Riyadh's Retail
Revolution
BY REINA TEJANO-BERINA
Shopping in Saudi Arabia has proven to be more than just an act of purchasing goods – it is a recreational hobby for most people – and the mall culture here is a fundamental part of one’s lifestyle. From the treasured traditional souks to the upscale, modern malls and now towards a blooming e-commerce market, Riyadh’s retail industry is on the move. 7
F
rom the bright lights of spacious stores to the vibrant colors of multiple displays of merchandise, shopping malls should be considered modern wonders of the world. It is where people from all walks of life come together and find sanctuary in the confines of a large “mothership” as I like to call it. Whether it’s window shopping or a millionaire’s blow out, there’s no doubt that shopping is the easiest way to indulge our wants and needs as a retreat from our busy lives, especially here in Saudi Arabia.
This habit has grown well-into modern-day times as the popularity of mall centers began to flourish in the Kingdom by the 90s. Once a significant go-to spot was Al Akaria Mall along Olaya St., which is the first ever mall in the Middle East. It had a modest selection of clothing stores – most of which were local brands, and a few food stalls. In the year 2000s, a major step that upped the mall culture of Riyadh was the construction of Al Faisaliah Tower and Kingdom Centre which served as both commercial and office spaces. They instantly
Shopping History The marketplace or “souks” has always been marked in history as a gathering place not just for merchants, but also for those seeking engagement with their community. Local trade of livestock, textile, incense, and gold characterized the earlier days of retail in Saudi Arabia. But because of the limited options for social activities back in the day, souks would also be frequented by men, women and children as a way to pass their time and socialize. Traditional souks such as Souk Taibah and Deerah Souk were the initial stomping grounds for local retail businesses in Riyadh. They were mostly designed as plazas, where people navigate their way in the open air. Each square would specialize in certain wares, such as gold, abayas, evening gowns, tailored thobes, curtains, and other home needs. During day time, these places were like ghost towns. But as the sun sets and the final prayer of the day ends, people begin to flock the souks to shop, bargain and have a cup of gahwa (Arabic coffee).

became beloved city landmarks, hosting the most lavish and stylish of brands. Those days are now a stark contrast to the enormity and quantity of newer malls that have been built in recent years. Malls such as Riyadh Gallery, Granada Center, Al Nakheel Mall and Riyadh Park have an average of over 70 stores, with dedicated activity centers and indoor amusement parks for children (some even have cinemas). Within the span of a decade, the capital city of Riyadh alone has around 20 malls in the Kingdom with the rest of the country holding another 30 or more in the Northern, Eastern and Western regions. That number is set to become higher as plans for bigger and newer malls are on the pipeline for companies such as Arabian Centers and Hamat Property Co.
Retail Round-Up The emergence of these bigger, modern malls have also served as a gateway for international mainstream brands to tap the Saudi market. Big retail industry names like The Gap, Adidas, Nike, Marks & Spencer, Victoria’s Secret, H&M and the like are now within reach – and their presence have heavily influenced a change in consumer behavior here: keeping them abreast with the current style trends and making customers more brand-conscious than ever. There is also no shortage of luxury brands in Saudi, especially in the city center where your purchasing power can equate to your social standing. The exclusive clientele of Van Cleef and Arpels, Tiffany’s, Stuart Weitzman and Cartier have their own ritzy nooks in the malls where products don’t require price tags, only prestige for their affluent patrons. Centria Mall, Kingdom Centre and Riyadh Park are the three major malls where upscale shoppers can feel at home.
9
But as always, there will always be a thrifty shopper and highend brands are not everyone’s cup of tea. There are many local fashion retailers with mass-produced items offered at a more practical price point such as the famous Al Haram Centers and Hazaz Shopping stores. These particular commercial centers are suitable for big households on a budget but still aim to shop for all their family members. Souk Taibah and Deerah Souk remain as local favorites where one's haggling skill is put to the test. Lest we forget those “riyalin” stores - where you can get almost any household or school item starting from 2 riyals and up. Sale Season aka Spending Season Ideally, the major sale seasons in Saudi Arabia used to happen twice: once in the middle of the year and another towards the end. However, the past couple of years have been unpredictable with more and more brands coming up with favorable deals almost every month. As of writing, the Black/White Friday sales have struck strong in the stores of Saudi Arabia, both in malls and online. Customers are most likely still reeling from the widespread discounts that were served up over the weekend. Buy One, Get One promos and sale prices of up to 90% off have been advertised all over town – and it’s not the first time that campaigns such as these have been recorded. It is these kinds of incredibly marked down prices with such a low to none tax rate that serve as an allure to shoppers here. The sale season
has been designed to be irresistible and if you don’t keep your eyes closed (along with your wallets) then the chances of being commercially convinced is not that far off. E-Commerce on the rise The majority of the target market these days (aged 25-34 years old) are predominantly tech-savvy and owns a smartphone. With that in mind, companies are beginning to catch up with the use of the internet as the new way of pushing retail in a more accessible and convenient manner. Riyadh, in particular, is developing a lot of its infrastructure at the moment and many shoppers may find the traffic too time-consuming for their benefit. Shopping sites such as Souq.com, iHerb.com, and those noted by Ayesha Marium in her article on online shopping (page 34) are just some of the websites/phone applications that are popular to Saudi shoppers at the moment. By the end of 2020, the e-commerce industry in Saudi Arabia is expected to rake in over 10.8 million USD.* With the implementation of Saudi Vision 2030, the new changes have already been evident in the shopping experience here. More and more female Saudi sales persons are now holding positions in retail stores that was once dominated by only men. In addition, as the country opens its doors to tourism, the potential to tap on the tourists’ purchasing power is a promising new sector.

ON A MISSION:
HER ROYAL HIGHNESS PRINCESS LAMIA BINT MAJED SAUD AL SAUD BY ALEXANDER WOODMAN
“The children of today will live in a very different Saudi Arabia to the one that we grew up in and we should be proud of this,” says Her Royal Highness Princess Lamia Bint Majed Saud Al Saud, the Champion of Generation Unlimited (UNICEF) and one of the most influential women in the Middle East.
H
RH Princess Lamia uses her authority and rank to serve to others, to support women to get higher education, and work, and to protect them from domestic violence. As a Secretary General and member of the Board of Trustees at Alwaleed Philanthropies, HRH Princess Lamia devoted her life and career to charity, humanitarian work, and women empowerment not only in Saudi Arabia but across the world. In a world struggling to overcome difference and discrimination, Alwaleed Philanthropies supports cross-cultural and interfaith programs that use art, history and media to bridge divides and celebrate common values of tolerance and cultural diversity of humanity. She follows the vision and mission of Alwaleed Philanthropies, which are aimed to build bridges for a better world, promoting tolerance,
acceptance, and equal opportunities for all, with no gender, race, and religion differences. With patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz al Saud and the delicate and gentle leadership of HRH Princess Lamia, Alwaleed Philanthropies invest in programs that empower women and young people to overcome economic, cultural, and societal barriers so they can contribute to all aspects of society. The concept is structured to invest in individuals from day one, to help them fulfil their potential, and to support the wider development of community and economy of the country. From 2018, HRH Princess Lamia on behalf of Alwaleed Philanthropies joined the UN Women’s flagship ini-
tiative, “Making Every Woman and Girl Count.” This project is focused in strengthening the monitoring and implementation of research and data on gender equality around the world. The next objective of the partnership with UN Women’s for HRH Princess Lamia is to share the real stories, the real change happening on the ground in the Kingdom. While working on the initial research phase of the project, the team of HRH Princess Lamia found that it was necessary to add an additional pillar to those commonly found in gender indices social pillar. This pillar analyzes women’s engagement and contributions to society and their community. As it was highlighted by HRH Lamia: “Our talent and energy are vital to the development of our society and economy.”
11
You have been assigned as a Speaker the World Tolerance Summit to be held in November in the United Arab Emirates. Can you tell us about that? I believe tolerance is about finding common ground rather than fighting over areas where we disagree. It’s about respect. It’s about trust. It’s about finding ways to make a better future rather than dwelling on the past. The World Tolerance Summit is an important and much-needed forum to discuss how we can achieve global peace and security. The theme of this year’s summit is “Tolerance in Multiculturalism: Achieving the Social, Economic and Humane Benefits of a Tolerant World.” How can people learn how to build bridges of tolerance and accept cultural diversity? Can this genuinely lead to a prosperous co-existence and sustainable world? I believe my role on the board highlights the significant role non-governmental organizations such as Alwaleed Philanthropies can play in shaping beliefs and attitudes to avoid or resolve the conflicts that can take root when social, economic and political differences exist. In a world struggling to overcome difference and discrimination, Alwaleed Philanthropies supports cross-cultural and interfaith programs that use art, history and media to bridge divides and find and celebrate our common values. Only by working together can we build bridges of tolerance and harness cultural diversity to create a richer, more fulfilling world. One of the central goals of Saudi Vision 2030 is to provide equal opportunities for men and women. What is your vision regarding gender equality?
Vision 2030 recognizes that gender equality is key to ensuring a thriving economy and a vibrant society. Gender statistics are key to developing policies. In September 2018, Alwaleed Philanthropies partnered with UN Women to deploy its ground-breaking public-private initiative called ‘Making Every Woman and Girl Count’ which aims to support faster, more efficient implementation of the UN sustainable development goals - the universal roadmap adopted by world leaders in 2015 to achieve sustainable development by 2030. Today, less than a third of the data needed for monitoring the gender-specific commitments in the SDGs is available, with six of the SDGs having no indicators that explicitly mention women and girls. The lack of good quality, readily available gender data hampers monitoring efforts and threatens the progress towards global commitments. In Saudi Arabia, our data collection program had fifty-six items which were used to evaluate the extent of Saudi women’s involvement in five ‘pillars of development’ – economy, healthcare, education, legislation and social. The results of the study were announced at a conference in Riyadh in May with the title ‘The Role of Women in Development: Towards a Vibrant Society.’ Using a gender parity indicator (GPI) for each of the five pillars of development, the results revealed a relatively high overall disparity between men and women in the kingdom. Women were virtually absent in the field of legislation and participated much less than men in the areas of economy and social. In contrast, women’s participation in education and healthcare was found to be only very slightly lower than that of men.
How does Alwaleed Philanthropies empower Saudi women? By way of example, we are helping Saudi women enter the workforce by providing vehicles for female drivers who want to work with Careem, the regional transportation network company. We also provide training in vehicle maintenance and hope to train as many as 1,000 women in these skills. What advice would you give to women who may aspire to leadership roles? One of our initiatives at Alwaleed Philanthropies, the ‘Hero Next To Hero’ campaign, was launched to change negative perceptions about women and girls and promote the idea of gender equality. I believe we need to recognize and understand the potential in everyone to achieve great things. We need to challenge stereotypes and encourage a genuine respect and desire for equality from the youngest age possible. The children of today will live in a very different Saudi Arabia to the one that we grew up in and we should be proud of this. Our country is still young. Only fifty years ago Riyadh was a small village in which women didn’t have much of an opportunity. We have come incredibly far, very fast. At the Saudi Women in Development conference, we heard from Saudi female leaders at Microsoft, the first female Saudi ambassador to the United States and female academic professors. My advice for Saudi women is to believe in yourself. Saudi women are strong. We understand what we want and how we can get there by working together. This is the foundation for leadership.

THE STORIES STAN SHARES THROUGH HIS DISHES
18
When you recall your warmest family moments, you will realize they are often stories shared at the dinner table or celebrations over a special meal. Raised in a household of many professional cooks, Chef Stanislaw Bobowski understands that every dish tells a story and evokes a warm memory. Chef Stan’s enthusiasm in growing with the company and interest to be part of the booming hotel industry in the growing market of Saudi Arabia inspired him to join as an Executive Chef at the Marriott DQ in October 2019. He is in awe of the cultural awareness amongst the Saudi people remarking that it is particularly exciting to prepare a dining experience for people who are willing to try something new and explore different cuisines. All this is helping him prepare a more lavish dining experience for the visitors of Goji Restaurant starting this fall. Chef Stan comes from a family with a long history of cooking; his mother and grandparents were chefs and as they passed on their love for food, the chef and his siblings have also been drawn towards a career in the culinary arts. His family was a strong supporter of organic farming and many of the ingredients used were grown at home. He recalls picking out his own vegetables and cooking with his family from a very young age, which made him passionate with cooking early in life. Chef Stan’s profession in the culinary arts started at the age of 19, as he enrolled to be part of a cooking fleet on a cruise ship. Despite the strong competition, he was chosen for the job. Excited to travel around the world and learn from the high stakes professional kitchen, he
left his hometown in Poland and embarked on a life changing experience. Cooking with his kitchen team for up to 3000 people from scratch three times a day created a busy kitchen, and the high volume of work allowed him to perfect the most efficient way to prepare dishes. This experience also allowed Chef Stan to strengthen his skills in leading a kitchen for over seven years and become an organized and focused leader in the process. At each port the cruise ship docked at, Chef Stan also got the incredible opportunity to experience different cities and their cuisines. He continued his culinary journey as an Executive Chef for the Marriott Group across England in Swindon, Solihull, Bristol and Birmingham. He has also worked at St Petersburg, Russia for the past two years. All this experience allowed him to the chef to truly hone his skills and expand his horizons. He said that over the past 20 years, he witnessed a lot of change in cooking. Food has become a more exciting experience, a special indulgence to share with loved ones and an opportunity to create memories over exquisite dining experiences. Chef Stan is proud to invite you to dine at the Goji Restaurant and share a wonderful meal with those you love.

rom the mighty Iguazú Falls in the subtropical north to the thunderous, crackling advance of the Glaciar Perito Moreno in the south, Argentina is home to a vast natural wonderland. Diversity is a big part of it. The country that boasts the Andes’ highest snowbound peaks is also home to rich wetlands, rust-hued desert, deep-blue lakes, lichenclad Valdivian forests and Patagonia's arid steppes. Wildlife comes in spectacular variety, from penguins and flamingos to capybaras, giant anteaters, whales, guanaco herds and more. In this vast country, stunning sights abound and big adventures await. Satisfying that craving for flame-charred steak isn’t hard to do in the land that has perfected the art of grilling. Parrillas (grill houses) are ubiquitous, offering up any cut you can imagine, alongside sausages and grilled vegetables. Thin, bubbly pizzas and homemade pastas also play central roles, thanks to Argentina's proud Italian heritage. The fun and fast-changing globalization of the country is also bringing gourmet world cuisine to both upscale restaurants and the shady cobblestone neighborhoods. Bilateral Relations The praiseworthy distinguished relations between the two friendly countries are evident in the longstanding history of trade and communication between Argentina and Saudi Arabia, there is successful continued strategic cooperation which serves the common good of both countries. Argentinian exports to Saudi Arabia was recorded to be worth USD 931.9 million during 2018, according to the United Nations COMTRADE database on international trade. Other fields of growing strategic cooperation include ICT, Agriculture and more. During a meeting on January 10, 2018, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, His Excellency Eng. Abdullah Al-Swaha and the Ambassador of the Argentine Republic to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia His Excellency Marcelo Gilardoni discussed ways to enhance bilateral collaboration in the field of communications and information technology as well as topics of common interest. The ICT stakeholders in the Kingdom are ready to open up spaces for dialogue toward further technical collaboration between them. Three agreements were signed at the last day of The Green Fodder Forum between Saudi and Argentinian companies in the field of exporting fodder to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This was organized by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, in the presence of Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Argentina Dr. Luis Miguel, Saudi Deputy Minister for Agriculture Eng. About the Ambassador
Marcelo Gilardoni Embassy of Argentina BY ALEXANDER WOODMAN What inspired you to go into diplomacy? The story is pretty much unusual and interesting. It was more like a chain. My grandmother wanted my father to be a diplomat, and I wanted to become a diplomat, starting from childhood. This was the reason why I started to study languages at the age of 9. Right now, when I am discussing this question, I think that everything started with my grandmother. You were living in the United States of America before you moved here? How was the experience? To be honest, I was living in the States for four years more than 20 years ago, and moved out in the 2000s as a diplomat. I served as a Deputy Consul in Los Angeles, and was dealing with cultural affairs. Afterwards, I moved to Vietnam, where I lived for approximately 6 years. My position was the Deputy Head of Mission. Afterwards, I continued my journey and stayed in Venezuela until 2013 and then back to Buenos Aires. Before finally moving to Saudi Arabia, I was a Deputy Head of Mission in Rome. Being an ambassador here for the first time is challenging, but I am very honored and excited about this. When were you posted to Saudi Arabia? What was your reaction when you found out that you are coming to Saudi Arabia? I clearly remember: it was at the end of October 2018. It is not a secret that I like challenges, and to be honest, this is the first time I serve in the region as well. Previously, I was in Jordan, Israel, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, both for holidays and official visits. That's why despite the fact that I have never been to Saudi Arabia, I knew the region, and was very excited to come here. What would you say are the most important duties of each Ambassador to increase bilateral relations? The most important duties for a diplomat are to get involved in local society to understand the culture, and get acquainted with local traditions. For me, Saudi Arabia feels like home,
since there are a lot of similarities between our countries. We are here to reinforce bonds and increase the contact points between us. I can say that I was proud to witness the recent visit of the Crown Prince, HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdul Aziz to Buenos Aires. What are the essential factors needed to forge closer relationships between the two countries in terms of their visions of regional and international issues? First of all, the most important factor is to strengthen the bilateral bonds through both official and non-official visits in order to reduce the physical distance between us. In my opinion, the duties that have to be highlighted are mingling and meeting with the local society/authorities, and do the follow up of the issues that we were negotiating about. When considering the formation of the Summit of the South American-Arab Countries (ASPA), what is the most significant impact of this union on the bilateral relations of participant countries? Historically, the Summit of the South American-Arab Countries (ASPA) was founded more than 10 years ago with a purpose of creating new multilateral forum for discussions between two similar regions, South America and the Middle East with North Africa. It is amazing to observe how historical and social ties unite us. As of 2016, the two-sided trade volume reached $1 billion, and Argentina has emerged as having the advantage. Can you discuss the current numbers and achievements since that time? Since my arrival in October 2018, I have been working closely on formatting the commercial relations between us. Therefore, to make this real, I am grateful to the cooperation offered to me by the Saudi Chamber of Commerce, and the interest of Argentinian businessmen to travel to Saudi Arabia. 25
Which markets, partners, and clients do you feel might best improve the trade between the business sectors of the two countries? In my opinion, we have to work on improving and augmenting the commercial relations in the field of food, promoting Argentinian beef and poultry products here. Honestly, I was touched when I saw the Argentinian brands in Saudi supermarkets. Currently, we are working on Argentina Week in Saudi, to show one cultural branch of my country. We are going to offer beef, chicken, lamb, fresh fruits and vegetables, nonalcoholic beverages, as well as seafood, both frozen and fresh. It is planned to be realized after this summer. We are looking for local partners, supermarkets, restaurants, as well as hotels. One of our goals is to show in different cities of the Kingdom special products that we have for Saudi. Depending on the budget, we might be bringing some dancers, in order to organize a tango show. Since I am also the ambassador of Argentina to Oman and Bahrain, the particular project will also include these countries. You occasionally emphasize the rapid progress of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector of the KSA. Please elaborate on the importance of building a digital infrastructure, and its impact on world competitiveness. Saudi Arabia has witnessed an impressive progress of the Information and Communications Technology, which, in my opinion, can become a “model” for others. In that sense, Argentina, since President Macri assumed in 2015, has witnessed the same development by establishing e-government. Muslims make up approximately 2% of the population in Argentina. Although they are a small part of the community, it is not strange to be a Muslim in the Argentinian culture. How can people learn the delicate interfaith language, expressed through common humanity, respect, and compassion? With no doubt I can say that Argentina has always been a country of peace and mutual respect in terms of ethnicity and religion. It is important to mention that the Arab community, both Christian and Muslim, have been working closely in all aspects of Argentinian society. In 2020, Saudi Arabia will host the 20th Summit of the G20. Please discuss the specific steps you expect to be undertaken to effectively and efficiently increase the vision and strategy of the G20. I have no doubt that the Saudi G20 Secretariat will find the right topics and visions needed to carry out a successful Summit. As far as I know, Saudi Arabia proved its effectiveness, and always being updated on G20 maters. It is highly important to remember that Argentina together with Japan and the Kingdom are now part of the “troika,” therefore, our work together will continue. Saudi Vision 2030 is an ambitious endeavor for both for Saudi government and its partners. How do you foresee the role and engagement of Argentina amidst all of this change?
Argentina is already working hand in hand with the government of Saudi Arabia in cooperating in the fields mentioned in the Saudi Vision 2030. In this sense I can remember that recently we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in tourism which is a rising topic in Saudi Arabia. It is very exciting for us, and we think we can easily become a strategic partner. Education is one thing we can work on together. Besides that, we are thinking of trade and investments. Another part of Vision 2030 is to sign an air services agreement with Argentina. We are working on having a visa contract, which will facilitate the application process and be beneficial both for Argentina and Saudi. Can you discuss the educational programs planned to be accomplish between the KSA and Argentina? I have been in Jeddah for a day a couple of months ago, and visited the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Currently, we are trying to explore possibilities of cooperation between KAUST and universities in Argentina. Besides that, we have bilateral relations with Saudis, and we are trying to find ways of collaboration in the sphere of education as a whole. We are thinking of offering courses and postgraduate classes for Saudi students in Argentina. In general, we do have some students back there in Balseiro Institute in Bariloche, studying physics, engineering, but we are trying to explore possibilities of further cooperation. According to the United Nations, Argentina and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have an adult literacy rate of 99.13% and 94.4% respectively. In your opinion, other than schools, what can improve people's literacy and intelligence? I believe that “curiosity” and “passion” are the answer. From my point of view, curiosity stands for knowing more, and the passion to research and interest yourself in any topic that can enrich your daily life. Tell us about your life in DQ. I am not going out that much. Actually, it has been a lot of work since I came here. Argentina was hosting the G20 Summit, where I was one of the representatives and presidents. We were holding it until December, when the presidency was over. Afterwards, in January, we are having the delegation’s wall settling down, which is not an easy task to deal with. Besides that, I was doing some work in the house, which also can be considered as a reason why I was not able to go out a lot. I also traveled around the country. However, life in the DQ is very nice, and every single day is full of events, either national days of other embassies or functions organized by the Saudi government.

Out of Africa, Into Arabia
The deserts of Saudi Arabia hold surprises from undulating sand dunes, magnificent sunrises and sunsets, ceaseless winds, and shades and shadows that turn objects to mirages. But this part of the Arabian desert in Riyadh region holds a piece of Africa and beyond.
There are only a few places in Riyadh that takes my breath away. But when I find one, it’s truly a unique marvel; one that I didn’t imagine to exist in the dry, arid desert of Saudi Arabia. The Nofa Resort Riyadh, A Radisson Collection Hotel took my breath away, and probably my heart too. Weeks after our weekend getaway in the place, my heart still flutters with memories of the African resort and safari in the orange dunes of Arabia.
28
Just 45 minutes from downtown Riyadh, the Nofa Resort Riyadh, A Radisson Collection Hotel is a one-of-a-kind retreat away from the daily hustle and bustle of life. Inspired by Africa, the resort boasts of secluded luxury villas tastefully-designed with decors from the world’s second largest continent. Furniture and fixtures are carefully curated to embody and show the rich culture and traditions of Africa. In this exclusive escape overlooking the famed Nofa Wildlife Park, privacy and security are of topmost importance. Each villa has its own private gardens and swimming pools. Traveling to the resort is already a delightful experience with gorgeous views of the Tuwaiq escarpment and the nearby wadi and lush farms. Forty-five minutes after and the huge gate of of the resort beckons. Once we stepped into the Nofa Resort grounds, we were welcomed into a whole new world. A world that is easy to love and very hard to let go of.
We were warmly welcomed by the staff in their stunning lobby with couches set against the walls with pictures of San people and majestic carvings of elephants. Sunshine enters the glass walls and floods the floor graced with rugs made of real animal hide. A throne made of crocodile skin awaits. It’s a surreal experience that awed us endlessly. The Nofa Resort Riyadh, A Radisson Collection Hotel has 57 bungalows and villas. Set among palm trees and bougainvillea plants, the stone bungalows and terrace villas of Nofa Resort are impressive. They’re structurally dramatic but barely visible as they blend into nature effortlessly. These sanctuaries hae thatched roofs that allow the rooms to cool and become airy all-year long. Doors are carved with animals that ply the wilderness; the lion is at the door of the Royal Villa, the only one of its kind in the resort. They open to spacious bedrooms with fabrics draped in all sides; wooden desks and chests adorning the room
and armchairs that made me want to curl up with a book I brought along for this mini vacation. Each villa is equipped with the necessities: Nespresso machines, bath and body essentials, slippers and bath robes, and free wi-fi. It was hard to choose where to relax: inside the villa with its African accents and zen vibe or outside with the garden and heated pool promising a stunning view of blue water and sky. The resort boasts of three restaurants and dedicated meeting areas and conference and banquet facilities. The bright and sunny Tswalu Restaurant is the perfect place to start
mornings. We enjoyed their buffet breakfast especially their juices and made-to-order egg dishes and waffles. Pizza and pasta are the high points of our lunch at Alfresco Italian Restaurant. Complete with the sound of the water cascading into the resort’s huge swimming pool, a meal at Alfresco is invigorating. The Butcher’s Den offers a more upscale dining experience with their fresh-off-the-grill seafood and meat. All of our food cravings were satisfied as each restaurant has its own unique offerings; their food and service were excellent. Guests are lent electric bikes to navigate the whole resort. The trails are perfect for biking and walking. The swimming
pool, the piece de resistance in the middle of the resort, is stunning! All the stress melts away with these activities. Apart from the villas and amenities inside the resort, the Nofa Resort Riyadh, A Radisson Collection Hotel offers their guests bespoke experiences that we won’t find in any other resort in Saudi Arabia. Surrounding the resort is an extraordinary ecosystem that serves as a home to a large assortment of animals including zebras, giraffes, cheetahs, antelopes, and more. The Nofa Wildlife Park promises a learning and engaging safari experience. The safari trail allows the resort’s guests to see over 700 animals, many of which are classified as endangered. And for those looking for more greens rippling in the dunes, the challenging 18-hole golf course welcomes amateur and professional players alike. These experiences contribute to making a stay in Nofa Resort an incredible time.
At the Nofa Resort Riyadh, A Radisson Collection Hotel, a “hotel stay” is not just an ordinary stay; everything has been thought of. The resort has elevated the standards of hospitality, not only in Riyadh, but also in Saudi Arabia. Africa in Arabia is waiting for you at the Nofa Resort Riyadh, A Radisson Collection Hotel.

ABAYAS WITH ALICE’S TOUCH BY YANA MURASH
The abaya is an important part of a woman’s wardrobe in Saudi Arabia. Alice Giani Margi puts her Italian tailoring spin to abayas and makes them luxurious and one-of-a-kind.
As an Italian living in Riyadh, Alice Giani Margi is inspired by real women and their real needs and dreams. She founded the eponymous Modest Fashion abaya label in Milan, the heart of the fashion world, with the goal of merging the quality of iconic Italian tailoring and the value of modesty into a unique collection of timeless garments. Alice combines traditions and heritage with a modern vision in order to create clothes that all women can wear and style. How did you become an abaya designer and how did you become a part of the Saudi fashion market? When I moved to Riyadh in 2009, I needed to wear a practical abaya that could fit my busy lifestyle. I started designing to create a collection of luxurious yet comfortable abayas that are 100% hand-made in Italy. I founded my company in Milan and my signature sport abayas soon became a success, not only in Saudi Arabia, but in the Middle East, Europe and USA as well. What are your inspirations when creating a new collection? My creative process has different phases: it usually starts from a story that inspires me and inspires a message that I want to deliver through my creations. Since my mind is like a white canvas, I like to isolate myself and I don't look at the work of other designers in order to keep my work genuine, true, original and most importantly free from influences. Do you feel that the abaya will still be on top of trends in the Middle East? Abayas are still very relevant nowadays. I believe that Modest Fashion is above trends and my goal when designing a new collection is always to create timeless garments which emphasize the beauty of the woman who wants to dress modestly. Tell us about your Sporty-Chic Abaya Collection. My sport abayas are definitely the ones that are closer to my heart and are now my signature creation. They are made with innovative Italian fabrics that are stretchy, transparent, wrinkle-free and are guaranteed to last with you for years. The use of zippers, functional hoods and pockets makes them the perfect partner for modern women on the go and the minimal Italian touch makes them suitable for all occasions and styles.
What fashion events did you participate in recently? It was an honor to be among the Modest Fashion designers selected by the Islamic Fashion Design Council this year. I also had the opportunity to showcase my "Nero Sublime" collection on the runway at Torino Fashion Week last June and the show was a great success. Where can we purchase your abayas? You can check our collections at www.alicegianimargi.com. Ordering is done online via email info@alicegianimargi.com or Instagram @alicegianimargi. We ship worldwide. We like to give consultations to our customers and follow the whole process with extra care and attention towards the client’s needs. We believe in quality, not quantity. Any fashion advice for our DQ Living readers and Riyadh fashionistas? My advice is to always stay true to yourself and your style. Find your "uniform", buy a few good quality pieces you can mix and match and wear garments that make you feel confident. It's all about the attitude.

Deerah Souk Shopping Through Time BY AYESHA MARIUM
Take a stroll through the labyrinth of this spectacular souq, soak in the atmosphere, discover the gems it holds and choose the perfect presents for the upcoming holidays and special occasions. Only here at the historical Deerah Souk.
T
he year is coming to an end and holiday season is drawing near. It’s quite an exciting time for many in the expatriate community of Saudia Arabia as they get ready to travel back to their home countries to spend the holidays with family and friends whom they haven’t seen in months, some even for years! Along with the holidays come gift shopping and giving. Picking out gifts for your loved ones can be fun, however, some find it to be a stressful task. We believe hunting for presents doesn’t have to be a challenge, but rather a joyous experience. Our favorite places to shop for gifts in Riyadh are the local ‘souqs’ or marketplace because of the traditional and modern choices in one place. Souqs have historical significance in the Middle East. They have served as meeting places for both social and financial functions for centuries. In modern times, souqs in the Arab region are still popular among locals and tourists alike mainly because some souqs have retained their traditional ambiance within its interiors and the items they sell. One such souq is the Deerah Souq or Souq Al Thumairi located in the old part of Riyadh, south to historic Masmak Fort. Amid the maze of small shops in this closed-air marketplace, you’ll find clothes both modern and traditional, local handicrafts, oud, jewellery, gold and even antique furniture.
Abayas
As soon as you step into Deerah Souq, you’ll find yourself among endless shops selling abayas. Abayas are long, loosely fitted outer garments worn by women, notably in the Middle East. It has been worn for centuries for modesty. Abaya is rooted into the culture of Saudi Arabia and women wear it proudly. They come in a range of styles, cuts,
SHOP designs and colors although black color was once generally worn. Some are simple, some are embellished and fashionable. An abaya can be a stylish gift for your loved ones as it can be worn on a chilly night out as an outer garment too.
Jalabiyas
In the Arabian culture, women have always worn Jalabiyas. It’s their preferred choice of garments at celebratory occasions and lounge wear. At Deerah Souq, you’ll find shops selling these beautiful garments in different colors, sequined and embroidered in colorful threads and patterns. They are available in a range of styles such as Moroccan, Saudi, Palestinian or Emirati. They are so beautifully arranged on the shop display that you’ll instantly be drawn to them. A jalabiya is the quintessential Arabic gift for a woman. SHOP SUGGESTION: Jallabiat Suwaiqa Commercial Center Shop No: 14/10 – Gate No: 10
Scarves
Scarves make chic accessories that can enhance any outfit or coat which makes them the perfect holiday present. Within the gold souk area you’ll find the shops retailing splendid scarves in beautiful colors and patterns. They are mostly handmade, and you can find 100% Pashmina and silk scarves here.
39
Gold Ornaments
As you walk deeper into the souq, you’ll find yourself at a stretch of shops with dazzling gold ornaments on display. The gold market is one of the more popular sections of the Deerah Souq. You’ll come across glittery gold necklaces, earrings, bracelets, bangles and other stunning jewelry displayed on shop fronts. The designs are intricate with influences from Arabic, Turkish and Indian cultures. The quality of gold in the Arab region is well known throughout the world for being one of the best. If you are looking for a special gift on the pricier end, a gold jewelry sure makes a marvellous present. SHOP SUGGESTION: Jewellery Morai Al Sayari Al Thamiri Street Gold Market Shop No: 10-11
40
Carpets
Some of the most incredible items you can find at Deerah souq are the carpets. A small alley nestled with the gold souq will lead you to the carpet shops. The walls in this area are adorned with rugs in spectacular designs. The carpets here are all handmade and sourced from various countries and places such as Kashmir, Iran, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and the Black Sea region. You’ll find some truly exceptional pieces here. SHOP SUGGESTION: Azerbaijan Carpets Al Thamiri Street Gold Market Shop No: 13-14
Fabrics
Although the Fabric Market doesn’t fall within the Deerah Souq itself, we believe it is something worth telling you about. Just a short 3-minute drive from Deerah Souq, you’ll find yourself on a strip of textile shops. There shops are piled to the ceiling with fabrics such as chiffon, lace, satin and georgettes; some are encrusted with stones and shimmering in bead work. These fabrics make an amazing holiday present as the receiver can get creative with it and turn them into a dress or gown of their choice. SHOP SUGGESTION: Alkatri of Fabrics Al Imam Faisal Bin Turki Bin Abdullah St.

EAT
A Delicious Journey of
Levantine Cuisine BY ARLEN GARGAGLIANO
The MeNa experience starts when you enter the majestic Shaza Riyadh Hotel Residences. The white lattice Andalusian-style work that extends from high-ceilinged archways, along with the gracious staff, welcome you as you enter. But that’s just the beginning: MeNa, conveniently located on the ground floor of the hotel, is designed to be transportive in sight, sound, and taste.
T
he ambience of MeNa is as charming and as hard to resist as its dishes. Shades of blue and grey, wooden lattice work, private translucent gold- gauzy-curtained rooms, and a smiling staff welcome guests to this beguiling restaurant. There’s an elegance paired with calmness in the room, reinforced by the bird songs that play in the background. Located inside the majestic Shaza Hotel in the Al Jazeera neighborhood of Riyadh, MeNa beckons to locals and expats alike; it truly is no coincidence that the name “MeNa” in Arabic means harbor—or port. The welcome ground-floor entry to the restaurant includes not only a greeting, but a side table of classic Arabic coffee, paired with delicious dates. Once you enter the dining area, you are greeted with an assortment of seating options (which you can also arrange in advance). The center area is cozy and airy, but we opted for the lounge-like and couch-containing private curtained rooms. Once comfortably seated, we were met with a beautifully-presented welcome treat of feta with sumac, served with lightly-fried flat bread sticks, both served in small cast iron
dishes on a piece of black slate. I couldn’t help but notice that each seating area had an easy-to-reach plug so that, if you’re like me and always need to, you can easily recharge your phone. But phones are not the only thing being recharged at MeNa; the dining experience is stimulating and inspiring—while relaxing. MeNa doesn’t rush you. We perused the menu, which features dishes from Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria, and couldn’t help but be dazzled by the choices of both cold and hot appetizers. “Levant cuisine is for sharing!” announced the maître d' as he smiles, while watching us pour over the large, elegantly-designed menus, patterned consistently, in white and blue motifs, with the theme of the restaurant. The list of mocktails is long and enticing—and ranges from Seeds of Ottoman, Fragrance of Shalimar, but we opted for an Arabic Zest cocktail—light, airy and refreshing with its lemon juice, ginger ale, orange blossom and fresh mint ingredients.
We then enjoyed a wonderful colorful trio of cold appetizers: Hummus Shami, beautifully presented chickpea hummus, drizzled lightly with extra-virgin olive oil, Mutabbal, smokey and eggplant rich, and Muhammara, the subtly sweet roasted bell pepper and walnut dip, to start. This beautifully presented set of dips married perfectly with our bread basket. The flavors complemented our other choices: Lebanese Makanak, slightly spiced salty sausages, sweetened with pomegranate molasses, and hearty Levant Chicken Livers, whose flavors balanced well with their own pomegranate molasses sauce. For dinner, we wanted something grilled, so we chose one of the seven dishes in that category. Aswal, flavorful and charcoal-rich marinated beef chunks served with roasted veggies and fries, is a great whole-family pleaser! Additionally –the Palestinian Chicken Mosakhan Chicken cooked with olive oil, sumac, onion on almost filo-like Arabic bread topped with pine nuts, offered a lovely balance of flavors and textures. Of course, we did save some room for a sweet finish— which was yet another tough choice. But I couldn’t help but choose one of my favorites, Um Ali, baked puff pastry with mil, coconut, raisins, and paired it with equally enchanting sweet cheese rolls Halawet Al Jobeen. This was fabulous with cool vanilla ice cream and a drop of syrup. MeNa, which seats 80 diners and includes enclaves for couples and families or individuals, as well as three private rooms for families, can also be an out-of-restaurant experience; they cater their fine dishes as well to events outside of the hotel. Whether with a family, business associate or even on your own, MeNa promises to be a restaurant that gives you a feeling of satisfaction while on staycation.

INTERVAL PLUS BY KELLY DOWNING
Interval Plus brought the CrossFit craze to Riyadh. We checked out their Takhussusi Street location to see if it lived up to the hype and, more importantly, could deliver an efficient and sustainable workout.
C
rossFit has remained a hot trend in the fitness industry for over a decade. Famous for its box style gyms and friendly competitions that pop up often on social media. While CrossFit has always piqued my interest, it seemed too intimidating to try. Maybe it is the unfamiliar equipment, or the massive muscles on the coaches, or maybe it is the fact that, if I am being honest, I have never been able to do a properly formed push-up. Yet, my interest remained, and finally, I attended my first class at Interval Plus. Interval Plus opened two years ago and has locations for men and women throughout the city. I attended the women’s location on Takhassusi Street. There is a men’s location next door. I arrived at Interval Plus with a couple expectations in mind. I heard that the environment was supportive and hoped I would find that to be true. I also hoped that, with my history of muscle overuse, there would be qualified coaches able to offer modifications. I was confident I would get an effective, high-intensity workout. I had no idea at the time that the “Partners Wednesday” class I had signed up for is one of the most intense classes they offer!
After signing in for my class at the front desk, I was shown to the locker room. Here, I stored my belongings in a keypadentry locker and toured the shower facilities. The facilities are noticeably clean and well maintained. As I made my way upstairs, I spotted a scale and measuring tape. These are used before each class as a way of tracking progress. The Interval Plus gym space is spread out over two open floors with zones for different activities. After a tour of all the facilities, I headed back to the ground floor where my “Partners” class was meeting. We did burpees and deadlifts, squats and bench jumps, overhead presses and rowing. As a beginner, I was given the option of doing modified versions of the exercises to make the workout more manageable for me. Each client in my class worked out with weights, equipment and positioning that suited their personal fitness level. Yet, we were all able to complete the workout together. My partner counted my reps for me as she cheered, “You’re almost done! You’re doing great!” With my new coach and partner by my side, I nearly completed all the reps and surprised myself with my capabilities. To me, that is the essence of my Interval Plus experience: pushing yourself to accomplish more than you knew was possible, but doing it with direction and encouragement.
The atmosphere, sense of community, and knowledgeable, passionate coaches at Interval Plus is what kept me going back long enough for my new passion in fitness to grow. - Mandi Richmond Interval Plus offers four types of CrossFit classes, all taught by CrossFit certified coaches. “Theory” is a high-intensity workout of the day. “CrossFit”, is based on nine movements including Olympic bar strength training, gymnastic skills, and pull-ups and climbing. Before a new client starts CrossFit classes, they must take a three-day introductory course called Foundation. In Foundation, they will learn the CrossFit techniques and go over their nutrition plan. In the third offered class, “Interval Fit”, cardio, weights, squats, lunges, and pushups are incorporated into a plan that targets different parts of the body each day. A monitor tracks individual heart rate and calories burned throughout the class. Finally, in “Strike”, boxing and kickboxing is performed in increments of 30 minutes skills and 30 minutes theory stations.
I joined Interval Plus because they're currently the only gym in Riyadh that I know of offering CrossFit classes. Also, it's for everyone no matter what your fitness level is. I like it because classes are fun and never the same; they motivate you by making classes fun. But, I have to be honest, it's tough! However, I will stick with it because of the health benefits. - Nafisa Sayid
Weekday classes run from 7am-8pm daily, offering clients the flexibility to work with any schedule. Classes continue through the weekend on a limited schedule. Clients range from beginners like me to advanced athletes looking to add diversity to their routine.

Describe your personality in 3-5 words/adjectives and expound. Curious, adventurous, sometimes mercurial. I was very outgoing growing up, but as I have gotten older I’ve become a bit more reserved. I am a people person and I think I make friends easily, but definitely need time to myself to recharge. What are your hobbies? Travel and golf. Both have been constants since I was a teenager, although admittedly I am much better at traveling than I am at golf. Actually, the two have much in common; you can enjoy both solo or with others; every round, just like every journey, is a new experience. Both have highs and lows; both get you out into nature; and both allow you to make new friends. How many years have you lived in Saudi Arabia? Off and on for almost nine years. I have left and returned more than once. Seems like each time, Saudi is not through with me. What brought you to Riyadh? I was living and working in Mongolia at the time when a very good friend and former Riyadh-based lawyer and mentor, Ronald Pump, asked me If I would be interested in moving to Saudi Arabia. Not one to turn down a new challenge, I traded the Mongolian steppes for the Arabian desert.
What changes have you seen/experienced in Riyadh since you first came here up to now/today? It goes without saying the social changes since 2009 have been monumental. For me, though, in my profession, the most dramatic change has been the changes to the foreign investment process. As a corporate lawyer I have helped foreign companies set up their operations here for many years. I remember when the licensing division at the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA) was really just two people. Setting up companies was hard and tedious and it took a long time. Now, SAGIA has become a much more efficient organization. Once you satisfy the document requests, getting a foreign investment license can be issued in a matter of days. That was unheard of when I first arrived. How long have you lived in the DQ? A total of about 4 years, but not all at once. When I first arrived in 2009, it was almost impossible to get an apartment in the DQ for a number of reasons, but it has always been, and still is (although changing) an outpost of tranquility from the hustle and bustle of Riyadh. What were your first impressions of the DQ? I remember distinctly coming into the DQ for the first time to an embassy event and was a bit starstruck; it was an amazing evening in which I met people from all over the world doing all kinds of interesting things here in Saudi. It kind of set the tone for my time in the DQ. What do you like most about the DQ? The DQ is a place of convergence of so many unique individuals. It is a place of gathering that has given me many happy memories. What is something you wish the DQ had, but currently doesn’t? Would be nice to have a golf course...

Any tips for your DQ neighbors? Stop at the crosswalks and watch out for pedestrians and bikers. Wear reflective clothing at night if you are out walking/jogging. It’s getting busier here in the neighborhood.
