RIYADH

SUMMER BY JANELLE VALES-YASAY & REINA TEJANO-BERINA

The spirit of summer is, no doubt, at an all-time high these months of July and August in Riyadh. While some of you choose to escape the heat in cooler places outside the Kingdom, those who choose to stay can still plan for an enjoyable and fun summer with these list of exciting indoor activities that are taking the city by the heat wave! At DQ Living, we know what you can do this summer!

GO TO THE MOVIES The big screens of VOX Cinemas have brightened up Riyadh’s entertainment scene, creating great moments for friends and family to enjoy. VOX Cinemas is a well-known name in the region when it comes to movie entertainment. Since the inauguration of their first branch in Riyadh last year, VOX has been instrumental in bringing in a variety of Hollywood blockbusters and Arabic movies to Saudi Arabia. They have also diversified their branches to feature each of their signature cinema concepts: from fun and casual to exclusive and luxurious. Their range of services give patrons the option of choosing their kind of movie-viewing experience. Booking for a ticket is done primarily online via their website or app but some branches offer on-site purchases should seats be still available. Their portals are updated every Sunday and Wednesday for upcoming show times and payments are accepted via credit/debit cards. Depending on the movies’ classification by the General Commission for Audiovisual Media (GCAM), there are some limitations for children’s viewing. Otherwise,

there are movie screenings solely dedicated to kids. The experience at VOX Cinemas has been a pleasing one so far. The service teams in particular are made up of young and cordial staff who man the concession stands and ticketing kiosks. The MAX and IMAX screens at Al Qasr Mall and Riyadh Park in particular stands out the most to me for its Dolby Surround Sound and 3D screenings, respectively. As soon as the movie finishes, the cleanup crew are quick to ensure that the theater is ready for the next batch of viewers. Owned and operated by Majid Al Futtaim Cinemas, the goal of Vox Cinemas is to eventually open a total of 110 screens in Saudi Arabia by the end of 2019. They have already begun expansion in Jeddah and Dammam. In the meantime, there are currently four branches in Riyadh, with more coming soon.

LINE UP FOR A STRIKE While video games have created digital versions of activities like bowling, there’s still a different kind of excitement (and exercise) that comes along with playing the real thing. So haul up your friends and family and pack some socks because here is a quick guide on where you can flex your bowling muscles for fun. Strike Bowling Alley (1.95 km from the DQ) Described as a “bowling lounge”, The Ritz-Carlton has managed to provide a bougie bowling experience with its six, well-manicured lanes set apart in twos. There is some festive lighting going on on the ceiling but the pin deck can use some form of light to be more visible. The couches are really comfortable and the juice bar at the back can keep everyone hydrated, for a price. Thursdays and Fridays are exclusive for families while rest of the week is open for all patrons. They also have a 100-inch TV where you can watch sports shows while waiting for your turn. Minimum charge of SAR 120 per person from Thursday to Saturday. SAR 50 per person per game from Sunday to Wednesday. Opening Hours: 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM. UBC Bowling (4.62 km from the DQ) The Universal Bowling Center is one of the OGs of the bowling scene in Riyadh and also the largest. It has a total of 30 lanes (12 for the Family Section and 18 for the Men’s Section) and has been known to be the go-to place for many serious/professional bowlers. Regional tournaments have been held here for decades. The facilities itself looks a little worn down through the years and even the score sheet graphics are non-existent but its reputation precedes itself. They do offer additional activities like the billiards, table tennis, arcades, air hockey and some video games. They have an in-house restaurant that serves snacks and a Dunkin Donuts nearby. Ticket Price: 25 SAR per person per game. Bowling shoes included. Opening Hours: 4:00 PM – 1:30 AM daily

Marina Bowling (7.83 km from the DQ) A smaller bowling joint beside the food court of Marina Mall, this space has seven lanes and a coffee shop nearby. Seating is very limited with minimal décor. Lighting is ample and the scoreboard is nothing fancy. While it was the first bowling alley incorporated inside a mall, it’s as simple as bowling areas can get. Ticket Price: SAR 26 per person per game. Opening Hours: 4:00 PM- 11:00 PM Yalla! Bowling (11.65 km from the DQ) This newest bowling spot is located at Al Qasr Mall, right beside VOX Cinemas. It has a total of eight lanes with a fun electronic score sheet that lets you take a selfie and animates it to various cartoon scenarios (whether you strike, split or spill over to the gutter). They have a spacious hall with lots of seating booths for you to enjoy their snack bar that sells pizzas, fries and a Starbucks. Background music is also being played so apart from the rolling balls, it may feel a bit noisy. Ticket Price: SAR 35 per person for 1 game; 135 SAR for a team of 4 persons per game. Bowling shoes included. Opening Hours: 4:00 PM- 11:00 PM WiFi Bowling (15.82 km from the DQ) They may only house a total of six lanes, but this bowling center in Ar Rayyan district is also home to several pool tables, an arcade, 3D virtual reality games and a two-level snack bar. It’s a quaint little spot where people can rent the space for their own personal tournaments or fun days. Lighting is pretty dim and would probably be more fitting for teenagers or adults who are young at heart. Ticket Price: SAR 40 per person for 1 game Opening Hours: 3:00 PM- 1:00 AM

DRIFT AND DRIVE AT DOOS KARTING

Rev up your engines, fasten your seatbelts and hold that steering wheel tight as the excitement turns to full gear at Doos Karting in 3…2…1! The race track is abuzz with speeding go karts. Drivers are donning helmets and safety straps while completing laps and you could feel their energies are high. Watching them go gets me excited and eager to try it out myself. I was standing inside the huge racing hub of Doos Karting – the first electric go karting venue in Saudi Arabia. Their 350-meter indoor race track is located at the Hiteen District, and it is fully air-conditioned. The rest of the karts are parked at bay and plugged into their respective stations. Teams are required to register at the reception and await orientation for the proper go kart use and safety measures. Once everyone is suited up in their riding uniforms and helmets, the race marshals will guide each rider to their karts and then the most awaited countdown to the finish line begins.

Each session goes on for 10 minutes and whoever gets the most laps within that time frame wins. To make things more photo-worthy, a title stage for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placers are there for a chance to pose with the prize: a prestigious bisht wrapped over the champion. Doos also offer certified training programs with the Turbo and Pro courses for those who want to upgrade their skill levels. Of course, these come with age and height requirements along with exceptional speeding potential.

Promotional rates until August 31: SAR 98 per adult; SAR 85 per child aged 8 to 12 years old. Doos Karting 8521 Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdula Aziz Rd Riyadh 13513 For more inquiries, contact: T: 920008311 Email: info@dooskarting.com Website: www.dooskarting.com Social Media: @dooskarting

It’s an activity that welcomes everyone. Men and children are welcome every Sunday, Tuesday and Friday; Women’s days are every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; while Saturdays are dedicated for the families.

PICK UP A BRUSH AND PAINT Painting is a daunting task, yes, but why not start with a ceramic? Sit down, relax, and paint at Café Ceramique. Café Ceramique in Sahara Mall lets you unleash your inner artist, or at least your children’s. They offer a variety of ceramics from animal shapes to plates to mugs and even Riyadh landmarks like the Kingdom Tower and Faisaliah Tower. After choosing a ceramic, you then choose the paint colors you want to use for your masterpiece. Several brushes of different sizes are already prepared in each table. It’s quite fun to visualize the pattern you want to draw and paint. There are pamphlet guides that give tips for better application and effect. If you’re a kid though, just go for it. Sometimes, unplanned drawings and paintings make the most interesting artwork. The whole experience is very relaxing and calming. It keeps one’s mind focused at the task at hand. During our recent visit here, we chose a travel mug to paint and we painted for at least three hours without thinking of the time. We were lost in the moment and we enjoyed it. Painting is an expression of ideas and emotions and even if we’re not pros, we were proud of our project. We felt like artists for a while. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush in your life; everyone is welcome in this part art studio and part café venue. For kids, this will definitely keep them interested and immersed for a while. Yes, it can get messy but they learn a lot from

this activity. The best part? It’s indoors and you and your children can paint to your heart’s content. While at it, you can also enjoy the sandwiches and drinks that the restaurant offers. It will take seven days to get your work of art because the ceramic needs to be baked and glazed. Return for it and you’ll have something you can display or use after. This is one relaxing activity during summer that you and your kids can enjoy. Apart from their branch in Sahara Mall, they recently opened a new one along King Fahd Road. It’s never too late to widen your imagination, unleash your creativity and paint. OUTWIT AND ESCAPE THESE ROOMS The clock is ticking! You have one hour to figure out an escape route with the help of clues. Your problem-solving skill is in overdrive, your mind is bursting with ideas and your heart is pumping fast. You and your friends have to get out of this room alive! Of course you do! Get out alive, I mean. But within the time limit, now that’s the challenge of an escape room. Riyadh has seen the rise of escape rooms as the world gets introduced to this live-action team-based game where players unite to decipher clues, solve puzzles, and finish tasks in one room to accomplish a goal in a limited amount of time. Most likely that goal is to escape the room. What makes being stuck in a room for one hour with family or friends appealing? It doesn’t involve going out into the sun this summer! Haha. Kidding aside, it’s totally fun! It’s a thrilling adventure that lets players uncover make-believe worlds, especially when these rooms give life to characters that we’ve just read about. Take for example Sherlock Holmes, the fictional private detective written about by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He is the subject of Escape Arabia’s most popular room. In this live escape game, Detective Sherlock Holmes has been kidnapped. Players need to find his famous pipe to go to the police, “save” Sherlock and ultimately, escape the room. There were so many challenges in this room that left us baffled and when we first tried it, we weren’t able to escape on time. We had better luck in their other rooms: The Taken Room, where one player will be locked while the others solve puzzles to free him, and Area 51, where conspiracies abound and players have to unravel the truth behind it.

Break Out, probably the first escape room game in the city, also has a Sherlock-inspired escape room named after the detective’s address: 221B Baker St. Their rooms are sophisticated and well-thought of. The Secret Room in Othman Bin Affan Road also has their own Sherlock Holmes Investigation Office. But try something different and try their Jack Sparrow Warehouse. Play in teams of 2 up to 6 persons. Escape The Room, on the other hand, has all the excitement packed in their rooms Mafia Kingdom and The Prison. Talk about literal “escape”! While these venues are already away from the city, venture further and find Escape Mission which features The Lab of Dr. Fizz where finding the secret blood serum of the mad scientist is a must to escape and The Joker Room that brings players to Gotham City. Ahaji, the newest establishment of this kind in the city, incorporated some Arabic flare in their rooms named Uncle Saleh and Pyramids. So many options, so little time! As a fan of mystery novels and the game show Crystal Maze when I was a kid, the escape room games greatly appeal to me. If it’s also your thing, you’ll definitely have fun with the escape rooms in Riyadh. Prices are around SAR 130 per person, depending on how many you are playing the room. The more of you, the lower the cost. It’s a great way to bond with your family, friends, and colleagues this summer! M

orocco is known for its coast, culture and history. It is known for the freshness of its palm groves and gardens, the liveliness of its souks and squares, and the richness of its mosques and palaces. Morocco, alone, brings together great wealth and a real cultural diversity. Morocco’s culture is shaped by its identity and history. In each imperial city, there are places full of memories that speak of a universal heritage. Morocco’s magnificent, beautifullydecorated museums and mosques are true works of art. The history of Morocco is rich, thanks to the influence of several civilizations and cultures. Archaeological diversity, translated throughout the Moroccan territory into monuments, buildings and ruins, is the result of the plurality of these civilizations. A land of cultural and artistic encounters, Morocco offers its expertise to all kinds of human creation, celebrated through the many festivals dedicated to different modes of expression it hosts. Festivals in Morocco are among the best and most interesting in the world. Morocco’s well-known cities offer some unique events, often under the banner of dialogue among the cultures of East and West. A friendly atmosphere prevails during the Gnawa Festival, the World Music Festival, the Festival of Sacred Music, the Timitar Music Festival or the Festival of Mawazine. While the embroidered textiles, ceramics, jewellery, woodcarvings and leather goods are real treasures of Moroccan handicrafts, the Moroccan cuisine is universally recognized as one of the few cuisines that preserved its authenticity dating back over 2000 years. Moroccan cuisine is a celebration of components rich in flavors, aromas and colors. Its perfumes and sweet-savory associations are world-renowned.

Where To Go Situated at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, the imperial city of Marrakech is noisy, atmospheric and full of history. There's a lot to see and do, from sampling traditional Moroccan street food at the nightly market in Djemma el Fna to shopping for spices and artisan jewelry in the atmospheric souks of the medina. For the most authentic Marrakech experience, consider staying in a traditional riad within the medina walls. Medieval Fez served as Morocco's capital for more than 400 years and is still an important religious and cultural center. It is best explored on foot and includes the Quaraouiyine mosque and its associated university, which is the oldest in the world. Other highlights include the Chaouwara Tanneries, the Merenid Tombs and the Mellah or Jewish Quarter. Tangier is the gateway to Africa for those traveling by sea from southern Europe. Highlights include the medina, the Kasbah Museum and the French-inspired Ville Nouvelle. The harbor also offers interesting views of the Strait of Gibraltar and distant Spain, while a short drive away from the city center reveals some pretty beaches. After much of it was destroyed in the earthquake in 1960, including various of its heritage sites, Agadir has finally managed to rise from the ashes. It is now a thriving seaside resort town with a beautiful waterfront and a chill vibe whichever direction you head in. Exploring Morocco’s Atlas Mountains without a guide may mean missing out on Berber culture and scenic viewpoints. Private tours enable interaction with Berber villagers, and the flexibility to personalize your itinerary.

What To Do Explore the imperial cities. Each of Morocco’s four imperial cities offers a wealth of experiences and attractions: the splendor of Marrakesh’s historical sites, the striking architecture of Fez, the contrast of old and new of Rabat, and the calmness of Meknes. Morocco has many splendid beaches that offer a combination of relaxation and active water sports. Indeed, touring the coastlines that stretches along the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea is an adventure on its own. Learn to cook your favorite Moroccan dishes like tagine, couscous, salads, harira, and pastilla from small, cozy cooking classes in the cities. While at it, drink loads of Moroccan tea too. Relax, cleanse, and ease away any aches and pains with a visit to a traditional Moroccan hammam, you’ll find one in almost every neighbourhood around the country. Marvel at Morocco’s amazing historical kasbahs that characterized by its beautiful appearance and their history. They are the guardians of most of kingdom’s historical relics. These ancient fortified castles and their grandiose ramparts do not cease to attract many travelers and tourists.

About the Ambassador

Mustapha Mansouri Embassy of Morocco How did you start being a diplomat? I held the position of minister on several occasions and as a former President of the Moroccan Parliament, I had practiced official diplomacy and parliamentary diplomacy respectively. As Minister of Employment and Social Affairs, I had the opportunity to experience trade union diplomacy. My acquaintance with diplomacy is long standing.

Tell us about your experience as Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. What does your job as Ambassador entail? It is a very exciting and rewarding job if we consider the different fields of activity in which we evolve. Apart from the daily administrative work within the Embassy, we have to manage the day-to-day affairs of the Moroccan community and solve the problems they face.

When were you posted to Saudi Arabia? And how long have you been in Riyadh? His Majesty the King of Morocco granted me a great honor by appointing me in April 2018 as the Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It has been almost a year since I started my mission in Riyadh and I am very delighted with it.

In addition, we conduct parallel activities with a view to encouraging potential investors to invest in Morocco. We also manage all affairs and activities relating to the promotion of cooperation between our two countries in all areas.

What were your reactions / thoughts / feelings when you were asked to become Ambassador to Saudi Arabia? My appointment as Ambassador of His Majesty the King to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a great honor for me. As you know, Saudi Arabia is considered by His Majesty the King of Morocco as a dear brotherly country and a very close friend with which we have nurtured and maintained very strong and diversified long-standing relations. Our two kingdoms have always had very cordial ties under our successive monarchs, and the bonds between our two peoples are both friendly and solid. In addition, Moroccans who are known for their deep piety and strong attachment to Islam maintain a very special link with the Holy Places (Mecca and Medina), and every year, over 32,000 Moroccans arrive in the Kingdom to perform their pilgrimage, not to mention tens of thousands of others who come to the country for Umrah all year long. What do you like most about life in Riyadh? Personally, I am impressed by the development of the city of Riyadh, which I had the opportunity to visit in the early 2000. Today, the city is emerging as an important crosSARoad in the Middle East. Infrastructure works, urban planning, the rehabilitation of the city's cultural heritage and the increasingly important offer of entertainment will bring Riyadh to the forefront of beautiful cities across the Middle East Region.

This job is particularly rewarding as it allows you to nurture new human relations and promote mutual understanding, exchange and dialogue among peoples and governments. Favorite places to visit in Riyadh? Riyadh is very rich city in terms of places of interest. I really like Ad Diriyah, an attractive different site away from downtown Riyadh. Other places are also worth visiting, such as the Flower Fields, the Edge of the World, Rawdat Khuraim, Wadi Hanifa and more. You just need to make time to enjoy these beautiful places. What do you like most about DQ? The Diplomatic Quarter (DQ) is a very nice neighborhood that has most of the amenities necessary for the well-being of its residents. In addition, the innovative project initiated by the DQ Authority will surely and profoundly transform the neighborhood and place it at the forefront of the most beautiful districts of Riyadh.

REFRESH

FOR RIYADH'S SUMMER

Nothing is more refreshing than a cool drink on a hot summer day. While water is important for staying hydrated in this blazing heat, Marriott Hotel DQ has prepared an exquisite selection of drinks just for this summer that will not only quench your thirst but keep you cool and hydrated.

In the pursuit of trying to re-create the perfect lemonade, we present to you our most requested drink Healthy Green; the perfect blend of freshly-squeezed lemon juice and hydrating cucumber juice mixed with green apple juice to add some extra sourness balanced off with a dash of sweet fennel syrup - the ideal drink for the summer.

Our chef’s first choice for a refreshing summer drink is the Iced Lemon Tea with Rosemary, Assam & Rosemary. Made specially for our iced tea lovers with fresh and earthy, herbal black tea and zesty lemon juice blended with just the right amount of tangy grapefruit juice topped off with dried rosemary to give a distinctive sharp flavor.

Enjoy the sunset view by the pool with a floral cocktail like Desert Rose. Made with sweet and floral tangy hibiscus syrup, sugary tart pomegranate and fresh lemon juice with a dash of rosewater for a rosy aroma. To spice it up, a pinch of ginger is added to finish.

We have also created an exquisite coffee drink for our coffee enthusiasts this summer, the Spiced Coffee. An espresso double shot created with espresso-fine grounds with a subtle hint of mixed spices together with super sweet all-natural honey topped with star anise for that extra bit of sweet and spicy.

Keeping Up With

Summer BY FARIHA ESHRAT, MBBS

A short guide to the most common summer health concerns to help you stay safe as you enjoy the season.

As you prepare for the fun summer days with your family and friends, it is important to be mindful of the most common summer health concerns and how to stay a step ahead of them. Limit direct sun exposure. It is recommended that you limit direct sun exposure between 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM during these long summer days. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends an SPF of 30+ to protect you from the harmful effects of both UVA and UVB rays. Also be sure to look for water resistant sunscreens as sweat and swimming can decrease their effectiveness. Most adults need to reapply at least 1 ounce every two hours. Wearing a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses while you're out during these hours will also protect your face, neck and eyes. Be sure to put on loose, light and breathable clothing, like cotton and other natural fabrics to allow your body to stay cooler. In case of sunburn, soak your skin in cool water or put a cool, wet cloth on it. For pain control, you may use Tylenol or Panadol and for itch control, Benadryl and antihistamine creams will help. Be sure to apply some aloe cream or gel to reduce redness and irritation of your skin and get relief. These medications are all over-the-counter at your local pharmacy. 26

Beware of insects. Mosquitoes and sandflies can both be troublesome insects. Be sure to keep insect repellent creams and sprays on hand. For already inflamed bites on your skin, antihistamine creams are often helpful in providing relief.

HEALTH

Wasps and bees can also be troublesome. To treat a wasp sting, use vinegar. For bee stings, apply some baking soda. Next, reduce the inflammation with some soothing calamine lotion and an ice. Although this may help you feel much better, for persistent and severe symptoms, you may need medical assistance. Avoid food poisoning. As the temperatures rise, it is easier for food to spoil. Keep food covered and remember to place them in the fridge as soon as you are done eating. Defrosting frozen foods thoroughly in the fridge before cooking and also marinating your meats in the fridge can decrease your risk of getting food poisoning. Also, be sure to wash hands between handling raw poultry and anything else. As we also start to take out our grills, cleaning thoroughly before and after use and using a food thermometer to check the grilled meat temperatures during your next BBQ will go a long way in helping you avoid unwanted infections. Hydrate. Staying hydrated is vital during this season. As the heat rises, excessive sweating can reduce your body's water and electrolytes, making you feel less energetic. Hydrate yourself with the amazing local summer fresh produce, fresh juices, slushies, and flavoured water with lemons, kiwi or fruits of your choice. Drinking 1.5-2 litres of water a day (6-8 glasses) is an average estimate, but for most people, your feelings of thirst and your urine are the most reliable indicators of how much water you need to drink. Exercise moderately. Getting in your weekly 150 minutes of moderate to high intensity workout is important regardless of the weather. However, exercise in moderation, make sure to hydrate sufficiently and be conscious of overexertion. Plan more indoor activities during the hottest hours of the day and do the most strenuous activities during the coolest hours. Water workouts such as swimming are another great way to get in your exercise during this season. Be careful of heat stroke which can happen at high temperatures, high humidity and vigorous exertion. Relax. The summer season is a great opportunity to relax. Rejuvenate your mind on a personal vacation or even local trip to unwind, disconnect from the stresses of work life and spend some quality time with your loved ones. Stress is a growing health concern and every opportunity to regain your emotional strength counts. References: CDC, NIH, WedMD, Cleveland Clinic Summer Health Circular/Bulletin

NO EQUIPMENT? NO PROBLEM! BY HANNAH MERAKI

Summer is upon us and you may still want to get in shape before you travel, or more importantly get in shape for yourself and your health. So if you haven’t got much time to go to the gym and don’t really know where to start then this workout has you covered.

This “no equipment, full body workout” will get you going and has a bit more focus on the core and back of the legs, which for most are quite weak due to a lot of sitting and inactivity. It will only take you 18 minutes, so why not try it!

It’s for all levels as you can make it a bit easier or harder with the suggestions below. Do each exercise for 1 minute then straight away go onto the next. After you complete all 5, take a one-minute rest. Complete at least 3 rounds of this. LET'S GO!

1.NO JUMP BURPEE

No one likes burpees so taking out the jumps makes it more palatable, but don’t underestimate it though, it will still get your heart going. Simply reach up to the ceiling with your arms, then reach to the floor and place your hands down. Step both legs out into a plank position, then step both legs back in, stand up, and reach for the ceiling again. Repeat for 1 minute.

Do exactly as it says! Easy: Walk up and down the stairs. Hard: Run up and down the stairs. No stairs? March or jog on the spot. Repeat for 1 minute.

You can reach Hannah at either her Instagram or website below. If you have any questions about the workout, she’ll be more than happy to help! Instagram: @hannahmeraki Website: www.MerakiMovement.org

2.UP & DOWN THE STAIRS

DO

3.PLANK Ideally, your shoulders should be over your hands, and legs straight with hips that are not too high or low. Easy: Bring your knees to the floor or even under your hips so you are in a box shape. Hard: Legs straight and have a slight ‘tuck’ in the pelvis to engage your obliques more. Hold for 1 minute.

5.REACH FOR YOUR TOES

4.REVERSE LUNGES Stand on the spot then step one leg behind you, bend both knees as you do so into a lunge. Then bring that leg back to center and do on the other side. Repeat for 1 minute, alternating legs each time.

Take a one-minute rest, then repeat the circuit again. Remember to have a light stretch before and after to prepare the body for movement and to release any tension from working out. Enjoy!

Lie on your back with your legs reaching to the ceiling as straight as you can. Reach your arms and upper body upwards towards your feet. Keep shoulders off the floor the whole time, creating a pulse action as you reach up and lower slightly. Repeat for 1 minute.

Soho Chic in the City BY ALYAA MALIK

The name “Soho Club” is enough to intrigue you, but the chic food and upbeat atmosphere will invite you to stay.

A

t the beating heart of the city center is an intriguing façade filled with enormous light bulbs, powerfully glowing inside big letters that spell “Soho Club.” It’s hard to miss it if you’re passing by Tahlia Street, especially at night. The name itself was enough to strike my interest and while we all know there’s no real “club” in Saudi Arabia, it warranted my curiosity enough to enter and see what it’s all about. In Manhattan, Soho is a neighborhood known as the inner sanctum for artistic minds. In Riyadh, the Soho Club seem to inspire the same as its namesake – eccentric, creative and somewhat flamboyant. Inside, there’s a decorative scaffolding by the beverage bar adorned with more brightlylit bulbs. A large wooden table in the middle holds a number of candelabras, each with melting red candles, its wax deliberately dripping below for a dramatic effect. The ceiling provides a subtle centerpiece to the dining area, showcasing a hand-painted artwork that combines calligraphy and color. While the whole space would appear slightly dim, a small corner on one the side hosts a chandelier and some musical instruments. It is where invited musicians would perform at Soho Club at least once a week. Meanwhile, a mural of a renaissance dog overlooks it from a distance (everyone who comes to Soho Club takes a photo of it). The creative vibe makes it way to the food presentation with appetizers like Cappuccino Soup and Buffalo Chicken Cone, with the first being a tomato soup sipped in a coffee mug and the latter being a large waffle cone stuffed with chicken cutlets. Their menu is generally casual with appetizers, burgers, salads and a few main courses. The Mushroom Poppers, Chicken Wings and Soho Fries in particular come as highly recommended with its savory flavors and food for all qualities. Their bestselling salads include the Berry Quinoa Salad and the Kale, Date and Truffle Salad, which were as attractive as they were delicious. For the craving carnivores, their Smoked Brisket and

EAT

smoked ribs have got you covered. Their burgers and sliders are also a huge hit. The patties, whether beef or chicken, are juicy and flavorful. The bread is soft yet firm enough to hold the components. It's no wonder their brugers and sandwiches are considered as the restaurant's bestsellers. If you are a sweet tooth, then the Soho Shakes will definitely get you excited. The Rumma Mia and the Charlie & The Chocolate Factory shakes were both deliberately designed with candies, chocolates, jelly beans and even cotton candy! The best thing about them were despite their cloying looks, the milkshake itself weren’t overwhelmingly sweet. We bet kids (and kids at heart) will enjoy these drinks. The restaurants’ cool and cozy atmosphere makes it conducive for lounging and chilling in the middle of a busy city. On some evenings, they would have musicians over for a little entertainment. It’s a place where you can laugh out loud, have a good time and be surrounded by art. Upcoming performers are announced on their social media two days before. For bookings, you may call 92002690.

The Inside Scoop BY NAUREEN AHMED

This summer, we want freshness and lightness, creaminess that can only come from a cold, refreshing ice cream or gelato. We have the scoop on where to best get them in Riyadh.

CIOCCOLAT ITALIANI It seems like chocolate makers also make good ice cream makers. They have the fine ingredients already after all. Cioccolat Italiani has been serving sweet treats for the people of RIyadh for years and one of their most beloved product is their gourmet ice cream. Carefully flavored and made, they have a nice texture, Instagram-worthy looks, and a variety of flavors. Try the chocolate, pistachio, and salted caramel.

GIOVANNI L. This gelato company made a commitment to quality with their motto, “Just a bit more of the very best.” And you can’t get wrong with their many flavors of ice cream that uses the freshest and high-quality ingredients: the most exquisite fruits, full-flavored chocolates, and crispy nuts. Their classic varieties are year-round favorites while their royal varieties are leveled up by exclusive ingredients and elaborate recipes. We say get the Sicilian Pistachio Verde, Chocolate VIC, and Straciatella. 38

Desserts Come After GODIVA Godiva is known as the premier maker of fine Belgian chocolates since 1926. Its rich chocolate is unparalleled in smoothness and delicateness. These textures are also lent to their ice cream. The swirls of soft serve either vanilla, chocolate or both are not only picture-perfect and mouth-watering… they’re really good! The cone rimmed with chocolate and nuts embodies the same attention to detail that Godiva is proud of.

SERAFINA Serafina, the Northern Italian restaurant, features many Italian family recipes that are passed down from one generation to the next. Apart from their savory and delicious pizzas and pastas, Serafina has an extensive list of desserts which includes gelato. Dreamy in its creaminess, their gelato has the right density and texture. Their spicy hazelnut gelato had us at first scoop!

Ice cream cravings satisfied when you’re on the go.

After a hearty main course, there’s no saying no to a cup of Piatto’s gelato. Theirs is hand-crafted, housemade the old-fashioned way. The fruits and spices they use are sourced locally. While the fruits are the spotlight in their Mango, Strawberry, and Lemon flavors, my fave is their Marshmallow Bubble Gum flavor which churns memories of my childhood.

Jazzing

FEATURE

Up Riyadh BY YANA MURASH

The spring and summer nights in Riyadh have become great opportunities to see the live jazz & saxophone band led by Sudanese sax player Aiman Nour. Aiman is a great sax player bringing emotions and passion to his music. Jazz Nights became a popular night music entertainment in Riyadh and we shall be seeing more of his performances. Tell us more about yourself. I am from a lovely city called Kosti in the central province of Sudan; an amazing place full of fun and kindness. The people are very simple and humble. When they welcome you, you will feel really special. Where can we hear your music? I am currently playing at the Four Seasons Hotel in the Kingdom Tower. You can also find me at Nozomi Restaurant and also in AlKhozama Hotel and Hilton Hotel & Residences. Where did you learn to play the saxophone? I began my music career 18 years ago. I first played flute and after a while, I started to play the saxophone. What kind of saxophone do you play and why did you choose it? There are so many kinds of saxophones. Soprano Sax is the smallest and the Alsto is a bigger instrument. The Tenor is my favorite because I like how it sounds. The tones make it a very fascinating instrument; its sounds can take listeners to places. Do you have a favorite saxophonist? My favorite saxophone player is not very popular but he is very talented. His name is Warren Hill from Canada. I also enjoy my friend Mahmoud Mustafa’s music. He is a fellow Sudanese saxophonist. 40

Do you usually play solo or with a group? I like to play both ways: as solo or with other musicians. Of course, with other musicians, I need more practice with the group to find harmony together. It needs lots of effort and many workshops. How do you see the music industry across the Kingdom? The music industry in the Kingdom is growing but growing slowly. It needs more time and effort to expand. I wish it could be included in school curriculum so that it can grow faster. Where is your dream location to play at? There are so many places that I dream to play, such as the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Riyadh, the Royal Court, the Diplomatic Quarter where I played twice at the Italian Embassy‌ however, generally, every place matters to me. The most important is to play perfectly and to give the audience the best concert. It is my dream to play my music internationally and I will pursue it. I hope one day I can go for it.

Describe your personality in 5 words. Ambitious, Outgoing, Extroverted, Adventurer, and Traveler, I enjoy meeting new people from different places and connecting with them through culture, tradition, history, and food. I also enjoy being outdoors and trying new things that scare me. What hobbies are you into? Why do you love doing it/them? I love to travel. I have spent my entire life traveling the world. I have lived in 6 countries and visited many more. I enjoy travel to experience different cultures. I am also into photography. I started the hobby when I was living in New York City and would always be capturing something unique. You can see some of my photos on my Instagram (@mohammadali921). I also play soccer. I moved to England when I was 6 years old and will never forget the soccer culture. It was more than just a sport. It was a way of life and I began to support Manchester United. I loved how the game could bring people from all backgrounds together and for 90 minutes, the only thing that mattered was a ball. From which country are you from? I was born in Pakistan but only lived there for 6 years. I spent the rest of my life abroad and have lived in England, Romania, Mexico, United States, and Saudi Arabia. What brought you to Riyadh? I came to Riyadh about 6 months ago. I am visiting my family who lives here (my father is an ambassador). I’m also currently looking for a job.

What changes have you seen/experienced in Riyadh since you first came here up to now/today? I have only been here for 6 months but one of the notable changes I have seen is the number of foreign celebrities coming to Saudi (singers, wrestlers, soccer stars, etc.). I grew up watching WWE and to see the superstars in Saudi was an incredible experience. What were your first impressions of the DQ? The Diplomatic Quarter is very impressive. I really like the close knit community and family-oriented aspect of the DQ. It’s very easy to meet new people and connect with other expats. I was also impressed by the running paths, parks, and community centers such as Oud Square, Kindi Plaza, and Tuwaiq Palace. What’s your day like in the DQ? I usually wake up around 9 in the morning and go to the gym. After that, I come home and eat lunch and then spend most of the day in Oud Square working on an app with a friend that will connect locals and expats to events in Saudi. The app will be called “Aware” and it will be available for both iOS and Android soon. After working on the app, I try to do some photography followed by a run with a DQ running group. What is something you wish the DQ had, but currently doesn’t? I would really like to see some more community and embassy events that bring expats together. I would love to learn more about some of the countries that are represented in the DQ. I hope they create a monthly international fair where one country can share its culture, history, food, tradition with the residents of DQ and Riyadh. Where are your favorite places to visit in Riyadh? I like visiting Diriyah, Kingdom Tower, Arch of Riyadh, the malls and the sand dunes. Any tips/recommendations/advice for your DQ neighbors? I would highly recommend going out and meeting as many people as you can.
