Happy New Year!

hat? You thought the new year starts on January 1st? Not if you are a dealer, vendor, or connected to Drag Specialties in some way. If you are, it started the fourth week of August in Madison, WI. I’m talking about the annual NVP Product Expo that the company has held there for many years. That’s when our new year really starts.

This issue features not one, but two very cool custom builds by people from within the Drag Specialties family circle. Our Z1R-themed cover bike was built by none other than veteran Drag sales rep Joe Sanderson. We call this one a “rolling showroom,” as it was built right out of the Drag Specialties FatBook. Be sure to check out the many cool upgrades that Joe did to his 2007 — yes 2007 — Harley FLTR. What a great example of what can be done to an older motorcycle and end up with something that makes people smile as much as a brand new bike.

You’ll see our report of this year’s event starting on page 20. There were a number of things that we noted that deserved a place in the story. It all started with the “NVP,” which stands for National Vendor Presentations. The first two days were devoted to these classroom or theater presentations by selected Drag Specialties vendors who went over their new 2017 products and programs.

You’ll find our other feature bike starting on page 36. If it looks like a vintage bike, you are right because the rolling chassis is a 1979 HarleyDavidson FLH. But the original motor from Harley’s AMF days was upgraded to a new S&S 93-inch Panhead powerplant. Tyler Malinky of Lowbrow Customs did the build on this project. You might recognize the name, as Drag Specialties carries many of the specialty V-twin products Lowbrow sells through the FatBook.

Two of the nights at the show featured some notable events. The first was the annual LeMans Night of the Stars where sales reps and staff were recognized not only for exceptional sales results, but also for their years of service to the company. On another night, Michelin Tires hosted many of the attendees for their third annual NVP/Michelin Power Jam, a fun night at Madison’s Majestic Theater where sales reps, vendors and LeMans staff join together on stage for a night of music and song.

2016 is just about in the books now. In February we will all be gathered in Indianapolis for the return of motorcycle dealer shows there, but now produced by Drag Specialties and the event crew from LeMans Corporation! We can’t wait.

As the week neared its conclusion, many invited Drag Specialties dealers arrived for their chance to enjoy the unveiling of many 2017 products in a conventional trade show environment. They also attended the annual Meet & Greet reception, which this year included an expanded custom bike show where dealers brought some of their cool custom project bikes for all to see.

Ride Safe!

NEWS EVENTS Daytona’s iconic archway to the beach looks great here, just days after a hurricane’s tidal surge had it filled to the top with water.

BIKETOBERFEST 2016 THE RALLY THAT ALMOST WASN’T Story and photos by Joe Kress

J

ust days before Biketoberfest 2016 was scheduled for kickoff, the biggest, nastiest hurricane to hit Daytona Beach in decades roared through the area.

In the wake of Hurricane Matthew was pure devastation. Trees were snapped and uprooted. Roads were blocked with debris or buried deep under water. Power lines were down. Homes and businesses were either destroyed or shuttered up tight. The place was a mess.

A downsized Biketoberfest 2016 still kept Main Street full and, as a bonus, there always seemed to be a parking spot open.

Despite all this, Biketoberfest still went on. Just hours after Daytona Beach had survived Hurricane Matthew, the roads, for the most part, were being cleared. Florida Power & Light, with plenty of help from crews coming from as far away as Massachusetts and Texas, had miraculously restored electricity to nearly everyone. Local shops, bars and restaurants were digging out and Biketoberfest vendors were setting up their displays in all the usual spots. Daytona and Biketoberfest might have taken a hit, but neither the town, the motorcycle aftermarket or some pretty resilient riders ready to rally were anywhere near down for the count.

See and be seen, hurricane or not it’s a Daytona Beach tradition. Little question who’s got the cooler ride here.

The never-say-die Drag Specialties team showed up in full strength with plenty to show and plenty to talk about with the diehard riders who made it to Biketoberfest.

Just in case you were wondering, those big-wheel baggers are just as popular, and prevalent, as ever. Bikes like this beauty were everywhere.

The Custom Dynamics team always seems to have a full house; the company’s lighting accessories are that popular.

Now, it’s safe to say that Biketoberfest 2016 was destined to be a bit different than any of the October events preceding it. Given the situation, attendance was off from previous years, but there were still plenty of riders from such nearby sates as Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Virginia. And, while there were fewer vendors on hand at all the usual locations, Destination Daytona, the Speedway and so on, the major brands in the industry were all present and accounted for, with reps on hand to help out. Riders looking for the lowdown on the latest set of pipes, wheels, audio equipment, lighting, you name it, got the full story and then some.

Hurricane Matthew might have washed away a good part of the attendance, but you wouldn’t know it on Main Street. That stretch of road from the river to the sea manages to stay packed no matter what.

The hurricane’s wrath also took its toll on local roads. While the weather was perfect for cruising along the beach or riding along the area’s tree-canopied, sun-dappled routes, some roads were blocked off or completely washed away, resulting in plenty of detours. continued on page 12...

oe Sanderson has been a Drag Specialties rep for 23 years, working the northeast and north-central Ohio region. His dealers know him well, and they know when he’s going to show up. They can hear him coming. Weather permitting Joe makes the rounds on his motorcycle, and for a few years now that motorcycle has been tricked out with some of the latest and greatest to hit the FatBook. Joe doesn’t dig into the trunk of a car to show his dealers some new-product samples, they’re right there on his bike. Installed, in service and on display.

For a while now Joe has also had some pretty good success turning his dealers onto the Z1R line. Credit that to the fact that whenever he shows up with that sample-laden bike, he’ll be on display, as well. Decked out head to toe in whatever is new from Z1R, he’ll be wearing the helmets, jackets, gloves, chaps and other gear, all that in service and on display, too. And now he’s backed all of this up with a fresh round of sample-parts customization for the bike topped off with a paint job that puts the Z1R graphics and logos front-and-center.

COVER BIKE Joe Sanderson rides his bike to work and, as a 23-year veteran Drag Specialties sales rep, his work is showing dealers what is new and hot in the FatBook. This is how he does it, putting a number of those new-product samples on his own bike so everyone gets an up-close and personal look.

Joe’s 2007 FLTR took shape slowly, a couple-year project beginning with the RSD wheels and culminating in that wild Z1R-inspired paint job. Saddlebags are the Drag Specialties Extended, the audio’s all Hogtunes, the handlebar’s Alloy Art, and lots of the trim came from Covington’s.

“Dealers love all this,” Joe says. “They like it when a rep shows up on a motorcycle.” That appreciation works both ways. Just as the dealers support Joe, he supports them. He bought his latest rolling-display machine from HarleyDavidson Bike Town in Austintown, Ohio, a solid Drag Specialties dealer.

equipped 103, with a Cobra exhaust, a Baker Plus One pan and a Power Commander tune. All of this and much of what would come later went on right there at Bike Town H-D. “And, those FatBook samples kept coming,” Joe says. Bit by bit Alloy Art handlebars and a TXR Stabilizer joined the party, as did Arlen Ness grips and a 10-Gauge Primary Cover, DP’s clutch kit, Covington’s Finned Fork Bellows, Fuel Door and Dash and the list kept growing. Take a look at the accompanying Build Sheet for the full rundown of everything he installed.

He got it in 2009, a leftover 2007 model FLTR, and almost immediately the samples began to go on. Wheels and tires came first, RSD Contrast-Cut Diesels wearing Metzeler ME880s. OWNER, JOE SANDERSON - DRAG REP / Built by Harley-Davidson Bike Town, Austintown, Ohio Straight Shooter Custom Cycles, Mogadore, Ohio Dragonfly Custom Cycles, Massillon, Ohio Those are Cobra Power-Flo mufflers peeking out below the saddlebags. The taillights are pure custom while up front a 10-inch Memphis Shades dark windshield provides the protection, and Dakota Digital’s 3000 Series dresser gauge kit keeps everyone informed.

At this point, Joe decided to take it to the next level. “I wanted to somehow include Z1R into the bike,” he says, but obviously couldn’t bolt those helmets, jackets and all the rest onto the motorcycle itself. What he could do was give that motorcycle an unmistakable Z1R theme. First up a set of those Drag Specialties Extended Saddlebags were added along with a new Drag Specialties seat. A Klock Werks front fender went on as did a Memphis Shades windscreen, some LED lighting and a full Hogtunes audio system including the Lid Speaker Kit. All this was put in place by another one of Joe’s dealers, Straight Shooter Custom Cycles in Mogadore, Ohio. Dragonfly Custom Cycles in nearby Massillon gets credit for the custom Z1R paint and graphics job topping it all off, a dead-ringer match to the color and look on one of the latest 2017 Z1R helmets, the Strike Ops SV, with SV standing for sun visor. These are full-face helmets that have a little sun visor tucked up inside. Press a button and it slides down right in front of your eyes. Instant sunglasses. “I had some ‘top secret’ photos of that new helmet,” Joe says, “and Dave at Dragonfly took it from there.” Complete with the Z1R logo. “The whole thing came out way better than I expected,” Joe says. He shouldn’t be so surprised. While there are plenty of FatBook samples here, nothing has been overused or overdone. “I tried to keep it from getting too gaudy, looking like I just threw the catalog at it hoping for the best.”

The guys at Bike Town, Street Shooter and Dragonfly all helped with that restraint, too. “They’re the experts at what they do,” Joe says. “I trusted their judgment.” That’s another two-way street. For 23 years now those dealers have trusted Joe Sanderson to keep them up to date on what’s new and hot in the industry, more often than not simply pointing at his bike to show it. ■

At its second running, the Bike Show attracted entries across the powersports spectrum – from custom V-twins and ice-racing bikes to scooters and muscle cruisers. BACK IN THE MADISON GROOVE NVP/MICHELIN JAM RETURNS FOR THIRD YEAR

T

hird time’s the charm, right? With the NVP/Michelin Power Jam, it certainly seems like it.

The wildly popular concert, featuring the combined talents of a number of Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties sales reps and LeMans vendors and employees, returned to the stage at Madison’s Majestic Theater before a packed house. And, for the third year running, it was a resounding hit. We talked with Michelin’s Eric Miller about the history and future of the event that has clearly cemented itself as one of the must-do after-hour events of the NVP Product Expo:

Drag Specialties Magazine: How did the Jam get started? Eric Miller: Working with the different reps, it seemed like we

were always talking about music, and more often than not, the rep would mention that they played in a band or at least played an instrument for fun.

After seeing how many reps played something, or sang, I would joke that we could get a really killer band together if we could just coordinate the travel. Then, at a meeting with some RSMs, music came up again, and someone mentioned that NVP solves the travel logistics. I offered to plan the event if LeMans would support us hosting an after-hours party. They were eager, and the rest is history.

What were your thoughts when you first launched the Jam three years ago? TecMate’s Martin Human shows that he’s just as talented with the keyboards as he is well-versed in the science of battery chargers.

I was terrified. I could see it being either a great success, or a complete train wreck. I had committed to running the show, and to be honest I had no experience at all with putting on a concert. I had no idea how much work went into planning and preparing for the few hours of performance. LeMans has some professional-caliber performers, and they made sure that we were prepared. As a team, we made sure that the venue provided the equipment, the sound mixing, a professional sound man to run the show behind the scenes, and so on.

Racer X publisher and noted blues guitarist/musician Scott Wallenberg jumped on stage for a guest spot, a performance that nearly brought down the house.

I rented equipment so that people wouldn’t have to travel with their instruments, but it has grown so big that everyone wants to have their own beloved guitar or bass or amp, and I no longer have to bring much equipment.

Are you shocked by how popular the Jam has become?

There’s talent throughout the ranks at LeMans. Parts Unlimited rep Don Buss rips it up while performing with the NVP/Michelin Jam “house” band.

Yes and no. Of course I am shocked and humbled by how well received the event was. Looking back, I think that it was destined for success (not because of me though). The people involved are all outstanding musicians and every one of them was extremely helpful from the beginning.

They worked together to make sure that everyone knew a large list of songs to play, so that there wouldn’t be any dead air. And they remain humble too – even though we have almost what you’d call a house band – Benny Harwell, Matt Norman, Dave Jengo, Torsten Corum, Todd Petterson, Kent DeBie, and Charlie Addams, they still encourage anyone to come up and sing, play, or do whatever they do best.

For three years running now Parts rep Matt Norman has shredded the lead guitar in the Jam’s “house” band. This year he performed some blistering Pink Floyd covers.

That’s why we have so many others who get forced to come up and perform, like Jim Matchette, Rob Bluma, Adam Alberghine, Jenna Lee, and so many more. Now the other vendors have gotten involved, and the level of talent keeps rising. Martin Human from TecMate and Scott Wallenberg from Racer X are just two examples – great musicians, great friends, and great talents who contribute a ton.

What’s your favorite part of the night?

From left: Michelin’s Ron Bowen and Eric Miller join Drag Specialties rep Benny Harwell and Michelin’s Ross Shields to take to the stage for a round of applause from a thankful audience.

My favorite is in the beginning, watching the guys get set up and sound-checking the equipment. To me, that is when they go from being a bunch of individuals to being a single unit. I love watching them get everything dialed in, knowing how much work they put into it. When the audience gets there, and they appreciate how great the guys sound, I think a lot of them are just unaware of how tough it is to get to that point. That makes me feel proud that the band can make it look so seamless.

Any touring plans? Actually, yes! We are exploring the possibility of bringing the event to other LeMans functions. We’re still in the exploratory stage, trying to figure out if the logistics will work, but most definitely! ■ Drag Specialties national sales manager Jim Matchette took to the stage to display his guitar chops.

obra Engineering is on the gas in the aftermarket Harley-Davidson exhaust market with five new exhaust products developed for Harley-Davidson’s new 2017 Bagger models. Each of these mufflers comes with Cobra’s Limited Lifetime Warranty. Because of the new 8-valve engine that powers the 2017 Baggers, these mufflers are more than just lightly modified versions from Cobra’s existing portfolio of products. In fact, the updated internal constructions have been specifically designed to enable the greatest performance increases from the new 107 Milwaukee Eight engine as well as to unleash its great sound. “We reworked these initial mufflers to fit the look and sound of the 2017. Then we made sure they would perform as the customer expects, while giving those buyers a wide selection coming out of the gate,” says Tim McCool, president of Cobra Engineering. Additionally, McCool adds, the company’s detachable backrests already fit the new Harleys.

Here are the mufflers that are ready for purchase, and all but the 4-inch RPT are available in black. RACE PRO: Its look is as distinctive as its deep throaty rumble. The Race Pro’s unique black clamshell mounting bracket sets it apart from any other muffler on the market, and that look gets even better with its black thin-line tip. A perforated core wrapped in a fiberglass pillow creates its deep sound. NH SERIES MUFFLER: The Neighbor Hater muffler is for that rider who thinks too loud is just right. And it’s more than just a loud-crowd pleaser because it also sounds so great with its deep rumble. Like the Race Pro its 4-inch round body bells out to a 4.5-inch rolled tip. 909 TWINS: The 909 Twins 4-inch round muffler is unique on several fronts. First, the rear is finished with a rolled scalloped tip, not a simple slash cut. That rolled tip is matched with an inner core finished with the same scalloped cut. The inner tip is actually part of the constant velocity, tuned core that gives the muffler its great sound and performance.

With easy installation, incredible sound and top of its class performance the PowrFlo is tough to beat. It’s 3-inch high-flow core offers superior performance with an incredibly deep sound. 4-INCH RPT: The 4-inch, Race Pro Tip is finished in satin black, and held in place with seven, 12-point zinc plated bolts. It delivers increased performance right off the bottom with a deeper, more aggressive exhaust note.

This initial portfolio of slip-ons ensures that there is a look and sound for even the most discriminating of customers. From the deep bass tone of the Race Pro and PowrFlo mufflers, to the louder bark of the Neighbor Haters, and the classic sound emanating from the 909-Twins, there’s something for everyone. ■

VINTAGE LOOKS, MODERN DEPENDABILITY

J

ust days after tightening the last bolts on this vintage-look/S&S Panhead-powered long-distance cruiser, Lowbrow Custom’s Tyler Malinky and his wife Julie threw their legs over the bike and took off on a 3,000 mile jaunt through 13 states. “Our hope here,” Tyler said, “is to ride this bike through all 50 states. And that includes Alaska and Hawaii!” Zig-zagging across the country from Lowbrow’s Brunswick, Ohio headquarters to sunny Southern California and the S&S Cycle booth at Born Free, the bike didn’t skip a beat, and that inaugural ride was important. It was paying off a debt, so to speak, for the very creation of the motorcycle Tyler and the Lowbrow crew had come to call the Pan-American. See, it was the marketing team at S&S Cycle that first floated the idea for this bike. Like they’d done with a few

other folks, they’d lay a new S&S engine on Tyler and the Lowbrow team, they’re choice, if they’d put together a bike showcasing that motor. Last issue, you might remember, we featured the Shovelhead-powered Mile Muncher by the guys at Biltwell. Same plan. Tyler ended up choosing the 93-inch S&S Cycle Panhead. Since S&S wanted to show off the bike at their booth during that Born Free event he figured what better way to demonstrate the reliability of these vintage-style motors than to ride one cross-country. “We built this bike pretty quickly,” Tyler tells us. Shortly after the engine was delivered, Lowbrow found itself in the middle of a big move, selling one building and buying a new one. There was a whole period in there when nothing happened with the bike.

LOWBROW CUSTOMS PAN-AMERICAN BIKE

Lowbrow Customs set a 50-state goal for the “PanAmerican.” Just weeks after completion the bike and rider already had 13 down, 37 to go.

“Eventually we had to get it done to make that promised date in California, but by then it was May,” Tyler explains. “We had to be there in June. So basically we built the bike in about a month, and that included the powder coating and paint. We fired it up for the first time three days before we had to leave.” Impressive, but honestly most of this bike just bolted together. Since the plan was to make a motorcycle that would be as simple, reliable and trouble free as possible, something for the long haul, that S&S Panhead went into a 1979 Harley-Davidson FLH frame. It would have disc brakes, good suspension and that would be coupled with a cool, vintage-custom style. It turned into a fun project, and there wasn’t much fabrication work involved. Truth is, about the only thing the guys had to make up themselves was the exhaust, and

Biltwell came through with their no-frills Norman foot pegs, a great fit to the overall theme here.

The only glitch fitting that S&S Pan into a late frame, easily remedied, was minor interference with the finned rocker covers.

That handlebar’s set in place with Drag Specialties’ trees, Timkin bearings and Drag cups — necessary hardware like that is always in the FatBook.

PAN-AMERICAN CUSTOM

Three thousand miles on a fresh build and the only problem was a broken kickstand spring. S&S wanted proof of its Panhead’s reliability and got it.

even that started with a Paughco 2-into-1 system. But since this brand-new Panhead engine was a tick taller than an original, and now mounted in a ’79 frame, they had to cut and reposition those pipes to make things fit. Incidentally, Tyler adds, that 93-inch S&S Panhead went into the late-model Harley frame without a problem. The only hitch was a minor clearance problem up top, between the Custom Cycle Engineering finned rocker covers and the backbone, but that was easily remedied. The old-style engine/new-style frame went together with a convincing vintage look. The hinged rear fender is right out of the OldBook. Completing the picture, the 1979 square-tubing swingarm was swapped for an earlier, round-tubing version. And how about those saddlebags? They’re vintage Buco. “I found them on eBay,” Tyler says. They were new old-stock and replacing the four reflectors on the back with LED taillights was the only change made. The front end is an early Wide Glide, the front fender came off a Fat Boy and the headlight was made by EMD in France, a cast bucket with a Harley-Davidson lens. “That’s what we rode all the way to California,” Tyler adds. “My brother was with me, my dad, my wife and a couple close friends. Six people and five bikes. It just reminded us all why we’re in the motorcycle business in the first place, why we do what we do.” ■

Quick Kit

Making Oil Changes Fast and Easy

S&S Cycle’s new Quick Change Oil Kits are a turnkey oil change solution. They are available for Twin Cam engines as well as Big Twins and Sportsters with Evolution engines.

T

here is a good chance that a lot of your customers are DIY garage techs when it comes to routine maintenance like oil changes.

Sure, they want your back shop professionals to take over when it comes to projects like hop-up work, motor tear downs and other complicated services, but with a decent set of tools and the right supplies, they’ll take care of that minor — though very important — wrenching and work. After all, taking care of routine maintenance could mean the difference between getting out for a ride or staring at a parked bike. S&S Cycle wants to make sure those customers have what they need for that critical work. That’s why the company now offers an all-in-one-package oil change kit. This turnkey oil change solution includes four quarts of oil and a chrome oil filter so that your customers can get the job done right and get it done quickly. The kit comes in two options — one for Harley-Davidson Twin Cam engines (p/n 3601-0413) and one for Big Twins and Sportsters with Evolution engines (p/n 36010412). Both feature four quarts of S&S Cycle’s premium 20W-50 synthetic motor oil and one of the company’s high quality oil filters.

S&S Cycle’s premium synthetic oil is formulated to keep American V-twins running like new for years. The oil resists extreme heat in large-displacement, air-cooled engines, and the added moly content helps reduce heat, friction and wear. The oil also features enhanced zinc and phosphorous levels for increased engine-wear protection. All of this combines to provide a high level of protection for those hard-working V-twin engines. The oil even meets Harley-Davidson warranty requirements. Your customers should also get a look at those chrome oil filters. The sturdy steel canisters house high-quality filtering media. To ease removal and installation, S&S Cycle makes its canisters slightly smaller in diameter than stock oil filters. The filters are also designed with a direct bypass valve that routes bypass oil directly to the filter exit. This minimizes that amount of contaminants carried to the engine in the unfiltered bypass oil. They are also built to capture smaller particles than the OE filter, but still allow for plenty of oil flow. All of this comes in one easy-to-merchandize and easyto-purchase box that features that familiar S&S Cycle logo and legendary tagline — Proven Performance. ■

According to Esteves Motorcycle Design (EMD) owner Nicolas Pigeyre, France’s Harley-Davidson scene is one of the biggest in Europe. And, Pigeyre should know, since he’s a part of the V-twin scene there with a collection of parts and custom motorcycles. EMD is based in Saint-Chély d’Apcher, a picturesque town in southern France. Pigeyre’s history with EMD dates back 20 years, when he purchased the company. Back then, the name was actually Esteves Mechanical Design, and the company produced airplane and machine parts and did custom welding and milling jobs. In 2011, Pigeyre added the motorcycle component to the company because he was a rider and enthusiast himself. The company started with just a few Twin Cam and Triumph parts, but it quickly grew into a full inventory of options for Harley-Davidsons. The mechanical — and non-motorcycle — part of the company still exists, making everything from small parts to specialized machinery, but Pigeyre has found the perfect blend of his passion and his talent on the motorcycle side of the business. Everything EMD produces is made in-house, with the exception of paint.

Nicolas Pigeyre is the man behind France’s Esteves Motorcycle Design, a manufacturer of classically designed, sleek V-twin parts and accessories now available through Drag Specialties.

EMD has also branched into television; fans can see Pigeyre and his work in the new Discovery Channel show “Sacred Steel Bikes.” EMD’s U.S. market comes by way of The Speed Merchant. The two shops collaborated on an engine cover for a Triumph Bonneville several years ago. Working on the development of that part forged a good relationship, giving Pigeyre confidence in naming The Speed Merchant as his U.S. importer. Drag Specialties is carrying nearly all of EMD’s parts, so customers can choose the French parts for a wide range of Harley models. Pigeyre says that EMD is famous for its Sportster components, although the company’s Twin Cam and EVO parts sales are on the rise. The goal with EMD’s parts is to give a vintage vibe to modern motorcycles. EMD is a prolific producer of covers, including cam covers, primary covers, sprocket covers and rocker covers. The line available through Drag Specialties come in the same three finish options of black, black contrast cut and raw. A ribbed design, inspired by 1942 Flathead cylinder heads, can be found in many of the cover configurations. The ribbed cam cover is made of die-cast aluminum with a CNCmilled gasket surface. Thanks to identical dimensions and tolerances as the OEM parts, the EMD cam covers are easy to install and utilize the OEM mounting hardware. Ribbed rocker covers are manufactured to the same standards and sold by the pair. The XL cam cover for Ironhead Sportsters also has a ribbed design, but this cast aluminum piece fits directly over the

OEM cam cover and is held in place with three included Allen bolts and spacers. The trim can be notched at the upper front to make room for an OEM breather, if needed. The bolt-on Sportster sprocket cover, with two designs that fit 1991-2003 and 2004-up models, complements the ribbed cam covers and offers a “split transmission” look.

EMD’s Sherman rocker covers for all 1999 and up Twin Cam models are designed to have an industrial look. The bolt-on covers, sold by the pair, are also made from die-cast aluminum with CNC-milled gasket surfaces. Sportster rocker covers in a black or raw finish are inspired by the iconic Shovelhead. The smooth surface of the raw covers can be polished for a bit of added shine. EMD’s light housings include two models, the Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Both are available in the three standard finishes. While the Vitamin A design has a smooth housing, the Vitamin C headlight bucket has scalloped edges. Both utilize a standard 5¾-inch incandescent bulb. Wheel covers in 16-inch, 17-inch, and 18-inch sizes add a distinct look by completely covering the existing wheel. Available in black or raw aluminum options, the covers are sold by the pair and will need to be drilled to allow tire valve clearance. The Bombshell 49mm fork shrouds for Twin Cam motorcycles clearly take their design inspiration from their namesake, adding a look that is at once vintage and military. The fork shrouds come in the black, black cut and raw finishes.

EXHAUST

The Performer 2-into-1 Power Pipes Built to Impress

The Performer 2-into-1 is available for a number of Harley-Davidson models, including this set for those popular Touring bikes.

P

erformance-minded riders and savvy tuners know that the benefits of a 2-into-1 exhaust are well documented. These pipes have a flow and scavenging effect that can literally pull the exhaust out of an engine. The performance engineers at MagnaFlow certainly know this and with their aptly named Performer 2-into-1 they’ve taken it all to the next level. Available for Touring-model Harley-Davidsons from 2007 to the 2016 models, and for Softails going back to1986 — there are even Performer 2-into-1s for the Breakouts and Rockers. The exhausts are available in chrome or black finishes. The Performer 2-into-1 is tuned to impress, and in more ways than one. First there’s the performance. Crafted with non-bluing Magna-Black coated stainless steel, the headpipes are engineered with diameters increasing from 1¾ inches at the ports, to 2 inches and then finally to 2¼ inches into the collector. It’s a stepped design proven to deliver optimal torque and horsepower gains through the powerband. The Performer also features a 4-inch muffler body with MagnaFlow’s signature Max-Flow two-step transition core. That combination of louvers and perforation is built to deliver the kind of power and performance you can feel. That muffler and its core create the backpressure needed to maximize torque.

All this performance comes with an amazing tone. There’s a low roar with a great built-motor note when the rider grabs a handful of throttle. MagnaFlow has sonically engineered things here so those decibels drop down nicely at cruising rpms. It’s a tone-combination that can make the Performer 2-into-1 a great choice for the long-haul rider. This is a performance pipe that won’t fatigue the ear mile after mile out on the highway. Your customers can even hear the stereo better, and the passenger whenever riding two-up. The Performer 2-into-1 is also looker. There are 2½-inch full-coverage heat shields with a laser cut junction cover to give the Performer that big, power-pipe appearance that riders want. A channeled, gloss black end cap with a beveled edge adds to the style. ■

MagnaFlow’s Performer 2-into-1 exhaust is a popular choice for riders looking for a boost in performance and styling.

MagnaFlow has found that larger muffler bodies, while maybe looking the part, can allow the exhaust to dump out too much, too fast and actually kill low-end response. The aim here was optimal torque and horsepower gains throughout the powerband, and the stepped-header/ Max-Flow Performer 2-into-1 delivers. There are 12mm and 18mm O2 sensor ports that allow for all the tuning options using either OE or aftermarket wide-band equipment. CAM-CHAIN TENSIONER KITS

Easing the Tension New Cam-Chain Upgrades

There are also new low-resistance roller chains with matching sprockets and alignment spacers, new Timken/ Feuling bearings, all the gaskets, O-rings and ARP assembly hardware to put everything in place and Feuling’s even included the Loctite and moly lube. Notably, rocker-box gaskets are in the kit so the one-piece factory pushrods can be reused. It’s all a direct bolt-in fit and DIY customers with reasonable skills shouldn’t have any problem with the swap. Feuling offers a number of Hydraulic Conversion Kits to cover all the applications. There are packages allowing reuse of the 2000 to 2006 splined camshafts, and there are kits that accept the Reaper Series Conversion Chain-Drive Cams. Feuling’s OE+ Hydraulic Cam-Chain Tensioner Conversion Kit is a bolt-in replacement system for the cam chain tensioners that came as OE in first-generation Twin Cams.

F

euling’s OE+ Hydraulic Cam-Chain Tensioner Conversion Kit is a bolt-in replacement system for the problematic and power robbing springactivated cam chain tensioners that came standard in first-generation Harley-Davidson Twin Cams. The Feuling kit includes everything needed to upgrade those early engines with the spring-loaded tensioner system to the much more efficient and longer lasting 2007 and later hydraulic chain tensioners. It’s brand new, it’ll be in the 2017 FatBook, but it’s already in the Drag Specialties warehouses. For anyone with an early Twin Cam switching to the OE+ Hydraulic Tensioner Kit is a no-brainer. The spring-loaded chain tensioners in those bikes have been a headache from the get-go. First of all they exert so much unnecessary force on the cam chains they’re power robbers, but more importantly all that spring pressure plays havoc on the tensioner rubbing blocks themselves. These plastic parts quickly wear away, crack up or break apart. Those fragments have to go somewhere and it’s nowhere good. It’s for these reasons Harley quickly switched to the newdesign hydraulic tensioners in 2007. The Feuling kit goes one better. The new camplate at the heart of things here is precision-machined billet, as are the chain-tensioner bodies themselves. Everything is tough and flex free. The kit also includes a high-volume Feuling OE+ billet oil pump to supply all the oil those hydraulic tensioners need.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

With the cam chest wide open for the hydraulic conversion, adding a set of Reapers is an obvious move. Performance cams, they feature the ’99 through ’06 inner journals combined with the ’07 and later outer cam journals compatible with that new hydraulic-tensioner camplate. Grinds from .525 to .630 lift are available and those 525s work fine with the stock valve springs. Those billet Cam-Chain Tensioner Assemblies are also available separately for riders looking to upgrade their factory tensioners, and the low-resistance/longerwear Nylon-Teflon tensioner pads themselves are also available separately. These not only fit the Feuling billet housings, they’re direct drop-ins for the factory cast housings, as well. Finally, for anyone piecing together an engine with mixed-and-matched parts whether they’re coming from Feuling, Screamin’ Eagle, Delkron or S&S, there is a universal Hydraulic Tensioner/Chains/Sprocket/Spacer Kit available offering endless combinations. ■

Under Assault!

Custom Performance Air Filters and Risers Trask’s Assault Series Hi-Flow Air Cleaner* provides a nice performance boost over OE and features a clear Plexiglas cover for a unique look.

The Assault Series Handlebar Risers provide a clean, aggressive look and are available in a number of sizes and finishes.

N

ick Trask’s Assault Series custom bikes have all been showstoppers and head turners.

Starting with that First Offense machine and continuing through with the Silver Assault, Second Offense, the Black & Gold, Repeat Offender and Black Assault they’ve all combined Trask’s “Performance Minded – Performance Driven” big-power approach with some of the coolest custom style around. Every one of those bikes was loaded with Trask Performance one-offs, the bits and pieces that make them special. Trask’s new Assault Series product line feature custom parts that give any Harley-Davidson rider some of that same aggressive, yet still refined, Assault Series custombike look. The first two releases are the Assault Series Hi-Flow Air Cleaners* and the Assault Series Handlebar Risers. They’ll be in the 2017 FatBook, but Drag Specialties has them both right now. The new Assault Series Hi-Flow Air Cleaner* features clear Plexiglas covers and a hidden, integrated breather system. It’s a look made to stand out in a crowd and, coming from Trask, the Assault Series Hi-Flow is a performer. First off, every Assault Series Hi-Flow Air Cleaner comes with the new Trask “snap-in” velocity stack. A Nick Trask innovation, this simple, interchangeable velocity stack can be swapped out quickly and easily to accommodate different size throttle bodies. It takes just seconds. Trask’s own dyno testing showed a gain of up to 10 horsepower over OE, and the filtering element behind the clear cover is washable, reusable and easy to maintain. The Assault Series Hi-Flow Air Cleaner is offered in Chrome, Reverse Cut and Raw finishes and it’s available now.

Next up are the Assault Series Handlebar Risers. Taking more styling cues from those Assault Series custom bikes these risers will add a whole new dynamic to both the look and feel of a Harley. They’re clean, aggressive and like the Assault Series Hi-Flow Air Cleaners they’re available in those Chrome, Raw or Reverse Cut finishes. Completing the look Trask has even included polished 12-point stainless steel fasteners to the machined top clamps. Fitments cover both 1-inch and 1¼-inch diameter handlebars, and the risers are available in 2-inch, 4-inch, 6-inch and 8-inch heights. ■

he line of premium high-torque polyurethane synchronous belts from Belt Drives, Ltd. all feature carbon/carbon-fiber cording and they’re available with distinctive top ribbing just like OEM or with a smooth top for a clean look. Application charts cover tooth counts for everything from custom builds to those OE replacements, widths from 1 inch to 1½ inches. Belt replacement doesn’t end with just that premium belt, however. The pulleys, transmission and rear wheel deserve a close look. In fact, Harley-Davidson specifically recommends new pulleys with a new belt. Once again BDL has the replacements. Direct-fits cover all belt-drive Harleys and the pulleys are machined from 6061 T-6 aluminum, and are a perfect fit and match with the belt. As a performance bonus, the transmission pulleys are one-third the weight of OE. Of course, as good as those BDL belts and pulleys are they still need to be correctly installed and maintained. That means no twisting, pinching or prying during installation. It also

That belt can’t rub anywhere, its tension must be properly adjusted and it’s important to recheck tension as a new belt and set of pulleys seat in. BRAKE PADS

Premium Stoppers

Performance Brake Pads for V-Twins Drag Specialties Premium sintered-metal brake pads are made by DP Brakes to provide performance braking power for everything from highly modified bikes to stock V-twins.

But not all sintered metal pads are created equal, so Drag Specialties turned to the sintered-metal specialist, DP Brakes, for its line of brake pads. DP practically wrote the book on sintered metal, and the pads it makes for Drag Specialties are formulated especially for use on Harley-Davidsons. The pads produce no brake dust so whitewall tires and chrome wheels and trim stay clean. They don’t squeal — hot or cold — and are gentle on all non-plated rotors. Both their stopping power and longevity exceed those of OE pads. And, all Drag Specialties sintered-metal brake pads come with an upgraded high-tech ceramic heat barrier on the back plate to stop the heat generated by friction during braking from migrating up into the brake fluid where it can cause brake fade and reduced stopping power.

A

lot of attention is paid to making bikes go faster, but it’s important to remember that the faster a bike goes, the better its brakes need to be. Since stock brakes are designed to cope with stock horsepower, a stronger set of binders is practically mandatory on modified bikes, or those that carry heavy loads. But, even stock bikes ridden solo can benefit from Drag Specialties new Premium sintered-metal brake pads made by DP Brakes. Sintered-metal pads are used by virtually all motorcycle manufacturers for their OE brake pads. There are several reasons, including impressive durability, strong and progressive braking, and excellent performance in the rain and during panic stops, where sintered metal works as well cold as other pads do hot.

50

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

DECEMBER 2016

Your customers don’t have to be riding a high-performance Harley to appreciate the benefits of Drag Specialties Premium sintered-metal replacement brake pads. In almost every scenario where a rider has to brake suddenly to avoid an accident, the pads are cold. Sintered-metal pads are formulated for superior cold-stop performance, and they retain that braking power even when they’re smoking hot. Drag Specialties Premium sintered-metal brake pads have advantages for dealers as well as riders. First, Drag and DP have a long running and close working relationship – since 1998 to be exact. Add that to the outstanding relationship Drag Specialties has with its dealers, and you have a supply chain you can depend on from raw materials to finished products to delivered stock. On top of it all, Drag Specialties Premium brake pads are priced competitively. ■

Brass Beauty

The New Bomber Series

T

he trick to staying on top of custom trends is usually to look forward and try to guess what will be hot in the coming season. There’s another, less common method, though, that’s just as effective, and that’s to look to the past for inspiration. That’s what Carl Brouhard did with his new Bomber Series line, which takes its cue from iconic machinery of a time gone by. The Bomber Series is highlighted by the use of brass buttons as accents. Brouhard got the idea from battleships of the steam era, which were made from massive plates of steel held together by rivets. “I thought it would be cool to mimic those rivets, but with a brass buttonhead screw threaded into the parts,” he said. Those rivets give the Bomber Series its distinctive look.

The new Bomber Series includes points covers, gas tank caps and dash trim that feature stylish brass buttons.

The buttons themselves aren’t structural — brass isn’t know for its strength––but they represent a welcome change from the commonplace, says Brouhard. In order to stand out, Brouhard says he decided to incorporate a different styling element into his products. The buttons are initially polished to a fine finish, but that leaves them looking a little too flashy, so next they’re wire brushed to give them a more satiny finish. Next, a coat of clear lacquer is applied to protect the buttons from wear. Finally, they’re threaded by hand into the part and secured with a drop of Loctite. “It’ a fairly time-consuming process,” Brouhard says, “but it’s a unique look.” In the event boots or some other kind of contact wears down the buttons, they’re available separately. The Bomber driver floorboards are made of 6061 billet aluminum and measure 17 inches x 5 inches. They come with rubber inserts for added, grip, and they’re accented by brass buttons for an industrial look. They come in chrome or black and fit 1986-and-later FLST/FLSTF/FLSTN models, 1994-and-later Road Kings, and 1980 FLT/FLHT/ FLHS models.

For the Bomber Series, Carl Brouhard incorporated brass buttons to give products like floorboards and shifter and brake arms a unique, mechanical look.

Complementing the front floorboards are Bomber Series passenger floorboards. Available for the same applications as the front floorboards, they also feature brass buttons and rubber inserts, and measure 115/8 inches x 3½ inches. These rear floorboards use the stock mounts. Both floorboards are designed to complement other foot-control products in the Bomber Series, such as shifters, including heel-toe shifters, toe shifters, and inner linkage, as well as brake arms. ■

he 2017 FatBook isn’t out yet, but just because that giant catalog isn’t in your hands doesn’t mean your customers can’t get their hands on what’ll be inside right away.

Take the whole assortment of new products from Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation for example. Set for inclusion in the 2017 FatBook are a new line of bagger exhausts, redesigned late-model applications for those popular OEM Monkey Bars, turn-signal replacements for Road Glides, fairing flares, raked headlight nacelles, and a new touchless tie-down system to make trailering or transporting a bike more safe. Drag Specialties already has all of this in the warehouses.

The Wing-It Fairing Flares are pressure-formed urethane parts that will add a cool accent on the lower edge of the fairing. There are also those new turn signals for the Road Glides, too, versions for the 2013 and earlier bikes, and for the 2015 and later models. The new Bagger Nation Raked Nacelle will solve a lot of problems, what with the popularity of big wheels and raked front ends. Available for Road King (two versions cover all the bikes from 2009 to present), the Raked Nacelle points the headlight down the road instead of up into the tree line. It adds some killer styling, too. ■

The new Bagger Nation exhaust line is the Cult 45 Collection*, headlined with a new 2-into-1 Collector with a SpeedFreak tip. It’s a custom stunner available in black or chrome for all the 2007 to 2016 Touring models. A short, radical kick-out design and a ferocious roar are just the start here. There are stylized full-coverage head shields, tastefully engraved Bagger Nation emblems and it all works with stock or extended saddlebags.

The Cult 45 Collection* continues with a full lineup of slip-ons — 4-inch mufflers also available with a choice of black or chrome finishes. arley-Davidson designed its “assist and slip” clutch option to provide 40 percent more clamping force and a 30 percent lighter pull at the lever for its 110 engine in 2013 and later CVO models.
