Together we ride Go Ahead!

Farewell to a Friend

My customers are my friends, which is why it’s so hard to report it when one passes away. On July 23rd, we lost Ken Boyko. Most people today would have known Ken from his years at Cobra USA. He was in the business a lot longer than that, though, having worked his whole adult life in some aspect of motorcycling.

He and Tim McCool started Cobra in 1977, making a variety of different exhausts. Then in the 1980s, the plain looking UJMs (Universal Japanese Motorcycles) were big sellers. Ken commissioned a talented builder named Denny Berg to build the first “Metric Cruiser.” Most people didn’t know it at the time, but Cobra had just created a whole new market segment.

In 1993, Fred Fox and I worked out the details to begin publishing Parts Magazine and Drag Specialties Magazine. That was when I started making presentations about the new magazine, and one of my first was to Ken. He loved the idea and gave his immediate approval for Cobra to become an advertiser.

He didn’t just run ads with us, though. For many years Ken and the team at Cobra would build new custom Metric cruisers and we’d have the full magazine story ready for their unveiling at the annual Cincinnati and later, Indianapolis, dealer shows.

About ten years ago, Ken went through some health issues that ultimately resulted in him needing a heart transplant. He had a first-class medical team that performed the successful operation, and Ken had been under their watch ever since. He retired from Cobra, but the company has carried on and continues to be a leading manufacturer of high-end exhaust and cruiser products for V-twins and Metric Cruisers.

And, 31 years after Ken gave me the green light for Cobra to join our cover sponsor program, I’m proud and appreciative that Cobra is on the front cover of this month’s issue. Godspeed old friend. ■

“Earlier this year, the boards assembled a search committee to identify a leader for all four associations. I would like to thank the internal teams for their patience through this search process. This comprehensive process enabled us to connect with many qualified candidates and ultimately find that Christy is the best person to lead the organizations and its talents to seize opportunities and work through challenges with success,” said Marc-Andre Deschenes, Chair of the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America.

“I want to thank Scott Schloegel and Diana Sanchez for assuming the additional responsibility of leading these associations while we conducted this extensive search process. Despite already having enormous workloads, Scott and Diana graciously and deftly led the staff through this time of tremendous change while achieving some remarkable results,” said Ryan Stiver, Chair of the Recreational OffHighway Vehicle Association. “Scott and Diana have ensured these associations will have a seamless transition for Christy to take us into the next chapter.”

LaCurelle started with the Associations at the beginning of September.

Correction About Hotop/ Fred Fox FXR

There is a correction regarding a photo that ran on the bottom of page 15 of the August 2024 issue (#7) in the story about the Black Hills Motorcycle Show.

The caption for the bottom photo erroneously named Maverick Hites as the builder of the bike that won Best in Show at the event in May. That custom Pro Street FXR was built by none other than the late-Don Hotop of Don’s Speed and Custom in 2005/2006 as a special surprise gift for the late-LeMans Corporation Chairman and Founder and Drag Specialties owner, Fred Fox.

At the time, Fred was riding around on a mostly stock 1991 FXLR and the team at Drag Specialties thought the head of the company needed something a bit more custom. So, with Tom Motzko in the lead, and with the late-Jeff Fox’s blessing, they orchestrated the build with Hotop and presented it to Fred in a surprise event at the Janesville, Wisconsin warehouse during the 2006 NVP.

Maverick purchased the custom from Drag Specialties in 2021 with the original 112 miles on it that Fred put on the bike. Maverick recounts how he drove from his home in Spearfish, South Dakota to Janesville in a snowstorm to pick it up. “I risked life and limb to get that bike,” he says with a laugh. Since then, Maverick says he’s simply been the bike’s “curator” leaving it mostly original except for some new grips, pegs and exhaust.

“I’m not really the owner of this bike, I’m just the curator,” Maverick recounts saying when he won the Best in Show award. “It’s my bike to take care of until the next person comes along. Really, Don Hotop is the creator of this bike.”

And, the next owners of this bike are already in the business, his sons Thayne (24) and Keegan (21), which whom Maverick runs Mav Bilt Customs in Mesa, Arizona. He plans on passing on the family heirloom to them, as the next “curators.”

While the three all work full-time jobs, the shop lets them indulge their passion for motorcycles and building custom V-Twins. Maverick, 54, himself has been a motorcycle fanatic since getting his first street bike at age 15, and was inducted into the Hamsters USA® Organization back in 2021.

detailing the genesis of the bike. However, don’t think it’s simply a showpiece, that Hotop bike is a runner and after getting some engine concerns sorted, Maverick says it’ll be back on the road as a daily rider. “That thing runs like a Cadillac,” he adds.

Battle of the Bagger Titans

IT’S WYMAN VS HERFOSS

Two rounds and four races remain in the 2024 Mission King of the Baggers Championship after the MotoAmerica series’ first visit to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 10 years. This means that whoever prevails between Harley-Davidson Factory Racing’s Kyle Wyman and S&S Cycle/Indian Motorcycle’s Troy Herfoss, they’re going to have to earn it. There’s no sitting back and letting things fall where they may.

Wyman has the lead in the standings but with four races and 100 points up for grabs, he can’t just finish second to his Australian rival, Herfoss. Herfoss is 14 points down, and he knows if he beats Wyman in the races, he will beat him in

the championship. Thus, both men are in the same situation. They have to set out to win races.

The battle is down to those two, as defending series champion Hayden Gillim and his RevZilla/Motul/Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Road Glide is now 93 points adrift and highly unlikely to claw back from that big of a deficit. Instead, he’s got a fight on his hands for third in the series standings as Herfoss’ teammate Tyler O’Hara is just seven points behind Gillim.

The next four races will be pressure-packed as Wyman holds the keys to a Harley title while Herfoss is in the same role for Indian –and there’s definitely no love lost between the two factories.

The chase is tight because both Wyman and Herfoss have been impressive. Wyman has won six races to Herfoss’ five, and Wyman has 11 podiums to Herfoss’ 10. Both have scored points in every single race, and both have scorecards that feature a couple of rough outings.

The pair split wins in the most recent round at Mid-Ohio. Herfoss took the win in race one, but a red flag cost him a chance of a late-race attack on Wyman in race two and the latter was declared the winner. Neither rider finished that one very happy. It’s not the way you want to win a race and it’s definitely not the way you want to lose one.

The rider who finished third in the two races in the return to Mid-Ohio was Rocco Landers on the second RevZilla/Motul/ Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. It was the class rookie’s fifth podium in the past six races and the “kid” is now a factor and could somehow play a role in the championship.

The other riders who could spoil things for one of the two top men are Gillim, who has won three races, O’Hara, and Wyman’s teammate James Rispoli, who has slipped down the standings after an ‘un-Rispoli’ type of season thus far. All four of those riders are capable of race wins and all of them will be going all-in in the remaining rounds at Circuit of The Americas and the finale at New Jersey Motorsports Park. ■

» Be sure to tune and witness the battle for the KOTB crown.

Harley-Davidson Factory Racing’s Kyle Wyman after his victory in race 2 at Mid-Ohio that put him in the points lead. With 100 points up for grabs and four races left, the 2021 KOTB Champion is in a battle with S&S Cycle/Indian rider Troy Herfoss for the championship. Brian J. Nelson photo

EXCLUSIVE TRAINING FOR DRAG DEALERS

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA – JUNE 18, 2024

Drag Specialties gathered a group of its Midwest dealers together along with a selection of vendor product specialists in late June for a night of learning and production education. The Oklahoma City stop of the Drag Specialties Dealer Training Tour had come to town

As part of the 2024 multi-city tour across the United States, the training tour and its curated lineup of popular vendors had set up shop at Anthem Brewing, treating the attending dealers to a night of food, refreshments, camaraderie and learning. Also on hand was the Drag Specialties events truck and its beautiful collection of FatBook and OldBook bikes.

The evening included many dealers who had not previously attended one of these meetings. The region’s Drag rep Jon Olson was thrilled to see so many dealers attend. New dealers, Santa Fe Customs and Cody’s Custom Cycles and Performance, came with a desire to learn. “I’m ready to learn about all of these products directly from the company representatives,” said Gloria Woolery of Santa Fe Customs. None were disappointed after the presentations from the vendors showcasing their products and brands on this leg

of the tour – Alpinestars, Arlen Ness, Klock Werks, Metzeler/ Pirelli, Vance & Hines, and Yuasa Batteries.

The speaker line up started with Yuasa Batteries and the company’s made-in-the-USA range of batteries that are shipped fully charged directly to the dealers ready to ride at the first turn of the ignition. Yuasa offers three GYZ models that cover all Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Those batteries deliver increased AMP hours, high CCA ratings and are maintenance-free AGM with built-in brass mounts for additional accessory support.

Next up was Klock Werks with a presentation about its popular Flare windshields, which are designed to move air away from the rider to minimize turbulence for a smoother ride. The company showcased the new sizes offered for the Harley-Davidson Road Glide, Street Glide, and Indian Challenger. The presentation also offered a hands-on example of the iOmount Phone Mounts and Essentials Kit Collection. Metzeler/Pirelli representatives were on hand with a discussion about the Pirelli Night Dragon multi-directional tire for increased grip, as well as the Metzeler ME888 Marathon front tire fitments. Dealers also learned about the Cruisetec,

which comes in 38 sizes and is designed for aggressive performance riding.

ABOVE: Dealers enjoyed a night of refreshments, food and in-depth product education. Vendors presented great details, features and benefits for a whole host of apparel, parts and accessories.

LEFT: Parts Unlimited RSM Nathan Moore was on hand to assist with the assembled Drag dealers during the presentation. It was a role that included modeling Alpinestars Tech-Air 3 leather vest to demonstrate how the airbag equipped apparel works.

Participating dealers also enjoyed the show-and-tell style presentation by Arlen Ness. While explaining the technology, installation and usage of their hand grips, mid controls, carbon fiber fenders and more, the parts were being passed around the room. The education continued later in the night outside with the Drag Specialties customs on hand where dealers could see the products fit on some of the bikes.

The Drag Specialties Training Tour stops are always a great time for product education, but also bring dealers together in a relaxed atmosphere outside their busy stores. The group posed for a group photo before heading out for the night. Attending that night were staff from Freedom Cycles, Fort Thunder Harley-Davidson, HarleyDavidson World, Iron Nation Harley-Davidson, Loudenback, Mustang Motorcycle and Machine, Myers Duren Harley-Davidson, Par’s Custom Cycle, R&B Cycles, Route 66 Cyclewerx, and Santa Fe Customs.

The Alpinestars presentation really popped as the company demonstrated its Alpinestars Tech-Air airbag system. The group enjoyed a demonstration of the deployment of a Tech-Air System leather vest that was well fitting and quality leather. This product comes in several styles including a leather and canvas vest, undergarment style and jackets.

Vance & Hines brought 40 years of experience of designing and manufacturing great sounding exhaust systems and performance parts. A highlight of their newest products included

2024 Bagger Racing League Update

COUNTDOWN TO THE FINALE

When we last left the Bagger Racing League, the hardcharging V-Twin racing series had just settled Rounds 1 and 2 where a range of riders took to the track in the quest for Performance Bagger and V-Twin victory.

In the time since, the series has held its first international race at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, hosted the AMA Pro-Stock Bagger Championship during AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, and presented Rounds 3 and 4 of its popular Battle of the Baggers.

Each BRL event showcased the grassroots racing series as a popular venue for riders of all levels and with sponsorships ranging from local dealerships to large aftermarket companies. All of them delivered an unforgettable experience for both spectators and participating riders with a unique blend of speed, technical prowess, and raw adrenaline.

Here’s a roundup of all the hot racing action.

The Bagger Racing League electrified fans with the kickoff of Rounds 3 and 4 of the Drag Specialties Battle of the Baggers at Gingerman Raceway in South Haven, Michigan, on June 29th and 30th. The event was filled with excitement and intense competition, showcasing the pinnacle of bagger motorcycle racing.

The action began on Friday with practice sessions where riders set blistering lap times. New racers honed their skills in the racing school, ensuring a competitive edge for the weekend’s races. The weekend festivities started with a vibrant kickoff party at Black River Tavern on Lake Michigan, bringing together fans, racers, and team members in a celebratory atmosphere.

Saturday and Sunday featured superb racing with American V-Twins battling it out on the track. In the Air-Cooled Twins and Zipper’s Performance American Twins Unlimited class, Anthony Bangma dominated on his Buell motorcycle. Up on

2024 AMA PRO-STOCK BAGGER CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2024 AMA Pro-Stock Bagger Championship took place at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course during the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days in late July. The weekend was filled with excitement as fans marveled at the hand-crafted race machines on display in the paddock, setting the stage for a thrilling competition.

The event kicked off on Friday with racers hitting the course for practice sessions before enjoying the entertainment options available at Vintage Motorcycle Days. The excitement continued on Saturday morning with a competitive qualifying session, where Cody Gilmore secured the pole position, setting the tone for the highly anticipated race.

As the clock approached 4:30 PM, the roar of V-Twin American horsepower filled the air, signaling the start of the main event. Cody Gilmore, riding for Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson/Bridgestone, took an early lead, followed closely by former champion Arnie Wells and Australian contender Jake Masters.

After six intense laps, Gilmore emerged victorious, winning the 2024 AMA Pro-Stock Bagger Championship title. Wells put in a strong performance to secure second place, while Jake Masters, a rising star from Australia, finished third and established himself as a formidable competitor for the next season. ■

HIGHLY FUNCTIONAL ACCESSORIES AND EXHAUSTS ANYTHING’S POSSIBLE

Looking at the smoldering ashes of his father’s garage, a young Tim McCool realized it was time he moved his fledgling business to a new location. His father, having just recently rebuilt the garage from an earlier incendiary incident, concurred.

Those early days of making exhausts for his own race bikes and for the local SoCal hot shoes in the late 1970s and early 1980s, soon blossomed into a company called T&M Engineering. That small endeavor laid the foundation for what would become Cobra Engineering, a company that has been making motorcycle exhausts and accessories for more than 50 years.

Cobra manufactures its products in the company’s Yorba Linda, California headquarters. President McCool had this bespoke facility constructed for the sole purpose of manufacturing motorcycle parts. When completed back in 2002, it looked more like a large design studio rather than an industrial plant, yet it remains an efficient and spotless factory. It is a showcase of, and testament to, the company’s manufacturing expertise that is reflected in every product the company makes.

Nowadays, when people think of Cobra, they immediately might think, “Oh yeah, Neighbor Haters®,” and that would be a reasonable connection to make. But though the Neighbor Hater *(EMIS Code 4) lineup of slip-on mufflers is certainly one of the more popular slip-ons in the V-Twin aftermarket, they are far from being the only great product that Cobra produces. In fact, Cobra has an extremely broad range of product offerings for V-Twin motorcycles. It is that broad and deep line of compliant exhausts and functional accessories that has propelled Cobra’s success over the long haul.

Clearly it is the extensive exhaust line up that gets the most attention. Currently Cobra offers more than 40 different 50-state legal slip-on mufflers for V-Twin fitments, for Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycles. And, it offers more than 15 emissions compliant air intakes as well. Of

Cobra Corporate Headquarters in Yorba Linda, California.
The last version of the Gen2 NH is this black upper cut offering. It is the perfect call for bikes with extended bags because the 4½-inch size fills in that gap perfectly. The deep tones provide a great rumble at touring speeds.

those, the Neighbor Haters line up has been the most popular, especially the Gen2 *(EMIS Code 4) lineup.

These Gen2 models are the latest versions of the NH slip-ons. They are updated to include louvered cores for increased back pressure in more powerful engine builds. You can easily identify the Gen2 versions by their black aluminum tips with dual contrasting grooves. The Gen2s in a 4-inch or 4½-inch version are not quite as loud as the original, but both feature a deeper rumble that riders of the newer Milwaukee-Eight bikes seem to prefer.

Perhaps the best news is the original Neighbor Haters are still a very popular option, especially within the Trike community. The 4½-inch tip on the original NH fills in the exhaust cutouts on the Trike, and the slip-ons can be positioned fore and aft so that the end comes right to the end of the bodywork for a clean look. Or they can be positioned a bit more rearward to line up under the bumper if the rider prefers to see a bit more of the muffler. The exhausts come with a limited lifetime Warranty, the same Warranty that the company has had in place since 2005.

When it comes to Cobra’s V-Twin accessory product line up, Cobra offers something from the front of the bike to

the rear. The selection of freeway bars is a good example of Cobras offerings. Cobra makes a traditional hoop style bar for Bagger and Softail fitments, but also includes a more aggressive V-bar as well for those models as well as for Sportsters and Dynas. For Street Glides and Road King models, Cobra has a classy case guard for riders who prefer a more minimalist approach to foot protection.

To assist with passenger comfort and to increase the ability to pack more for longer trips on Baggers, Cobra manufactures two backrests, a short one with a small pad and a tall version with a larger pad. A couple of racks allow riders to select the size and shape to fit their specific riding requirements. For Dyna, Softail and Sporty riders the selection is made easier because everything needed comes in one box; mounting hardware, side plates, and bar and pad are included with each part number. All these are available in a chrome or gloss black finish.

Whether it’s the exhaust line or functional accessories, Cobra endeavors to ensure its products fit properly and the person doing the installs has everything they need to complete the job. Precision engineering enables a high-quality fit and finish that your customers will love, and the breadth of the product line up provides something for every rider. ■

Tires for Any Adventure Pan America Options for All Terrains

One of the best things about the HarleyDavidson Pan America is that it allows riders to choose their own adventure, whether that means sticking to the streets or getting off-road. Metzeler knows Pan America riders need the right tire choices to go with their style of riding. The Karoo Street tire is ideal for riders who primarily favor paved roads, while the Karoo 4 tire is a 50/50 option for those who want an even mix of both on-road and offroad riding.

Metzeler calls the Karoo Street tire an off-road tire with on-road performance. Designed for 75 percent on-road and 25 percent off-road riding, this tire has the wet performance, stability and longevity necessary for street riding. At the same time, it is designed to provide traction and stability on dirt roads and hard-packed terrain.

The compound of the Karoo Street tire is high in silica, which aids in wet-weather grip. The extra-large central blocks help with on-road stability, while the longitudinal grooves built into those blocks efficiently evacuate water. When riding off-road, those same grooves aid in self-cleaning to keep mud and dirt from sticking to the tires.

The tread design of the Karoo Street tire is also adept at providing a consistent contact patch in all riding conditions, whether that’s tackling a fire road or carving corners on the street.

Rider comfort has been factored into the design of the Karoo Street, too. The multi-pitch knob layout reduces contact vibrations for a smoother ride and better wear uniformity. The profile also has a dampening effect while aiding in predictable turn-in and handling.

For riders who want to split their time evenly between riding on-road and off-road, the Karoo 4 tire has excellent features for both options. The scoop-shaped blocks maximize traction on softer surfaces, like sand, while the knob layout is ideal for hard pack. The knob design also fosters self-cleaning, another big benefit when riding off-road.

The Karoo 4 rear tire has a dual compound, which helps blend longevity and grip on the corners during onroad riding. The tire carcass also has a stiffer structure, and multi-radius profiles for the front and rear further enhance cornering grip. At the same time, the tire’s rubber

formulation is resistant to abrasion, making it tough enough for off-road riding.

Additionally, the Karoo 4 is designed to perform well even in wet and cold weather. The tire’s tread design and profile shape make sure things stay stable and predictable in the wet, and since the tire is designed to work with ABS, emergency braking is smoother, as well.

In all, the team at Metzeler has deftly balanced on-road and off-road capabilities with the Karoo 4 tire. ■

The Latest Buzz New, Innovative Seat Styles

Launching a new product at Sturgis is a great way to get immediate feedback about it. When Saddlemen unveiled seats with its new Honeycomb stitch pattern at the rally, those products were the first to sell out.

That, says Saddlemen Vice-President Rob Schlueter, isn’t something that typically happens with a brand-new option. Customers have their favorite seat and stitch styles already, so it can take a while for a new variant to get traction. The fact the Honeycomb stitch was an immediate hit says a lot about how popular it’s going to be with riders outside of Sturgis, too.

“It shows our customers continue to look to Saddlemen for what’s new and what’s next,” Rob says. The honeycomb style is gaining popularity in the V-Twin segment on the West Coast, most notably in custom paint jobs and carbon fiber elements. So, the team at Saddlemen figured adding a Honeycomb stitch pattern for seats was the logical next step.

Saddlemen launched its new Honeycomb stitch pattern at the recent Sturgis Rally and by all accounts, it was a blowout success. The seats with the new design treatment were the first to sell out says company VP Rob Schlueter.

Rob believes the honeycomb look is rising in popularity because of the design elements of the motorcycles themselves. The honeycomb style, he says, “does reflect a lot of the more contemporary design elements we’re finding in motorcycles. They’ve become sharper in their geometry over time.”

At the same time, the Honeycomb stitch is also a bold look for a seat, and riders love having a bike that stands out from the rest. With a Saddlemen seat, a rider can pick from a variety of seat styles, finishes, stitch patterns and even stitch colors. That kind of versatility means that even in a crowd the size of Sturgis, a rider can still have a bike that’s one of a kind.

Saddlemen is currently offering the Honeycomb stitch for all of its most popular seat models. There are also coordinating sissy bar pads and Tour-Pak pads so riders can have that matching look.

The extensive range of seat styles and fitments available with the Honeycomb stitch is remarkable, but it’s not all that surprising coming from Saddlemen. The company knows its riders want a wide range of options so they can get the exact look they want for their V-Twin. Riders also get to choose what color stitching they want for their Saddlemen seat with the Honeycomb stitch. Currently, it is offered in black, gold, orange, red, and blue.

Riders who want the ultimate chance to customize the look of their Saddlemen seat can opt for the Saddlemen custom seat program. The program is designed to give dealers an easy, efficient way to offer their customers a truly unique seat. It all starts with a form – the dealer chooses the form for the seat style being customized, fills it out according to the customer’s wishes and submits it to their Drag Specialties rep like any other order. From there, Drag passes the custom seat request on to Saddlemen, who provide the dealer with a price before building the seat and shipping it directly to the dealer. That’s really all there is to it.

The Honeycomb stitch is yet another way Saddlemen continues to develop and innovate. The company has even explored what’s possible for seat finishes with options like Carbon Fiber and Extreme Gripper, which is designed to give freestyle riders maximum traction.

And that product development isn’t limited to seats. Saddlemen released the S-RT mini fairing earlier this year. Similar to the full-size FXRT fairing, the S-RT mini fairing gives riders wind protection to cut down on turbulence, while staying nice and trim so it looks proportional when mounted on cruiser and sport models. The fairing is made from injection-molded ABS for a pristine finish and a flawless fit on the bike.

One of the most important innovations in Saddlemen products can’t even be seen, but it can certainly be felt. The company’s unique progressive density ProFoam and SaddleGel are at the heart of Saddlemen seats.

ProFoam finds the right balance between support and compliance by combining foam made of varied cell sizes and types. It is all held in place by a skin that resists outside elements and seals the foam from water.

SaddleGel is part of Saddlemen’s Gel-Core Technology, which is engineered to dampen, divert and deflect energy from the road. SaddleGel and ProFoam combine to allow a seat to conform to the rider’s body, reducing pressure points and eliminating the “hot spots” that cause discomfort.

Saddlemen is always coming out with new product designs and options, and, right now, the Honeycomb stitch is the latest exciting thing. Just ask all those riders at Sturgis who bought every single seat featuring the new stitch. ■

Show-Worthy Tires

Built to Perform and Look Great

There is always a lot of anticipation leading up to Sturgis, but for Roy Martin of Roys Toys Customs, there was also a lot of work to be done before the annual rally. He wrapped up a new custom build that debuted at this year’s Buffalo Chip, treating the attendees to one of his signature bikes. And, as usual, that bike was fitted with Cobra Chrome tires from Avon.

Roy got his start in the hot rod scene, but eventually, building cars gave way to building motorcycles. His first custom bike build was a 1994 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail.

That was about 30 years ago, and since then, Roy has continued to make a name for himself in the custom bike world. One of the things he enjoys the most about building bikes rather than cars is that you see every detail, right down to the motor. There is no chance of hiding things underneath a hood. And, although he’s not building cars anymore, Roy still loves that hot rod aesthetic. The tires, of course, are a part of that overall look, and for years, Roy has chosen to use Avon Cobra Chrome tires. Not only is the look of the tire right, but the variety of sizes makes them a natural choice for virtually any build. The Softail that just made its debut at Sturgis has a 280 rear on it and introduces Roy’s new B-Hives custom bolt covers. Another custom Roy built has a 17-inch 330. Both bikes roll on Cobra Chrome tires.

Not only do Avon Cobra Chrome tires give Roy the look and style he wants for his custom bikes, they also provide the performance required as all his bikes are meant to be ridden.

“Avon’s tires, with the styling and the sizes, [have] been our number one choice for customs,” Roy says. Quality is an important factor, too. “When you’re building high-end customs, you can’t skimp on the brand of tires.”

One of the reasons Roy appreciates tire quality is because his bikes are all meant to be ridden. He figures there’s no point building something that can’t be taken out on the road.

Leading up to Sturgis, Roy was doing a lot of riding on a custom 2008 Road King. The slammed bike features Cobra Chrome tires, and it’s made to turn eyes with candy apple red paint.

Another way to judge the quality of a tire is in how easily they mount. As Roy says, “If you spend $5K getting a set of wheels made, you don’t want to be battling to put a tire on there.”

In all, Roy says Avon offers builders everything they’re looking for with Cobra Chrome tires – form, function and fitment.

As it turns out, building great custom bikes runs in the family; earlier in the summer, Roy’s daughter Nikki took home Best Chopper honors for a bike she built. The show in Black Hills, South Dakota, was a warmup for the Sturgis festivities. It’s been a good summer for Roy and Roys Toys Customs. ■

Lightstrike! Custom Taillights for

Harley-Davidsons

Harley-Davidson riders love those customized bits that are truly unique; the ones that other enthusiasts spot with a knowing smile and a nod. Sure, those in the know can walk up to a bike and spot what isn’t stock during the day, but what about at night? Lights are the striking factor that riders embrace to make their bike stand out after dusk.

When it comes to customizing the lighting on a range of Harley-Davidson models, Ciro is a one-stop shop for high-quality LED accessories. With Ciro’s products, your customers’ machines will really pop when the sun goes down.

Standing out amongst Ciro’s lighting offerings is its Lightstrike™ lighting technology. This technology engages multiple LEDs to illuminate a variety of programmable animations, all powered by Ciro’s Lightstrike app that is downloadable on your customers’ smartphones.

A perfect showcase of this lighting technology is the Armor taillight from Ciro. This taillight is programmable to display multiple different brake and startup animations, including strobe functionality for braking. Choosing and programming animations is made easy for customers with the app, meaning they can swiftly switch things when they want something a bit different for the next night cruise.

Outside of its unique Lightstrike feature, the Armor taillight brings with it a host of features to make it an all-around improvement over stock rear taillights. Riders have the choice of a red or light smoke lens constructed of high-strength polycarbonate material. Each of these options also comes with both a chrome or gloss black accent bar across the center of the light, accentuating the look and flow of the back of the bike. Even with the lights off, your customers can easily complement the look of their custom machine.

Armor taillights are designed to directly replace the OEM unit on most Harley models with fitment ranging back to 1999 and all the way up to current 2024 models. Plus, plugand-play functionality makes for a headache-free install.

Ciro is dedicated to quality, ensuring that all Armor taillights meet and exceed DOT and ECE on-road specifications. All of this is backed by Ciro’s three-year / LED limited lifetime warranty. Yet, Ciro takes it beyond just product quality. Something your customers can surely appreciate is Ciro’s product technical support, including a step-by-step install and setup video for the Armor taillights. ■

Comfort Accessories for Touring Bikes Ride, Relax, Repeat

Comfort and control are key ingredients for a more confident and enjoyable ride. Including the 2024 lineup, Harley-Davidson continues to bring riders incredible motorcycles with more features and refinements than the last, but there’s always room for improvement.

Designed to work as a comprehensive group of products to boost rider comfort and overall style, Ciro is proud to introduce the all-new Chicane™ line. The Chicane family of rider comfort accessories includes grips, throttle wings, footrests, shift pegs, foot brake pads, driver floorboards, and passenger floorboard inserts. Each product in this line features timeless style with options to upgrade everything from brandnew bikes to older models, complementing almost any look with chrome and gloss black finish options.

Besides the seat, a motorcycle’s grips, floorboards and all hand and foot controls are the points in which riders are in constant and direct connection with their machine. These areas can directly affect the riding experience, which is why Ciro paid careful attention to the design and construction of all aspects of its Chicane line.

To get a handle on the Chicane line, first we’ll look at Chicane grips. These grips feature an ergonomical, insulated design that is shaped naturally with riders’ hands and absorbs vibration. This helps to drastically reduce hand and arm fatigue during longer rides. Plus, Chicane grips are ready to accept an optional throttle wing, further enhancing comfort with a form of manual cruise control.

Moving from hands to boots, Chicane floorboards boast a modern style with sturdy aluminum construction, and an EPDM rubber-coated top. Between the material and the grooved design, floorboard traction under riders’ boots is greatly improved for a confidence inspiring ride. Combined with six-position adjustable functionality, Chicane floorboards deliver as much comfort as they do style.

A great complement to the floorboards, Ciro took cruising comfort a step further with Chicane footrests. Designed to mount to any standard Harley ½-inch peg receiver, Chicane footrests use the same durable materials and functional design to maximize riders’ position options on the bike.

A line of Chicane floorboards and footrests wouldn’t be complete without a matching foot brake pad and shifter peg. Chicane brake pads and shifter pegs are a simple and quick way to complete the look and function of riders’ new Chicane-equipped foot controls. Plus, they have the option of standard or extended length shifter pegs with Chicane for a more positive shift feel.

be adjusted to six different positions and

Ciro also offers matching Chicane foot brake pads and shifter pegs. These really help complete the suite of Chicane products, and offer great functionality.

Out of all these benefits, perhaps the best trait of the Chicane collection of rider comfort accessories is that these products cover a wide range of customers, fitting 2006 – 2024 Harley Touring bikes. Chicane even includes matching passenger floorboards for Ultra models. ■

Looking to the Future

Honoring a Legacy While Forging New Territory

The legacy of Darryl Bassani lives on at Bassani Xhaust. Losing the iconic exhaust builder in February of this year was a blow to the entire motorcycle industry, but the company he created, and the unbridled enthusiasm he brought out in his customers is still going strong.

In fact, Bassani Xhaust has been honoring Darryl’s legacy this summer while breaking new ground at the same time. From the streets of Southern California to Sturgis, the team at Bassani has been busy.

A memorial ride is a standard way to honor someone, but the Ride for Darryl was anything but standard. Local stunt riders Jason Pullen and Samoan Bruce led a group that was every bit as spirited as you would expect anything honoring Darryl to be. Darryl always loved stunt riding and supporting riders in the scene, so the ride was the perfect way to pay tribute.

Bassani Marketing and Sales Manager Gary Naito wanted to keep the party going, so the company also hosted a Fourth of July party at the Bassani shop in Anaheim, California. In addition to a fantastic show by the Bassani stunt team, there was a skateboard crew, a band, vendors, a bike show, a bikini contest and the Wall of Death. In other words, no matter what kind of excitement riders were looking for, they could find it at the party. There were also a lot of prizes on hand to make the whole thing even sweeter.

There is no doubt the Fourth of July party would have had Darryl’s stamp of approval. He was always a fan of hosting events at the Bassani headquarters, especially when there was mini racing happening inside the building.

Of course, summertime at Bassani Xhaust has included a lot more than just rides and parties. The team there came together for the most comprehensive Sturgis setup they have ever had. Not only could riders check out the full line of Bassani exhausts, but they could also buy one and have it installed right away. Once the new Bassani exhaust was on the customer’s bike, the next stop was J&P Cycles, where the bike was Dyno tuned to make sure the engine was producing maximum power with the exhaust.

Bassani’s new showroom display also made its debut at Sturgis. This vertical display is a great way to show off Bassani exhausts without taking up a lot of floor space, and the Bassani logo is very eye-catching. Talk with your Drag rep about getting a display for your showroom.

We think Darryl would love it all. ■

Dynamic Upsells

Bundling Lighting Upgrades with Regular Service

Making upgrades to a V-Twin doesn’t have to be expensive, and it doesn’t need to take a lot of time. Custom Dynamics has a range of lighting products that are easy upsells, coming in around $250 or less. To make the deal even sweeter for the customer, many of these upgrades can be done while their bike is in for service, so the installation is easy and convenient.

By installing Custom Dynamics products, a bike gets a boost in both safety and style. The lights add a sleek, modern look to the bike, while also making it more visible to others on the road. Plus, most Custom Dynamics products are DOT compliant and have the company’s Lifetime Warranty.

Of course, these upgrades aren’t just a benefit for the customer. Dealers enjoy the additional sales as well as a chance to build customer loyalty and trust by helping their customers to affordably and conveniently complete a bike’s look.

Front and rear turn signals, like ProBEAM Dynamic Ringz, are a quick upgrade from traditional to LED signals. They

add a clean, modern look with a simple plug-and-play design. If a bike is in for service, it’s easy to suggest an upgrade in turn signals that can be done while the bike is in the service bay.

For bikes with center taillights, those LED turn signals can be paired with something like the Tribar Taillight from Custom Dynamics. That gives the taillight the same brilliance as the turn signals, making everything look cohesive and increasing visibility in the rear.

And, for Touring models, ProBEAM Fillerz add even more illumination with 9 light pipes inside the oval cutout for the fender supports. They provide a full-contrast turn signal or turn/brake lighting for even more visibility.

Custom Dynamics also makes saddlebag lights, which consist of LED light pipes that provide a big pop of light as well as an ultra-modern look. This is a great way to amp up the style of the saddlebags.

Up front, riders can also get additional turn signal lighting with the Windshield Trim sequential turn signals. These narrow LED light strips mount to the windshield, so there is added visibility higher up on the motorcycle. This is especially beneficial when riding behind a truck or an SUV or when riding in low light/visibility conditions. One of the best times to suggest an upgrade to the windshield trim is when installing a new headlight, since the fairing is already apart.

Road Glide owners may also want to add vent trim from Custom Dynamics. These narrow LEDs replace the OEM fairing vent with white running lights and amber turn signals. In addition to giving the bike even more visibility, they also fill in those gaps with a great punch of light. ■

Front and Center Easy Tank-Top Storage

With THRASHIN Supply Company’s new Tank Bag your customers can keep their phone, wallet and other frequently needed items in the most convenient place possible – front and center on the gas tank.

Secured with four powerful magnets, the Tank Bag easily sticks to any steel gas tank and is super easy to install and remove. Flexible feet conform to the tank’s shape and THRASHIN includes clear stickers to help protect the paint.

Measuring in at 9-inches long, 6-inches wide, and 4-inches tall, the new Tank Bag offers 3.5 liters of storage space. The bag’s compact size works well for a handful of belongings but isn’t so big that it clutters the cockpit. One of the most appealing features for modern riders, and one of the motivations for the Tank Bag’s creation, is a touchscreen-compatible clear cell phone pocket on top that lets riders manage their phones on the road.

With the THRASHIN Tank Bag, the phone is right where your customers need it and fully secure in the tank bag’s sleeve. “Of course, it’s also great to have a little extra storage space for things that we don’t want to put in our saddlebags,” Coury explains. “This bag is also great for our Dynas and FXRs where there’s no fairing and limited saddlebag space.”

“After putting down tens of thousands of miles on our bikes, we realized that a tank bag would be a really useful item,” says company founder Lance Coury.” Having an easy-to-reach place for your wallet and sunglasses is nice, but what Lance and his road-tripping crew really wanted the tank bag for was mounting their phones. “On our Road Glides, it is much easier to use the GPS navigation on our

Understanding Oil A Deep Dive Into the Slick Stuff

Oil will keep an engine running smoothly, but it can also cause some friction when making a decision. There are a lot of choices! Mineral or synthetic, or how about semisynthetic? And what makes a lube for one sump different from the oil for another? Turn to the oil experts at Maxima to learn more.

Crude oil was first pumped out of the ground in the late 19th century, and mineral oils are still refined from crude. Like gasoline, mineral-oil base stocks come in different quality grades, and Maxima is committed to using the best base stock from Group 2+.

This oil offers the highest purity and most consistency, but like all mineral oils it still contains some impurities and the oil molecules themselves can vary a bit. Maxima adds its own additive package to the Group 2+ base oil to improve its performance and durability, making V-Twin Mineral oil an economical option that offers excellent protection and meets all OEM requirements. V-Twin Mineral oil is available in 20W-50 and 10W-40, with 10W-40 being a popular option for service shops that only want to stock one oil.

At the other end of the spectrum are synthetic oils. Unlike mineral oils, synthetic oils are synthesized from other ingredients, leading to a pure base oil that’s free of impurities, consistent and able to perform in ways that mineral oils can’t.

Maxima’s V-Twin Full Syn is mixed entirely from synthetic ester base stock that is more slippery and more durable than mineral oil, and provides incredible wear protection.

Maxima’s V-Twin Gear Primary Oil is formulated specifically for high-performance V-Twin transmissions and primary chain cases.

Maxima’s V-Twin Full Syn is mixed entirely from synthetic ester base stock that is more slippery and more durable than mineral oil, and does things like stick to surfaces to provide incredible wear protections. V-Twin Full Syn is superior to mineral oils and will help an engine make more power, but that comes at an increased cost. Price is really the only drawback to V-Twin Full Syn, which is why semi-synthetics like V-Twin Semi Syn exist.

V-Twin Semi Syn bridges the gap between affordable oils like V-Twin Mineral and Full Syn, providing some of the benefits of a synthetic oil at a lower cost. This is achieved by mixing in a quantity of ester stock into the existing Group 2+ base stock. The shot of ester gives the mineral oil an added kick in the form of improved lubrication and

durability. Maxima’s V-Twin Full Syn and Semi Syn are both offered in 20W-50 for 1988-and-up Harley-Davidsons.

The same info applies to the chemistry of Maxima’s V-Twin Trans/Gear oil and V-Twin Gear Primary Oil, but you may still be wondering why there are different oils for each sump. If Harley went through the effort to separate the crankcase, trans, and primary so they can operate independently, doesn’t it make sense to tailor each lubricant for its intended purpose? That’s Maxima’s stance, and it’s why you see so many options in the Maxima lineup. ■

» All those oil options aren’t there to confuse anyone, they’re there to better serve the engine and your customers. Talk with your rep for more details, and see the whole selection in the Tire & Service catalog and at www.dragspecialties.com.

All three Dynojet Power Vision models are available for Harley-Davidson customers. For those riding an Indian V-Twin, Dynojet offers the PV3 and PV4 models. Dynojet is committed to creating V-twin tuning products that meet each user’s performance objectives.

POWER VISION 4

Dynojet’s *(EMIS Code 1) Power Vision 4 (p/n 1020-3987) offers V-twin customers a plug-and-play solution from a respected name in Harley-Davidson Bluetooth flash tuning. The PV4 uses Dynojet’s simple, easy-to-use app to deliver tunes to the ECU, and is backed by hundreds of performance tunes delivered directly from the cloud –anywhere, anytime.

Pairing the PV4 with a smartphone puts the user in control to unlock each bike’s hidden potential. Customers can find tunes to fit their specific make and model, access Dynojet’s vast database, or create custom tunes. Additionally, each PV4 purchase enables users to license and tune additional vehicles from the app. Incredibly quick and easy to use, the PV4 for Harley models puts the consumer in control of the ideal tune for their power delivery objectives.

POWER VISION 3

The *(EMIS Code 2) Power Vision 3 eliminates clutter and puts tuning performance at one’s fingertips. It allows users to flash their ECU from the road to optimize the air/ fuel ratio and keep them in sync and control.

Once a tune has been delivered, the PV3’s easy-to-read full color hand-held display allows one to quickly access the tune and a vast library of pre-tested Dynojet tunes. Once back in the garage, the performance data can be analyzed using Dynojet’s Power Core software.

The PV3 also holds multiple tunes that allow users to optimize their motorcycle’s performance for specific use scenarios, like increased torque, higher top speed, or improved fuel efficiency. Users can unplug the PV3 device once the ECU has been flashed or head out with the controller attached as a minimalist user interface. The PV3 is fitted with OEM-style connectors, making installation smooth and seamless.

POWER VISION

Dynojet’s original *(EMIS Code 2) Power Vision (p/n 1020-2325) tuner is a robust flash tuner device for Harley motorcycles that allows users to deliver peak performance in various road conditions and use scenarios. The PV doubles as a performance tuner and data monitor, offering the latest flash tuning and data logging technology.

For Harley riders, the Power Vision is not only a powerful EFI tuner, but also monitors the vehicle’s route performance data and then creates a custom tune based on that data. The user can then flash the tune to the ECU, and they’re back on the road in no time. Each Power Vision includes a full-color 3.9-inch, easy-to-read screen, built-in basic autotune mode, WinPV (Windows PC) tuning application, and vehicle interface cable. The Power Vision is an ultimate tuning device for fuel-injected Harley motorcycles with the 2021 Delphi ECM.

Drag Specialties Dealer V-Twin Specialists

BLETTNER POWER SPORTS • HANOVER, PENNSYLVANIA

Blettner Power Sports, a small yet resourceful and successful independent V-Twin shop is situated a few miles north of Pennsylvania’s southern border that’s shared with Maryland. It’s tucked into the township of Hanover along Frogtown Road, and you can take one of half a dozen rural and county roads to get you there. As shop co-owner and founder, Brian Blettner will tell you in his lighthearted, yet welcoming manner, “The customer has got to find us.”

Translation: Hanover, with a population of approximately 16,000, is a small, friendly town that’s slightly off the beaten path. But, once Harley-Davidson owners become familiar with the Drag Specialties dealer’s reputation, they also become devoted customers.

Blettner Power Sports was a long time in the making given Brian entered the motorcycle industry in 1973 as a young service helper. “I was putting together new Hondas for A&H Cycles in town when I was 13 years old,” Brian says. In coming years, he honed his expanding mechanical skills while working for motorcycle shops in Hanover during the week and racing his own bikes on Sundays. Success in motocross, flat track and off-road racing, plus snowmobile competition during winter months, led to many trophies.

In 2004, he opened the doors at his new store in a 24-foot x 24-foot building with its combined tech service area and parts and accessories sales. Blettner’s business was good right from the start, and is still going strong with a professional, yet relaxed way of conducting business. That attitude traces back to when Brian established his new venture in the same, now expanded building that remains on site today.

Brian’s two sons Dylan and Dalton also pursued racing with entries in the KTM JR Supercross Challenge, Loretta Lynn’s AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, and the THOR Mini O’s Amateur Motocross Championship. They experienced commendable success, but eventually their racing journey led to their father’s fledging business in Hanover, in the process picking up plenty more awards and trophies along the way.

FRIENDLY V-TWIN FOCUS

The majority of the Blettner Motor Sports’ early business focused on metric and off-road bikes, so Brian started as Parts Unlimited dealer. Slowly but surely, though, his Harley-mounted clientele grew until the crew at LeMans realized that Blettner was becoming a go-to outlet for V-Twin owners, and less and less for metric motorcycles. The shop has ever since been a thriving hub for V-Twin customers.

Clearly, a large contingent of Harley owners resided in Hanover’s rural part of the state, so it was convenient for those riders to frequent the Blettner business. It probably helped that one of Harley-Davidson Motor Company’s prime factories is located not far away in York, Pennsylvania.

Not only did Brian’s two sons start working at the business, Dalton and Dylan also became part owners in 2016, Brian says. “They have taken the business to new heights. Their work ethics and vision for the future is awesome,” he adds.

Today Blettner’s Drag Sales Rep is Mike McKee (#468), a former flat track racer himself. Moreover, he’s a man who Brian and his sons describe as being, “The most hands-on rep we’ve ever had.” McKee reciprocates, adding, “Blettner Motor Sports does a great job, is super friendly and is one of the top V-Twin shops in the area.”

Drag Specialties was instrumental in helping the shop gain its Techno Research credentials, a popular software vendor program through Drag Specialties that led to even more VTwin riders showing up at Blettner for service on their bikes.

Along the way, the business continued to expand, and Brian, Dylan and Dalton took an interesting route when it came time to add on to accommodate the increase in

business. They opted to leave the original 24x24 building’s four walls and roof in place. Their expansion focused on creating new exterior walls and roof extensions around, or adjacent to, the original structure. In essence, this is two buildings in one, creating an interesting floor plan that allowed Brian to be creative with interior decor.

Brian considers himself a collector of old stuff, in this case discarded barn-side wood slats that local farmers remove when they renovate their aging barns. He gathered and placed the weathered slats onto each of the shop’s interior walls to create a rustic, woodsy appearance. It’s a treatment that gives the entire shop a warm, rustic, even nostalgic, feel, that also serves as a backdrop for some moto-artifacts.

There are also three big-screen TVs on the walls, each one featuring one of three different program themes. One TV broadcasts updates about the shop’s monthly specials, another focuses on content from Dunlop Tires, while a third focuses on customers’ bikes. The last is like a broadcast bike show highlighting those custom machines.

If customers don’t feel like watching television, the Blettners installed a big picture window that showcases a commanding view of the service area where patrons can watch the shop’s skilled technicians ply their trade.

That Dunlop TV footage comes as being part of the Dunlop Pro Dealer program, a perk of which includes the stream of Dunlop-branded, motorcycle-focused content to keep customers entertained while in the shop. Blettner also teamed with Dunlop to place the tire company’s logo patch onto the Drag Specialties shop shirts worn by shop employees. The other sleeve sports a Blettner Power Sports patch, so everybody is happy – and looking good!

Blettner’s retail store not only offers customers a clear view of the service department, it’s also chock full of great parts and accessories from plenty of Drag Specialties vendors.

IT’S ALL ABOUT BUSINESS — AND FUN

This year, the shop teamed with another local dealer to benefit Harley riders in the Hanover area. The Blettners acquired a new Dynojet dynamometer that will be housed at nearby Winebrenner Motors, a popular shop in Hanover that specializes in selling pre-owned V-Twin motorcycles.

Shop owner Jimmy Winebrenner refurbished what once served as his shop’s burn-out pit to make way for the new dyno that the techs from Blettner will operate. The dyno will be used year-round, even in the winter, so technicians from both shops will be busy, and customers can use the cold months as downtime to refresh their rides.

It’s the competitive, yet friendly, spirit held by the Blettner gang that has been a key factor in the shops’ success. Drag rep McKee lauds them for never missing an NVP, and Brian, Dalton, Dylan and Denise attend Drag Specialties’ annual dealer rides as well. Brian points out that they rely on their squadron of shop Harleys for those popular Drag events. What do they ride? Brian is on a 2016 Road Glide with Denise on back, while Dalton rides a 2013 Street Bob, and Dylan rips it up on 2020 Street Glide.

However, the winter months won’t be all work and no play for the Blettner bunch. When the cold Mid-Atlantic winters set in, all three Blettner Boys trade their Harley riding gear for snowmobile apparel, load up their sled rigs and head to Upstate New York for some serious winter trail riding.

Joining the boys is Brian’s girlfriend, Denise Jewitt, with her own snowmobile. She’s also a shop employee and lists her role as the basic office manager who handles payroll, paying the bills, working as a purchasing agent, you name it, she does it. There are four more players who also help keep the shop running. They are Blettner’s four certified service technicians; two full-time wrenches, Kolton Koontz and Brandon Baker; and two part-timers, Greg Soltes and Greg “Whiz” Hall, who’s been working with Blettner Power Sports since day-one.

The shop is also involved in community and charitable groups, and every year Blettner Power Sports helps the Pennsylvania-based military charity Roots for Boots prep a custom Harley as a gift to a qualified, U.S. Military Veteran. Each Memorial Day the organization holds a memorial ride that attracts 300 to 400 riders. The bike prepped by Blettner Power Sports (with help from the FatBook) is presented during that ride.

For 20 years, Blettner Power Sports has focused on service for their V-Twin customers in the shop’s area of Pennsylvania, and the proud Drag Specialties dealership doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon! Drag Specialties Magazine congratulates Brian, Dalton and Dylan and their team for a job well done.

“They’re the nicest people you’ll meet,” says Drag rep McKee. “Most of all, they know that the V-Twin market is where they belong.” ■

The service department at Blettner Power Sports features five bays where each technician has their own tools and workspace. It's a tidy operation trusted by countless V-Twin customers.

Ready to Spring Solo Seats for Customs and Rigids

Trends in the V-Twin scene come and go, but there are certain styles that have become classics. Spring solo seats are one of those design features that have withstood the test of time. They can be used on an older bike, or a new rigid bike build with vintage vibes. At the same time, spring solo seats can be paired with a more modern design aesthetic.

The standard large and small seats feature a high-density polyurethane molded foam on top of the steel base to provide maximum cushioning. The low-profile options have a slim ½-inch closed-cell foam to keep things sleek, giving that classic Bobber look.

After a builder or rider chooses the seat size and style, it’s then time to pick the finish. Drag Specialties Seats has a

Whatever direction a builder or customer decides to go, they can find a spring solo seat to complete the look thanks to the wide variety of styles, finishes and mounting options available from Drag Specialties Seats.

Whatever direction a custom builder or rider decides to go for their custom or rigid bike, they can find a spring solo seat to complete the look thanks to the wide variety of styles, finishes and mounting options available from Drag Specialties Seats.

No matter what style or size the seat might be, each spring solo seat from Drag Specialties Seats begins with a heavy steel base. This base is strong and durable, and its contoured design provides the shaping builders need for that perfect fit and look.

Each seat comes with an adjustable front seat hinge and two rear mount studs for the springs, which can be ordered separately. All the necessary mounting hardware is included, too.

Drag Specialties Seats offers 4 different seat styles, including a large and small spring solo seat as well as low-profile versions in both large and small sizes.

variety of leather or vinyl covers available, like smooth black leather or brown faux alligator, to make it even easier to get just the right look for a custom bike. A distressed brown leather finish is an especially good option for a real vintage look.

For builders who want to take more of a DIY approach, Drag Specialties Seats also offers spring solo seat bases in both a small and large size. The bases are painted black and are ready to be topped.

One of the cover options is Drag’s black solar-reflective leather. The unique finishing process for this leather reduces the surface temperature of the seat by as much as 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Not only is the seat cooler, but it is more durable than conventional leather or vinyl, too.

For builders who want to take more of a DIY approach, Drag Specialties Seats also offers spring solo seat bases. These seat bases are made from a durable 16-gauge steel and include a weldedin center bar for further stability. Available in both a small and large size, these seat bases arrive painted black, so they are ready to be topped.

Passengers haven’t been forgotten, of course. Drag’s rear solo seats add a spot for another rider to sit on a custom bike, and they coordinate with both the large and small spring solo seats. These rear solo seats have a fully carpeted aluminum seat pan to protect the bike, and the solar-reflective leather keeps the seat a comfortable temperature. There are both long and short options available for the rear solo seats.

Drag Specialties Seats also offers rear pillion pads to pair with the solo seat options.

The mount kit for spring solo seats includes the mounting bracket along with 3-inch chrome springs and a leather frame cover. This convenient option is a single part number for everything needed to install one of Drag’s small or large spring solo seats.

Drag also offers mounting brackets in both hinged and fixed versions. These steel brackets are available for the rear solo seats, too, and will work with both the old-style and new-style fender nuts.

Drag Specialties Seats has been providing custom options for V-Twins since 1970. The seats and seat components give builders and riders an outstanding variety of choices for customizing a motorcycle. And since the seats are made in the USA at the company’s headquarters in Rogers, Minnesota, the seats are as American as the bikes for which they are designed.

There are even more Drag Specialties Seats options to explore with the Drag Specialties Custom Seat Order

Drag Specialties Seats mounting kits and different type springs for solo seats allow your customers to dial in the exact look for their dream custom.

Drag’s seat springs come in heights of 2 inches, 3 inches or 5 inches. In addition to the traditional spring shape, there are also torsion springs and conical springs available, and finish options include both chrome and black.

As expected, Drag Specialties Seats has absolutely everything needed to install a spring solo seat. There are spring seat mounts for both 1-inch and 1¼-inch frame tubing diameters, and there are both bolt-on and weld-on options.

This year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was a scorcher at the start, with temperatures soaring into the triple digits, but it didn’t stop the crowds who converged on the Black Hills of South Dakota for 10 days of riding, bike shows, concerts and more. As usual, Drag Specialties was on hand to be a part of the action.

Drag has been a big presence at Black Hills Harley-Davidson for more than 20 years now during the Sturgis rally, and this year was no exception. The parking lot was filled with Drag vendors who were on hand to show off products, sell and even install parts right there on the spot.

And, as one would expect, the Drag truck was there, too, showing off custom bikes outfitted with many of those same products from Drag vendors. Those bikes are a great way for riders to get inspired about what they can do with their own V-Twin. After getting ideas, all they have to do is take a walk around the parking lot and visit the vendors.

One new thing at the Drag truck this year was an Arai service station. Arai customers could get their helmets cleaned and serviced, including adjusting things like the face shields, and they could stock up on extra accessories. While Sturgis and helmets haven’t always been two words you often hear together, there seems to be a big upward trend in helmet use at the rally.

Nearby Deadwood, South Dakota is a major attraction for riders during the Sturgis Rally.
The famous Sturgis sign on Sly Hill overlooking the city's downtown.

TRENDS AND TALLIES FOR THE ANNUAL RALLY

Helmets weren’t the only piece of safety gear getting attention at Sturgis. Alpinestars was there for the first time with the TechAir 3 leather vest. Since it’s aimed squarely at the Cruiser market, Sturgis was the perfect place to let riders check out the airbag-equipped vest in person.

Having the vendors on hand at Black Hills Harley-Davidson has a couple of big advantages.

“Black Hills Harley-Davidson is a business atmosphere. People come there looking for products or info on products,” notes Drag’s Tom Motzko. And, he adds, since that’s the local Harley dealer, “riders from other states have a mission to get a T-shirt from Black Hills Harley-Davidson.”

In other words, the dealership is one of the top attractions at Sturgis, which makes it a perfect place for Drag vendors.

Drag Specialties National Sales Manager Greg Matter always spends a lot of time with the Drag vendors at Sturgis, making sure they’re taken care of and checking in on how business is going. He reports that sales seemed to be on par with last year’s rally, which makes sense since the attendance numbers were about the same, as well.

Local news outlets estimated that about 471,000 vehicles entered Sturgis during the course of the 10-day rally. That number is based on vehicle counters placed on the roads

coming into town, so while there are certainly some bikes being counted more than once as they come and go, it’s still a good way to compare numbers year over year. And for 2024, there was about a 3 percent increase in riders entering Sturgis compared to last year.

Like this year’s Daytona Bike Week, the uptick in attendance was minimal, but Matter speculates a lot of riders are waiting for next year, when Sturgis will celebrate its 85th year. There seems to be something about a milestone year that really draws crowds.

First and foremost, the Sturgis Rally is a riding event and the roads of the Black Hills are filled with V-Twin might. This year's mix included cruisers, Performance Baggers, Choppers and a fairly new segment, Adventure bikes.
There's no end to the scenery as rally goers spread out and enjoy all the riding opportunities the Sturgis Rally has to offer.

“There were a lot of people who were out there enjoying riding and enjoying learning about new products at the vendors. Overall, the mood was positive,” Matter says.

And, while Sturgis may not have seen a big jump in growth in terms of attendees, it’s experiencing growth in different ways.

“Sturgis isn’t just Sturgis: it’s the Black Hills area,” Motzko says. “The rally used to be focused on Sturgis, but then they made it so you could park your bike on Main Street of Deadwood. It’s spread out. There are a lot more campsites and motorhomes, and people are staying as much as 100 miles away.”

Additionally, Motzko says people are coming to Sturgis earlier in the summer or arriving later, once the weather has started to cool down. And he would know.

“I have an advantage over anybody else because I live here!” he says. “My wife and I both have motorcycles, and we both ride on the weekends, so we get to see the tourist motorcycle traffic from May 1 through October 1. And many people are coming a lot earlier. Tourist season is important.”

Motzko is seeing a lot of the same trends during the rest of the riding season in the Black Hills area that he saw at the rally. “What we have noticed over the last few years is

As part of Drag Specialties presence at Black Hills Harley-Davidson, Arai set up a helmet service center where customers could get their helmets cleaned and serviced. There were also face shields and accessories available for Arai owners.

Drag Specialties vendors Legend Suspensions and Saddlemen were also on hand at Black Hills to get rally goers set up and comfortable for the region's stellar riding routes.

way more people are wearing helmets, there are way more Trikes, and there are more Indians every time,” he says. “And, there are more young people.”

Matter also gets to gauge the latest trends at Sturgis, learning a lot not just from the riders on site but from all the Drag reps who are on hand, too. “We stay at a place where we can make dinner at night, hang out and have some good camaraderie,” he says of the Drag team. “You always learn new things from them because they’re the ones talking to the dealers every day.”

As for the look and feel of the bikes at Sturgis, Matter says, “The Performance Bagger influence is starting to show more and more on the street. And there were a lot of Low Rider STs out there.” Handlebars are trending more toward a T-bar style rather than taller designs, Matter noticed, and they were a big seller at Sturgis alongside seats and exhausts.

Like Motzko, Matter also noticed the uptick in Indians, but Harleys still make up the overwhelming majority of bikes at Sturgis. Since a lot of them are still bone stock, that means there are a lot of opportunities for vendors to help riders up their game before next year’s rally.

And, for anyone still on the fence about attending in 2025, Motzko is quick to point out the reasons that Sturgis is worth the trip. “The beauty of Sturgis is that there are 20 things a day to do!” he says. But, ultimately, it’s about the chance to ride in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. He notes, “People come to Sturgis because it’s a ride-to rally. The riding here is extremely wonderful. Spearfish Canyon is in the top 10 of the best roads to ride in America. Come out and enjoy the riding.”

And, when riders need a break from touring the area, they can visit the Drag vendors at Black-Hills Harley-Davidson.

See you next year. ■

Bagger

Style Points Fairing Upgrades and Modifications

Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation’s new Sharknado fairing brings aggressive styling and sharp lines that cut through the air to the front of a wide variety of bikes. Each one is equipped with a Klock Werks 9-inch Sport Flare windshield.

Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation blends a one-off eye for shape and style with the convenience of bolt-on components. Case in point; the new Sharknado fairing. This fairing is a creation of Paul Yaffe’s design and development, bringing aggressive styling and sharp lines that cut through the air to the front of a wide variety of bikes.

Each Sharknado fairing comes complete with a Klock Werks 9-inch Sport Flare windshield that complements the shape and look nicely, while still providing the wind break needed for a comfortable ride. Customers can paint or finish Sharknado fairings to match whatever their bike’s theme may be with a ready-for-paint gelcoat finish.

The patented Sharknado EZ mount system helps make this fairing an option for a wide range of your customers. New fitment part numbers for 2024 Harley-Davidson models include 2000 – 2023 Softail, 1999 – 2017 FXD/FXDWG and 1986 – 2022 XL models under one part number, plus 2018 – 2023 FXFB/FXFBS models under another part number. As with all Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation fairings, Sharknado fairings are carefully crafted and hand-laid right here in the USA.

While it’s a great option, some of your customers may not want to change their fairing completely to achieve a new look. Through key design work and a simple bracket and

support bar change, Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation’s fairing drop block kit allows Road Glide riders to drop their fairings a full 1¾ inches.

Not only does dropping the fairing help increase the field of vision, but this seemingly simple change makes a big impression with a “muscle bagger” stance and appearance. Each block in these drop kits is fully machined from 6061-T6 aluminum for strength and lightness, and each support bar is powder coated black to blend in seamlessly.

Appearance adjustment options don’t end there. Road Glide customers can also pick up a Bagger Nation stealth fairing support bar to allow for removal of unsightly stock engine guards and fairing support brackets. This support bar remains completely hidden and provides a clean, custom look without sacrificing rigidity.

Low Rider customers can also clean up their look with stealth fairing support bars designed to replace the exposed fairing support on 2022 – 2023 FXLRST/FXRST models. Like the rest of Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation lineup, these fairing support bars are made in the USA and manufactured to a high-quality finish.

The Paul Yaffe Bagger Nation lineup bridges the gap between custom bike builds and bolt-on modifications. ■

MADNESS! MOTORCYCLE

DEEP INSIDE ONE DRAG REP’S COLLECTION

Many people reading this issue of Drag Specialties Magazine could probably agree: One can never own too many motorcycles at a single time. Especially if the bikes in question are Milwaukee’s finest – Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

And the one thing better than a garage full of American V-Twins is the avalanche of aftermarket parts and accessories available for those bikes through the FatBook and OldBook. The catalogs serve as a bottomless parts bin that allows Drag Specialties dealers to cater to Harley owners everywhere looking to set their motorcycles apart from all others, new or used.

Mixed within this huge supply chain is the legion of Drag Specialties’ sales reps, each rep serving motorcycle shops – both franchised dealers and independent shops alike – within their designated regions. Drag Specialties’ sales reps are the conduit between dealers and the parts vendors who list their products in the FatBook and OldBook.

“No doubt, our sales team is the best in the industry,” says Greg Matter, Drag Specialties’ National Sales Manager. “They’re also Harley enthusiasts, and quite often their bikes become rolling displays that they use to demonstrate, in real time, parts from the FatBook and OldBook.

“It’s not unusual to see reps ride their own Harleys when making dealer calls, and you’ll also see them riding their personalized bikes at Drag Specialties’ Dealer Rides.”

One such example? Drag rep Blake Melton. In fact, Blake sometimes has difficulty deciding exactly which of his Harleys to ride when making a dealer call or attending Drag events. Melton’s first motorcycle was a 1979 Honda

XR80 he received as a Christmas present – a bike that his motorcycle enthusiast father, Duey Melton, let him fire up right in the living room. That first bike led to Blake eventually getting a used 1999 Heritage Softail and a life-long love for the road.

Blake landed a position on Drag Specialties’ dealer sales team on October 1, 2011, and took on the sales region that spreads through Eastern Tennessee, Western North Carolina, Northern Georgia, Southern Kentucky, and parts of Virginia and West Virginia. If you’re familiar with that region you know it’s Motorcycle Country, and Blake has a small, yet enviable, collection of Harleys to choose from for his rides.

Blake’s Magnificent Seven is a collection consisting primarily of 1980s and 1990s FXR and Dyna models. Blake owns three FXRTs, his most recent build a red 1989 Sport Glide model that he scored

following a lead by Drag Specialties dealer Busted Knuckle in Newton, North Carolina. Other than a S&S Super E carburetor and its Tear Drop Cover it was stock, but there was no way Blake was keeping it that way. He promptly took the FXRT to another Drag Specialties dealer, Dream Rides of Tennessee in Maryville for teardown.

Digging into the FatBook and OldBook he began gathering parts to give the classic bike some new performance parts, starting with the S&S Cycle V124-inch Black and Chrome Super Sidewinder *(EMIS Code 3) for power plus other custom components. Burnout Cycles got the call for final assembly. After this, Lefevers Cycle in Johnson City, Tennessee, got the call for a complete paint job. J and B Performance in Mosheim, Tennessee, took care of final assembly.

In its reimagining, that Sport Glide received a whole complement of LED lighting upgrades from Custom Dynamics. In addition to the performance boost supplied by that S&S motor, there’s an S&S Super G carburetor kit *(EMIS Code 3) and a Bassani Road Rage 2-into-1 exhaust *(EMIS Code 4).

The bike that started it all. Blake on his first dirtbike, a 1979 Honda XR80 in a photo taken in 1984 in Heber Springs, Arkansas.

From the THRASHIN Supply bars and risers up front and the Performance Machine pegs and floorboards down below, to the S&S Cycle powerplant at the heart and the Custom Dynamic LED upgrades all over, the bike is a rolling Drag Specialties showroom.

Performance Machine supplied the rear caliper in Black Ops finish, Apex foot and shifter pegs, and Contour XLS grips. Hand controls are rounded out by PSR’s Journey levers in chrome and perch clamps from THRASHIN Supply Co. The rear suspension got an upgrade from Legend’s REVO-A adjustable FXR coil shocks. Blake’s collection also includes a 1985 FXRT that he purchased from Rodney Cycle House in Little Rock, Arkansas. FXRT number three is a1986 that he acquired from Little John’s Cycle in Lenoir, North Carolina. He also has a 1991 FXRC, and a 1980 FXWG Wide Glide that belonged to his Uncle Dorsey, who passed it on to his Uncle Rick, who then gave it to nephew Blake under the provision that the bike remain in the family, in this case for Blake’s son Connor. There’s also a 2008 FXDC Dyna Super Glide that Blake calls his “forever ride.” For service, Blake calls on David Snapp at Custom Cycle Corner in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Will Blake’s madness end? Probably not.

“Once the excitement starts in personalizing a Harley, it somehow continues,” explains Tom Motzko, who oversees Drag Specialties Vendor Development. “That’s especially true for many of our sales reps who know our products inside and out.

“The excitement among our sales reps and their dealers only grows, and it’s not uncommon for our sales reps to own more than one bike, as Blake Melton does. And that behavior parallels that of our dealers and their customers.”

You might say that the enthusiasm remains all in the family! ■

Easy Electrics

All-Inclusive Wiring Harnesses

Show of hands: Who among America’s many talented custom motorcycle builders – pro and do-it-yourselfers alike – enjoys wiring the electrics for a scratch-built bike? No surprise, not many builders do, although threading wire looms that can stretch the length of the bike is part of the custom-build process, one that tests a builder’s electrical expertise, not to mention patience.

That job can now be made much easier thanks to GMA’s all-inclusive wiring kits that allow builders to eliminate the existing OEM switches from a bike’s handlebars, or to create an custom wiring circuit that’s unique to the custom motorcycle itself. Either application allows for a neat and tidy system, regardless of what bike it’s applied to.

These proprietary wiring kits are especially easy to adapt to GMA’s exclusive line of custom hand controls for clutch levers (cable and hydraulic systems) and front brake levers with integrated master cylinder assemblies for single- or dual-disc front brakes, depending on applications. All GMA hand control systems fit 1-inch handlebars (except dimpled bars), and can be used as custom applications for stock Harley-Davidsons, or for one-off custom builds. Made of high-quality aluminum, GMA hand controls are CNC machined for precise fit and finish, and speaking of finish, they come in black, chrome or polished to suit any custom bike styling theme. All GMA custom controls include mounting clamps and levers with hardware.

GMA hand controls can be ordered individually or with Switch Kits that can route wiring internally or externally, depending on the builder’s preference. Each Switch Kit includes three momentary switches with buttons, switch housing and colorcoded wiring harness.

The Switch Kit’s OEM color-coded wires are 48-inches long, and the compact 2-inch module to control button operation can be mounted just about anywhere on the motorcycle. These kits were designed for the specific purpose of making it easier for a builder or your customer to complete the project, be it a stock-bike conversion or a full-on custom.

The kit also includes OEM-style Deutsch 6-pin connectors and pins. Heat-shrink tubing, enough to encase the entire electrical system, is also included with the kit. Finally, trouble-free installation is assured thanks to easy-to-follow instructions, plus GMA supplies a full schematic to help determine routing the color-coded wires themselves.

Kits are available separately with or without switch set, or as part of a full package that includes hand controls, switches and harness. ■

Filter Fanatics

The Anatomy of a Premium Oil Filter

ProFilter’s M-Pleat technology is designed to increase the company’s air filter’s dirt-holding capacity up to 30 percent, thus giving your customers a longer service life.

There’s a misconception that oil filters are all pretty much the same,” says Trevor Reis, brand manager at ProFilter. The reality is that not all filters are created equal, and ProFilter has made the effort to ensure its V-Twin products are a high-quality option for your customers.

First, a little history. ProFilter was formerly Ready Filter, a Southern California based company that offered pre-oiled air filters for off-road bikes. Maxima Racing Oils acquired the brand, renamed it, enacted some important quality and packaging changes, and then started expanding the product line.

Around 2010 Maxima introduced its popular V-Twin Oil Change Kits. “At the time ProFilter didn’t do oil filters, so we were using someone else’s filter in the kits,” says Reis. “We wanted an in-house option, so that catalyzed a whole development program, and now ProFilter can service anything from V-Twin to side-by-side to scooters and watercraft.”

What makes ProFilter oil filters different? We’re so glad you asked. “The biggest feature is a tech we refer to as M-Pleat. It increases the filter’s dirt-holding capacity by 20 percent to 30 percent, so you get a longer service life,” Reis says. The technology sandwiches a half-length fold of filter paper between full-length pleats, adding filtering area without reducing oil flow. “Actually, the half-fold that creates the middle of the ‘M’ acts as a spacer between the longer pleats, so it flows better” Reis explains.

On the topic of flow, ProFilter implements a higher quality drainback valve that better withstands high heat, which can be a concern on V-Twins. “If you have a failure in the drain-back valve you run the risk of dirty oil and debris from the filter heading back into the engine,” Reis adds.

Quality control is another big distinction for how ProFilter operates. “We test each and every filter,” Reis says. “Every unit is spun onto a jig, submerged in water, and pressurized to test for leaks.” With QC like that, it’s no wonder that ProFilter has had “zero reported failures,” he says.

ProFilter oil filters also feature a welded-on removal nut, which went through numerous iterations to arrive at the strongest, safest setup. “We looked at different types of patterns for weld points to ensure the two parts are bonded together in a way that doesn’t weaken the canister,” Reis says.

Finally, ProFilter filters have a convenient pre-lubricated gasket, covered in a shrink-wrapped cover that keeps the lube on the O-ring and keeps anything from entering the filter. Reis wants to remind folks not to over-tighten filters. “The nut is for removal. Install the filter by hand, and once that gasket makes contact with the engine, it’s just another ¾ of a turn.” As far as pre-filling the filter with oil before installation, “that’s really just personal preference.” ■

Rising Up, Clamping Down Billet Product Upgrades

For many riders, it’s only after dialing in the fit, pro portions and fitment of their motorcycles does that machine start to feel like their crew at Joker Machine understands this well. This is why they’re dedicated to supplying customers with a wide range of components that help riders build their own experience to feel at home on their machines.

Take Joker Machine’s handlebar risers, clamps and adapt ers, for example. This line of handlebar accessories has been carefully designed to blend unique, custom style with the one-of-one feeling riders are looking to build toward.

Risers accomplish much more than just holding the handlebars in place. Joker Machine’s variety of risers feed the styles of a wide range of your customers with pullback, bridge and dual riser designs. Each assembly is fully CNC-machined from 6061 billet aluminum to achieve substantially higher tensile strength over some OEM cast components. Strategically placed machined cutouts and lightening holes give Joker risers a key weight advantage while maintaining strength.

Joker Machine’s pullback risers relax the handlebars back toward the rider 1½ inches while lifting them 2½ inches. For customers looking for height in the dual-clamp style, without any pullback, they can lift their bars 2 inches or 4 inches with Joker Machine’s dual riser/clamp assemblies. Whether they decide to go straight-up or leaned back, they have the option of gloss black or chrome finishes, both with gold zinc top clamp mounting bolts for timeless, slick style.

If customers are looking for a more race-inspired look, Joker Machine’s Bridge riser assemblies feature a singlepiece top clamp with machining that looks like it was taken straight off a factory race bike. Plus, multiple configurations of Bridge riser assemblies cover almost any preference, including two heights of straight rise and pullback styles. Regardless of which your customers choose, each riser set is tapped for the common Harley mounting bolt size.

Joker Machine’s reputation of blending style and substance doesn’t end there. For customers looking for a simpler modification that still packs a custom punch, Joker Machine’s upper handlebar clamps and indicator light handlebar clamps are a quick way to get a racer look that riders can appreciate.

Fitting many 1999 – 2017 Big Twins and 1986 – 2022 Sportsters, Joker Machine’s upper handlebar clamps share the same high-strength, CNC-machined billet aluminum construction as its risers. This clamp design is

There are also pullback riser options from Joker Machine in a big range of configurations. Each one allows your customers to personalize and customize the fit and feel of their bikes’ cockpits.

Convenient Conversion Quick and Easy Fairing Kits

Road trips, adding music to ride, getting on the road earlier in spring or staying out later in the fall – there are a lot of reasons riders would want to add a fairing, and for decades, Hoppe Fairings has had a solution. With Hoppe’s Quadzilla, 5566, and 6x9 fairing kits for Harley-Davidson Freewheelers, Road Kings, and Softails, your customers can easily add an attractive fairing, complete with an amazing sound system.

Founded by John Hoppe, Hoppe Fairings spent decades as a family run business in Kenosha, Wisconsin. In 2018 Hoppe Fairings found a new home with the Motor Trike family, and moved operations to Troup, Texas. Under Motor Trike’s guidance, Hoppe continues the tradition of quality founded by John Hoppe, now with the added value, topnotch engineering, and customer service of Motor Trike.

Last fall Hoppe introduced a totally revamped fairing lineup in the style of Harley’s 2014-and-up batwing fairings, complete with a faux vent. The Quadzilla, 5566, and 6x9 models have been fully reworked to improve their look and fit, making them an even more appealing mod for your customers.

Motor Trike’s extensive injection-molding capabilities allowed a switch from fiberglass to ABS plastic – the same material from which Harley’s factory fairings are made. The result is a lighter fairing with a smoother, more consistent finish and absolutely perfect edges. Rather than a smooth inner skin that was begging for paint, the new fairings have an OEM-style textured finish that looks factory and hides scratches well. As before, the fairings rest on the factory windshield mounts and are easily installed or removed with the twist of two knobs. Power is supplied by a simple wiring harness provided with the kits.

New materials and manufacturing processes improved the look and fit of the Hoppe fairings. Beyond that, it’s more of the same features riders have always loved, namely a great entertainment system. The Quadzilla, 5566, and 6x9 models differ in their head units and speaker options. Customers can choose between a classic single-din stereo with AM/FM radio and a CD player, or opt for a modern double-din touchscreen unit complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. All head units offer Bluetooth wireless audio and handsfree phone function, plus they come with front, rear, and sub pre-amp outputs for easy upgrading.

There’s also a choice of speakers. The Quadzilla is a classic, with four, 5-inch marine-grade speakers. The 5566 replaces the two inner 5-inch speakers with larger 6-inch units for fuller sound, and then there’s the 6x9, which as the name suggests points two premium Kicker 6x9 speakers at the rider.

With a Quadzilla, 5566, or 6x9 fairing, your customer can easily outfit their bike with comprehensive wind protection and a solid sound system. ■

RBetter Mousetrap Innovative, Problem Solving Products

obbie Lane founded Alloy Art to solve problems. “If we throw our hat in the ring with a product,” Lane says, “it’s going to bring something new to the table and eliminate issues.” He’s not blowing smoke; that “build a better mousetrap” mindset is evident in all of Alloy Art’s products, especially its Strong Arm Inner Fairing Brackets, Gooden-Tite Handlebar Bushings, Super Cush Replacement Drive Dampener, and Gen 2 Universal Chain Cush Drive Conversion Kits.

The Strong Arm Inner Fairing Brackets blow the stock, flimsy sheet-metal brackets out of the water thanks to a pocketed and ribbed design that Lane says was inspired by an especially hectic ride on his KTM dirt bike.

“I went for a technical trail ride and crashed a bunch, and was surprised that the bike’s rear subframe didn’t break. I looked at it and it was an injection-molded piece with

gussets and webbing,” Lane says. “I’d been doing injection molding for years, so I immediately saw an opportunity to apply that technique to the weak inner fairing brackets on the Electra Glides, Ultra Glides and Street Glides.” The Strong Arms are injection molded from high-impact nylon and eliminate the many problems associated with the weak OEM brackets.

Alloy Art’s patented Gooden-Tite Handlebar Bushings are another game changer that solve the issue of sloppy steering. “On just about any Harley, if you really push on the bars, you can make it move several inches in each direction,” says Lane. The Gooden-Tites eliminate unwanted flex while still damping vibrations.

Then there’s the Super Cush Replacement Drive Dampener, which can last twice as long as the stock damper set. “The stock rubber cush drive is just too soft, and it causes a delay in throttle response,” he says. Alloy Art’s setup improves throttle response while still protecting the drivetrain, and considering that Harley recommends replacing the cush drive every 6,000 miles, Lane explains that “it’s a no-brainer to sell a set of Super Cush any time a

tech touches the rear axle.” So, if you’re doing a chain, belt or tire, make sure you offer your customer the superior performance of a Super Cush.

Or better yet, your clients can get a Super Cush as part of a complete drivetrain upgrade with a Gen 2 Universal Chain Cush Drive Conversion Kit. “Nowadays everyone is building motors with big power, so you’ve got to run a chain,” Lane says. “We didn’t like the conversions that were out there, so we decided to do it better. Our aluminum sprocket carrier is designed like a giant hex or lug, and it mates with the steel sprocket ring, so you’re not just relying on bolts to hold the sprocket in place. It’s the strongest setup you can get, and everything is machined in-house in Southern California.” ■

EComfort at the Controls

Premium Grips for Harley-Davidsons

very component of a motorcycle is critical to the complete system working together. Furthermore, each piece is critical to how a customer feels when riding the bike. Grips, for example, are a seemingly small part with a big job – maintaining the interface between rider and machine.

Prioritizing quality and craftmanship, Avon Grips is well experienced in producing premium grips that facilitate a positive connection to the bike. Ready to equip Harley-Davidson riders everywhere, Avon’s Diamond Contour grips offer the best of both worlds in function and style.

Engineered with ergonomics in mind, Diamond Contour grips feature a smaller diameter design compared to traditional Harley grips, and are carefully built with control-enhancing texture and plush comfort.

Diamond Contour grips are similar in size and shape to Avon’s popular Custom Contour grips, but the added diamond flair of style gives riders another way to accentuate other custom touches. The grips’ surface is smooth, yet offers a secure feeling with its heavy pattern, promoting control and reduced arm fatigue.

Each Diamond Contour grip is manufactured in the USA using injection molding with high-quality, synthetic rubber materials, resulting in a premium finish riders can see and feel. These grips are finished with billet aluminum end caps and collars in chrome or black anodized options and are always supplied with pre-installed throttle and clutch-side tubes for ease of installation. ■

Clean Controls

Hiding the Throttle Cable

Sometimes, it’s small innovations that make a big difference. The throttle internal cable from Müller Motorcycle is one of those. This small part produces a dramatic change in a bike’s look by hiding the throttle cable, instantly giving the controls a cleaner look.

The throttle internal cable assembly comes with a Tefloncoated Bowden cable, and it can accommodate a variety of handlebar lengths. The cable operation is extremely smooth and precise thanks to the ball bearing design,

with an accuracy that is within hundredths of a millimeter to minimize play. Riders get a clean, cable-free look that doesn’t compromise performance. When Müller Motorcycle showed off the throttle internal cable at the Louisville NVP, it was an instant hit.

Handlebar end turn signals can be used even with the throttle internal cable installed, and the system can accommodate any aluminum grips. A throttle adjustment screw enables the rider to adjust the throttle play to their desired setting.

To aid installation, Müller Motorcycle also has a throttle mounting kit available. Installing the throttle internal cable requires the handlebars to be cut, and the kit makes it easy to measure, cut and assemble everything. A drilling/cutting gauge can be clamped securely into place to provide a clean cut, and the kit makes it easy to drill holes in the correct spot. Even the correct size drill bit is included. ■

NPast to Present Pistons for Every Era

From Knuckleheads to Milwaukee-Eights, KB Pistons has your customers’ piston needs covered.

eed pistons for a Shovelhead? How about an Ironhead Sportster? Whatever Harley-Davidson year and model you’re working on, KB Performance Motorcycle Pistons likely has a fitment for it. From 1941 Knuckleheads to today’s M8 engines, KB Pistons has an incredible range of applications.

There are also a lot of choices beyond just which pistons fit which bikes. Stock compression and high-compression applications are available for most Harley engines. Recently, the choices increased further with the addition of big-bore Milwaukee-Eight pistons.

Another choice is whether to go with cast hypereutectic alloy pistons or forged alloy pistons, both offered in a variety of compression ratios and strokes. Both the cast

and forged pistons feature an M42 high load-bearing, anti-friction skirt coating.

There’s only one exception to that, and it’s the KB Pistons Super Duty series. Those high-performance pistons are treated with Line2Line abradable skirt coating for the ultimate ring seal and extremely quiet operation.

All KB Pistons kits come with the pistons, rings, pins and clips necessary for installation, too.

The cast hypereutectic alloy pistons are manufactured from high-strength, T-5, heat-treated, 390 hypereutectic aluminum alloy. This allows for a tighter fit, which results in less piston rock. The ring seal is better, too, and overall, this style of piston has a longer life than a stock piston thanks to its design, manufacturing process and materials.

The forged alloy pistons available from KB Pistons are forged from low-expansion 4032 aluminum alloy. The offset pin allows for quiet operation. ■

Right-Sized Rotors

Braking Upgrades for ’24 CVOs

Riders who want high-performance brakes for their V-Twins are likely familiar with GBrakes/Galfer Braking Systems oversized WAVE rotors. The company has been offering this size of rotors for a while now, and Harley-Davidson now has the same size rotors for its 2024 CVOs.

What that means is that GBrakes/Galfer Braking Systems 12.5-inch rotors fit perfectly on the new CVOs. With earlier bike models, that rotor diameter is still oversized, but on the ‘24 models, it’s a direct swap in terms of size. In terms of performance, though, the GBrakes/Galfer Braking Systems rotors are a big upgrade.

WLife Behind Bars

Custom Handlebars and Mirrors

ith Todd’s Cycle’s range of products, old-school craftsmanship meets modern technology. The lineup of U.S.-made parts is a reflection of company founder Todd Silicato’s dedication to custom building, fabrication, R&D and race-team orchestration. The results are a comprehensive line of handlebars, mirrors and more.

Handlebars can change a bike’s entire look and feel. Position, shape, size and finish are all variables that Todd’s Cycle has refined into different styles to serve unique looks and riding experiences. At a glance, the handlebar lineup includes Strip bars, ape hangers, Beater bars, and more, but we’ll dive deeper into some of the details.

Strip handlebars from Todd’s Cycle are the definition of custom style and detail. These bars are offered in 1-inch, 1¼-inch and 1½-inch categories, each in a variety of different heights as low as 10 inches and as high as 20 inches. Strip bars are slotted for internal wiring and notched for easy mounting of throttle-by-wire applications. Customers can choose from chrome, gloss black or even flat black finishes.

Another classic handlebar style is the ape hanger. Even non-motorcycle enthusiasts know what ape hangers are, which is why it’s a timeless option for a wide range of bikes. They’re available from Todd’s in a traditional, narrow style as well as bagger style. Todd’s traditional ape hangers are designed to work with OEM risers and clamps and include new control clamps to replace bulky stock ones.

Todd’s Bagger ape hangers are designed for use with Batwing fairings. Available in two different rises and three finishes, these wide and tall bars make a heavy style statement.

Even beater bikes need love too, which is why Todd’s Beater bars offer a classic, straightforward look with comfortable riding ergonomics to make them a no-brainer choice.

Amongst this wide range of handlebars, a great complement to almost any build are Todd’s Shooter mirrors. These mirrors are offered in three versions – clamp-on, bar-end and control-mounted.

All Shooter mirrors feature billet aluminum construction and are fully adjustable. Bar-End Shooter mirrors use the Gooden-Tite bushing mount system to reduce vibration

and maintain mirror visibility, fitting most handlebars with an outside diameter of 7/8 of an inch to 1 inch.

Todd’s even offers Shooter mirrors for riders retaining OEM-style hand controls, integrating seamlessly and providing a slicker look. All Shooter mirrors come in chrome or black finishes, with a special textured black option for clamp-on style. ■
