PLATELETS, MEGAKARYOCYTES AND HISTIOCYTE MORPHOLOGY Dr. Akram Al-Hilali 2011

MEGAKARYOCYTES 

Large cells found only in the bone marrow after birth.

Platelets are detached from cytoplasm edge of the megakaryocytes (budding)

The do not take any of the DNA with them.

Normal megakarocyte

PLATELET SIZE AND GRANULATION 

Normal size platelets

Giant platelets with normal granulation

May-Hegglin anomaly (with neutrophil abnormality of Döhle bodies))

Thrombocythemia and other myeloproliferative neoplasms

Giant platelets with absent granulation (Gray platelets)

HISTIOCYTES 

Normal cell in tissue

In marrow and spleen one may see some phagocytosis of debris and blood cells (hemophagocytosis).

Hemophagocytosis increases in some inflammatory conditions.

It is extreme in hemophagocytic syndrome
