tourism and hospitality industry contributed around 24% of the GDP of Mauritius. Some 50,000 people are directly employed in this sector accounting for 22% of the country’s employment. Tourism has a significant spillover effect on the whole economy (transport, agriculture, wholesale and retail trade, and administrative and support services).

32

are from the business community and they can have a glimpse of opportunities offered during their stay.

During the pre-pandemic period, 22,788 Saudis visited the island in 2019 compared to 16,507 in 2018, an increase of 38.1%. During the pandemic, the number of tourists was lower because our borders were closed from March to September 2021.

Mauritius is gradually becoming a leading tourist destination for Saudi travelers. What is your advice for Saudis traveling to Mauritius? Luxury tourist destination, quality service, sandy beaches, lush nature, a wide range of water and land-based activities, rich gastronomy and culture, luxury accommodation, villas with private pools, world-class golf and spa facilities and the hospitality of Mauritians... these are the assets that will please Saudi travelers. The population of Mauritius, which is multicultural, multi-religious and also multi-ethnic, is known for its peaceful coexistence and communal harmony. The right of worship is enshrined in the Constitution of Mauritius.

The impact of direct flights between Saudi Arabia and Mauritius is definitely a boost for our tourism and also the business sector as many Saudi visitors

The presence of Muslims dates as far back as the French colonization in 1722 when Indian skilled workers were recruited. Some decades later, Muslim trad-

ers settled on the island. Muslims account for almost 20% of the population and the community is well integrated into society. There is total freedom on how the Muslims practice their religion and we have a few denominations among Muslims. The presence of Muslims in Mauritius assures that the food in practically all restaurants/hotels and places of restoration is certified halal. Muslim dishes are now an integral part of Mauritian cuisine. This respect for habits and customs contributes to making Mauritius a family destination known for its diversity and rich ancestral tradition. One of the main goals of Vision 2030 is to make the Kingdom a leading tourist destination. In your opinion, what makes Saudi Arabia an attractive and charming place to visit? Mauritians of all faiths know Saudi Arabia through the two holy mosques in Madinah and Mecca. Hence, religion is an important element. Religious tourism is very important in the mosaic of what is Saudi Arabia in the Mauritius psyche. Furthermore, Mauritians who are avid fans of history recognize Arab presence in the Indian Ocean and in Mauritius before the Portuguese came. The island of Mauritius was first named Din-Al-Arabi. There is an important tourist resort in the south west of the island namely Dinarobin which stands as a testimony to this reality. There are also other Arabic names which are part of our lingua franca today. Saudi Arabia is also known for its seafood, ports, dates, perfumes, dunes, and its vast reserves of black gold. It is also known as the land that witnessed some old civilizations and became a crossroad of inland world trade at one point in time. Hence, the image of Saudi Arabia is very rich and diverse for the inquisitive Mauritian. According to the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC, 2019), Mauritius has achieved the 'GSTC-Recognized Standard.' How does a focus on sustainability contribute to preserving national heritage beyond environment and nature? Recent trends in the worldwide tourism sector indicate a change in what modern travelers are looking for. There is a shift towards more authentic experiences and encounters with the local community. As for Mauritius, the focus on sustainability has made us propose various aspects of our multicultural heritage. The population of Mauritius is made of descendants of migrants coming from Europe, Africa, India, and

China. Their heritage has been preserved and can be seen in daily life in the languages, religion, food and way of living. Churches, temples and mosques coexist across the island. These are assets that make out our sustainability offer. You will be glad to know that this year, two historic villages of Mauritius: Le Morne and Vieux Grand Port are on the list of the "Best Tourist Villages" for 2021, made public by the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) in December 2021. The first village, whose cultural track is already inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, is iconic for its slave history and the second one bears testimony to the first inhabitants of the island. Diplomatic Quarter connects most of the foreign missions in Saudi Arabia. How do you think this approach contributes to multilateral and intercultural diplomacy? The DQ houses most, if not all, diplomatic representations. Furthermore, it also has residential areas and some very beautiful parks that are very family-friendly. This concept of organizing space is very interesting and promotes a host of informal and formal intercultural interactions. Currently the regional office of the World Tourism Office for the Middle East and other regional offices are located in the DQ. Hence, the DQ provides a platform for official interaction. Two important ministries are also in the DQ and this facilitates official interaction as well as bringing the ministries closer to the diplomatic community. The construction of shopping malls and food courts, I believe, would further contribute towards more fluid interactions between the Saudis and the foreign community. What is the daily routine of the Ambassador of Mauritius in the DQ? Any favorite places? My embassy is very small, therefore, the array of my diplomatic actions is very limited and very focused. In terms of places of interest, there are many historical sites which need to be revitalized around Riyadh. I am looking forward to the completion of the Diriyah Gate project which I have no doubt would be an example of the Saudi savoir-faire and rich architectural/historical tradition. What is even more fantastic is the ability and vision of the rulers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in blending tradition with modernity.

can get the care they need as early as possible. In fact, women whose breast cancer is detected at an early stage have a 93% or higher chance of recovery in the first 5 years. It’s often fear, or social stigma or the feeling of “it can’t happen to me”, that discourages women from regular breast screening. However, to truly reduce rates of breast cancer, women must come together and empower each other to make screening a priority. So remember to take care of yourself and your loved ones through regular breast cancer screening and make October last all year long! *Terms and conditions apply: service is by appointment and abiding by the hospitals regulations and official doctor consultation. Check-ups can be redeemed from 20th March 2022 - June 2022 or until the reach is achieved.

The British International School Riyadh in the DQ:

LEARNING, ENRICHMENT AND WELLBEING ALEXANDER WOODMAN The British International School of Riyadh (BISR) is a not-forprofit multi-campus school, providing high-quality education to students aged 3 to 18 since 1979. BISR offers a holistic education with broad collaborative programmes, including extra-curricular activities, leadership opportunities, service programmes, and residential trips. The newest BISR campus opened in September 2020 in the heart of the Diplomatic Quarter (DQ). The DQ campus is a modern vibrant learning environment with spaces that support a playbased approach with the youngest children, along with specialist facilities to deliver learning for the older students studying for qualifications offered by a range of international awarding bodies. The library sits at the heart of the school with plenty of spaces both indoors and outdoors to support sporting activities. The leadership team at BISR work closely with members of the DQ community to create a number of partnerships to support extra-curricular programmes. Students of the DQ campus have full access to the BISR desert camp a short distance from Riyadh. Additionally, a broad range of extra-curricular activities are offered at the DQ campus; students are also given a chance to participate in local and international trips.

36

MAR-APR 2022 DQ LIVING MAGAZINE

DQ Living Magazine had a great opportunity to discuss the BISR DQ campus, facilities, and curriculum. How do you envision the contribution of BISR to the multicultural community of DQ? We are very proud to be a community of over 60 different nationalities at BISR DQ. We see ourselves as a hub within the community, drawing together families from around the world in our common goal of providing a high quality, holistic education for our children. Children learn most effectively when they are supported in this process by parents and the school. Our families have the opportunity to meet regularly with the BISR DQ team, joining us for concerts, sporting activities, exhibitions of student work, and other special events. When not in use for student activities, we offer a range of activities for parents and members of the wider DQ community. What is the difference between the DQ and Al Hamra campuses' academic programmes/curricula? Are there specific admission requirements for BISR DQ campus? At both campuses, the primary curriculum is underpinned by the English national curriculum, adapted to reflect our international context and local learning opportunities. At the DQ, our 11–14-year-old senior school students follow the International Middle Years (IMYC) Curriculum, with students in years 10-11, following International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) programmes of study.

Our oldest students at BISR DQ follow the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme, a prestigious course for 16–18-year-old students offered in over 97 different countries around the world. The IB Diploma programme is widely considered to be the premier post-16 qualification in the world, giving students access to higher education courses in top universities globally. Please elaborate on IB Diploma at DQ campus and AS/A Levels at Al Hamra campus. The IB Diploma programme (IBDP) incorporates both breadth of study and depth of knowledge, enabled by the IB approaches to teaching and learning, which are grounded in contemporary educational research. Students study six subjects from the groups shown in the graphic belowthree at standard level and three at higher level - selected from: studies in language and literature; at least one additional language; the humanities under ‘individuals and societies’; the sciences, technology and design; mathematics, and the arts (the latter may be substituted for an additional subject from groups 2-4). The core components seek to ensure that students flourish physically, emotionally and ethically, as well as intellectually. Students explore the nature of knowledge itself and learn to examine their own assumptions through the programme’s unique theory of knowledge course. The extended essay is a self-directed piece of research, culminating in a 4,000-word paper on a subject of the students own

choosing - a great experience to draw on for independent work at university and beyond. The Creativity Action Service (CAS) component engages students in experiences that involve creative thinking; physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle; and an element of unpaid, voluntary exchange, complementing the academic demands found elsewhere in the programme. Should students prefer to opt for A levels, studying a narrower range of subjects in their final two years, this is still available to them as an alternative route at our Al Hamra campus. What is your vision for the future collaboration with the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, DQ Management in terms of expanding students' educational experience beyond the standard curriculum?

38

At BISR, student learning is underpinned by three pillars: learning, enrichment and wellbeing. Being in the heart of the DQ, we are able to tap into a range of guest speakers and access local facilities to enhance our work in these three areas. As the DQ continues to develop, for example with the sports center next to our BISR DQ campus, we look forward to making new connections and evolving strong partnerships. We already use the DQ footpaths to support our Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Level Award and are developing links with a range of embassies. Our campus is set in an attractive urban landscape providing great spaces, both indoors and outdoors, to support learning and wellbeing. We have ambitious plans to develop our outdoor curriculum further, taking advantage of these spaces within the wider DQ area.

MAR-APR 2022 DQ LIVING MAGAZINE

What will be your remarks on the concept of DQ in accomplishing REACH (respect-excellence-accountability-challenge-happiness) vision and mission of BISR? At BISR our vision and mission underpin all that we do. We offer world class programmes, with equal emphasis on learning, enrichment and wellbeing. Students learn most effectively when they feel happy, safe and secure, making wellbeing a priority. Participation in enrichment activities such as extra-curricular clubs, trips and service learning supports the achievement of strong academic outcomes. We therefore focus equally on all three of these areas. At BISR we are committed to offering programmes that are on a par with the best international schools around the world. To this end we are accredited by a range of different organizations, including the International Baccalaureate Organisation, the Council of International Schools, and as a British School Overseas. Each organization has rigorous standards

and allows us to measure ourselves against top schools in the UK and internationally. How do you see the role of BISR in upbringing the future Saudi leaders in these times of great changes as part of Vision 2030? Like Vision 2030, our vision at BISR is also ambitious and outward looking. Combining a multicultural environment with a world class curriculum will help prepare our students well for life in modern Saudi Arabia. Students are provided with plenty of opportunities to develop their leadership skills within a range of different contexts. Our emphasis is on creating flexible, creative and skilled individuals who are critical thinkers and great problem solvers. We support them to work collaboratively and be able to communicate their ideas clearly and convincingly. Our REACH motto emphasizes character development, something that we support through our learning, wellbeing and enrichment programmes.

HAVE A HEALTHY RAMADAN SALMA SIDDIQUA The holy month of Ramadan, which falls on the ninth month of the Islamic Hijra calendar, is often seen as a time to practice self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for the less fortunate. It is a month of contrasts: celebration as well as reflection and measured abandon as well as strict discipline. It’s also a time of great feasts: from each evening’s Iftar (sunset feast) to Suhoor (early morning feast) accompanied by exciting Ramadan dining deals and offers in restaurants and cafes throughout the month. For many, it is the traditional foods from childhood, feasts with friends and families gathering around the table that bring memories flooding back. Make this Ramadan a healthy and a happy memory for your children to look back upon. There is evidence to suggest that fasting can have positive effects on your health and well-being: Regulates ‘bad’ cholesterol A recent study found that fasting affects the lipid profile. This results in reduced blood cholesterol, which can keep heart attacks, strokes, and other diseases at bay.

42

Curbs appetite Observing Ramadan and fasting give your lifestyle and digestive system a positive u-turn. As your body gets used to eating less, your digestive system gets a chance to rest and your stomach gradually shrinks in size. This reduces your appetite, and the results can last longer than many trendy diets. Detoxifies Fasting not only uses your fat reserves, but also cleanses your body of harmful toxins that might be present in fat deposits. With the digestive system on a month-long overhaul, your body naturally detoxifies, giving you the opportunity to continue a healthier lifestyle beyond Ramadan. Boosts mood and mental clarity Fasting can be a method of ‘supercharging’ the brain, increasing growth and development of new brain cells, in turn sharpening responses to information around us.

COLUMN HEALTH WAYS TO HELP IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH DURING RAMADAN: 1. Have a healthy Iftar Traditionally, breaking your fast with dates which are packed with fiber, potassium, magnesium, and fructose, helps aid digestion and replenishes your body’s blood sugar levels. Light soup is a great choice to start your main Iftar meal as well as fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, squash or spinach: these mostly contain water which helps replace fluids. Bananas are also soothing to the stomach and are slow energy releasing. Dates and bananas also help avoid muscle cramps. Take it easy with the amount of heavy, creamy, and fried foods, as well as salty and sugary dishes. Consider opting for fish and leaner cuts of meat, wholegrain or brown rice and pasta - as well as remembering to include your greens! Taking your time while eating, and keeping an eye on portion control will also help aid digestion and prevent weight gain. 2. Make Suhoor wholesome Balance your Suhoor with nutrient-rich food like oatmeal, cheese, labneh, fruits, and vegetables. Certain foods with lower glycemic index (low GI) including oats, quinoa, multigrain and wholegrain breads, hummus and yoghurt are good options as they release energy slowly throughout the day. 3. Stay hydrated Adults, on average, need 2-3 liters of water each day so make sure to drink plenty of water, milk, laban, and fresh juices rather than tea and coffee to provide your body with enough hydration to keep you going. 4. Eat, rest, and exercise strategically Planning your activities and meals after breaking your fast will refuel you and prepare you for the next day of fasting. Studies on weight loss/gain during Ramadan have shown that energy intake remains the same or increases, despite a decrease in meal frequency. Remaining active helps reduce fatigue, gives your body the strength to keep going, and is a good opportunity to lose weight if needed. It’s best to exercise just before Suhoor, or a few hours after Iftar to make the most of your workouts. 5. Pick up healthy habits (and drop the unhealthy ones) Ramadan is also a chance for you to quit addictions like smoking or sugar. It’s a good time to slowly decrease your dependency on tea, coffee, and fizzy drinks. The month of Ramadan is a great opportunity to focus on bringing back a balanced and healthy lifestyle in your life. Wish you all a happy and healthy Ramadan, and may Allah (SWT) bless you for your efforts. Ramadan Mubarak!

PENNE WITH RAGU This is a perfect recipe for the gathering of family and friends. It is a dish we love to eat all together while sharing a good chat with the family, enjoying the perfect matching of the ingredients especially in the cold days of the winter. This dish is also very healthy because it has proteins and carbohydrates. Ingredients: - 1 carrot - 1 red onion - 1 celery - Oil of olive, extra virgin - 500g minced veal meat - Pureed tomatoes - Stock - Parmesan reggiano, grated - Salt - Black pepper

Method: 1. Chop all the vegetables and make the Soffritto (finely chopped carrots, onions, celery, sauteed slowly with a little olive oil), goldening it for 10 minutes. 2. Add the pureed tomatoes and the stock. 3. Stir for a couple of hours. 4. Boil the penne pasta as you like and add the Ragu. 5. Add the oil, the parmesan, and the pepper.

Method: 1. Boil apart the penne pasta as desired. 2. Chop the cherry tomatoes in small cubes and add to the hot penne together with the fresh basil leaves. 3. Add the ground pepper, the salt, the parmesan, and the oil.

Learn about the diverse experience, interests, and backgrounds of DQ dwellers. Read on, and Meet Your Neighbor. Tell us about yourself. I founded the Wadi Book Club, an inclusive place where everyone is welcome to read and discuss English literature - both fiction and nonfiction. If you're interested in joining the Wadi Book Club, please find us on Instagram @wadibookclub How would family and friends describe you? I have a lot of energy, which is encouraging and exhausting for my friends and family in equal measures! Who or what have been the strongest influences in your life? Gertrude Bell. She was a British diplomat and explorer who was the first Westerner to travel across the desert from Damascus to Ha'il. She inspired my interest in the Middle East. What brought you to Riyadh? My husband saw a job opportunity here and we decided that this would be an exciting adventure for us! I then also landed a job in Riyadh with the strategic communications firm, Edelman. What led you to your career and how has Saudi Arabia helped you in your career goals? In the UK, I was a TV producer - I've made history documentaries for the BBC, Netflix, Discovery Channel, and more. I'd wanted to be a TV producer since I was sixteen, so after I finished my Bachelor’s degree in Classics, I moved straight to London and worked my way up the career ladder. Then I decided to study for a Masters in Strategic Communications, which opened up a whole new career path for me - one which I've started here in Riyadh by working for Edelman. What are you most proud of accomplishing so far? Winning an award for my short film, Painting Freedom, which was about rehabilitation through art for Yazidi women who had escaped ISIS captivity.

What are your thoughts and insights on being a resident of Saudi Arabia? This country has so much to offer. Kind people, beautiful landscapes, great food, and an infectious sense of optimism. I'm keen to watch, learn, and contribute where I can to the transformation that is happening here. Where are your favorite places to visit in Riyadh? We always take guests who visit us to Saudi Scenes Gallery. Duaa, who runs it, always has such a wonderful selection of paintings, gifts, and antiques. What were your first impressions of the DQ? I remember noticing the beautiful patterns in the covered walkways around Fazari and Al Kindy Squares. I love the simple, elegant designs that create a sense of openness while also providing shade. What is something you wish the DQ had, but currently doesn’t? Clothing stores. Preferably a second-hand or ethically-sourced clothing store too, so that we can stay socially and environmentally responsible with our shopping. Any tips/recommendations/advice for your DQ neighbors? Get involved with all the brilliant things going on in the DQ! There is a wonderful thriving community here you can attend picnics, yoga classes, walking groups, language groups, or even (shameless plug) the Wadi Book Club! What are you looking forward to in the coming season? I'm looking forward to finding out what Ramadan is like! I can't wait to attend an iftar.
