A Healthy Ramadan BY FARIHA ESHRAT
As the month of practicing self-control and mindfulness returns, let’s take a look at the perfect opportunity for us to introduce and practice our healthy lifestyle goals.
A
s Muslims around the globe start this holy month with the hope of becoming more conscious of God, it is important to emphasize the role of healthy living among our responsibilities. The blessed Prophet said: “Take advantage of the good health before illnesses afflict you”. Here we tried to break down some of the most important take home points to help you have a healthy Ramadan. Replenish Your Fluids Two-thirds of our body weight is water, making it an important medium for all cells’ functions. Two liters or 8 glasses 14
of water is the commonly preached goal, however scientific research shows every person’s fluid needs are different and you should drink based on your thirst and needs. Soups, juices, smoothies, watery fruits all add towards your daily total water intake and are ideal for futoor, while caffeinated beverages will increase water loss and cause dehydration. During these hot summer day fasts, try to schedule strenuous activity overnight so you can reduce your water loss by sweating during the day. Be sure to remain mindful of your body’s water needs and drink up. Micturition is a useful tool to assess your hydration status, 6-8 times a day is average and anything significantly less warrants your attention. Consume Complex Carbs Complex carbohydrates are foods that will help release energy slowly throughout the day, such as oats, semolina,
beans, whole grain bread and pasta, brown and basmati rice, starchy vegetables etc. These are rich in fibers and other complex carbohydrates that take time to digest, helping you feel full for longer and can help maintain a constant blood sugar level. Simple refined sugars give you a spike of blood sugar which can leave you feeling fatigued soon after. A meal rich in complex carbs is ideal for suhoor. Pack on the Proteins Meat, poultry, fish, lentils and beans are ideal sources of protein. These are more energy dense than carbohydrates and supply important amino acids to help your body repair overnight. Make sure to include proteins as one-third of your meal. Fats are also energy dense but need to be chosen with more care. Animal fats like butter are less ideal for all, while natural plant fats such as those found in coconuts, avocados, nuts and olives can be an important source for this essential nutrient. Incorporating these sources and oily fish can help you get the right balance of fats in your diet. These are ideal for dinner and suhoor.
Airfry and Bake Avoiding fried foods in their entirety would probably be great for your health, but most people will not go through Ramadan without samosas. Airfrying has recently emerged as an alternative, while traditional options like baking as still much healthier than deep frying. Some healthy options for heat stable oils include coconut oil, peanut oil and canola oil. Avoid hydrogenated oils like shortening because of their high trans-fat content. Select Good Snacks During your evening and night hours, keep some good snacks at hand. Fruits and vegetables with your favorite dips, nuts and fresh juices are perfect for nibbling on. Snacks can help you consume your daily intake needs by breaking your meals down into smaller portions and keeping your energy up to do important work overnight.
Keeping healthy snacks at hand will save you from many mindless calories that don’t provide you much nutrition. Exercise Exercising in Ramadan is ideal after taraweeh. During this time, you can easily drink up after your work-outs and can place the session between meals. Be mindful of your body’s needs and alter your workout plan if you feel you can not keep it up during the month. It can be especially difficult over the first few days of Ramadan while your body is still acclimatizing to the new pattern of eating. If you have yet to follow a regular workout plan, your mindfulness and spirituality during this month of forming good habits and losing the bad ones could be the perfect spring in your step towards fitness. Start small and be consistent. Exercising has numerous benefits on your heart and muscle health that can help you face fasting with greater stamina. Get Sufficient Sleep Ramadan tends to change our sleep schedules significantly. Remember that 6-9 hours of sleep is the research recommendation. Keeping a sleep schedule closest to your yearly pattern will greatly help in maintaining your natural Circadian rhythm and keep you energetic throughout the day. If that isn’t possible, try to find time overnight at least for a nap. If you’re sleeping during the day, try to keep sunlight away using sleeping masks and dark rooms to help you get restful sleep. Blue light filters on your screen and winding down activity near bedtime are useful strategies in controlling your sleepiness.
“Eat of the good and wholesome things that We have provided for your sustenance, but indulge in no excess therein.” [81:20; Quran] Moderation is key, so even when you enjoy some kunafa or fries, remember to be mindful of your portions. Once you make the conscious effort to fill your plate with complex carbs, healthy fats and lean proteins first, you will have given your body a more nutritious meal and will leave less space for the deep-fried, sugar-dipped cravings of your choice. Let’s take a more holistic approach to health this Ramadan, so that we can be healthy and fit to share many more Ramadans with our loved ones.

Incredible Italy BY FARIHA ESHRAT
A center of culture, history, breathtaking nature and exquisite food, Italy is a one-stop wonder for all your next holiday's needs. Fall in love with one of the most popular destinations across the globe, as you experience how Italy is a delight for all your senses.
GO
I
taly is an irresistible wonder for any traveller. The vineyards of Tuscany, the Italian Renaissance Re-enactments of Florence, the historical architecture and culture in Rome, the scenic villages of South Italy, and the famous canals of Venice create a dreamy destination that can only be made better by Silician nature, Umbria Jazz and authentic Italian dining. Italy provides a vast variety of history, culture, fashion, art, cuisine and nature for travellers to dive into, an experience that always leaves you wanting more. The fifth most visited country in the world now, Italy has also been a central location for the travel and living of a myriad of people and cultures since historic times. This
has created a rich history and culture such that Italy hosts the most UNESCO world heritage sites in the world. With numerous beaches, valleys, mountains and archeological ruins, a trip to Italy can easily go from a short family holiday to an extensive exploration of some of the most exciting locations in the world. Italy and Saudi Arabia: a thriving partnership For more than 85 years, since the establishment of formal diplomatic relations, Italy and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have enjoyed a close friendship which has continued to grow from strength to strength, till today. The bilateral 21
cooperation thrives on many common interests: from addressing regional crises to advancing intercultural dialogue, from promoting security cooperation to enhancing bilateral trade and investment opportunities. Over 1 million Saudis visit Italy every year for tourism and business. They are able to enjoy the beauty of Italy, its hospitality, fashion, art and food. But Italy offers more than that. It is one of the seven biggest manufacturing countries in the world and has played an important contribution to Saudi Arabia’s economic development since the beginning. Trade relations between Italy and Saudi Arabia registered a positive trend in 2018, by growing at +11% compared to 2017 and reaching 8.2 billion Euros. Saudi Arabia is the first trade partner for Italy in the MENA area, after Algeria, and Italy is one of the top EU trade partners of the Kingdom. Over 70 Italian companies are present in the Kingdom and contribute to the development of Saudi Arabia in a wide range
22
of sectors, from energy and petrochemicals to fashion and luxury goods. Italian companies are also key partners in iconic infrastructure projects, such as the new Riyadh Metro. In the coming years, a direct presence and local content will be key elements to operate successfully in the Saudi market. Italian companies have a strong track record in supporting local economies worldwide and are increasingly eager to operate in Saudi Arabia and contribute to the objectives of the Saudi Government: support economic diversification, develop a vibrant private sector and foster the growth of Saudi SMEs. As Saudi Arabia has embarked on an unprecedented program of economic and social reforms with the Vision 2030, Italy stands ready to continue to be a strategic partner of the Kingdom and it is strongly committed, in a spirit of true friendship, to giving its own specific contribution to the success of the Vision.
communities in the Southern Mediterranean with the firm belief that they share a common destiny. Italy in Saudi Arabia: current and future projects The Italian Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate General in Jeddah have been working restlessly to strengthen the cultural dialogue between Italy and Saudi Arabia and to promote a rich and varied cultural program. In 2018, within the framework of the initiative “Italy, Culture and the Mediterranean” sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs across the countries of the wider Mediterranean region, North Africa and the Gulf, almost 30 different events have been organized over a period of 12 months. The aim and the ambition of this program has been to create new opportunities to enhance intercultural dialogue, to overcome cultural barriers and stereotypes and to learn and cherish our common heritage. 2018 also marked the first participation of Saudi Arabia to La Biennale di Venezia with a national pavilion: a true landmark in the cultural relations between the two countries. The Saudi-Italian archeological mission, with the support of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage, is a further example of the thriving cultural partnership between Italy and Saudi Arabia. Italian archaeologists from the University L’Orientale in Naples, led by Prof. Romolo Loreto, have been working for a decade in Dumat Al Jandal, in the Al Jouf province, to uncover and preserve an important piece of Saudi pre-Islamic and Islamic cultural heritage.
In this context, it is worth mentioning that at the end of this year, Saudi Arabia will take over from Japan the Presidency of the G20 and the following year it will pass it on to Italy. The Summit of G20 Heads of States and Government will be hosted in Riyadh in the second half of 2020 and over the course of next year, dozens of meetings at Ministerial and technical level will be held in the Kingdom. For all those meetings, Italy and Saudi Arabia will work very closely together as part of the G20 Troika, sharing priorities and objectives. Such close and intense relationships between Italy and Saudi Arabia are not surprising. Both at the center of the Mediterranean and Gulf region, they enjoy centuries of common cultural, political and economic exchanges. From the Arabian peninsula, Islam reached Europe and the signs of its presence are still visible today in Italy, notably in Sicily. Italians have always reached out to the Arab and Muslim
Most recently, from March 14 to April 14, with the support of the Embassy of Italy in Riyadh, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture – Ithra in Dahran, in collaboration with Biblioteca Ambrosiana of Milan and NSPRD, hosted the exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci Codex Atlanticus: Through Time and Space” to the celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of the Italian artist and scientist who influenced the history of world thought and art. For the first time, six original drawings of the Italian genius have been exhibited and could be admired in Saudi Arabia and the entire Gulf region: a truly historic exhibition! Looking ahead, there are many upcoming events and opportunities to engage and experience Italy in KSA. For example, the Embassy will host next autumn a tournée of Maestro Paolo Damiani, internationally-acclaimed composer and Director of the Jazz Department at the Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia since 2002. The Conservatorio is one of the oldest and most distinguished musical schools in Italy and in the world. Maestro Damiani will lead a group of young Italian musicians who graduated with honors from the Conservatorio, in series of concerts featuring original compositions by Maestro Damiani. This is the very best of Italian contemporary jazz music, combining the melodic and ethnic musical traditions of Southern Italy and classical Italian opera. Stay tuned!

With a rich museum scene, numerous exhibitions, from archeological artifacts to classical and contemporary art, theatres and the Opera House, Rome offers a rich cultural program all year round. Civita di Bagnoregio, also known as "the city that dies" because of the erosion phenomenon that threatens its existence, is a medieval village in the province of Viterbo, near Rome, built on the top of a cliff and reachable only by foot. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Turin, former capital of the Kingdom of Italy, hosts the second most important Museo Egizio in the world, boasting a collection of artifacts from Ancient Egypt which is second only to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Palermo is the gateway to Sicily, an island of beautiful nature, extraordinary history, incredible food and welcoming people. Monreale, Cefalù, Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo are great places to visit, especially in the summer to enjoy a traditional Sicilian delicatessen: the ice-cream sandwich.
What To Do Last year Saudi Arabia participated for the first time with a national pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia – the most important venue in the world to showcase all forms of artistic expressions, including cinema, music, theatre and dance. See the 58th edition of La Biennale Art in Venice that will open its doors on May 11 until November 2019, under the theme "May You Live In Interesting Times". Watch the Calcio Storico, the re-enactment in traditional costumes of a historical football game played in 1530 by the Florentine population besieged by the imperial troops of Charles V. The game is a combination of soccer, rugby and world wrestling. In the beautiful setting of Milan, the capital of fashion and industrial design, you can now visit the XXII International Exhibition of la Triennale di Milano, entitled “Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival”. La Triennale comprises a thematic exhibition and 22 international pavilions. Attend the Umbria Jazz. With Etruscan walls and a delightful medieval historic centre, Perugia is a city of gourmands and artists, capital of the beautiful Umbria region. About the Ambassador
Luca Ferrari Embassy of Italy BY ALEX WOODMAN A diplomat by vocation, in 2016 His Excellency - Ambassador Luca Ferrari - was appointed to be the Italian Ambassador in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He started his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1986. His first post abroad was at the Italian Embassy in Moscow. He earned his MA degree in Political Science from the University La Sapienza in Rome and is currently a contributor to "Aspenia," the geopolitical magazine issued by Aspen Institute in Italy. How did you begin to prepare to become a diplomat? My father, a career diplomat too, and his postings abroad, truly inspired me since my childhood. I had the chance to travel with him all over the world. When I was just 5 years old we left Italy and I did not return until I was then 18 years old. Thus, at an early age, I made up my mind to follow his steps and become myself a diplomat. Times were quite different when I joined the Foreign Service and traveling was not a mass phenomenon. Early on, I realized that a career in diplomacy would allow me to keep on travelling and, hence, discovering the beauty of the world. I started my career as a young diplomat in 1986 when I was 24, right after I graduated from the University La Sapienza in Rome. I was admitted into the diplomat ranks and eventually assigned to key posts, such as the Italian Embassies in Moscow and later in Washington, D.C. In 1999 I was back in Rome and had few rewarding positions, first in the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs till, later on, promoted to be the Director for Middle Eastern Affairs. In 2009 I returned to Washington D.C. in charge of Public and Legislative Affairs. Four years later I was appointed Deputy Head of Mission at the Italian Embassy in Madrid. In October 2013 I was again in Rome and promoted Deputy General Director of Economic Affairs and Central Director of Financial Multilateral Cooperation. Coming to my current position, I was appointed Italian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2016. When was your position set up in Saudi Arabia and how many years have you been in Riyadh? My very first day in Riyadh was on March 7, 2016. Since then, I have had the chance to experience enormous economic and social changes under the leadership of the House of Saud, His Majesty King Salman and his son, the
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. It is a very exciting time to be here and Vision 2030 has become a source of inspiration for the young Saudi generations. 70% of Saudi population is aged under 35 years and represents a tremendous push for change. There is a youthful spirit in this Country that you could not experience in mature and ageing Western economies. On top of this, the empowerment of women and their gradual but steady inclusion into the community and the labour market will lead to a more inclusive Saudi Arabia. What was your reaction to being given the assignment to become the Ambassador to Saudi Arabia? Can you share some of your initial feelings about being selected for this honored position? I was extremely excited when I found out that my next assignment was to be the Head of Mission in Riyadh. The Kingdom is the main Country and economy in the GCC and is changing and evolving quickly. Just to mention something not conceivable till long time ago, it is becoming a travel destination, not only for the traditional Haj and Umrah pilgrims but also for its archeological sites, its heritage sites and its pristine coastline. Saudi Arabia’s General Tourism and Heritage Authority has registered more dozens of archaeological sites across the Kingdom, has established the national electronic register for the documentation of archaeological and historical sites in the Kingdom and is working closely with UNESCO to promote to increase the number of domestic World Heritage Sites. I am proud of the existing deep connection between Saudi Arabia and Italy, which have become one of friendship and cooperation, extended to all volets, among which culture & education, trade and industrial cooperation. Can you discuss some of the experiences you faced as the Ambassador in Saudi Arabia? What does your work entail? Firstly let me mention that the staff of the Italian Embassy is continuously pushing forward projects and initiatives which will in time benefit both countries. To come to the strong bilateral partnership between Italy and Saudi Arabia, I want to highlight my eagerness to boost and intensify political and economic affairs between our two Countries. Besides, I have been stretching the visa potential of the Italian Embassy to its maximum to increase the number
is now the Vice President of LUISS “Guido Carli” University in Rome. Her delegation visited the Kingdom to set the basis for developing joint academic programs. I would like to mention that I belong to two groups of Ambassadors, the European group and the Latin-American one. Italy and Spain have both a special connection not only with Europe (being European countries) but also with Latin America, due to our historical ties and immigration waves to this continent.
of Saudi tourists who visit Italy. Similarly, more and more Italians are interested to visit the Kingdom and the recent ease of Saudi visa procedures will allow more tourist inflow in the future. Now, in my position as Head of Mission, I am working tirelessly to attract Saudi investors in Italy and, vice versa, inform Italian investors on the potential of Saudi market and Government incentives to diversify economy and to develop local content. We need to build closer business partnerships, connect Italian companies with Saudi counterparts and fully reap benefits and incentives allocated by Government agencies to support economic diversification, development of private sector and growth of SMEs. What are the most significant challenges you have faced as the Ambassador to Saudi Arabia? What do you consider the most rewarding? From my very first day as Ambassador in Riyadh, I have been working on how to change the outside world’s perception, Italy included, about Saudi Arabia. Italy and Saudi Arabia are both G20 countries and are already working together in the Troika. Saudi Arabia will host the 15th annual G20 Leaders' Summit on November 21 and 22, 2020, in its capital Riyadh and Italy will take over the G20 Presidency from the Kingdom in 2021. Shared priorities are growth, in a more inclusive and sustainable way compared to past interpretation. In the future, we will further develop our bilateral strategic partnership under the framework of Vision 2030. Besides our fruitful cooperation in the economic and trade fields, the Embassy never stops to promote Italian language, culture and lifestyle, by combining tradition and modernity. Saudi Arabia is doing the same, by promoting a vibrant society and a thriving economy, which are both at the basis of Vision 2030. Eventually, this will lead our societies – which have many commonalities - to prosperity. Can you share some details as to what a typical day is like as the Ambassador to Saudi Arabia? As Ambassador, I have meetings every day, with Government officers and Ministries and with Saudi businesspeople. I do assist and help Italian delegations when they do come to strengthen political ties or to explore the potential of its market or to promote cultural exchanges. Just to mention an example, we had here a delegation headed by former Italian Minister of Justice, Prof. Paola Severino. She 26
What do you like most about living in Riyadh and can you name a few of your favorite places that you would recommend to anyone planning a visit to Riyadh? In Riyadh I would recommend to stroll in Thalia Street and stop by at one of its many restaurants, cafes, and shops. This area does remind me of Europe and the lively city centers where pedestrians could truly enjoy life. I do also like the new Riyadh Park, which has a diverse and unique design and is crowded with young Saudis, who come to enjoy its entertainment areas and its wide choice of local and international restaurants and eating spots. On the other side, I do not especially like the compounds, which tend to separate and not mix life of expats with the one of Saudi citizens. What do you like most about the DQ? First of all I like how the developers have designed the Diplomatic Quarter. With time, additional entertainment places, beautiful venues, and charming restaurants have been built and open for visitors to spend their leisure time in a peaceful environment, dotted with green parks. I do visit Oud Square quite often and love its lovely atmosphere. I find the DQ is very appealing and has excellent sources of entertainment for everybody. What kind of food would you recommend to the DQ residents for this month? There are many great Italian restaurants in the Kingdom. In Riyadh you can find for example mouthwatering pizza, even compared to Italy. There are many skilled pizza makers in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam and they are doing a terrific job; nothing to envy to Italy. I would also recommend a variety of pasta dishes for this month. Typical Italian ingredients, like pork, are here replaced by duck or meat, and they turn out to be delicious additions to Italian recipes. For example, the Italian sauce “carbonara”, which is spaghetti pasta with eggs and thick cut diced bacon, could be equally be served with duck meat and the is as much delicious as the original “carbonara”.

A Blend of Inspiring Culinary Classes BY LYNDA SCHMIDT
Growth, change and new opportunities for women are increasing in Saudi Arabia. The successful launch of Blend Culinary by founder Sarah BinSaid, a proud Saudi Arabian woman and entrepreneur is an inspiring example.
D
riving up to one of the malls in Riyadh, I’m not sure what to expect. An office at the fourth floor is the home of the newly-opened Blend Culinary. From the outside it is unremarkable, but as you walk through the door, you enter a culinary oasis. I love how the owner and founder, Sarah BinSaid, describes the transformation: “It is like a Kinder surprise egg.” After walking through the small reception area, we enter a meeting room. The marbled floors and tastefully-decorated space create a welcoming vibe. There is a window to the adjacent room where the modern kitchen showcases a brick feature wall with the Blend logo. There are two large islands with six oversized sinks and 16 burners to accommodate up to 15 chef stations. Sarah welcomes us warmly and introduces herself, gracefully answering my questions and posing patiently for photos. She is a confident, beautiful woman, an entrepreneur with passion and ambition for her culinary aspirations and her country. From a young age, Sarah learned to appreciate the art of food like her father. He loved to cook and exposed his family to new cuisines during extensive travels abroad as well as at home in Riyadh. Sarah admits that it is a part of her personality to try new things and be open to novel experiences. 28
When she first started this venture, Sarah wasn’t certain whether her dream of opening the first culinary school in Riyadh could become a reality. As a pioneer, she had no precedent to know if there was an interest from the public for this kind of institution. When devising her business model for Blend Culinary, Sarah had to rely on her intuition. She chose to start small, renting a cozy office space, to “test the waters.” In her opinion, the Crown Prince’s Vision 2030 has helped “big time” to transform her vision into a reality, with government sectors providing easy access to loans and paperwork for new businesses. The response to Blend Culinary has been tremendous. The popular chefs are attracting clients and the feedback has been positive. Sarah is already dreaming of expanding to more branches in the region and is offering classes in the Diplomatic Quarter. Blend Culinary offers classes showcasing a variety of international cuisines, including two of Sarah’s favorites: French and Asian Fusion. Skills include basics of food, baking, recipes, knife skills and coffee artistry by chefs from all over the world. There are public and private classes as well as classes for families, corporations, aspiring chefs and children. Options include: Meat and Fish, Pastry & Baking, Healthy &

Vegan and Pasta Making. Sarah is most enthusiastic about attracting a wide variety of clients from different backgrounds and even plans to offer a Gluten-Free class in September. We had the privilege of observing the second session in a five-part Ramadanyat series being conducted by Chef Eman who is a food festival winner and a graduate from Goody Academy. We learned the importance of the meal that breaks the Ramadan fast which is usually an elaborate, family affair, traditionally featuring five courses. The first item on the menu was an oat and chicken soup prepared with sautĂŠed red onions and a variety of spices that made the room fragrant with savory aromas. To follow, students learned how to create tuna, potato and fresh cilantro kofta. The third course was a rocket and halloumi salad with fried eggplant and a delicious dressing combining flavors such as balsamic vinegar and molasses. The fourth dish was vegetable and cheese sambosa dipped in zaatar. For dessert, muhalabia, an Arabic custard topped with kunafa, completed the meal. We were thrilled with our experience at Blend Culinary. The exquisite space designed by Sarah BinSaid, her passion for food and the extensive variety of cuisines and culinary skills offered have captured our interest. We will definitely sign up for a class in the near future. We hope you do too!

Most of us don’t want to be trawling through malls looking for festive outfits for Iftars when we are fasting. Enter Max Fashion, one of the region’s largest value fashion retailer, with Ramadan collections that are as beautiful to wear as they are convenient to shop. Haroon Al Rasheed, Head of Marketing at Max Fashion said: “As a brand, Max Fashion embraces the principles of Ramadan by celebrating family and community, and by focusing on modest and fashion trends that offer great value. We are excited to launch our new Ramadan collections that celebrate style with high attention to detail and include an on-trend color palette. Choose pieces for evening iftars, pre-dawn suhoors and Eid celebrations. From stylish statement dresses to luxurious lace pieces for easy day-to-night dressing for Ramadan and Eid, we’ve got your style needs covered.” As most of us prefer to take a personalized approach to fashion during the Holy Month, we asked style gurus down at Max for tips to help you look and feel your best. Here are five key trends to keep in mind whilst you enjoy the festive season: 1. Explore your feminine side: For women, Ramadan fashion is about femininity and style – maxi dresses, flowing palazzos and classic jumpsuits are enhanced with rich gold, magenta and black & white tones. Wide-leg pants also help you stay cool and breezy during the summer. Max Fashion’s Ramadan collection also features bold animal prints which help create exciting looks for those special occasions and moments shared during Ramadan. If you’re looking for a more casual look, a maxi dress is the perfect choice. Long, flowy and simple in design with delicate lace elements, these dresses make scorching summer months more bearable. 2. Modest, practical attire that will easily carry you from office to Iftar: Ramadan is a unique experience and special time of year which results in a myriad of social gathering after sunset – look for pieces that can seamlessly transition from day to night. Max Fashion’s Garden Party collection features striking floral patterns that exude femininity with flowing trousers and draped chiffon tops. Simple and sophisticated prints strike the perfect balance between chic and stylish – accessorize these with a pair of statement earrings and heels for an elegant evening look. You will find feminine outfits in a striking color palette, that are comfortable enough to be worn all day long as well as stylish enough for a fancy Iftar out. 3. Don’t shy away from color: Whether it’s casualwear or formalwear, indulge in a bit of color. A feminine palette of dusty pink, mint green and mellow yellow are contrasted with jewel tones of ruby red, emerald green and classic black. Eye-catching prints such as florals, animals, chains and scarves in maxi dresses, blouses and palazzos help make a style statement this Ramadan.

Hans Van Den Broecke, Head of Buying at Max Fashion says: “The Ramadan collection offers a contemporary take on a timeless aesthetic for the modern generation, with a versatile range of dresses, tailored tops and trousers. These silhouettes are brought to life through a unique color palette, and floral prints are given a new take through embellished necklines and intricate lace detailing with the maxi and midi dress being a key shape for the season. The outfits have been designed with the Middle Eastern customers in mind to offer contemporary style and a flattering fit.” As fashion enthusiasts become more open to new styles, Max Fashion’s collections present classic fashion in a mix-and-match approach, to suit different lifestyles. 4. Anchor your kids’ Ramadan look with tranquil shades and fabrics: Dress your little darlings with minimum energy and maximum versatility. Inject some playfulness into the mix with fun motifs and flashes of cool colors. Max Fashion’s Ramadan collection for kids offers girls many opportunities to shine with elegant florals, pink and bright honey yellows, subtle sequins and patterns coming in an array of pretty pink, mint, white and black hues. For boys, the range includes printed tees, smart polos and funky casual shirts as well as trousers, summer shorts and jeans. 5. Stick to the basics: When it comes to color for men, white, black and gray are simply more useful and versatile compared to others. Max Fashion’s Ramadan collection for men features crisp shirts and chinos for a smart look, and tees with joggers and light jackets for a super cool casual look.

Sweet Ramadan BY FARAH ALOTHAIM
As we are approaching the holy month of Ramadan, many delicious sweets come to mind. The seasonal desserts add a special flavor to Ramadan as many wait for this month to indulge in their favorite kind of sweets. The following list contains some of the most popular and delicious sweets during this special season.
Luqimat
Luqimat is a traditional dessert that is popular in Saudi Arabia and strongly tied with Ramadan. It is made of dough that is fried and dazzled with dates syrup or honey. The best pairing with Luqimat is Arabic coffee. It should always be served fresh and eaten upon serving. The perfect texture is crunchy, sweet, and fluffy. A few years ago, luqimat became a trendy dessert and many shops that are dedicated to these doughy balls have put their own flavorful twists to it. They have added chocolate, pistachio syrup, and other interesting, unique flavors that are turning this traditional dessert modern.
WHERE TO GET LUQIMAT: HARAT ALLUQAIMAT • LUQAIMAT TUF • SHAHAD PASTRY • ROZANA LOUNGE
Kanafeh
Kanafeh is a Mediterranean dessert that originated from Nabuls in Palestine. It is made of fine semolina dough stuffed with cheese, lebnah (clotted cheese) and topped with crushed pistachio. Kanafeh is usually soaked in sugar-based syrup and often served hot. There are four popular types of kanafeh: rough, fine, mixed, and twined. The rough kanafeh is made from thin noodle threads, while the fine is made from semolina dough. The mix version is made of half rough and half fine while the twined is prepared with noodle-like pastry. You can choose any fillings with those four types. This dessert is enjoyed best with a cup of Turkish coffee.
WHERE TO GET KANAFEH: KONAFA TASTE • KUNAFAH ABUL HAUS • GOLDEN KUNAFA • AL AKER SWEETS • SAADEDDIN PASTRIES
36
Om Ali
EAT
Originating from Egypt and spread through many Arab countries, Om Ali’s literal meaning is Ali’s mother. Om Ali is prepared through cooking layers of puff pastry, adding some milk to it, and your favorite selection of nuts. Om Ali is similar to bread pudding and better enjoyed while it is warm. The texture of Om Ali is soggy as the milk adds richness to it and the nuts on top gives it some crunch. One bite of Om Ali and you will be hooked forever. Most types of coffee go well with Om Ali. However, since it is a heavy dessert, my recommendation is to eat it with black coffee.
WHERE TO GET OM ALI: SAUDI KITCHEN • LAMIS RESTAURANT • MAYRIG • BURJ AL HAMMAM BISTRO
Qatayef
Qatayef is most popular in Levant countries and Egypt. It is a layer of mini pancake stuffed with different fillings and garnished with pistachio. The top four popular fillings are cheese, custard, crushed nuts and clotted cheese. It can be served soft or crunchy, prepared half open or closed. Qatayef is usually covered with honey or rose water and better enjoyed with Arabic coffee.
WHERE TO GET QATAYEF: ARAFAT SWEETS• BURJ ALHAMMAM BISTRO • HABIBAH SWEETS • ALSAA BAKERY • PATISSERIE JAREER
Baklava
A traditional dessert that gained its popularity in the Middle East and Turkey, baklava is made of layers of thin dough, stuffed with nuts, and soaked in honey or sugar-based syrup. Baklava is delicate, has a flaky texture and rich in flavor. The dessert is usually cut into small pieces in a diamond shape and served with coffee. Baklava is never a one-piece only dessert, you will always end up eating more.
WHERE TO GET BAKLAVA: SAADEDDIN PASTRIES • LOKMA ISTANBUL • GULLUOGLU RESTAURANT • DIPLOMAT
With only a few days left until Ramadan, we will see more of those mouth-watering sweets in pastry shops. Many people line up to buy Luqimat right before maghrib prayer and it is a part of Ramadan breakfast essentials for most families in Saudi. While Kanafeh, Om Ali, Qatayef, and Baklava are usually enjoyed after dinner. Wishing you all a sweet celebration of Ramadan with your families and friends.
Uber Eats makes it easy for you to have these sweets this Ramadan. Download the Uber Eats app and order from the restaurants highlighted (in bold) in the list. Use the promo code DQLIVING to get 50% off your first two orders. Up to 30 SAR discount from Uber Eats! Valid until June 30, 2019.
Make The Most Out of Your DQ Visit BY THE DQ LIVING TEAM
With its awe-inspiring landscapes, architectural wonders, and gustatory destinations, the Diplomatic Quarter is one place you shouldn’t miss when you visit Riyadh. Check out our list of top 5 places when you check in at Riyadh’s most illustrious address. The Diplomatic Quarter (DQ) in Riyadh is known to be the home of foreign embassies, government establishments and residential areas. But more than that, guests to the DQ can discover a whole lot more of places and ways to spend their time. When you step out of Radisson Blu Hotel in the DQ, an array of places, activities and events await. Here are our recommended places you should check out when you check in to the DQ.
1. Al Fazari Plaza
The Radisson Blu’s The Larder Restaurant and Lounge is a great option when staying in the DQ. Its sophisticated interiors and scrumptious international and Middle Eastern cuisines will delight the senses. When you want to venture outdoors, DQ also has restaurants that serve international cuisines located in plazas. The Al Fazari Plaza, just outside Radisson Blu Hotel, is home to Scalini Restaurant offering both Italian and Japanese food. Pancake House offers breakfast fare while Kalamata serves scrumptious Middle Eastern grills. A quick mani and pedi for the ladies is also available in the Villa Blanca Spa. Being one of the first plazas in the DQ, Al Fazari has a certain nostalgic vibe to it. Those who crave for comfortable
38
and cozy venues to chill with families and friends will find this area of the DQ nice and charming. Another plaza to check out is Al Kindi with its more affordable dining options like fast food restos Kudu and Dairy Queen.
2. Oud Square
The newest plaza in the DQ is Oud Square. Its hip and modern vibe makes it the hangout of the youth. Restaurants like ca/le/ndar and Leila have unique and interesting concepts while iHOP, Draft and Urth Café are great brunch and coffee places. Nozomi, one of Riyadh’s notable Japanese restaurants, has also opened a pop-up in the plaza serving the best dishes on their menu. Oud Square is a trendy place to be at.
3. Parks and Gardens
In the busy DQ, “all work and no play” doesn’t always apply. With the DQ’s pockets of parks and gardens in its midst, you can get some fresh air and tranquility. Considered as one of the Kingdom’s earliest accomplishments of green architecture, the DQ offers its residents and guests a literal oasis of lush gardens, pathways, and picnic places. The biggest parks are Al Yamamah, Al Arudh and Rock Park. They are equipped with playgrounds, benches, and restrooms.
4. Hiking Trails
Found yourself some idle hours? Get active and check out the trails in the DQ! Start at the sign that reads “walking trail” and you can pretty much choose your path from there. Any trail with its picturesque streams to rocks to mini gardens will give you a solid hiking experience. You can walk, jog, run or even bike. It’s best to do these activities in the mornings.
5. Al Aghar Equestrian Club
How often can you see and ride horses when visiting a new place? The Al Aghar Equestrian Club, one of the largest equestrian clubs in Saudi Arabia and located inside the DQ, is open for horseback riding lessons suitable for all ages. They also have a multitude of facilities like function rooms for events and gatherings, guest rooms, outdoor café and swimming pool. Outside the equestrian club is a nice stream where you can capture photos. It’s one of the greener areas in the DQ where one can seek relaxation and relief while watching the water flow, leaves fall, and the sun set.
Other notable yet smaller parks include Al Nafal and General Park which will give you an opportunity to immerse more with nature. These parks and gardens have quaint ponds and waterfalls that lets you escape the hustle and bustle of the city life for a moment. After visiting the parks and on your way back to the hotel, you can also take a stroll and see the different embassies from the outside to marvel at their buildings’ designs. Most buildings in the DQ are made out of clay and adobe, a material known for its greater thermal mass which enables it to store and absorb heat. The designs of these buildings hold so much history, stories, and creativity. Definitely worth checking out along with Tuwaiq Palace. Make the most out of your stay at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Riyadh by discovering the Diplomatic Quarter! When you travel, take stories of new places along with your souvenirs.
Volunteer with WSB Connecting volunteers with service opportunities BY MARIA COMETTI
The Women’s Skills Bureau (WSB) is a grassroots organization founded almost 10 years ago by entrepreneur and philanthropist Sally Kennedy. The original mission of WSB was to help expatriate wives find purpose and thrive during their time in Riyadh. Through events, a monthly newsletter, and sharing opportunities, WSB has evolved into a network of over 7500 individuals and organizations. One of the most effective ways to discover a sense of purpose and community in a foreign country is through volunteering. Furthermore, even though many accompanying spouses in Riyadh are not able to work due

to visa restrictions, these men and women can offer unique skills and expertise to local charities, non-profits, and community causes. As Mrs. Kennedy explains, “volunteering as an expatriate is one of the few paths to connect, and find mutual values with our host country.” WSB Volunteer is the volunteer arm of the Women’s Skills Bureau that pairs expat and Saudi volunteers with local nonprofits. Led by international development specialist Yousra Harmouch, WSB Volunteer aims to have a positive impact on the community. As Mrs. Harmouch states “We believe that by helping to improve the relationships between volunteers and local non-profits, the community will become stronger and healthier” Over the past 6 months, WSB Volunteer has placed more than 26 volunteers in different partner organizations. Some of these organizations include, Amaleed for Education and Empowerment, Feed the Need, Sanad, El Nahda, Alhambra US Chamber, and Threefold for internet services. Other initiatives are currently underway, including an Innovation and Entrepreneurship project in collaboration with ICT service provider Detasad and a series of workshops to assist job seekers with CV writing, job search, and online studies. WSB understands that not all volunteers are able to make a long-term commitment, and organizes a “One Day Volunteer” Series. The most recent event was organized around distributing food bags at a camp for low income workers. Khuzama Park Jazzes It Up BY AEVAN CARO
On one laidback evening, the calm ambience of the Diplomatic Quarter’s open-air Khuzama Park was filled with soothing jazz music. In cooperation with the German Embassy and the Diplomatic Quarter General Authority, the German Jazz group, Johannes Bigge Trio, gave the DQ residents and guests a musical treat with their originals and some jazz classics last April 2, 2019. Dubbed as the German-Saudi Jazz Concert, the trio, headed by Johannes Bigge on piano, Athina Kontou on bass, and Maximilian Santner on drums, also featured Saudi jazz soloist Nawaf. “It was a big honor to be part of this. We loved the audience whom we felt was very open in appreciating our music,” said Johannes who fell in love with Arabic food and looks forward to coming back. The jazz trio performed tracks from their albums “Imago” and “Pegasus” and shared the stage with Nawaf who wowed the crowd by belting out an Etta James classic “At Last” at the beginning of his set. “We love Nawaf’s singing,” said Johannes, “He has a fantastic talent, great stage presence, and unique color in his voice.” With only a day and a half to rehearse as a group, it did not hinder them to entertain their audience. “It was the harmony among us and the ultimate understanding of our musicality,” according to Nawaf who
describes the concert as an experience of his lifetime. “Two different countries, four different musicians, yet we came together like one.” With this collaboration, music, indeed, is a universal language. 53

Netherlands Embassy Hosts Falcon Arts Festival On April 16 and 17, 2019, the Embassy of the Netherlands hosted the Falcon Arts Festival. More than 30 Saudi movies were screened and there were performances by a Saudi rap group and a female Saudi graffiti artist. The great success of the 2018 Golden Falcon Film Festival led to the ambition of organizing an even better festival in 2019. The new name reflected this ambition: not only film, but also other forms of art were displayed. However, the focus remained on Saudi-made movies. Last year’s edition showed that the Saudi film industry is thriving. Saudi Arabia is rediscovering itself with fantastic initiatives. The unique history and cultural richness of KSA provide a rich source of inspiration for local artists. Through this year’s edition, the Netherlands embassy hoped to contribute, at least to a small extent, to the creative boom of the Saudi entertainment sector. Joost Reijntjes, ambassador of the Netherlands in KSA, emphasized that “Although cinemas have only been re-opened recently, the Saudi filmmaking industry has already made quite a name for itself on the international stage”. According to Jeroen Gankema, the director of the festival, movies ‘are a fantastic way to connect people’. The Effat University Film Program has been an important partner for this edition of the Falcon Arts Festival, provid-
54
ing several high quality student films. The University’s Visual and Digital Production Program is the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia and was launched in 2013-2014. The shows featured included Noura bin Saidan, the first graffiti artist girl in Riyadh, who performed a live art in public. She has participated in many international and local events and has gained extensive graffiti experience in both London and Barcelona. Min Al Riyadh, the Saudi Jazz Fusion Band was also featured.

British Embassy Staff / Blogger Over 10,000 residents call the DQ home. Meet Your Neighbor profiles interesting people in our international DQ Community. Learn about the diverse experience, interests, and backgrounds of DQ dwellers. Read on, and Meet Your Neighbor.
How would you describe yourself in five words Happy, positive, joyful, and have love in my life! Tell us about your career. I currently work at the British Embassy - which I really enjoy - working with a great team within the Department for International Trade. In the past, I ran my own training business for 20 years, where we trained journalists, designers and creative people. Having my own business kept my career active while I moved around the world as an army wife following my husband. What hobbies are you into? I’m into yoga and meditation which help me keep a sense of calm and relaxation. I write in my website http://findingthejoy. info/. It’s my medium to spread love, kindness, wonder and joy. I also go camping and spend most of my time with my family and friends. Tell us about your experience in moving to the Kingdom I am from the UK and I’ve been living in Saudi Arabia for nine amazing years now. My husband Peter was offered a job in Riyadh in 2010 and we followed. Our four teenage children, Ryan, Vicki, Soph and Will, were excited at the thought of coming to stay with us during their school holidays and have fun in the sun! What changes have you seen in Riyadh since you first came here? We have watched the evolvement of social change and the impact of Vision 2030! I’ve noticed the ease of access through the airports, the fast growth of the city with new compounds, restaurants and shopping areas popping
up almost daily, visible signs of the new metro (can’t wait to travel on it, it’s something my husband is working on), restoration of Dir’ayah UNESCO site and Al Bujairi Square and so much more. What were your first impressions of the DQ? I’ve been living in the DQ for 3 and a half years and it’s been amazing! The DQ is such a relaxed, green space where we can walk freely and enjoy the amenities, spas, parks, trails and buzz of Oud Square! I love it! What’s your day like in the DQ? Every morning starts with a loving cup of tea brought to me by my husband followed by 20 minutes of yoga. Depending on the heat outside, my commute to work is either a 25 minute walk or a 7 minute car ride. I am so excited to be driving now! My day is often full of internal / external meetings and it’s great to have the option to hold some of these at the new cafes and hotels in the DQ, makes it so easy! After work or over the weekend, we enjoy having our friends over at home, eat out and sometimes I go to Al Manihil, Four Spa and Oz Yoga. What more could one want to relax! What do you like most about the DQ? The green parks and their symmetry, the happy buzz around Oud Square, being able to walk without an abaya, and everything is within easy walking/cycling/driving distance. What is something you wish the DQ had, but currently doesn’t? A bakery, a rickshaw style local taxi service and a resident permit for getting in and out of DQ security with ease. Where are your favorite places to visit in Riyadh? Old Dir’ayah, Karim Beirut restaurant, La Cucina restaurant, the Riyadh Metro Visitor Centre, the gold souk – we all love that! Horse racing at the weekend is another family favorite.
