RIYADH: Capital of Adventures BY NOEMI OSQUIZA
At the forefront of Saudi Arabia’s change is Riyadh, the Kingdom’s capital and home to more than six million people. Riyadh is a bustling metropolis that offers various activities that locals and expats from different walks of life, ages, and interests, will find worthwhile. Here are the top 10 must-visit places in Riyadh for those who want to chill, step back in time, seek thrills, or go on adventures.
FOR THE CHILL-SEEKER
Riyadh literally translates to “gardens” however what blossomed wee skyscrapers and unique architectures that serve as the city’s landmarks. Most of these are situated along King Fahad Road and three of the must-visit buildings in Riyadh are just walking distances from each other. KINGDOM TOWER One of the most iconic landmarks in Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom Tower or Mamlaka Tower is tagged as “the necklace” of Riyadh due to its unusual apex. A one-stop destination, Kingdom Tower houses a shopping mall, a five-star hotel, various restaurants and food stalls, an observation bridge, and the world’s tallest mosque on its 77th floor. Avid shoppers can find the most luxurious brands in the Kingdom Center while first-timers and visitors in Riyadh can ascend to the Skybridge and see the city from up above. They say that you haven’t been to Riyadh if you haven’t been to the Skybridge. AL-FAISALIAH TOWER One can’t help but stop and stare at the “jewel of Riyadh” standing tall in the city’s horizon. Al-Faisaliah Tower is the first skyscraper built in Saudi Arabia in 2000. It has a fivestar deluxe hotel, exclusive restaurants, shopping mall, offices, and a one-of-a kind viewing platform. This architectural delight could be more appreciated from The Globe Restaurant atop the tower. Enjoy an open-air view deck at The Experience where you can feel the breeze and watch the sky and the city’s vibrant scenery reflected in the sphere’s mirror. KING FAHAD NATIONAL LIBRARY Standing as the city’s “cultural lighthouse”, King Fahad National Library is one of Riyadh’s most important urban development and cultural projects. Its unique geometric exterior makes it truly one-of-a-kind and has won many awards in the field of architecture. The filigree texture façade featuring traditional Middle Eastern architectural patterns help in the cooling of the building allowing air and natural lighting in place without consuming much energy. A wide park is situated just outside the library where friends and family can enjoy picnics, especially on a good weather.
9
AL-BUJAIRI DISTRICT Old meets new when one enters the Al-Bujairi District, the gateway to historical Diriyah. Situated within the royal family’s original hometown, the Bujairi Quarter of Diriyah is located 12 miles northwest of central Riyadh overlooking the eastern edge of Wadi Hanifah. This place celebrates the Saudi culture and heritage by highlighting local traditional ambience while mingling with contemporary theme. A destination for those who wants to immerse in an authentic Najd heritage experience, visitors can enjoy the view of the old Diriyah skyline while roaming the beautifully-landscaped gardens complete with waterways and fountains or wander around the square appreciating the structures built in Najd architecture.
FOR THE CULTURE VULTURE
The best way to fully appreciate Saudi Arabia is to revisit its past and take a trip to its museums, galleries, and heritage village. NATIONAL MUSEUM Time-traveling is made possible when visiting one of the largest museums in the Middle East, Riyadh’s National Museum. A cultural landmark that is distinguished for its comprehensive exhibits that highlight Saudi’s history and culture, relive and learn the country’s history with its impressive collection of old handicrafts, historical artifacts, and antiquities. The exhibits are categorized into 8 halls starting from the creation of the universe right up to the unification of modern Saudi Arabia. Each hall takes visitors on a journey and for just SR 10 entrance fee per person, it’s one journey worth going to. AL-MASMAK FORT Considered as the birthplace of the modern Saudi nation, Al-Masmak Fort is a must-visit destination. This well-preserved clay and mud-brick castle is the actual place where the young King Abdulaziz Al-Saud bravely led a battle to regain control of Riyadh on January 1902. This paved the way to consolidate the different provinces that make up the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Nowadays, this magnificent citadel features photo galleries and a collection of historical artifacts such as weapons and armors and a small theatre that shows a short film that dramatically recreates and captures the feel of that historical event.

FOR THE ADVENTURE FANS
People outside Saudi Arabia may think that living in the Kingdom is boring. Little did they know that this country is not only rich with oil and minerals, but also blessed with natural beauty where exciting activities take place. RED SAND The scarlet dune of Red Sand located in Northeastern Riyadh is one of the most popular weekend destinations in the capital. Witness the dramatic effect of the sunrise gleaming on the sand dunes when visiting this place early in the morning. Quad bikes are available for rent at affordable prices so people can traverse the vast desert and enjoy a thrilling desert adventure. The cinematic landscape could also be admired while strolling around or just simply laying on the soft sand. It has become a favorite among expatriates due to its accessibility and Instagram-worthy topography.
AIN HEET CAVE One of Riyadh’s greatest surprises is a natural wonder that holds a gift deep within. Ain Heet Cave is situated in the face of Mount Al Jubayl in Wadi Al Sulay, a 40-km drive from Riyadh’s city center. The entrance of the cave resembles the shape of an eye, thus the name “Ain”, which literally translates to "eye". The entrance looks scary from the outside and the descent to its interior chambers is a treacherous task due to the steep hike and loose rocks. However, you will be rewarded with an underground lake when you successfully reach the bottom. The depth of the pool is 30 meters and makes it a perfect spot for a dip and cave diving.
HIDDEN CANYON Mother nature has tucked away a gorgeous destination 130 km away from Riyadh’s city center. Millions of years ago, numerous tectonic activities have cut deep into the earth’s surface over a long period of time and the water pressure from a running river created a deep, narrow channel that has formed an amazing gorge in the middle of the Saudi desert. It is now popularly known as “The Hidden Canyon”. A two-hour drive to Al-Dulum is worth it once its sublime beauty has come to sight. The turquoise waters running down the deep ravine entices everyone to swim, and the escarpment that has been sculpted by earth’s forces will amaze everyone. EDGE OF THE WORLD An expedition that would complete a Khaliji escapade is a hike to the majestic “Edge of the World” that has attracted travelers from around the globe. It is not just a must-visit place in Riyadh but also in the entire Gulf. Approximately 180 km northeast of Riyadh, the two-hour drive to this amazing destination is a rough journey but you will be rewarded with the most amazing views! A trek through the escarpment will lead to a rock-framed “window” that bestows a magnificent panoramic view of the infinite plains and valleys below the 300-meter colossal cliffs. Different wild bird species flying above, various desert insects crawling on the ground, and raw mineral deposits complement this nature trip. Surprisingly, fossilized corals are also abundant in the vicinity for the entirety of the place was once submerged in the ocean waters over 50 million years ago. While most people are busy exploring other parts of the world. It is high time to discover the beauty of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. After all, to find beauty in unexpected places at any given opportunity is one of life’s rarest gifts and making the most out of the place where we are planted is an advantage..

JANADRIYAH FESTIVAL: Old Meets New BY MICHELLE DELOS REYES
To know more of Saudi Arabia’s heritage and culture, there’s only one major thing you need to do: attend the Janadriyah Festival, the largest cultural celebration in the Kingdom which showcases its past and present, and shows glimpses of its future.
T
he Janadriyah Cultural and Heritage Festival, sponsored by the Saudi National Guard, was first held in 1985. It offered a variety of activities and programs, showing the rich cultural history and tradition of Saudi Arabia.
The Janadriyah Festival is considered to be the most famous cultural event in Saudi Arabia; it embraces almost all aspects of Saudi culture. It’s a trip down memory lane, a learning hub, and a gallery of arts and craftsmanship all rolled into one. It’s a custom for the festival to start with the grand annual camel race. Speeches, national performances and recognitions follow throughout the days that the festival is open to the public. The festival is held during the winter season, which makes walking in the gorgeous weather a treat. There are six gates to the festival and one day is not enough to see the entirety of the place. Good thing, there’s no entrance fee and people are free to take a map of the area to guide them where to go. Information booths with friendly staff are also found along the way. Discovering each pavilion in the festival is a must as each one is different. Surprises abound!
12
The 33rd Janadriyah Festival has a theme of ‘faithfulness and loyalty’. Each year, a country is invited to become the guest of honor. Past festivals featured Germany (Janadriyah 30), Egypt (Janadriyah 31), and India (Janadriyah 32). This year, it’s Indonesia. The guest country is given an opportunity to display their own culture and heritage in one of the special pavilions and perform their national dances and talents in the main stage. Indonesia introduced their folklore arts theater to the audience. It showcased their tribal, royal, and folk dances from different Indonesian provinces. The heritage village, which is a permanent fixture in Janadriyah, has more than 80 pavilions. These pavilions house the different provinces including Najran, Hail, Jazan, Wassim, Al Gath, Al Madina, Al Baha, Asir, Al Kharj, Tabuk, and Al Jouf. Other Gulf countries like Bahrain, Oman and UAE have their own areas as well. Each pavilion depicts the art, architecture, food, and local produce that are prominent in the region. Traditional songs, dances, and poetry are also presented. Artisans from all over the Kingdom are also given
the opportunity to exhibit their craft from carpet weaving, pottery making, and woodcarving. The various government offices, ministries, medical services, hospitals and universities in Saudi Arabia are also included in the festival. Guests learn a lot from their pavilions. There are also restaurants and fast food kiosks. There are games for children and there are henna artists for women to get some unique designs. Souks and bazaars are in every corner and buying local accessories and produce is a must! It’s the perfect time to shop for honey and dates! We tried their lightcolored honey to the amusement of the vendor explaining what makes the colors of the sweet liquid darker and lighter. This is a great time to try some of their delicacies and if you stay long enough, you might be able to witness the fireworks display at the end of the night. Every year, the festival gets better! There are so many new things to see and experience. The Janadriyah festival is truly a feast for the senses! It is worth visiting this unique and delightful display of culture and history.

TOP 5 KID-FRIENDLY PLACES IN RIYADH BY HINA MAHMOOD
Design by Lama Askari
With activities like seeing the African safari in the middle of the desert or eating out in various restaurants with play areas, Riyadh is fast becoming one of the best cities for family outings. Here’s your checklist for the perfect family hangout.
1. AL BUJAIRI QUARTER (12 minutes from the DQ)
Located in the historic area of Al-Diriyah, Bujairi is an ideal location for a family picnic (apart from the DQ of course!). There are a number of restaurants, coffee shops and dessert places located amongst the completely pedestrianized pathways. The park is beautifully-lit. When events are scheduled, it’s a bustling place. Otherwise, Bujairi is a quiet spot for you and your family. Recommended Eats: Try the Saudi traditional cuisine at the Najd Village. The restaurant takes you back in time as you are served in the typical Saudi majlis manner (sitting down). The restaurant was built to look and feel traditional, with homely wooden features, traditional rugs, and décors with bright pops of color.
2. NOFA WILDLIFE PARK (1 hour from the DQ)
Situated in Tibrak, just outside Riyadh, Nofa Wildlife Park is open every Saturday year round. The park is massive, and offers real wilderness along with a huge diversity of species, making you feel like you’re in Africa. The tour lasts for 2 hours: an hour touring the animal safari via an open-air game drive vehicle and an hour-long walking tour at the Visitor’s Centre, where guests can get up close to birds and reptiles, among other species. Playing with the animals will delight your children.
14
Recommended Eats: Though you are served hot beverages and a light snack as you wait for your tour vehicle at the reception, the park has its own Safari Restaurant that you need to book in advance. Their menu is short but apt, and the fastest selling item on their menu is their Prime Beef Burger.
3. RIYADH PARK
(12 minutes from the DQ)
This mall is the newest shopping center in Riyadh with the most entertainment options for you and your children. Riyadh Park is home to the largest Magic Planet Family Entertainment Center in the region. The center has different rides and arcade games which both youngters and adult can enjoy. It also houses the VOX Cinemas with four theaters. Some of the theatres are specially designed for kids screening animation, family-friendly films, and educational movies. Recommended Eats: Being a mall, the food selections are many. Outside the entertainment center is the food court. There are also restaurants like Buffalo Wild Wings, Brisket, and Big Chef.
4. FOOD TRUCK SQUARE AT THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT VISITOR'S CENTER (20 minutes from the DQ)
Situated right outside the Public Transport Visitor’s Centre, is a food truck park. But before enjoying the drinks and food offered by the various food trucks stationed in the area, your family can go to the visitor’s center. Your children will enjoy the presentations of the upcoming transport network system in Riyadh. There are also replicas of the color-coded trains where you can get a feel of what the ride will be like. It will be a fun and informative experience for your kids. Outside, there is a lot of space to roam and sit down for a meal. You might also want to check out the Virtual Reality Gaming truck.
5. RESTAURANTS' PLAY AREAS
Many of the restaurants in Riyadh are kid-friendly. Some favorites that also offer children’s play areas include Piatto in Exit 5, Buffalo Wild Wings in North Ring Road, and Chuck E Cheese. At Piatto, every child is greeted with Piatto’s activity book along with color pens that keep them engaged. The Exit 5 outlet has a dedicated play area for the children. Buffalo Wild Wings, on the other hand, has 68 large tv screens with a dedicated play area filled with XBOX, PS4, activity books, and balloons. Chuck E Cheese is a popular restaurant for kids, especially with its menu filled with comfort food. It has arcade video games that keeps children busy. Daytime during the week is the best time visit. Evenings and weekends can get quite busy.
Recommended Eats: The Mushroom Shake is a novel idea. It’s a milkshake in a cute glass with a muffin on top. Sweet! There are also a few trucks for burgers and fries.
Other places your little ones will enjoy: Stationary Fantasies, Kidzzdom in Hayat Mall, Little Princess Riyadh, Billy Beez in Nakheel Mall and Doomidoo

AL-'ULA:
Truly A Place Like No Other BY REINA TEJANO-BERINA
Over the vast Arabian desert lands, amidst the towering sandstone mountains, a peaceful message is whispered in the air: Welcome to Al-’Ula.
A
fter years of hard work and preparation, the Winter at Tantora Festival has finally opened its ancient doors to travelers under the patronage of the Royal Commission of Al-'Ula last December 2018. The buzz about the event is highly justified, from the long list of exciting excursions and scheduled concert performances of world-class artists to the glass mirror concert hall that’s been constructed right in the middle of the desert. It promised to be a “festival for all the senses” – for one to be entertained, inspired and to learn something new about Saudi Arabia. Al-'Ula is one of the seven governorates of the Medina region. It was once home to the Dedanite and Nabatean civilizations, included in the vital trading route between cities for commerce and development. Today, it is home to Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site: Madain Saleh. With the establishment of the glamorous Winter at Tantora Festival, Al-'Ula is set to become a major tourist destination in the Kingdom in the years to come. Our three-day adventure began by arriving at Al-'Ula via Saudia Airlines, which was the exclusive airline partner of the festival, with direct flights from Jeddah and Riyadh. The 20
welcoming party at the Prince Majeed bin Abdulaziz Airport had friendly, young Saudi ushers, all well-versed in English and attending to guests with a smile. Once the confirmation of registration was done, we walked out of the airport and were met with a long formation of numbered SUVs assigned to each visitor. Impressive, was the first word that came to mind. The drive from the airport to the resort gave us a sneak peek of the weekend ahead, cruising past rock formations that were as silent as they were majestic. We then arrived to our “glamp-site” called Shaden Resorts. From the outside, they all appeared to be traditional Arabic tents in between huge rock mountains, but inside, it had all the amenities you needed: air-conditioning, hot shower, a Nespresso machine and more. We were about to experience “glamping” (glamorous camping) at its finest. Our exploration of Al-'Ula officially started at Dadan Kingdom, one of the ancient civilizations of the Arabian Peninsula. It is a city that is now underground, but once flourished as an important colony in the 6th and 7th century. By late afternoon, we were brought to the iconic site of the Elephant Rock and were made to admire its glory until sunset fell. A seating area
SEE SAUDI
with traditional coffee and Arabic music allowed us to spend more time viewing the enormous rock formation that looks like an elephant grazing through the desert. As the stars began to come out, the sight became more breathtaking by the minute. To cap off our first night, we ended it with a stroll along the old town of Al-'Ula. The “souk” showcased local craftsmanship and goods, including specialty oils and calligraphy. We also found the “Tantora” (sundial) of which the event is named after. For years, it was the local’s way of telling time and seasons. Day 2 began with a trip to Al Hijr, filled with remarkably preserved, man-made tombs of Nabateans that depicted modern-day accuracy and skill. To think that these men made these grandiose structures with nothing but a chisel, hammer and picks is beyond belief. The tomb of all tombs was the Qasir Al Farid, the most photographed tomb of Madain Saleh. Interestingly enough, this sought-after site in Al-Ula is in fact, an unfinished tomb and no one ended up being buried there. Nowadays, people sojourn more than a thousand miles just to take a photo of this piece of history. We also stopped by Jabal Al Ikmah (Library Mountain), where ancient inscriptions were found on every rock around us. It showed familiar symbols of animals and writings from the Dadanite and Lihyanite era. I run my hands through the carved details of the rock and couldn’t help but feel that I
have touched a piece of history. For lunch, we were driven up to the highest point in Al-'Ula called Harrat Owairdh. They have transformed this mountain-top to a relaxing, viewing deck that overlooks the entire Al-'Ula county. Come evening time, guests from the entire Tantora Festival dressed to the nines to attend the concert of internationally acclaimed composer and musician, Omar Al-Khairat. Everyone convened at the Marayah Theater, all amazed with the construction and beauty of this “glass hall. As we wait for the concert to commence, we were led to a short, immersive art exhibit of Vincent Van Gogh. His famous works were virtualized and directed to move and in such a way that were both poetic and sensorial. It felt like you were in the paintings yourself, whether in the field of sunflowers or under a starry, starry night. Later on at the concert, the audience enjoyed the classic pieces of Omar Al-Khairat, clapping and jesting along his music for almost two hours. He was met with multiple standing ovations until his last performance of the night. Other artists like Andrea Bocelli, Lang Lang, and Yanni were also booked for the Winter at Tantora weekends.
On our third and final day, our excursions included a thrilling sand buggy ride that had us fiercely maneuvering up and down the sand dunes and in between rock mountains. Half an hour later, it was followed by a gripping ride up a helicopter for an aerial tour, giving us a different perspective of AlGarameel, Akra Mountain, the Circle and Arrow, Al Hijr, Elephant Rock and of course, Qasir Al-Farid. Our final meal for the trip was set at a hidden location between large rocks where the family restaurant of Shalal Farm mysteriously sits. We had to navigate our way through a cave-like entrance only to find a boisterous setup at the end of the passageway where guests were seated in Arabic style, traditional instruments being played in the center and a grill ready at each table for us to roast local corn and chestnuts on. We gathered with our group of other tourists, many of them first-timers to the Kingdom. “We did not know that there was such history and beauty here in Saudi Arabia,” said one of the guests. It is that feedback and from many others too, that proved the success of the festival’s goal: to discover a place like no other. Overall, the weekend package was a balanced selection of sightseeing, cultural immersion and adventures. The Saudi tour guides were all knowledgeable, enthusiastic and engaging, in fact, they were the ones who impressed us the most. This event has shown the potential that the Kingdom has in making its mark as a tourist destination and this is only the beginning. As of writing, the highly-anticipated highlight of the event is the inauguration of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Endurance Cup, which is the horse race of Arabian stallions from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and other countries. It will also kick off the week-long Al-'Ula Balloon Festival called “Tethered Flight and Night Glow Show” providing a hot air balloon experience from sunset to evening from February 1 to 9. W
ith all the developments happening around the Kingdom these years, Jeddah has always been a favorite destination of locals and expats alike. This city located at the west coast of Saudi Arabia has been fondly referred to as “The Bride of the Red Sea” as it lies along the shores of the Red Sea which plays a vital role in Jeddah’s rich history and economic growth. The old days of Jeddah traces back from around 2,500 years ago when the city was initially founded as a fishing village by the Quda’a tribe who travelled from Yemen. It was in 647 AD when the third Islamic caliph Uthman ibn Affan historically transformed Jeddah by declaring the city as the official major port to welcome Muslim pilgrims, also known as hajjis, travelling by sea to enter the city of Makkah. Up to this day, Jeddah remains the main point of entry for a lot of Muslim pilgrims from all over the world who visit the two holy cities of Islam – Makkah and Madinah. One of the ways to trace and experience the history of Jeddah is to walk along the streets of the Historic Old Jeddah in Al-Balad district recently included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The astounding traditional architecture of combined stone-built buildings and wooden windows, plus the souk around the area, is certainly a visual treat. Not too far away from the Al-Balad district stands three of the tallest structures in the world including the tallest lighthouse at the Jeddah Islamic Port and the tallest flagpole at the King Abdullah Square. Undoubtedly, the most famous landmark is the King Fahd’s Fountain labeled as the tallest 24
fountain in the world which stretches up from 260 meters to 312 meters above the Red Sea. Built in the early 1980s and launched in 1985, this fountain continues to attract not only Jeddah tourists but their residents as well.

Jeddah’s entertainment scene provides fun and amusement to its residents and visitors with various events and music activities. Vox Cinemas has also opened at the Red Sea Mall last January 28, 2019.

Other places like Fakieh Aquarium, Trio Ranch for horseback riding, and theme parks such as AlShallal, Atallah Happy Land, and Jungle Land deliver more family bonding activities in the city.
● Enjoy the open water with jet ski and boat rentals, and cruise along the shores of the Red Sea. Scuba diving and snorkelling may also be an option to have a close encounter with underwater creatures.
One of the most awaited attractions to be completed by 2020 is the 1-kilometer high Jeddah Tower which is on its way to becoming the new tallest building in the world upon completion.
● For the less adventurous, fishing is the perfect activity. The Red Sea started as a fishing hamlet thousands of years ago, and still remains to be a good source of seafood.
In addition, the new King Abdulaziz International Airport had its soft opening last year. It's set to welcome more visitors in the coming years.
Jeddah teaches us to enjoy the present and look forward to the future without forgetting the past. EASTERN PROVINCE: Gem of the Arabian Gulf BY ALEX WOODMAN
If you’re looking for a myriad of adventures in Saudi Arabia, that includes history, culture, and nature to arts, entertainment and leisure, there’s only one way to go… to the Eastern Province.
T
he history of the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia dates back to the era of Dilmun and Magan about 5000 years ago. The province’s countryside is rich with natural springs, oil wells, unique plants, and the unique scenic area which surrounds the sea. Interestingly, since ancient times, the Eastern Province has differed from the other provinces of the Kingdom in its architectural style, building constructions, and the original shape of older cities. This is demonstrated in traditional narrow streets with terrace houses, palm fronds constructions, mud, and robust old wood used to construct the roofs of the houses. The modern Eastern Province can be explored through its central oasis and the developing cities of Dammam, Al–Khobar, Qatif, and al–Hasa.
The Dammam Metropolitan Area or Greater Dammam Dhahran is the administrative center of the Eastern Province, which along with Al–Khobar and Dammam, form what is known as the Dammam Metropolitan Area or the Greater Dammam. As the capital of the Eastern Province, Dammam is located on the road which intersects the Arabian Gulf States: the Kingdom of Bahrain, the State of Kuwait, the State of Qatar, the Sultanate of Oman, the UAE, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. 26
According to legend, the name Dammam is derived from a tradition of knocking on drums to alert the people of imminent danger. It was also used when it was time to meet the fishermen returning from the sea. Among the most ancient sites and antiquities of Dammam, remains the Western Raka with its 160 burial places, dating back to the first century. One can also find unique constructions and monumental buildings from the pre-Islamic period in Northern Raka. Nowadays, Dammam has grown from a small fishing village to a major commercial port in the Gulf and is considered to be a modern city. Saudi Aramco, one of the largest oil companies in the world, is also one of the most profitable. Its success is related to the discovery of Dammam Well #7, in 1938. Since that time, Saudi Aramco began its production of commercial quantities of oil. The well is located on a hill named Jabal Dhahran near an uncommon cluster of peaks called Umm al–Rus. Currently, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) is located near the Prosperity Well; an area in the region where oil was first discovered in commercial quantities. The construction of Ithra was initiated by Saudi Aramco; formerly the Arabian-American Oil Company, and inaugurated by King Salman on 1 December 2017. The highlight of Ithra
is to offer a comprehensive view of the culture of Saudi Arabia and the different phases of its historical development. The Ithra Center is ninety meters high and covers an area of 45,000 square meters. The Knowledge Tower overlooks the surrounding facilities, which were expected to become a pioneering hub of science and technology in the region. It has also encouraged pride in the community and has as one of its goals to create a knowledge-based economy in the country. Al–Khobar, often referred to as the Gulf Pearl or the Bride of the Eastern Province, is a visually attractive area, with its Corniche, spreading from the Half Moon Bay through Aziziyah beach to Dammam city. Al–Khobar is one of the most progressive, attractive, and economically developed cities in the Middle East and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Half Moon Bay is another exceptionally idyllic site, known for its stunning cover of golden sand, extending twenty-five kilometers along the coast. The climate of the Bay brings with it the warm desert waves which are perfect for all types of water sports; especially diving and searching for the sea inhabitants. The Eastern Province is considered one of the most magnificent places for diving. Many believe that the beauty of its waters and coral reefs, its numerous sea creatures, and vibrant marine life is the highlight of this location. Historically, the earliest divers collected pearls and celebrated their discoveries at the annual pearl collecting festival.
The Al–Khobar Waterfront overlooks the urban life of the city. After some time, the area of the Waterfront was converted into a park; soon named in honor of Prince Faisal bin Fahad. The park remains an expansive green area of 500,000 square meters, spreading along the Al–Khobar East coastline. The place is cherished by the residents and considered to be the heart of Al–Khobar city. Eventually, the outstanding feature of Dammam and Al– Khobar is the King Fahd Causeway; built in 1984. The King Fahd Causeway is a series of bridges and causeways connecting Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and spans a distance of twenty-five kilometers. It is the longest bridge in the Middle East and has three lanes for cars; each with contemporary security checkpoints. The idea of constructing the causeway was initiated to improve the links and bonds between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

Located in the Eastern Region of Saudi Arabia, Al-Ahsa is a historic location with a beautiful landscape. This oasis, a part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network since December 2015, provides all the resources for an exciting weekend exploration of the rich cultural tapestry of Saudi Arabian heritage.
N
amed after the largest oasis in the world, Al-Ahsa is a land of serene green spaces and water springs located in the Eastern Province. The oasis stretches over an area of 20,000 hectares and includes a part of the vast Empty Quarter desert. Al-Ahsa Oasis is one of the largest and most famous natural oases in the world with over 30 million palm trees producing five tons of some of the finest dates. Al-Ahsa is a recognised World Heritage site and has been nominated as one of the seven wonders of the world. Al-Ahsa is also known for the warm welcome and generous hospitality of its locals. The millions of date palm trees in the Al-Ahsa Oasis are irrigated by more than 60 artesian springs offering both hot and cold water. Excess water from the irrigation system ends up in the Al Asfar Lake (Yellow Lake) and Al Uyoun Lake making them both very important and a haven for fascinating wildlife and beautiful greenery. Al-Ahsa has been inhabited since prehistoric times, due to its abundance of water in an otherwise arid region. Natural freshwater springs have existed in the oasis encouraging human habitation and agricultural efforts since prehistoric times. Nestled within the tranquil oasis are many archaeological sites showing the area’s significance historically.
Jawatha Mosque is believed to be one of the earliest mosques and is where the second Friday congregation prayer in Islam was offered; the first being held at the Prophet’s Mosque. Located in the center of Al-Ahsa National Park, the Jawatha Mosque was built in the seventh year of hijra, 629 AD and is still used for prayer today. Jabl Qarah is one of the most famous natural attractions in Al-Ahsa. This flat-topped hill stands 732 ft (225 m) above sea level; thousands of years of water and wind have transformed it into a series of fascinating caves which provide a cool haven in the heat of summer and a warm escape in winter. It overlooks the largest expanse of palm trees and orchards.
Souq Al-Qasriyah in the center of Al-Ahsa you will find the oldest market in the Arabian Gulf, with a history dating back nearly six centuries. It was once of great social and economic importance and a forum of traditional handicrafts displaying the area’s prominent textiles industry. Shoppers can browse handmade garments, perfume, herbs, popular medicine and date trading shops. The beauty and diversity of the surrounding architecture is also a big draw for tourists. Al-Uqair port is located on the Arabian Gulf, to the east of Saudi Arabia. It is the oldest historic port in the world dating back 1,500 years. Al-Uqair port boasts impressive architecture that attests to its wealth of history, making it the most famous historic port in the Kingdom. Although, it hasn’t received a single ship in more than half a century. Al-Shu'ba Mountain is an area steeped in history and a perfect place for families to visit. It is also an ideal destination for practicing the hobby of drifting. Stand on the elevated historic stones and enjoy the beautiful views of the palm oasis and beaches surrounding it. Qasr Sahood is a palace built during the Ottoman rule located in the Al-Hazem district of Al-Ahsa. Its name refers to the cannon which was stationed inside the palace called Sahood, to protect the city from the outsiders. It is one of the three remaining palaces in Al Ahsa. The Khuzam Palace, on the other hand, is located southwest of the ancient city in a desert area. It was built in 1932 for King Abdul Aziz and was also the home for King Saud. The Princes’ Schools was one of the first schools in the Gulf region and it was opened in 1941. The school was attended by the urban elite and members of the royal family. It was recently renovated by the Heritage Foundation and is now a small museum that offers a window into the traditional teaching methods reserved for the brightest students. As the country moves forward towards Vision 2030 with many exciting new changes and advancements, Al-Ahsa is working on their exciting projects for the future. The King
Salman Energy Park called SPARK, is a megaproject designed to position Saudi Arabia as a global energy hub that furnishes a dynamic, enabling environment for foreign and domestic investment. However, there is much more to Dubai than what first meets the eye. Dig a little deeper and you will find a city that is worthy of the buzzwords and the hype.
D
ubai’s transformation from a small fishing village, established in the early 18th century, to one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world is nothing short of remarkable. With roots in the pearling industry, fishing and sea trade, the city had developed into a thriving port by the 1930s. The discovery of oil in 1966 spurred on development of schools, hospitals, roads, as well as a new port and terminal at Dubai International Airport. Leadership, excellent infrastructure and a tax-free, expatriate friendly environment meant that Dubai quickly became a business and tourism hub. In the 1980s and early 1990s, Dubai took the strategic decision to heavily invest in tourism infrastructure, a choice that has paid off. In 2016, Dubai International Airport remained the busiest in the world by recording over 83.6 million international

passengers. In 2018, it was the 6th most visited city with over 15.8 million visitors pouring in from every corner of the globe. Saudi Arabia, along with India and the United Kingdom, is one of the top three international sources for tourism into the UAE. The UAE is accessible from every major global city in one stop and is an 8-hour flight away from two-thirds of the world's population. Dubai’s most exciting upcoming project is Expo 2020. The exhibition will bring together 180 countries to explore themes of connecting minds and creating the future, opportunity, mobility, and sustainability. It is estimated that the Expo could potentially lead to over 270,000 new jobs and that the UAE will award $102 billion (AED 374 billion) worth of contracts over the next 12 months, further driving the country’s growth. The exhibition is named “Korean history and culture: An enchanting journey to the Korean civilization,” and is running from December 18th until March 7th 2019. It also includes 250 archeological artifacts in relation to the Kingdom and the Middle East to showcase the items. The exhibition in Riyadh is the first in the Middle East on Korean culture and history, and it consists of five parts; the prehistoric era, the Bronze and Iron Ages, ancient kingdoms from 18 BC, the Goryeo Dynasty and the Joseon Dynasty. Over 10,000 residents call the DQ home. Meet Your Neighbor profiles interesting people in our international DQ Community. Learn about the diverse experience, interests, and backgrounds of DQ dwellers. Read on, and Meet Your Neighbor.
Where are you from? I am from Greenville, SC in Southeastern USA, but have lived all over the US for school and work.
kids and I love the different options inside the DQ. Now, we have an IHOP, 2 Starbucks coffee shops, and more restaurants opening.
Can you tell us more about your hobbies? Photography is my passion, or maybe more of an obsession. I love documenting our adventures with my children. Sharing my photos helps me stay connected with my family in the US and my friends around the world.
What do you like most about the DQ? I love how easy it is. I enjoy the diversity – there are Saudis and foreigners living side by side. We all chat and have tea at the park. I like watching the younger Saudis come to the new places in the DQ. It has a growing sense of community that I look forward to being a part of.
Other than that, my kids are my main hobby for now. Whatever they are interested in is what I do. I have found my background in visual arts to be super useful with children, especially during craft time. What brought you to Riyadh? I have been in KSA for just over a year. I wanted to move here a couple of years ago, but was finally offered a job opportunity last year. I had heard about the changes and had friends here that said it was a great country for a family with small children because of the expat community. They were right! What changes have you experienced in Riyadh since you first came here? In just one year, I have witnessed the opening of 2 movie theatres, women driving, a Russian Circus on Ice and other entertainment groups performing in the country for the first time. The national day Cirque Du Soleil was phenomenal. It seems like every day brings exciting new changes. What were your first impressions of the DQ? I’ve lived in the DQ from late 2017. At first, I was amazed by how big the sidewalks were! I was also surprised by the grass and parks, like Al Yamama Park and Embassy Park. My 52
What is something you wish the DQ had, but currently doesn’t? So many things. My top wishes are grocery store, movie theatre, and local market on the weekends. I would like to see better lighting in the parks so we could enjoy them more. Where are your favorite places to visit in Riyadh? We love Najd Village with guests. Kiddzdom and Chuck E. Cheese are two of my favorite spots for a day with the kids. If I am taking my daughter out, we love the Little Princess for a special girls outing. We enjoy Rock Park, and Landmarks Park is a nice place to play at for a few hours. We also enjoy visiting friends in other compounds. Any recommendations for your DQ neighbors? My main tip is to get outside! There is so much to do in Riyadh all the time. I have trouble deciding what to do on the weekends. Also, like the Facebook pages of Blue Abaya, The Pink Tarha, A Supertired Mom, and Green Tea Riyadh. They will definitely keep you informed about local events. The only reason to be bored in Riyadh is if you are not willing to go to new places, try new things, or meet people. Everyone is very open and warm here. I would recommend that they walk around the DQ in the evenings.
