DQGA INTRODUCES SMART PARKING The Diplomatic Quarter is a critical and vital neighborhood; it hosts more than 40,000 cars on a daily basis. In May 2019, the DQGA has established new regulations related to public transportation to accommodate the growing needs of the community. Smart Parking Project was introduced to cover the high traffic density and set up a safer, more reasonable process for security. The first phase of the Smart Parking Project, a part of the Safe and Smart City Strategical DQ project, covers 65% of the existing parking lots within DQ. It also managed a large lot near the South Gate that will accommodate 1200 cars. This location is now assigned and operated to be a meeting location for visitors. Buses will then take visitors to their destinations inside the DQ starting from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM from Sunday to Thursday. The I-Drive Service, a share service parking mobile app, has also been launched. It allows visitors to rent cars so that they can travel to any location faster and easier. In December 2019, a limo service through SAPTCO was commenced to provide luxury cars that can be requested through a call center or a Whatsapp business number.
With all these projects and initiatives, the DQGA has managed to: - Reduce traffic by 35% - Help the Diplomatic Police to arrange entrance through South Gate and make traffic more efficient and controlled - Provide diplomatic missions and governmental authorities with parking lots that lower traffic issues next to their locations - Provide DQ with a business module to profit from - Lower the unnecessary labor with unarranged illegal parking business - Provide Diplomatic Security with 100% accurate data related to number of cars, high density hours, and jammed locations - Give people with special needs flexible lots for easy and fast access. DQGA’s vision to cover the DQ with enough parking lots with the latest smart technology and more effective transportation module is happening at a fast pace. This encourages the DQ residents and visitors to have a better active lifestyle and provides a safer environment.

A New Era
for the Diplomatic Quarter: Rediscover the DQ as the epicenter of intercultural dialogue in Saudi Arabia BY MARIA COMETTI AND ALEX WOODMAN
In an exclusive interview with Dr. Fahad bin Mushayt, Chief Executive Officer of the DQ General Authority, we learn about the plans of the DQGA for the future of the DQ.
With a reputation that precedes itself, the Diplomatic Quarter in Riyadh (DQ) is home to estates of foreign leaders from over 83 diplomatic missions and a population of more than 10,000 local residents. Its vast natural venue for gardens, parks and hiking trails and numerous commercial and business properties create a unique balance between a landscape and urban-like atmosphere that makes it one of the most sought-after addresses in the city. Established in the 1980s, the DQ was spearheaded by HRH King Salman Bin Abdulaziz, previously the governor of Riyadh, with the goal of providing international embassies a secure and accessible area to conduct their activities and foster cultural diversity. It also included a five-year plan to improve its natural surroundings, particularly transforming the escarpment of the Wadi Hanifa to be integrated with the rest of the modern structures of the DQ.
He was an integral part of its corporate planning and was a key figure in the strategic investment and business development of the company. He gained his PhD in Political Economy and Public Policy from the University of Southern California, USA as well as an MSc in Economics from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Under his leadership, the DQGA has laid out a master plan to leverage the benefits of the DQ and create a ‘city that is human-centric’ with a value on its people and a focus on intercultural dialogue. In our interview with Dr. Mushayt, he highlights the present roadmap of the DQGA and its future.
More recently, the opportunity to invigorate the DQ has been placed at the forefront. Three years ago, the Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman launched the groundbreaking ambition for Saudi Arabia called “Vision 2030.” Its aim to find new avenues of investments and diversification of international ties makes the DQ an inseparable epicenter to achieve these goals. Hence, a royal decree prompted the inauguration of the Diplomatic Quarter General Authority (DQGA), which will be responsible for the management and further development of the Diplomatic Quarter in accordance with the programs aligned with Vision 2030. In January 2019, Dr. Fahad bin Mushayt was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the DQGA. Before assuming his post, Dr. Mushayt was the CEO of Bravo, a subsidiary of Saudi Telecom Co. for more than 3 years. Prior to that he was with STC for 17 years holding many senior VP roles.

DQGA hosts almost all of the significant diplomatic, cultural, and social events in the Kingdom. What are the plans that will increase and further strengthen the reputation of DQGA? During the past five years, DQGA has reached its goal of becoming a central platform for the political and diplomatic affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The vision for 2020 will be the creation of an inter-cultural platform which will be home to the fundamental pillars of global culture, all types of sporting events, and a strong and rigorous education. Each pillar adds a separate and necessary entity to the DQGA. The first pillar depicts culture. This serves as a collaboration with foreign Embassies and Consulates which are represented in the Kingdom. This pillar could actually be within the perimeters of the DQGA or beyond. The initiative will include a partnership with the governmental sector as well. This first pillar also aims to achieve intercultural dialogue. The first step towards the implementation of this particular pillar is the unique calendar created for 2020 which includes the national holidays of each Embassy. During the celebration of national holidays, additional information will be provided about different cultures and traditions. The second pillar portrays sports and includes various activities such as hiking competitions, cycling, and long-distance marathons. One of the future plans of the DQGA is the construction of a polo club, an equestrian center, golf course, and a lavish new park. All of these additions will probably encourage sporting events and unite the people who attend.
10
The third pillar represents the very important field of education. Newly constructed international schools will vary from the usual standards of the educational system. They will strive to deliver an innovative approach to the teaching of every student. In addition to the main class disciplines, students will be involved in various cultural and sports activities. The launch of this first international school is scheduled for September 2020. In addition to that, many other types of education content will be provided in most of the available schools in the DQ. Therefore, the third pillar of education will be a compilation of the first two pillars. DQGA will create an intercultural platform with no boundaries. Can you discuss some of the particular advantages projected for the residents of DQGA? One of the primary purposes of DQGA is to provide comfortable and accessible living conditions for its residents and guests. This should include reliable street lighting, personal security, and the availability of the latest technologies, such as private and protected identification cards (ID cards). These individual data cards will become a part of the DQGA loyalty program, which will guarantee unnecessary disturbances for the population. The main privileges of these newly-issued ID cards will include discounts during shopping excursions, participation in most country events without registration, entry to all recreation centers, and the ease of securing commercial agreements without unnecessary paperwork. The ID cards will be activated through a specific application, which will make the process more manageable and secure. Furthermore, a call-center and other social media platforms will be established where both the residents

and the guests of DQGA will receive any information of interest to them. Eventually, one of the most significant initiatives projected for 2020 is the DQGA residential website. It is a long-awaited addition for the citizens. These projects will create new opportunities for both entrepreneurs and their suppliers. How would you choose the best partner? DQGA has a specific investment strategy and is very meticulous when choosing partners. Their most important goal is to deliver the best quality of service physically, economically, socially, culturally, historically, and environmentally for its people. The procurement department of DQGA studies both local and international markets to find the finest suppliers in a particular field. Based on the demands of its consumers, the DQGA implements new regulations, standards, quality requirements, and tested strategies of collaboration. For example, the residential website of DQGA was created to offer the most secure, innovative, and attractive website for its residents. Therefore, DQGA has employed one of the best developers in the country. It is clear to many that the level of competence of this website will be the best in Saudi Arabia. Reflecting on the first pillar of the DQGA 2020 vision, can you discuss how you will preserve the Saudi culture while introducing all of these modern innovations?
DQ LIVING MAGAZINE JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2020
The preservation of the cultural heritage and legacy of our ancestors is not only the essential mission of DQGA but of the entire Kingdom. For that reason, our goal to convey the beauty and splendor of Saudi Arabia; we have set down a firm regulation policy for the buildings in DQGA. We do not want to be a high-tech City. We want to create an environment where there is a respect for nature, our culture, and the heritage of Saudi Arabia. There is also a strict rule at DQGA that while designing any new building, it must accurately maintain the integrity of nature. What is your vision of DQGA as you reflect on the next five years? We intend to become a role model for all of Saudi Arabia. This will begin with inner-city planning, creating a sustainable environment, stability, and service, which will include intercultural communication and tolerance. We will extend our hand to cooperate and exchange experiences with regional and global organizations to ensure achieving the objectives of the DQGA. It is clear that several plans of the DQGA are steadily in place and awaiting implementation within 2020. It is an exciting new chapter for the Diplomatic Quarter as a distinguished, diverse and developed community in Riyadh.

Tranquil Trails
and In-City Adventuring at the DQ BY JOU PABALATE
While the rest ventures into the deep deserts and outskirts, why not take a weekend adventure within the city’s confines?
When the Diplomatic Quarter was designed in the 1970s, the architects behind the project cleverly built the community to mesh with its wadi surroundings and topography. Envisioning a neighborhood where locals and expats alike can breathe in some fresh air and enjoy nature, they’ve embedded the interconnected trails (also referred to as walking paths) throughout the area. Fast forward to today, we see that vision coming true, much to the delight of active dwellers and sunset seekers who head onto the trails for leisurely walks, hikes, runs, cycling, or simply basking at its horizon views. The dirt paths with their occasional rocky terrain and boulders make up a 15-kilometer trail altogether, linked through public parks scattered around its perimeter. The outer, longest path that takes you all around from Roundabout 1 to the south gate is perfect for cyclists and seasoned runners who would like a challenging ride/route with uphill climbs and slopes to boot. But worry not, the trails are designed in a way that can accommodate individuals of all fitness levels. For those wanting to just stroll and be closer to nature, you can take the shorter route starting at Roundabout 8 and exit at Tuwaiq Palace—this offers breathtaking views of the sunrise and sunset, Wadi Hanifa’s Bridge, and a variety of faunas and birds to marvel at, for an hour or less. Families often gather at the Al Yamama Gardens, one of the biggest out of the 17 parks in the DQ and can be found along Heraa St. And it has the added perk of just being a stone throw away from one of the trail access

points that overlooks a cliff. A good picnic spot, it lets you get a bit of both the greens and dirt without committing to a hike. Likewise, should you prefer some quietude, you can make your way to Roundabout 6, near the south gate. This hike

TRAILING TIPS: 1. Are you a dog lover? Shout out to the wonderful DQ Trail Dog Group that meets up almost every Friday during the cool months. Non-pup owners are welcome as well. 2. Restrooms are available in the pit stops and parks. 3. “SPIN” bike rental is now open near the Arabsat Entrance, directly across Pancake House, should you wish to ride rather than stride. 4. Be a responsible hiker--- dispose of your trash in the bins and for dog walkers, pick up your pet’s business; runners and fellow trailers will thank you for it. 5. Say hello! There’s a friendly culture on the trail, go ahead, greet each other. path has higher elevations and offers a majestic view of the Ritz Carlton-Riyadh. There are smaller parks in this area as well. When the weather gets warmer, hikers often take the paths with more shade, which in my experience, would be the sunken trails near Tuwaiq palace. With date palms lining the paths, a manmade creek, and tall grass growing on large patches, this area provides the most comfortable hideaway for a workout during spring. The shorter trails will take about 45 minutes of walking, the entire 20 kilometers about 2-3 hours with ins and outs on the pavements. You can exit the trails anytime through the parks. EDGE OF THE WORLD BY RIYADH HIKING
Ready for the most popular hiking trail in Riyadh? This breathtaking cliff will not let you down. One of the most popular desert treks from Riyadh is to the Edge of the World along the Tuwaiq Escarpment. The 300-meter high cliffs surrounding central flat plains create a scenic view of the glorious desert horizon, allowing visitors to truly feel like they are standing at the edge of the world. An invigorating physical challenge for most, Edge of the World also played a significant historic role as an important checkpoint for trade routes across the Arabian peninsula. Beyond that, as most of the unexplored desert was a sea bed, visitors will find fossilized coral along many of the tracks at this site. Edge of the World also gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy the lush Sha’ib Kharmah, a large valley that becomes green during after rainfall, hosts thousands of trees that offer shade to visitors all year long, making it a perfect place for a picnic. Follow that with a sunset from the cliff top for an unforgettable experience. DISTANCE: 4 KM DURATION: 2 hours for beginners PACKAGE: SAR 250 Saturday and SAR 300 Friday ABOUT RIYADH HIKING The tour operation founder, Faisal, took his first hiking tour in Riyadh in 2016. For this trip, he chose the Tuwaiq mountains because of his passion for hiking to summits. This awakened an interest that he shared with friends and soon Faisal was arranging regular trips to the desert by himself or with friends. His personal instagram account started gain-

ing a lot of traction, with Riyadh residents asking him a lot of questions about the places they visit and many residents were keen on going along with him. The enthusiasm of the locals and expats in the city moved Faisal, and his love for socializing with and meeting new people encouraged him to start including more and more people on his trips. Initially they were casual friendly trips where they split the cost at the end of the journey, however with growing demands Faisal applied for the tour guide license and established the touring company Riyadh Hiking in 2018. With growing demands, Faisal has expanded the tours to include more activities. However, despite the organized trips, the feeling of going on an exciting adventure with friends is very important to Riyadh Hiking and loyal clients enjoy this most about the company. With the mission of helping people from all over the world explore this beautiful and unique country and its rich heritage, Riyadh Hiking is here to arrange public and private trips as requested. More information on planned trips can be found in the weekly announcements on the organization’s Instagram account. Those who enjoy the beach and engaging in water activities such as scuba diving will be able to appreciate a weekend trip to Jeddah, Omluj and Neom. Finally, desert-lovers can enjoy a variety of sand activities in Riyadh, AlUla, Tabuk or the largest desert in the world, the Empty Quarters. of State for Foreign Affairs, Adel Al-Jubeir, and a generous donation of $1 million to the victims’ families by Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.” Trade relations between the two nations have always been significant and well maintained. In 2017, Saudi Arabia was New Zealand’s 20th-largest market with approximately NZ$507 million exported to Saudi Arabia, according to the United Nations COMTRADE database on international trade. The Kingdom is reportedly the biggest importer of New Zealand products in the Middle East. New Zealand exports dairy products, meats and wood products to Saudi Arabia in exchange for oil products. New Zealand companies have also participated in providing services in areas as diverse as retail interior design, government and policy consulting, food safety and architecture. In August 2018, a Saudi and New Zealand joint ministerial group ended a two-day series of meetings in Auckland with an agreement to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. The committee’s minutes were signed by Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli, and New Zealand Minister of Trade and Export Growth David Parker. Al-Fadhli said: “Trade between the two countries has witnessed remarkable development in past years, rising from SR675 million ($16 million) to about SR3 billion in 2016.”

In March 2017, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir and his New Zealand counterpart Murray McCully signed a memorandum of understanding in Riyadh for the two countries to exchange political consultations. The ministers also discussed bilateral relations, and regional and international developments. The meeting was attended by ministry officials, Saudi Ambassador to Australia and New Zealand and New Zealand’s Ambassador to the Kingdom. In May 2010, Saudi Arabia and New Zealand signed an agreement to exchange expertise in science and technology. There are thousands of Saudi students in New Zealand, and there is cooperation between Saudi and New Zealand universities regarding geological studies. This shows the large variety of fields in which both countries have cooperated and are continuing to cooperate in towards this growing bilateral relation.

About the Ambassador
James Munro
Embassy of New Zealand BY ALEXANDER WOODMAN
Your assignment as the Ambassador to KSA has coincided with the launch of Vision 2030. Taking into consideration the changes made in the Kingdom, what additional improvements would you recommend to the frameworks of Vision 2030? Saudi Arabia has changed in many ways since 2011 when I first lived in the Kingdom. The ambition of Vision 2030 is incredible, and it has been an astonishing journey to witness in recent years. Moreover, it is exceptional to see how the Saudi community has responded to this visionary ambition. It’s a very exciting time to be in the Kingdom. New Zealand had gone through similar reforms in the past, particularly in the 1980’s. During that time, the government of New Zealand changed from being a primary producer to a tertiary mixed economy. Our experiences with our own economic reforms means we are well-placed to share our experience and lessons with the Kingdom. New Zealand is excited about the opportunities that will be provided by Vision 2030 not only in Saudi Arabia but in the entire region. The Vision 2030 will see the most significant changes in economic life of the Kingdom since the discovery of oil. The New Zealand government is engaged in the Vision and is excited to participate in, and is supportive these changes. What is the possibility of resuming free trade negotiations between the GCC and New Zealand? New Zealand has enjoyed its collaboration with the GCC during the past years. In 2009 the government of New Zealand and the GCC agreed to a free trade agreement text, although it has been ‘on hold’ for the past ten years. Each member-State of the Gulf Cooperation Council is exceptionally complementary to New Zealand in terms of trade and collaboration. New Zealand has had significant investments from the GCC member-States. Similarly, there are also investments from New Zealand in the GCC. GCC countries are respected and reliable international partners for New Zealand and an area that I expect will only increase in importance in coming years. “Respect for human rights is crucial to help young people achieve their potential.” Please, elaborate on your participation in the “Youth and Human Rights” seminar organized by the Saudi Human Rights Commission. New Zealand values human rights immeasurably since it is a part of the country’s national identity. It is essential to the citizens of New Zealand that our government promotes human rights. It is great to see the Saudi Human Rights Commission leading public discussion on human rights. DQ LIVING MAGAZINE JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2020
A key message I took away from this seminar is that respect for human rights is essential to support society in achieving its full potential. This includes building a robust and diverse economic life. Respect for human rights should not be seen as a threat, but instead as an opportunity to create the conditions for economies and societies to flourish. Are there trade offs? Yes, there is always going to be. However, the impact is great and the effort is worthwhile. My experience has been that when grappling with human rights, often it is the fear of what might happen that holds people back. I applaud the work of the Commission in helping people to not shy away from human rights or see them as a threat, but rather to embrace them as an opportunity. What do you like most about the DQ? The Diplomatic Quarter is superbly designed and is a wonderful place to live. I love the tracks and Wadi trails and can often be found there running or walking with my family. Recently we have really enjoyed spending time at the weekend Farmer’s Market with family and friends. New Zealand has had a long tradition of being custodian to our land and looking after our environment. The DQ is a beautiful and striking place to visit, and I continue to hope that our residents will try to take better care of it. The beauty of the DQ is natural and located away from the city. Residents must work together to protect the beauty and elegance of it. I often get funny looks coming back from runs carrying bags of rubbish that I have picked up on the trail. People love the DQ because it’s a break from the city and is a clean and green oasis, but we all have to work to keep it that way. Showing respect for the earth and others may be as simply as walking that extra 20 meters to put your trash in the bin. What kind of food or drink would you recommend to the residents of the DQ this month? One of my most recent discoveries in DQ was the 12 Cups Café. I enjoy this particular place because they make the closest I have experienced to the New Zealand flat white coffee in Riyadh. This has not been lost on my staff. I actually lose many staff each day due to their need for a coffee fix. Still, at least I know where they are likely to be.

RIYADH SEASON FUN-FILLED & FULFILLED BY ROSITSA DOROVSKA AND REINA TEJANO-BERIÑA
Riyadh will never be the same again. Who would have imagined that a plethora of activities, exhibitions, concerts, and performances rigged almost every corner of the city as everyone experienced the first ever Riyadh Season? As its motto said: “Imagine.”
Since it kicked off back in October 2019, the calendar of Riyadh Season has been eventful and fruitful. According to the General Entertainment Authority, the number of visitors in Riyadh surpassed the five-million mark, which also included more than 100,000 tourists. This was highly attributed to the announcement of Saudi Arabia that it would start issuing tourist visas to international visitors that same month.

The fountain show at the Boulevard, one of the zones of Riyadh Season.
As proof, my own mother and sister from Bulgaria were now able to visit me personally and together, we witnessed Riyadh Season in full swing. Thanks to this new visa opportunity, other nationalities from all over the world can now also see what it’s like in Saudi Arabia. Though the biggest reward is for the Saudi people - most especially the younger generation. Not only did they have the chance to finally experience this fun and freedom in their home country, but they were also exposed to job opportunities and newfound skills. Riyadh Season provided over 45,000 jobs locally, both permanent and part-time, for the said event. The economic impact of these events are promising, with the Saudi Payments Network reporting that over SAR 156 million-worth of transactions were recorded. All demographics were considered in most of the events, allowing for affordable access and enjoyment. There were some events/activities that required pricey tickets, but it seemed that the eagerness to attend them weighed more for others – which is good for business.
HIGHLIGHTS EXPLORING SAUDI HERITAGE
The Nabd Al Riyadh was the cultural centerpiece of Riyadh Season, combining an authentic Saudi heritage site – Al Masmak Fort - with high-tech augmented reality visuals. The surroundings were amassed with booths about local and traditional art, products and food. At the central hall, performances were made from international orchestras to Arabic poetry recitals and the folkloric Ardah dance.
NIGHTS AT THE MUSEUM
Al Muraba was transformed into a mysterious night garden with glowing décor and classical music playing in the background. The venue was located between the National Museum and the King’s Palace and it served visitors seeking for an elite and extravagant dining experience from international, pop-up restaurants. While these called for exclusive bookings, the National Museum offered some “soul

food” for free. They hosted the contemporary art exhibition, “Bienalsur: Recovering Stories, Recovering Fantasies” which featured local and global artists.
GASTRONOMIC JOURNEYS
One of the best connections is always made through food. Riyadh Season was not short on bringing in hundreds of international kitchens, including chefs, to showcase their culinary work. The Taste of The World food festival brought in 14 world-class restaurants with a combined 13 Michelin stars to their name. Aside from this, the world’s most expensive restaurant, “Sublimotion” was also present in Riyadh offering its unique and science-inspired gastronomical show. Dinner in the Sky was also one of the exhilarating dining experiences from Riyadh’s Winter Wonderland with diners enjoying their meals at over 50 meters up high.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
Concerts and musicals were considered as one of the main attractions of Riyadh Season with new performances almost every week. It was kicked off with a bang by the arrival of K-Pop and world-renowned superstars, BTS as they performed at King Fahad Stadium in early October. International singers such as Amr Diab, Jason Derulo, and French Montana followed suit at the Mohammad Abdo stage in the Boulevard Zone. The massive MDL Beast Festival, which featured over 100 international DJs and Arab singers boasted of more than 130,000 visitors, breaking global festival numbers. Meanwhile, Princess Noura University halls were home to classic Broadway musicals with the showing of The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.
ENJOYING NATURE
The lush greenery and vast sand dunes of Nofa Safari is inspired by the wildlife of Africa. It was a vibrant and colorful scene with various activities for families and children, which included boat riding, a safari tour to visit the animals and entertaining performances of African dances. The Riyadh Sahara was also held in the outskirts of the capital, which was full of desert winter activities such as buggy rides, archery and a zip line adventure.
WONDERFUL WONDERLAND
Undoubtedly the heart of Riyadh Season, Winter Wonderland was a smash hit among the young and old. The theme park was twice the size of its original form from Hyde Park in London with numerous arcade games, thrilling rides, horror houses, and the largest ice skating rink in the Middle East. The crowds were always bustling with families and youngsters, most especially on weekends as it was melting pot of fun and festivities. It has been such a success that it has been extended to remain open until March 20th.
The Ferris Wheel is a good view point for the Winter Wonderland grounds and Riyadh City.

MDL BEAST:
Soundstorm in Riyadh BY IRINA PEREDERKO
Three days of music, arts and culture in an electronic festival that brought together the world’s best DJs and performers in a place one thought will never make it happen. MDL Beast has come to the Middle East! And it broke records in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Lately, Saudi Arabia is making waves by the changes happening in the Kingdom in line with its Vision 2030. They have opened a lot of doors to welcome, not only foreigners, but also locals to get to know more about the Kingdom through various events and activities. One of which is the Riyadh Season that saw the opening of 12 different zones catering to various tastes and interests. Concerts have been one of the highlights of the season and one of them, the biggest of them all, is the MDL Beast.

The MDL Beast Festival was an exceptional event which put Saudi Arabia in the spotlight. The historical event brought international superstars, artists, performers, models and actors in the Kingdom, showing them the Saudi’s hospitality and generosity. The music festival featured five stages: the Big Beast, awarded the Guinness World of Record’s tallest temporary stage, had a capacity of 45,000 and hosted the festival’s headliners; the Saudi Beast had a 2,000 capacity and saw the best local and regional Saudi

talents; the Underground Beast 1 and 2 featured the best international and local acts playing a combination of house and techno sets, and the Down Beast has a 5,000 capacity that featured artists and their melodical and tribal sets. The festival attracted half a million attendees in its 3-night run from December 19-21, 2019. It featured crowd favorites like David Guetta, Steve Aoki, J Balvin, Tiesto, and more, as well as local stars Dish Dash and DJ Cosmicat. David Guetta, who played at the Big Beast, said “it really means the world to me to be here in Saudi Arabia; it feels like writing history”. The performers’ passion was appreciated by the crowd that exceeded the numbers of world-known music festivals like Belgium’s Tomorrowland and California’s Coachella. Apart from the music field, MDL Beast also had five districts including the Art Beast with multiple impressive performances; MDL Town which offered food and drinks;

and Retail Therapy that hosted unique stores and popular establishments. The festival offered plenty of shows that saw fire performers, acrobats and aerialists skillfully performing for the crowd. The MDL Beast XP Recording Studio lets visitors experience music technologies and express their creativity. Ticket prices vary: from SR 150 up to a whopping SR 11,400 for 1-day to 3-day passes. Lounges for the Very Important Beast (VIBs) were also a sight to see. The exclusive Beast Box lounge had the best view in a large private terrace with dedicated services including private butler, special menus, and a team of waiters. Having a coveted VIP ticket gave me the chance to witness MDL Beast on my own; I was impressed with its scale and the multitude of entertainment and fun activities open to everyone. The experience is boundless! It was truly a feast for the senses.

COYA
in Riyadh:
A Glimpse into the Peruvian Palate BY JAMILA MAE FERNANDEZ
For food aficionados looking for a new and unique dining experience, COYA Restaurant should be in your bucketlist.
Let your tastebuds travel to Peru as COYA Restaurant is now in Riyadh. The pop-up restaurant is situated at the Oud Square, brimming with the Incan-inspired interiors that are both earthy and elegant. Their namesake depicts hospitality and service, with the Mayan moon goddess as its symbol – an icon known to take care of the people around her. We were eager to be surprised so we let our host choose the dishes that they would like us to try. Soon enough a lava stone bowl with avocados, tomatoes and onions was set in front of us and there he made a fresh serving of guacamole followed by crispy tortilla chips. A classic appetizer of the Latin Americas. Sourcing from Peru’s natural resources, corn and potatoes are abundant in their cuisine and COYA made sure to highlight them in their menu. Hence the Trio de Maiz - a serving of corn cooked in three different ways: grilled, steamed and candied. Each method gave the corn a varied flavor, from sweet and savory and smoky. Peruvian food has also been influenced by Spanish, African and Japanese cooking and this was evident in the Ceviches (cured fish) and the Atun Chifa (yellow fin tuna). Both were doused in vinegar and reminded us a little bit of sashimi. The Langostinos Tigre Anticuchos feature two large grilled prawns, dipped with flour and served on a stick – its flavor was similar to a tempura, albeit prepared in a totally different way.

Desserts were encouraged in the form of their signature Churros, a crunchy fried dough sprinkled with sugar and

For your next holiday, use our list below to pack your must-have health essentials for a safe trip. Health scares during vacations are a universal nightmare. Even though you can not predict or stop them, staying prepared to manage them can reduce a significant amount of stress while on the road.
RESEARCH
Read up on the countries vaccination and anti-malarial therapy requirements based on the local prevalence of diseases to avoid infections. The WHO has a country list for these. CDC Warning Levels are also helpful before planning trips. Level 3 is assigned to places that should be avoided for nonessential travel such as China for the new Coronavirus outbreak, whereas level 2 alerts are set for regions where enhanced precautions should be practised such as getting rubella titres done before visiting Japan due to their reported outbreak in early January and lastly, level 1 alerts are for practising precautions in general such as for chikungunya in Ethiopia.
DQ LIVING MAGAZINE JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2020
HEALTH REST
Traveling is harsh on your body so make sure you get plenty of rest. How much is enough? Listen to your body. At the end of each day, allow your body to rest up before the next one. Be active and roam the streets, but don’t overdo it. Take plenty of breaks in between.
STRETCH
Dedicate at least 5-10 minutes every morning to stretch before you start your day of adventure. Stretch your arms, legs, neck, shoulders, and back – you’ll feel so refreshed and be ready for a fun-filled day.
PACK FIRST AID
Basic First Aid items can be bought separately or by using a commercially available kit. It should contain everything from gloves, different sized bandages and sterile gauze to antifungal/antibacterial spray for cuts and anti-itch cream for insect bites and stings. Also add-in instant cold packs for sprains and aloe gel for sunburns. Be sure to carry sharp items like small scissors and tweezers in your checked-in luggage to avoid airport hassles.
KEEP YOUR HANDS CLEAN
Always carry antibacterial hand wipes or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing ≥60% alcohol to keep your hands clean.
PROTECT YOUR SKIN
Insect repellents for skin and clothing, sunscreen with ≥15 SPF with UVA and UVB protection and water purification tablets are important if you’re planning any camping trips. Put on sunscreen every time you go out.
CARRY YOUR MEDICINES
Carry copies of all prescriptions for medications, documentation of pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or allergies and a list of local hospitals or clinics including emergency services in your destination. Make sure to carry medications in its original packaging with prescriptions in case customs officials need to check it. Travel health insurance is always a good idea, most health insurances here can add a certain package to your plan for complete coverage at your travel destination.
STOCK UP
With regards to medication, make sure to pack enough of any prescription meds to last through any potential holiday extensions. Also carry paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain relief, anti-nausea medications for motion sickness, antihistamines for allergies and oral saline sachets and Imodium (loperamide) for immediate relief of diarrhea until you can get tested for any required antibiotics or have the availability of clean water.
TRAVEL INSURANCE
Don’t forget to get travel insurance before your trip. This list can be customized depending on your travel needs (a tropical jungle trek will require different planning than a city break in Europe). For the majority of travelers, however, the items and kit listed above will cover the absolute majority of basic needs.

Have a look on Google Maps beforehand to see what’s around you or ask the locals where the secret gems are then decide to jog or walk there and take a look. Research local gyms and fitness studios. Before you go, research local fitness studios and gyms in the area where you will be staying. Maybe there’s some fitness festivals or events happening too while you’ll be there. Social media and hashtags are a great way to target a particular place. If you have a travel agent they could help you with this too. In the spirit of traveling and exploration, try something new: a new class or style of training you’re curious about. While travelling, you may need to bring some awareness to what you eat to stay on track with your goals, so have in mind how you balance your meals for the day. For example, if you have a heavy lunch then have a lighter dinner. Or if you have an indulgent day then let the following day be lighter. Most importantly though, don’t obssess and let this consume you. Holidays and traveling are about rest too so make sure you allow space and time for this. A Journey to
“The Land of Adat” BY DQ LIVING STAFF
The journey of 150,000 kilometers within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, over the span of two years in search of precious values and lost traditions has ended, but the journey of the book “The Land of Adat” is just beginning. If past explorers ventured into the forbidden deserts of Arabia to discover the Badu and their ways of life, author Alexander Woodman rose to the occasion too, by embarking on a whirlwind discovery of the entire Kingdom in the twenty-first century.
of communication with the locals. What was their attitude towards foreigners who come from a completely different background, trying to document the essence of their livelihood? Based on my personal experience at the beginning of my journey, I was not able to experience the close fellowship of the Saudis. Truly, I found this very natural. However, once the relationship was developed, their trust went beyond my expectations. Therefore, the due respect has to be extended to the Saudis, and one ought not to be judgmental.
A dream comes to fruition through the book entitled “The Land of Adat.” What the human eyes see and perceive is the most incredible. Alexander Woodman, an honor graduate of UCLA and USC, helps the reader to journey with him and to become a partner in witnessing the undying traditions and the living history of the nomads who live closer to God in their own ways.
It is undeniable that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia values its historical legacy as much as it fosters innovation and improvement. “The Land of Adat” takes the reader into a journey through old castles, monarchial tombs, and antique craftsmanship to modern cities with contemporary architecture. How synergetic was the experience of traveling through Saudi Arabia? How does the Kingdom manage to combine the old and the new? Beauty cannot be complete without the awareness of the old and the understanding of history. The new has to reflect the elements of the old. If we are successful in doing so, then the old and the new will be merged harmoniously. When I visited almost all uncharted territories of the Kingdom, only then I saw the complete and beautiful mosaic.
It is worthwhile reading the book “The Land of Adat,” which inspires and enriches the human soul to see the self in the life of people born in the desert. The book becomes more precious through the foreword and introduction written by His Royal Highness Prince Turki Al Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and the world-renowned political scientist, formal UCLA professor and senior fellow at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies Dr. Joseph Kechichian. Their words depict the core depth of the author’s insights. Truly, the author conveys a message of peace to all, to be able to see the beauty of the entirety of the world. In order to get such meticulously detailed descriptions of Saudi culture, tradition, and lifestyle, there must have been a degree
46
Within the book, there is a very conscious level of integration of the reader into Arab life through the usage of Arabic words, the Hijri calendar, the recipes of traditional food. What is the intended effect that this stylistic choice will or should have on the reader? Is it aimed towards familiarizing foreigners with the culture, or appealing to those whose culture is the subject of discussion? Language is a history itself. In any given nation’s life, language, culture, even words journey with the people. As we

look into the history of the people, the same words and language change their texture and understanding. Thus, we need to see the language, culture, and tradition in the context of history. What was your “Lighthouse” while traveling through “The Land of Adat” – Saudi Arabia? My hidden inner instinct drowned me into the desert. I was in search of the genuine people with pure heart and soul. This thought and feeling never abandoned me, and turned to be the “Lighthouse” of my journey. The more I penetrated the depth of daily life of the Kingdom, the more layers of thoughts and feelings developed in me. I felt the infusion of eternity in my spirituality. The more I walked into the desert, the deeper I understood the significance of the journey, which I had taken. For many, the “Lighthouse” becomes the guiding light of their lives. In my case, this journey helped me to understand the “Lighthouse” was within me, and the light was radiating from my heart. These are feelings, which cannot be described and translated into words. When discussing the philosophy of givers and takers. What did you give to “The Land of Adat,” and what did “The Land of Adat” give to you? “The Land of Adat” empowered me to see the beauty in each person. What I gave to the people of the land cannot be put in-words. The reward of that, I saw in the eyes of those people. They spoke to me through their eyes, with gratitude and love. While in “The Land of Adat,” I was in a dialogue with eternity. There, I met the untouchable, and, yet the most precious appearance of humanity. Then, I fell in love with the people. This was the moment when “The Land of Adat” was enlightening my soul.
Please, discuss the first day of the years-long journey and the first step. As I took my first step to journey in Saudi Arabia, I immediately felt echoes of life brightening my spirituality. I understood that I was moving forward toward the voices of the souls of desert. But then, I immediately felt that this journey had started in my life long before, and what I realized, was that the journey had re-started after a long breakaway. You have met hundreds of Saudis, entered a number of Bedouin tents, risked, and enjoyed at the same time. How did you learn to enjoy the risk? During my journey, desert, and Bedouins have become a reality. With my journey, risk ended, and the search for purity deepened in my heart. Words cannot possibly express justly the extent of appreciation and gratitude flowing into my blood. I would wish that all people have similar journeys in their lives. Thus, the people of the world will become the architects of peace. And my vision for peace is an undying gift that I will embrace forever. What about the last shoot you made for the book and the feelings? My journey does not have the last shoot. The journey continues as the Kingdom unfolds. PHOTO CREDIT: instagram.com/thelandofadat

“A Life at the Heart of the Twentieth Century” Exhibition Celebrated the Centenary of King Faisal’s Historic Journey to Europe BY ALEXANDER WOODMAN
“King Faisal was not just a great King in Saudi history, but he became one of the greatest kings and leaders of the world. Remarkably, we repeat his history nowadays, through the transformations, that once were initiated by King Faisal. He led the country despite international pressure, changing times, and regional instability,” said Saudi Ambassador to the United Kingdom, HRH Prince Khaled bin Bandar bin Sultan Al Saud on the occasion of the exhibition “A Life at the Heart of the Twentieth Century”. The exhibition celebrating the centenary of the life-changing five-month visit of King Faisal Abdul Aziz Al Saud to Britain, Ireland, and France in 1919 was opened on December 20, 2019 in the Nash Room at 116 Pall Mall, London. This historical journey is credited with the start of cordial relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom.

Then Prince Faisal, who was only 13 years old, became the first member of the Saudi Royal family to visit England. Later, this trip was considered as one of the most controversial political visits. However, meetings with the world’s influential nations became for young Prince Faisal the first experience on international affairs. Forty-five years passed since this visit before he became the King of Saudi Arabia and one of the most eminent world leaders of the twentieth century. The exhibition “A Life at the Heart of the Twentieth Century” presented an overview of King Faisal’s visit, with a demonstration of his journey, the places he has visited, and the leaders he has met along the way. The exhibition lasted for three weeks and displayed many of his personal amenities, manuscripts, telegrams, letters, paintings, maps, photographs, and articles. The visitors had an opportunity to observe the press coverage that documented his signifi-

cant visit to Great Britain. The beginning of this exceptional journey as a future king started with an invitation from King George V to visit London. “A Life at the Heart of the Twentieth Century” consisted of seven sections, beginning with “Najd,” the story of the early life of Faisal. “India” documented the first overseas visit of the young Prince and his first meeting with those in the outside world. On his way to India, the young Prince stopped at Muscat (Oman) and was hosted by Sultan Taimur bin Faisal. Later in his life, King Faisal visited India several times. His interest in South Asia and its people grew over the years. And even after Partition, King Faisal maintained strong and deep ties both with India and Pakistan. Remarkably, the Pakistani city of Lyallapur was renamed Faisalabad. On the other hand, King Faisal enjoyed warm friendship with the Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru, and supported India to participate in the Islamic Summit Conference. “London” became the first city visited on the groundbreaking trip in 1919. The section on “England, Wales and Ireland” payed tribute to the cities of Britain he visited on his way. “On the battlefields,” focused a spotlight on King Faisal’s visit to the killing fields of Europe, one year after the end of World War I. The “Paris” exhibit commemorated his visit to the French capital and how he met the allies at the Peace Conference in Paris; this section is dedicated to the First World War. “Heritage” concentrated on the discovery of the constructive and prolific outcomes and legacy of his historic trip. Reflecting on the message and symbolism of “A Life at the Heart of the Twentieth Century” exhibition and centenary journey, His Royal Highness Prince Turki bin Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Chairman of King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies said, “This exhibition shows the start of the career of young Prince Faisal as representative of his father King Abdulaziz throughout his life. Since the first overseas trip of Faisal had been started in England 100 years ago, the place to launch these series of exhibitions was obviously London.” Further, HRH Prince Turki shared his feelings as a citizen of Saudi Arabia and, as a son of a great leader: “This is very emotional to be both an observer and son of King Faisal. I look back to the origins, and how he paved his path as a king and as a leader. This exhibition brings me back to those days when he enthusiastically and passionately led and developed all segments and resources of the country to make Saudi Arabia a prosperous realm for coming generations.” During his last state visit to the United Kingdom in 1967, King Faisal was honored by a twenty-one-gun salute and with a Trooping of the Color from the British Army’s Household Cavalry - a significant state honor that is rarely performed to visitors. Queen Elizabeth II met him as a sign of appreciation for his unique dignity and devotion to cordial ties with the United Kingdom.

His Excellency, Ambassador Khaled bin Bandar, encouraged the young population around the world to visit and witness the achievements of Saudi Arabia. “They will gain profound knowledge about this exceptional personality and his character. He was one who created international diplomacy for Saudi Arabia.” When asked about the traditional values of two Monarchies in the twenty-first century, the Ambassador stated the words of HRH Charles, Prince of Wales: “The mistake people make with tradition, they think that tradition means old. Whereas, tradition means taking what was old and applying something new that will work for you and will coincide with time.” “A life at the Heart of the Twentieth Century” exhibition has been organized in collaboration with the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, King Faisal Foundation, and the Kingdom’s Embassy in the United Kingdom. This exhibition will become one of the series of expositions in Europe to present and introduce King Faisal, his admired character, vision, undying will, and greater contribution to the world. In 2020, “A Life at the Heart of the Twentieth Century” exhibition will be launched in Paris simultaneously with the Peace Conference.

A LIFE AT THE HEART OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
The hundredth anniversary of the life-changing journey of Prince Faisal bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud to Europe in 1919.
The exhibition consisted of seven sections: “Najd,” “India,” “London,” “England, Wales and Ireland,” “On the battlefields,” “Paris,” “Heritage.”
In 1919, the British government invited Abdul Aziz Al Saud to send a mission to London. He chose his thirteen-year-old son Faisal to represent his vision for Saudi Arabia to the governments of Europe. This thirteen-year-old boy traveled more than 10,000 kilometers to meet King George V – at that moment probably the most powerful leader in the world.
The intelligence, dignity, and keenness of Faisal as a child during this tour prepared the ground for future reciprocal visits. During this journey Prince Faisal with his Kuwaiti counterpart visited H.M.T. Kigoma, a German ship, captured by Britain during the World War I.
The young Prince was accompanied by Captain John Philby. Captain Philby and Faisal visited the Eastbourne school. The school Faisal saw was utterly unlike that existed in Najd. As a King, Faisal reformed and modernized education in Saudi Arabia.
As a King, inspired by the scale of industry he witnessed in Britain and encouraged by his wife Effat, Faisal reformed the educational system, by opening it up to girls and young women for the first time. King Faisal was committed to introducing new technology to Saudi Arabia, including cutting-edge communication.
India became the first foreign journey for the young Prince. On their journey to India, Faisal’s party stopped at Muscat where Sultan Taimur bin Faisal received them as guests of honor.
This historical journey to Great Britain became the start of mutual respect between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom.
Faisal visited India several times later as Crown Prince and King. His interest in South Asia and the people who lived there, particularly the large Muslim population, never waned. He ensured that India was invited to attend the first Islamic Summit in Rabat, in 1969. After Partition, King Faisal maintained and developed close relations with both India and Pakistan.
Forty-five years passed since this life-changing journey to Europe before Faisal became the King of Saudi Arabia and one of the most eminent leaders of the twentieth century.

Learning and Development Manager Over 10,000 residents call the DQ home. Meet Your Neighbor profiles interesting people in our international DQ Community. Learn about the diverse experience, interests, and backgrounds of DQ dwellers. Read on, and Meet Your Neighbor.
Describe your personality in 3-5 words/adjectives and expound. Curious/interested – My parents really sparked a zest for learning, perhaps that’s why I’m a teacher and a travel junkie! Social—Meeting people is something I adore, and perhaps what drove me to being a restaurateur, writer—and teacher. I not only enjoy networking—but also helping people meet each other. This was also, by the way, totally inspired by my very social parents; they constantly entertained. Energetic - I like getting things done—whether it’s work, writing, exercise, cooking—all of the above! Energy is a hugely important com-ponent in my life and one I strive to maintain. What hobbies are you into? Why do you love doing it/them? I love hosting-- cooking for my husband, two grown-up kids, other family and friends. Additionally, I take great pleasure in reading, writing, listening to music, running, and dancing. From which country are you from? The United States--I was born on Fifth Avenue in NYC. I’ve lived in NYC and outside NYC for years, as well as in Barcelona, Spain, and Lima, Peru. And though I haven’t lived in other places, I’ve had the wonderful chance to travel through a lot of Latin America, and feel a strong affinity to many elements of Latin culture. Though, after two years of spending substantial time in Saudi Arabia, I’m feeling more and more that my Saudi soul is growing, too. What brought you to Riyadh? I had a consulting job with the Institute of International Education and the Saudi Ministry of Education. After that, I had
a short-term education-related writing job, and then started working last June as Learning and Development Director for Turquoise Mountain, which is a non-profit dedicated to the work of Saudi artisans and the preservation of Saudi heritage crafts. I have the honor of meeting a large and diverse group of artists, learning about their work—ranging from palm weaving and zari gold embroidery, to traditional wood and plaster work—and writing about it. It’s been an amazing experience. I am lucky to have had this privilege of meeting so many, many, many talented people. What changes have you seen/experienced in Riyadh since you first came here up to now/today? Wow—so many! From women driving, to live music, —to a myriad of new venues, restaurants, and so many different opportunities. I primarily see changes in women; the young women I have the pleasure of working with are so inspiringly smart and ambitious; I see them more infused with possibility than ever before. What’s your day like in the DQ? Kindly walk us through it. Well, now that I think about it, it’s not too different from life at home in NY. If I work “at home,” I get up, walk either inside (treadmill) or outside, eat, write for a few hours, walk again, and eat again! I guess that’s not too exciting, but I do really enjoy it all! What do you like most about the DQ? I like the security I feel, as well as the freedom to walk around. Walking around is huge. As a New Yorker, it’s one of my fundamental “musts” in life! And add people watching to that list! When I first came back and found Oud Square, I was mesmerized—so much so, that I could hardly focus on my colleagues’ conversation; there was so much crowd watching to take in! Love that! Now we’ve also got the farmer’s market—not to mention block festivals---so the people-watching opportunities have, thankfully, increased! What is something you wish the DQ had, but currently doesn’t? I wish we had some local dance classes! Ah—and Arabic conversation classes, though maybe those exist and I haven’t found them yet? Any tips for your DQ neighbors? Take advantage of where we are…walk around and look. There’s so much to see! PHOTO CREDIT TO MARGARET RIZZUTO
