POIKILOCYTOSIS  Any change from normal biconcave disc with

smooth round edges is a type of poikilocytosis  Some kinds of poikilocytosis are very specific and others are non-specific, occurring in many conditions.  Adding poikilocytosis type to anisocytosis, polychromasia, Hb and MCV levels as well as clinical information will make a diagnosis likely. 08/13/14

CRENATION  Generalized in severe dehydration,

small sample and old sample.  Small numbers seen in renal and liver disease  Usually seen with burr and acanthocytes

ACANTHOCYTES & BURR CELLS  Acanthocytes are seen in liver disease.  Can be congenital and shows from birth

with abnormalities in lipid metabolism  Burr cells are seen in small numbers in chronic renal disease.  Crenation, burr cells and acanthocytes may be seen together in liver and renal disease‫ز‬  The three can be seen after splenectomy. 08/13/14

TEARDROP CELL (PEAR) ď Ž Seen in many different

conditions ď Ž They can be accompanied by oval cells, in which case it could be a serious condition: like marrow occupying disease, megaloblastic anemia and thalassemia major 08/13/14
