Happy New Year! by D on Em de

I

’m not too much into politics, but I have to say I sure am glad we got the 2016 election out of the way. The reason has nothing to do with who ended up winning or losing, but I think the seeminglyendless rhetoric we heard all year from both sides contributed to putting America into a bit of a holding pattern waiting to see how it was going to work out. Okay, so the world did not come to an end as some suggested it might and its time to get the 2017 season kicked into gear. Nobody is doing more about that than LeMans Corp., parent of Drag Specialties. They are preparing right now for the new Drag Specialties NVP / Product Showcase to be held for the first time in Indianapolis in February. This event is in addition to the traditional event held annually in Madison. In this issue we are featuring a preview of this new Indy Show with lots of great new products for 2017. Check it out beginning on page 26. Something else that relates to the new year is the 2017 Drag Specialties FatBook catalog that is now printed and ready to go. The 2009 Harley-Davidson Dyna featured on the cover of the FatBook is also our cover bike for this magazine issue with all the behind-thescenes details. Be sure to read about the project and how the FatBook was used throughout.

The 2016 Drag Specialties dealer ride – the Driftwood Run – happened just a few months ago, early November to be exact. As they have done annually for the last 11 years, the crew at Drag Specialties came up with another great location for a ride: Jekyll Island, GA. This year’s ride had 185 participants. I hope that included you. If not, be sure to ask your Drag Specialties sales rep for details on how to get in on this great event for next year. 2017. It’s here. A whole new year filled with opportunities. Let’s make the most of it. ■

ccording to company founder Joel Felty, custom headlight manufacturer Headwinds might not exist if not for the want of a Porsche 911.

Having worked his way through college at a Porsche dealership, he had a soft spot for the sports cars. He decided he wanted to join the club.

The Drag Specialties vendor is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and Felty talked with Drag Specialties Magazine about the company’s unique origins.

Looking to bring in some extra money for his dream car, he landed a part time gig as an engineer at Performance Machine. About three months into the part time job, the government TRW contract he was working got canceled and Performance Machine’s founder, Perry Sands, hired him on full time.

Way back in the early 1990s Felty was working as an engineer in Southern California’s defense industry, doing satellite design for TRW’s Space Communications program. It was there he noticed that many of his fellow engineers were all driving Porsches.

RIDE ON Headwinds is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2017.

Performance Machine and being a Harley owner got Felty thinking about what parts were missing from the aftermarket. “I realized that, boom, what am I not seeing? A cool headlight,” Felty says. “I said, ‘Here I go I’m going to start making headlights.’” So in 1992 he started Headwinds out of his garage, all the while still working at Performance Machine. Business began slowly, but picked up enough to where he knew he had to leave his day job and take on Headwinds full-time. In 1996, he handed in his notice to Sands and launched into Headwinds full-time with his wife Julie. Since those humble beginnings, Headwinds has grown into a premiere operation that makes all of its products in-house and even operates in the Street Rod and Tractor Trailer/Big Rig markets. Joel handles all engineering, sales and marketing, while Julie takes care of the finances.

NAMZ Custom Cycle Products NAMZ / BADLANDS PRODUCTS & ACCESSORIES ARE AVAILABLE IN THE USA & EUROPE FROM PARTS UNLIMITED AND DRAG SPECIALTIES.

Drag Specialties was Headwinds’ first distributor and he credits the company for helping him establish his now 25-year-old business. “Me and my wife, we’ve worked hard at it,” he says. “As for the direction I went, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The motorcycle has been very good to me.” ■

For 2017, the show features productdriven seminars covering such topics as EFI tuning, as well as a V-Twin Expo exclusive look at emissions regulations and their effect on the industry. There is also an interactive discussion on Land Speed Racing featuring racer Jody Perewitz, daughter of noted custom builder Dave Perewitz. The V-Twin Expo is a trade-only event that keeps the focus on business. However, that’s no reason to not let your customers know you’re attending this year. Stock lighting has given way to a Custom Dynamics 5¾inch LED headlight.

Free breathing with a wide-open look, Trask’s Assault Charge air filter is a no-nonsense addition to this Dyna.

The Drag Specialties Ride-Height Adjustable Shocks are new to the FatBook. Blacked-out versions were an obvious choice here.

Dynas are fast, nimble and just plain fun, a blank canvas ready to customize. Russ Wernimont’s bolt-on FXRT fairing leads things off.

A Speed Merchant Skid Plate and Ness calipers add function, Covingtons’ finned covers provide the form. High bars, a low seat, the bark of Bassani’s Road Rage III pipes and one super-cool paint job. This Dyna is in a class all its own.

A FATBOOK TAKE ON A CLASSIC LOOK t’s a build style going by any number of names, depending on who’s doing the talking. Some call it “West Coast.” Others name it “Club,”“Outlaw,” or even “Thug.” Whatever the name it’s all the rage lately, and it’s nothing new.

The style has been around for years just like the Harley-Davidson model it’s built on, the venerable Dyna. Harley Dynas, as plenty of riders know, are just plain fun. They’re cheap, they’re plentiful, they’re fast as all get out, they handle extremely well, and more to the point here, they’re a blank canvas ready to be turned into a masterpiece.

In this case, it’s the 2017 FatBook cover bike, a 2009 Fmodel, a Fat Bob given that classic treatment by Joe Houpt and team at Suburban Harley-Davidson with plenty of help from the inside pages of that very catalog. Talk about an invitation to throw a leg over the saddle. Dynas done up this way, cool looking as they are, are all about usability, rideability, dependability and their allaround performance. With that in mind Joe and the guys at Suburban kept this FXDF’s engine reliably mild. However, with the addition of a *Bassani Road Rage III 2-into-1

exhaust, a deep breathing *Trask Assault Charge air filter and an FI re-map courtesy of the *Vance & Hines FP3 fuel controller, there’s more than enough oomph on hand to make things interesting. To keep everything on track and pointed in the right direction, the team added an Alloy Art frame/motor stabilizer, along with Performance Machine’s Platinum Cut Formula wheels and some pretty hefty Pirelli Night Dragon rubber. Braking got a boost with Arlen Ness calipers, Performance Machine Formula rotors and all new lines, hoses and fitting straight from the FatBook. A set of Drag Specialties’ new Ride Height Adjustable Shocks made the cut, too. While Drag Specialties carries the Performance Machine Platinum Cut Formula wheels, rear rotor and pulley for many Harley models, it doesn’t have the specific Dyna fitment/sizes of those pieces used in this build, but they can easily be special ordered. Talk with your Drag rep about making a special order.

With all this taken care of, attention then turned to the look, and just as importantly the rider-interface with the machine. And the most noticeable addition for all of that is the FXRT-style fairing. Russ Wernimont Designs’ FXRT fairing is a dead-nuts version of what’s probably the slipperiest windcheater the Motor Company ever produced, and it’s a straight bolt-on to a Dyna. A Klock Werks’ Flare windshield was added for superior air management. They also used LA Choppers BMX handlebars on Biltwell 10inch risers to put the controls up where they belong for this style. To get the rider in the right spot, a Drag Specialties Low Solo seat went in place. Dynas like this are all about the riding, all kinds of riding, so a set of Joker Machine’s Serrated Footpegs went on for a firm foothold when the action gets hot. Form wasn’t forgotten in all this function, so while some might have preferred the total blacked-out, badass approach, that isn’t mandatory and it sure wasn’t done here. Look this one over from stem to stern. There are shiny

The RWD fairing is a straight bolt-on. This one is mounted with a short Klock Werks FXRT Flare windshield.

The engine was left reliably stock, dressed up by Covingtons, LA Choppers and Gardner-Wescott, tuned with a Vance & Hines FP3 Fuel Controller.

bits everywhere. Sure, there’s plenty of black, but interspersed throughout there’s shiny. It’s in the mirrors, in the handlebar risers, the derby cover, the air filter, that cool little Speed Merchant skid plate up front, and even on the pipes. Then there’s that paint job, something decidedly not black. It’s the handiwork of Jason LeCavalier and Artistimo Custom Bike in Waukesha, WI. Multi-shades of blue put down in a panel-pattern that’s at once both contemporary and fresh, yet still nods back to the Larry Watson and Bellflower, CA cruise nights of the 1960s. We’ll all be seeing plenty of this bike over the next year. When it’s out with the Drag Specialties Show Truck it’ll definitely be worth the time to stop by and take an up-close look. In the meantime have a peek here, and at the Build Sheet accompanying these photos. So, call it what you want, it doesn’t matter. Whatever the style, it’s a Dyna that’s as cool as cool comes. And, it’s ready for action. ■

Coming or going it’s clean, simple and ready for action. It’s easy to see why this Dyna is the 2017 FatBook Cover Bike.

New Year, New Look

Introducing the Mesh Collection

key to staying relevant in the aftermarket parts game is the ability to nurture a devoted customer while simultaneously attracting a new breed of buyers. It isn’t always easy, but that’s exactly what the team at Kuryakyn has thrived on for nearly three decades. On the heels of a successful brand refresh in 2016, Kuryakyn continues to overhaul its image with a barrage of new, timeless designs that appeal to a range of riders. With a new year comes new opportunities, and Kuryakyn is poised to stay fresh in the minds of the Harley-Davidson faithful with the introduction of their all-new Mesh collection. The Mesh collection is debuting with a stacked lineup of 50 direct-replacement parts for Dyna, Softail, Sportster and Touring models, all available through Drag Specialties. The distinctive grilled mesh designs are a hybrid of mechanical and utilitarian aesthetics that deliver a raw, edgy look for nearly the entire line of Milwaukee iron. Included in the collection are bolt-on derby, points and master cylinder covers for XL, Twin Cam and Milwaukee-Eight platforms, as well as caliper covers for FX and FL models. Mesh dash inserts, fuel doors, saddlebag hinge covers and fairing vent accents are a handful of highlighted offerings for Bagger models. Sportster models also receive a Mesh front pulley cover that provides a mechanized, semi-exposed look. Multi-fit components include Mesh gas caps with matching LED fuel and battery voltage gauges available for tanks equipped with screw-in caps and illuminated fuel gauges. Rounding out the collection’s featured products are replacement bezels available with red or smoke polycarbonate lenses for bullet and flat-style turn signals.

36

Mesh fuel door

The entire series features multi-piece construction throughout. Most parts integrate a three-piece design integrating chrome or satin black aluminum outer frame with a satin black aluminum baseplate that’s visible through a satin black or chrome stainless steel mesh panel. The Mesh turn signal bezels, front pulley cover for Sportsters and fairing vent accents eliminate the use of a baseplate. Exposed socket-head cap screws add a rugged, mechanical appearance and safely secure the components in place. The Mesh collection’s construction and resulting look is truly unlike anything Kuryakyn has ever developed. The multi-piece designs can be easily disassembled, allowing for unlimited customization by end users. Baseplates, steel mesh panels and frames can be all be painted or coated to match any color theme. ■

A Lifetime of Passion

From Baseball to Starter Motors

K

eith Terry, founder of Terry Components, had three passions as a youngster — riding motorcycles, working on hot rod cars, and baseball. He was very good at all three.

In 1967, just out of high school, Keith signed a contract as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox Organization. For the next five years he played on many minor league teams working his way up to the majors. Then, in 1972, Keith’s baseball career was cut short by a shoulder injury. The whole time he was playing ball, Keith maintained his two other passions, cars and motorcycles.

Keith and Fran Terry.

So, Keith entered into his second career, building on one of his other passions, automobiles. He started his first company Terry Distributors, specializing in automotive remanufacturing of import carburetors. In 1986 Keith sold his company to Fiat USA and stayed on as president and as a member of the board of directors for Magneti Marelli for the next five years. Now comes the important part of the story for the motorcycle industry. With some free time on his hands, Keith built his first custom motorcycle with his older brother Kent. This started his third and most lasting career, creating and building motorcycles and motorcycle products. He hasn’t stop building since. In 1996 he started his present company Terry Components, which specializes in after-market High Torque starter motors, super flexible battery cables and a closed-loop fuel management system. “I’ve owned motorcycles since I was 15,” Keith says. “I always felt there is nothing more frustrating than a bike that is hard to start. So I started manufacturing aftermarket starting systems for Harley-Davidson applications, along with super flexible battery cables and accessories. Terry Components have been pretty successful, but we will continue to introduce more products as long as the Harley industry grows and changes.”

40

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2017

In 2004, Keith moved the company to Spearfish, S.D., and in 2012, he was asked by Rod Woodruff of the Buffalo Chip Campground to lead the Legend Ride Student Build Challenge. For this event, a custom motorcycle is built at Sturgis Brown High School and auctioned off in Deadwood during the Sturgis Rally. He has led that program every year since. In 2014 Keith was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum’s Hall of Fame. Keith continues to run Terry Components, which is still dedicated to improving and maximizing fuel and starting systems for current and aftermarket Harley-Davidson motorcycles. This commitment has earned the company a reputation as a long-term player in the industry. An example of just one of their starting systems is the Terry Components 1.8kw Slugger high-torque starter motor for Harley Big Twins. The 1.8kw starters are designed for high compression 95-inch or bigger motors.

TERRY COMPONENTS

Terry Components’ heavy-duty battery cable kits deliver more cranking power with less voltage. The OE upgrades are also extra-flexible for custom applications.

These starters are assembled in the USA with heavy-duty components and tested with state-of-the-art equipment. The solenoid plunger, return damper and springs are replaced with stronger components. The clutch shaft and rollers are replaced with precision-ground and hardened parts for longer service life. All components are assembled with a special lube for starter roller clutch applications. After assembly, all starters go to a dyno test including hi-low voltage, stall torque, solenoid engagement, amperage draw, load test, maximum rpm, and motor impulse waveform. That’s just the basics; the results are even more impressive as these starters produce 46 percent more cranking torque than the stock starter. Terry Components offer starter systems for multiple Harley applications that can cover nearly all of your customer’s needs. Drag Specialties also carries Terry Components’ heavyduty battery cable kits. These cables deliver more cranking power with less voltage. The unique lug design made from 99.9 percent pure electrolytic copper provides a positive connection with greater conductivity and dependable service. The American-made kits include upgraded quality cables required for stock applications and features construction of 4-gauge 1,666-strand tinned copper wire housed in a super flexible silicone jacket. Keith enjoys the motorcycle industry and making products that your customers want and need to keep their machines running properly. “There just isn’t a more exciting, fun industry anywhere,” says Keith. The characters that make up the motorcycle industry just can’t be duplicated. It’s the only industry that as time moves on you seem to get younger.” “I’m so lucky and proud to be able to play a small role in something I love. The motorcycle industry has provided me with so many experiences and so many friends over the past 25 years of being in business. I was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall Of Fame in 2014 and have been a member of the legendary Hamsters since 1995. I live in Spearfish Canyon and get to ride my bike through the hills more often than most, which is a great thing. Life is good!” ■

arley-Davidson’s new engine, the Milwaukee Eight, is all about torque and the enhanced riding experience it’ll deliver.

First versions are being fit into 2017 Touring bikes and, with past as prologue, riders are going to want new, better looking, better sounding and better performing exhaust systems. Bassani has them, pipes and mufflers designed and custom-tuned especially for those Milwaukee eights engines. A great place to start is with the Road Rage 2-into-1. Just like the Milwaukee Eight the Road Rage is all about torque, performance and the riding experience, a perfect match to that new Harley power plant. BELT DRIVES

Belts from the Beginning Primary Drives for the Classics

With a lineup for the classics this big and inclusive, your customers are going to find the belt they’re looking for no matter which vintage Harley they’re working on. From the 47-31 Kits up to those highly sought-after EVB3T-4 Kits, the EVB-3T-5 Kits and the EVB-3T-RBs, there’s a belt-drive package that’s going to be perfect for the application. Those Dash 4s, Dash 5s and the RB differentiate the kits for 4-speed, 5-speed and those early-year rear belt drive Shovelhead applications. Along with all the complete kits, there are kits that have just the front and rear belt pulleys and a primary belt. They’ll utilize the OE three-finger or three-stud clutch hub as well as aftermarket five-finger or five-stud clutch hubs.

Since 1972 Belt Drives, Ltd. has been manufacturing primary belt drives for classic Harley-Davidson models like those old Knuckleheads, Panheads and Shovelheads.

L

et’s go right back to the beginning for this one. Vintage Harley-Davidsons are hot stuff with a lot of riders. Those Knuckleheads, Panheads and Shovels live on and then some, all just as popular and sought after today as they’ve always been. Belt Drives, Ltd. has been manufacturing the cool primary belt drives for these timeless two-wheelers since way back in 1972. That’s more than 40 years of experience, and BDL is still here and stronger than ever. Over the years the company has maintained that steady flow of belt drive primaries for the older Harleys, primary kits used worldwide. Today the Shovelhead kits are by far the most popular, but whatever is in demand or asked for — whether it’s an 8mm kit or an 11mm kit or one for a Panhead or a Knuckle — BDL has it. The applications go all the way back to the 1936 model-year Harleys and Drag Specialties has them all.

44

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2017

BDL’s primary kits have been around for decades. They’ve been a mainstay for the company and for countless numbers of riders. Belt drive enthusiasts over the decades have trusted these kits for their all-around performance, their durability, their no-nonsense function and their ease of installation.

In most instances your customer can even retain the stock clutch hub and clutch plates. Just fit all that into the BDL belt drive rear pulley basket, use BDL’s front belt pulley, slip on the BDL belt and away they go. It’s time-tested and there’s a kit for all the vintage applications. Have a rider putting together a 1960s to early-1984 electricstart Shovelhead? A 4-speed or a 5-speed model? BDL has it covered. How about a Shovel with that OE rear-belt drive? BDL has the primary for that one, and there are kits for all the Panheads and Knuckleheads. Everything is still in production, still available and is just as popular as ever. While the BDL kits will let riders use the stock clutch hub and plates, things don’t stop there. BDL has what it takes to upgrade those vintage clutch hubs, clutch plates and pressure plates. It’s the CC-100-S Competitor Clutch package.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Made to solve that troublesome “floating basket” syndrome so common on the older Harleys, the Competitor Clutch will keep that clutch perfectly adjusted. No more worrying if the clutch is going to act the same from stoplight to stoplight or from day to day. The CC-100-S is a clutch hub and full clutch assembly that fits right into the stock OEM 1936 through early-1984 basket, and allows the basket and hub to act and move as one rotating mass just as the newer bikes do. There’s also 30 percent more clutch surface than stock.

The CC-100-S Competitor Clutch package is designed to solve the “floating basket” syndrome common on older Harley-Davidsons. It fits into the stock basket on 1936 through early 1984 bikes.

Pans, Knuckles and Shovels are more popular today than they’ve been in years. BDL knows it, and has the belt drive primaries and upgrade Competitor Clutches for them all. ■

LED LIGHTING

Light Up the Night

See, Be Seen and Look Good

E

xperienced riders know one thing for sure; when the sun goes down you darn well better be able to see where you’re going. Equally as important, you better be sure that everyone else out on the road sees you. Upgraded lighting will accomplish those goals, and when that improved visibility also adds a custom touch to the bike, that’s just an added bonus. All this is why custom lighting is as popular as it is, and it explains the long lines we see at the Custom Dynamics displays at all the major motorcycle events. Custom Dynamics, with its TruBEAM® LED headlamps, TruBEAM passing lamps, LED Halo headlight trim kits, and other exciting lighting products has the answer to those super-important lighting questions. It’s all an upgrade in lighting performance and good looks and Drag Specialties has it.

46

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2017

When it comes to nighttime riding, the TruBEAM LED headlamps and passing lamps from Custom Dynamics will let your customers see more of the road, and make their presence known.

Swapping OE lighting for the Custom Dynamics TruBEAM LED headlamps is a no-brainer. The TruBEAM’s light pattern and reach more than doubles what a stock Harley headlight delivers. That kind of performance is made possible by the TruBEAM’s complex reflector design, and its three low-beam and two high-beam LEDs, both projector and reflector types. As a bonus, the TruBEAM LEDs draw way less current than the stock Harley halogens they replace — only 1.1 Amps on low and 1.5 on high. The TruBEAMs even weigh less than an OE headlight, and they’re plenty tough with a durable polycarbonate lens. All this comes in sizes perfectly matching the stock lamp so no extra trim pieces or adapters are needed for a plug-and-play installation, and it all meets DOT specifications.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

CUSTOM DYNAMICS

Custom Dynamics’ Halo headlight trim ring and windshield trim kit feature built-in turn LED signals. Combined with the company’s other LED lighting products, these pieces add an extra level of visibility for riding at night.

TruBEAM headlamps are available in all the popular Harley-Davidson sizes. There are 7-inch replacements for Electra Glides, Road Kings, Street Glides, Trikes, Softails, and Dynas. There are 5¾-inch TruBEAM LEDs for Sportsters. Custom Dynamics also has direct-fit TruBEAMs for the 2004 to 2013 Road Glides with oval headlamps. Harley-Davidson Touring bike riders can really light up the night with the addition of Custom Dynamics TruBEAM LED passing lamps. They are the same size as the stock Harley lamps, and they’re five-times brighter. For 2005 and later bikes with OE passing lamps they’re a direct plug-and-play installation. Earlier model Harleys will require an adapter that is available from Custom Dynamics. TruBEAM headlights and passing lights aren’t all that Custom Dynamics has to brighten up the face of a Harley.

The company also makes Halo headlight trim rings with built-in turn signals, and a windshield trim kit with built-in turn signals. There are also vent trim kits and vent lighting that’s either forward facing or a backlit running light. Savvy riders know the importance of good lighting, headlights that light up the road by outperforming the factory halogens in both the length and width of their beam. This same lighting makes them much more visible out on the road. Custom Dynamics’ TruBEAM LED headlamps and passing lamps make all this possible. Add in the Halo headlight rings and the windshield and vent trim with all its extra lighting, and the front end of a Harley becomes almost impossible to overlook. ■

N OV E M B E R 4 – 7 | J E K Y L L I S L A N D , G A The Drag Specialties Dealer Ride has emerged as one of the premiere events in the V-twin industry, two days of riding where business relationships become personal and common interests are shared across the highways and mountain roads of America. All of this is a good explanation of why the 2016 Driftwood Run was one of the largest dealer rides Drag Specialties has hosted, with 185 total attendees rolling into Jekyll Island, GA. According to LeMans Corporation events coordinator Jeni Frye, demand from dealers to attend the ride hit an all time high. “This year was the best event so far and we cannot wait to top it again next year,” Frye said. “I would also like to thank all the participating vendors and dealers who participated.” “Without the sponsorship of our vendors and the sales from our dealers, this event would not be where it is today.” Located within the chain of the Golden Isles of Georgia’s barrier islands, Jekyll Island is a state park thick with driftwood skeletons, marshlands, historic ruins and live oaks draped in Spanish moss. Attendees settled into the Westin Jekyll Island, home base for a three-day, three-night getaway.

W

hen it first launched 11 years ago, the Drag Specialties Dealer Ride was designed to bring together dealers, vendors and sales employees all in the name of doing what everyone in the business loves to do, but often doesn’t have time for – riding motorcycles on great roads in great places. The rides have stretched from the Colorado Rockies and Texas Hill Country to the California Redwoods and the Black Hills of South Dakota. With each successive ride, a transformation has taken place. The camaraderie forged on those roads has grown into tight bonds between dealer, sales rep and vendor, friendships that now run well beyond the event weekend.

The event kicked off Friday with a Meet & Greet and stroll along Performance Alley where sponsoring vendors were highlighting their latest and greatest aftermarket products. Here dealers got some hands-on time with all those FatBook goodies, and got to pick up some sweet vendor swag. All attending dealers got an invite to the event by placing qualifying orders from the participating vendors. A welcome reception capped off the evening. The next two days, it was wheels down and kickstands up as attendees headed out on predetermined loops through the beautiful low country. Each ride day ended with a special dinner where riders had the chance to relax, unwind and rehash the day’s events. Sunday night was reserved for the farewell banquet and awards ceremony. With the 2016 ride in the history books, all sights are set on this year’s ride as Drag Specialties looks to take the whole extravaganza out west. Talk with your Drag sales rep for information on how you can qualify for the trip.

AUDIO EQUIPMENT

Wild Boar Audio New High-End Sounds

Wild Boar Audio is Hogtunes’ new high-end motorcycle audio line. All products in the kit-based lineup are for 2014 and later Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Y

ou know Hogtunes and so do plenty of your customers. An exclusive to Drag Specialties, Hogtunes kits are motorcycle tough and they always sound great, especially out on the road at speed.

The friendly prices, easy installation and that cycle-tough quality have made Hogtunes products favorites among many riders for more than a decade. Now Hogtunes has released an all-new/high-end motorcycle audio line, Wild Boar Audio, and it’s available now. There are a few major differences between the two brands. Unlike Hogtunes, all Wild Boar Audio products are for 2014 and later bikes only. They require a radio refresh for optimal performance and come with high-quality wiring harnesses. In the Hogtunes line everything is 2 Ohms like the factory radio. This allows the custom-er to start off with a simple speaker swap and add amplifiers and more later. Wild Boar Audio is much more “kit based.” And, with the goal of never damaging the bike’s charging systems, all Wild Boar Audio speakers and amplifiers are 4 Ohms allowing in-creased power levels without increasing current demands from the charging systems. The first Wild Boar Audio 6½-inch fairing speaker WBC 1654 (p/n 4405-0457) for FLH Models features a large multi-vented magnet, a real carbon fiber woofer cone, a 1¼-inch grille mounted tweeter and high-end crossover parts. The speaker is designed to work well in the small

airspace of the factory speaker cabinet, it’s rated at 200 Watts, and features locking tabs to secure the factory wire connectors in place. Next up is the 4 Ohm 6 x 9 WBS 1694 (p/n 4405-0458). Made specifically to work in the Hogtunes HT LID-RM (p/n 4405-0427), these high-end speakers feature a carbon fiber cone and as big a magnet that will fill it. This speaker kit features external crossovers that easily bolt into the underside of the lid — for you audio types, this is a true 6x9 separate component kit. The first amplifier in the Wild Boar Audio line is a 2-channel amplifier rated for 200 Watts x 2 at 4 Ohms. It’s 100 percent plug-and-play and comes with all required hardware to complete the installation. This high-powered amplifier features a three-position Radio Flash Se-lector switch allowing the end user to adjust the amplifier for whichever flash is in the radio. At this time the WBA 400.2 is only available in a kit (p/n 4405-0459) that includes the WBC 1654 front speakers. Road Glide speaker/ amplifier kits and a large 4-channel amplifier are currently in development. Hogtunes owner Mike “Pez” Pesdirz says, “We wanted to do a line like this years ago, but like all of our products we wanted to do it right. Once we had the new line for Rushmore platform bikes out we decided now was the time.” ■

EXHAUST HEAD PIPES

The Pro Duals

Completing the Exhaust Package the factory mufflers, new head pipes will bring even more to the exhaust upgrade, and do it in a number of ways. Consider the MagnaFlow Pro Dual pipes and everything they’ll add. Available for all the 2009 and later Harley-Davidson Touring models, Pro Dual head pipes will make a real difference in the looks and performance of that Bagger. Just like the new slip-ons they’ll lead into, they’ve been engineered for performance and crafted with style. An ideal addition for any tuned engine requiring better flow, they work just as well with stock or mildly modified engines. To do all that, MagnaFlow has routed the rear cylinder pipe to the left side of the bike creating a turned-length header with equal exhaust flow and backpressure from cylinder-to-cylinder. It’s a design that can deliver significantly improved horsepower and torque with a noticeably enhanced feel at the throttle. And, the headers look great.

MagnaFlow’s Pro Dual head pipes pair well with a set of the company’s slip-ons when upgrading a Bagger’s exhaust system. They offer improved performance and great looks.

O

ne of the first things a rider often adds to a new Bagger bike is a set of slip-on mufflers. They look better than OE, they’ll definitely sound better, and the free-flowing design lets the engine breathe better for a nice boost in performance. It’s a good beginning, but the truth is those slip-ons, good as they might be, are only half the story. To really finish that exhaust upgrade right your customer needs to add a new set of head pipes to go with those new mufflers. Just as those new slip-ons were a step up from

The 1¾-inch stainless steel pipes, featuring MagnaFlow’s exclusive non-bluing Magna-Black coating, follow the lines of the bike for a clean, cool, sleek look. And that performance routing, as well as the stainless-steel head pipes themselves, accounts for a big reduction in exhaust heat felt around both the rider and passenger’s legs. The Pro Dual, with all its performance and style attributes, makes for a more comfortable ride. MagnaFlow Pro Dual head pipes are available in Show Chrome or Deep Black finishes. With their big 2½-inch full-coverage heat shields, they’ll add a bold appearance. Both 12mm and 18mm O2 sensor ports are standard, too, so there’s plenty of tuning options available. Slip-on mufflers are a great start for a Bagger exhaust. But to do it right, new head pipes like MagnaFlow’s Pro Duals should be part of the package. ■

R

iders looking for replacement brakes ask for it all. Some want organic brake pads; others are after high-performance sintered metallic replacements. Those with custom bikes might want some bling down in those calipers, and some of those riders want the full upgrade, new rotors to go with the new pads. Just flip open the FatBook to the EBC pages and find it all. Brake pads? There are organics, Double H sintered metallic performance pads, VLD brake pads with chrome-plated backing plates. EBC even lists extreme-performance racetrack-only pads with Harley-Davidson applications. Right along with all that, EBC has the upgraded rotors, custom stainless steel with wide- or narrow-band friction surfaces for use with OE-style calipers or smaller, aftermarket calipers, and there are max-performance full floating rotors ready to bolt on. Someone asking for a simple, affordable replacement pad? That would be the EBC Organic, an always-popular top seller. Then there’s the Semi-Sintered EBC V-Pads, brake pads combining the best features of an organic, with the long-life durability of a sintered pad; a smooth, controlled feel coupled with high-mileage longevity. EBC also has Extreme Pro Sintered Pads and they have the Double-H pads with the highest friction rating in the industry. And don’t skip over those VLD pads with the chrome-plated backing plates. Those sintereds, semi-sintereds, Double-Hs and the chrome-backed VLDs all feature the patented NRS hook system construction. It’s a solid “hook-and-loop-like” connection between the friction material and backing plate that not only prevents corrosion, but also comes with a lifetime guarantee against any loosening or de-bonding of the friction material.

The EBC pages inside the FatBook are a one-stop shop for all your V-twin customers’ braking needs. There are brake pads for a multitude of fitments and riding styles.

EBC also has solid stainless steel rotors and rotors with 5-button and 10-button full-floating designs. Both of those full floaters, by the way, use EBC’s patented Square Drive rivet system, a non-circular connection between the rotor blade and inner hub. It allows the rotor blade to expand and contract freely without vibration. All the rotors, solid stainless and full floating, are available with wide- or narrow-band friction surfaces for use with OEMstyle or aftermarket calipers. As for style, there are full-circle rotor blades, contoured profiles, rotors with chrome finish or black-chrome hubs and Drag Specialties has it all. To further bolster this impressive line-up of braking products, EBC is in the middle of a multi-million dollar expansion of its Northampton, England facility. When work is completed later this year EBC intends to triple its production. ■

Keep It Clean

Caring for a Motorcycle’s Lifeblood

FUCHS-Silkolene developed its V-Twin 20W-50 oil specifically for HarleyDavidson engines. It’s a formula designed for peak performance and a long engine life.

C

hoosing motor oils, the lifeblood of any motorcycle, is important business. FUCHSSilkolene, with more than a hundred year’s experience formulating premium lubricants definitely has what it takes to keep a Harley-Davidson in tip-top shape, both inside and out. The lineup starts with a premium lubricant blended especially for a Harley, Silkolene’s widely acclaimed VTwin 20W-50. Along with that there is a full selection of synthetic and semi-synthetic oils available. Silkolene’s lineup continues on with race-quality high-performance brake fluids, and with coolant/antifreeze concentrates for those liquid-cooled Harleys joining the model range. There are even easy-to-use spray-on/hose-off cleaners to keep a bike shining bright. Drag Specialties has all of this and your rep can help you get the word out with all sorts of point-of sale-aids like shop banners, counter-top and floor displays, even Silkolene oil-change stickers. Silkolene might not be a name rolling right off the tongue for some Harley riders, but it should be.

The Silkolene V-twin oil choices don’t end here. There are also top-performing synthetic and semi-synthetic oils — Pro 4 15W/50 XP full synthetic and Comp 4 20W/50 XP semi-synthetic and Super 4 20W/50 semi-synthetic.

Those two XP blends, Pro 4 and Comp 4, are the latest out of the Silkolene labs. Dubbed “an oil tune in a bottle,” they offer measurable improvements across the board, significantly reduced engine wear, greatly reduced heat, up to an 11 percent fuel savings, almost 20 percent reduced oil consumption, and even a 3 percent bump in horsepower and torque, all according to Silkolene’s in-house testing. Don’t forget about everything else available from Silkolene — like those high-performance brake fluids, the Mag Cool concentrates for the liquid-cooled HarleyDavidsons and that Wash-Off Spray Cleaner, the fast, easy way to keep a bike looking it’s best. ■

SEATS

Enter the Villains

A New, Unique Custom Seat Line

F

or decades, many Harley-Davidson riders eyeing a saddle change have turned to LePera, and for good reason. LePera seats have always looked better — and felt better — than most anything the factory puts on a bike. LePera saddles are comfortable and besides fitting the rider they fit the bike. The base plates are super clean and fit tight. On top of that the craftsmanship and materials are always high quality and the style selection is huge.

The smooth Villain 2UP casts a striking profile and really highlights the comfortable seating space for both the rider and the passenger.

LePera’s new Villain seat offers your customers a unique option when it comes to solo or two-up seating. Here are the pleated and diamondstitch styles.

Now LePera is taking that 40-plus years of tradition and taking it to the next level with the Villain line, in both solo and 2UP versions. Villain seats are available for Sportsters, Dynas, Softails and Touring models and they’re all offered with choices of stitching colors, upholstery patterns and colors and even sizes and shapes. Simply put there’s a LePera Villain that’ll check off all the boxes on a rider’s wish list. Start with the Villain solos. Applications here cover the lineup, all those Sportsters, Dynas, Softails and Touring models and that’s just the start of the possibilities. Along with classic-look smooth black Naugahyde coverings, there are diamond-stitched seating areas and pleated seating areas. Any of these choices will dramatically change the look and feel of a bike for the better. The unique looking Villain solo will be a fresh addition to your customers’ bikes. That Villain style is available as a 2UP, as well, and here again applications cover Sportsters, Dynas, Softails and Touring. They are available in smooth, diamond and pleated seating areas. For the Touring applications there are a couple more interesting variations. The Daddy Long Legs Villain moves the rider’s seating area 2-inches back, giving taller riders the extra legroom they need. The Super Villain takes the design to another comfort level with added padding and support for the long haul. The Super Villain has extrawide seating front and rear, too. LePera has always pushed the limit of seat design to the next level, redefining what a cool, custom seat can be. All that’s sure true with the Villains — solo, 2UP, Standard, Daddy Long Legs, and Super. ■

Big Twin Power

New Pipes, Unique Finish

F

rom the moment Harley-Davidson announced that the new Milwaukee Eight motor would be the power plant in its 2017 Touring model lineup, the V-twin world was abuzz with talk about Harley’s new engine. Naturally, much of that talk focused on wringing some extra oomph out of the already-powerful eight valve big twin.

4½-inch HP-Plus slash-cut slip-on in black and chrome

Well, the team at Khrome Werks wasted no time in engineering some hot new headturning parts specifically for the Milwaukee Eight bikes. The company’s new 4½-inch HP-Plus slip-on mufflers are just the ticket for putting some serious power in those 2017 Touring models.

4½-inch HP-Plus slash-cut slip-on in black and chrome

When it comes to the finishes Khrome Werks uses for its vast product lineup, the company goes a full measure past the tried-and-true chrome and black offerings. In fact, when it introduced its StyleLinc™ Eclipse finish on an array of exhaust products at Daytona Bike Week in 2016, the V-twin community let out a collective gasp over the unique and stylish finish. Since then it’s been a showstopper at events across the country.

The 4½-inch HP-Plus® slip-ons are engineered for performance, style and sound. How much performance? Upon dyno testing the mufflers with a high-flow air cleaner and tuner, Khrome Werks found that they offer an instant 12 percent increase in torque, and 7 percent increase in horsepower over the OE setup. What’s not to like about that?

The Eclipse finish is achieved by using an advanced process that incorporates multistep polishing to create a smooth surface, a multiple-pass cleaning treatment and three layers of nickel plating for improved adhesion and corrosion resistance. Finally, a gleaming layer of proprietary high-temperature black chrome is applied. The result is a stunning and complex surface that doesn’t look quite like anything else on the market.

And, while they produce the company’s signature, authoritative tone, there aren’t any annoying highfrequency noises. In fact, the new 4½-inch slip-on mufflers are available with an optional insert that complies with the SAE J2825 sound test with no appreciable loss of performance.

Khrome Werks is currently offering the Eclipse black chrome finish across a wide range of its products, including exhaust systems, handlebars, engine guards, sissy bars, and other accessories. Check them all out inside the FatBook and OldBook. ■

The mufflers are built right here in the USA, and feature a 16 gauge body, so you know they’re rugged and tough. Inside, the slip-ons feature a new absorptive baffle that’s covered with stainless steel mat and high-temperature fiberglass, a designed developed just for the Milwaukee Eight.

LED LIGHTING

Adaptive LED Lights for Road Glides A graphic illustration of how the light arrays on the Adaptive Series headlights work when a bike is turning.

W

hen J.W. Speaker entered the V-twin motorcycle aftermarket with its game-changing 7-inch LED adaptive beam headlight, the company did so with a product that all but changed what it means to ride at night. More than a standard headlight, the company’s 8790 Adaptive light gives riders the ability to light up the dark areas of corners while going through a bend. Backed by J.W. Speaker’s decades of experience with high-end LED lighting, the 8790 Adaptive redefined what was essentially up to then a bright lightbulb. Now the company is expanding that light-bending technology further into the Bagger market with the new 8692 Adaptive beam LED headlight built specifically for those dual-headlight Harley-Davidson Road Glides. Available exclusively through Drag Specialties, the 8692 Adaptive can be retrofitted on 2013 and earlier Road Glide models by using a custom mounting system. This latest addition to the Adaptive Series™ of motorcycle headlights features those same embedded sensors that work to calculate banking angles while cornering. In real time, those sensors adjust and direct precise beam patterns to areas of the road that would otherwise be dark.

A patent-pending optical design provides an impressive beam pattern and a one-of-a-kind look. It’s almost as if the light from the headlights is bending through the turns, seeking out dark areas that might hold unwanted surprises. The result is an increased level of comfort and confidence for the riders and any potential passengers.

The 8692 Adaptive beam LED headlight comes in a preassembled bucket that’s made to easily install inside a Harley-Davidson Road Glide’s fairing.

Furthermore, the 8692’s low-beam light and its exclusive ComfortLite high beam combine to provide superior illumination for the rider, and make him or her highly visible to others on the road. The 8692 Adaptive beam LED headlight for Road Glides comes as a pre-assembled bucket with mounting hardware for easy installation. It’s a simple plug-andplay setup, too, as the system is compatible with the motorcycle’s stock H4 connector. The headlights are available with black or chrome inner bezels. As an added bonus, J.W. Speaker’s Adaptive Series products are DOT and ECE compliant, meaning they’re street legal anywhere in the world. The 8692 Adaptive is durable; it features a heavy-duty die-cast housing, hardcoated polycarbonate lens, and solid-state electronics. ■

TIRES

Scorchers

Drag Adds Harley OE Model For instance the Scorcher 11 – OE on many Sportsters, Softails, V-Rods and Street models — has a great grip on dry roads and features optimized tread grooves to efficiently evacuate water for a dependable grip in the wet.

Michelin Scorcher tires are OE on Harley-Davidson Dynas and approved fitments for a wide range of Electra Glide, Street Glide and Road Glide models.

E

ndorsements don’t come much better than this. Michelin Scorchers have both the Michelin and Harley-Davidson names on them, and that’s a big deal to a lot of riders.

That co-branding isn’t surprising since these were codeveloped by both companies as original equipment on a number of Sportsters, V-Rods, Streets, Dynas, and they’re the factory-approved replacements for Softails and Touring bikes like the Electra Glide, Street Glide and Road Glide. There is even a special version, the Scorcher 32, designed and custom-engineered exclusively for the Fat Bob. Premium tires with the Bar and Shield logo on the sidewall, the Scorchers have all the styling and handling characteristics Harley-Davidson demands, coupled with Michelin expertise to deliver a tire that’s also comfortable riding and long lasting. Once available only at authorized Harley-Davidson dealerships, Drag Specialties now has them all, the Scorcher 11, 31 and 32. With more than one million Scorcher OE tires on the road today, many Harley riders will be looking for this endorsed and factory-branded replacement tire. With sizes covering a wide range of models, there’s a co-developed, co-branded Harley-Davidson/Michelin for most every Harley bike and rider.

Thanks to a compound derived from Michelin’s championshipwinning race tires the 11s have a newly developed rubber that combines long-life durability with high performance. The Scorcher 11s incorporate Michelin’s latest radial technology for precise handling, easy maneuverability, impressive agility and a long life.

Then there’s the Scorcher 31, OE on all those Dynas and the factory-approved upgrade for popular FL Touring models. With a supple, comfortable-riding casing design coupled with a specifically engineered profile, these tires are nimble handling, especially on winding roads. The 31’s carbon-black enriched rubber compound incorporates all the know-how Michelin has derived from decades of road-racing experience. The payoff is a confidence-inspiring grip on both wet and dry roads coupled with excellent durability without compromising any of that performance. The Scorcher 31s are available in a wide range of sizes, six fronts and four rears. And finally there’s that Scorcher 32. Designed especially for the Fat Bob, generously grooved tread patterns and advanced rubber chemistry add up to excellent traction on wet or dry roads. There’s an innovative and aggressive “reverse” tread design, too, and combined with Michelin compound technology it delivers great tread life and even wear to go with the agile handling and smooth ride. The Michelin name and worldwide reputation for quality and performance is well known. The Harley-Davidson name, endorsement and approval along with that Bar and Shield right on that tire can seal the deal. ■

BIG-BORE KITS

Monster Big-Bore Kits No Replacement for Displacement

Adding a Monster Big-Bore Kit requires motor work like case widening or even a swap out to a new, Stroker crankshaft. For all of this, Revolution Performance can help.

I

t’s an old hot-rod saying and it’s true: There is no replacement for displacement. Big engines make big power, simple as that. That’s the reason why Revolution Performance’s Big-Bore Kits are as popular as they are, and it’s why that bolt-on 107-inch package for HarleyDavidson Twin Cams is its top seller in the lineup. Upping the displacement of a stock 96-incher, and doing it without taking the engine out of the frame or using anything more complex than a handful of wrenches, nets a big payoff. How big? How about an easy 90-plus extra horsepower with a torque number to match? However, for more than a few riders those 107-inch kits are just a beginning. If some is good, more is better. And it’s for them that Revolution has the Monster Big-Bore Kits, conversion packages ramping those V-twin motors up to 114-inches of Twin Cam displacement. Or, if your customers are interested, there are 117-inch-, 124-inch-, 127-inch-, and even a whopping 131-inch kits. Drag Specialties has them all. Revolution can even seriously up the displacement of those popular Sportsters, doing it with 88-inch, 90-inch, 100-inch and 109-inch packages. Going big with a Monster Kit isn’t for the faint of heart, and we’re talking about more than just the pavement-blistering performance they’ll bring to the party. Installation of a Monster Big-Bore Kit requires a considerable mechanical commitment. For starters, every one of these big-inch kits requires the cases to be bored wider to accept those new, bigger cylinders. And, at the very least the crankshafts will need to be strengthened and rebalanced to even

For customers who believe that “more is better” when it comes to displacement, there are the Monster Big-Bore Kits that range in size from 114-inches to a whopping 131-inches.

out the added weight of the bigger, heavier pistons. Those really big motors require the substitution of a completely new, stroker crankshaft. Of course, with this much time, effort and money invested, it’s highly recommended that some serious professional head-flow services and larger camshafts also be factored in. Like we said, going really big is a serious commitment. But, oh what a payoff. Revolution’s Monster Big-Bore Kits offer more than just cubic inches and eye-popping performance, too. There’s serious, cutting-edge technology here. The replacement cylinders, all of them in all the various bore-sizes, are 100 percent aluminum, sleeveless designs that incorporate the exclusive Revolution Performance nickel-silicon-carbide (NSC) electroplated bores. The cylinders also have extra-deep fins to help with cooling. The included specially designed pistons — offered in domed- or flat-top configuration, depending on the application — come with a permanently bonded and moly based Auto-Fit Coating™. The kits are available in a number of finishes, too, Natural, Silver, Black, Black Highlighted and Granite. All of them come complete with cylinders, pistons, pins, rings and clips as part of the package. ■ The kits all come with a lifetime warranty against warping and/or plating defects. Translation: These big-bore packages are going to be there for the long haul.

Clean, Maintain and Protect The Company Behind the Products

Ultimate Xtreme Clean

Star brite’s 300,000 square foot manufacturing and distribution facility in Montgomery, AL.

M

ost in the powersports industry know Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment, but few know Star brite, the company behind the product. Founded 40 years ago, Star brite is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of cleaners, polishes, protectants, motor oils, fuel treatments, lubricants, sealants, and more.

Clean is clearly superior to most all-purpose cleaners that are formulated to be as inexpensive as possible, relying on harsh, caustic ingredients that, over time, can cause surfaces to become dried out or faded. The same technology that makes the marine products work so well is found in every one of Star brite’s powersports products.

Star brite is best known for its extensive lineup of cleaners, protectants and polishes. They are engineered to withstand the harsh saltwater marine environment that produces the toughest conditions on the planet in terms of corrosion, UV and salt damage as well as severe wear and tear.

Star brite has a well-deserved reputation for producing great products at competitive price points. Headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, FL., the company owns and operates a 300,000 sq. ft.-manufacturing and distribution facility in Montgomery, AL.

These 40 years of experience are what set Star brite apart from the typical appearance product company; another difference is the employees. Every product bearing the Star brite brand has been extensively tested, researched and evaluated by employees using their own boats, motorcycles, cars and trucks. As a result, Star brite products tend to be over-engineered.

Unlike firms whose products are created by third-party contract fillers for the price-sensitive automotive market where the main focus is on cutting costs in order to hit price points, Star brite is a prime manufacturer, utilizing the latest technology and ingredients to create products that get the job done without compromise.

Star brite’s mantra consists of three words: Innovation, Technology and Performance. This means finding new ways to clean, maintain and protect, using the most effective ingredients to deliver no-compromise results. As just one example, Ultimate Xtreme Clean is a new allpurpose, all-surface cleaner degreaser, not just another cheap-to-make soapy surfactant. Xtreme Clean utilizes high-tech chelating agents that work their way into the grime to break the bond that holds it to the surface in order to clean just about anything without having to resort to heavy scrubbing. As a result, Xtreme

There are two major advantages to being a prime manufacturer that add value to every product. The first is that Star brite works directly with chemical companies, getting first access to the latest technology and ingredients without going through intermediaries, avoiding the corresponding price markups. Secondly, by avoiding third-party contract fillers, another layer of cost is avoided. These two factors combine to allow Star brite to produce great products at competitive prices. ■

PARTS & ACCESSORIES

The Art of the Part

Detailed Designs from Ken’s Factory USA The company’s mantra is “Details Create Style,” and no one knows that better than Nagai himself. Ken’s Factory started in Japan in 1990 so Nagai could supply customers with aftermarket parts while he continued to build stunning one-off customs. The parts Nagai designs are incorporated into his builds, showing off the possibilities of each one, and he has long been considered a Harley-Davidson specialist.

Inspired custom builder Ken Nagai pays very close attention to the details, an approach to design that’s reflected in Ken’s Factory’s unique line of parts and accessories.

Headlights are among the company’s best sellers. The Neo Fusion is a bucket headlight in both 4½-inch and 5¾-inch sizes. Both the black and polished light housings are available with either a copper or brass ring on the front for even more creativity.

Headlights like the Neo Fusion are among the company’s bestselling products.

E

very part that comes from custom motorcycle builder Ken Nagai is equal parts art and functionality. The attention that goes into every little detail of the design process results in parts that beg for a closer look. Ken’s Factory USA supplies Drag Specialties with parts for Harley-Davidsons that allow the customer to be an artist, too. To keep things interesting there are families of designs, like Dimpled, Vanquish and Neo Fusion, so that mixing and matching is part of the fun and the challenge. Ken’s Factory designs range from the understated to the extreme, which means that parts can be found to suit everything from restoration of a classic model to a one-off custom. Drag Specialties carries a diverse inventory from the California shop that serves as the North American extension for Nagai’s business.

76

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

Most Ken’s Factory USA parts are available in anodized black or polished, as is the case with the Neo Fusion headlight, Dimpled pegs and Vanquish rocker covers.

FEBRUARY 2017

Ken’s Factory has a broad range of dimpled foot pegs. The design effect really pops in the contrasting, black anodized option.

Dimpled foot pegs are machined from billet aluminum and match the Ken’s Factory Dimpled grips. The polished version keeps the dimples looking subtle, but the contrast cut of the black anodized option means that the dimples are a distinct focal point of the peg. Both driver and passenger foot pegs are available in the dimpled design.

The Vanquish rocker covers, which come as a set, are everything that the Vanquish Series stands for. The bold vertical channels on the machined aluminum covers make them stand out in either finish option. The rocker covers are for Twin Cam engines and pair well with other Vanquish Series parts, like mirrors. ■

This is one powerful amp that’s made to kick that OE Harley radio into overdrive. This is a full-range class D digital amp that’s properly shielded against RF interference into the AM or FM stereo radio bands. The amp’s green-band plug-and-play RCA input harnesses included with the kit take the four channels of audio signal from the stock radio and provides four separate channels of amplification at 157.5 watts continuous power per channel into a 2 or 4-ohm speaker load.

or many Bagger riders these days, a ripping audio system is just about as important as a good set of performance pipes or a comfortable, and suitable, seat upgrade. Even Harley-Davidson has upped the ante with its stock Infotainment system. However, just as it is with that exhaust system, that seat, hand controls or other motorcycle components, sure OE is good, but it can always be better. For nearly 40 years the audio experts at J&M Corporation have pushed the limit with motorcycle sound systems, and for 2017 have developed a super powerful 4-channel amplifier for Harley stock Bagger audio. What does that all mean for your customers, who may or may not understand the techno-speak? Quite simply this amp will provide a clear boost to the OE infotainment system, making for crisper, cleaning sound, even at highway speeds. No longer will those tunes get lost in the wind while riding down the road. This single 630w ROKKER XXRP amplifier can drive four, six or eight speakers for your customer’s Bagger audio system. The new ROKKER XXRP series amplifiers are fully programmable, and come out of the box already dialed in for each specific Harley Bagger speaker configuration. Just install, plug it all together, and go. Installation is a snap, too. The Amp attaches to custommade stainless steel brackets that are mounted inside the fairing. The brackets also block amplifier heat from transferring to the radio. Should your customers ever need to upgrade or change the amp’s settings, all custom programs are available as downloads through the J&M website. The upgrades can be done via the built-in programming dongle and USB computer connection. The kits include everything necessary for installation — custom-made heavy-gauge power and ground wires, the mounting hardware and complete instructions. ■

Saddlemen’s new collection of sissybar bags features plenty of storage, which makes them just the ticket for a weekend trip or day ride.

W

hen your customers hit the road for a day ride or a weekend trip, there are always a few things to consider before it’s time for kickstands up. What’s the route (if there is one)? Is the bike squared away? And, is there a place for their stuff? That latter question can be answered with saddlebags and hard luggage, but sometimes riders want to travel light. That’s where Saddlemen’s new trio of sissybar bags comes into play. Not everyone wants a Touring bike or even a set of over-the-hump saddlebags, but most riders need somewhere to stash things when rolling out. All the bags in the lineup are built with a perfect blend of rugged materials that will really stand up to some hard use. The bags are made from tough 3mm and 1mm LeatherTech and feature oversized hardware, a handle and straps that are riveted in place and plenty of space to pack for the journey. The bags each feature a main cargo compartment flap that opens fully for easy loading. All of them can also be used without a rear rack, and have a newly designed adjustable mounting sleeve that adapts to the shape and width of a bike’s sissy bar. A molded organizer makes for a handy and safe stash spot for a smartphone or other valuables. Saddlemen made it easy to attach bungee cords or other straps to the bags by including multiple oversized

The bags come in three different sizes, and all of them feature a shoulder strap for easy carrying when the bag is off the bike. The largest of the bags also includes a top roll bag for extra cargo capacity, and has top cargo straps for mounting the roll bag or for strapping down a jacket or other gear. ■ THE SIZES OF SADDLEMEN’S NEW SISSYBAR BAGS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

This new approach provides hands-on interaction with the products for the dealers during the training stops, and for consumers at dealer-hosted events like open houses and local rallies. Dealers can talk directly with the vendors about special installation or fitment information and give them a real-world example of what the parts look like on the bikes.

F

or 2017, Drag Specialties is launching an intensive effort to take product and sales training directly to its dealers with the Exclusive Dealer Training Tour.

Scheduled to stop at 24 locations in every major metro market across the country, the tour will feature product presentations from 15 popular Drag vendors, as well as the opportunity to get some serious face time with vendor reps and hands-on experience with hot, new aftermarket products. “I think that this is going to be a game changer for our dealers. We’ve wanted to do this for a couple of years and now it seems like the perfect time,” says Jim Matchette, Drag Specialties national sales manager. “It’s time for us to shift it into overdrive and make an intensive effort to bring training to the dealers. We’ve got great brands, and we’ve got support for the presentations. We’re not going to waste our dealers’ time.” The tour is also tied into Drag Specialties’ dealer open house semi program, which will be available to dealers in conjunction with the training tour. In lieu of the typical vendor product displays, Drag will have a number of latemodel Harley-Davidson motorcycles on hand — each outfitted from fender-to-fender with new products — to serve as “rolling showrooms.” Touring vendors include Bassani, Custom Dynamics, Dunlop, Hogtunes, J.W. Speaker, Khrome Werks, Klock

82

Werks, LA Choppers, MagnaFlow, Memphis Shades, Metzler/Pirelli, Michelin, Revolution Performance, S&S Cycle, and Saddlemen.

The tour will also offer dealers a treasure trove of discounts. Drag Specialties itself is offering discounts for 15 vendors for two weeks following each tour stop. Vendors will offer additional discounts exclusively for those dealers attending the training. A typical tour stop will open with food and refreshments and then move into vendor presentations and then the latest industry information regarding Drag Specialties from the area Regional Sales Manager. After the session wraps up, everyone is invited outside to check out the “rolling showroom” of bikes. “For example, the dealers will have the chance to enjoy food and refreshments with Brian Klock and then check out a Klock Werks bike and ask Brian about the features of a Flare windshield or how to install a particular fender or set of handlebars,” Matchette says. “I don’t think there’s any other way these dealers would get that real hands-on experience.” This face-to-face interaction and hands-on training also serves to strengthen the relationships between vendors, dealers and sales reps, Matchette says. This is something they’ve seen happen on the Drag Dealer Rides, where bonds forged among attendees have grown into real friendships that last all year long, he adds. “I think the timing is really right for this. I mean, what better time to do it, and what better company to do it? Drag Specialties is the industry leader,” Matchette says. “We’re welcoming all dealers, big and small. We welcome them all.” ■

LUGGAGE

Sizing Up

Extended Bags for the Long Haul Drag Specialties has two different size extended saddlebags, each offering not only a custom look, but added storage space.

The 4-inch saddlebags have a 4-inch extension across the entire bottom of the bag, while the smaller bags have a 2.71-inch extension across the bottom. Both feature dual exhaust cutouts so that they are compatible with both stock and custom exhausts. While the storage volume is larger, the lids are still identical to OEM size. That means the extended saddlebags can be paired with all OEM or aftermarket lids, hardware, latches and tethers.

The 4-inch saddlebags will fit 2014-17 FLHT, FLHR, FLHX and FLTRX models. The 2.71-inch option is compatible with 1993-2013 FLT, FLHT, FLHR and FLTR models.

Special block-off panels are available for customers running a 2-into-1 exhaust.

H

aving all the gear needed for touring is great, but you also need space for storing all of it. Drag Specialties has two varieties of extended saddlebags for Harley-Davidsons to provide the right amount of storage and the right configuration for your customers’ needs and bike model. Drag also has installation hardware and other luggage options to ensure the right setup for a journey. Bolt-on extended saddlebags are offered in 4-inch and 2.71-inch options. Both OEM-style sizes are made with the same material that Harley-Davidson uses for its stock saddlebags and lids. The bags are strong, hold their shape and are easy to paint. In fact, they need just minimal prep before paint can be applied.

Drag Specialties offers up hardware kits that contain everything needed to install either its extended saddlebags or Tourbox and Tourbox lid.

Drag Specialties offers individual saddlebag blockoff panels for bikes with a custom exhaust, such as a 2-into-1 system. The panels fill in the existing saddlebag exhaust cutouts and are sold in both left- and right-side applications. Each one is precision formed to match the cutouts on the bags and is made from the same material. They should be professionally bonded to the bags, and require some minor bodywork before painting. Mounting the extended saddlebags is made possible with the Drag Specialties saddlebag hardware kit, compatible with 2014 and later FL models. It includes everything needed to assemble and mount OEM-style hard saddlebags and saddlebag lids — a pair of tethers for the lids, a complete fastener kit, gaskets for the lids (sold each), a striker kit, a pair of locks, hinge kits for both the left and right side bags, and a pack of four rubber cushions. Riders who need even more storage capacity than what the extended saddlebags offer can add the Drag Specialties precision Tourbox and Tourbox lid. Both are a direct bolt-on replacement for the OEM items and are made from the same materials. Mounting holes are already drilled, and the rear portion of the box has cutouts marked for installation of corner lights. A Drag Specialties Tour-Pak hardware kit has everything necessary to install the Tourbox and lid or a HarleyDavidson OEM Tour-Pak. The kit comes in two versions: one that includes matching-key locks for the Tour-Pak and two saddlebags, and one without locks. Both kits are available for 2006-13 models. ■

BODY STYLING

Stretched Bike, Not Budget Snap-On Covers for a Custom Look

Drag Specialties’ snap-on tank cover and side covers provide a sleek, custom look that’s affordable and easy to install.

C

ustomizing a motorcycle can be expensive, time-intensive and, let’s be honest, a real hassle. Riders who want a stretched and slammed look for their bagger don’t need to swap out expensive components or do a total rebuild. A set of aftermarket shocks, like the Drag Specialties premium shocks, can lower a bike without breaking the bank. And, that stretched look can be achieved by simply adding Drag Specialties snap-on side covers and a bolton tank cover. The covers, manufactured by Baggster, are designed to integrate seamlessly with the stock saddlebags and seat for a flawless optical illusion. The bolt-on tank cover fits an array of 1998-2017 HarleyDavidson Baggers. The sleek 24-inch long cover bolts right over the stock tank. It gives the illusion of an aftermarket stretched tank, but it costs far less since there is no tank swap required. The cover is made of injection-molded polyurethane, and it arrives ready for prep and painting so it can be colormatched to the stock paint or to a custom theme. The tank cover reuses the stock Dresser dash and fits with the stock seat, so there is no compromise on either fitment or style. Installation is easy, too — no modifications are necessary. Just bolt on and go forth! (Note that some aftermarket seats may not fit the tank cover properly,

86

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2017

so double-check compatibility if your customer is using anything other than the stock seat.) The side covers from Drag Specialties are flared for extra style points, and they are a direct snap-on replacement for the stock covers. They will fit a variety of 1997-2017 Harley-Davidson Baggers, so check with your Drag Specialties rep for the available applications. While the tank covers pair seamlessly with the stock seat, the side covers pair with the stock length saddlebags. Installation is incredibly easy; the true snap-on style means there is no trimming, shaping, gluing or drilling required. Simply remove the OEM stock side covers and replace with the new, stretched covers. They are sold in pairs and, just as with the tank covers, the injectionmolded polyurethane is ready for prep and painting. In addition to providing an affordable option for aftermarket customization, the bolt-on tank cover and snap-on side covers are a great combination for a rider who wants the look of a stretched motorcycle while still maintaining the easy rideability and comfort of a stock setup. Used singly, together or mixed-and-matched with other parts and accessories, a rider can achieve a unique look without overspending. ■

Reliability in a Voltage Regulator

M

ost motorcycle riders know the frustration of having an electrical part fail. One small part bites the dust, and you’re sidelined. When it comes to faulty electrical components, there is rarely an easy fix.

Dealers can find a number of fitments for Drag Specialties voltage regulators inside the FatBook and OldBook.

And, when it comes to broken voltage regulators, there is no fix at all because the unit is sealed and has to be completely replaced. Drag Specialties aims to keep riders on the road with its branded premium USA-made voltage regulators, which are designed for reliability and longevity. Drag Specialties premium voltage regulators can be used as OE replacements, but they are also a great choice for custom builders and DIY mechanics looking for a reliable and easily-installed voltage regulator to keep an old bike running or help light the spark in a new one. They provide accurately regulated voltage under all electrical loads.

VOLTAGE REGULATORS

It’s Electric

The voltage regulator’s small size belies the huge amount of work that went into its creation. It is the result of two years of design and development, all undertaken with the goal of creating a regulator that has outstanding performance, reliability and heat management. The attention to detail that went into the design did not stop when the final product was approved. During the assembly process, every voltage regulator undergoes three tests to ensure there are no hindrances to its reliability and performance. The assembly happens close to home, too — the voltage regulators are made in the USA, using domestic-made circuit boards, so it is easier for Drag Specialties to manage quality control.

Dealers and parts counter staff will be happy to know the Drag Specialties voltage regulators come in the brand’s Premium Packaging, perfect for on-shelf display.

One of the factors that had to be considered during development of the Drag Specialties voltage regulator was heat. Heat is the worst enemy of electrical components, but it’s also an inevitable by-product of a voltage regulator’s job. Each premium voltage regulator is designed for superior internal heat management so that it can withstand even the most extreme conditions. The result is that the regulator has better reliability for continued outstanding performance. Drag Specialties offers the premium voltage regulators in a chrome or black finish for the all-aluminum die-cast housing, and fitments are available for all early- and latemodel applications.

In addition to the premium quality of the regulators, each one is housed in Drag Specialties Premium Packaging, which makes the product easy to spot at a glance and presents an attractive package that is ready for merchandizing. ■

Affordable Shock Upgrades Premium Package, Premium Product

A

ftermarket suspension can make a big difference in how a motorcycle looks and feels, but it can also come with a big price tag. Drag Specialties believes that making a suspension upgrade should be both affordable and easy, and that a rider should have options when it comes to suspension settings.

Drag Specialties’ lineup of shock absorbers includes ride-height adjustable shocks and 10½-inch shocks. All of them offer premium features and a great value.

The Drag Specialties premium line of shock absorbers includes ride-height adjustable shocks and slammed 10½inch shocks. Both of the shock options allow riders to get quality and control without the high price. Adjustable ride height and preload settings are part of the package, offering flexibility so riders can dial in the perfect shock setup. Both shocks arrive ready to display in Premium Drag packaging. The upscale design of the packaging not only denotes products in Drag’s premium category, but it also means dealers can confidently display the shocks without worrying about the aesthetic looking junky or cluttered. In addition to the shocks, Drag’s Premium packaging can be found on the company’s USA-made voltage regulators and Premium Performance batteries. The ride-height adjustable shocks from Drag Specialties come in 11-inch, 12-inch and 13-inch lengths. They fit a variety of new and old models, including the 1984-2016 Harley-Davidson FLT/FLHT/FLHR/FLTR, 1991-2016 FXD/ FXDWG and the 2004-16 XL. The adjustable shocks are made from nitrogen-charged steel monotube damper bodies with hard chrome-plated shafts. Dual-rate progressive wound springs ensure that the ride will be a smooth one. Ride-height settings have half-inch adjustability either up or down from the size listed for the shock. For an even more custom setting, the spring preload can also be adjusted. The 10½-inch shocks from Drag Specialties fit 2004-16 Harley-Davidson XL models. The shocks in this line have steel dual tube hydraulic damper bodies with hard chrome shafts. Dual-rate progressive springs and adjustable preload round out the shock to create not only a premium product, but also a premium ride. Color options for both Drag premium shock lines are chrome and black. The chrome option has chrome springs and damper bodies with clear anodized billet aluminum end caps. The black color option, on the other hand, is just that — completely blacked out for an understated look. Don’t look for any little screws or other bits of hardware floating around in the Drag Premium Packaging: Drag’s premium shocks mount with the existing hardware to make the suspension swap easy. ■

Custom Comfort and Quality Since 1972

Talk with your sales rep about Drag Specialties seats’ custom order program, and the available counter display and material swatch sampler.

C

hanging the seat on a Harley-Davidson is one of the first moves a rider makes. A quick scan of the aftermarket turns up plenty of options, too, but have they, or have you, for that matter, taken a good look at the Drag Specialties seats? This lineup of custom seats has the style, features, build quality, options, and materials that really stand out. In fact, the sheer volume of available styles and applications is amazing. Make no mistake; these seats are custom, each one handmade in Rogers, MN. and each one is available at a friendly price. Do yourself and your customers a favor, take a good, long look at the Drag Specialties seats. You’ll be pleasantly surprised. Here’s another surprise. All this is nothing new. Drag Specialties brand seats have been available since way back in 1972, back when Drag acquired E&S Coach and Saddlery, a noted North East Minneapolis upholstery shop. Kevin Lehan, who heads up this Drag Specialties division joined the operation in 1974, and, as trends and tastes evolved over the years, so did the offerings of the Drag Specialties seat company. Today’s lineup includes it all — the low-profile touring seats so popular now, the dual backrest seats, single driver backrest seats, the Predator style seats, extended

reach seats for Baggers and Sportsters, café style seats and the latest, the Drag Specialties Caballeros. There are also spring-mount solo seats kits for Sportsters, Dynas and Shovelheads, along with more great blasts from the past for builders turning back the clock. This is just a partial list of what’s available here style-wise. There’s even a full custom-seat order program, seats available in seven different thread colors, seven different stitch patterns and 18 different materials. Along with all those styles and options you and your customers will want to take note of the quality here. It begins with the seat bases. Formed to fit with tough, 3/16-inch ABS plastic, they incorporate chrome-plated mounting brackets, zinc-plated internal parts and, in most applications, they’re 100 percent carpeted for protection. Drag Specialties seats also include rubber bumpers for even more paint protection. Most of the seats are formed with specially formulated urethane foam that’s mixed to Lehan’s exacting specifications, and the covering materials are also made to his specs. These are heavy-duty materials rated for outdoor use and motorcycle application, precision die-cut for absolute consistency so they fit like a glove. And then there’s the

Solar Reflective Leather that Drag Specialties offers. It’s used on more than 90 percent of the seats, and on all the black-leather models. Solar Reflective Leather keeps those seats cool and comfortable on even the hottest days. With Solar Reflective Leather the seat maintains a temperature equivalent to one that’s been parked in the shade, and this material doesn’t heat up while riding on it. When it comes to quality, craftsmanship and materials a rider is getting quite a bit more than he’s paying for here. All the engineering and development is done in-house, too, right there in Rogers, MN. From the initial design concept to the finished product the Drag Specialties crew is 100 percent in control. Anyone who handles a seat as it’s being assembled can reject that seat if it’s not up to par, and there’s an all-encompassing final check before any seat goes in the box. ■

racks feature a proprietary quick release and locking mechanism. This allows the backrests to be installed and removed in seconds, thus maintaining the strength and look of a standard, bolt-up sissy bar. Instead of an over-complicated locking mechanism, Cobra uses a neatly machined aluminum pull pin. The proprietary mounting system works either with the standard Harley-Davidson docking kit, or Cobra’s own. For Baggers the luggage rack is its own detachable piece. Cobra has completely re-engineered its True Dual head pipe system to work with the new Milwaukee Eight motor. They work with the stock mufflers, provide more power and run cooler.

C

obra is always looking to be better. Case in point: Rather than rush a new headpipe to market for the 2017 Harley-Davidson Bagger lineup, the company decided more work was needed in order to deliver a product that looked and performed every bit as good as the new engine from Harley.

The Dyna, Sportster and Softail versions use Cobra’s mounting hardware, and the optional luggage racks bolt directly to the detachable sissy bar. Everything needed for installation arrives in one box — the mounting kit, the side plates, the backrest, the pad, and the chromed backrest insert. They are available in both chrome and black.

“We reworked our proven headpipe design to perform even better under the greater demands of the new 2017 Milwaukee Eight motor,” said Tim McCool, president of Cobra Engineering. “We learned pretty quickly that using last year’s products was not going to get it done.” What looks like a traditional True Dual system is actually a much more complex arrangement. In fact, Cobra’s headpipes* take an unexpected approach beneath the heat shields, a design that’s apparent by the new ovalized collector heat shield in the area where the PowrPort was previously located. In the new design, the headpipes route spent exhaust gasses into an ellipsoid pulse chamber, where those churning gasses accelerate before exiting equally into the left side and right side exhausts, producing improved scavenging and more power — all while running cooler than the stock system. The headpipes are designed to work with the stock mufflers on the 2017 Baggers, or with Cobra’s mufflers for the 2017 models. They are available in black or chrome versions.

DETACHABLE SISSY BARS AND LUGGAGE RACKS For customers who may want the versatility of a backrest and luggage rack, but don’t like the look when riding solo, Cobra’s new detachable backrests and luggage

Cobra’s new detachable backrests and luggage racks feature a proprietary quick release and locking mechanism. This allows the backrests to be installed and removed in seconds.

POWRPRO BLACK* Cobra’s new Fi2000 PowrPro Black makes tuning a motorcycle a snap. The PowrPro Black is a direct plug-andplay unit, designed specifically for the 2017 Baggers. No downloading maps hoping the correct one is installed, or having to dyno tune a bike. The PowrPro Black tunes a bike’s fuel continuously by measuring the rate of acceleration through an onboard accelerometer, making adjustments up to 80 times per second, allowing a bike to run at the best air-to-fuel ratio possible. The PowrPro Black has a Bluetooth app with plenty of adjustments that can be made outside of the acceleration zone. ■

Leather and Steel New Parts, Vintage Cool

There’s no mistaking where these Slugger pegs get their namesake. Designed to resemble the end of a baseball bat, they are available in a raw or black finish.

Ah the hammer, the original universal tool. Nash makes a custom ball-peen version that is just the ticket for a saddlebag or tool kit.

The Midget El Gringo Bars offer a unique accent to a custom build. Dimpled, drilled and knurled, they’re ready for action.

I

f your customers like the look and feel of raw steel, iron or brass hand-crafted parts, custom bars that evoke a bygone era, or even vintage leather kidney belts, then take a look at the products from Nash Motorcycle Co.

These bars are a smaller version of Nash’s El Gringo Bars. The Midget version has a 9-inch base for narrow glide front ends. They come with 5-inch pullback, measure 29-inches grip to grip and have a 4-inch height, with a welded cross bar for extra stability.

Dedicated to building bikes and parts that have a handmade feel, Nash creates one-of-a-kind ground-up custom choppers, Bobbers and hot rod bikes, often mixing the old with the new. Most of the company’s work is dedicated to manufacturing its unique line of custom parts as well as coming up with new and innovative products for your customers.

These bars come dimpled, drilled and knurled as well, and can accommodate throttle-by-wire applications for those newer model bikes. Sell it with a Nash Sticky Throttle, or run stock controls — the Midget El Gringos will look unique no matter what. They are available in chrome or satin black. That’s just one set of bars, the list of custom handlebars from Nash is long and offers something for almost every customer who walks in your front door.

Take the Nash version of a kidney belt. It’s designed to evoke how they used to be made back in the day. These belts support the lower back, abdomen and kidneys when riding any distance and are handmade from high quality leather and come in black or natural. The straps on the belt are sewn and riveted on for extra strength and they look great with options of nickel or brass buckles. That’s just one item from their leather line. Nash also offers single sided saddlebags, fork sacks and hangers for the company’s unique custom hammers. When it comes to handlebars, Nash Motorcycle Co. offers a line designed right off their award winning custom built machines. The company takes the best parts from custom bikes like “El Gringo” and put into production replicas like its new Midget El Gringo Bars.

There are even more cool custom products, like Slugger foot pegs, designed to replicate the end of a baseball bat and keep your customers’ feet securely on the pegs. Slugger pegs are made in the USA, and are available in 6½-inch and 4½-inch pairs with raw or black finish. They even offer a Nash hammer fitted with a 100 percent hickory handle with two finishes to choose from, polished brass or polished stainless. This is all available through Drag Specialties for 2017. ■

High Quality Control Modules

Every NAMZ/Badlands lighting module features a sticker that highlights the product’s lifetime warranty.

Everything is still made right here in the USA, from the initial design and engineering to the actual manufacturing, all done in the NAMZ Pennsylvania shop. Along with all the original applications and functions, there are plenty of new items in the FatBook.

Under the ownership of NAMZ, the entire line of Badlands custom lighting modules has been redesigned to have more functions, more features and to be more reliable than ever.

B

adlands Motorcycle Products is a name familiar to anyone who’s ever needed a custom lighting module for a Harley-Davidson. For 27 years that company, started in a small Reno, NV shop back in 1990, was the go-to source. Well, in December 2013 Badlands became part of the NAMZ Custom Cycle Products family, another name well known when it comes to motorcycle electronics. Now those Badlands modules have been redesigned to be extra-user friendly. There are more applications, more functions, more features and they’re more reliable than ever. In fact, those NAMZ/Badlands modules feature a less than 1 percent failure rate. What does this mean to you and your customers? Well, first of all it means that when you need a module to complete a custom lighting installation it’ll be available. NAMZ spent more than a year redesigning all of the original Badlands modules, a process that not only made them

94

simpler and more reliable, it also streamlined the manufacturing process. They’re in the Drag Specialties warehouses and ready to ship.

All the CAN/Bus models, 2011 and up Softails, 2012 and later Dynas and all the 2014 and up models using aftermarket LEDs not compatible with the factory’s CAN/ Bus Body Control Module, the BCM, will indeed require the use of new CAN/Bus load equalizers. NAMZ/Badlands also has the separate modules that are required for the front and rear signals, which are independent of each.

For running four-wire LEDs (running light, brake light, turn signal with ground wire) on the new CAN/Bus model bikes there are the NAMZ/ Badlands IHL-04 Modules. This family of modules removes the brake-light feature from the left- and right turn signal wire thus providing a traditional output of running light, brake light and left and right turn signals. NAMZ/Badlands also has brand-new modules offering sequential turn signal flashing and there are ATS selfcanceling turn-signal modules using speed-sensing technology just like factory modules. Modules are a big part of any custom lighting setup and NAMZ/Badlands has them all. There’s a Lifetime Warranty, except for the LE-01 and LE-02 units, and there is a full warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Each module features a sticker showing that lifetime warranty and allowing NAMZ to track every module produced. ■

Custom Designs Reshape the Mold

The new lineup of handlebars from Misfit Industries – including the Street Rage and the Brawler bars – offers plenty of comfort, control and custom styling.

T

he team at Misfit Industries operates its business with a high level of integrity, and is passionate about the work. Misfit knows what it likes about motorcycles and the company designs and builds bikes that it finds pleasing. Happily for the rest of us, what the crew over at Misfit likes to build is pretty impressive. Just take a look at the company’s handlebars. The bars are fully swedged, even at the riser mount, which means they’re completely smooth inside, plus slotted and drilled for internal wiring. This allows for a cleaner look with less clutter from wires and cables. The company is known for a very clean sense of styling and comfort, and your customers will enjoy the custom look and feel of the Road Rage bars, Brawler bars, and Street Rage bars. A nice engineering touch is that Street Rage bars require no cable swap on 2014 and newer bikes and Road Rage bars require no cable swaps for Touring and Softail models. Misfit steel fenders are outstanding as well. Take the tirehugging steel front fender made from14-gauge steel. This fender is a direct bolt-on replacement that requires no drilling or modifications to install thanks to the use of precision deep-draw stamping technology and a 5-axis laser that ensures a consistently smooth and flawless finish. This important process will end up saving your customers money at the paint booth. The 14-gauge steel is thick enough to add rigidity to the front-end by acting like

a fork brace, but it can still be cut or shaped for a more desirable appearance. Misfit offers a full 180-degree fender, so there is plenty of material to work with for custom styling. The company also offers fitment for Softail and custom applications using its 2014-up touring fender in 21-inch, 23-inch, 26inch, and 30-inch sizes. Like other Misfit products, its exhaust names are as epic as the pipes are hot. The *Nasty Bastard not only makes a statement with style, but also with outstanding performance and sound. How much performance? Misfit claims it provides 12 to 15 horsepower gain. The exhaust is offered in a variety of fitments and finishes as well. The 2-into-1 design is as much art as it is engineering. This is just a sample of Misfits’ line of quality products, many of which are patented. Made in the USA, everything is designed in-house at Misfit’s headquarters in Texas from scratch, and fabricated through processes such as CNC machining, deep draw metal stamping and production welding. ■

EXHAUSTS

Baritones and Rip Rods Cool Sound, Great Looks Designed to resemble the classic look of a vintage microphone, the new Baritone slip-ons will add plenty of performance as well as a slick, unique profile.

F

irebrand is a place where passion meets cutting edge, and innovation drives the company. The company’s first product, the Loose Cannon slip-on, was designed to offer the rider a uniquely styled exhaust that not only looked great, but also sounded and performed aggressively.

The pipe’s end caps can be rotated to four different positions, allowing for even more customization. Equipped with 2½-inch perforated core baffles wrapped in dual density packing, Baritones belt out a deep bass note that blends perfectly with the soundtrack of your customer’s machine. As with all Firebrand products, Baritone slip-ons are hand crafted with pride in Anaheim, CA.

The company continues to focus on the engineering details that really make a difference, resulting not only in great looking pipes that perform, but pipes that deliver all of that at a good value. The Loose Cannon was just the first in a full pipeline of products.

Sportsters are wonderful machines and look great right out of the showroom. However, most of your customers inevitably want to personalize their rides. The new Rip Rod slip-ons from Firebrand are all edge, rebellion, and attitude.

Plus, Firebrand is not just an exhaust company; the full name “Firebrand Design” was chosen for a reason. Firebrand is here to change the industry, and exhausts are just the beginning.

The Rip Rod’s retro style ripple pipe and old school end caps deliver a modern variation on the glory days when guys chopped, channeled and raced whatever they could get their hands on to prove who was coolest. Rip Rod slip-ons feature 2¼-inch rippled muffler bodies that match up ideally to the stock heat shields, and are finished off with hot rod style billet end caps for a clean, narrow look.

The sweet music of a finely tuned Harley-Davidson can be made even sweeter by Firebrand’s Baritone slip-ons. The Baritone will not only enhance the ride of your customer’s bike, but will also enhance the look. They were designed to resemble the unmistakable profile of a vintage microphone.

Internally, 1¾-inch maintenance-free spiral louver core baffles deliver that distinct classic sound. Whether they choose show quality chrome with black ceramic tips, or black with gold ceramic tips, your customers will have the peace of mind knowing they own hand crafted, American made parts. ■

The new Baritone is now available with show quality chrome or black ceramic mufflers, and with a choice of chrome, black or contrast cut billet end caps. The Baritone 4-inch slip-ons fit all Touring models, including Tri-Glides and those with extended and skirted bags. A Freewheeler specific version is also available.

GRIPS

Memory Foam Grips Grab a Handful of Comfort

Avon Grips’ Memory Foam grips provide all-day comfort, and come in a variety of designs.

F

or years the team at Avon Grips has been asked, “What’s the softest, most comfortable grip you make?” Your store has probably fielded that same question more than a few times, too. When it comes to custom grips, looks are important, but comfort is also right up at the top of that list. Avon’s Memory Foam Grips, introduced at the 2016 Sturgis rally answer both those needs. The looks are here and so is the comfort, and riders were quick to agree. Memory Foam Grips quickly became the best-sellers in the Avon Grips lineup, and by a wide margin. Drag Specialties has them and any rider looking at new grips needs to know about them. While most every grip in the Avon Grips lineup is comfortable, the Memory Foam grips are something special. Unlike ordinary rubber grips, where the softer you make them the less durable they become, Memory Foam Grips are just the opposite. They’re made with Ethylene-Vinal Acetate (EVA), the same material found on the soles of most sneakers and used to make Croc shoes. Soft and comfortable, it’s an extremely durable material. It’s chemical resistant, it doesn’t get sticky as it ages and it can be molded into grips just as soft and comfortable as Avon wanted these grips to feel.

The Memory Foam has a cool feel to it, too, and Avon has given it a non-abrasive texture that lets your hands breathe. The texture also offers a good grip in the rain or in hot/humid conditions. The result of all this is a soft, comfortable, durable and chemical-resistant grip, that also seriously dampens vibrations. Given all that, it’s hardly a surprise Memory Foam grips became as popular as they did as quickly as they did. All that cool, soft, vibration-damping comfort is matched with some pretty good looks, too. Memory Foam Grips are offered in a couple of styles, with clean and almost traditional ends and with custom spikes. Both styles are available in chrome or with a black anodized finish. Memory Foam Grips are available in small, medium and large sizes, so there’s a grip with a fit comfortable for all hand sizes. Since the Memory Foam grip’s low-key introduction at the 2016 Sturgis Rally, the grips have jumped into the number one selling spot for Avon Grips. Take a look, grab hold and you’ll see why. ■

The Littlest Charger that Could!

T

he Drag Specialties OptiMate 1 (p/n 3807-0316) has undergone improvements to make it easier for dealers to sell this quality product. The new attractive packaging showcases the high-quality Drag Specialties OptiMate 1 perfectly at the counter or on a rack or wall, and is sure to generate that important consumer impulse buy. Best news of all, the retail price remains the same, $39.95! High quality cable accessories are included. The O-04 battery clip is custom-designed to grip onto flat, square or round battery posts and the O-01D weatherproof battery cable (-40°F rated 18AWG 15A fuse) comes with ¼-inch rings that perfectly fit powersport battery hardware. A rubber boot and cap seals the SAE connector against water and dust. The OptiMate 1’s key strength is the unique OptiMate 24-7-365 maintenance program. OptiMate’s “connect and forget/no more problems” claim has been proven and appreciated by millions of riders worldwide.

The OptiMate maintenance program does not cycle the battery, it automatically connects and disconnects every hour, always monitoring and then replacing only the charge drained in that previous hour. The longer you leave the battery connected the stronger it becomes.

The Drag Specialties OptiMate 1 now features new packaging, making it easier for dealers to display and merchandize the charger.

A special low volt pulse mode can ‘wake up’ the battery from as low as 4 Volts before it delivers constant current charge. If the battery is too far gone, this smart little charger simply won’t green light that battery — it warns the rider that their battery cannot hold charge. ■

A Lift and a Push

Building a Better Valvetrain

Feuling’s HP+ and Race Series pushrods are a popular upgrade over stock, especially when paired with a hot new set of cams.

C

am swaps are a popular upgrade, next on the list after pipes, air filters and a computer re-map. Performance cams wake up a Harley-Davidson like nothing else, but too often riders shortchange themselves during that swap. They’ll leave lifters and pushrods out of the picture, re-using the OE originals. The result is often a cam set designed for performance that’s not allowed to reach its potential. Feuling Parts, performance gurus who live and breathe this stuff, know this all too well. At Feuling, performance lifters and pushrods become a mandatory addition to every engine they build. Consider the HP+ and Race Series hydraulic lifters they offer.

These are drop-in replacements for OE; their internals have been optimized with a slower bleed-down rate for valvetrain stability with higher lift/longer duration cams. They even increase the oil flow to the top end, lubrication for the valves, springs, rockers, shafts and valve guides. Everything from the external bodies to the rollers, axles and all that internal valving is precision machined to the tightest tolerances. Applications cover engines ranging from the Evos to the Twin Cams to the newest Milwaukee Eights. If your customers are swapping out cams for a racier setup, point them towards Feuling’s HP+ and Race Series hydraulic lifters.

What about the pushrods? Too often lightweight, quick-install pushrods will be so weak they’ll flex under use. Besides creating lots of unnecessary noise (that flexing can get so bad the pushrods will actually come in contact with the heads and lifter-blocks) that new .543 cam just installed has suddenly become a .510 or less. All that flexing and length change plays havoc on the lifters, springs and valvetrain as a whole — everything gets confused. Feuling’s solution is the HP+ and Race Series pushrods, pushrods with up to a .120-inch wall thickness that are available in individual lengths – intake and exhaust – to keep adjustment extensions to a minimum. A double jam-nut locking system keeps it all snug. ■

»» Next time a customer is changing cams, installing some Feuling Reapers, for instance, slide a set of lifters and pushrods up on the counter and tell him why. Talk with your Drag rep for all the details and get more information at www.feulingparts.com.

Brake Pads with a Difference

H

ard-charging sportbike riders know that high-performance brake pads are just about mandatory for shorter, surer stopping distances. Often enough, all this comes from DP Brakes’ HH+ pads, which are built for fade-free operations, even with heavy riding. Now all that performance is available for Harley-Davidson riders. That DP advantage also includes longevity as the HH+ Harley-Davidson brake pads can last up to up three times longer than OE. And, those powerful, long-lasting DPs are squeal free and they’re gentle on the rotors. Your Harley customers – some of whom are known to spend as much time polishing a bike as riding it – will also appreciate that the DP brake pads are virtually dust free. No more brake dust messing up the look of those high-end wheels, tires, rotors and calipers.

With DP Brakes HH+ pads, Harley-Davidson riders can get the same aggressive, no-fade braking performance enjoyed by hard-charging sportbike riders.

All this is reason enough to explain DP’s popularity. Aftermarket caliper suppliers Performance Machine and HHI even include DP Brakes in their loaded calipers. For them DP is original equipment. Top-level performance, long life, quiet operation, dust free, competitive pricing — there’s a lot to like with DP and Drag Specialties has the full Harley lineup. ■

Flow Central High-Performance Fuel Injectors

Daytona Twin Tec’s high-performance fuel injectors are available in 10 different flow-rates for both throttle-cable and throttleby-wire Harley-Davidsons, going back to 2001.

D

aytona Twin Tec likes to say they do one thing and they do it well. That “one thing,” of course, is modern engine management, the electronic control of a Harley-Davidson’s ignition and fuel-injection systems.

The Twin Tec lineup of modules, controllers, diagnostic and testing equipment is well known and respected. The company’s products are USAdesigned and manufactured and have been available at Drag Specialties for years. Now, with a complete lineup of high-performance fuel injectors, Daytona Twin Tec has gotten right to the heart of those Harley fuel-injection systems. The Daytona Twin Tec high-performance injector lineup includes injectors for the earliest 2001 through 2005 Harley models, for the 2006 and later throttle-cable bikes, and for the newest 2008 and up throttle-by-wire models. In that wide mix there are 10 different flow-rates offered ranging from 4.5 grams/ second to 10.6 grams/second, spray angles of 18 degrees and 25 degrees. Every one is made in the USA using the very latest injector technology. They’re sold in matched sets and each set comes with a detailed test report included. The injectors are tested from 8 to18 volts, and at 40 to 100 psi, documenting the exact flow depending on the rate of fuel delivery. Daytona Twin Tec has made choosing the right pair of high-performance injectors easy, too. Recommendations are given for each model injector in each application, broken down by engine horsepower and whether that engine is naturally aspirated or boosted with a turbocharger or supercharger. ■

othing’s more frustrating, or messy, than a leaking gasket or seal. Or worse yet a replacement that doesn’t fix the problem. The late James Clark, “the Godfather of gaskets,” knew that and the result was James Gaskets, Inc., the company he created that has grown to produce a comprehensive and relied upon lineup of gaskets and seals for Harley-Davidsons.

James Gaskets’ all-in-one Fork Seal Kits include everything needed to reseal and rebuild a set of Harley-Davidson forks.

They fit right, seal tight and include a full selection of washers, seals, covers, screws, O-rings, plugs, caps and retaining clips for every Harley-Davidson fork going all the way back to models from the late ’40s. James Gaskets’ all-in-one Fork Seal Kits are right there in the FatBook and OldBook. Taking all the work and worry out of putting together the correct assortment of parts needed for a particular re-seal job, the Fork Seal Kits come with everything needed all in one box.

Applications cover everything, we’re talking FLs, FXs, XLs, V-Rods and Trikes from the ’40s right up to present-day models and everything included is high quality. All of this is available under one part number, making for a quick and easy selection. Getting halfway through a re-seal job only to discover one critical piece of the puzzle missing is pretty frustrating, too. That won’t happen here. You know your customers and you know the kits they’ll ask for. ■

hether it’s a big-inch/high-power HarleyDavidson, a loaded-down Bagger or an ordinary, everyday commuter Harley, the clutches in those bikes get a workout.

The result is often a worn-out or cracked clutch basket. But if that bike is a 2007 through 2016 Big Twin, or a 2006 and later Dyna, the fix is as close as Barnett and the FatBook. The Scorpion Clutch Basket is an easily installed and cost effective replacement, and a tough, precisionmade upgrade. Machined from 2024-T3 billet aluminum and hard anodized, a Scorpion Basket bolts right up to the stock Harley-Davidson ring gear/primary sprocket. Installation couldn’t be easier. Barnett even includes all the hardware needed for the job, along with complete and easy-tofollow instructions.
