COVER

SAUDI ARABIA:

THE MILESTONES OF 2021 ROSITSA DOROVSKA

2021 has been a fruitful year for Saudi Arabia. Despite the ongoing pandemic, Saudi Arabia managed to rise above the challenges. With a leadership focused on harnessing the nation’s intrinsic strengths, many notable achievements have been made in the past months to solidify the pillars of the Kingdom’s vision: a vibrant society, a thriving economy, and an ambitious nation. We look back at Saudi Arabia’s fulfilling 2021.

DQ LIVING MAGAZINE

NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2021

Here is a recap of Saudi Arabia's achievements during the last twelve months, paving the way for a better 2022. The 41st Summit of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) in AlUla The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was the host country of the 41st GCC Summit, a historic event held in the ancient city of AlUla. Titled ‘Sultan Qaboos and Sheikh Sabah Summit’ in memory of the late rulers of the Sultanate of Oman and the Emirate of Kuwait, the six -member states of the Council – Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates had conceived common GCC policies under the Declaration of AlUla and promised to further strengthen the bonds of brotherhood among them. Another important outcome of the Summit was the restoration of the diplomatic relations with Qatar.

The “Saudi Green Initiative'' and the “Middle East Green Initiative” Announced by HRH Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative are the Kingdom’s latest strategies against climate change and the vulnerability of the Middle East, in particular. In line with Vision 2030 and the targets outlined after the virtual Leaders’ Summit on Climate held last April 2021, Saudi Arabia is doing its share in combating the global threat, accounting its contribution as a major oil producer. The aim is to plant 10 billion trees across the Kingdom and 50 billion in the Middle East to reduce global carbon emissions by more than 4% of global contributions, and raise protected areas to more than 30% of total land area. Followed by the Saudi Green Initiative Forum and the Middle East Green Initiative Summit in October, the strategies are an important roadmap for confronting climate change.

Tackling the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic The decisive response to the pandemic, taken by the authorities in Saudi Arabia, led to a steady, low number of cases and high vaccination rate with 63.6% of the population being fully vaccinated,as of November 2021. With some travelling restrictions still in place and with the cooperation of its citizens and residents in abiding with the safety protocols, the country is an example of a swift stance against the disease. The Kingdom’s Ministry of Health has been a stalwart in encouraging everyone to get vaccinated and get the booster dose six to eight months after the second dose. The Kingdom has also allowed the non-wearing of masks in select outdoor places but reiterates the need to wear face masks indoors and still adhere to precautionary measures.

Social perspective With the lifting of some of the restrictions on social gatherings and relaxing the mask usage outdoors, the country is heading back to normal after being one of the strictest states in terms of lockdowns and social distancing. Now, celebrations and gatherings are not only confined at home; friends and families can already meet outside, in restaurants, parks, and even in cinemas. The reopening of the Kingdom for international tourists and large-scale events also followed.

Economic perspective Despite the negative prognosis of the effect of the pandemic on businesses in the Middle East, the economic recovery of the Kingdom is regarded as promising in 2021. The growth of its non-oil GDP is expected to reach 2.8% and is already back to pre-pandemic levels. The diversification efforts related with Vision 2030 objectives are on the way and employment is increasing, especially among the locals, amidst the expat exodus in the Gulf. Due to various business and social reforms, the ease of doing business is improving according to the World Bank charts, and investment spending is on the rise. Regardless of higher VAT, the domestic economy is thriving due to increased consumer spending following the boost in local tourism and the reopening of the country for entertainment and events.

Bringing back the entertainment This year saw the return of the much-awaited events in the country. With achieving a high vaccination rate and making the immune status compulsory for most of the daily activities, the country had relaunched some of the most beloved happenings. One of these is the bigger and better Riyadh Season with thousands of events and activities planned all throughout the city. According to statistics, Riyadh Season recorded around 4.5 million visitors for a month, creating more than 122,000 jobs. Another major event was the hosting of the 2021 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix which took place at the brand-new Jeddah Corniche Circuit. Something to also look forward to is the return of MDLBEAST Soundstorm, the region’s biggest and loudest music festival which will happen on December 16-19, 2021. The event will last for four days and will include 200+ artists on 8 stages.

Domestic travelling became a trend and an indispensable aid for the regional economies - keeping hotels and restaurants fully booked. There’s also a significant increase in issuing licenses for local tour guides and other professions in hospitality. In 2021, a major event for the tourism industry was the opening of the office of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in Riyadh – the first regional office for the Middle East, out of the UNWTO headquarters in Spain. It was inaugurated on the 26th of May, during the Tourism Recovery Summit held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. Developing the Kingdom’s potential in becoming a major tourist destination is an important part of the Vision 2030’s agenda. The UNWTO and NEOM have launched the “Tourism Experiences of the Future” challenge. According to the UNWTO website, this challenge “will source innovative ideas and disruptive business models related to the tourism needs of the future, in line with growing demand for new experiences. The competition is the first national initiative dedicated to identifying new companies that will lead the tourism sector’s transformation in Saudi Arabia.”

Human capital on spotlight

Boosting of local and international tourism After opening for international tourists for the first time in 2019, the hiatus caused by the pandemic was a hard blow on the Kingdom’s image as a travel destination. To cope with the unforeseen situation, the local tourism was boosted equally by the authorities and by citizens and expats, driven by patriotism and curiosity to explore the country.

DQ LIVING MAGAZINE NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2021

Continuing the transformation of the Kingdom on different social levels, Saudi Arabia announced major judicial reforms in 2021, favouring individuals and families. Four draft laws: the Personal Status Law, the Civil Transactions Law, the Penal Code for Discretionary Sanctions, and the Law of Evidence, are under development. Another important reform that is already enforced is the amendments concerning the Kafala system or labor changes for improving the transparency of the market. They are allowing more mobility and freedom for the workers, ensuring their rights are protected. Saudization is also in full swing resulting in a huge boost to local employment. A thriving social environment is important in attracting foreign manpower in a turbulent post-pandemic reality and after an expat exodus throughout the region. It is equally important for prospective investment and business opportunities.

Business is bouncing back Implementing a Regional Headquarters Attraction Program for multinational companies is a bold initiative in transforming the country into a major business hub. During the latest edition of the Future Investment Initiative, 44 international companies from diverse sectors including energy, technology, F&B, consulting, and construction, have received licenses to move their regional headquarters to Riyadh. By year 2030, the program is expected to attract an investment of $18 billion and create thousands of jobs.

Changes in Education Education around the world is still facing disruptions due to the pandemic. Most students in Saudi Arabia just went back to in-person classes, after one full academic year of remote studying.

With 20 TV channels dedicated to distance learning, Saudi Arabia proved to have one of the most effective and centralized programs for virtual learning. Blended learning is the new norm as mentioned by the Minister of Education. UNESCO just praised the “Madrasati” platform as one of the leading and most innovative systems for remote education. Meanwhile, the schooling system is undergoing a reform by implementing the English language earlier and also including the Chinese language in the curriculum. They also opened up for disciplines like critical thinking and more subjects related to music and the arts. The Human Capability Development Program (HCDP), a part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, was announced earlier this year by HRH, Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. According to the Vision 2030 website, “It aims to ensure that citizens have the required capabilities to compete globally by instilling values and developing basic and future skills, as well as enhancing knowledge. The program focuses on developing a solid educational base for all citizens to instill values from an early age, while preparing the youth for the future local and global labor market. It also focuses on upskilling citizens by providing lifelong learning opportunities, supporting innovation and entrepreneurship culture, and developing and activating policies and enablers to ensure KSA competitiveness.” The above-mentioned accomplishments are just some of the highlights of the ongoing year and most of them are long-term strategies which will bear fruits in the near future. With the end of the pandemic still unknown, the world has started to adapt and Saudi Arabia is no exception as the country actively seeks and works for solutions to this unprecedented crisis. The changes this year are truly remarkable and an example of the country’s decisiveness and flexible response to the changing times. From a macroeconomics perspective to leisure and tourism, and in ensuring the wellbeing of its citizens, the Kingdom has made the most out of the crisis, turning it into numerous possibilities. 2021 is certainly just a peek of what Saudi Arabia will be in the coming years. We look forward to what 2022 will bring!

THE BEST PARKS IN THE DQ ZENIA DUELL Photo credit: Hachem Photography

What’s the easiest way to escape the hustle and bustle of our work life in the city? Get back to nature and embrace the great outdoors, especially now that the weather is cool enough to enjoy some fresh air! Lucky for residents and guests of the Diplomatic Quarter, we have our own little pockets of urban zen: parks that are big and small and great for both adults and kids. Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to read or meditate, play sports, stroll with your loved one, have picnics with your friends, or let your kids run around and play, there’s a DQ park for you.

DO

BEST FOR KIDS: ROCK PARK Also known as Richard Bodeker Park, named after the German architect who played an important role in the landscaping of Riyadh, this park has plenty of play areas for children. It has a circular sports court great for playing informal basketball or football. The park is defined by its two huge water towers, a mini replica of Stonehenge, and plenty of beautiful fountains.

BEST FOR PICNICS: AL ARID PARK Al Arid Park boasts plenty of lush, green grass, which makes it the perfect space for setting picnic mats and baskets of food. The covered walkway around the park provides a lovely opportunity to stroll or walk.

BEST FOR EXERCISE: YAMAMAH PARK Yamamah is the DQ’s biggest park, which means that if you walk or jog a couple of laps, you’ve done your daily exercise! The greenery keeps the park nice and cool: another advantage if you’re breaking a sweat with your power walking. You can also join outdoor yoga classes with Anda Mindfulness, which take place on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:00 in the morning.

BEST IN VIEWS: ASSIDR PARK This park overlooks the fabulous wadi trail. The best time to come here is at sunset: you can look out over the city and the wadi below, contemplating the beauty of nature as the sun sets on the other side of Riyadh. It also connects to the walking track of Nafal Garden.

BEST PARK TO VISIT: GENERAL PARK This park is also known as the “Public Park”, considered as the largest park in the DQ: it has a wide area with lots of date trees. While there are no playgrounds or fountains in this garden, it has a lot of opportunities to introduce your kids to the wonders of nature and immerse in them. It has a pond and creek where you can watch the flow of the water and listen to its ripples. The chirping of the birds gives a serene vibe to the popular place.

This winter, grab the chance to get closer to nature and drink in the fresh, cool air of the Diplomatic Quarter’s beautiful parks. The DQ is home to a lot of smaller parks that have different charms and things to offer; no park is the same. Some have lush plants, fountains and sculptures, walkways, ponds, and openings to hiking trails. We suggest adding the following parks and gardens in your visit too: Al Aarudh, Al Ghatha Park, Annafel, and Assarh. Al Khuzama Park is currently the venue of one of Riyadh Season’s zones, The Groves. Be sure to respect other visitors and remember to keep these beautiful parks tidy – take your litter home or dispose of it in the appropriate bins. Nature gives us so much – let's give her some love in return! DQ LIVING MAGAZINE

ommunity markets or bazaars are one of the things that were few in Riyadh years ago. Then the DQ Market happened in 2019. It offered a chance for small businesses to introduce their shops and products to a discerning audience. In turn, visitors enjoyed getting to know locally-produced, handmade, and home-cooked products that they have never known or tried. This year, in the times of a pandemic, DQ Market is open again offering hope that things are going back to normal. The vibrant mix of textures, tastes, and aromas are intoxicating; there are just so many things to see and try and taste, from fresh fruits and vegetables to indoor and outdoor plants to unique accessories to delicious food and beverages! The DQ Market every Saturday reveals a more authentic side of the DQ, and of Riyadh. The DQ Living magazine team experienced the DQ Market community last November by having a stall. It was a fun experience meeting people from all walks of life. We were able to introduce the magazine and meet regular readers. Like us, many vendors in the DQ market find the diverse audience of the market inspiring. Here are some of the businesses we found in the DQ Market. Get to know them and visit their stalls next Saturday!

SYNERGY ART HUB

@synergy_art_hub / +966550301103 Office 421, Tower 4, Almousa Center, Olaya Main Street, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Synergy Art Hub started in 2015 as a group of five multicultural female artists. The group grew and now, over 20 artists exhibit their art locally and internationally. They launched the hub to make a creative space for art lovers and offer art and sculpture workshops. Synergy artists use various innovative medium like resin to create their masterpieces and their products are sold from SR 50 to SR 1500 exclusively at the DQ Market.

ROMA’S GARDEN

@romasgarden_ksa Roma’s Garden is an online store specializing in terrarium glass gardens and indoor plants. It started last year and their price ranges from SR 150 to SR 800. There’s far more to these glass gardens: they’re not only beautiful but they also recreate the magical world of tropical rainforests. DQ Market customers get special discounts as Roma’s Garden offers these tiny microcosms at a more affordable SR 99 to SR 650. They consider joining the DQ Market as one of their best decisions; they love giving people information and knowledge on terrariums.

RESINART

@resinartsaa / +966552632167 12482 King Abdullah Street, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Muhammad Al-Mudaifer, owner of ResinArt, has a passion for wood and artwork. What started as a hobby has brought about a decoration business in 2017. Resin was still new to the Saudi market during that time but the flexibility and versatility of the material helped the development of unique products. Saudi artists carry out the works on the furniture and decors; casting and polishing resin with different degrees of color create one-of-a-kind masterpieces. ResinArt has joined events like the Diriyah Season. The DQ market brings them unique, discerning customers who are considered as pioneers of the DQ.

FEATURE

A Storyteller: Camilla Unger

A discussion with the Norwegian writer and author of children’s books ALEXANDER WOODMAN

C

amilla Unger, a Norwegian children's book writer in DQ, launched a mission of writing children's books that fascinated readers with educating, charming, humorous, and uplifting narratives and illustrations. As a result of positive reviews, Camilla has released a series of books about Mia and Mons adventures. In recent years, Mrs. Unger has been working on a fantasy novel. Mrs. Unger holds a Master's Degree in Literature and has also worked within book publishing. An inspiration of writing books came as an opportunity during her travels. In addition, for the last seven years, Mrs. Unger has been working at the National arena that mainly focuses on folk music and folk dance in Oslo. Camilla Unger, as the wife of the Norwegian Ambassador H.E. Thomas Lid Ball, recently arrived in Saudi Arabia, where she aspires to find new venues of inspiration to write. Mrs. Unger also anticipates collaborating with Saudi musicians in folk music performances common for Saudi and Norwegian cultures. As a child, what was your favorite book or story? Why? I read a lot as a child and often went to the library to get more books. Astrid Lindgren was one of my favorite authors and there are especially two books that had a big impact on me when I was younger: Mio my Mio and The Brothers Lionheart. Two other books that also meant a lot to me are Erik Linklater’s The Wind on the Moon and Richard Adams’s Watership Down. Both are a mix of fantasy, the fantastic and reality. I like to think that there is a lot of

28

that mix in the real world as well. However, sometimes we must look a little bit harder to see and realize that it is to be found in real life as well, because it is not as obvious as in the stories. What makes you passionate and inspired about writing children's books? What kind of truths… If any have you uncovered for yourself while writing for children and would like to pass the next generation? The five books I have written are about a grandmother and her two grandchildren, Mia and Mons. The stories revolve around the relationship between the three of them. And this is a grandmother with a lot of funny ideas and who loves to play. All five books include small adventures and two of the books are slightly based on old fairy tales. My stories are about how meeting a grandmother is like going on a different kind of journey and therefore other things will happen. A grandmother does not have to be responsible for good behavior, upbringing and going to bed at the right time. She can move a little bit outside the box – so to speak. I also write my books so that they will be easy to read out loud. When and how was the idea revealed of writing a book series dedicated to Mia and her adventures? What inspired you? I always wanted to write books for children. When my husband got posted at the embassy in Pretoria, I was happy to move. This gave me the opportunity to see if I could manage to write a good story. My first and foremost inspi-

ration are my children, so I decided to write a story about two siblings at the same age as my own children. I gave them the names Mia and Mons. The kindergarten that both my children went to was also an inspiration. So, I decided that the first story would play out exactly there. Parts of the first book happened for real. Of course, not in the same dramatic way. Children are often fascinated by the pictures. Can you discuss and share the importance of illustrations in your books as a means of interaction between stories, pictures, and children? After I finished my first text, me and my publisher started to discuss who could be a good match to illustrate my books. There are so many different styles and one of my favorite illustrators happens to be my own sister-in-law, Solveig Lid Ball. Solveig is a storyteller with her pictures and manages with her illustrations to put more layers into a story. We must remember that children only hear the stories read out loud. And they will make the story out of what they hear and what they at the same time see in the pictures. The interaction between the story and the text is therefore more than important. And the details will give the children the chance of hearing the same story repeatedly - the repetition that children love - but at the same the story will appear a little bit different. How do you ensure that the stories you are writing make a difference? I do not think my stories will make a difference in the traditional meaning of the world. What is important to me is to show that there is a little bit of magic in life as it is. And that we all can be a part of making that magic. I also want to show how important it is for different ages and generations to play together, and that playing is an essential part of communicating with children. You have been traveling and recently arrived in Saudi Arabia, how does the newness affect your writing? How do you envision your activity as an author in Saudi Arabia? Right now, I am writing a fantasy novel that I have been working on for some time. This is a novel of around 250 pages, and in that sense something totally different from what I am used to, but this story also has a mix between

DQ LIVING MAGAZINE

fantasy and the regular world that we live in. When I am done with this story, I hope to go back to write a new book about Mia and Mons. There I will have the opportunity to use some of my new experiences from Saudi Arabia. Maybe I can send Mia and Mons on a vacation with the whole family, and here they can go for a sightseeing in the desert? This could make an exciting beginning of many different adventures. In addition to writing books, you have worked at a folk music concert scene. How do you plan to use this experience in Saudi Arabia? The last seven years I have been working at the National arena/scene that stages mainly folk music and folk dance in Oslo. Folk music and folk dance are widespread in Norway and have roots that go way back. I understand that there is also a tradition for folk music here in Saudi Arabia as well. For example, Oud is an instrument that we have in common. I am hoping we can arrange for some folk musicians to come over, maybe for our national day to preform, show what our folk music is all about. After all, folk music is also all about storytelling.

T

he Greek word ‘Meraki’ is defined as an act of doing something from your soul, with creativity, and love. A name aptly chosen by a group of restaurateurs determined to share their passion for Greek cuisine to the world. The first Meraki restaurant opened in London under the patronage of the Waney family - known as the proprietors behind popular restaurant brands such as Zuma, Roka, La Petite Maison, and Coya. For them, Riyadh felt like the natural stepping stone to discover Saudi Arabia as hundreds of other restaurants from around the world are now coming here. Leading the team in Riyadh is Mr. Olivier Eynard, Director and Co-Founder of Meraki. His career highlights include working with legendary chefs such as Roger Verge, Gaston Lenotre, and Paul Bocuse. He was also the Global Operations Director for La Petite Maison and Director International Expansion for the Arts Club. He is joined by Athinagoras Kostakos, Chef Patron of Meraki and helped develop its food concept; Executive Chef, Nikitas Pirgis; and Head Chef, Dmitrios Koumis. They are all natives of Greece with in-depth knowledge and experience in elevating Greek food. Mr. Olivier Eynard, Director and Co-Founder of Meraki

Their cocktail selection lists an unprecedented number of ingredients such as basil, grapefruit syrup, star anise, and even ‘sea salt caviar foam’ just to name a few. The descriptions of the drinks are intriguing enough for us to try and discover. No proof grapes and bubbles from Spain and France are also available to complement your meal. For the sharing mezzes, the Beef Gyros and Tacos is a classic choice, along with the Saganaki Cheese Bites made with fried mastelo cheese, tomato chutney, and pistachio. After having opened last March, they were pleasantly surprised with how their menu has been received so far - with the signature meraki fish and seafood dishes being the most popular choices for guests. “We have the same dish in London but here, the proportion of people ordering it is a lot, lot more. So that’s really interesting.” says Mr. Olivier Eynard. Their main menu includes oven-baked turbot, sea bream fillet, and their bestseller: the salt-crusted whole sea bass - all are flown in directly from Greece and Spain three to four times a week.

ble to taste and the Smoked Aubergine with tahini and spiced yogurt left us wanting more. The Pastitsio is an indulgent dish made of Paccheri pasta, beef ragu, graviera cream, and topped with fresh black truffle. On the plate, it looked simple yet intricate and it delivered highly on flavor and satiety. The star of the evening was certainly the salt-crusted whole sea bass. From its flamboyant presentation of a “fish on fire” - the staff showed us a large plate with a bed of salt bearing flames. Moments later, they unearthed the fish from the crust, and slathered it with a zesty lemon-herb dressing with a side of kale. The fish was exquisite at every bite - fresh, meaty, and moist - and despite the huge serving, we managed to finish its entirety. We now truly understand why this is their best seller.

As we wait for dessert, we take in the cozy and spacious ambiance of the restaurant that was designed to depict the minimal and picturesque aesthetic of the Aegean islands of Cyclades. The large open windows provide a garden view of Al Faisaliah Hotel’s greenery and the decor in beige and white keeps the look chic and clean. The elevated portion of the restaurant is a great spot for those seeking an intimate dining experience as it is more private and secluded. However, the main floor is where the larger tables and views are best for those wanting to celebrate with a group. Mr. Eynard is looking to constantly adjust the restaurant’s menu and atmosphere as needed, “A menu is never static. It needs to change and update all the time. Of course, there will always be the classics. But new items keep

For us, things were already working very well from where we were seated, especially as our desserts arrived. The Pavlova was a sheer delight to our palates, with its light meringue sticks and refreshing combination of homemade vanilla ice cream infused with basil and just the right amount of sweet strawberry sauce. The soft-baked cinnamon cookie was a warm dessert that was paired with dates ice cream - a complement to the hot espresso I was sipping it with. At the moment, Meraki Riyadh is intent on establishing its brand as the premier choice for Greek and Mediterranean dining. Mr. Eynard professes, “We’re focused on making Meraki Riyadh a success. We want to make sure that people want to go back to our restaurant. And that if they are thinking about where to go out for a nice dinner, Meraki comes into their mind.” After our experience there, we’re sure to remember that.

things interesting.” With that in mind, they have recently launched a special lobster menu every Monday highlighting a variety of recipes such as lobster giouvetsi, lobster tacos, and lobster rolls. To enhance the vibe, they are also adding in a DJ section for live music every Wednesday to Sunday evenings. “It’s a natural evolution of a restaurant to upgrade the look and feel. We always find the areas that need tweaking and work on them.”

3 Favorite Winter Destinations in Saudi Arabia PARIS VERRA

RECOMMEND is a new feature in the DQ Living Magazine where we ask your favorite influencers on their “top 3” on various topics that are relevant to you. For this issue, we ask @parisverra, a travel photographer from the US now based in KSA with over 160,000 followers in Instagram, her top 3 places in Saudi Arabia where the cool winter season can be best enjoyed.

AlUla My absolute favorite winter destination in Saudi Arabia is AlUla; to avoid the summer heat and be able to fully embrace and explore the most beautiful, vast desert during these winter months. I love driving around Hegra in the old Land Rovers and watching the sunset at Elephant Rock. Be sure to visit Old Town for dinner and see the beautiful Maraya Mirrored Concert Hall. But what really makes AlUla so special is the locals and the culture alongside the beautiful, unique scenery. They will make you feel at home, and trust me - you’ll never want to leave. I recommend spending at least a minimum of 3 days in AlUla. Be sure to book your tickets for Hegra on ExperienceAlUla. com ahead of time. Shaden Resort is a nice option for accomodation. Otherwise, a more exquisite resort-like option is Habitas. Or if you’re an adventurer like me, opt for bringing your tent and finding somewhere to camp.

RECOMMEND

Red Sea: Umluj / Al Wajh The winter weather makes for a perfect beach day along the Red Sea Coast. There are tons of places, such as Jeddah, to enjoy a nice beach or boat day. However, my favorite spot is Al Wajh. Al Wajh is a close neighbor to the more well-known area of Umluj. Both are equally as beautiful and still feel so untouched. What makes this place so special is how crystal clear and blue the water is, and how vibrant the coral reefs are. Imagine the Maldives, but in Saudi Arabia. In both of these towns, go to the marina area and inquire about a boat tour from the locals or plan ahead and find a tour guide to set one up for you.

Asir: Al Soudah and Rijal Almaa If you really enjoy cold weather, head to the Asir region. This is where you will find cooler weather all-year-round in Saudi. Take a visit or hike Al Soudah Mountain to find yourself above the clouds. In the afternoon, drive to Rijal Almaa to see the colorful villages where you will experience the rich Saudi culture. This region is so unique and special to me because I never imagined Saudi to have a cold and mountainous destination. I recommend spending a few days in the area to hike and camp, wearing a flower crown just like the Flowermen of Rijal Almaa, and enjoying the cafes and restaurants in the city of Abha at night.

Top Family-Friendly Restaurants in Riyadh NANA NEDELJKOVIC

Gorgeous winter weather has arrived in Riyadh and it’s all the more enjoyable for the family to go out and discover a few delectable restaurants! Here is our list of family-friendly dining spaces in the city that offers something for everyone.

I

t can be challenging to choose a restaurant that has something good for adults and at the same time has something fun to offer for children, the most discerning food critics. You’d be surprised at the number of restaurants and cafes in Riyadh that take into consideration the likes of every member of a family. Take a look at some of them; we made the choices easy for you.

The Instagramable One: Greem Café

The Zone, Al Takhassousi, Al Mohammadiyyah, Riyadh 12362 @greemksa The one to impress teens and adults alike, Greem Café is a black and white comic dream, like something out of an 80s A-ha video or a magical book. Everything is black and white, from the entrance piano to the bookcases and tables and chairs. When you take a break from all the photo taking, you can enjoy the carefully chosen dishes like Saffron Risotto and desserts like Pistachio Cream-Filled Pavlova. Try to take your eyes off the decor to eat.

LIST

The Sci-fi Server: The Mansion

Prince Muhammad Ibn Abd Al Aziz, Al Olaya, Riyadh 12331 @themansion_sa This one should come with a warning - there will be lots of excited shrieks. Greeted at the door by our waiter who - wait for it - is a robot, this family-friendly restaurant serves to impress. The kids were entertained and even got a chance to interact with the ‘server’. The lunch consisting of Gourmet Sliders for the kids, Arabic breakfast for the adults (fresh bagels included) and a fresh healthy salad was polished off in seconds while the Rose Petal Cake made sure that the feast was finished on a sweet, high note. The robot waiter was thanked with plenty of hugs and promises that we will see him soon again.

The Traditional Treat: Najd Village Al Olaya, Riyadh 11564 @najdvillagesa

It is a must to eat an authentic Arabic feast in a traditional setting in Saudi Arabia and if you can do it with your family and friends seated comfortably in rugs on the floor in an entire room, all the better. Najd Village offers camel meat, delectable kabsa, freshly-baked bread, and mouthwatering desserts that are sure to fill everyone with hearty meals. Share these meals with heartwarming stories and you’re all set for the night. A family can choose and occupy a room with a private fireplace that can be the perfect setting to celebrate occasions. Truly, dinners at Najd Village is an unforgettable family affair.

The Party Place: Catch 22

The Zone, Al Mohammadiyyah, Riyadh 12362 @catch22.me From the moment you walk into this contemporary diner, you will be blown away with its imaginative décor and attention to details - it is truly a delight. There is a family photo booth where you can take pictures complete with silly accessories, fun graffiti and interactive installations, and don’t even get us started on the food. The children’s meals are served in toy machine trucks, the milkshakes come covered in donuts, the Dynamite Shrimps and Burgers are faves. The Oldie but Still a Goodie: Piatto

Northern Ring Branch Rd, Al Maseef 13312, Riyadh 11464 @piattoksa A solid family favorite with branches all around Riyadh, Piatto has really established itself as a quintessential family restaurant. While the parents are transported to the middle of Italy with the freshest ingredients and the relaxed ambiance, the children are kept busy making their own pizza from scratch and watching it cook in huge stone ovens. In the end, there are lots of dough covered hands, big smiles and messy fare finished off by multiple servings of creamy Italian gelato. What more is there to say? With school holidays looming and the Riyadh season in full swing we hope that these suggestions inspire you to discover new eateries, go on foodie adventures, and create memories. There is nothing better than bonding with families and friends through food. DQ LIVING MAGAZINE

Finland Embassy Hosts Jazz Night ALEXANDER WOODMAN

A

mbassador of Finland H.E. Antti Rytövuori and his wife Mrs. Minna Luoma hosted a jazz performance evening featuring talented Finnish singer Anna Inginmaa and guitarist Veikki Virkajärvi. Representatives of the foreign missions and the DQ community were warmly welcomed to enjoy the Groovy Night filled with music, interactions, and good memories. H.E. Antti Rytövuori introduced the artists known as the young jazz force in Finland, promoting Finnish culture, music, and art. Anna Inginmaa runs her jazz club in the Vernissa Culture House, Vantaa, and tours around Finland with her band, while Veikki Virkajärvi has graduated from the Sibelius Academy jazz department, one of the largest music academies in Europe. The Sibelius Academy is the cornerstone of the Finnish music culture through its teaching, research, and work. During our discussion, when I asked Mrs. Minna Luoma about the inspiration for organizing a jazz evening at the Embassy, she mentioned that the idea was revealed to H.E. Rytövuori and herself last summer in Finland when she heard Anna’s live performance at a friend's birthday party. “I heard her songs on the radio, but the live performance gave me an opportunity to better understand her unique talent. After her performance, I introduced myself and mentioned that I live in Riyadh. We started to discuss that maybe she should visit Saudi Arabia and perform. Then I sent my husband a couple of videos that I recorded and asked his opinion.” Ambassador Rytövuori was very supportive of the idea. Accompanied by guitarist Veikki Virkajärvi, Anna Inginmaa performed jazz music that shows glimpses of her passion. Her song’s themes include rootlessness, tension of intima-

cy and hidden realms beneath the surface of humans. With her soulful songs and unique interpretations of life, Anna Inginmaa invited guests to penetrate into the depth of her reality, filled with the melodic sounds of jazz and soul. During the interview, when I asked about the message she wanted to convey through her music, she underlined the importance of hope, "I think the only thing we need at this critical time for the world is hope. I want to spread positive energy through my music.” This was the first visit of Anna Inginmaa and Veikki Virkajärvi to Saudi Arabia, which brought them positive impressions and great feelings.

The Philippine Embassy Stages Art Exhibit on Filipino–Saudi Culture

O

n November 26, 2021, the Philippine Embassy organized an art exhibit called “Kulay Pinay” at the Cultural Palace, Diplomatic Quarter, Riyadh. The exhibit was held in collaboration with the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, the Riyadh Ambassadors’ Chorale, and eight promising Filipina artists based in Riyadh. Members of the diplomatic corps, the Saudi art community, and social media influencers attended the event. The featured Riyadh-based Filipina artists are Leslie Ann Fiestan, Chelsea Perez-Ambray, Danielle Baldono, Vianca Cabigting, Erika Cadiz, Christine Dimaculangan, Iris Yvonne Felongco, and Stefi Anne Laron. In less than two years since the Kingdom allowed foreigners to participate in local art exhibits, these pioneering Pinays have already joined in various local and international shows, garnering attention from both local and global news outlets, and winning awards.

44

A total of forty-eight paintings were showcased. As part of their repertoire, the artists depicted Filipino culture and heritage; they also conveyed their appreciation for Saudi culture and tradition through their art work. A couple of the artists also conducted live painting demonstrations during the event. In his opening remarks, Ambassador Adnan V. Alonto emphasized the purpose of cultural diplomacy, to entice public interest in Filipino art and culture, while strengthening ties between the Philippines and Saudi Arabia. The Embassy’s art exhibition was one of the major cultural events held in Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is part of a series of cultural diplomacy activities initiated by the Embassy to present Filipino workers as artists and provide them suitable platforms to share their art and voice to uplift the image of the Philippines and Filipinos in the Kingdom.

Danish Food Circle Promotes Organic and Healthy Food ALEXANDER WOODMAN

T

ogether with the Danish Agriculture & Food Council, the Royal Danish Embassy hosted the Danish Food Circle Event. Danish companies Bangs, Danæg, HK Scan, Orana, DAVA Foods, Good Foods Group, SKOV, global leaders in providing safe, healthy food of high quality, displayed their products and offered degustation. This initiative has enabled Danish manufacturers to share their expertise in food production, distribution, and processing with the Saudi market representatives as one of the largest and potentially most dynamic and fastest-growing consumer markets in the Middle East. Opening remarks were delivered by the Ambassador of Denmark, H.E. Ole M. Moesby, who underlined that the Danish food industry is a frontrunner in sustainability and efficiency. The Ambassador brought the example of a public-private partnership sharing the fundamental belief that collaboration is a source of empowerment in which new ideas are created and innovation occurs. "Danish sectors have a unique ability to unite competencies and collaborate across private companies, organizations, academia, and public authorities. The success of the Danish model of collaboration is illustrated in the organic sector – a result of the high standards and a solid partnership and interaction between producers, organizations, and public authorities," mentioned H.E. Moesby. Denmark holds a reputation as a world leader in organic production. As a result, organic products have a more significant share of the retail market in Denmark than anywhere else globally, and consumption is growing every year. As new trends have influenced the interests and tastes of consumers, Danish gastronomy has undergone a rapid change in recent decades, offering healthy, respon-

sibly produced, and delicious food. Nowadays, Denmark is among the world's gastronomic giants, with a growing number of Michelin stars. Denmark has 38 Michelin stars shared among 27 restaurants. "The Danish food circle is driven by high ambitions about health, quality, and safety, a collaborative approach in all aspects, and the aim of sustainability. It is facilitated through the Danish innovative spirit and technology," concluded the Ambassador. Denmark fights against food loss and waste by offering innovative products, solutions, and technologies with the ultimate goal of producing healthier food while minimizing environmental impact. The high quality and safety in the food circle are important strongholds of the Danish food cluster, ensuring traceability and transparency in the food value chain. As a result, Denmark leads the way towards healthier food.

Bangladesh Embassy Observes Armed Forces Day

T

he Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh observed Armed Forces Day 2021 on November 21, 2021 by paying homage to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyrs of the liberation war in 1971. On the occasion of the day, a reception program was arranged by the mission's defense wing at Bangabandhu Square of the Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh. Major General Daifullah Bin Muhammad Al Garni from Saudi Ministry of Defense was the chief guest at the event while Ambassadors, Defense attachés, and diplomats from other missions also attended the program. Bangladeshi expatriates living in Saudi Arabia and Embassy officials also attended the reception. Bangladesh Ambassador Dr. Mohammad Javed Patwary BPM (Bar) welcomed the guests at the event accompanied by Deputy Chief of Mission Abul Hasan Mridha and Defense Attaché Brig. Gen. Sayeed Siddiki. To mark the day, in his speech, Ambassador Dr. Javed Patwary has said that on this day in 1971, combined forces of Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force took a ceremonious birth and launched a concerted effort to put down the occupation army and finally achieved victory on 16th December 1971. Although November 21, 1971 is marked to be the raising day of the Bangladesh armed forces, the Bengali members of army, navy, and air force conducted operations in their respective domains against the occupation forces from March 26, 1971. Ambassador Dr. Javed Patwary said that Bangladesh is committed to promote global peace and stability. Keeping this end in view, Bangladesh Armed Forces have been taking part in the UN Peacekeeping Operations since 1988.

46

Footprints of Bangladeshi peacekeepers are evident in almost all the troubled areas of the world, starting from Haiti to East Timor and from Georgia to Namibia. He recalled with deep gratitude the 159 soldiers and officers who lost their lives during peacekeeping operations under the UN mandate. He also stated that the Armed Forces of both Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia enjoy a great deal of trust and confidence and Bangladesh is also a proud member of Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC). By mentioning the current economic progress of Bangladesh, the Ambassador said, “We can work with the Kingdom to materialize the Saudi Vision 2030 with new engagement and cooperation in many sectors including cooperation in the defense area. We hope to see stronger and robust bilateral ties with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the coming days in all areas,” he said.

THE DOCTOR IS IN Your common questions on eye and dental-related health problems answered by Dr. Aliaa Azzat (Consultant Ophthalmologist) and Dr. Farah Khan (Head of Dental Hygiene Department) at the Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Medical Center – Diplomatic Quarter. What are the procedures to be taken when undergoing LASIK surgery? What are its pros and cons? Refractive corneal surgeries are a wide range of elective procedures with variable techniques that aim to reshape corneal surface to correct the common refractive errors: myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. This is best done to patients who wish to get rid of glasses and contact lenses. When considering corneal refractive surgeries, complete history and full eye examination is needed. In addition, preLASIK work up is requested: corneal topography, that is a detailed imaging of corneal thickness, curvature, and certain details of its front and back surfaces, and a special refraction by an optometrist which may require dilating drops. The visit to a refractive surgeon and work up aims at excluding contraindications to and selecting the most suitable refractive procedure depending on the patient's age and needs. If a patient is correctly selected and is compliant to his/her meds, the procedure is mostly safe with a small percentage requiring repeated/redo surgery at a variable time post-surgery. The most common undesirable effect is dry eye syndrome. What are the reasons for having dry eyes? What can we do to prevent it? There are many. Most popular are dry weather, changing climates as in traveling, exposure to dust, smoke, air currents, staying in outdoor areas especially in the desert and in farms, taking certain medications like the ones used for acne treatment and glaucoma drops, having allergic skin, nose, and eyes, autoimmune disease like hypothyroidism and rheumatoid arthritis, and also some systemic chronic conditions like diabetes mellitus and chronic/recurrent eyes and eyelids diseases and inflammations. Prevention depends on the reason if preventable, and treatment is mostly dependent on the severity of symptoms. The condition is chronic and symptoms vary widely from a person to another and from time to time. If a person is not a candidate for LASIK, are there other procedures that they can undergo to improve their vision? First, other reasons for poor corrected vision must be ruled out and managed, like diabetic retinal disease. In such cases, corneal refractive surgeries are not performed. In DQ LIVING MAGAZINE

NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2021

case corneal refractive surgeries are not suitable, there are other intraocular refractive surgeries like implanting a lens in-front of the patient’s normal lens in younger age groups or clear lens exchange with another special lens type in the presbyopic age group. All these procedures have their specific indications and contraindications and are highly dependent on the patient’s needs and the surgeon’s preference. What can we do to improve our eye health? Take care of the general health, especially through good nutrition and hydration, control underlying chronic diseases especially diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia, and control autoimmune and rheumatological diseases. Be sure to have an annual eye check-up especially for diabetic patients. It is highly advisable to check eye vision for children at the age of 4 even when there are no complaints to detect and correct refractive errors and other reasons for amblyopia. It is also very important to protect eyes from environmental factors with UV shield in quality sunglasses and work-related accidents by using protective eye shields. DENTAL-RELATED HEALTH QUESTIONS: How often do we need to have our teeth checked in a year? What are some tips that you can give us to protect our teeth? You need to visit your dentist once a year to check the condition of your teeth and gums. Make sure to brush twice a day and floss at least once a day to protect your teeth. What are the early signs that someone has a gum problem? How do we improve our gums if it’s already infected? The early signs that someone has a gum problem is if the gums are puffy, swollen, red, and bleeding. Visit your Oral Hygienist twice a year and follow oral hygiene protocol at home. Do we have to remove our wisdom teeth? When is the best time to remove it? It requires proper assessment. What’s the best way to whiten teeth? Is there a procedure that we can avail at the medical center? Whitening the teeth depends from patient to patient. We need to assess you first to know what procedure needs to be done.

Tell us about yourself. I was born and grew up in the north of England as the youngest of four children. Due to my father's work, we moved around every few years and I think this sparked my travel habit. I am married to Nicky who is also a teacher and we have two amazing boys, Laith and Jack. Having worked in Jeddah, Qatar, New York, London, and Riyadh, I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity, through teaching, to travel and see many amazing countries and meet interesting people. How would family and friends describe you? Most people come to the conclusion quite quickly that I can't sit still for very long. I have had a lifelong passion for sports although previous injuries and old age are frustrating me at the moment. I have played rugby, football, athletics, cricket, and even completed a few triathlons over the years. Perhaps it is this energy that helps me to drive for constant improvement at King Faisal School which has grown from strength to strength in recent years. Who or what have been the strongest influences in your life? My own and extended family have all influenced my life. I had a very happy childhood growing up in Leeds and every day I hope to build a strong future for my own children. For sure, living and working in Saudi Arabia and other countries has broadened my horizons and given me knowledge that I have learned from to hopefully make good decisions. Professionally, I regularly think about Sir Ken Robinson and his TED Talk "Schools Kill Creativity" which helped frame my leadership of schools for the benefit of students.

What brought you to Riyadh? A large part of my career and life had been spent in international settings and I really enjoy traveling, meeting interesting people from different backgrounds, and learning about other cultures and ways of life. Having spent seven years back in the UK following fifteen years of life as an expat, I began to get 'itchy feet' for the international lifestyle. After my first conversation with the King Faisal Foundation, I saw the potential of King Faisal School and was excited to be part of its continuing improvement. What led you to your career and how has Saudi Arabia helped you in your career goals? I grew up in a family of teachers. I am the youngest of my siblings with three older sisters, two of whom are teachers and I always enjoyed school as a child. It was an easy and natural progression to study Education at Birmingham University and head into teaching. In 1996, after three years teaching in an inner-city setting, my wife (also a teacher) and I accepted our second jobs at Jeddah Prep and Grammar School. We had eight wonderful years there and grew as teachers and developed a much more global view of the world. Life in Jeddah opened our eyes to lots of new experiences and as a 'thank you' to the Kingdom, we gave our first-born son an Arabic name, Laith. What are you most proud of accomplishing so far? Fatherhood, my children never cease to amaze me, sometimes even in a good way! What do you like most about the DQ? I like the family feel and the people. Everyone has welcomed me very graciously. Whether it's through work or socially here in the DQ, people have been extremely generous and happy to help. What is something you wish the DQ had, but currently doesn’t? Perhaps one or two community leisure facilities, especially indoor ones, would help individuals and families by providing swimming pools, playing courts or yoga rooms for yearround enjoyment for residents. Along with the opportunities it would provide for our own physical and mental wellbeing, it could provide spaces for coaching children and a coffee shop for parents to watch and socialize. Any tips/recommendations/advice for your DQ neighbors? Try everything, at least once!
