DQ CELEBRATES SAUDI NATIONAL DAY IN OUD SQUARE The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrated its 90th Saudi National Day last September 23, 2020. While festivities are subdued this year because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Kingdom still held a few activities that brought hope and joy to its citizens and residents. A colorful air show and grand fireworks display were broadcasted through Saudi TV and the General Entertainment Authority’s social media accounts. Concerts were held with limited audiences. In the Diplomatic Quarter, Oud Square was buzzing with fun activities, buildings and establishments were decked in green, and Saudi flags were distributed to kids.

COVER
STEPPING TOWARDS A HEALTHIER SAUDI ARABIA The Saudi Sports for All Federation has been pivotal in boosting the health and wellbeing of Saudi Arabia. We find out how the organization has put the Kingdom on the fast track to fitness through a series of events, activities, and initiatives.
T
he Saudi Sports for All Federation (SFA) is a dynamic and proactive community sports and wellness organization that strives to inspire and promote a healthy lifestyle in Saudi Arabia. The SFA does this in a number of ways, from countrywide events, campaigns and challenges, to information via the SFA website about nutrition, mindfulness and good health practices. Headed by the Federation’s President, Prince HRH Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal Al Said, and Managing Director Ms. Shaima Saleh Al-Husseini, the SFA works closely with government bodies such as the Quality of Life program within Vision 2030, and various ministries including the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs (MoMRA) to ensure public spaces are optimized for activities. SFA has developed a number of key partnerships with private sector entities including PepsiCo and Nike, and global bod-

ies including the World Health Organization, TAFISA, and numerous sports federations and providers. These partnerships allow the SFA to facilitate, enable, promote and invest in health and wellbeing across the country. A key goal of SFA is to play a leading role in realizing Vision 2030’s healthy lifestyle ambitions through its Quality of Life program. Central to this is helping increase the percentage of people in Saudi participating in physical activity at least once per week to 40%. Participation has already risen from 13% in 2015 to 25% in 2019, so the SFA is well on the way to meeting this target. On the ground, the SFA wants to ensure that all members of society have access to fitness and wellbeing, no matter who they are, where they are, or what their circumstances are. Whether it’s through physical activity, youth ini-

tiatives, or nutritional advice, the SFA hopes to energize, encourage, and educate people across every province in Saudi Arabia. The SFA has been helping change an entire society’s mindset towards physical activities; a feat that seems impossible to achieve. However, SFA has been breaking barriers one step at a time to achieve this goal by providing guidance, sound advice, and engaging events.
“One of the great barriers to having people adopt and internalize healthy habits is a lack of support. Guidance, sound advice, and engaging and fun events, help give people structure and a sense of community that is key to creating lasting change.”
This was especially the case during lockdown, when people were looking for ways to either stay active or become active, as well as find some kind of connection with others despite social distancing. SFA was able to provide this connection in innovative and enjoyable ways through numerous online events. An SFA insight report highlighted the impact of such initiatives, with a 60% increase in people walking, and 30% increase in people running between March and July.
“The ministries, federations, ambassadors, and groups that we partner with do an amazing job in opening up opportunities; reaching out to people across the country and making it easy and fun to stay fit and healthy. It’s a team effort that is really paying off,” he said, emphasizing that SFA is an inclusive and agile entity looking to continue to invigorating the national dialogue on wellness.
The SFA also goes to great lengths to ensure everybody is included. “It’s important to us that everybody feels welcome at any SFA event, as well as on our website and social channels. Our efforts are designed for all of society, from the absolute beginner to the professional athlete. This democratization gives everybody an entry point, removing barriers - real or perceived - that may have existed before,” said Mr. Osamah Saleh Alnuaiser, SFA Director of Marketing and Communications.
The SFA sees Community Sports Groups (CSGs) is vital to supporting an active society, providing camaraderie, as well as a platform for people to share in their passion for sport. These groups bring vital inspiration, support and momentum to the healthy living movement, and we encourage as many to sign up with us as possible. Groups of five people or more that engage in regular physical activity can become CSGs, and they can do this by registering through the SFA website or via the free SFA mobile app

launched in July. Once registered, CSGs can participate in a variety of events - as well as creating their own – and can benefit from different types of support from SFA. Apart from providing access to facilities, and staging CSG-specific events – such as dedicated CSG sports challenges – SFA offers support through licensing, financial grants, sourcing volunteers, and providing communications. The SFA is also on hand to provide advice, guidance and best practices on how to organize events successfully, including finding the best facilities and securing the right permits. "We want these groups to succeed and flourish, and early support can be essential to their growth." Various CSGs have already created app groups, including groups for various team sports such as basketball and football, as well as running groups, hiking groups, and more. Walking, running, and cycling groups have proved particularly popular across all the regions of Saudi Arabia.
“SFA’s efforts are designed for all of society, from the absolute beginner to the elite athlete. This democratization gives everybody an entry point, removing barriers - real or perceived - that may have existed before.”
10
There are currently more than 300 CSGs registered with the SFA hailing from across the Kingdom. The SFA has created and hosted many events since its inception. “We are grateful to have enjoyed a lot of success with our events and activities, such as Step Together and Move to Game. Step Together is now in its second phase; a series of walk-run challenges in partnership with Nike that will take place across four weeks,” said Mr. Alnuaiser, adding that many competitors were children and seniors, and that families entered the July Step Together competition. The inaugural program took place in July, with more than 2,600 people signing up to run or walk either half or full marathons. Participants covered a combined distance of more than 44,850km. Move to Game was jointly launched by SFA and the Saudi Arabian Federation for Electronic and Intellectual Sports (SAFEIS). It merges gaming and physical fitness and has seen more than 150,000 participants aiming for 10 billion steps with the current tally at more than 8.6 billion! The SFA has also staged a Women’s Fitness Festival, a corporate challenge, and a Summer Camp – all online – as well as the Baytak Nadeek campaign (Arabic for Your Home, Your Gym), which reached millions of people across the country during the pandemic lockdown. Along with these activities, SFA has more plans in the coming months especially with the recent agreement with MoMRA to activate parks and public spaces in Riyadh, Al-Khobar, and Abha. The signing of the MoU represents

the first step in delivering the SFA’s Active Places mandate – one of three initiatives SFA is responsible for as part of the Quality of Life program; the other two being Active People and Initiatives for Residents of Saudi Arabia. “We will also seek to grow our partnerships, the most recent of which is with PepsiCo, who will join SFA in boosting participation in sports across the nation. As we’ve seen with the likes of Nike, numerous sports federations, and inspiring individuals across the Kingdom, a concerted effort really works, helping people countrywide adopt healthy lifestyles, and providing the foundations for a fit and well Saudi Arabia for years to come,” concluded Mr. Alnuaiser.

ancing has always been part of any nation’s cultural tradition, a practice that throughout history, allowed communities to bond, to participate in communal expression, and to share creativity. There is something liberating about letting your body movements tell your story, to express your emotions and simply let loose—even if you do so in solitude, with the furniture as your eager audience (cue in #quarantinelife). While dancing in Riyadh has only gained public traction in recent years, a lot of the dancers I’ve spoken to have had their passion for the craft ignited at a very young age. Some of them were able to take ballet classes within the city in local after school programs. Fast forward to where we are now, and you’ll find those very students becoming dance professionals in their own right. Likewise, with gyms and dance studios opening up, and classes becoming more accessible; women (and men, of course) are able to try different genres and appreciate dance in its many forms. A bit of a disclaimer, this list merely scratches the surface when it comes to exploring dance opportunities for women in Riyadh. It’s meant to point you towards people and places that can help you get started in your journey.

Samira offers classes that allow dancers to advance in levels and master techniques. While fun will always be part of the equation, as Samira noted, “ballet and taking a serious path towards dance in general teaches you discipline. You have to practice in between the classes, form healthy habits that would help you perform better. When she came to Saudi Arabia four years ago as a personal trainer, little did she know that it would also pave the way for her to rekindle her relationship with dance. Hannah is looking to connect with others who are keen to advance to the next level in the Kingdom and those who are interested in collaborating artistically and creating opportunities--- “I’ve met passionate and amazing talents from all over the Kingdom. Hannah Meraki Contemporary Dancer & Personal Private Fitness Instructor
Founded by recently appointed Saudi Sports for All Federation Ambassador and Mount Everest Summiteer, Nelly Attar; MOVE has been making Riyadh groove since 2017. It's home to one of the largest dance communities in the Kingdom, offering both advance and basic classes in a variety of genres. MOVE has expanded digitally during the lockdown, and it has proven to be an effective alternative platform. Partnering up with both international and local instructors, these online fitness and dance sessions have allowed MOVErs to stick to their active goals regardless of where they are. Currently, MOVE studio has reopened for private classes; with hopes of eventually being able to return to its usual programming in addition to hosting more events and workshops. “Our focus at MOVE would always be the community, the MOVE tribe is all about the good vibes, channeling positive energy through movements, and inspiring anyone and everyone to stay active and have fun doing it,” said Nelly.

One of the wonderful discoveries I’ve made in writing this piece as someone who’s a mere spectator is how helpful and supportive the local dance community is. Every talent I’ve spoken to went to mention other noteworthy dance professionals. Whether it be for fitness, recreation, or cultural performance, one thing is clear, this community’s enthusiasm and tenacity to keep pushing forward and work together is going to elevate dance in the country in ways we’ve never seen before.
Coach Muna Not Just a Zumbaholic Growing up in Riyadh, Muna Abdullah has always been passionate about dancing. Hence, it was rather expected by her contemporaries that in entering the world of fitness, she would be in part, specializing in dance classes. It was a natural progression for Coach Muna, who eventually became known in the local circuit for her energetic Zumba sessions. She has since then added other dances to her repertoire of offerings, from afro beats, Bollywood dance, salsa, and bachta. Coach Muna advocates dancing for fitness, not just for its physical benefits but as well as its positive impact on one’s overall wellbeing. “Dancing is such a positive avenue to express your emotions, to relieve stress, it’s a fun way to get fit but also a shared social experience --- a way to connect with others. Sometimes, you don’t overthink it, just follow the beat and move.” Instagram: @Zumbaholic84

DID YOU KNOW The Kingdom has dance ingrained within its folkart traditions. Growing up in Riyadh, I’d often come across men wielding swords and dancing to the accompaniment of drums (and most of the time, poetry too) on television or during local festivities. Ardha was originally performed as a battle dance, particularly in Najd. It has however evolved as a celebratory dance; with different variations depending on the region.

Tell us about your journey to become the CEO of Golf Saudi.
Sport has always been a major part of my life. I played professional football for Al Nassr in a seven-year career. After this, I completed my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Business Administration from Seattle University in the US, specializing in economics and finance. Upon graduating, I joined Farmers Insurance Group from Bellevue, WA and after six years there, I returned to Saudi Arabia to pursue regional business interests, becoming the CEO of Amana Cooperative Insurance, a publicly listed company on TADAWUL (the Saudi Arabian Stock Exchange), following a successful spell with Bupa Middle East and advisory roles for various companies including the tech firm Uptake. On special request, I was appointed as CEO of the Saudi Golf Federation in 2018; as one of many transformative catalysts for Vision 2030, overseeing the development of a multibillion-dollar investment in the development of the sport and its correlating commercial opportunities.
What makes you passionate about your work?
The great game of golf! Particularly grassroots golf, it can be enjoyed by everyone no matter their skill or experience. At Golf Saudi, we welcome everyone to enjoy the game and strive to have no bias towards age, gender, or background. Significant funds have been allocated for the development of our Mass Participation programme and in support of both our male and female National Teams. In 2021, golf

will be introduced to 20 new schools, attracting a minimum of 4,000 children to the game for the first time. Also, we will be rolling out a “Teach the Teacher” programme, which will see Golf Saudi PGA Professionals certify 100 PE teachers to teach golf to children in schools. At least 80 golf activations and events are scheduled this year to bring golf into the community in locations such as malls, parks, sporting events and concerts. As well as a ‘Golf in the Workplace’ strategy, which will take golf to the offices of major corporations, women’s business groups and into the Saudi workforce. Bringing joy to so many Saudis through our various Golf Saudi initiatives is what makes me so passionate about my job.
What does Golf Saudi contribute to the golf industry?
A huge amount! We are bringing Saudi golfers to the golf industry and the game of golf is rapidly developing in Saudi Arabia with further plans as part of our Vision 2030 plan. Our Vision 2030 plan will also attract more international golfers to come and play the fantastic courses in the Kingdom. However, as part of this process and our contribution to the wider golf industry, it’s important that we continue to set ourselves ambitious targets. Ahead of 2030, set out against our designated six core pillars, some example targets include: increasing golf club membership to 20,000, ensuring over one million Saudis have actively tried golf, attract at least 5,000 international golf visitors per annum, host 60,000 visitors to Saudi-based golfing events every year and oversee the construction of over twenty new golf courses.

Many of our team were new to the game of golf and therefore were influential in advising us on how to reach new audiences. At Golf Saudi, we actively encourage our employees to play the game - offering complimentary lessons, green fees and discounts on equipment to ensure there is no barrier for them to start playing. We regularly host away day’s at some of Golf Saudi’s best golf courses to give our employees the opportunity to try their game during the working week, so if they enjoy it, they’ll begin playing in their own free time.
What role do women play in developing the golf industry in Saudi Arabia? A very large role indeed! At Golf Saudi, we want to inspire many women to take up the great game of golf and awaken their interest in this wonderful sport. Golf Saudi ensures women have complete access to all the golf facilities.
What are the biggest challenges to developing the golf industry here in Saudi?
Our mass participation strategy is pivotal. The local market is mostly under the age of 30 therefore school partnerships, access to lessons and a promotional strategy to create awareness via our “Power of the Game” campaign and creating puting courses, simulator golf and introductory programs such as SNAG golf to stimulate interest among the general public should be vital in the growth of Golf in KSA. We are also looking into what type of golf course developments will trigger the best response amongst potential players and beginners. For example, we have plans to look at how municipal style golf is utilised to provide easy and affordable access, but also a form of the game that accommodates the vast majority’s standing as beginners. Wider landing areas with less ardent carries, firmer running surfaces are all being reviewed to ensure beginner ease. We are developing academies and have included many training facilities in our initial development plans. Entertainment options, such as TopGolf, are being developed for current players and those currently with an interest in the game.
We have been working closely with the Ladies European Tour and this November will see history made when the inaugural Aramco Saudi Ladies International presented by Public Investment Fund takes place in the Kingdom. The tournament is going to be a monumental moment for the country - the first women’s professional golf event. It is key for us to create a platform that attracts women from around the Kingdom to come and witness top-flight sports stars compete and to set the pace for joining the global equality movement. To value a female-led interest in the field, we at Golf Saudi felt past amounts weren’t sufficient and focused on raising the prize money to $1 million. Both Golf Saudi and the LET are motivated to lead a drive towards the “journey of change” and be part of Saudi Arabia’s transformation to provide equal access to all sports for the next generation.
Saudi Arabia has a unique geography with diverse landscape. With the development of the hospitality sector, golf can be a part of the economic growth of KSA tourism with its unique position in the Golf market. The Golf Saudi Summit held on February 2-4, 2020 brought together industry captains and focused on how to best mobilise the golf industry here.
Can you tell us about the importance of building a great team and how you have done that with Golf Saudi?
Internal work culture is very important to us at Golf Saudi. We have a high number of Saudi citizens, females and a considerable number of international employees in our team which inject different values, viewpoints and ideas into our organization - this is key to our success and future growth.

We have also secured a partnership with Golf Environment Organisation (GEO) to create a national strategy that ensures the highest standards are mandated through all golf developments. And finally we are working with STRI on national and regional soil, landscaping, water management and vegetation programs that will help us optimise the most effective foundations for sustainable growth.

Does the Diplomatic Quarter play a role in the future of golf in Saudi Arabia, and if so how?
With ambitious milestones, sustainability is one of Golf Saudi’s six pillars. We believe it is of paramount importance to our national transformation and is a top priority. At Golf Saudi we have unveiled our own progressive environmental strategy, which harnesses a range of pioneering environmental initiatives.
Yes, it does. We are currently working with MISK school and hope in the near future to roll out our schools programme to them. We will continue to host a select group of their students at Riyadh Golf Club, as part of Golf Saudi’s green grass programme, which gives pupils a “first-touch” of a golf club, as part of their curriculum in their PE classes and then links to our Golf Saudi higher level green grass programmes. In September 2020, the Saudi Golf Federation also signed a memorandum of understanding confirming our desire to jointly roll out a golf education and training programme, known as “Get Into Golf”, in partner managed schools throughout Saudi Arabia, which we hope schools in the Diplomatic Quarter will be an important part of.
How do you envision the future of golf in Saudi Arabia?
Our future vision is clear: ▪ To educate, integrate and champion the great game of golf, as a catalyst of Vision 2030 and Quality of Life 2020 ▪ Strategically invest in all levels of the sport to establish a new ecosystem in Saudi Arabia, whereby the game and its socio-economic benefits can flourish ▪ Provide residents of Saudi Arabia unparalleled access, via traditional and modern means, to embrace the skills required to enjoy the game

FOR THE LOVE OF
FOOTBALL BY AEVAN CARO Ever seen a coffee shop filled with a huge number of people with mostly men shouting and cheering from time to time? Have you experienced being stuck in traffic due to a sudden street party? They are probably celebrating a win of their favorite Saudi football team. The intense fascination and deep love of Saudi Arabia for the game of football are beyond words. But we will try to put them into words in this primer.
O
n any normal day, groups of men, both young and old, would fill outdoor football fields in some districts all over the Kingdom and play until late at night. Nowadays, indoor football has been popular too. When there is no available playing area in a certain neighborhood, Saudi football enthusiasts can turn any empty streets or vacant lots into a football field in an instant. From north to south, east to west of the Kingdom, it’s all about the sport of football: kicking the ball to a much-coveted GOAL!

Football, or soccer in some parts of the world, has a very long history which traces back to ancient China in third and second century BC, with a ball-kicking game called cuju, but the current form of the sport arose in England in the middle of the 19th century which led to the formation of The Football Association in 1863, the oldest football association in the world, who set the rules of football as we now today. Arguably the most popular sport in the world, football is played by two teams of 11 players each on a grassy football pitch and is divided into two halves of 45 minutes, beginning at the center of the field, with the main objective of scoring more goals against the opponent. The game is played by kicking a spherical ball or hitting it with any parts of the body but not to be touched by hands and arms while the ball is in

In international tournaments and friendly invitational matches, Saudi Arabia is represented by their national football team, Al Suqour Al Akhdar or the Saudi Green Falcons. The color green, which is the shade of their uniforms as well, represents the color of the Saudi Arabian flag. The falcon is a precious bird in the Arab countries and a symbol of Saudi Arabia that signifies courage and strength. It is also known for its excellent vision and speed in attacking its prey. The Saudi Green Falcons is recognized as one of Asia’s most successful national teams for bagging three AFC Asian Cup championship titles. They won their first title on their first time to qualify for the Asian Cup in 1984 when they faced China in the finals in Singapore with a 2-0 victory. In 1988, they defended their title against South Korea in a tough matchup hosted by Qatar which was decided through a penalty shootout with the score of 4-3. It was a finals match against the host country, United Arab Emirates, in 1996 when they clinched their third title with a 4-2 triumph out of penalty shootout. In addition to these, the Green Falcons finished in runner-up positions in 1992, 2000, and 2007. Qualifying in the strenuous competition of FIFA World Cup has been achieved by the Green Falcons five times. The US-hosted 1994 FIFA World Cup holds the best World Cup finish by the Saudi national football team where they reached the round of 16 but was defeated by Sweden, 3-1, and landed 12th place in the overall rankings. In their next FIFA World Cup stints, the Green Falcons finished in the group stages and did not reach the knockout phase, which were in 1998 FIFA World Cup held in France, 2002 FIFA World Cup hosted by South Korea and Japan, 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, and 2018 World Cup in Russia.

T
he distinguished history of Russia is derived from the ancient Slavic tribes combined with the impressive victories of Peter the Great and the Romanovs, which spanned until the modern development of the country in the 21st century. The cultural heritage of Russia is even more remarkable and multifaceted than the country itself. Not surprisingly, more than twenty-nine of Russia's cultural and natural heritage sites have been included on the UNESCO list of outstanding human values, which encompasses a significant stage in recorded history. For centuries, the modern capital of Russia, Moscow, has been seen as a treasure trove of carefully preserved cultural traditions. city. It has become a symbol of the country’s greatness, and its location is cherished since it overlooks the Moscow River, St. Basil's Cathedral, Red Square, and the unique Alexander Garden. Nowadays, Moscow remains the busiest subway system in Europe and ranks as the third busiest system in the world. St. Petersburg has played a vital role in Russian history. As the historical capital of the great and famous Romanov Empire, it is also known as the Northern cultural Capital of Russia. It is a center of cultural, historical, and architectural landmarks. St. Petersburg is an imperial city of elegant canals and bridges, mesmerizing Neva, breathtaking white nights, and outstanding edifices. When history recognizes the renowned cultural heritage of the world, Russian poets, scholars, musicians, and artists rightfully occupy the most honorable places in the list of those most often cited. Thus, the Golden Age of Russian classical literature presented the world such iconic writers as Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol, and Ivan Turgenev. In addition, the novels and stories by Fyodor Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy, and Anton Chekhov are considered to be some of the most extraordinary narratives of Russian history of their times. Yuri Gagarin was the first person to travel into space, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky created a musical legacy that included such classic lyrical works as Swan Lake and the Nutcracker. Finally, the masterpieces of genius and visionary artists as Ivan Aivazovsky, Marc Chagall, Ilya Repin, Wassily Kandinsky, and Isaac Levitan complement the collection of the world's most cherished and admired works of art. in Russia. The Azimov Mosque, constructed in 1887, is considered to be one of the prime examples of these efforts. Bilateral Relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Russian Federation The history of bilateral diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Russia dates back to 1926. At that time, the work of the government of the Soviet Union helped the country to become the first to establish full diplomatic ties with the Kingdom of Hejaz and Najd. Over the past nine decades, this collaboration has witnessed numerous achievements, along with many periods of turmoil. However, because of the strong leadership of these two countries, in the 21st century, Saudi-Russia ties are considered to be a stable and reliable collaboration based on mutual respect and trust. In 2017, King Salman began a new era of cooperation with Russia during his historic four-day visit to Moscow. During this visit, the leadership signed more than fifteen agreements on cooperation; in such vital areas as oil production, military preparedness, and space sectors. On this occasion, Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, noted that Saudi-Russian relations "have reached a new qualitative level." Saudi Arabia and Russia have taken similar positions regarding the Middle East conflict settlement based on a "twostate solution." Therefore, the joint fight against terrorism and extremism has been one of the critical aspects of this strong bilateral cooperation between the two countries. In 2019, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a state visit to Saudi Arabia. The Custodian of Two Holy Mosques, King Salman, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman welcomed President Putin to the Al-Yamama Palace. During this visit, twenty significant agreements were signed, worth over $2 billion. The two countries have recently entered a new phase of cooperation. Currently, the Saudi-Russian Joint Committee is at work to accomplish the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, as well as the strategic development plans of Russia. At the same time, public and private organizations in Saudi Arabia and Russia are closely cooperating to achieve the goals and objectives of the binding agreements, signed in 2019. In September 2019, for the first time in the history, Russia was included in the list of 51 countries, whose citizens could apply for a tourist visa to the Kingdom. Furthermore, on August 30th, 2020, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the governments of Saudi Arabia and Russia to simplify the issuance of these visas. According to this agreement, both Saudi and Russian citizens would be eligible for a multiple-entry tourist visa for six months, a business visa for one year, or a long-term business visa for five years. Humanitarian visas were also included in the agreement.

Interview with the Ambassador
Sergey G. Kozlov
Embassy of the Russian Federation BY ALEXANDER WOODMAN
In 1926, Russia was the first country to establish diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Hejaz and Najd. What do you consider to be the most momentous achievements of these strong bilateral ties, which lasted for almost a century? Russia’s diplomatic relations with the countries of the Arabian Peninsula have a history of more than 100 years. In 1891, the Russian Empire opened a consulate in Jeddah to protect the Russian Muslim pilgrims performing the Hajj. As you have noted correctly, the Soviet Union was the first country to recognize the sovereignty of the young Saudi state, which was at the stage of shaping in 1926. I would like to note the big contribution to the development of the Soviet-Saudi relations made by the first Ambassador of the USSR to the Kingdom, Karim Hakimov. By the way, a Russian filmmaker is making a documentary film about him, entitled "Forgotten Pasha." I hope that the picture hits the screens soon and we will be able to enjoy it. Currently, Moscow sees Saudi Arabia the key state in the Arab-Muslim world. In recent years, cooperation between Russia and Saudi Arabia has been given a new impulse, which is based on the mutual desire of the of the two countries’ leaderships to develop cooperation in various fields. I mean economics, politics, and culture. The largest Russian companies work closely with the Saudi fuel and energy flagship Saudi Aramco. Not to mention the partnership between the Russian Federation and the Kingdom in the OPEC + format. By the way, the challenges that the world faces as the result of the outbreak of the global pandemic have brought our countries even closer together. Now, as you know, the issue of clinical trials and joint production of the Russian vaccine against coronavirus in KSA is being actively worked over.
DQ LIVING MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2020
In 2017, King Salman became the first Saudi Monarch to experience a state visit to Russia. Please elaborate on the pre-conditions of that historic visit. How did this visit contribute to a more robust and long-lasting commitment in this two-sided partnership? State visits at the highest level usually indicate the achievements between the countries on a high level of development of the political, economic, and cultural ties, as well as personal contacts between the leaders of different countries and are accompanied by the signing of important treaties and bilateral documents. Thanks to the efforts made by Russian and Saudi leaders, a number of agreements on cooperation in various fields were signed. The relations were brought to a new level. In particular, cooperation in such important areas for both countries as the fuel and energy complex has been intensified. New horizons were opened in terms of the investment activity. In addition to the twenty agreements signed during the state visit of President Vladimir Putin to the Kingdom (2019), there were several tourism and cultural cooperation agreements completed. Given the rich cultural heritage of the two countries, how do you view the idea of collaborative projects focused on increasing cultural diplomacy between the Saudi and Russian nations? Saudi Arabia has been recently closed to tourists. It was impossible for anyone except the nationals of the neighboring monarchies of the Persian Gulf to visit the country just to see its attractions. In October 2019, the Kingdom's authorities allowed the issuance of tourist visas, which is a historical event. Russian citizens got a unique opportunity to visit a country that, most likely, none of their friends or relatives had ever visited.
39
Tourism is a fertile ground for strengthening cultural ties, a good source of income for the country, and a way for a person to see something new and discover unexplored horizons. Of course, I have a positive attitude towards the development of joint projects in this area and I consider them quite promising.
It is a widely known and appreciated truth that Russia has given the world some of the best minds, which has included writers, musicians, scientists, and doctors. From your extensive experience, what do you see as the potential of Saudi youth? Can you further discuss any scholarships that are offered by the Russian Universities to the Saudi students?
In 2019, during the Saudi-Russia Business Forum, the emphasis was placed on the collaboration of the two countries to achieve the goals of Vision 2030 along with the Russian strategic development plans. What do you see as Russia's contribution to Vision 2030? What do you feel will be the role of the Kingdom in supporting Russia in achieving these development plans?
Saudi youth is very talented. In my opinion, young people in the Kingdom realize that they will be the ones to determine the future of their country. You can see that the Saudi young people are gaining knowledge in the top educational institutions around the world, diligently studying foreign languages, and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
I have already partly mentioned upon those important fields, in which our countries actively interact. The Vision 2030 program aims at diversifying the economy of Saudi Arabia through investments, creation of modern centers of science, culture, tourism etc. A unique opportunity opens for Russia to enter the Kingdom's market and help our Saudi partners to develop atomic energy, chemical industry, science, as well as to provide a tourist flow of Russians interested in visiting KSA. In its turn, Russia also seeks the implementation of our joint investment projects and the exchange of unique experience in various fields.
40
The doors of the Russian universities are always open for the young Saudis. The Russian Embassy is in charge of this issue. The Saudi youth is mostly interested in mastering technical subjects in Russia. The rich experience of our country allows us to prepare highly qualified specialists in this area. The author would like to express his sincere gratitude to Mr. Yury Medvedev and Mr. Andrey Brekhovskikh for organizing the interview, collaboration, and making this interview possible.

THE ROAD TO FITNESS, ONE STEP AT A TIME
Different fitness groups have made the Diplomatic Quarter their home. One of them is the Riyadh Women GettingFit (RWG), a group of ladies that are connected with their love for walking, exercise, a good cup of coffee and chats. Zuzana Kalous, founder of RWG, shares more details about her beloved fitness community.
What is the Riyadh Women GettingFit and what is the motivation behind the creation of the group? Initiated in 2019, the inspiration for starting Riyadh Women GettingFit is to empower women across the Kingdom and other GCC Gulf countries through fitness. Our mission is to build the region’s largest and most supportive female fitness community that inspires, supports, and trains every member of our community. RWG provides a great and safe place where members can meet and chat with other like-minded women in our community, share experiences and celebrate wins along the way. How many members do you have so far? RWG continues to grow in size and now we have over 300 members. We are trying to accommodate more but 2020 has been a year like no other with international lockdowns and suspension of commercial activities across entire countries. As individuals, we have been forced to make changes, both big and small, to our everyday lives. That said, we have been working hard to encourage and cultivate connections whenever we can during these challenging times. We know connections can lead to support and that support often leads to success – both in life and our fitness journey. What kind of exercises does the team do? In addition to our seasonal Thursday morning DQ walks, our members can take advantage of our online fitness activities. Even with the precautionary measures against the coronavirus like social distancing and staying home as much as possible, we can still exercise with others. In addition to our seasonal Thursday morning DQ walks, RWG offers free at-home online works for all its members. These online classes open the door for many of our members giving them the ability to do something healthy for their mind and body at home.
“Being part of Riyadh Women GettingFit community is a great way to start the day within a supportive and like-minded community. Zuzana’s fitness classes are fabulous and her enthusiasm definitely rubs off! Thanks for being a wonderful motivator.” - Kirsten Scott, RWG member

BIKING BY MUNEERA ALBEESHI
Already bustling with life, the Diplomatic Quarter recently welcomed a new and exciting business that adds another dynamic and promotes exercise, entertainment, and social engagement: SPiN — the first official rental bike shop in Riyadh. Manie AlKhaldie, founder and CEO of SPiN bicycle rentals, shares how he turned an idea into reality.
M
anie Alkhaldie is a young entrepreneur with a background in Industrial Engineering and currently works as a project management senior consultant. Among his many hobbies, he expressed that cycling has been his favorite since childhood. During his stay in San Francisco for college, he bought a hybrid specialized bike for commuting, which then started the idea of organizing biking trips across the Golden Gate Bridge. Since then, his passion for cycling drove him to think of ways that could increase the number of cyclists in Saudi Arabia as well as improving the quality of life through this hobby and sport.
After a long journey of research and business planning, Manie chose the DQ as the location of SPiN for several reasons: its beautiful landscaping, parks and trails and most importantly, low speed limits for cars that will allow riders to feel safe. Prior to choosing the location, Manie put out a survey in the community, and the results came back with 49% of participants choosing DQ as their desired destination for cycling.
“I started my research on the community and their desire for cycling, which was impressive. However, they faced a lot of challenges in order to get bikes; one of them being the limited supply of bicycles that makes biking expensive,” AlKhaldie said. Even with these challenges, he found out through HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, Minister of Sports, that cycling is still included in the top three practiced sports in Saudi Arabia along with walking and jogging. With this, he started SPiN bicycle rentals in the Diplomatic Quarter (DQ). His goal was for SPiN to provide quality services by providing accessible and affordable bikes available to everyone, all week long.

SPiNners on their Friday morning group ride.
SPiN officially launched on January 16, 2020. Manie described all the work that had been put in prior to the opening like construction, licensing, finding the perfect bikes and ensuring global safety standards for cycling as challenging and time-consuming but he pushed through. SPiN’s main priority is their customers’ safety, therefore, they have taken all the precautionary measures like providing helmets, safety vests, and lights. “Obeying traffic laws really matters, especially during peak hours where streets tend to be busier. By staying in the right lane, the right direction, and wearing safety equipment, we will have a safer environment for the whole community.” Manie added. Known to everyone, COVID-19 has taken a toll on a substantial number of individuals and businesses worldwide. “As a small business that was only three months old, we had been impacted with four months of zero income. However, SPiN managed to use its crisis management and risk mitigation plans with its contingency reserve to get through this crisis.” Manie said. Now that establishments are opening after the lockdowns and curfews in the past few months, SPiN is back in business providing the same services with additional precautionary measures to ensure passengers’ safety. “We have added a sanitization station at the entrance of SPiN where riders can sanitize their hands before and after each ride, not to mention the free masks and gloves given to them upon request.” He added.
DQ LIVING MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2020
As SPiN continues to attract more customers, Manie explained future plans of expanding inside the Diplomatic Quarter. “In collaboration with the DQGA, SPiN is working on opening its second location inside the DQ. The second location will allow riders to pick up bikes from one location and have the convenience of dropping them off at the other.” Furthermore, there are plans to expand outside the DQ and these will be announced shortly. “Our expansion has a lot of surprises for our SPiNners that includes but is not limited to monthly subscriptions. This feature will allow the riders to pick up their bikes without having to go through the payment process, which will enhance the accessibility to cycling.” Manie added. In alignment with the Saudi 2030 Vision, SPiN aims to contribute to a vibrant society, a thriving economy and an ambitious nation by promoting an active lifestyle by diversifying sports and hiring a local team. SPiNners, be on the lookout for more fun and happenings coming your way!

The menu boasts of a variety of Japanese dishes, from sashimi, sushi, maki, makimono, and other specialties crafted by the “Gold chefs. We began with an appetizer feast composed of Hamachi, Salmon No Karupatcho, Wagyu Beef Tataki, Gyoza, and Shrimp Wasabi. It was hard to choose a winner from the first course, but from the looks of it, the special sauce of the Salmon No Karaputcho and the buttery bites from the Wagyu Beef Tataki seemed to have captured our taste buds the most. Our sushi selection then made a grand entrance. It looked more like a sushi ship than a sushi boat to be honest, as it carried probably over fifty slices of their best maki rolls and a handful of delicious sushi. It was an overwhelming yet exciting sight to behold and will compel you to stop for a minute and admire the great work it took in assembling all of it. The Geisha Roll made an immediate impression with its flavorful combination of salmon, shrimp tempura, tobiko, cream cheese and sauce. The Samurai Special also packs a punch with its pairing of fresh salmon and smoked salmon together with avocado and cream cheese. Another recommendation from the brood would be the Hanzo

Natural Lifestyle Remedies for
HORMONE BALANCE BY HISSA ALSUDAIRY, MSC, RDN
Balancing your lifestyle and hormones is key to achieving your health and fitness goals. Hormone imbalance, if not under control, may lead to the onset of unwanted health complications and or development of disease. Let this article be your guide in keeping that harmony in your body.
H
ormones are the body’s vital signaling chemicals produced by the endocrine system. These important chemicals circulate via the bloodstream in order to send messages to various tissues and organs for biological functions to occur. There are several lifestyle factors that can have a great impact on hormone production and regulation. It is important to note that even the slightest of changes in life can cause a hormonal imbalance, which may lead to uncomfortable symptoms. Living a balanced lifestyle is important for overall health, fitness, and wellness. The lack of balance in your everyday life can send a cascade of adverse hormonal reactions that affects your physical, mental, emotional and biochemical state
Lifestyle Causes for Hormonal Imbalance: - Insufficient sleep - Stress and poor stress management - Excessive intakes of refined sugars, trans fats, and or caffeine - Over exercise (not taking rest days for muscles to recover) - Skipping meals or irregular meal times - Overeating or under eating - Emotional distress - Dehydration
56
Signs and Symptoms of Hormonal Imbalance: - Irritability - Insomnia - Insulin resistance - High or low blood sugar - Frequent urination - Irregular or loss of menstrual cycles - Very dry or oily skin, breakouts and or acne - Weight gain especially in the midsection (“stress belly) - Difficulty losing weight - Prominent facial hair for women (especially along the jawline) - Digestive complications - Constipation - Water retention - Inflammation - Puffiness- Hair loss
of well-being. Hormonal imbalance occurs when the body makes too much or too little of a certain hormone. Fortunately, some hormone imbalances can be managed through simple dietary and lifestyle practices. The following lifestyle tips may help improve hormone balance. The Importance of Nutrition and Hormone Balance Regular meal times provide the body a steady supply of energy and nutrients and is ideal for keeping hormones centered. When the body is deprived of enough calories, vitamins, minerals, and water, the body will function at a compromised state which may lead to hormonal imbalance.
If you are trying to lose weight, reduce calories gradually. Severe calorie restrictions place the body under a level of stress, causing spikes in cortisol (a stress hormone), which in turn amplifies the need to store fat. Chronically over consuming calories, especially in the form of refined sugars and trans fats, may lead to unhealthy weight gain and possible development of insulin resistance. Insulin is a hormone important for shuttling energy in the form of glucose (sugar) into the cell. Insulin resistance is when the cells no longer respond to insulin. This inability to enter the cell, deprives your body of energy and causes glucose to stay in the blood causing high blood sugar levels. Consistently high blood sugar levels may lead to health complications such as diabetes.
DQ LIVING MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2020
HEALTH The following tips are helpful in maintaining hormone balance: ▪ Focus on whole food sources of carbohydrates that are rich in fiber such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, brown bread, etc.) The natural fiber in whole foods helps reduce rapid spikes in blood sugar that normally occur when consuming foods that are highly processed and stripped off of key nutrients. ▪ Include healthy fat sources such as olive oil, avocado, nuts, and seeds to improve satiety, slow down digestion and maintain blood sugar levels. ▪ Consuming adequate lean protein helps produce hormones that suppress appetite and help you feel full longer. Include a minimum of 20–30 grams of protein per meal. ▪ Hydrate with water and some herbal or green tea, and limit coffee to 1-2 cups early in the day to give your body enough time to metabolize the caffeine. ▪ Limit excessive intakes of highly processed foods that contain refined grains, sugar, hydrogenated oils, trans fats, fried foods, artificial additives, colors and preservatives. ▪ If you consume animal products, make sure they are labelled hormone free. ▪ Avoid storing food or water in plastic containers. Plastic, if exposed to hot temperatures, can release harmful chemicals that may disturb hormone balance. ▪ Limit the use of microwaves. Getting Enough Good Quality Sleep Sleep is so important for the body to rest and recover from all its functional duties. Allowing for cells and tissues to heal, rebuild and restore supplies in order to take on the new day. If we deprive our body of sleep, the lack of recovery will place the body under stress and increase inflammation. The hormone responsible for sleep is melatonin, and it can be disrupted by stress hormones, blue-light, and unhealthy foods.
Sleep requirements and strategies to help improve your sleep cycle to aid in hormone health: ▪ Obtain 7-9 hours of quality sleep. Allowing your body to complete all sleep cycles will also assist in hormone balance. ▪ Sleep and wake up around the same time each day ▪ Avoid blue-light emitting electronics and bright house lights 2 hours before bed. Try to dim the lights to the lowest settings to help the natural development of melatonin, which is a sleep hormone. Again, being able to relax will help reduce presence of elevated cortisol levels which can block melatonin production. DQ LIVING MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2020
▪ Avoid caffeinated beverages 6 hours before bed. ▪ Build a nighttime and morning routine. Being able to ease into the start or end to your day is helpful for transitional hormones to level out. Having a morning routine especially will help reduce that stressful rush out the door, which can then raise harmful cortisol levels.
Stress is No Stranger to Anyone Stress can truly wreck havoc on our health, especially for hormone regulation. Stress causes adrenaline and cortisol hormones to rise. Adrenaline is known as the flight or fight hormone, causing the body to react quickly to avoid danger in order to stay alive. It triggers a cascading response to increase heart rate, constrict blood vessels, channeling blood to muscles and tissues. Cortisol in small amounts has a protective purpose as well but unlike adrenaline, cortisol can be chronically high if we don’t have effective ways to manage daily stressors. Cortisol normally increases in order for the body to wake up from sleep. High levels of cortisol at the wrong time however can disrupt sleep by blocking the enzymes that produce the sleep hormone melatonin. Therefore, it is important to engage in stress reducing techniques to reduce cortisol. De-stressing techniques: ▪ Engage in fun and relaxing hobbies ▪ Go for a nature walk at your favorite trail or park in the DQ ▪ Listen to soothing music ▪ Do regular exercise and try to practice yoga ▪ Getting enough sunshine helps with releasing feel good hormones like serotonin and dopamine ▪ Treat yourself to some self care and relaxation at your favorite DQ Spas If you find that you are having complications with some of these symptoms, consult your physician or endocrinologist (hormone health specialist). If you need more information regarding a diet plan for hormone balance or other nutrition related inquiries, please feel free to contact me at Alkaff Clinics to arrange an appointment for a consultation. The progress of Saudi Arabia in recent years has opened up not just the tourism and entertainment industry, but has also given way for more athleticism to flourish in the country. From hobbyists to thrillseekers, there are more options now to get that adrenaline rush!
W
e are often asked on what activities residents and visitors can do in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. If you asked us a few years ago, that would be mall hopping, shopping, and eating out. However, these days, Riyadh has so much to offer, including physical activities that can boost a healthier lifestyle! Wait, shopping involves walking right? Haha. From various sports to thrilling adventures, the city has finally opened up pathways to a more active lifestyle. One activity that’s gaining popularity in Riyadh is paragliding… power paragliding that is! Also known as paramotoring, powered paragliding is a form of ultralight aviation where the pilot has a back-mounted motor and a chute that provides enough thrust to take off using a paraglider. Some paramotors can sit two persons. This activity is not that new in Riyadh; we’ve seen these paragliders in the desert before but now, there’s a tour group named Experience Riyadh (+966-59-362-7485) that specializes in paragliding complete with snacks, transportation, air-conditioned waiting rooms, and ambulance on stand-by in case of emergency.

Another sport that has picked up speed in the past few months is biking or cycling. The Diplomatic Quarter has SPiN Rentals (IG @spin.sa), a bike rental shop that lets you enjoy the scenic route of the DQ trails. You can find more details on SPiN Rentals on page 40 of this issue. If you’re outside the DQ, try Meow Bikes (Whatsapp +966-58-1445948) where you can rent bikes anytime and anywhere (in Riyadh). They will deliver the bikes to your location and you can ride it anywhere you want to go. Just be careful, of course. Read on the fast-growing biking/cycling culture in Riyadh in DQ Living’s 2020 Issue 2. You can also get tips and a list of bike shops from the article.
Archery has been used for hunting and combat for centuries but in this city, it’s a recreational activity. There are some archery ranges in Riyadh and the most popular is the Archery Range (yes, that’s the well-thought of name, Whatsapp +966-55-880-8617) where you can aim and shoot arrows for a bull’s eye. They also sell bows and arrows, provide training, and rent ranges and arcade games for your events. Rates start from SR 150.
Are you fascinated with equestrian? We’ve always been fascinated with this sport and it’s our most watched game in the Olympics of yesteryears. We also watched the Equestrian Festival during the Diriyah Season last year. There’s something about horseback riding that’s elegant and breathtaking. If you’re interested in the sports (and not just watching like we do), there are equestrian centers in Riyadh that you can enroll in. Visit the Al Khayala Equestrian Club (+966-56-227-1900) in Ash Sharq or the Vogue Equestrian Club (Whatsapp +966-53-414-4444). If you’re not into a particular sport but want to be more active, then walk. Walking in Riyadh has been a default physical activity and with the opening of more parks in the city, there are more venues for you to walk, brisk walk, jog, or even run. Do it around popular places like Prince Sultan University or the King Fahd Medical City. If you want a change of scenery, go out of Riyadh center and visit the Lakes Park or King Salman Park. Find the sports or hobby that works for your body and lifestyle. Be more active and have some fun.

I
n August, I began my summer internship with the DQ Living Magazine. In a short period of time, my aim was to create a lasting impact that would carry on beyond my internship experience. This encouraged me to launch the DQ Living Giveaway, an initiative where DQ Living creates simple contests in cooperation with businesses in the DQ. Participating businesses award prizes to giveaway winners, allowing them to discover what the DQ has to offer. This initiative has connected the DQ community and supported local businesses, especially during a time when we have all been socially disconnected by the coronavirus pandemic. It has also been an exciting way to share news of upcoming developments as well as tell the stories of existing businesses in the DQ.

Tell us about yourself. I am a Saudi American who was born and raised in Riyadh. I graduated from Penn State University with a double major in International Relations and Journalism. Until recently, I was living and working in New York City. How would family and friends describe you? My family and friends would describe me as adventurous, honest, and determined. I am always open to exploring new destinations, having unique experiences, and meeting different people. Some of my favorite memories and closest friends are from my solo trips abroad. I am an optimistic realist who believes in the power of the truth, so I don’t shy away from sharing my thoughts. When something is important to me, I don’t give up until I have accomplished what I set out to do. What have been the strongest influences in your life? Both the experience of growing up in Saudi Arabia as a female, especially during the 90s, and living in New York City have been the strongest influences on me. Collectively, these experiences allowed me to see and live life from very different perspectives and identify positive elements of each culture. What brought you back to Riyadh? Opportunity. I returned to Riyadh to reconnect with my roots and be a part of the Kingdom’s historical transformation. What led you to your career and how has Saudi Arabia helped you in your career goals? I enjoy finding solutions to complex problems, and ultimately, helping make the world a better place. As a government strategy and policy advisor, I get to do just that for high-profile projects and ambitious clients. There is no shortage of interesting projects in the Kingdom. With a lot of the work here, you really get to help build something from scratch and play a key role in producing visible impact for your clients. This is really an exciting time to be working in Saudi Arabia, and I feel privileged to be contributing to a bright future for us all here. What are you most proud of accomplishing so far? I am proud of making some bold, challenging decisions that led me to where I am today. I said yes to opportunities that allowed me to grow.

What are your thoughts and insights on being a resident of Saudi Arabia? Life in Saudi Arabia is always an adventure! The people are kind. You will probably end up staying longer than you planned. When you leave, most of your friends and family back home won’t understand what you experienced here because they believe a narrative from the news more than a personal account from you. You will continue to travel to different countries and live in different cities, but you’ll soon discover that those places are “simply not Saudi.” Where are your favorite places to visit in Riyadh? I have a soft spot for Tahlia Street and Olaya Street since those are the areas where I grew up, and some of the best restaurants and shops in Riyadh are located there. How long have you lived in the DQ? I have been living in the DQ for nearly 6 months now. What do you like most about the DQ? I like that the DQ is a cultural oasis in Riyadh. The DQ is a welcoming place where you can comfortably enjoy one of the many parks, hiking the trail, or reading at a café. The DQ is also a place where both Saudis and expats live, work, and socialize together. This results in an energetic, international scene. The DQ is mix of city and nature as well as local and foreign – all things I value in a neighborhood. Any tips/recommendations/advice for your DQ neighbors? My advice would be to take time to positively contribute to building a quality community and sustainable environment. This could be as simple as greeting your neighbors, throwing away your trash in designated bins, caring for the cats that live on your block, or driving safely. The little things add up. Your experience in Saudi Arabia will be heavily defined by who you spend your time with and the level of effort you put into exploring and understanding the country and its people. Take time to get out and about. Encourage yourself to have meaningful conversations and interactions. Push yourself to have experiences outside of your comfort zone.
