DUR HOSPITALITY LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
An Interview with Dur CEO Mr. Sultan bin Badr Al-Otaibi ALEXANDER WOODMAN
F
ounded in 1976, Dur Hospitality is recognized for managing, developing, and operating hotels and residential complexes in Saudi Arabia. Dur Hospitality's diversified portfolio includes 29 properties and 17 new hotel and residential projects under development. Dur Hospitality became one of the first companies to introduce the concept of five-star hospitality to the Kingdom. Nowadays, the company owns and operates several hotels throughout the Kingdom. It is also the first company in the Kingdom to establish the Saudi hotel brand Makarem, operating in the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. The

award-winning local brand specializes in providing authentic Saudi hospitality services following international standards. Building on its hospitality operations and asset management expertise, Dur has expanded its efforts on developing the residential sector by acquiring and managing a selected portfolio of high-tech projects with hospitality-focused services. Darraq Residences is one of the largest luxury residential projects of Dur Hospitality. Located in the Diplomatic

Quarter. Darraq Residences encompasses residential units, including villas and fully furnished apartments. In addition to apartments, Darraq Residences offers outstanding public facilities, parks, sports clubs, schools, private health and recreation centers. For over four decades, the professional team of Dur Hospitality delivers outstanding projects spanning the entire experience from concept to design, construction, and operation. Dur CEO Mr. Sultan bin Badr Al-Otaibi discusses with us what makes Dur successful and what their next projects are.
Dur Hospitality has adopted a strategic direction built on the expansion and rapid development of properties and offerings presented to a wide range of visitors coming for leisure, business, or pilgrimage, in line with the Kingdom's ambitious targets outlined by Vision 2030 pertaining to the tourism industry.
Dur Hospitality has over four decades of experience in the development and operation of hotels and residential complexes. What is your vision for the next four decades?
The company continues to focus on developing its group of hotels, some of which will be managed under international brands in several key cities, while Dur's subsidiary brands will operate others, all of which pair unique Saudi hospitality values with the highest international standards. We are pursuing the strategic expansion of our current property portfolio and the development of luxurious residential compounds in prime locations, such as Darraq , one of the prime projects in our portfolio having 428 units in the Diplomatic Quarter.
As a Saudi-based company, we understand the market intimately, which ensures our hospitality offerings meet market demand. We also understand the socio-economic changes taking place in the country, which is undergoing rapid transformation and modernization, and continue to evolve and adapt to these changes, responding to with the introduction of new and innovative hospitality concepts.
In addition to especially dedicating operations to expanding the portfolio of the Makarem brand catering to Makkah and Madinah markets, with the aims to achieve up to 10,000 rooms by 2028. Likewise, Dur seeks to expand its other brands such as "Shada", specializing in serviced apartments and medium-sized hotels sector, targeting 3,400 rooms by 2025.

Holistically, Dur seeks to develop a business model that raises efficiency and builds capacity to support its expansion plans and enhance its profitability while adopting the best technical standards and quality management systems to continually develop its offerings to be on par with top global standards. Please discuss the idea of "Authentic Saudi Hospitality" for Dur employees and customers. Saudi Arabian hospitality and generosity are globally famous and form a significant part of our local culture and heritage. When visitors arrive in the Kingdom, they look forward to enjoying an array of unique and brilliant local experiences. To ensure this, we proudly embrace authentic Saudi values and infuse them into every aspect of our services and at every level of our organizational structure

to reflect a local yet modern spirit to our guests and offer them an unmatched and memorable experience and a sense of hospitality that makes them feel at home visiting the Kingdom. DARRAQ Residencies in DQ is one of the most significant luxury projects. What is the possibility of implementing more reasonable residential complexes by Dur? Dur understands the necessity of presenting a diverse and attractive portfolio of properties and hospitality offerings that fulfill guests' different needs and preferences. We continue to invest in all kinds of accommodation options through a rich lineup of specialty brands, including Shada hotels, Dara serviced apartments, Darraq luxury residences, and Makarem Hotels. Many of our projects are still under development to ensure they offer the ideal

level of service once they are fully developed and open to guests. A new luxurious residential project is under development, consisting of 78 Villas on King Khaled’s Road and with a close proximity to the north gate of DQ. Whether Marriott Hotel DQ, Marriott Executive Apartments DQ, or Darraq, what made you bring up those properties in the DQ? The first phase of Darraq was initially built 23 years ago. Under the name of “Future homes”. Our aim was to build high end residences inside the Diplomatic Quarters. This project was supported by custodian of the two holy mosques King Salman Bin Abdulaziz during his tenure as the Chairman of The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC).
certified hotel in Saudi Arabia. A modern yet authentic experience with elegance that encapsulates the rich heritage of the region in a contemporary expression. Moreover, more than 600 locally sourced art adorns the hotel interiors, with paintings, sculptures, and photographs contributed by 14 talented and renowned Saudi artists. Public spaces have been carefully constructed to be bright and spacious, and are enhanced by lavish skylights that allow in substantial natural light throughout the day.
We kept on expanding our Darraq portfolio year after year. The project now includes 428 fancy housing units featured by their architecture, high quality construction, and smart homes systems. We weren’t planning on building a compound as much as we were planning to build a community inside the Diplomatic Quarter to align with The Quality of Life Program one of the Saudi Vision 2030 realization programs with a general aim of improving the individual's lifestyle in Saudi Arabia. As for Marriott DQ, we wanted to create and develop a residential piece of art in this prime location, a hotel with an innovative design inspired by the geological layers of Wadi Hanifa. The major DQ advantage is security and privacy. The gated entrances of the area assure safe keeping and the entrance of residents and employees only. DQ is also a beautifully landscaped area with a number of parks. A footpath surrounds the area, which meanders through quaint grottos & gardens complete with sun shading & interesting water features. On the western side the footpath overlooks Wadi Hanifah with its many palm groves & farms. Very pleasant for evening & weekend strolls. DQ has facilities, clubs, parks, greenery and other aspects that entice residents to be part of this. Please elaborate on Makarem Hotels concept. When do you believe this brand will enter the international market and create a chain of hotels worldwide? Dur's Makarem brand is specialized in serving the pilgrims of Makkah and Madinah visiting for Hajj and Umrah, a vast market unique to Saudi Arabia alone. Its model has been developed to serve this one-of-a-kind market with immense potential and opportunity. Makkah's hotels alone account for more than a whopping 64 percent of the Saudi hospitality sector, and a significant portion of Saudi Arabia's hotel pipeline activity is concentrated in the holy city, with 28,052 rooms under development in the holy cities, Makarem seeks to expand its portfolio to encompass 10,000 rooms by 2028. With twenty years of experience in hospitality, what will be your remarks about changing client's needs? How does Dur Hospitality predict market demands? During my years of serving in the hospitality sector, the market has witnessed continual changes with the emergence of new technologies and the reshaping of customer expectations. At Dur, we realize the vitality of adopting a flexible and dynamic approach to shape our strategies. For instance, COVID-19 has radically impacted guest preferences regarding hospitality offerings due to shifting perceptions of personal space, safety, and hygiene. Such impact is here to stay, and we as hospitality providers need to adapt and cater to those changes to be relevant in the market over the coming phase and beyond.
DQ LIVING MAGAZINE MAY-JUNE 2021
Moreover, and in line with the significant level of innovation and technological progress in Saudi Arabia, we are leading Dur to devise and implement a strategy to achieve comprehensive digital transformation and develop a business model that maximizes efficiency, leverages resources, adopts the best technical standards. What is your definition of 'leadership' and 'win-win' collaboration both with Dur employees and international partners? Our leadership approach is demonstrated by a high level of support and nurturing offered to all our employees and teams, especially during challenging times and unprecedented circumstances. We strive to maintain the best working environment and ensure employee satisfaction, productivity, and inclusivity at every level of our operations. We also continually foster the growth of our teams through training and development opportunities aligned with the market's developments and needs. I have learned over the years many lessons about leadership. They include: ▪ Listening: to what your peers and colleagues have to say. Listen to their opinions and ideas. ▪ Our people are our greatest asset. This is a belief shared by all of the entities in which I am involved in. Therefore education, training and employee satisfaction is key. ▪ Empowerment: empower your staff to make decisions. Adopt an egalitarian approach, not a dictatorship. ▪ Pick a good team: you and your business are only as good as the managers you recruit and delegate to. ▪ Motivate staff: this is crucial to the success of your business – and challenge them too. Respect and kindness go a long way: without them, you as a leader lose respect. Furthermore, as market leaders in the Kingdom, we provide our partners with significant investment and cooperation opportunities to grow their businesses, especially in light of the critical developments taking place under Vision 2030 that are set to position the Saudi hospitality industry at the forefront of the regional and global hospitality sectors.

force and domination. When the Berlin Wall was constructed in 1961, the gate ended up right next to the wall and was out of reach for everyone except for the East German soldiers for nearly 30 years. The Brandenburger Tor then became the natural scene for the official reunification of Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
I was born in 1989 in Brandenburg, in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). Until then, my parents only knew the world from an East German perspective. With their second child came a new reality. The Cold War was over, Germany was reunited and they were free - free to speak their mind, free to travel, and free to cross the Brandenburger Tor. Without the German reunification, my life and the lives of so many other ‘Ossis’ and ‘Wessis’ would have been very different. Thus, I am very thankful for this event in German history and I am happy that the Brandenburger Tor is there to remind me of it.
ANKE SALMGREN VON SCHANTZ Head of the Visa Section and responsible for Public Affairs at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany BRANDENBURGER TOR The Brandenburger Tor is probably the most famous German landmark. As the only surviving city gate of Berlin, it is a strong symbol for both the division and the reunification of Germany’s East and West. The Brandenburger Tor was built between 1789 and 1793. Friedrich Wilhelm II, the Prussian king, had asked his architect Carl Gotthard Langhans to create an arch that would crown the boulevard ‘Unter den Linden.’ The Brandenburger Tor has played different roles throughout German history. The Nazis used the gate as a symbol of

MUSEUMSINSEL (ISLAND OF MUSEUMS) The Museumsinsel is located in the historical center of Berlin in the middle of the river Spree, not far from the Federal Foreign Office. The Island of Museums is an ensemble of five museums surrounded by water, a small park, and the Berlin Cathedrale, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. Like the Brandenburger Tor, the Museumsinsel was a visionary project constructed under the order of Prussian kings, starting with Friedrich Wilhelm IV. The five museums were built between 1824 and 1930 by the most renowned Prussian architects. The first museum to be opened to the public was the Old Museum in 1830. It was later followed by the New Museum, the Old National Gallery, the Bode-Museum and finally, in 1930, the Pergamonmuseum.

The Pergamonmuseum is the most popular museum in Berlin, attracting the highest number of visitors. It displays the collection of Classical Antiquities, the Museum of the Ancient Near East, and the Museum of Islamic Art. The most famous work is the Roman Pergamon Altar which depicts the battle between gods and giants. However, due to construction works, it will not be on display until 2025. My personal favorite is the New Museum, which houses the Egyptian Museum and, among other treasures, the world-famous bust of Nefertiti. What I admire most is the building itself, combining original parts and traces of war with ultra-modern conversions. I love the ambience surrounding the Museumsinsel. When the sun is out, there are plenty of people loitering by the river bank while sipping a drink, eating a classical Döner Kebab or listening to street musicians as they breathe in the history of this unique place.
VLADIMIR DOROVSKI Deputy Head of Mission, Second Secretary and Chief of Consular Section at the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria SERDICA Famous for being at the crossroads between Europe and Asia for centuries, Bulgaria is full of historical places, ancient ruins, artifacts, and Thracian treasures. Sofia, the capital city founded 7,000 years ago, is one of the oldest cities in Europe.
SS. CYRIL AND METHODIUS NATIONAL LIBRARY St. Cyril and St. Methodius is the national library of Bulgaria, founded in 1878, and is the largest in the country. It is named after the brothers Cyril and Methodius, who were the creators of the Glagolitic alphabet. Later on, in 893, the Bulgarian/Cyrillic alphabet was established by the brothers’ disciples and was proclaimed at the Old Capital Pliska to be the official alphabet of Bulgaria. The new script was accommodated as a foundation for many alphabets and languages, mainly those with Slavic origin, including those used by Muslim Slavs. It is currently used - either exclusively or as one of several alphabets - in more than 50 languages. With the accession of the country to the European Union in 2007, Cyrillic became the third official script of the EU. Every year, on May 24th, Bulgaria celebrates the National Day of Bulgarian Alphabet, Enlightenment and Culture, and Slavic Literacy, with many events taking place around the library. We take great pride in our language and cultural achievements, and cherish May 24th as a major occasion for recitals, school parades, and various cultural happenings.
Lying at the heart of its bustling downtown is the Roman complex of Serdica (the former name for Sofia), which nowadays is a large open-air museum. Visitors can walk around the foundations of the preserved, 2000-year-old Roman road and amphitheater, right below the main institutions of the country - the Council of Ministers and the Presidency. Located above the ancient complex is the so-called ‘Triangle (or Square) of Tolerance.’ Three places of worship St. Nedelya Church, Banya Bashi Mosque and Sofia Synagogue, placed in a triangle-like square with two minutes’ walking distance between them - serve worshipers peacefully and simultaneously, in a way that is unique to the whole of Europe.

Its marker tells the story of an Ivatan chieftain who lived on Naidi Hill, which is considered a strategic location for town chiefs as it overlooks the town of Basco to the east and Basco Bay to the west. According to the story, the Ivatan chieftain received a message from the King of Spain offering protection in exchange for his conversion to Christianity. He accepted, and was baptized as Don Carlos Abad.
SAN AGUSTIN CHURCH San Agustin Church, the oldest Baroque church in the Philippines, is also known as the Archdiocesan Shrine of Nuestra Senora de la Consolacion y Correa, or the Immaculate Conception Parish. It is a Roman Catholic church under the auspices of the order of St. Augustine, located inside the historic walled city of Intramuros in Manila, inhabited by Spanish colonists. It is a church that has survived earthquakes, typhoons, and wars. It has a 400-year history and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993 as St. Augustine.
Basco Lighthouse has become famous for the traditional Ivatan dwelling, recognizable for its rubble masonry, attached to its base -- a testament to how intertwined the lighthouse is to the history of the hill it stands on and the people who have lived there for many generations.
It exhibits remarkable features such as retablos (altars) of high Baroque style and wall buttresses separating crypto-collateral chapels. What makes it unique are its ceiling paintings in the tromp l'oeil style. The centuries-old church bore witness to 400 years of Spanish rule in the Philippines. It is very memorable for me because in 1983, I got married in this church. Since then, it has not been restored and has an adjacent museum which is a must-see when you visit Intramuros in Manila.

MANAL SHOAIB Personal Assistant to HE, the Ambassador of the Royal Danish Embassy Home Country: Egypt LUXOR Luxor is a world-famous city located in Upper Egypt, known to be the home of intact ancient Egyptian temples that date back almost 4,000 years. Luxor alone has one third of the world’s ancient monuments such as the Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, the Temple of Deir al-Bahri, and of course the beautifully constructed Temple of Hatshepsut. I visited Luxor in 2010 with my sister and a group of college mates for the first time in my life. I was fascinated by all the ancient glamor and beauty of this city. One of the places that enchanted me was the Valley of the Kings, especially the Tutankhamun tomb. Once you enter the tomb, you will be amazed by the colors and drawings around you. In addition to the Valley of the Kings, another spot that caught my attention was the Temple of Hatshepsut, which was built by Queen Hatshepsut and symbolizes the importance of the role of women in ancient Egypt. I returned to my hometown with the best memories and experiences of the kindness and generosity of the people of Luxor. The area has a special charm to it, particularly when you walk down the alleys with the sound of Umm Kulthum resonating from the different shops and cafes around you, in addition to the spiritual aura from the old mosques and shrines. It’s a feeling that is hard to replicate in any other place. The spot has always represented itself as a home to many of the renowned poets and novelists who found their serenity and inspiration in the alleyways of this district. There’s El-Fishawi Cafe, one of the oldest in Cairo (established in 1797), which was one of the Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz’s favorite cafés.

PHOENICIAN WALL IN BATROUN The ancient Phoenician sea wall was originally a natural structure composed of petrified sand dunes. It was reinforced gradually by the Phoenicians with rocks, and the wall as it stands today took its present shape in the first century BC. The Phoenicians used this wall as protection against sea storms and invaders, while during Roman times it again functioned as a quarry. The wall is 225 meters long and 1-1.5 meters thick. As a sea lover, this place has a special place in my heart. I remember walking the old streets of the beautiful city of Batroun to reach it. My friends and I used to climb the wall to sit and watch one of the most beautiful sunsets from up there.

ROBERT PARK Advisor at the Embassy of the United States of America MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL I love America’s National Park system. I visit national parks whenever I am near any. Mount Rushmore is a well-known national memorial located near Rapid City, South Dakota, United States. I appreciate the time, energy, and effort that went into creating Mount Rushmore. The majestic figures of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln are great reminders of the country's birth, growth, development, and preservation. The 60-foot granite faces carved in the mountain are man-made wonders and they symbolize the ideals of freedom, democracy, and the American dream. Their website captures some of the reasons for my awe: “The Mission of Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation is to protect and preserve the culture, tradition and living heritage of the North American Indians. The Foundation demonstrates its

eauty is universal. However, our beauty ideals have been shaped by various factors, whether it be cultural, historical or modern influences and trends. The ideals that women are asked to embody are quite challenging and more pressure has been exerted nowadays in this social media era. Physical ideas are changeable and shift from time to time, but what’s important is your own definition and notion of “beautiful”. Beauty must come from your aspiration to improve yourself and feel better about yourself. Beauty is not following unattainable standards which are demanding and effortful for women to achieve. Beauty is being happy with yourself. Beauty is being the best possible version of yourself, inside and out.

Applying filler or liposuction and fat transfer, for example, is a real art of sculpting, and will only succeed if the surgeon follows art standards. Surgeons should artistically add light and shadows in the right places so that the patient feels more beautiful and confident but can still
Cosmetic surgery can help you become more confident. People have different points of view on it but ultimately, it’s up to you if you want to have them done. In cosmetic surgery, beauty has a common point with art; they are harmonious as Leonardo Da Vinci’s Golden Ratio demonstrated in 1509. This equation, described in Vitruvian Man and Fibonacci’s Spiral, is found in all artistic creation and nature as well as in cosmetic surgery. This is this norm that I try to respect while sculpting a body or remodeling a face. My aim is not to transform people to reach beauty standards reflected by social media where women/men end up losing their individuality and uniqueness but to enhance the beauty of each person by rebalancing and re-proportioning their body and face through a personal approach. Eventually, when art meets beauty, patients' satisfaction and contentment will be clear as crystal.

THE ART OF THERAPY
W
hile a man walks away from himself, he comes apart and gradually loses his brightness. Although he feels lonely, lost, and confused, he keeps walking. He does not know where he should go or what to do, but he keeps moving from mirage to mirage in the hope of finding himself again. The art of psychotherapy is how to create a safe place to help a man understand and empathize with himself. Hence, he may trace his long journey and collect all pieces together again. Therefore, what does this journey look like from the inside? In this journey, we learn about our conditions, moods, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Moreover, we learn to understand how to control our lives and respond to challenging situations along with healthy coping skills. There are various approaches to psychotherapy such as Attachment-based, Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Compassion Focused Dialectical (DBT), Mindfulness-Based (MBCT), Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT), etc. Situations and a person’s needs determine the appropriate therapy approach that might be used. In addition, psychotherapy is known as counseling, talk therapy, psychosocial therapy, or therapy. Sometimes we (the therapists) use an additional combination allied with psychotherapy such as home visits for marriage and family therapy, animal-assisted therapy, and creative arts therapy like drawing or painting, dance, drama, or music. Eventually, not everyone who undergoes psychotherapy is diagnosed with mental illness. Psychotherapy can help to: ● Resolve conflicts. ● Cope with significant life changes. ● Understand unhealthy reactions. ● Relieve anxiety or stress. ● R ecover from abuse, trauma, or witnessing violence. ● Cope with sexual problems and sleep better. On the other side, psychotherapy may help to increase people’s awareness, improve the quality of life, and develop skills.

The emphasis on cultural sophistication in China is reflected in the belief that calligraphy, poetry, and painting were higher art forms compared to dance or drama. This belief has influenced all Chinese artists over the centuries and nowadays. Some of the greatest artworks found today are a result of ancient Chinese culture.
In 2010, China received 55.7 million foreign visitors. In 2012, it was the third-most visited country in the world. There is also a large volume of domestic tourism. In October 2012, an estimated 740 million Chinese holidaymakers traveled within the country. China is home to the world's largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites (55) and is the first tourist destination in the Asia-Pacific region. Euromonitor International has estimated that China will become the world's most popular destination for tourists by 2030.

Bilateral Relations The bilateral relations between China and Saudi Arabia are rooted in the past, as both societies and cultures were among the earliest civilizations on their continents. However, diplomatic relations were established in 1990. On July 21, 1990, H.E. Qian Qichen, Foreign Minister of China paid a visit to Riyadh and signed the Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Saudi Arabia with Prince Saud bin Faisal, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia. The Chinese Embassy of China in Riyadh was established the next day. In 1999, Chinese President Jiang Zemin became the first Chinese head of state to visit Saudi Arabia, where Strategic Oil Cooperation Agreement was signed. An agreement was reached that China will open its refining sector to Saudi Arabia. In turn, Saudi Arabia has been expected to provide Chinese investors with exploration and development opportunities. In the 2000s, the bilateral diplomatic and economic relations expanded to a more robust and solid collaboration. In 2004, Saudi Arabia and China initiated a series of regular political meetings, and Sinopec (China's state-run oil company) signed an agreement to explore gas in the Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali) in Saudi Arabia. In December 2005,

China and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) held their first formal talks. In January 2006, King Abdullah became the first Saudi monarch to visit China. During this state visit, King Abdullah signed five significant agreements on energy cooperation. The visit became an opportunity to discuss broader economic trade, taxation, technical agreements, and a vocational training agreement. In addition, a loan for urban development in China's Xinjiang province was confirmed by the Saudi Development Bank. These state visits by the Saudi and Chinese leaders have been continuous. Thus, in February 2019, the Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, made a state visit to China, where he met the Chinese President Xi Jinping. Crown Prince Mohammed also met the Chinese Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and government representatives. During this state visit, the parties agreed to strengthen stable commercial ties between the two countries. In addition, the parties expressed their willingness to cooperate within the framework of national strategic plans: the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative and Saudi Vision 2030. and studies in the maritime transport industry. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman agreed to allocate $10 billion to establish a refining and petrochemical complex in China. On the sidelines of the visit, the Crown Prince expressed Saudi readiness to teach Chinese in Saudi schools and universities. In 2020, Saudi imports from China amounted to $28.1 billion, while China is the main destination for Saudi exports (SAR 6.693 million). In April 2020, China and Saudi Arabia signed an SAR 995 million ($ 265.29 million) deal to fight COVID-19, providing 9 million nucleic acid tests for Saudi Arabia and opening laboratories in six main areas of the Kingdom. “The saying ‘a friend in need is a friend indeed’ has become the best footnote of the friendship between China and Saudi Arabia,” said Chinese ambassador Chen Weiqing to Arab News, reflecting on the bilateral relationship between Saudi Arabia and China. The ambassador stressed that relations between Saudi Arabia and China have strengthened since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was reflected in the fact that the two countries offered strong support during global crisis. At a critical moment, as the Chinese people sought to win the battle against COVID-19, the Saudi government expressed support and offered assistance to China. Thus, in accordance with King Salman's instructions, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center provided the Chinese government with much-needed medical supplies, which have become tremendous support for frontline Chinese healthcare workers and played a positive role in China's effective control over the virus. In turn, China sent a team of medical experts to the Kingdom to support and assist in the fight against COVID-19. The ambassador noted that Chinese experts believe Saudi Arabia has the experience and is well prepared to deal with COVID-19 and control the pandemic. Cooperation between the two countries has played a positive role in combating the pandemic and reducing the peak number of cases. China stands ready to maintain close cooperation with Saudi Arabia to prevent and overcome the pandemic.

Interview with the Ambassador
Chen Weiqing Embassy of the People's Republic of China ALEXANDER WOODMAN What are the progresses made in Sino-Saudi cooperation since the establishment of official diplomatic relations? There is an ancient Chinese proverb, "Distance cannot separate true friends who feel so close even when they are thousands of miles apart." Since the establishment of diplomatic relations 30 years ago, China-Saudi ties have continued to develop in a healthy way, with frequent high-level exchanges and expanded friendly cooperation in various fields. In 2016, during President Xi Jinping's visit to Saudi Arabia, the two sides established a comprehensive strategic partnership and founded the China-Saudi Arabia High-Level Joint Committee. China is Saudi Arabia's largest trading partner, while Saudi Arabia is China's largest trading partner in West Asia and Africa. The bilateral trade volume has increased over 150 times in the past 30 years, reaching $67.216 billion in 2020. Saudi Arabia and China have always respected the principles of mutual respect, equally beneficial cooperation, and development, which is vital for the two countries to build a friendship model in diplomacy. Looking ahead, China and Saudi Arabia will continue to move forward with the blueprint drawn by the two heads of state, jointly realize national development and national rejuvenation, and benefit the two nations. How has the establishment of the China-Saudi Arabia High-Level Joint Committee fostered strategic partnerships in areas other than diplomacy? The China-Saudi Arabia High-Level Joint Committee has held three meetings so far and has become an important mechanism for the two nations to promote communication and coordination and implement the important consensus between the two leaders, King Salman and President Xi Jinping. The Committee has made full use of its coordinating and leadership roles under the supervision of the two heads of states, contributing to deepening political trust and integrating development strategies between the two countries. Therefore, practical cooperation in economy, trade, humanities, and energy has continued to expand and progress quickly.
28
What factors make China Saudi Arabia's largest trading partner in West Asia, and vice versa? Recalling the past 30 years, we are glad to see that the bilateral economic and trade cooperation between China and Saudi Arabia has maintained a healthy development momentum, yielding fruitful results. First, the two countries both adhere to the concept of mutually beneficial cooperation, which is the prerequisite for China to become Saudi Arabia's largest trading partner and Saudi Arabia to become China's largest trading partner in West Asia. Second, the two nations' industries are highly complementary, offering economic and trade cooperation a broad prospect. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) development concept is in line with Saudi Vision 2030, which is also pivotal for promoting trade cooperation between the two countries. The Mecca Light Rail built by China Railway Construction became the first light rail in Saudi Arabia. What factors influence the successful operation of Chinese construction companies in the Kingdom? In Saudi Arabia, more than 100 Chinese enterprises are engaged in different businesses. When doing business there, Chinese enterprises always honor their commitments and bring their virtues of diligence and efficiency. They have excellently completed many large-scale projects, supported the economic development of Saudi Arabia and the practical cooperation between China and Saudi Arabia, and actively fulfilled their social responsibilities. These are the main reasons for Chinese enterprises’ success in Saudi Arabia. As mentioned, the Mecca Light Rail built by China Railway Construction is the first light rail railway in Saudi Arabia and has won wide praise from pilgrims with a record of zero accidents. Moreover, the Yanbu Aramco Sinopec Refining Company (YASREF) Ltd., a venture jointly funded by Saudi Aramco and China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec), is SinoDQ LIVING MAGAZINE MAY-JUNE 2021
pec's first overseas refining and chemical project and China's largest investment project in Saudi Arabia. In addition, the Jizan Economic City, which is built with many Chinese enterprises' participation, will become a new driving force for the economic development of the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia in the future. Please discuss the importance and role of wise leadership while confronting COVID-19 pandemic. In the face of the sudden outbreak of COVID-19, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was the first leader to call President Xi Jinping to support China. Moreover, at King Salman's initiative, the G20 held the G20 Extraordinary Virtual Leaders' Summit on COVID-19. President Xi Jinping attended the meeting and, along with King Salman, advocated for the international community to remain united in the fight against COVID-19. During the pandemic, President Xi held three telephone conversations with King Salman. Under King Salman Al Saud's directions, Saudi Arabia immediately sent much-needed medical supplies to China. The Chinese government, provinces, cities, and enterprises also provided medical supplies to Saudi Arabia and actively supported the Kingdom in improving its capability to detect viruses. Health experts from both countries exchanged experiences on COVID-19 prevention and control. The actions of China and Saudi Arabia have shown that the virus is our common enemy, and unity and cooperation is the most powerful weapon. The friendship between China and Saudi Arabia has reached new heights in anti-pandemic cooperation. How does the strengthening of Saudi-Chinese foreign policy affects the current status of cultural and people-to-people exchanges? What is the role of the Embassy? In recent years, relations between China and Saudi Arabia have become deeper and more robust, thanks to increasingly close people-to-people exchanges and activities. The Embassy of China has been serving as a bridge to promote cultural cooperation between the two countries. Since 2017, there have been several cultural exchanges that vivid demonstration of friendship. For example, the exhibition "Roads to Arabia: Archaeological Treasures of Saudi Arabia" organized by Saudi Arabia in China, the "Exhibition of Chinese Cultural Relics" organized by China in Saudi Arabia. In addition, the joint archaeological excavations unearthed relics pointing to the Maritime Silk Road in the port of Al Serrian. Last but not least the performance by the Chinese symphony orchestra and musicians at the World Heritage Site of Al-Ula. In 2020, following the successful conclusion of the G20 Summit in Riyadh, a concert dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Saudi Arabia was broadcast live simultaneously on television and in online media. Chinese musicians played Chinese and internationally renowned music, including Saudi music "The Most Beautiful Country," which the Saudi audience loved. I am convinced that people from the two countries will further strengthen their friendship

with culture as a bond to write a new story about cultural exchanges between China and Saudi Arabia. Similar to China, Saudi Arabia is well-known for its diverse culture. On a personal level, what makes Saudi Arabia a special place for you? Saudi Arabia is a country that perfectly combines tradition with modernity as the birthplace of Arab and Islamic culture. I arrived in Saudi Arabia at a very good time. I was fortunate enough to experience its dynamic development together with the people of Saudi Arabia and witness the grand vision for the future that they are building under the leadership of King Salman Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. I have visited many provinces in Saudi Arabia and experienced the local customs. What impressed me the most was the friendliness and hospitality of Saudis. How does the Diplomatic Quarter (DQ) promote the interaction between the Chinese embassy and other foreign missions to Saudi Arabia? The Diplomatic Quarter is a diversified community with embassies from different countries. At the same time, it is home to diplomats from all over the world in Riyadh. The Chinese embassy is dedicated to strengthening cooperation with the Diplomatic Quarter and all countries' missions to enrich cultural exchange. In 2019, we held a Chinese film festival in the Cultural Palace of the Diplomatic Quarter. My colleagues and I enjoy working and living in the Diplomatic Quarter and maintain harmonious working relations and personal friendships with the envoys and diplomats from all over the world. With this in mind, I want to thank the Royal Commission for Riyadh City for the warm and considerate help. What is your daily routine as the Ambassador of China to the KSA in the DQ? The amenities and facilities of the Diplomatic Quarter are constantly improving, making diplomats' work and life more comfortable and convenient. At the end of the working day, I often walk, go shopping or enjoy local delicacies. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Diplomatic Quarter hosted many cultural events in which my colleagues and I were actively involved. We all had a great time. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we adhered strictly to prevention measures in response to a call from the Saudi government. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to our reunion after the pandemic.

orn in 1952, Hammas’s family moved around to different cities from Tabuk in the north, then onto Abha, and Riyadh, before finally settling in Jeddah. His natural affinity for the arts was evident early on, and he credits his father for encouraging him and buying him coloring books and crayons from a young age. Hammas graduated from the Institute of Art Education in 1973 and then embarked on his career as an artist. He shared his love for art as a prepschool art teacher for 31 years and has also held several senior positions, including two presidencies in the Society of Culture and Arts in Jeddah and General Executive of the House of the Artists of Fine Art. Hammas has held an impressive 36 personal exhibitions within and outside the Kingdom. All artists are products of their environment, according to Hammas. The artist’s first home in the south of Saudi Arabia exuded nature and greenery, and colorful folk art. This was a stark contrast to the arid, dusty landscape of his next residence in Tabuk. In fact, Hammas’ first painting after moving to Tabuk featured a one-toned military tank. To this day however, it is the Asiri, or southern influences, that remain predominant in his artwork. Hammas describes his art as symbolic abstract, depicting the real word in abstract symbols. The Al Mansouria Foundation, a Saudi non-profit committed to culture and education,

credited him to be among the first painters to have pushed the limits of traditional and decorative painting and also to have embarked on an abstract quest to link colours and materials to his homeland. Although Hammas was supported by his family and also encouraged by many of his teachers, there were certainly times of disappointment. His first show, 48 years ago, was held in Zahrat Al Sharg, one of the most prestigious hotels in Riyadh at that time. The determined artist put his heart and soul into the exhibition and all of his artwork was on display. Despite his efforts, not one piece of his work sold, and the manager of the hotel even excused him from paying for his drink. “Persevere” is Hammas’s message to the younger generations. “Don’t give up or succumb to setbacks or criticism.” Hammas believes his country needs more art. “The Saudi culture and religion need not only more documentation, but elevation as well. Art can achieve this,” says Hammas. In the artist's time, it was difficult to find good materials, paint, and canvases in Saudi Arabia. Today, materials are easily sourced and everything from making, selling, and

buying art is easier. Thus, he tells young artists that they have no excuse not to continue their work. Hammas sold his first piece of artwork for 150 SAR. Recently, he purchased it back for hundreds of thousands of riyal. Hammas is actively locating and re-purchasing many pieces of his original artwork to display in his museum in Jeddah, a venue that will be free for the public. Hammas’ artwork is a representation of his country as he sees it. The materialization of his vision depicts Saudi Arabia and its culture to his fellow countrymen and the international community alike. Furthermore, his story and passion for the art inspires a younger generation of Saudi artists poised to make their own mark.

FEATURE What are the challenges you face as an artist, and how do you overcome them? The very first challenge when I was in high school was to find the time and the place to paint. Now that I have time, space, and peace of mind to focus on my painting, the real challenge is to go out of my comfort zone and risk trying new things. If you were to explain the importance of art in society, what would you say is its significance? Art is a global language, like music, it goes across borders and unites people. It communicates beauty, harmony, strength or power which are understandable by all cultures alike.

Even with a Masters degree in Economy under her belt, Maru always knew that painting was her real passion. Born in Barcelona, she was enthusiastic about art at an early age. She started with painting figurative themes with oil but is now painting abstract works in acrylic. Her first solo exhibition was in the headquarters of the United Nations in Vienna and recently, at the Naila Art Gallery in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She has lived in various parts of Europe such as Brussels, Milan, Vienna, and in 2016, she added Saudi Arabia to her list. Maru continues to pursue her love for painting in Riyadh with a group of international female artists called “Synergy.” Who are your influences when it comes to art? At the beginning, I was influenced by the impressionist and I worked with thick strokes and bold colors, now I like to experiment and try different modern techniques but color remains a mark that identifies my work. Living in Riyadh, the beauty of the Arab desert and culture has become a great source of inspiration, as well.

“Art is a conversation with yourself where you can paint your world as you love it and feel it from the inside.” Marina chose to pursue art academically in Russia - where they have rich traditions on art dating back from centuries ago - but she first discovered art as a family activity. She was taught how to draw along with her sister during their childhood days but has then built her career in oil painting using different techniques and tools; sometimes she would also experiment on other mediums such as silk painting, modeling with clay, and epoxy resin art. She started living in Riyadh in 2009 and has since exhibited her works locally and internationally with the group, “Synergy.”

Who are your influences when it comes to art? The first person who affected my life in art was my father. He talked me into making art. Without his help and influence, I would not reach anything now. While living in Saudi Arabia, I was always impressed with Saudi culture, especially their calligraphy. It was something that truly fascinated me and I would wish to incorporate something similar to my work, but I realized it was not so simple at all. What are the challenges you face as an artist, and how do you overcome them? Often, people ask me about my educational background. It is true that professional education is necessary for a successful career. It was not easy to find time for a full-value academic program in one of the Russian art institutions. Nevertheless, with the support of my family, I will graduate and I can proudly announce that “Yes, I am a professional artist with a full academic art education.”

“Art conveys a message, tells a story. It entices, inspires, motivates, and even honors.” Surrounded by a family full of creatives (painters, crafters, graphic designers), Leslie was destined to live in the art world. Drawing was her first love but then started to explore other mediums such as charcoal, pastels, watercolor, acrylic, and most recently is oil painting. She considers herself a self-taught artist with a focus on mixed media. She moved to Riyadh at a very young age and has considered the city as her home over the last 30 years. She has exhibited her work with The Women’s Skills Bureau in Naila Art Gallery, Mawhub Art Gallery, International Zervas Art Club and for an upcoming one, the Adham Art Center in Jeddah.

Who are your influences when it comes to art? I love realism and the ones I look up to would be the favorites: da Vinci, Raphael, Michaelangelo, then there’s Caravaggio, Bouguereau and art nouveau Alphonse Mucha. For Filipino artists, they would be Fernando Amorsolo, Ben Cab, and Vicente Manansala. What are the challenges you face as an artist, and how do you overcome them? Initially, living in Saudi Arabia and as an expat, it was hard for me to gain exposure and showcase my work. I’m very thankful that in recent years, Saudi has given opportunities for women, especially expat women, to take part in activities that show their potential. Another challenge I’ve faced as an artist is parting with our work when it’s sold. Commissions are different, but artwork that you’ve conceived, your idea, your design, especially when it becomes your favorite or if it has some sentimental value, it’s hard to let those go. We’ve put our heart, soul and time into those original pieces. I usually place a higher value on my favorite pieces.

If you were to explain the importance of art in society, what would you say is its significance? Art is everywhere and everything we see, hear, and touch. From architecture, to the clothes we wear, food, entertainment (music, TV, theater) even mother nature. It’s been around for ages as a form of communication since art is universal. It evokes various emotions. Art conveys a message, tells a story. It entices, inspires, motivates, and even honors. Without art, our world would be boring and lifeless.
I relate to them on a personal level as they never went to any art school like me to create the magnificent work they've done. Some of the names include Andreea Berinda, Chuck Black, Lena Danya and many more. What are the challenges you face as an artist, and how do you overcome them? As a realism artist, I am never satisfied with my piece of work. I love to capture details from real life and add it into my paintings but sometimes I fail because it can never be perfect. There is no such thing as perfect.

THE DOCTOR IS IN Your common questions on skin issues answered by Dr. Mohammed Almashali, Dermatology Consultant at the Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Medical Center Diplomatic Quarter.
What treatments do you offer to people with acne problems? Acne vulgaris is a multifactorial disorder. The clinical picture can vary significantly, from mild comedonal acne to severe systemic disease. Although all age groups may be affected by its many variants, the peak incidence is during adolescence. Early treatment of acne is essential for the prevention of lasting cosmetic disfigurement due to scarring. Acne lesions are divided into non-inflammatory and inflammatory groups based upon their clinical appearance. Non-inflammatory acne is characterized by open comedones (whiteheads) and closed comedones (blackheads) while inflammatory acne lesion can be seen as red papules, pustules, or large pus containing cyst. Treatment of acne depends on history and physical examination with laboratory test is required sometimes for further evaluation of the cause of acne in some patients. The treatment options include: *Treatment targeting non inflammatory lesions (whitehead & blackhead) include: ● Topical retinoids are the primary treatment modality, other options are Azelaic acid and Salicylic acid. ●C omedone extraction can also be done for fast results. *Treatment of inflammatory lesion include: ● Mild inflammatory acne can be treated by topical retinoid with topical antibiotics like benzoyl peroxide cream or clindamycin solution.
DQ LIVING MAGAZINE MAY-JUNE 2021
● Moderate to severe inflammatory acne is often treated with oral antibiotics like doxycycline, minocycline, or azithromycin as first line treatment. If there is no improvement, isotretinoin might be the best option. ● Other treatment modality depends on the cause of acne like hormonal treatment might be the best choice for a patient with acne secondary to hormonal irregularities. ● Local steroid injection into an inflamed cyst can give a fast relief of the pain and discomfort.

NEW HEAD OF MISSION
Patrick Simonnet
EU Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman ALEXANDER WOODMAN
Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman. How does this title help you accomplish the vision, values, and strategy of the EU and support regional development? Above all, the value of this title lies in recognition of the responsibility that the job entails, rather than the virtue of its position in the diplomatic or political hierarchy. Being the Head of the EU Delegation accredited to multiple countries means impartially and accurately representing the Union and its 27 member states through their common views, visions, and policies. As you know, the EU has a common internal market, a common visa policy (Schengen area), a common currency managed by a Central Bank, a common trade policy, a common foreign policy and many other forms of integration. The relations between the EU and KSA are therefore wide-ranging: political and diplomatic relations, cooperation on security, trade and economy, foreign investment, cultural exchanges, etc. Promoting mutual understanding between the people of the two regions is also among the delegation’s highest priorities. You have been appointed as EU Ambassador to the Kingdom during the unprecedented times of COVID-19. What are your reflections on the initiatives of the Kingdom to combat the spread of the virus and protect the residents and guests? The lockdown in the country was quite short-lived, and I was lucky enough to arrive after it had been lifted. The country had done a great job at handling the contamination
38
rates, keeping the infection in check, and providing medical care for its residents. The organized approach to the management of the virus explains the absence of a second wave in the Kingdom, as opposed to many European countries, which have fallen into a vicious resurgence of the virus. As the host of the G20 Summit, Saudi Arabia has also taken on a leading role in providing an example for the other participating countries and assisting them with organizational and structural ideas for effective governance during the pandemic. It was extremely thoughtful of the leadership to send care packages to support the economy and hinder a possible recession. Using the chairing position, Saudi Arabia also tried to ensure that the global attention is focused on post-pandemic recovery. Now there is good cooperation between EU and Saudi Arabia on vaccines as many of those used for the current vaccination campaign in KSA are imported from the EU. Solidarity is important, and as we say, the battle against COVID-19 can only be won if we all work together. On the subject of the future. What is the EU vision on the collaboration with Saudi Arabia? Where do you see the strengths of the Kingdom, other than oil and energy? Dismissing oil and energy as well-established cooperation points in a relationship with Saudi Arabia is an understandable sentiment. Yet, the dominance of the Kingdom in this market and its ability to offer mutually beneficial deals to their diplomatic partners or economic trade-dealers are un-

precedented. Given the admirable commitment to sustainability, Saudi Arabia has taken on the utilization of green energy, which is environmentally conscious and a great way to diversify its economic portfolio. In an attempt to combat climate change at a larger scale, the Kingdom is planning to become the largest hydrogen supplier in the world, which is of great interest to us, as we will need great quantities of hydrogen for the Green Transition in Europe. The ability to grow an economy, securing its stability by diversifying revenue streams and investment opportunities, makes Saudi Arabia a great economic partner. Vision 2030 is one of the largest documented development projects, which has a definitive framework for a productive economic outcome. Besides relying on green energy, Saudi Arabia has also tapped into other prospective branches of development. One of the most promising fields is tourism, and the Saudi wonders are soon going to become a top destination for European tourists. The versatility practiced by the leadership of the Kingdom is most definitely an asset. The EU mission is not located in the Diplomatic Quarter, an area housing most of the foreign missions to the Kingdom. Nevertheless, in your opinion, how does this location enhance multilateral collaboration? The EU delegation is in Al Mathaar District and my residence is in the DQ, which means that I have one foot there and one foot outside. It is hard not to love the DQ, as it is an epicenter of culture and diversity. The environment is
DQ LIVING MAGAZINE MAY-JUNE 2021
simply superb. A portion of our members is seated outside of the DQ. However, thanks to the DQ authority, we will soon start building new premises in the DQ and most of my staff should be able to move there at some point. What is the daily routine of the EU Ambassador in the DQ? Any favorite places to recommend? I have a dog, and my day usually starts with my wife and I taking the dog on an early morning walk, while our children still sleep. The DQ is very pet-friendly! Then, we usually have coffee in one of the coffee places in Oud or Al Kindi Square. Afterward, the professional part of my day begins when I go to work and have meetings, discussions, visits, etc. In the evening, my family and I usually try to have dinner together. Although, it is not unusual to find us biking outside together. Amazingly, the DQ is still developing, so every time there is a billboard with the promise of new construction, it is very exciting! On May 9, to celebrate Europe Day in KSA, DQ authority placed flags and Europe Day board at the front gate. Describe Saudi Arabia in one sentence. Saudi Arabia is a great country with amazing people, wonderful hospitality, and delicious cuisine, but driving is as reckless as in my hometown Paris.

The Beauty of the Arabic Language SEHAM ALMUBARAK Founder of Takleem
Robert Alan said “Cultural differences should not separate us from each other, but rather cultural diversity brings a collective strength that can benefit all of humanity.” Adding a new way of communication to your life is a part of growth, and that’s why at Takleem, we focus on taking you on an intellectual journey. In this article, you will learn more about the Arabic language's origin and its history that will encourage you to the most beneficial exposure.
The language definition – what are the roots? For many years, historians determined the origin of language as “the sound” that we hear with our ears and then proceed to speak in order to express our thoughts and feelings. However, language is not only the sound and speech, but rather, it is also our thinking, along with our rationale and our mind. It is what distinguishes human from animal. Therefore, languages, in general, express the great capabilities of humans and how we communicate and interact with each other, resulting in the creation of an original culture. For this reason, language is firmly identified with the way of life, and we cannot separate them. The primary tool to unlock your understanding of a culture is to become familiar with its language. How is the origin of the Arabic language associated with the Islamic religion? Truth be told, historians have not yet been able to completely comprehend the origin of the Arabic language. Yet,
40
some have said that it is the language of Adam in Heaven, where Allah quoted in the Qur’an: “Allah taught Adam the names - all of them in the language”. Before the Islamic religion, the Arabic language was historically associated to the sixth century Quraysh tribe (individuals who were living in Makkah), as they used to speak it. Their accent was distinguished because of its correctness, beauty, and the absence of errors compared to other Arab people's dialects. In the seventh century, Allah sent the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad - Peace be upon him. The Arabic culture and language – how did it all start? As the Quraysh was recognized by their grasp of the Arabic language, their proficiency and dominant abilities in it were advanced. As such, they gave the Arabic language esteemed importance and held a linguistic conference every year called “Souk Okaz”, at a place between Makkah and Taif. Here, poets and preachers were gathered and competed amongst each other, and a judgment board of
DQ LIVING MAGAZINE MAY-JUNE 2021
FEATURE trustees was appointed to choose the winners. As challenging as it may appear, the Prophet Muhammad was sent to oppose them with this language, with the skill that they were most proficient in. Once he started voicing out the language of the Quran, some members claimed that he was a magician, or that He was just a poet, because the language he spoke was beyond their genius. From that moment, the Qur’an became the miracle of the Prophet Muhammad. And this miracle is not seen with the eyes, but rather came to challenge the mind through listening! Thus, language is what distinguishes a human by his mind, and the first sense by which a person can learn any language, is through listening. In sum, the Arabic language originated from the Quraysh and was used as a challenge and a miracle of the Prophet Muhammad. After that, Arabic became the official language of Muslims, and all of the Islamic texts were written in it, along with all of the grammatical Arabic language rules taken from the Holy Qur’an as it is fully correct, complete, and error free. Then, Arabic became the language of Islamic civilization and Arab culture, reflecting Arabic literature and art as well. How did Arabic letters develop? It may come as a surprise that the Arabic letters did not contain dots and symbols like “Fathah,” “Kasrah,” and “Thammah”, as the present letters do. They had to be adjusted due to the wide spreading of Islam during the seventh century, where a great deal of people entered the religion of Islam. Each of these people began to read the Qur’an with different pronunciations, resulting in misinterpretations in the readers’ minds. This triggered a fear in Prophet Muhammad’s companions, that it would become a widespread habit for people to understand the meaning of the text incorrectly. Hence, they formulated a solution for this conflict, to preserve the Qur’an from changes. Why were dots added to the Arabic letters? Dots were placed on the letters to differentiate between similar letters such as “Ba”, “Ta” and “Ya”, and the symbols drawn on the letters were invented to help to pronounce the word in a correct manner as it is in the Qur’an. How did dialects form? The Arabic language spread widely after Islam – because it was the language of literature, science, and culture, it encouraged non-Muslims to learn Arabic to translate many Arabic sciences into other dialects. The mixing between Arabs with other people such as Persians, Romans, Indians, and so on, resulted in the mixing of new words from other languages into the Arabic language. Some Arabs began to make “mistakes” in pronunciation. We call the mistake of language in Arabic, “laHn”, although is it not a mistake because it is understood, yet it is not stated in the Quran. Therefore, Arabs accepted the changes that occurred in
DQ LIVING MAGAZINE MAY-JUNE 2021
informal conversations and different dialects were created based on country and region. As a matter of fact, Saudis speak more than one dialect, but in general, there is little difference. The differences comprise of only a few words. Classifications of the Arabic language ▪ Classical Arabic is the language which the Qur’an was revealed in, and is flawless, complete, and correct. The Arabs used it in the past in poetry and through the books of Arabic literature, the Sunnah, and books of science. ▪ Official Arabic is used in the Arab world in education, media and conferences. ▪ Colloquial Arabic is spoken by Arabs with different dialects according to their country and city. The richness of the Arabic language Arabic is a language that may have its own unique rules, pronunciation, and grammar – therefore, special words like: " ” (which means bird, plane, pilot, airport, fly) have the same letters, but they have extra or missing letters. However, if you look at these names in the English language, all of the grammar is completely different. How Arabic influences other languages around the world Throughout centuries, many languages have borrowed directly from the Arabic vocabulary or through other languages influenced by the Arabic dialect, giving the Arabic expressions an original and authentic credit. Knowing the history of Arabic, culture, and language enables you to understand the roots of any other languages of the world. It is one of the strongest pillars of writing and reading. The Arabic language is one of the most fascinating and widely spoken languages in the world. If you are in Saudi Arabia, it’s best to learn the language as it not only helps you to communicate with other people, but it is also a way to immerse in the culture of the Kingdom. If you want to discover its beauty and dive into its depths, let Takleem — a platform for Arabic language learning for non-native speakers, take you on an unforgettable learning journey that will help you achieve your Arabic learning goals.

Like when music mixes with words to make a song, or to go along with movements to make a dance. Music is also considered as the greatest communication in the world. Even when we have different languages and we can’t understand each other, we all know good music when we hear it and chances are, we bond over it. The Hijaz region in Saudi Arabia is considered as the birthplace of Arabic music, where poetry were presented by singing. A VISIT TO THE PAST JANELLE VALES-YASAY
They say that a visit to a museum is a search for beauty, truth, and meaning in our lives. It is recommended to go to museums as often as we can. Good thing, Saudi Arabia has a lot of museums where time is transformed into space. One of them is Al-Shareef Museum in the city of roses, Taif.
R
iyadh is known for its National Museum of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom’s biggest museum that houses various exhibits and runs interactive tours. Outside the capital city, there are some private museums opened to the public that are also worth checking out. A few of them can be found in Taif, a city in Saudi Arabia’s west coast. Taif boasts of a long, impressive history that played a significant role in the pre-Islamic era. It was known to be a crossroad of traders and pilgrims in the Hejaz region. While the nice weather and the rose season are some of the main attractions of the city, its museums that show how far back Saudi’s history goes are also national treasures that can’t be missed. The Al Shareef Museum is a private museum that has a lot of artifacts, memorabilia, and crafts collected by owner Al-Sharif Ali Bin Malbas for over 30 years. He traveled across Saudi Arabia to search for artifacts that are valuable to Saudi Arabia’s history and culture and displayed them in one place, thus the Al Shareef Museum was created in 2005 in the Umm Al-Sebaa neighborhood.

The artifacts in the museum are displayed according to their type and function in wide sections making it quite an easy and comfortable visit. The museum features vintage household wares, jewelries, clothes, toys, cameras, weapons, agricultural and medical tools, and more. The museum is filled with interesting bits and pieces that show the lives and times of desert dwellers. The most notable section is the replica of a small souk (historical market) that contains stalls and shops of artisans in the old days. Each shop contains the tools, machines, and materials used by the crafter (carpenters, barbers, goldsmiths, photographers, store owners, weavers, and more). Being in the middle of the “souk” feels like being back in the past, being in the midst of a bustling marketplace in ancient Arabia. Another noteworthy area features a selection of vintage cars including a Cadillac, Volkswagen and a few iconic red Ford trucks. While museums nowadays are seen as mere places where old objects go to enjoy their final years, Al Shareef Museum is quite a walk in memory lane. It’s not just simply a place for things but it is the perfect place to see Saudi Arabia’s culture and heritage through things. The present generation and the future ones will learn from it and will instill a sense of community, a love for learning, and a feeling of gratitude for a past that made their present possible.

The Banquet of Hoshena is an epitome of this concept that goes beyond the traditional constructs of culinary arts. It was inaugurated at the Terrace Grill of Riyadh Marriott Hotel last month and diners will be welcomed into a one-of-a-kind feat that will evoke their curiosity, emotions, and palates. With the use of 3D visual techniques and experiential props, the story will begin with the Queen of Hoshena telling the guests about their once-luscious Kingdom and how banishing bad emotions have resulted into their now barren land. The mystical journey into restoring Hoshena’s glory takes place as each menu course is served and with the diners participating in the process (such as whispering your fears into a magic pouch and lighting a candle with a touch of your finger).

The show is projected for two hours over a seven-course meal. They will start with a welcome drink and levitating hors d’oeuvres, followed by a Shrimp Salad in green mango and avocado coulis for an appetizer. The Cream of Wild Mushroom Soup is as enjoyable as the dramatics it came with while the Pan-Seared Salmon in red pepper coulis arrived with a flaming plate - despite not being a spicy dish at all. An interactive beverage is then served with a dropper and some dry ice that is meant to cleanse the palate followed by the Trio of Meat Medallions which included a seared dutch veal fillet, a roasted lamb chop, and a grilled angus beef fillet - quite the generous serving for a second main course. A lively fireworks display erupts in our table as Hoshena regains its exuberant Kingdom and the magical creatures reappear and a dessert of Chocolate Parfait in Almond Biscuits concludes the festivities. Overall, it was an entertaining evening that had us glued to the story and what to expect next. A light story break in between chapters allows for conversation between diners but know that the entire dinner is experienced only under the lights of the show’s projector; the rest of the restaurant remains dark as the spotlight is only on the digital presentation over the plates, tables and props. COFFEE IN THE CITY BY THE PINK TARHA Janelle Vales-Yasay and Reina TejanoBerina are the power duo behind the successful multi-awarded blog “The Pink Tarha”, an online lifestyle guide in Saudi Arabia. They started their blog in 2009 and since then have inspired many people by showcasing the fun and interesting side of living in KSA. What started out as a hobby for the girls has gained so much positive attention and appreciation in the process winning them the Saudi Excellence in Tourism Award.
Every morning, we come to a common ‘ground’: coffee. Coffee is what most people consider as the “intellectual drink” because of its stimulating effects and health benefits. Saudi Arabia has many cafes and coffee shops that sell premium and specialty coffees. If you have “procaffeination syndrome”, the tendency to not start anything without having a cup of coffee, then this list is for you!
DR. CAFE (@drcafeksa) Dr. Cafe is one of the most popular coffee brands in Saudi Arabia. Living by their rule to be excellent in everything they do, Dr. Cafe offers premium specialty coffee and food items like pas-

tries and cakes. Their most recent venture is V12, a series of in-depth manual and advanced brew methods like Chemex, Syphon, and French Press. Must-Try: Iced Shaken Double Espresso, Spanish Latte, Croissant DRAFT CAFE (@draftcafe) Draft started as a concept store in Riyadh that eventually grew into a specialty coffee shop. The cafe is known for being a venue for students to study and for artists to share their talent and craft. Nowadays, Draft is a favorite hangout place of millennials. Must-Try: Iced Spanish Latte, Green Tea Matcha, Cheesecakes
STARBUCKS RESERVE (@starbucksmiddleeast) Who doesn’t know Starbucks? It’s only the most popular coffee shop in the world. It has a lot of branches scattered all over the Kingdom but if you want a nicer, brighter atmosphere for a quick meeting with the team, Starbucks Reserve in The Boulevard is perfect. It’s one of the largest in the MENA region with its combo of the traditional coffee bar and the Reserve Bar which introduces deeper coffee knowledge to customers. Must-Try: Reserve Americano, Espresso, Turkey and Cheese Croissant
JOLT (@jolt.sa) Jolt has taken Riyadh by surprise (true to its name huh). When their first branch opened, people lined up for their dark yet sophisticated interiors. In contrast, their marbled lattes came in quite interesting flavors and colors: Red Velvet, Spice, Pistachio, Rose, Chocolate and more! People can’t get enough of them! Must-Try: Hot Jolt Latte, Iced Pistachio Latte, Saffron Milk Cake
ILLY CAFFE (@illyksa) The company Illy has been synonymous with velvety coffee and high quality coffee machines which are featured and used by other cafes in the world. Recently, Illy opened a huge coffee shop in Takhasussi that looked like a mirage resplendent with colors. Imagine drinking coffee surrounded with such vibrant colors! Illy Caffe has branches in major cities in Saudi Arabia. Must-Try: Espresso Illy, Cappuccino Freddo, Mushroom Soup
Whether you just want a cup before going to work or as a companion to your breakfast or as a cozy meeting place with your colleagues, you will find a lot of choices when it comes to coffee shops in Saudi Arabia.

Tell us about yourself. I am a Lebanese/American who moved to Riyadh in March of this year from the United States. I've been setting up a homebased business with my sister called "cheese'n'dip". We cater mostly to DQ residents, preparing cheese trays and many others. How would family and friends describe you? They would describe me as an extroverted introvert. My friends and family would say I'm an outgoing person who loves a night out with friends as much as she loves a night in watching Netflix on the couch. Who or what have been the strongest influences in your life? I worked with refugees from different backgrounds for 10 years in Istanbul, Turkey. I would say that every one of them has affected my life throughout those years and has left an impression on the person I am today. What brought you to Riyadh? I came here to be with my sister and her family. What led you to your career and how has Saudi Arabia helped you in your career goals? I have a background in Psychology and was always interested in humanitarian work. That’s what led me to my career path.
However here in Riyadh, I am doing something completely different which is a nice change, especially after the pandemic and after having to stay indoors for so long. What are you most proud of accomplishing so far? All the work I have done with refugees as well as the small business that my sister and I have started recently. What are your thoughts and insights on being a resident of Saudi Arabia? Considering that it is the first time I have ever been to Saudi Arabia, I can see a lot of potential for Riyadh in the future. There is a huge expat community, especially here in the DQ, which is great. Where are your favorite places to visit in Riyadh? I love to visit the old souks as well as the desert. What were your first impressions of the DQ? I’ve only been here for 2 months. I can see that it’s a small, tight knit community that sticks together. I love how everyone knows everyone. What do you like most about the DQ? What I like most about the DQ is the variety of people. It's a melting pot of nationalities. It's also very safe and you have everything you need at the tip of your fingers. What is something you wish the DQ had, but currently doesn’t? Concept stores and more small specialty boutiques. Since there are so many nationalities here, it would be nice to see an array of products/stores that reflect that. Any tips/recommendations/advice for your DQ neighbors? Keep checking DQ Living for everything that’s going on inside the DQ. What are you looking forward to in the coming season? I look forward to growing our home-based business so stay tuned for what's coming. Check out our Instagram page @cheese.n.dip.dq or send us a message via WhatsApp at 0550012193 to be updated.

The Fabiana Filippi Spring-Summer 2021 advertising campaign celebrates the beauty of our cultural heritage. In the images, photographed by the creative duo Greg Harris and Maria Gordillo, top model Birgit Kos explores and meanders amid picturesque ancient Roman ruins— the Grotte di Catullo archaeological site—on the shore of Lake Garda. The shots highlight the natural elegance of the entire collection, imbuing it with the timeless enchantment of the location. At this moment in time, when the world is unable to be in direct contact with culture, without access to museums, galleries and works of art, the new Fabiana Filippi campaign is also an invitation to nurture our sense of beauty, the founding heritage of Italy and a value that the brand has always believed in.
