Another year is closing behind us and in this issue of DQ Living, we highlight the achievements of Saudi Arabia. From distinctive government initiatives to high economic gains to many entertainment events and to the historic win of Saudi Arabia over Argentina in the World Cup, there’s truly a lot to be proud of. That also includes the notable feats of Saudi Arabia that made history in the Guinness World Records.

Meanwhile, the Wives of the Heads of Mission reflect on the past year as they share their experiences and aspirations for the future. Our fitness contributor, Mohammad Ameenudin aims to inspire us to “cross more lines” as he tells his stories of running marathons.

You can also read about the abundant events during this time from the inauguration of the third edition of the Riyadh Season, the MDL Beast Soundstorm and Noor Riyadh. In the DQ, the Catwalk and Beyond Pink were held to support environmental and breast cancer causes, respectively.

Time sure flies when you’re having fun and this year certainly flew by for us here at DQ Living. Like Saudi Arabia, DQ Living has hit many goals this year and we have our team, our partners and collaborators, and you, our readers, to thank for it.

SAUDI MILESTONES OF 2022

With their achievements this year, Saudi Arabia is well on its way to realizing their vision of having a vibrant society and a thriving economy.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has achieved greatness in the past decade. Led by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and the Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, Vision 2030 was created with the aim of anointing the Kingdom as a top tier country of the future.

Here are the notable milestones that Saudi Arabia has achieved this year:

GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

• The Ministry of Health worked towards eradicating COVID-19 by campaigning strongly to deliver booster shots. This turned out to be a huge success enabling society to reach pre-COVID lifestyle.

• The government has prioritized the training of Saudi youth in all professions. Three sectors had been included for complete Saudization-customs clearance, driving schools and engineering technical professions.

•The Jeddah Central Project was announced to revamp and improve the city of Jeddah. A master plan was unveiled and has been successfully executed to turn the pearl of the Red Sea into a modern-day urban complex. A budget of 75 million Saudi Arabian riyals has been allocated for this massive project.

• A royal decree was passed by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, announcing the commemoration of February 22 every year as “Founding Day”. The “Founding Day” celebrates the formation of the first Saudi state under the reign of Imam Mohammed Bin Saud in 1139H (corresponding to February 1727). The Day has been declared a national holiday and the roads and malls were a beautiful sight to behold with men, women, kids walking around in the national costumes of their respective provinces.

• "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's overall merchandise exports increased by 83.4% in May 2022 compared to May 2021" General Authority of Statistics

• The Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is currently making waves in East Asia not only for his impeccable style and charisma but also for his role in strengthening ties with our neighbors in that part of the world. Saudi Arabia has signed MoUs with Indonesia, South Korea, and has renewed diplomatic ties with Thailand

• Saudi Aramco is making its biggest ever investment of $7 billion in petrochemical industry in South Korea.

• March was a month of full-blown entertainment as the first Riyadh Marathon was organized by the SFA, supported by the Ministry of Sports and Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee.

• The Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix returned after a successful debut in December 2021. The Jeddah Corniche Circuit is the fastest street circuit in the world. Lewis Hamilton won the race. The race events of the day were celebrated by music concerts at night.

• Saudi Arabia won its bid to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games at Trojena in NEOM.

• The Saudi Games was the largest national sports event to be organized in the history of the country. It took place from October 27 to November 7. A footfall of about 6000 athletes participated with panache supported by an able administrative and technical staff.

• The Saudi Green Falcons, the Kingdom’s national soccer team, won against heavy-favored Argentina on their first match at the FIFA World Cup 2022.

SPORTS CHAMPIONS THROUGH 2022

• The Jameel Rally was organized by the Abdul Lateef Jameel Foundation specifically for women, in line with Vision 2030’s program to support women empowerment.

• Female workforce participation grew by 33.6% in the first quarter of 2022 from 20.5 % at the same time period in 2019. Employment rates and female entrepreneurs are at their zenith right now.

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, SECURITY, AND THE FUTURE

• The first edition of LEAP Tech Conference was organized in Riyadh from February 1-3. LEAP allowed retailers to display their high-technology products to tech enthusiasts who travelled from around the world to display as well as learn about cutting edge developments in the field of education, AI, Biotechnology, and more.

• A 4-day World Defense Show was also organized in March under the aegis of King Salman. It’ll be organized every 2 years and aims to bolster defense and security through air, sea, land, and space.

• The creation of The Line, a green, zero-carbon futuristic city in NEOM was announced by the Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman on July 25. The Line is a sustainable city that will be no longer than 170 km and will require 20 minutes to cover the entire stretch. It aims to house 1.5 million residents by 2030. It is a $1 trillion project.

• February 21 saw the winning debut of Saudi Arabia’s Women National Team in football.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT AND BIG WINS

• BlackHat, the worlds’ largest tech event was organized in Riyadh making it a first in the MENA region. Ethical hackers from around the world participated in the 3-day conference.

HAJJ AND UMRAH 2022

• Saudi Arabia dropped most of its COVID restrictions including social distancing in the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. These restrictions had been in place since 2020.

• Hajj 2022 was declared a grand success by the Saudi government with no cases of COVID-19 and no accidents reported amongst the pilgrims. It was after a period of two years that foreign pilgrims were invited to the sacred city of Makkah for the annual pilgrimage. The Saudi General Authority for Statistics announced that the total number of pilgrims in the current Hajj season reached 899,353, including 779,919 foreign pilgrims and 119,434 domestic pilgrims.

SAUDI SEASONS, ENTERTAINMENT AND TOURISM

• Jeddah Season 2022 kicked off on May 2 and lasted until June 30. After a 2-year hiatus due to COVID restrictions, myriad events were held across the city with the slogan, “Our Lovely Days”. It was peppered with concerts, K-pop and anime conferences, pop-up restaurants, cafes and more. The Jeddah Corniche became a focal point for fireworks and festivities.

• AlUla’s is being touted as the cultural and music capital of KSA. This year started with Azimuth, a music event that hosted international singers as well as Saudi and other famous Arab DJs. The AlUla Wellness event was organized with a backdrop of sand and under the blue sky with numerous activities for the guests attending; it marked the return of the Five Senses Sanctuary. The

year at AlUla will end with the Ancient Kingdoms Festival and the latest season of Winter at Tantora. The Winter at Tantora is the region’s largest and longest running arts and music festival. A treat for music and culture lovers, it will feature cultural symposiums, gastronomy treats, and international singers and celebrities.

• Riyadh Season 2022, this year boasts of new zones including Boulevard World which will include the world’s largest artificial lake with submarines and fancy restaurants. The Riyadh Zoo has been revamped to accommodate more animals and entertainment zones within. The Groves is back in the Diplomatic Quarter with their second season of fine dining, fun, and FIFA. The slogan is “Beyond Imagination” and it promises just that. The Diriyah Season will kickstart in December with a range of activities planned.

Saudi Arabia is becoming an economic powerhouse armed with the best in education, entertainment, sports, and technology. The future is the Kingdom’s to cherish and behold. Wishing the Kingdom the best for 2023!

With the world as its audience, Saudi Arabia continues to impress globally through unceasing developments and tremendous accomplishments all over the country.

Huge amount of efforts to enhance entertainment and tourism over the past years are embellished with numerous historic records which paved the way for the Kingdom to achieve various titles and recognitions from the Guinness World Records.

Here are some of the world records set by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for 2022:

Most Remote-operated Drones Launching Fireworks Simultaneously (Riyadh Season 2022 Opening Ceremony)

The exhilarating opening ceremony of Riyadh Season 2022 recorded the most remote-operated multi rotors/drones launching fireworks simultaneously on October 21, 2022.

As the momentous occasion took place, a total of 548 drones lit up the calm evening skies of Riyadh and formed images showing the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi flag, and Riyadh Season’s slogan “Beyond Imagination.”

Largest Pop-Up Outlet Center (Outlet 2022 Shopping Festival)

The biggest shopping festival catering to the shopaholics of Riyadh achieved the largest pop-up outlet center which opened on October 1, 2022.

Hundreds of discounted local and international brands for fashion, travel, gadgets, and more gathered several Riyadh shoppers in the 146,624m² lot purely dedicated to non-stop shopping which continued for two weeks.

Largest Special Stamp (Saudi Post Special Riyadh Season Stamp)

In commemoration of the second Riyadh Season, Saudi Post unveiled a 5.95m² special stamp which stamped its way to be the largest special stamp in the Guinness World Records.

The Saudi Post special stamp design features the Riyadh Season logo, a hot air balloon, fireworks, and the Winter Wonderland. It broke the record set by Disney in 2019 which measures 4.11m².

Most Simultaneous Pepper's Ghost Illusions of a Person (Mohammed Abdu Concert)

Local concert goers were granted a visual treat through Mohammed Abdu’s concert during the second Riyadh Season in January 14, 2022 where five holographic images of the Saudi singer were shown on stage achieving the most simultaneous pepper's ghost illusions of a person.

Mohammed Abdu then physically appeared on stage for a live performance in the event entitled "The Night of Al Maazeem."

World Records of Riyadh's BLVD WORLD Riyadh Season bagged several Guinness World Records for its largest LED light ball with a dimeter of 35m, largest artifical lake with an area of 12.19 hectares, largest metal sculpture of a fictional character (Grendizer at 33.7m), and the tallest portable rollercoaster, the Skyloop at 46m. Nearby, the largest music production studio, Merwas, is located at the BLVD RUH CITY.

Every achievement gained by Saudi Arabia is a celebration and an encouragement to develop more activities that will help boost the entertainment and tourism sector of the country in line with Saudi Vision 2030.

Through earning and breaking world titles, Saudi Arabia continues to break boundaries and move forward to create new aspirations and triumphs.

SAUDI ARABIA'S FUN RECORD-BREAKING FEATS

The Makkah Clock Royal Tower stands 601m high making it the tallest clock tower in the world which also has the largest clock face measuring 43m in diameter.

The largest LEGO brick build of a Formula 1 built using over 500,000 bricks measuring 5.73m x 2.32m x 1.15m and was achieved by the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation.

The Saudi Arabia Pavilion in Expo 2020 brought home three world titles such as largest interactive lighting display which consisted of 7,798 lights, the longest interactive water feature, and the largest LED mirror screen display of 32m.

The Jeddah Superdome is the largest freestanding dome measuring 210.107m in diameter.

The largest Hot Air Balloon Glow Show took place in AlUla in association with the Saudi Arabian Hot Air Balloon Federation and had a total of 142 hot air balloons.

The Avalanche Fun Slide of Riyadh Boulevard City holds the record of having the most lanes on a fun slide with a total of 24 lanes and the tallest fun slide in the world measuring 22.136m.

The Highway 10 is a 240-km stretch of freeway connecting Highway 75 of Haradh area to Highway 95 of AlBatha in the east of Saudi Arabia with no bends left or right making it the world's longest straight road.

The largest billboard in the world is at the King Khaled International Airport measuring 250m long x 12m tall.

The AlMasaa Café in Riyadh is the largest coffee shop in world which has 1,050 seats.

Craving for burger? I’m Hungry, a restaurant in Jeddah, will not run out of space for you with its area of 2,860 sqm (equivalent to 11 tennis courts!) awarded the largest burger restaurant in the world.

What will be your reflection on Saudi-Spanish diplomatic ties over a decade?

Saudi Arabia and Spain have had strong and reliable ties since historical times. Evidence of this statement can be found in architecture, monumental sites, in Spanish language, geography, and even music. According to various scholars, some of the roots of flamenco can be traced back to the music of Al-Andalus. For centuries Al-Andalus, presently Andalusia, was one of the regions of the western world with the highest intellectual, artistic and scientific levels. In the 10th and 11th centuries, Cordoba became one of the most important cities in Europe, with the contribution of eminent Arab scholars.

In the 1950s and 1970s, when Spain was an isolated country, the two countries maintained bilateral ties, and Spain always reckoned with Saudi Arabia. The relations between the two countries transcend the past, as in more recent times, these solid foundations have been reinforced by the fraternal relationship uniting our respective Royal Houses, not to mention the growth of business cooperation and the major flow of tourists. In the 21st century, 2010 can be

marked as the beginning of a new period of multifaceted cooperation between the two countries, including economic, trade, political, and cultural initiatives.

In the economic sphere, this momentum was boosted by projects such as the construction of the Al Haramain Mecca-Medina High-Speed Train, the Riyadh Metro, and the manufacture of five corvettes for the Saudi Royal Navy. Without forgetting the important presence of strong Spanish companies like Typsa, Idom, Indra, FCC and Aqualia and others. With this solid foundation and infrastructure already in place, Spanish companies are now looking to use the resources available in the Kingdom and bring their know-how to move into new areas of cooperation. In this sense, we are happy for the recent MoU signed between the Ministry of Defense of Saudi Arabia and Navantia to build five new ships for the Royal Saudi Navy.

What was the influence of the Saudi-Spanish Joint Committee on bilateral trade since 2007?

The establishment of the Saudi-Spanish Joint Committee was another important milestone for the two countries.

Since its inception in 2007, the Committee has held three meetings in 2014, 2018, and 2022. This year, as part of the third meeting, a Saudi delegation visited Spain with the participation of more than 50 organizations from the public and private sector of Saudi Arabia.

Representatives from both countries explored ways to deepen economic cooperation in energy, water, technology, tourism, education, infrastructure, real estate, aviation, agriculture, and the environment. This initiative has built confidence in developing new opportunities for cooperation and continuous evaluation of what has been done and where more improvements can be made. In addition, we count on the recently reformed Saudi-Spanish Business Council to intensify business cooperation. This will give entrepreneurs and businesses more space and investment opportunities in the two countries. While the project is underway, one thing is clear and very important. The council will have two presidents from Spain and Saudi Arabia as companies that want to invest in either country cannot always easily find information on how to start their journey. The two countries' participation will allow entrepreneurs to make more informed decisions and develop business cooperation in the right direction.

Spain is one of the key international partners of Vision 2030. Please discuss some current partnerships that will contribute to Saudi transformation. Spain is following with great interest the ambitious Vision 2030 modernization program. We want to support Saudi Arabia in developing a project that brings together the best talents of Saudi society and promises to boost the economy significantly, strengthening its leadership in the region and its visibility on the international stage. We are interested in bringing our

experience and knowledge to this transformation and becoming a part of megaprojects. For example, being one of the leaders in the tourism industry, Spain can offer a number of ideas and projects to develop the tourism industry in Saudi Arabia. At the same time, our involvement in infrastructure and engineering in Saudi Arabia remains intact.

What makes Saudi Arabia an attractive tourism destination for Spaniards?

First and foremost, Spaniards should come to Saudi Arabia because it is very original, authentic culture and different from what people used to see when traveling. While many parts of the world, such as the Caribbean and old Europe, are very well advertised, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf retain their authenticity and uniqueness, attracting without excessive or commercial advertising. People always look for something new and unknown. Saudi Arabia, which has become more open to the global community, maybe an exceptional place on this list. Saudi Arabia is a hub, where a friendly and genuine nation preserves ancient civilizations and layers of a thousand-year history.

What will be your remarks on the concept of the Diplomatic Quarter?

It is a privilege to live and work in the Diplomatic Quarter. I have been impressed with this place since my arrival. Of course, Riyadh itself is a city with a distinctive flavor in which the old and the new are preserved in one place. However, the concept of DQ, its hiking trails, cafes, restaurants, and infrastructure is impressive and commendable. The security of this place, the placement of embassies and entertainment facilities create the best opportunities for maximum productivity. Essentially, DQ allows one to develop soft diplomacy, walking and talking to other diplomats as a means of communicating in informal but productive ways.

As we look around, we see women who have been able to transform society's identity to a new level. Thus, women are "ambassadors" of change who nurture future leaders, change society and elevate the country. It is even more beneficial when women from diverse backgrounds come together to make changes, think together and creatively look beyond the frames to serve the global community.

Amongst many, Mrs. Muna Al Rifai, newly elected president of the Wives of Heads of Mission (WHOM), is an exceptional leader who has inspired fellow WHOM to share her aspirations and vision for a better world. Under her leadership (2022/2023), WHOM will strive to interact with Saudi history, culture, and women, as well as initiate new projects and undertakings.

In 2023, the structure of WHOM will change. Since there are already three female ambassadors in the Kingdom, some new initiatives will be undertaken with the participation of female ambassadors and their husbands. This will be a new fresh wave to WHOM.

Inspired by my first discussion about the vision of WHOM, I once again sat down with Mrs. Muna Al Rifai and WHOM outstanding women to reflect on 2022, their journey of 12 months, achievements, and new beginnings. A genuine and remarkable discussion showed that our hopes and desires are shared regardless of ethnicity, nationality, religion, or cultural background.

We celebrated International Women's Day on March 9 with great success. We enjoyed the panel discussion, costume show, dance, music, food stands and international bazaar.

What trait or skill would like to develop more?

I would like to introduce many people to Japanese culture.

Return to normal activities and daily routine after two years of restrictions. I am also excited to become the new President of WHOM.

What trait or skill would you like to develop more? I would like to build further on my experience of leadership, based on this new position and welcome new members. I also would like to rethink the concept of being a woman leader.

To learn and explore the art and culture of Saudi Arabia as much as possible, to share my knowledge, invite talented artists, designers from Jordan, and expand cultural diplomacy.

What was the best memory of 2022 in DQ? Life returned to its usual course - the joy of sharing delicious food and celebrations in a pleasant company! I consider the whole year as a memory after two years of restrictions.

What sentence or phrase sums up your 2022? A mixture of socio-economic ups and downs as we all try to do our best to support those most affected by the global crisis.

What trait or skill would like to develop more? Create more networks, projects, and partnerships that encourage climate change mitigation, starting at the personal level with family members and communities. As a newcomer, having spent only three months in Riyadh, I have just begun to settle down and collect memories. I am impressed with the lifestyle in Riyadh and the life in the DQ.

At a new place, meeting new friends and locals helps to settle in and feel at home quickly. In other words, home is the people and feelings.

What trait or skill would like to develop more?

In addition to participating in the many activities of the Malaysian community in Riyadh, I would also like to find new friends. It will help to practice Arabic and discovering Saudi culture.

I need to improve my healthy lifestyle and be more physically active before I can actively participate in serious hiking since there are many places for hiking in Riyadh. Celebrating New Year's Eve and counting down with everyone with friends in Switzerland Residence was definitely the best highlight to kick 2022 off.

Iftar in April, first event I attended. I met with other members of WHOM, who became some of my best friends now.

Embracing changes. For me those changes were moving to Riyadh, new place, weather, people and witnessing the changes that are happening in the Kingdom.

What trait or skill would you like to develop more?

I just wish to wake up one day and suddenly speak Arabic.

A YEAR OF CROSSING ‘LINES’

MOHAMMED AMEENUDDIN

Fitness is one of the things that I am passionate about, especially joining different races. With this in mind, I have started planning my yearly goals based on the fitness activities that I will take on that year. 2022 has been a rewarding year for me as I have joined and finished different races which challenged my abilities and determination.

The Spartan Race held on January 21, 2022 was my first event this year. The Saudi Sports for All Federation (SFA) has brought an amazing event that tested the participants’ limits in a fun and healthy way. The race took place over a 10-kilometer course, with 25 obstacles to overcome including mud, water, fire, and barbed wire. As this event was for all ages, it was great to see children starting to get into fitness activities at an early age.

Next on my list was the Riyadh Marathon that was held on March 5, 2022. It was a 42.2-kilometer race organized by SFA that took the athletes to different landmarks in the city such as the King Saud University, the historic Diriyah, and Digital City.

My preparation for the race was on track until the time that I had to make an impromptu visit to my family in February. With the looming marathon just weeks ahead, I decided to join a big local 10-kilometer race in London for cancer awareness to keep my training in balance while also enjoying my time with my family.

I was back in the Kingdom in time for the biggest race and the first official full marathon in Riyadh. SFA once again

“Eat well and be active all year round” — the fitness mantra I lived by this 2022. And this helped me cross finish lines in my races - both in my fitness journey and in life.

did an outstanding work in planning and executing such a momentous event. Seeing so many people from different parts of the world participating was such a pleasant sight. It was also a remarkable event for me to successfully finish the first edition of the Riyadh Marathon.

After Ramadan, I started training for the Nice Côte d'Azur by UTMB, the main race that I challenged myself with this 2022. I joined the Menton-Nice 50K run which was held last September 24 that started with a vertical ascent to the Col du Berceau and ended at the Promenade des Anglais.

The preparation for this event helped me in staying motivated and in managing my time. Revolving the day around my runs and workouts has also helped me to be more productive in handling my work. Added bonus of taking on this race was spending a much-needed vacation with my family in France.

" DQ Living collaborated as media partner with Race Arabia , a sports management company, for two of their major events: The Kingdom Tower Vertical Run and the Tuwaiq Hope Trail Race . I was fortunate to represent DQ Living in these two races."

The Kingdom Tower Vertical Run is where participants had to climb to the top of the Kingdom Tower at the 99th floor to take in the best view of Riyadh and support the Breast Cancer fighters. Four hundred and seventy-three finished the race, which comprised of 53 nationalities, 274 male and 197 female with ages ranging from 14 to 69 years old.

The Tuwaiq Hope Trail Race had three categories: Tuwaiq Hope 10 which is a nice introduction to trail running along the top of the Tuwaiq Escarpment, Tuwaiq Hope 20, a challenging course running through mountain and valley trails, and the Tuwaiq Hope 50, Najd’s first ultra-marathon traversing the Tuwaiq Escarpment and the surrounding diverse landscapes.

Around 55 nationalities, 30 plus sports clubs, and 700 runners with age ranging from 13 to 70 years participated in the beautiful Al Manjoor trail.

I represented DQ Living and despite falling on the mountain early on in the race, I managed to complete the 50-kilometer race. The top-notch aid stations with very knowledgeable volunteers and medical team were some of the best that I had seen in all of my races around the world. Before the year ends, I will undertake the Jeddah Half Marathon happening on December 10th. It will be a nice end to 2022 and will keep me pumped up for the new year.

It is not vital to do big runs and races for you to stay on track in your fitness journey, the main point is for you to keep your health a top priority. You can partner a health goal, like losing weight or getting active, with a specific event to look forward to so that you’ll be accountable to accomplish it.

5 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE DURING TRAVELS

I eagerly showed up in the living room expecting my German host brother waiting for me to head to school together. To my utter shock, he had already left. “German time!” remarked my host mom.

Being a few minutes late would be relatively acceptable in India but in Germany, it’s a different ball game. “Before time is on time. On time is late,’ was my first CQ lesson during a cultural exchange program as a teenager.

‘Cultural Intelligence (CQ) is your ability to function effectively in a culturally diverse situation’ - be it your workplace, business or leisure travels and even at home!

So why do you need to be culturally intelligent? Think of the times when you experienced culture shock in a new country, dealt with frustration because you didn’t speak the tongue, lost a business deal or wondered ‘Isn’t that just common sense?’

Here are some tips on how you can enhance your CQ on your next gateway:

1. Make a list of useful phrases. Making a list of 10 useful phrases, googling the right pronunciations, and keeping them handy while on the road will help you instantly connect with the locals. Think of words like Hello, Thank you, Please, Excuse me, How much? Which way is….?, Goodbye, Yes, No, and so on. Why not add a national song or a dance routine to dive a little deeper into the culture? During my month-long stay in Yuyuan, a historical Chinese village, I picked a song that played on the local radio and learnt it with the help of my Chinese friend. Guess what, the earworm turned into a professional performance on the cultural night with my friend accompanying me on the guitar; the auditorium packed with local villagers swayed and sang along.

2. Go on a walking tour. Most urban cities have a ‘free guided tour’ hosted by young enthusiasts passionate about sharing their culture. You can tip them based on what you feel is appropriate. The guides weave in personal stories, share local recommendations and cultural insights that you won’t find elsewhere. struggles of buying a loaf of bread during Soviet times, Orsi in Hungary made sure we learnt the right pronunciation of Buda-pesht, Anna in Ukraine introduced us to a quirky terrace restaurant in Lviv without a menu - the Chef would prepare anything based on your description, and Mohammed in Istanbul got us hooked to apple tea!

3. Have a local friend. You will experience the city with a whole new perspective with local friends or host families. Think of an old friend from your study abroad days, a work colleague or someone you met on social media. What started with a simple eye contact and a warm exchange of smiles on a public transport in India with a Japanese yoga teacher led to a homestay in the heart of Tokyo. The twoweek experience gave me an opportunity to dive into the Japanese way of life – politeness, harmony, perfection, the importance of hygiene through bathing and footwear culture. I learnt to mindfully segregate my outdoor, home and washroom slippers after a few embarrassing bloopers!

4. Attend festivals and sample local cuisines. One cannot leave a city without trying the local food - be it Svickova na

Looking up for regional festivals while planning your itinerary will give you a chance to immerse in the local flavor. Food and festivals are great ways to exchange cultures, initiate small talk and build long-lasting friendships.

5. Write a blog/journal: Penning down your experience is not just a great way to document your travels but also to learn something new. Maintaining a journal, illustrating, painting, writing poems, or simply sharing photos with taglines on Instagram - just make sure to include at least one fun fact about the culture. I write a WordPress travel blog under ‘kulturekaleidoscope’ with personal travel stories and cultural tidbits. Reading up and learning about the history, neighboring countries, customs and traditions, folklore, values, and beliefs go a long way in bridging cultural gaps and shaping worldviews.

BEST SOLUTIONS WHEN TRAVELING MAKES YOU ILL

As winter approaches in Riyadh, so begins all the fun! What will it be this year? Road trips to different parts of Saudi Arabia, getting on rides at Winter Wonderland, or cross-country flights to visit family and friends? Planning a trip to a new place can be so exciting - until you remember that those bumpy car rides, turbulent flights, and even amusement park rides can make you feel dizzy and sick.

Motion sickness is a common disturbance of the balance system which includes but is not limited to the inner ear. It leads to nausea, sweating, and drowsiness which some people experience when the balance system is stimulated in an unexpected way.

WHAT CAUSES MOTION SICKNESS?

Your brain senses movement by getting signals from your ears, eyes, muscles and joints. When there’s a disconnect between what our eyes see and what our inner ear is telling us and how we are moving, our brain may not know whether we are stationary or moving. For example, you might be-

come airsick because your eyes cannot see the turbulence that is tossing the plane from side to side. According to the Genetics Home Reference Journal, motion sickness tends to cluster in families. You’re comparatively more likely to have motion sickness if you have a family member who is highly susceptible to it.

HOW TO PREVENT MOTION SICKNESS?

Motion sickness can occur with any mode of travel: on a plane, train, bus, car or boat. To lessen your chances of feeling ill, it’s important to choose your seat wisely such as -the front seat of a car, -the forward cars of a train -the middle of the boat on the upper deck or -the wing seat on a plane

Being able to predict the physical motion of the vehicle or actually being able to see outside of the vehicle in the direction of travel can often be helpful.

Look forward at a fixed point on the horizon and avoid close visual tasks. If possible, lean your head against the headrest to minimize movement and stand up if you feel queasy. It’s also important to avoid distractions like phones, tablets and books. Motion sickness can be worsened by reading or using your smartphone or by being on a winding road.

Don’t forget to eat the right food before and during travel. In the hours before you travel, avoid greasy foods but make sure to drink lots of water and get plenty of rest. While traveling, eat dry crackers and avoid cigarette smoke.

Breathe in soothing mint, ginger, or lavender scents and go for candies made with peppermint or ginger.

If your child gets motion sickness, be sure to keep plastic bags handy in case they throw up. If they’re over 12 years old, have them ride in the front of the car. If they’re younger, have them sit in the middle seat so they can look forward toward the road.

HOW TO TREAT MOTION SICKNESS?

As per AAFP recommendations, medications are most effective when combined with behavioral strategies mentioned above.

• You can head to your local pharmacy and look for over-thecounter antihistamines that can both prevent and treat it such as meclizine, dimenhydrinate, and diphenhydramine.

• People who have motion sickness are also more prone to migraine headaches. Both migraine and motion sickness sufferers tend to share the same symptoms of nausea, dizziness, and headaches, according to a study done linking migraine and motion sickness. Getting proper treatment for your migraine can sometimes help with motion sickness.

• If you have severe motion sickness, prescription scopolamine pills (an anticholinergic) or a skin patch are other options. Neurologists recommend applying the patch to the skin behind the ear can help prevent motion sickness for upto three days.

WHEN SHOULD YOU CALL YOUR DOCTOR?

If you experience chronic persistent nausea or vomiting, having motion sickness symptoms when you’re not involved in a moving activity, and/or have signs of dehydration.

In early November, ENCORE Restaurant welcomed its new Head Chef, Mr. Ali Awarky. Hailing from Lebanon, Chef Ali

has been a professional chef for over 20 years - with 12 of those spent in Saudi Arabia. His expertise is in European cuisine with his training focused on French and Italian dishes. He is excited about joining the ENCORE team and we learned more about him during his interview for DQ Living.

Origins

From a young age, Chef Ali knew that he wanted to be a chef. He is the first from his immediate family to be a chef and he cannot imagine himself in any other career: “Cooking is where I find myself. It allows me to be creative and it’s where I feel most comfortable.” He credits his mother’s

cooking as a major influence in his desire to become a chef. As he widened his horizons through his travels in countries like Turkey and the Maldives, he likes to experience the traditional methods in which their food is prepared. He wants to learn how the flavors in each region differ and gain inspiration from it to translate them in his culinary creations.

Beyond the taste of the dish, he is also passionate about how the food is plated. “I want to treat my plates like a painting. I want to leave my signature on the plate; so that when people see it, they’ll know that it’s a Chef Ali plate.”

Challenges as a Chef

When creating a new menu, Chef Ali says that sourcing products to use is always a challenge, especially when certain ingredients are hard to find. However, that’s where one’s creativity comes in and how a chef can re-imagine a recipe with the ingredients available at hand.

By the first quarter of 2023, Chef Ali plans on launching ENCORE’s new menu which will highlight a more high-casual dining experience; infusing Levant cuisine, elegant burgers and a brunch offering on weekends. He is also envisioning a special menu for the national days of embassies in the DQ where dishes of each country can be featured. Aligned with his goal of always bringing something new to the table, he also plans on having a Chef’s Menu that will showcase his latest innovative recipes.

Ten minutes to touchdown and all you see from your window seat is a vast, sandy escarpment. “Where is this city of eight million people?” you wonder. A few traces of humanity come into view, then a wave of metropolitan homes, shops, and skyscrapers floods your view. “Impressive!”

Riyadh’s treasures seem to gradually unfold, increasing in allure and diversity the longer you stay. From historic Al Masmak Fortress to Diriyah’s JAX art district to King Abdullah Financial District’s state-of-the-art architecture, Riyadh offers something for everyone if you’re curious and patient enough to enjoy the adventure.

From the country’s humble origins in a mud-brick fortress to today’s world-leading giga projects, the rate of change and resulting social adaptation in Riyadh has been stunning. While modern-day Riyadh is bustling with malls, busy

streets, and lively plazas at night, life was quite different in the mid-1990s. “All shops in my neighborhood would shut after evening’s Isha prayer. To pick up khubz (bread) at night, I used to drop money in a box outside the bake shop and get a piece from a basket beside it,” recollects Hussam Alrwais, Client Progress Coordinator at Arabius. “Local residents back in the day also slept as early as 9pm,” he adds, highlighting the contrast to today’s events starting at that time!

“There are so many cool cafes in Riyadh, everyone can have one to themselves!” jokes Malak AlMasoud, a talented artist and Graphic Designer leading the Arabius app design team. “My idea of a perfect weekend is dining at a well-reviewed restaurant, café-hopping with my sisters, then just walking the streets into the night. Since the opening of Riyadh Season 2022 last October, more than two million people have already visited its zones and various entertainment activities and events.

This year’s Riyadh Season edition is being held under the slogan “Beyond Imagination” and promises 14 fun zones for all. Noor Riyadh, one of the world’s most exciting festivals of light and art, celebrated its second edition with bigger and bolder figures. Noor Riyadh, with this year’s theme of “We Welcome New Horizons”, welcomed 2.8 million visitors across its 40 citywide locations and five hubs including King Abdullah Park, Salam Park, Diplomatic Quarter (DQ), KAFD, Bayt AlMalaz, Jax District, Al Masmak, Wadi Namar, Wadi Hanifah, The Ritz Carlton, King Fahd National Library, Olaya Park, The Zone, and Majdoul Tower. ‘We Dream of New Horizons’ was curated by Hervé Mikaeloff, Dorothy Di Stefano, and Jumana Ghouth, along with curatorial adviser Arnaud Morand. The citywide Noor Riyadh 2022 included at least 90 new commissions

from international and Saudi artists, such as Ahaad Alamoudi, Abdullah AlOthman, Daniah Al Saleh, Rashed AlShashai, Sarah Brahim, Daniel Buren, Bricklab, Douglas Gordon, Tadashi Kawamata, Alicja Kwade, Jean-Michel Othoniel, and Muhannad Shono.

OVER 600,000 FANS ENJOY MDLBEAST SOUNDSTORM 2022

Organized by MDLBEAST and tagged as the “loudest week" in RIyadh, Soundstorm 2022 which opened on December 1, 2022, was attended by more than 600,000 fans in three days culminating with stunning shows from headliners Bruno Mars, David Guetta, and Marshmello on Saturday.

The global superstars were the headline BIG BEAST acts to help bring the curtain down on an incredible event that saw revelers enjoy 260 hours of live music from 200 artists across seven stages under the Banban desert skies. The event had seven stages that offered different unique beats and music from various local and international artists and performers.

Soundstorm 2022 was located on a site with a total area of more than 5.5 million square meters. It had the Big Beast, Down Beast, and Dance Beast along with four Underground stages featuring a diverse range of musical genres including EDM, hip hop, R&B, and indie.

BIG BEAST headline acts on Thursday and Friday at the three-day festival included Tiësto, Swedish House Mafia, DJ Khaled, Post Malone, Nancy Ajram, Amr Diab, and many more. The other stages saw Jorja Smith at Down Beast, Solomun at Underground 1, and Steve Aoki in Dance Beast.

DIPLOMATIC QUARTER HOLDS CATWALK 2022

In one of its stations and in conjunction with its launch at the local and international levels, last November 5, 2022, the Catwalk Riyadh 2022 initiative arrived in the Diplomatic Quarter in Riyadh, sponsored by the Diplomatic Quarter Office of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Catwalk is one of the initiatives of the Catmosphere Foundation, which is concerned with protecting 40 endangered species of wild cats, with the aim of preserving them in their natural environment, by raising awareness of the importance of preserving endangered wild cats all over the world.

The Catwalk initiative is an annual awareness walk that aims to spread awareness of the interdependence of collective well-being with the creatures around us by high-

lighting the importance of preserving the seven wild cats (lion, jaguar, cheetah, tiger, mountain lion, snow leopard, leopard). More than 600 officials, ambassadors, diplomats, and their families attended the event.

The Catmosphere Foundation, which was launched by Her Highness Princess Rima bint Bandar bin Sultan, Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to the United States of America in 2021, is a non-profit organization whose goal is to preserve the life of wild cats, including the Arabian leopard, and to protect their natural life cycle, in addition to promoting and supporting the work of cats. Panthera is the only organization dedicated exclusively to preserving the lives of 40 species of wild cats in the world by launching a number of strategic initiatives and awareness campaigns and supporting regional and international initiatives in this regard.

DUR HOSTS BEYOND PINK 2022

Every October, Dur Hospitality hosts Beyond Pink, an event to raise awareness on breast cancer. This year, Beyond Pink took place at Tuwaiq Gardens in the Diplomatic Quarter (DQ) on October 29, 2022. Dur employees, wives of heads of mission (WHOM), and DQ residents gathered for an afternoon of fun, friendship, and reflection.

The park was turned into a beautiful pink sanctuary with dainty seating arrangements and pink balloons marking the occasion. Guests enjoyed fresh juices and assorted healthy sandwiches and snacks. An all-female team from Woosh entertainment organized team building exercises that were both challenging and entertaining. The games were fun and everyone had a nice time solving puzzles and running relays.

Coach Maha Nazer led a meditation session encouraging ladies to release their limiting beliefs and embrace their true light and abundance.

EMBASSY OF TÜRKIYE CELEBRATES 99TH

YEAR OF THE REPUBLIC

The Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Riyadh joyously celebrated the 99th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Türkiye together with hundreds of guests, including fellow diplomats, respected Saudi officials, business circles, Turkish and Saudi citizens.

The reception was inaugurated with the national anthems of Türkiye and Saudi Arabia after the arrival of the guest of honour, Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al-Sudairi, Undersecretary of the Governor of Riyadh. A video regarding the 500th anniversary of the establishment of Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs was also displayed.

Following the video show, Mr. Fatih Ulusoy, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye in Riyadh delivered a speech. In his speech, Ambassador Ulusoy underlined that Türkiye was one of the first countries to have recognized the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (then the Kingdom of Hejaz and Najd) and immediately after sent the first diplomatic envoy in 1926. Ambassador Ulusoy added that this year, following the re-

ciprocal visits of President, H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in April and HRH Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister in June, significant developments took place in Turkish-Saudi bilateral relations. Ambassador Ulusoy finally referred that Türkiye is an exclusive touristic destination for Saudis and Türkiye looks forward to hosting more Saudi guests in the upcoming years.

After Ambassor Mr. Fatih Ulusoy’s speech, H.E. President of Republic of Türkiye Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s message was read. In his message, President Erdoğan congratulated the 29th October Republic Day of Turkish citizens in all corners of the world and also commemorated with gratitude Ghazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, alongside the heroes who crowned the War of Independence with victory, and the patriotic members of the Grand National Assembly. President Erdoğan mentioned that Türkiye’s struggle for independence was a beacon of inspiration to the oppressed people a century ago.

In the wake of President Erdoğan’s message, Ambassador Mr. Fatih Ulusoy and the guest of honor, Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al-Sudairi, Undersecretary of the Governor of Riyadh, held the cake cutting ceremony.

NORWEGIAN EMBASSY AND SEAFOOD COUNCIL CONDUCT BLEND CULINARY

As the part of Saudi Horeca at Marriott, the biggest international food, beverage, and hospitality exhibition in Saudi Arabia, the Norwegian Embassy in Riyadh, in collaboration with the Norwegian Seafood Council, organized “Blend Culinary” cooking workshop to introduce the best of the Norwegian seafood and explore the expectations of Saudi consumers. The opening remarks of the workshop were delivered by Ambassador Thomas Lid Ball. The Ambassador emphasized that the sea and seafood as integral parts of the two countries culture, heritage, and future.

He further recalled the start of the Norwegian Seafood Council’s journey in the Saudi market. "Six years ago, the seafood industry asked the Seafood Council to look at the growing seafood market in Saudi Arabia. Our two kingdoms have a similar history, and nowadays, we aim to ensure a green transition throughout our industries and sustainable management of our natural resources."

The Norwegian Seafood Council works closely with the fisheries and aquaculture industry to improve markets through research, development, and risk management. This has resulted in high quality, evident in the characteristic taste of

the species caught in Norway. The country is the world's largest Atlantic salmon producer, accounting for approximately 70% of Norwegian seafood exports to more than 150 countries. It is highly nutritious and rich in vitamins, proteins, and Omega-3.

Discussing the quality of the seafood, the Business Development Manager of the Council, Mr. Jan Eirik Johnsen, mentioned, "The quality of Norwegian seafood is a result of fantastic natural conditions, a 1000-year history of harvesting and exporting our seafood, innovation, and peoples' skills. When I asked about the current state of exports in the Saudi market, Mr. Johnsen said that seafood exports from Norway to Saudi Arabia had seen a very positive development in the last few years. The volume has more than doubled in the last five years, and this year will be a new record. "From what I have observed at the Saudi Horeca, there is great interest in Norwegian seafood, and the feedback is that there is an increasing demand, not least connected to the growing sushi trend in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, we regard the potential in Saudi Arabia as very good."

A well-known Norwegian Chef, Daniel Rouge Madsen, led the workshop and cooked 1500 portions of seafood. He described Saudi cuisine as steaming from its culture and traditions, being meat-based, rich in spices and salads, and low in salt, yet sweet. When I asked what flavor of Saudi cuisine he would try with Norwegian salmon, Chef Daniel answered, "With salmon, I would use the different spice mixes such as zaatar or cumin/cayenne. It also goes well with hummus, mint, coriander, and rice."

It is well known that one of the reasons people travel is to experience the food culture in other countries. Cooperation between Norwegian exporters and Saudi importers, producers, and the entire value chain all the way to the consumer make Saudis to feel in Norway, enjoying delicious seafood seasoned with warm Saudi spices.

The seafood industry in Norway delivers 42 million servings of seafood to people all over the world every day. Saudi Horeca has become a great meeting place and opportunity for producers and consumers who were privileged to taste not only Norwegian salmon, but also mackerel, cod, herring and king crab.

us about yourself.

My name is Mario Cuevas, I was born and raised in Mexico City. I graduated from the Law Faculty at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 2018 and joined the Mexican Foreign Service in August 2019. Currently I'm living in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and since 2020, I live inside the Diplomatic Quarter. I'm a hard-working, driven person who isn't afraid to face a challenge and is always motivated to travel and to learn more about different cultures and societies around the globe.

Who or what have been the strongest influences in your life?

Undoubtedly, my family has been my main reference and starting point in my life and professional career, since it is at home where the values of inclusion, respect for diversity, and mutual help are acquired. On the other hand, my friends are fundamental pillars in the construction of my identity and their friendship constitutes my most valuable support network.

What brought you to Riyadh?

Saudi Arabia is my first destination as a member of the Mexican Foreign Service. Back in 2019, during the final interview before we were assigned destinations, the jury on duty asked me "Which country don’t you like to go to?" To which I replied, “For various reasons, I would like to avoid the Middle East.” Shortly after, I was notified that I was appointed to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Three years after receiving that notification, I am fully convinced that it was the best decision the jury made.

Service arose during my time in college. In 2016, I had the opportunity to participate in a Moot Court Competition before the International Criminal Court. The experience after the contest allowed me to learn about the work of the Mexican Foreign Ministry and a short time later, I performed the admission exams to the Service, a complex and highly competitive process that at the end, allowed me to start my career abroad. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a fundamental role in my professional career because during my time here, I have had the chance to develop multiple skills in various fields such as consular attention and the cultural promotion of Mexico beyond its borders.

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far?

The most important achievement of my career until now was having the opportunity to learn about the diplomatic tradition in a country currently under a profound process of transformation. After three years here, I realized that our cultures and societies are in fact incredibly similar. It is important to keep building more understanding bridges, in order to reduce the distance between our countries.

What do you like most about the DQ?

The possibility of meeting people from all over the world just by going out of my home. I also enjoy its wide green areas, through which I usually walk in the company of my dog Al-Kufuf, who takes advantage of his walks to meet new playmates.

Any tips/recommendations/advice for your DQ neighbors?

I would like to recommend DQ residents to enjoy the green areas and the wide range of restaurants, and also encourage them to explore the area by bicycle, taking advantage of the upcoming winter season.
