Additionally, Scott Fentzke from Performance Fabrication in West Falls, NY showed what can be done with a 2016 Street Glide. If his name sounds familiar, he and his wife Pam earned the Dealer of the Year Award at the 2014 Drag Specialties Chattahoochee River Run. We have coverage of Daytona Bike Week in this issue, the long-running annual kickoff event of the motorcycle riding season. Photographers Joe Kress and Horst Rösler were all over Central Florida in March, capturing the bike shows, the rides and the crowds, plus some of the wacky things you would expect in a Bike Week report.

W

e are always on the lookout for interesting stories to share about project bikes, new products, industry news, events and more. In this issue, we have all that. But sadly, we must also include a tribute for one of the greats of our time in the motorcycle industry. On March 22nd, we lost Arlen Ness, 79, the man known as the King of Custom. I can’t say I knew Arlen really well, but I did know him for a long time and always admired his work and his following in the industry. His place in the custom world was second to none. For the tribute, we gave some who were very close to him a chance to share their touching remarks and memories. As stated above, we have some features in this issue that you should check out. In addition to our cover story about Metzeler Tires, we have two motorcycle project bikes. Hogtunes, makers of Wild Boar Audio, shared with us the many upgrades they had made to a Harley Ultra to serve as a rolling audio showroom on wheels.

The Drag Specialties Dealer Training Tour is fully underway. Check out their ad on page 7 and you will see that the tour began in March and will run into October. There will be twenty-four events, broken into three group of vendors. I had a chance to attend one of the events in my area recently and was really impressed by the turnout (See report on page 18). Drag reps Jason Rayburn and Ted Stollman got great support from their Southern California dealers who, after working at their stores all day, spent an evening with them hearing about four brands of products they stock and sell. That takes a lot of commitment and passion for motorcycling. Lastly, congratulations to my old friend, and a great customer, Darryl Bassani on 50 successful years in business! Our relationship actually dates back to those early years when he was just getting started. I was racing motorcycles for a living at the time, but racing is seasonal and I had started a little distributing business to carry me through the winter months. I heard about the line of Bassani expansion chambers for two-strokes and made a deal with Darryl to sell them to the dealers in the San Diego area. That business lasted a couple of years until I retired from racing, but he and I have been friends ever since. It’s been great to watch his business grow into what it is now. Best wishes for a great Spring season!

Ride Safe!

rag Specialties, Parts Unlimited and Parts Canada are teaming together this August to present the first North American NVP in Madison, WI.

This is the first Expo that will unite the three companies to introduce the fall buying season. With this collaboration, exhibitors will have the best of all teams in one location to roll out new products and programs, and to educate both dealers and sales reps. “Parts Canada, its staff and I are very proud to be a part of the LeMans global family. In this, our 20th year in business, we are very excited to celebrate our anniversary with our corporate family in Madison, Wisconsin at the 2019 North American NVP,” says James Danyluk, president of Parts Canada. “Twenty years ago, Fred Fox started Parts Canada and has never looked back. We look forward to being a part of the largest powersports distributor expo, and to seeing dealers and suppliers from across the continent.” The North American NVP runs two full days featuring opportunities to connect with the industry’s leading brands on the expo floor, through dealer training sessions, and socially at the Meet & Greet/Bike Show. “I’m very excited to have our Canadian team join us for our first North American NVP. It’s another step forward in our quest to service all our dealers the very best we can,” says Mike Collins, CEO of LeMans Corporation. “What an opportunity to share ideas and experience and to learn from one another.” Save the date and talk with your Drag Specialties rep for details on attending the show in August. ■

Reigning AFT Champion Mees Wins at Texas Half-Mile

D

rag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider and reigning AFT Twins champion Jared Mees racked up his first win of the 2019 American Flat Track season after a one-on-one duel with fellow Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider and teammate Brian Bauman at the Al Lamb’s Dallas Honda Texas Half-Mile. It was a classic performance at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth for Mees, who has earned a remarkable 20 total victories in his back-to-back title runs in 2017 and 2018. He’d come into the third round of the season hungry for a victory, and Bauman – the current Twins point leader – gave him a run for his money. The two immediately broke free from the pack and traded the lead back and forth multiple times with a series of slick overtakes in which they squared one another up exiting Turn 4. Mees finally broke Bauman’s challenge on lap 22 of 25. At that point, he eked out just enough of a gap to breathe a bit easier over the race’s final circulations, claiming the checkered flag with a 1.316-second margin of victory.

Badlands Illuminator™ (RUNBRAKE-TURN with LEQ™) modules are the ONLY modules the industry that offer run, brake and turn signal functions with a built-in Load Equalizer! That’s an all-in-one module, plug-n-play and a LIFETIME WARRANTY! So save your money & some space under your seat using the “originals” since 1990.

The win marks Mees’ 27th HalfMile triumph, breaking a tie for second all-time with the legendary Will Davis. When asked if he expects Saturday’s win to reopen the floodgates, a measured Mees said, “That would be the goal -- that is the goal -- and we’d love to do that, but this year is tougher. The guys are better, and they’ve got their machines figured out better. I’ve got to dig down deeper. “Last year, I basically got a good start, went by Briar when he was on the Kawasaki, and took off. This time, I had to wear the boy out. He rode so good. He was better than me in Turns 3 and 4 early in the race. I saw what he was doing and moved down to his line, and that allowed me to maintain a little bit of a gap.” ■

P

arts Unlimited/Drag Specialties/KTM rider Shayna Texter ripped into the Texas Half-Mile with an aggressive performance that earned her the victory at the AFT Singles third round and reminded the world that she’s the rider with the most wins in her class. Texter started off the day on a positive note, qualifying second overall amidst a stacked field. In Heat #2, Texter powered her KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition to a secondplace start, where she battled hard and ultimately made her move into the lead to capture the heat race win. She kept the momentum flowing as she led all eight laps of the Semi to put herself on pole position heading into the evening’s Main Event.

“The bike handled awesome and we had really good grip all day,” Texter said. “It was awesome to get Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s first win and hats off to all of our partners, I’m super happy to be able to get it done here in Texas and I’m looking forward to the rest of the year – it moved us up to sixth in the championship standings so we’ll just keep working and plugging away.” ■

Texter got off to a sixth-place start in the Main Event and quickly worked her way up to the lead by lap six. From there, she maintained a steady pace out front to lead her competition for a total of nine laps to capture a massive win in Texas. After three rounds, Texter now sits sixth overall in the AFT Singles Championship standings. Photo by Scott Hunter/American Flat Track

Survey: High Number of Youth Plan to Start Riding

T

he Progressive International Motorcycle Shows announced data gathered from survey feedback provided by participants of IMS’ Discover the Ride initiative. It found that 81 percent of currently non-motorcyclelicensed consumers who experienced the thrill of two-wheels on the program’s New Rider Course plan to get their motorcycle license.

cables,

trusted name OE Quality, High-Performance Black Vinyl or Stainless-Steel Braided cables — including extended lengths.

Of those non-licensed riders, 64 percent were under the age of 35. The combined findings suggest there is a high percent of youth interested in joining the motorcycle industry. “It is important for the motorcycle industry to recognize there is a deep pool of potential riders, especially within the younger generation, as Discover the Ride’s data suggests,” said Tracy Harris, senior vice president, powersports, Informa. “Discover the Ride does a fantastic job providing a quick and accessible opportunity for non-riders to experience the rush of two wheels.” Launched during the 2018/2019 IMS tour, Discover the Ride is an approachable motorcycling experience designed to give non-motorcycle-licensed consumers the experience of riding in a safe and controlled environment. The interactive program includes the New Rider Course, The Kids Zone, educational seminars within New To 2, and a dyno and wheelie experience. “The motorcycle industry has struggled with Millennials and Gen Xers not entering the market at the same rate as baby boomers are aging out,” said Robert Pandya, team manager, Discover the Ride. “It is critical for the future of motorcycling that current industry leaders come together to bring approachable opportunities for the next generation, as well as underserved demographics, to experience and get on board with riding. As the nation’s largest consumer motorcycle tour, IMS is currently leading that effort with Discover the Ride.” Additional key highlights from the Discover the Ride survey includes: • Across the seven IMS tour stops throughout the nation and the DFW Auto Show, more than 6,800 consumers participated in Discover the Ride. • 47 percent of all non-motorcycle-licensed Discover the Ride and New Rider Course participants were female. ■

ARLEN NESS TRIBUTE

RIP: ARLEN NESS

The 2003 grand opening of Arlen Ness Motorcycles in Dublin, CA. Don Emde photo

JULY 12, 1939 – MARCH 22, 2019

O

n March 22 the custom motorcycle world lost its King when Arlen Ness died at the age of 79. While Arlen may be gone, his legacy will live on in the stunning customs he created, his impact on the world of custom bikes, and in the hearts and minds of his family and friends. We spoke with a number of Arlen’s friends and associates to see if they could share a few words or their favorite memories about the man known as the King of Custom.

LeMans Corporation chairman Fred Fox and Arlen Ness. Don Emde photo

DONNIE SMITH DONNIE SMITH CUSTOM CYCLES AND FELLOW HAMSTER If Arlen had an idea, he would build it and ride it. If anyone is a builder now, they’d have to look back and see everything Arlen had done before thinking they are doing something new. If you can think it, Arlen’s probably already done it.

Don Emde photo

There is a deep hollow in the industry now. I can’t believe he is gone. He was always approachable and was a very humble man. Arlen never made anything feel like a competition between the us builders back in the day. He was excited to show his new stuff, and equally excited to see what we had done. I am more than honored to be able to call him my good friend. The void he left will remain with me for a very long time.

TOM MOTZKO DRAG SPECIALTIES VENDOR RELATIONS AND FELLOW HAMSTER He touched so many folks worldwide that it’s difficult to have a clear picture. Certainly we all experienced the soft, humble personality of Arlen; always available to take a picture, or sign an autograph, or provide a guiding light to a motorcycle build.

Don Emde photo

Honestly, Arlen was instrumental in creating the custom aftermarket motorcycle industry as we know it today, all without consciously trying. He was simply doing what he loved and it took on a life of its own, which, of course ultimately became Arlen Ness Enterprises.

16

When he looked at a motorcycle, he did not see what the rest of us did. He saw something a lot different, which always ended up as a very unique build. Every one of Arlen’s creations was different. From a double engine/double blower/double rear belt drive bike to an ape hanger chopper or a razor-thin early Sportster that looked like it weighed 105 pounds! Arlen never got in a rut over all those years creating. You simply never knew what his next move was going to be. Thank you to Arlen and the Ness family for every bit of your inspiration, advice and creativity! You helped all of us have more fun with our motorcycles.

CUSTOM BUILDER AND OWNER/FOUNDER ROLAND SANDS DESIGN

Arlen Ness and I have had many special memories over the 38 years we knew each other, but one memory will always stay with me forever. In 1983 I was standing in a hotel parking lot while attending an Easy Riders event in Hanford, CA, looking at this awesome custom one-off motorcycle , and the guy standing next to it called me over. He said, “Would you like to sit on it?” And, I said, “Hell yeah and I did.” That was the man, Arlen Ness and his Blower Bike. Always a gentleman willing to talk to anybody about motorcycles. Arlen is the man that moved me into custom motorcycles, working in the aftermarket motorcycle business and [we had] a long, very special friendship. He was one of the finest individuals one will ever meet.”

Arlen was always someone I looked up to. He was obviously a very talented builder and designer, as well as a businessman. But, what really impressed me was how he treated everyone so well and equal. How he treated me didn’t change much from when I was a kid to when we built against each other. When I did my first Biker Build-Off, Arlen was the guy I wanted to go against as I had more respect for him than any other builder. And really, for me even a loss was a win (which I did lose) because I was going against the godfather. We had such a fun trip to Puerto Rico. Both our families riding together in the tropics on crazy custom bikes. It was epic, something I’ll always remember and cherish. There will never be another Arlen.

I am grateful for the relationship we were able to develop with Arlen and Cory Ness. Arlen was one of the most creative and talented people I ever had the chance to work with and yet, perhaps the kindest, most humble people I have ever known. One of my greatest memories was the day we flew to Spirit Lake, IA for the production of the first Arlen Ness Signature Series Victory Vegas. Having a major manufacturer build a bike with his name on it had been a dream of Arlen’s that he shared with me during our first meeting. I told he and Cory, “Let’s make that happen!” ■

he Drag Specialties Exclusive Dealer Training Tour offers the company’s dealers the opportunity to get some serious, in-depth product training outside the familiar confines of their respective stores.

Before the presentations, the dealers were invited into the Drag Specialties big rig to check out a number of motorcycles equipped with the very products they would be hearing about, including that 2019 FatBook cover bike.

The tour stops are a chance for those dealers and their employees to get one-on-one production education in a relaxed environment, all while meeting up with other Drag dealers and their Drag sales reps.

The event kicked off with food and refreshments, giving those in attendance a chance to network and meet up with old industry friends before the official business started.

In early April, Drag dealers from across Southern California gathered at the Escape Craft Brewery in Redlands, California, for a night of focused training with product specialists from Michelin Tires, S&S Cycle, Rekluse Clutches and Yuasa Batteries.

New to the FatBook, Rekluse Clutches brought along Patrick Koether and Danny Youngwerth to give the group details about the company’s unique auto-clutches. The dealers also learned about Yuasa Batteries product range from the company’s Scott Ulrich.

The Redlands stop was just one of 24 cities that the tour visited. The tour is part of Drag Specialties’ effort to bring product training and show discounts directly to dealers and their staff. Dealers come away from the local shows with increased product knowledge, and some extra insight on selling those products. ■

TIRES

CO V E R

The Cruisetec’s profile is derived from Metzeler’s sport-touring tires, and it features a muscular carcass ideal for big V-twins.

T

ouring bikes aren’t made the way they used to be, so their tires shouldn’t be old-fashioned, either. Thanks to updated designs, better technological enhancements and a stronger focus on performance, touring bikes and cruisers are more capable than ever before. That means tires have to be able to keep up with a bike’s potential, which is why Metzeler has introduced the high-performance Cruisetec V-twin tire. Metzeler gets right to the point with the Cruisetec’s tagline of “Performance Perfected.” Whether it’s on a cruiser, a Bagger or a custom bike, the Cruisetec is designed to enhance the handling, grip, corner stability and line carving capabilities for riders who want to do more than the standard “Point A to Point B” trips. The Cruisetec’s profile is derived from Metzeler’s sport-touring tires, though the shape is paired with a muscular carcass ideal for V-twins. That sport-derived shape has a higher curvature than typical V-twin tires, which increases handling characteristics and offers incredible stability in both straightline riding and side-to-side transitions, even with a passenger. The front and rear profiles ensure even wear, too. The sturdy tread pattern and dual compound on the rear Cruisetec tires make sure that longevity isn’t sacrificed for performance. Cruisetec tires are designed to match or slightly exceed the mileage of OE V-twin tires. The brush-like tread pattern of Cruisetec tires enhances mechanical grip to keep a motorcycle firmly in contact with the road. The profile, a new compound recipe and innovative structural elements combine to maximize the contact patch for even more grip while cornering. The contact patch is

also engineered to work well with all types of motorcycles, including models with ABS and traction control. The front tread pattern features alternating diverging grooves that cross the center section. The primary effects of this design are excellent water evacuation and improved braking efficiency. This design also makes the Cruisetec an ideal tire for bikes equipped with electronic braking aids. The tires’ structural characteristics also mitigate the chattering that can result from ABS activation, providing an additional reason to pair a technologically-enhanced bike with a performance tire. Another benefit of the diverging grooves is that the full/void ratio is increased when the bike is in a lean, so more rubber comes in contact with the asphalt for even more grip. The rear Cruisetec tire, meanwhile, has long alternated grooves that converge in the rotation direction. Their main function is to distribute under-footprint pressure evenly to maintain regular wear across the surface. The rear tread pattern also enhances solidity, grip and directionality when in a lean. Cruisetec dual compound rear tires are high in silica, which promotes fast warm-up and chemical grip, even in less-thanideal riding conditions. The center compound is comparable to the average compound used in the V-twin segment, but it is combined with an innovative plasticizer to give good grip, strength and stability on the straights. The softer shoulder compounds on the rear tires enhance confidence and performance. Similar to the compound used on the front tires, the plasticizers and silica content in the compound help with prompt directionality and high

grip levels, both necessary for confident corner entry and line holding. The center and shoulder compounds combine to give a rider immediate response in all conditions, whether it’s wet or dry. The front Cruisetec tire has a single compound design, and the percentage of silica aids fast warm-up and provides outstanding chemical grip in the wet. Inside the Cruisetec, stiffer cords allow more room for thicker rubber, which offers enhanced damping properties. The result is a reduction in the “floating feeling” riders get when exiting turns under hard acceleration. The internal structure also nearly eliminates groove wander when riding on grooved or other types of rough, uneven surfaces. Currently, the Cruisetec is available in 11 front sizes and 15 rear sizes. Check with your Drag Specialties rep about the latest availability.

ME 888: GOING THE DISTANCE While Metzeler’s Cruisetec tires are designed to match the high-performance capabilities of touring bikes, some riders still value road trips over the ability to push the limits of performance. The Metzeler ME 888 Marathon Ultra tires are for those riders who are more interested in a touring bike’s primary function – long-distance rides. The ME 888 offers a blend of ultra-mileage capabilities and performance features, especially in wet conditions, making it an ideal choice for long trips on touring bikes, cruisers or other bikes put into cross-country service. To create the ME 888, Metzeler designers carefully crafted the profile, structure, tread pattern and compound. The flat, wide geometry of the tire structure carries the stress generated under the footprint out and toward the sidewalls, which reduces the fatigue and wear on the tire.

The tread pattern has transversal grooves intersected by compound bridges. The design creates a more solid, stiffer tread design that increases wear regularity and reduces the stress transmitted to the belts and carcass plies. The tread pattern is also designed to ensure a high level of water evacuation. Additionally, ME 888 groove walls have varying inclinations to ensure the best operating angle in every position. The compound of the ME 888 is specially formulated to be abrasion resistant, providing higher resistance to wear. The amount of silica in the compound ensures chemical grip on wet surfaces. The compound and tread combine to make the ME 888 an outstanding tire in the wet, with superb grip and water-siphoning characteristics. The ME 888 is available in an impressive range of sizes, including 31 front and 38 rear size options. Whether it’s high-performance or ultra-long-distance tires, cruiser or sportbike applications or one of the many options in between, Metzeler is exclusively dedicated to motorcycle tires. Metzeler has been producing tires for two-wheeled vehicles since 1892. In the more than 100 years since, Metzeler has been a major presence in all of the motorcycle segments. Back in 1863, the German company was founded by Robert Friedrich Metzeler as a rubber and elasticized goods company, which means Metzeler has a history spanning more than 150 years. Metzeler became a staple of the V-twin segment in 1999, when it introduced the ME 800 V-twin tire, from which the ME 888 is derived. In 2019, Metzeler continues to break new ground in that segment with the introduction of the Cruisetec line. ■

Bassani Xhaust at 50

Celebrating a Half Century of Performance Before he launched his successful company, Darryl Bassani got his start building 2-stroke exhausts in his parents' garage.

B

efore he decided to go business legit, Darryl Bassani had already been building successful performance pipes in his parent’s garage, starting with that first expansion chamber model exhaust he built for his own Hodaka motocross bike. Then he took the plunge. “It was in August, 1969 when I got a business license and jumped into this motorcycle exhaust game for real,” says Darryl. Now, five decades later, a career that has spanned the evolution of the motorcycle business, Bassani Xhaust is celebrating its 50th anniversary, is still going strong, and the irrepressible Darryl Bassani is still at the helm. The launch of Bassani Xhaust was not without its struggles. But after numerous tries, and lots of self-taught R&D, he had a pipe that was winning on the motocross tracks of the day, a pipe quickly in demand by racers and motorcycle dealers alike. In fact, it wasn’t much it wasn’t long before the list of riders using his pipes read like a “Who’s Who” of professional motocross. Bob Hannah, who would go on to become one of the most successful motocross racers in AMA history, even worked in the shop. “We built performance exhausts that delivered as promised,” Darryl explains, “selling them at a price that was right.” Which pretty much describes the Bassani Xhaust of today, 50 years later.

By the early 1970s Bassani Xhaust had expanded its lineup to include 4-stroke bikes, 4-into-1 systems for the Hondas, Kawasakis, Suzukis and Yamahas of the day. Those Superbike Competition Exhausts were just as successful as the motocross 2-stroke pipes had been – Reg Pridmore won the 1978 Superbike Championship with a Bassani exhaust. It wasn’t only Japanese 4-strokes getting the attention. Harley-Davidson XR-750 flat trackers with riders such as Grand National Champion Mert Lawwill were running Bassanis. The first rider to average over 100 mph on a dirt oval did it with Bassani pipes. However, it wasn’t until 1991 that Bassani began making exhausts for streetmodel Harleys. “At first they weren’t even sold under our name,” Darryl explains. The big-look 2¼-inch Porker Pipes, albeit built by Bassani, were branded and marketed by White Bros. Next up, though, came 4-inch diameter slip-ons for Baggers, this time they featured the Bassani name as well as the company’s unique spiral-louvered core, a performancedesign baffle with a unique sound – something that continues on to this day. Shortly after that, the Pro Streets were added, 2-into-2 systems with short, stepped head pipes. By the early 2000s, Bassani’s oh-so-familiar Road Rage 2-into-1 made

BASSANI XHAUST Bassani actively engages in social media to keep a close eye on trends, and uses it to publicize events at its headquarters in Anaheim, CA.

In his 50 years in business, Darryl Bassani has built exhausts for everything from 2-stroke dirtbikes and Jeeps to V-twins and metrics.

its appearance, a pipe that’s become the most popular exhaust Bassani produces. “Riders tell us those 2-into-1s, especially the all stainless Road Rage III models, are the pipes the ‘cool guys’ run,” says longtime Bassani employee Gary Naito. Chalk that up to Bassani’s active engagement in social media and Bassani teamed up with professional skateboarder Greg Lutzka to produce a signature series limited edition 2-into-1 exhaust.

participation in shows, events and bike nights large and small. “All that keeps us in touch and lets us see what’s going on and what’s going to be in demand. And, then we respond,” Gary says. Some of the stunt- and action-sport riders Bassani works with have become Instagram celebrities, market influencers with up to 500,000 online followers. “With our reputation for performance most anything new we come up with is immediately accepted,” Gary notes. “Riders know it’s not only good-looking and good sounding, it’s something they’ve asked for.” All this input has allowed Bassani to dramatically expand its lineup of offerings. Along with everything now available for the Harleys, Bassani has metric exhausts, and some pretty cool stuff for side-by-sides. “Basically,” Gary explains, “wherever we see a need we try to fill it.” That obviously includes the growing line of Indian motorcycles, and there are some interesting bikes coming down that line. “We can’t wait to start working with the FTR 1200,” he says. “We’re already being asked when we’ll have pipes ready.” All of this is available exclusively through Drag Specialties/ Parts Unlimited and it’s been that way since 2007. “Teaming up with Drag and Parts like this has been nothing but successful,” Darryl says. “Between the connection with all the reps, and with magazines like this getting the word out, whenever we come up with something new it’s almost instantly in the marketplace. That’s huge, it’s why we’re so loyal to Drag Specialties. You can’t get one of our exhaust systems anywhere unless it’s coming from a Drag Specialties dealer.” ■

Golden Anniversary Performers Special Edition Pipes for Milwaukee-Eight Softails

assani’s Road Rage III hardly needs an introduction. Stainless-steel 2-into-1s, these handcrafted and Tig-welded pipes with their short and stubby style, upswept megaphone, unmistakable sound and a power building stepped-header design have become a big seller in the Bassani line. Now, to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary, Bassani has released the Special Edition 2-into1, a custom-badged and newly designed version of that popular Road Rage model. The Special Edition 2-into-1 is available for four Milwaukee-Eight powered Softail models; the Fat Bob, the Lowrider, the Slim and the Street Bob.

To celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary, Bassani has released the Special Edition 2-into1, featuring a custom 50th anniversary logo Tig welded in place on that stylish megaphone muffler.

Short, abbreviated heat shields mounted high up on the head pipes complete a look that’s clean, pure, simple and all business. Finally, the exhaust’s upswept style means your customers will enjoy plenty of ground clearance.

Bassani may have specially designed this pipe to honor 50 years in business – five decades of building exhaust built for power – but all that good stuff that propelled the Road Rage to popularity is included. Starting out with 1¾-inch diameter head pipes, those pipes step up to 1 7/8 inches precisely where they should to enhance the speed and volume of the exhaust flow. Those stepped- and equal-length headers then join together with a Bassani-designed collector further enhancing the flow. The whole system ends with a short megaphone muffler with a removable baffle and a reverse-cone tip that’s also removable. A 50th anniversary logo is Tig welded in place on that megaphone which emits that trademark Bassani rumble.

There’s more than just looks, ground clearance, a distinct sound, and that signature Bassani 50th anniversary badge here. Those 2-into-1 systems are well known for their scavenging effect, and for their ability to maximize flow for increased horsepower and torque. Increases in low- and mid-range torque are coupled with a free-flowing top-end and improved horsepower. Naturally, 18mm O2 bungs are provided to accommodate custom tuning with aftermarket wide-band sensors, and there are 12mm adapters supplied for the factory-sized OE sensors. Let your customers know that with the 50th anniversary 2-into-1, they’re not only getting a quick, good-looking bolt-on performance boost, they’re also getting a little Bassani history for their bikes. ■

There’s a lot to be learned from the latest addition to the Drag Specialties Show Truck/Dealer Training stable. Beyond demonstrating the custom-power of FatBook bolt-ons, the new Wild Boar Audio system is on full display.

While the Whole Hog audio system is the star of the show there’s plenty more to see. Headlight and passing lamps are Custom Dynamics.

hen the time came to get to building a new custom bike for the Drag Specialties Show Truck, Hogtunes/Wild Boar Audio founder Mike “Pez” Pesdirz knew exactly what direction he wanted to go. “I figured it was high-time to include an Ultra in that lineup of FatBook customs,” says Pez.

FATBOOK BUILD

Working with the crew at Brian Olsen Racing Services in Georgetown, Ontario, Canada, and with plenty of help from a stellar lineup of Drag Specialties vendors, he came up with one eye-popping FLHTK, too.

Ever the savvy businessman, Pez’s plans for this big Touring model HarleyDavidson stretched far beyond turning out customized two-wheeled eye candy. You see, starting with that choice of models, this bike would be a rolling, house-rocking showcase for the latest Wild Boar Audio system, the 900-watt, three-amplifier, six-speaker Whole Hog Kit. It’s a kit that Pez and Wild Boar Audio put together just for those Ultra Limited model Harley-Davidson motorcycles and Trikes, all the machines with liquid-cooling and radiators in their lower fairings. The finished product turned out to be an audio showroom on two wheels. It beautifully showcases that Whole Hog system by allowing dealers attending the Drag Specialties Dealer Training Tour the chance to experience the system live and in person. Furthermore, a Hogtunes/Wild Boar Audio product specialist will be on hand to give all the details on its operation and installation. While the audio system is the star of the show, there’s a whole lot more going on with this custom Ultra. A true FatBook bolt-on makeover, there’s plenty to take in. “I wanted this one to focus on what the everyday, average

guy could do with his bike,” Pez explains. “We didn’t want it so over-the-top, it would seem unapproachable.” Just like those other FatBook customs that came before, it’s a clean, accessible build that will have riders saying, “I could build that.” And, with that FatBook close at hand, they certainly could. Everything on this Ultra is an easy bolt-on to an otherwise-stock Harley-Davidson. Even the paint is factory original. The most obvious additions, of course, are those Coastal Moto wheels and their Metzeler tires, a ready-to-go package straight from the FatBook. “I wasn’t 100 percent sure about putting a 21-inch front wheel on an Ultra,” Pez admits. “I can’t remember seeing any that looked right to me.” An unfounded worry. That wheel-and-tire swap is just plain cool looking. It makes the bike. Additions like the Trask Performance *Assault Charge air cleaner, the LA Choppers 12-inch handlebars, Dakota Digital instrumentation, the full complement of Custom Dynamics lighting and the seat, levers, polished stainless

steel brake rotors and chrome engine-bolt kit from Drag Specialties complete the smooth-looking package. It’s a smooth riding one, too, with its Legend Suspensions REVO-A shocks. Then there’s that Whole Hog audio system, with its 900 Watts of power, three amplifiers that easily fit inside the fairing and six speakers. It’s a plug-and-play bolt-on, too, just like everything else on this bike, and like every other kit from Hogtunes and Wild Boar Audio. All required hardware is supplied to fit each set of speakers where they belong – two up front, two in back and two in those lower fairings. Best of all, the cleverly designed Hogtunes adapters for those lower-fairing speakers make access to the radiator’s coolant tank easier than with the stock setup. Ease of routine maintenance isn’t all the Whole Hog package offers, either. Its 900 Watts of power, three amps and six speakers are easy on the factory-standard charging system. “As a motorcycle audio company, that’s something

So easy on it, Pez says, there’s still plenty of headroom left to add LED lighting, heated grips and riding gear and other electrical accessories. Luxury Ride, Luxury Sound Audio Upgrade for the CVO Ultra

Customers looking to improve the audio systems in their 2014-2019 Harley-Davidson CVO FLH Ultras should take a look at Wild Boar Audio’s Ultra Kit SE, a premium upgrade for those premium CVO bikes.

C

ustomers kept asking for it, so Wild Boar Audio listened. The company now has its Ultra kit available for 2014-2019 CVO FLH Ultras. The Wild Boar Ultra Kit SE (p/n 4405-0545) is an upgraded aftermarket audio system for the premium CVO bikes. Because CVOs come with an audio system that is already a step above the typical OEM system, Wild Boar Audio and parent company Hogtunes had not intended to make a kit for that range. But, as owner/president Mike “Pez” Pesdirz says, so many requests were flooding in that he realized dealers needed a solution for this CVO application. Each Wild Boar Ultra Kit SE contains a 600-Watt fourchannel amp with REMIT proprietary circuitry, 200-Watt front speakers designed to blend seamlessly into the front fairing, 150-Watt rear speakers that drop into the factory rear speaker pods, wiring, hardware, mounting plates and a CVO-specific adaptor plug that makes the installation a snap. Everything required for the installation is in the kit. The amp, which is rated at 150 Watts x 4 at 4 Ohms, comes with Wild Boar’s REMIT technology, the proprietary design of the circuitry within the Class D amp that offers superb FM reception. The amp bolts over the radio inside the fairing in the same spot as the factory amp.

34

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

JUNE 2019

The kit works with the stock radio as well as the stock charging system. Like all Wild Boar Audio products, there is no need to make a costly upgrade to a new charging system. The Wild Boar Ultra Kit SE is completely plugand-play, and the kit’s simplicity helps save dealers the headache of a complicated installation. In addition to installation being simple, it is also easy to expand the SE kit, either with speakers in the lower fairings or saddlebag lids. Another benefit of the kit is that the entire system is carefully designed by audio engineers to ensure louder sound, better clarity at speed and improved bass response compared to a stock system. The Wild Boar Ultra Kit SE is designed to enhance the overall experience of riding a luxury Harley like the CVO Ultra. Like the other kits from Wild Boar Audio, each Ultra Kit SE comes with a five-year warranty on speakers and a three-year warranty on the amplifier. The other Wild Boar Ultra kits include applications for FLH-style Ultras (p/n 4405-0499) and Road Glide Ultras (p/n 4405-0500). ■

BIKE WEEK 2019 THE 78 TH ANNUAL RUN TO THE SUN Story by Joe Kress Photos by Joe Kress and Horst Rösler as indicated

ll the differently colored license plates hinted at what was to come. Along with the usual suspects from the Southeast in Daytona Beach for Bike Week 2019, the riders from Georgia, Alabama, and the Carolinas mixed in with all of them. Also arriving in significant numbers were bikes and riders from as far away as Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and even further afield. For 2019, it seemed, the promise of a run to the sun for 10 days was just too much to ignore.

By all accounts the place was going to be packed and all those riders, whether coming from near or far, found plenty to do at their getaway into the (mostly) sunshine. For some, it was the lure of Daytona racing that had drawn them south. After all, the heated competition between Harley-Davidson and Indian is what started this annual trek way back in 1937. With the Daytona TT back on the Bike Week schedule it’s returned in all its factory-wars glory and this year, once

An interesting contrast to all this, however, was the apparent interest in all things two-wheel vintage this year. CHEMICALS & LUBRICANTS

Smooth Moves V-Twin Oil Choices

Bel-Ray has developed three oil options specifically to meet the demands of an air-cooled HarleyDavidson engine. They include Mineral, Semi-Synthetic and Full Synthetic.

A

s far as Bel-Ray is concerned, V-twin engines deserve a dedicated V-twin oil. As such, the company has three different V-twin oils, including Mineral, Semi-Synthetic and Full Synthetic.

Bel-Ray develops oils and lubricants for all facets of the powersports industry, but these three oil options were designed specifically to meet the demands of an air-cooled Harley-Davidson engine. All of them feature exclusive BelRay anti-wear chemistry, which reduces bearing and valve train wear, and keeps pistons and rings from scuffing. The V-twin Synthetic oil is Bel-Ray’s premium option, providing top-of-the-line performance. It is a 10W-50 multi-grade synthetic oil, and the 100 percent synthetic base oils are combined with high-performance additives to create an all-around outstanding oil. Cold starts are safe and easy, and superior film strength provides increased component protection. The oil also has Bel-Ray’s highest viscosity index for improved viscosity protection, even at high temperatures. Added to that is exceptional shear stability, which further reduces viscosity loss. The oil also reduces friction in the engine, which helps decrease operating temperatures to provide an engine that will perform better and last longer. The V-twin Semi-Synthetic oil comes in at a lower price point, but it still has a long list of premium attributes. The 20W-50 Semi-Synthetic option is a multi-grade V-twin oil that combines the benefits of fully-synthetic oils with the lower cost of petroleum oils.

46

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

JUNE 2019

The high film strength of the oil improves component protection, and the formula provides a stable viscosity across a wide range of temperatures to ensure consistent performance. The V-twin Semi-Synthetic oil removes deposits, dissipates heat and lowers friction to reduce engine operating temperatures. Improved oxidation resistance helps an engine stay clean and functioning properly. The value-priced option from Bel-Ray is the V-twin Mineral 20W-50 oil. This multi-grade motorcycle oil has been formulated for V-twin engines, and it lowers operating temperatures while also minimizing deposit formation for a cleaner, cooler-running engine. It is formulated with a high viscosity index, and the formula helps reduce evaporation loss. Low-volatility petroleum-based oils make the price tag attractive for customers, but the oil is still an upgrade because it exceeds OEM specifications. The V-twin Mineral oil can be used for the engine, primary and transmission, making it a versatile choice. Bel-Ray manufactures all of its products in the USA, and Drag Specialties carries a wide range of the company’s products, with oil being the most prominent. In addition to 1- and 4-liter bottles for customer sales, there are also 55-gallon drums of shop oil available. Other Bel-Ray products include items like chain lube, brake fluid, fork oil, foam filter oil, coolant and a foam filter cleaner and degreaser. ■

LED LIGHTING

Bright Baggers

New Slim-Profile LED Solutions Custom Dynamics debuted its first ProBEAM product in 2018, and the line has been growing since then. The rear LED wraparound fender tip for touring models is the latest in the ProBEAM lineup, and like its predecessors, it boasts a slim profile and a big light output. The LED wrap-around fender tip replaces the OEM tip, adding a boost of illumination with three LED light pipes and 12 LEDs. The light pipes provide a constant running light, while the LEDs create a full-contrast brake light. The complete sealed unit installs easily and comes with a connector for true plug-and-play installation. Customization choices include a chrome or gloss black finish and a red or smoked lens.

Custom Dynamics’ ProBEAM LED wraparound fender tip provides plenty of extra visibility out on the road. It functions as a running light and brake light.

ustom Dynamics is constantly debuting new lighting components for motorcycles, and the two latest products from the company are designed to light up the rear end of a range of Harley-Davidson Touring models. The ProBEAM® rear LED wrap-around fender tip and the Low Profile BAGZ saddlebag lights are two lighting options that give a touring bike an aesthetics upgrade as well as a boost of visibility. The Low Profile BAGZ saddlebag lights are designed as additional run and brake lights for 1997-current Touring models. While the lights have a sleek, low-profile design, the lighting is anything but low key. Super bright red LEDs behind a red or smoked lens provide a red running light as well as a full-intensity red brake light.

The ProBEAM rear LED wrap-around fender tip fits the following Touring models: • 2009-2019 Electra Glide, Ultra Classic, Ultra Classic Low, Ultra Limited and Ultra Limited Low • 2016-2019 Road Glide Ultra • 2010-2019 Road King Police models Both of the new products include a lifetime LED warranty from Custom Dynamics. ■

TIRES

The Battlecruise H50

Tires Built for American V-Twins For the fronts, there’s a large and uniformly shaped contact patch for high cornering power and an easy and precise feel. And, by striking a controlled balance between overall carcass rigidity and shock-absorption flexibility, the Battlecruise H50 tires are able to deliver a smooth, comfortable ride. A tire’s appearance is important to a V-twin rider as well, and the Battlecruise H50 has that desired aggressive look. But more than just looks, the Battlecruise H50 tread designs incorporate everything Bridgestone has learned over its many years of successful racing to optimize performance in both wet and dry conditions. The tread patterns have been proven under actual road conditions, across thousands of miles of testing. The bottom line is that they look good and perform even better. Y

our American V-twin customers demand a lot from their bikes. Choices like chrome, horsepower and style are upgrades that riders make immediately. But what about the tires? Those tires should be the ideal complement to any other upgrade on that motorcycle.

at www.bridgestonemotorcycletires.com.

The tires should provide a smooth, comfortable ride that delivers confidence in all types of conditions. Tires should also have the longevity to last through mile after mile of worry-free use. V-twin riders don’t have to compromise in the demand for any of this, because Bridgestone has built the Battlecruise H50 to meet every one of those demands. First, the Bridgestone Battlecruise H50 was developed to deliver a strong, confidence-inspiring grip on both wet and dry surfaces. It was also engineered to have a light and precise feel, with strong cornering ability. In regards to the ride, the H50 was designed to be incredibly smooth, quiet, and comfortable. These aspects would be enough by themselves, but the H50 also provides the rider with a tire that has great wear life. Every aspect of the Battlecruise H50 including its design, materials and the overall construction has been optimized for an American V-twin. The rear tire, for instance, has a larger crown profile for better adhesion on road surfaces along with a compound specifically developed for extended-mileage and even wear.

Brake Products for V-Twins

L

ong a purveyor of quality motorcycle components, EBC Brakes manufactures products for a range of American-made V-twin motorcycles. They include those from Harley-Davidson, and older models from Buell and Victory. Drag Specialties Magazine checked in with James Hallett, CEO of EBC Brakes, to learn more about some of the products available through Drag Specialties.

“EBC Brakes operates from four manufacturing plants in the UK and U.S. to produce more than 10 million components each year,” Hallett explained from his office at EBC’s worldwide headquarters in Northampton, UK. “This year that componentry includes a number of offerings for American-built motorcycles.”

BRAKE ROTORS Among the first products Hallett highlights are the range of custom stainless-steel rotors. These fully floating brake rotors feature stainless steel componentry, with a heat-treated and tempered outer rotor ring featuring a diamond ground finish and a center hub offering a choice of clean black or chrome luster finish. “A stand-out feature on our floating rotors is EBC’s patented SD or ‘square drive’ button system, which allows the rotor blade to expand and contract freely under heavy braking, effectively eliminating brake vibration and rotor distortion,” Hallett says. The rotors are available in wide or narrow band options – wide band style is suited for use with OEM-style calipers while the narrow band is for use with smaller aftermarket calipers. EBC also produce a range of solid mount (non-floating) rotors which bolt on with no modifications required.

EBC’s range of custom stainless steel rotors are fully floating discs. Their design means the rotor blade can expand and contract under heavy braking, thus eliminating vibration and rotor distortion.

BRAKE PADS EBC makes four grades of brake pads for American-built motorcycles: Soft, Medium, Heavy-Duty and High-End. Typically offering a lifetime of 15,000 to 20,000 miles, the Soft pads are made of Kevlar organics and essential on billet or chromed rotors to prevent galling. The Medium pads are semi-sintered with a high copper content for longer life, and typically provide a lifetime of 20,000 to 30,000 miles, The Heavy Duty pads are fully sintered and made of a Double-H copper carbon alloy compound. They usually have a lifetime of 30,000 to 50,000 miles. The High End pads are made of premium EPFA sintered copper carbon blend to offer the longest lifetime possible while maintaining a like-new feel. They typically provide between 30,000 to 50,000 miles of use. ■

EBC brake pads are available in four different grades, each one a good fitment for specific applications.

UK and USA Made Brakes That STOP FAST and LOOK GREAT

rag Specialties has a vast selection of consumable items that keep a motorcycle clean, prepped and running. Additionally, Drag has new dealer programs built specifically for its consumable items that dealers like to keep stocked, offering extremely competitive pricing across a wide range of products. Drag Specialties has plenty of oil options, including a selection of fully synthetic and standard oil blends. Choices like the 80W-90 and 85W-140 transmission oils are recommended for Harley-Davidson Big Twins. Meanwhile, SAE 50, 60 and 70 oils are recommended for Pre-Evolution V-twin engines, with the 70-weight ideal for well-worn engines with a lot of miles on them.

Designed to be high-quality as well as economical, Drag’s reusable air filters and premium reusable air filters are 100 percent reusable and washable. The cotton filtration is a high-flow, four-layer design for maximum airflow and effectiveness. The premium version features a precision hand-poured housing and has applications for aftermarket air cleaners from S&S, Screamin’ Eagle and Arlen Ness. Replacement paper air filter elements are available separately, too. Check the Tire & Service catalog for Drag Specialties’ full line of cleaners, degreasers, silicone sprays, polishes and UV protectants. Of course, every oil change needs a new oil filter, and Drag Specialties produces two options. Spin-on oil filters are a high-quality, dependable OEM-type replacement for most Harley-Davidson models, and they come in chrome or black. Drag’s magnetic ring oil filters are also a spin-on style, but they include a magnetic ring in the center of the filter that captures small particles of loose metal. A pressure relief valve is part of the design, and that oil filter comes in chrome.

Oil changes aren’t complete without a new filter, and Drag Specialties has what your customers need – OEM-type replacements and magnetic ring filters that capture loose metal particles.

Drag Specialties also keeps brakes working with brake pads and brake fluid. Drag brake pads are a great OEMtype replacement, and there are sintered, organic DuPont Kevlar and semi-metallic versions available to fit motorcycle models going back decades. Drag’s premium sintered metal brake pads are designed specifically for Harleys. More durable than stock pads, the premium version prevents brake dust, noise and brake fade. The pad’s backing plate features a high-tech ceramic heat shield that keeps heat away from the caliper piston and brake fluid.

The signal inserts feature an outer ring of 24 white LEDs that provide a cool-white driving light, while the inner ring has 24 amber LEDs for a bright amber turn signal.

Customers can opt for a bullet-style insert (p/n 20201755) or a flat-style insert (p/n 2020-1756). Both have a 1157 bulb base. The turn signal inserts are sold in pairs and arrive in Drag Specialties’ Premium Packaging, making them an attractive addition on a shelf or display. A lifetime warranty is part of the package, too. The inserts must be used with a clear or smoked lens, both available separately through Drag Specialties.

The front dual ring turn signal inserts and LED bulbs are an easy upgrade over stock incandescent bulbs, providing brilliant illumination, longevity and looks. Both of the new parts are manufactured by Custom Dynamics, a longtime powersports company that concentrates on high-quality LED lighting solutions for motorcycles. The Drag Specialties front dual ring turn signal inserts feature an LED cluster with a 2-inch diameter. An outer ring of 24 white LEDs provides a bright cool-white driving light, while the inner ring has 24 amber LEDs for an exceptionally bright amber turn signal. The inserts are designed so that when a turn signal is activated, the white LEDs turn off completely for the duration of the turn signal cycle. This allows the amber turn signal to be seen more clearly for a visible riding experience.

The Drag Specialties LED bulbs upgrade conventional 1156 and 1157 bulb-style turn signals to LED turn signals. The plug-and-play bulbs are sold in pairs and come in both bullet-style and flat-style options. The 1156 bulb base style include amber and red color choices, while the 1157 bulb base style comes in red only. The LED bulbs have a wide viewing angle to make the lights highly visible. (Dealers should note that a load equalizer might be necessary.) LED lighting has a range of advantages over traditional incandescent bulbs. They typically offer greater visibility while using less power, sometimes consuming up to 80 percent less power than a traditional bulb. LED lights also switch on faster than an incandescent bulb, which is especially advantageous with brake lights. LEDs have a longer lifespan and better reliability than an incandescent bulb. While a standard bulb might have about 10,000 hours of usage, an LED bulb can last for more than 50,000 hours. ■

TIRES

The Long Haul

High-Mileage Touring Tires Dunlop’s American Elite replacement tires for HarleyDavidson Touring and cruiser models offer exceptional mileage potential and the distinction of being made in the USA.

D

unlop believes that a premium American motorcycle deserves a premium American tire. American Elite replacement tires for HarleyDavidson Touring and cruiser models offer exceptional mileage potential and the distinction of being made in the USA. The American Elite tires are designed and manufactured in Dunlop’s American facilities. Testing is conducted at the Dunlop Proving Grounds, a world-class motorcycle testing facility in Huntsville, Alabama. All manufacturing occurs at the company’s plant in Buffalo, New York. In all, there are 28 different tire options designed to fit most Harley models, as well as select Indian and Victory motorcycles. The most distinctive feature of the American Elite tire is the Dunlop MT Multi-Tread™ rear-tire technology that offers great handling characteristics and high mileage capabilities. There are two compounds in the rear tire to offer the best possible combination of those features. The center of the tread is constructed of a long-wearing compound, while the shoulders are made of a compound designed to offer superior lateral grip.

The American Elite tire is also available in a stylish white wall, a classic look for any cruiser or Bagger.

MT Multi-Tread technology offers a range of benefits over a single-compound tire design, including longer wear, greater lean angle, better stability, more wet grip, more neutral steering characteristics and greater bump compliance. American Elite tires are also designed to have an even tread wear and quiet operations in all riding conditions, including wet and dry. That even wear helps add to the American Elite’s high-mileage capabilities. The front and rear American Elite tires are available in black, in a narrow white sidewall stripe, or in a wide white sidewall stripe. Each tire is emblazoned with the American Elite name. The tires are H-rated for speeds up to 130 mph or V-rated for speeds up to 149 mph. In addition to American Elite, Dunlop has a variety of touring tires to fit every rider’s style. Other Dunlop options for Touring and cruiser models include the Elite 4, D402 and D401 tires.

MT Multi-Tread technology offers a range of benefits – longer wear, greater lean angle, better stability, more wet grip, more neutral steering and greater bump compliance.

The Elite 4 tires also feature MT Multi-Tread technology, as well as a bold tread pattern that offers excellent grip in all weather conditions. For riders who deal with rain frequently, the Elite 4 touring/custom tire’s tread pattern provides premium wet-pavement performance and stability over rain grooves, steel bridge decks, and tar stripes. The D402 touring tires and D401 tires are both co-branded with Harley-Davidson. The compounds and tread patterns are specially designed to meet the demands of the models they are built for. The D402 tire’s three-ply, fiberglass-belt design offers great load-carrying capacity, stability and long life, while the computer-optimized tread pattern offers rider confidence in all conditions. Likewise, the D401 is designed for outstanding grip in wet and dry conditions as well as long tire life. ■

Performance Shift

High-Tech Clutch Kits for V-Twins

M

any riders will agree that the worst part of sitting in traffic is the constant use of the clutch lever. Rekluse has solutions for riders who want a high-performance manual clutch and for riders who don’t want to deal with a clutch lever at all when stuck in stop-and-go traffic.

TorqDrive, which is found in Rekluse’s automatic and manual clutches, allows more friction disks to fit into less space, including up to six more than a stock clutch pack.

The V-twin RadiusX clutch kit is an automatic clutch for Harley-Davidsons, while the V-twin TorqDrive manual clutch kit improves clutch response and torque. Rekluse also has the Core EXP 3.0 automatic clutch specifically for Sportsers. Rekluse actually got its start as an automatic clutch producer after founder Al Youngwerth had bought one from another company for his off-road bike. The whole experience was so disappointing that Youngwerth decided motorcycle riders deserved something better. Since Rekluse is based in Boise, Idaho, Youngwerth turned to Boise State University’s TechHelp program, which partnered him with a student engineer. The partnership resulted in a successful prototype, and Rekluse was ready to start producing automatic clutches in 2002. That first V-twin clutch design was good, but as the Rekluse philosophy goes, “Good enough is not good enough.” The clutch required a complex installation, so Youngwerth went back to square one – the design process. With a strong focus on innovative technology and premium quality, the second version of the clutch incorporated new features like Rekluse’s EXP automatic clutch technology and TorqDrive for improved performance. The automatic clutch, as well as a high-performance manual clutch, were both introduced to the V-twin The V-twin RadiusX automatic clutch kit features TorqDrive technology, and includes Rekluse basket sleeves, which eliminate basket wear and notching. The clutch requires no modifications.

market at Sturgis in 2014. All Rekluse products are developed, manufactured and assembled in-house at the company’s 16,000-square-foot facility in Boise. EXP and TorqDrive technologies are the biggest selling points of Rekluse clutches. EXP technology allows riders to start and stop without touching the clutch, which ensures stalling is a thing of the past. EXP aims to offer the best of both worlds – riders still maintain full clutching and shifting capabilities, but the ability to tackle stop-and-go situations without using the clutch lever make EXP ideal for traffic and other slow-speed riding. EXP also ensures that riders can enjoy precision throttle control. The EXP technology works using principles of centrifugal force, automatically engaging and disengaging the clutch based on engine rpm. While each clutch arrives tuned to the model it is made for, they can be further fine-tuned to suit a rider’s own style with different spring options. Some riders like the clutch to engage just above idle, while others like more gradual engagement. TorqDrive, which is found in Rekluse’s automatic and manual clutches, allows more friction disks to fit into less space, including up to six more than a stock clutch pack. While some clutch setups for high-horsepower engines add stiffer springs or make the clutch lever feel inconsistent, Rekluse relies on the increased friction caused by adding more discs. The result is increased torque capacity, but the reliability and consistency of the clutch lever is not hindered. In fact, TorqDrive is designed to provide smoother shifting and improved lever feel over stock clutch setups. The friction

The TorqDrive design includes a steel core instead of an aluminum one, which is common in OEM clutches. When heated, steel expands less than half as much as aluminum, which helps prevent clutch fade. The material for the friction discs was also carefully researched to enable increased longevity over stock. Rekluse V-twin RadiusX automatic clutch kits and V-twin TorqDrive manual clutch kits both feature TorqDrive technology. Both styles of clutches also include Rekluse basket sleeves, which eliminate basket wear and notching. Both clutches do not require any modifications to stock components of the motorcycle. The Core EXP 3.0 clutch kit is similar to the RadiusX kit, but it is designed specifically for Sportsters. The OEM Sportster clutch design is unique among Harley models, so Rekluse designed Core EXP 3.0 with a replacement billet pressure plate and center clutch, features that are not required in other applications. Like the other V-Twin clutch kits, the Core EXP 3.0 kit includes Rekluse’s EXP technology, and no modifications to stock components are required. The Core EXP 3.0 is designed to improve lever feel, clutch performance

and durability. Increased oil passages in the center hub and pressure plate move more oil through the clutch, decreasing operating temperatures and extending the clutch life. ■

Built for the Ride

Piggyback and Remote Reservoir REVO Shocks

L

egend Suspensions now has REVO piggyback shocks for those Harley-Davidson models popular among the performance crowd – Dynas, Sportsters and FXRs. For your FL-riding customers, there’s the REVO remote reservoir. Building on the success of the REVO and REVO-A, Legend Suspensions has really expanded the concept of a moderately priced coil-style suspension. While the new shocks still feature Legend’s specially wound springs that deliver a wider, more comfortable sweet spot, the REVO piggyback and REVO remote reservoir contain a host of new features. The bodies, the pistons and seals, the valve-shim stacks, the piggybacks and remote reservoirs themselves, everything is new. Engineered from the ground up specific to their application – Dyna, Sportster, FXR or FL – the shocks have a racy look and are built to perform, thanks to dualadjustable compression and rebound damping. There are no tools required for those great adjustable features, meaning that the REVO piggyback and remote reservoir shocks can easily be dialed in for any rider or riding style, on the fly. With all that easy-access adjustability the shocks can be fine-tuned, everything from casual cruising to the most aggressive action.

Your FL-riding customers can also enjoy that REVO-inspired performance thanks to the new remote reservoir model, which can be adjusted for everything from cruising to canyon carving.

Both versions, piggyback and remote reservoir, function the same way; the only difference being the location of their reservoirs, with that remote version designed for FL applications to allow room for saddlebags. That newly designed adjustable compression/rebound compliance is coupled with an ultra-fast response time. Unlike ordinary internal-piston reservoirs, Legend Suspensions has used nitrogen bladders in the reservoirs here. As a result, the shock absorbers react much more quickly and without any stiction, immediately responding to any irregularities in the road surface, large or small. Further smoothing out the feel, compliance and responsiveness the shocks also feature new, low-friction seals throughout. REVO Piggybacks and Remote-Reservoirs are offered in standard and heavy-duty applications. Heavy-duty is recommended when rider/passenger loads exceed 500 pounds for FL models, 250 pounds for Dyna, Sportster, FXR models. Both styles come with a black, Type III hardcoat anodized finish. ■

New 550 Cam Chest Kit The new 550 cam chest kits from S&S Cycle feature everything needed for installation. Combined with a high-flow air cleaner and exhaust header, the kit provides a nice boost in power and torque.

Designed for 114 cubic inch and larger 2017 to 2019 Milwaukee-Eight powered Harleys, that whopping 550 cam will kick out 120hp and 128 lbs of torque on a 114 inch motor that’s only been further modified with a high-flow air cleaner and header. That is a simple, bolt-in upgrade that shows a real, and serious, improvement boost. The kits include everything necessary to get the job done – cam, outer drive gears for gear drive kits, a cam plate, tappets, tappet cuffs, highflow oil pump, a Quickee pushrod kit, heavy duty valve springs, and all the needed bearings and gaskets. Dealers should note that the tappet cuffs are mandatory for use with high lift cams.

H

arley-Davidson’s MilwaukeeEight motor is already firmly embedded in the storied timeline of the Motor Company’s range of V-twin engines. Just as motorcycle enthusiasts throughout the ages have talked about Panheads, Shovels and Evos, they’re now talking about the M-8. And, when the conversation is about the engines that sit at the heart of their favorite brand of motorcycles, the subject will inevitably turn to boosting torque and cranking up the horsepower. It’s a conversation as old as the internal combustion motor, and it’s a language that S&S Cycle knows fluently. After all, wringing more power out of a 45-degree powerplant is an intractable part of the company’s DNA, and is still its main focus and drive. So with those M-8 engines now spread out across a range of Harley-Davidson models, S&S Cycle has wicked up the R&D efforts for new, as well as tried-and-true methods of bumping up the ponies. The latest offering to hit the FatBook is S&S Cycle’s massive 550 cam chest kit.

The new high-flow oil pump that’s included in S&S Cycle’s cam chest kit offers an impressive 44 percent increase in flow, and a 58 percent scavenge increase when paired with a chain or gear drive cam. Here’s another important point. All of those parts included in the kit are specifically designed to work perfectly together, meaning once the install is completed, the work is done. Next up for your customers is a serious, reliable power boost at the twist of a wrist. ■

Wake Up That Engine

Treated for Winter, Fired Up in Spring stabilized, gums and other debris can form as the fuel ages, clogging carburetors or injectors, making engines difficult to start or to run rough. The engine is fine – the fuel is the problem. Star Tron is engineered to stabilize fuel for up to two years, making it perfect for keeping the gas fresh in motorcycles that are put away for the winter. Star Tron is a year-round fuel treatment that does much more than just stabilize that fuel during storage. According to the company, Star Tron’s enzymes also help improve combustibility by allowing more oxygen to attach to hydrocarbon fuel molecules. A more complete burn of the fuel charge translates into more power, less emissions or engine deposits, and better fuel economy. If gum or other debris is already in the fuel, or carbon deposits are present, Star Tron’s enzymes break them apart to be dispersed throughout the fuel, eliminating them while the engine operates, the company says.

Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment can help improve the performance of motorcycles and other gas-powered engines. Its proprietary formula helps fuel burn more completely and helps break down debris that can gum up a carburetor or fuel injector.

J

.W. Speaker knows a thing or two about high-tech lighting solutions for powersports applications. The company also knows that tastes and budgets differ, which is why they have LED lighting upgrades to match. Whether it’s good, better or best, J.W. Speaker has a product for the category. The 8700 EVO 2 Dual Burn headlights are a quality midrange LED headlight featuring a classic headlight design and solid optics technology. The 7-inch headlight features Dual Burn™ high-beam technology that combines the low and high beam for maximum punch down the road and foreground illumination.

The real difference between the two headlight options is J.W. Speaker’s Adaptive technology, which allows the light to sense when the bike is leaning so it can redirect the beam to illuminate dark corners. In slightly more technical terms, the light calculates bank angles on a real-time basis using proprietary technology and on-board sensors, automatically directing the light array up or down as the motorcycle leans. J.W. Speaker says many customers don’t want to go back to traditional lights after experiencing Adaptive technology firsthand, especially when it comes to dealing with winding roads and wildlife.

The effective light output of the high beam increases about 10 percent with this technology, offering superb lighting that is still street legal. It also includes optics that create ComfortLite™ in high beam mode for more light over the horizon, ditch to ditch.

The 8790 Adaptive 2 headlights retail for $665.95, come in black or chrome and are available in a straight bucket or mounting ring kit configuration. Pedestal mounted versions for seven-inch lights are the 8791 or 8791 Adaptive. HANDLEBARS

Patent Perfection

Easy to Install Viking Handlebars It’s also hard telling the customer how much you have to charge for installation labor, and no doubt this is very frustrating for everyone. So wouldn’t it be better to avoid the hassle and get the bike done quickly? The customer will be happy you saved them money, and now you can move on to another job. Magnum’s solution was novel enough to apply for a design patent. Always innovating, Magnum Shielding designed its Viking bar specifically to make them easy to install internal wiring harnesses. The company not only engineered a design that provides a clean, burr-free internal radius, but one that also creates 50 percent additional clearance within that troublesome peak of the handlebar. The pocket has enough room to allow the complete wiring harness with the factory vinyl covering and the terminal connections (when wiring extensions are added), along with their respective shrink sleeves to easily pass through and be installed without any hang-up or frustration. Electronic throttle control wires can even be pulled through at the same time.

Magnum Shielding designed its Viking bar specifically for making the installation of internal wiring harnesses easier. The design provides a clean, burr-free internal radius, one that creates 50 percent more clearance within that troublesome peak of the handlebar.

I

f your customers are considering using Magnum Shielding’s new Viking handlebars, you may have just hit the installation Trifecta. It’s a great looking design, an absolute breeze to wire, and of course, it has Magnum quality. Depending on the type of handlebars being installed, running internal wiring can be the worst part of your service department’s day. Your techs can spend hours trying to get the wiring to pass through the corner only to end up chafing or damaging the wiring in the process.

According to the company, the peak of the handlebar is comprised of two angled cut bars whereas at least one of them, and preferably both, is flared at the bottom of the oval cut. This method significantly increases the pivot radius of the internal space and provides for an open and smooth path for the wiring harness to follow. Alternatively, a notch can be cut out for a radius insert to bridge the gap. A smooth internal surface alone isn’t enough if the goal is to be able to run the vinyl covered harness (as is) through the handlebar, which is why Magnum’s patented design is so unique and easy to use. To make the job even easier, Magnum includes its EZ pull-thru sleeving, which is pre-loaded into every Viking handlebar. Just insert the wiring harness into the sleeve and pull the wires through the bars. The handlebars are 1¼-inch diameter, work with standard controls including hydraulic clutch, are CNC mandrel bent for an accurate fit, and incorporate wrist angles engineered for riding comfort. These aggressive-looking Viking handlebars are available in 10-inch, 12-inch, 14-inch and 16-inch Bagger, and 12-inch, 14-inch and 16-inch ape hanger styles. Both are available with high luster chrome or gloss black finishes. ■

SUSPENSION

Shocking Performance

The New 990 Sport Series Shocks unique circuits. It’s a design engineered to deliver a consistent feel through the damper stroke for improved performance and stability. Progressive Suspension has also included a new and improved jounce bumper feature that helps to smooth out and control the shock from bottoming out during an impact. And then there are those piggyback and remote reservoirs, both known for offering high performance in a suspension. Now, no one’s suggesting that a Harley-Davidson shock is ever going to get worked anywhere near as hard as, say, a motocross racer, a prime beneficiary of these types of reservoir design.

Progressive Suspension’s 990 Sport Series piggyback shocks add a new level of suspension performance for those twin-shock Harley-Davidson models.

P

rogressive Suspension’s new 990 Sport Series shocks can give your customers all the adjustability needed for custom tuning the ride, ride height, the handling and the feel of their bikes for whatever style of riding comes up on the menu. The 990 Sport Series shocks come in two different styles – a piggyback reservoir version for twin-shock HarleyDavidson Dynas, FXRs and Sportsters, and a remote reservoir version for saddlebag equipped FL models. Whether it’s cruising, touring, aggressive sport riding or anything in between, the 990 Sport Series shocks can be dialed-in to the occasion.

However, just like a 124-inch plus engine that offers buckets of horsepower, horsepower not accessed on a daily basis, but is there when called upon, the same holds true for piggyback and remote reservoirs on the shocks of a street-bound Harley. Those external reservoirs increase fluid and gas capacity, which helps lower operating temperature so the suspension performs better under all riding conditions. And, aside from that improved ride quality, both offer a hot-rod look that’s a serious upgrade over the stock suspension. The 990 Sport Series shocks are hand-built, tuned and dyno tested in the Progressive Suspension facility and backed with a Lifetime Warranty. ■

The most adjustable shock Progressive Suspension has ever offered the V-twin market, the 990 Sport Series doesn’t miss a thing. The versatility of the shocks starts with a 0.4-inch adjustable height mounting eyelet. Thanks to a newly designed, lightweight aluminum body, the 990 Sport Series shock also includes rebound damping adjustment along with both high- and lowspeed compression damping adjustment. All of it can be dialed-in via easily accessible external knobs. The shock design also allows for quick hand-adjustment of the spring preload, so no tools are required. All that’s on the outside, what you see. Internally, the 990 Sport Series is equally impressive. The 990 Sport Series features a high-pressure monotube with deflective-disc damping routed through two

ust when you thought the T-Bar game couldn’t be topped, LA Choppers releases its Kage Fighter modular T-Bar.

This new bar offers the looks of a classic narrow T-Bar, but with the adjustability of a handlebar with a top clamp. That’s because it has a separate riser that mounts to the bars, allowing your customers to change the angle at which the bar is mounted. Not all your customers are equally sized, as such LA Choppers opted to release a TBar that can be modified specifically to match the rider’s height and riding style. Choppers might be a main part of the company’s name, but LA Choppers definitely knows a thing or two about performance Harley-Davidsons, and about the controls that breed of rider likes to use when out carving up the road. In fact, LA Choppers parent company and manufacturing facility actually produces many of the handlebars currently available in the market today. Anything from Bagger bars to T-Bars, the company has decades of experience designing and building handlebars. These new Kage Fighter bars are available in five different heights, and four different finishes. There’s the standard chrome, gloss black, and matte black. There is also a new Shot Peen Stainless top bar, a new finish that offers a killer raw stainless steel look that would match well with a stainless exhaust system.

78

Available riser heights are 2 inches, 4 inches, 6 inches, 8 inches, and 10 inches. End rises are 6 inches, 8 inches, 10 inches, 12 inches, and 14 inches. Pull back risers are also available with end rises of 9 inches, 11 inches and 13 inches.

Kage Fighter bars mount via a unique top clamp that is then attached to risers that come in a variety of sizes. The setup can be mixed and matched for a personalized fit.

Complete kits that include all items necessary to mount the risers and bars onto a bike are available, but now the kits can be pieced together separately. The customer can choose which finish they would like for a top bar, the finish and height for the risers, and then the finish for the top clamp. This way the whole setup can be personalized, for endless combinations. Kage Fighter bars will mount up to any bike that allows for handlebars to be mounted 3½ inches on center. Some bikes require additional modifications. ■

AUDIO EQUIPMENT

Power Bars!

Small Package, Big Audio Kuryakyn partnered with renowned mobile-audio experts MTX in 2016 to introduce the Road Thunder collection, a lineup of high-powered audio accessories specifically designed for motorcycles and other powersports vehicles. One of the collection’s top performers was the original 150-watt Sound Bar, which laid the foundation for an entirely new beast in the Sound Bar Plus. The 300-watt Sound Bar Plus packs twice the power out of the same compact unit. In addition to the increased power, a newly integrated 1.0-amp USB charging port lets riders keep their devices fully charged on the road.

Kuryakyn’s Road Thunder Sound Bar Plus by MTX is also available in a satin silver finish in addition to satin black.

A

lot of variables come into play when judging the performance of handlebar-mounted audio. From fairings or windshields to helmet styles and aftermarket versus stock exhaust, advising your customers how to get the best bang without spending all their bucks can be daunting. Kuryakyn’s new 300-watt Road Thunder Sound Bar Plus by MTX Audio is poised to ease the struggle.

The weather-resistant sealed USB port serves as the only noticeable cosmetic change made to the housing, but don’t be deceived by the minimal exterior updates. In the case of the Sound Bar Plus, it’s what changed inside that counts. Hidden within the durable weather-resistant IP66-rated housing is a new-and-improved anatomy. An internal 4-channel amplifier powers two 2” x 3” full-range speakers with dual voice coil, and four high-frequency 1” silk dome tweeters with upgraded N42-grade magnets. The updated magnets and speakers handle the Sound Bar Plus’ higher power output effortlessly, delivering distortion-free highs and lows at any volume level. Additionally, the newly integrated heat sink and selfprotection circuit manage operating temperature and voltage regulation to optimize battery draw. The Sound Bar Plus is also equipped with the same internal 3.0 Bluetooth receiver for convenient wireless music playback from anywhere within the vehicle’s proximity.

The Sound Bar Plus’ internal Bluetooth receiver allows convenient wire-free playback on or off the bike.

An auxiliary 3.5mm input port connects non-Bluetooth devices via cable, while the 3.5mm output port can be used to connect external amps, additional Road Thunder Sound Bars or 3-inch Speaker Pods to really pump up the volume. The compact housing and patent-pending mounting clamp system provides near-universal installation on almost all 7/8-inch, 1-inch and 1¼-inch handlebars or crash bars. That, combined with its IP66 rating for dust- and water-resistant durability, means the Sound Bar Plus is capable of safe operation in a variety of riding environments. All Sound Bar Plus kits feature a quick-connect harness that allows easy removal for storage, and installation is accomplished through standard power, ground and ignition connectivity. ■

WHEELS

Pro-Am Wheels

Forged, Lightweight Performance the new Pro-Am brings with it plenty of performance to go with that colorful, custom style. Those back-cut rims, for instance, are about more than just looks. By backcutting the rims at their outermost areas, Performance Machine has further reduced the weight of an already lightweight design. The Pro-Am wheels are 2 pounds lighter, on average, than any other wheel in the Image Series. Couple that design with the stylized and custom-machined spokes and the result is a significant decrease in unsprung weight and rotational inertia. The payoff is an enhanced ride, better performance, crisper handling and an overall improvement in rider feel.

Performance Machine installed the Gold Ops Pro-Am forged wheels on its latest build – the Bay Bay Blue Dyna – and the look is nothing short of stunning

F

ive lightweight and custom-machined directional spokes. Stylized and back-cut rim lips. Black Ops and a brand-new Gold Ops textured finish. Matching brake rotors, sprockets and pulleys.

All of the above describes the Pro-Am wheel package, the latest addition to the Performance Machine lineup of Image Series forged wheels. Brand-new and built for performance, they’re available now through Drag Specialties. Pro-Am wheels, in either of those available finishes, make a bold, custom statement. That textured Gold Ops version, especially. But either way, Black Ops or Gold Ops,

The Pro-Am’s lightweight design doesn’t mean decreased strength or stability. Like every Performance Machine forged wheel, the Pro-Am was designed and engineered to meet and exceed some pretty stringent and specific standards. Tested and re-tested in-house to ensure quality and performance, Performance Machine’s engineers begin with computer-simulated stress analysis and follow that with even more specialized test equipment to assess the wheel’s ability to withstand cornering stress, radial and torsional loads, impacts and the effects of hard braking or full-throttle shifts on both the wheel and its rotor. Performance Machine’s testing is famously rigorous. For instance, the cornering test subjects the wheel to more than twice its maximum tire load for more than a million cycles. Every other test is just as tough and if a wheel doesn’t come through each with flying colors, it’s back to the drawing board for a full re-design. The new, lightweight Pro-Am is completely manufactured in the USA. Performance Machine also offers matching sprockets, pulleys and brake rotors, which are available in three sizes. ■

Heavy Lifting

Performance Valve Lifters When your customers come in for a cam swap, also suggest a new set of lifters to add performance, extend valvetrain longevity and enhance engine efficiency. Feuling has a range of lifters that covers all possible upgrades.

I

t’s tempting to leave new valve lifters out of the parts list during a cam swap and it’s false economy. Stepping up to a new set of lifters adds performance, extends valvetrain longevity and enhances engine efficiency overall. It’s smart engine building and Feuling Parts has the full lineup ready.

Feuling’s HP+, Race Series (in either full- or short-travel) and the Race Series Solid Lifters cover all possible situations and they’re available for Evos, Twin Cams, Sportsters, Buells and the Milwaukee-Eight. The HP+ lifters, true performance upgrades, are drop-in replacements and applicable for most mild cam swaps. They’ll optimize oil flow to the top end for cooler running, reduced wear, and extended life of the entire valvetrain. They’re quiet, too, and with everything CNC machined and precision ground they’re quality pieces built to last. The Race Series lifters, recommended when valve-spring seat pressure exceeds 185 pounds, take things to the next level. In addition to a slower bleed-down rate – especially welcome when high-lift cams and high-pressure springs enter the equation – Race Series lifters are available in those full- or short-travel versions. Where the full-travel lifters have a total of 0.200-inch piston travel, the short-travel lifters, with 0.115-inch travel, can work well with steeply ramped, fast-action, high-lift camshaft lobes. They reduce the amount of oil required to fill the inside of the lifter, reduce oil aeration and provide a fully-filled lifter when the lifter rolls around to the front of that cam-lobe ramp. All this can significantly increase rpm limits, decrease valve float and valve-train harmonics, maintain quiet engine operation and maximize lift. When things get really serious there are the Feuling Race Series Solids. These lifters are designed to work with radical valve-spring pressures and extreme-lift camshafts. They’re designed to maximize valve lift for maximum-performance engines, street or strip. ■

»» HP+, Race Series or Solids, performance valve lifters should be part of every cam swap, mild to wild. Talk with your Drag rep for all the details and check out www.feulingparts.com.

He and his wife Pam are also regular attendees of Drag Specialties’ Dealer Rides, and in 2014 his shop was named Dealer of the Year at the Chattahoochee River Run. Always busy, things don’t slow down all that much when the first snows begin to fly. Shifting gears, Fentzke will turn up the thermostat dial on the wall, put on a pot of coffee and get busy building some full-on customs for the new season to come. Bikes like this one, a vibrant Ford Blue 2016 Street Glide put together for Robert and Linda Skimin of

Not a bad way to spend the winter, or for riders like Robert and Linda, a way to welcome in the spring. “I’ve been doing this since I was a teenager,” Fentzke says, referencing all that in-season work on motorcycles for others and the off-season creation of award-winning customs. In 1992 he made it his full-time passion and opened Performance Fabrication. Not breaking stride from one season to the next, Fentzke relies heavily on the FatBook for those wintertime projects just as he does for all the tires, brakes and parts that keep his customers up and running for the summer. This Street Glide is the perfect example and, as wild and swoopy as it is, it’s mostly all bolt-ons making the difference. EZ Install Handlebars and Kits In addition to that two-piece construction, the bars also feature a unique design that gives them a large internal cavity that allows your techs to pull the wires easily through the tubing without fear of catching a snag. FBI’s EZ Install Handlebars are CNC mandrel-bent from big, 1¼-inch/.120-wall tubing, and available in a PointedTop or Round-Top style. They’re available with 10-inch, 12-inch, 14-inch and 16-inch rises, with the choice of a chrome or gloss black finish.

The two-piece handlebars bolt together in a uniquely designed union that is secured underneath the handlebar clamp.

H

igh-rise handlebars add attitude. On a touring bike, they’ll take an ordinary looking Bagger to a whole new level of cool.

The bars feature an extra spacious interior cavity that makes pulling wires through a snap.

The custom builders at Fat Baggers, Inc., have known this for years and now they’ve made that stock-to-cool conversion easier than ever. FBI’s EZ Install Handlebars – a patent pending two-piece design – cuts installation time way down by eliminating all the hassle of internal-wiring snags. The handlebars are made with a patented two-piece construction that bolts together via a solid fastening area that secures the two pieces under the handlebar clamp. Not only does the design save time on installation, the two-piece design means the packaging is half the size of standard handlebars, saving dealers a lot of space and freight cost.

They are constructed at Fat Baggers’s headquarters in Iowa, carrying on the company’s Made in the USA tradition. Applications cover most all Harley-Davidson FL-models from 2008 through 2019, both cable- and hydraulic-clutch. Along with the easy wiring-pulls the new handlebars allow, Fat Baggers has a full selection of applicationspecific EZ Install Handlebar Kits, which includes extensions for the existing clutch cable/clutch line, brake line and wiring. By extending the existing lines, late-model Harleys with linked braking become much easier to work with since there is no need to bleed the brakes. It also means that independent motorcycle shops can easily install the handlebars.

High-rise handlebars offer a big statement on a V-twin Bagger. FBI’s EZ Install Handlebars make adding a set of custom bars a simple procedure for your service techs.

All the kits are designed around OEM components, too, so fitment never becomes an issue. Where applicable, BDL even includes two screw-in shift shaft cones, one for toe-shift-only riders and one for the heel/ toe crowd. From the tooth-count/gearing of the pulleys to the unique belt profiles, to the performance Aramid Fiber clutch plate sets and super-duty pressure plates nothing’s left out, nothing’s left to chance. ■

Milwaukee-Eight® Engine Main Seal Puller

JIMS left main seal remover safely inserts its removal fingers over the engine’s output shaft, locks in place and allows easy seal removal without any chance of case damage. The balancer bearing reBalancer bearing installer mover will get the balancer bearings in both Touring and Softail models out without damage to the crankcase. The balancer bearing installer allows precise installation of those bearings in their proper location, critical to avoid severe crankcase damage and engine failure. The installer doesn’t need a driver or press, either. JIMS also has a new engine stand for the Softail specific Milwaukee-Eight engine. A sturdy, 7-gauge steel work platform, it’s built for years of use. ■

More Than Three Decades of Power

N

ow in its 37th year of business, Cycle Electric, Inc. is a major manufacturer of charging system components for use on Harley-Davison and other American made V-twin motorcycles.

Offering charging systems to cover models from 1936 to present day, the company manufactures all of its generators, regulators, rectifying regulators and stators in its Brookville, OH, factory and sources original equipment rotors. A range of those products are all available in the FatBook and OldBook. Cycle Electric’s rectifying regulators control voltage on Harley-Davidson and Buell alternators. The company’s rectifying regulators block current to control voltage; this reduces stator current, resulting in low temperature and less drag on the motor, which means more efficient operation. Plus, the low-voltage style offers reduced charging voltage to prevent overcharging the battery. Cycle Electric’s stators are designed as direct OEM replacements for bikes developing 18 to 50 amps. Does your customer’s bike need a full system tune-up? The company’s full alternator kits include stator, rotor, black rectifying voltage regulator and mounting hardware. Offering more power out of a smaller stator, Cycle Electric’s 3-Phase 38A charging kit delivers 17A at 1000rpm and 38A at 2500rpm. They are available for 1991 to 2003 XL models, 1999 to 2003 FXD and FXDWG models, and 2001 to 2006 FXST and FLST models. Said to offer improved durability and dependability over a stock 48A system, Cycle Electric’s 3-Phase 50A Charging Kits produce 32A at 1000rpm and 50A at 2500rpm and are available for FL, FXS and Dyna models. “Our first priority is quality; our second priority is customer service,” says Cycle Electric founder and president Karl Fahringer. “Our craftsmen take the extra time throughout the manufacturing process to make sure everything is just right, with all parts tested individually and then again as an assembly. All this adds up to one thing – products that work and keep on working.” All Cycle Electric, Inc. products are guaranteed for two years. Any Cycle Electric, Inc. product found to be defective within two years of the original purchase date should be returned to Cycle Electric for repair or replacement. ■

Fast Style Upgrades

K

en’s Factory knows that riders want to make their Bagger look good without wasting time, so the company has some easy-to-install Bagger parts that offer a style upgrade in just minutes.

Neo-Fusion is one of the most popular design families at Ken’s Factory, and the line’s clutch master cylinder cover comes with the necessary hardware and bolts on with no hassle. The cover is machined from a lightweight 2017 billet aluminum, and it is available in polished, chrome or black machine finishes. Like the other black machine options in the Neo-Fusion line, the clutch master cylinder cover in that finish has raw aluminum contrast cuts for an extra dose of style. Another option for the front of the bike is the Ken’s Factory ignition switch cover. It is also made from 2017 billet aluminum and has the same finish options as the NeoFusion clutch master cylinder cover, making it a great complement to that piece. Ken’s Factory has several gas cap options, and the dimpled, channeled gas cap cover is one that installs quickly.

With parts like the Neo-Fusion ignition switch cover and saddlebag latches, Ken’s Factory offers your Bagger customers easy-to-install, bolt-on style upgrades.

The quality machined cover comes in a polished or black machine finish and offers a big upgrade over the look of a stock gas cap.

Popular Touring Seats

ePera Motorcycle Seats knows that not all touring tastes are the same, so the company makes a wide range of options. These five seats lead the best-seller list. The Maverick combines aesthetics Maverick and comfort, blending in with the lines of the bike. The 15½-inch wide driver seating area has a tapered thigh area to increase comfort. A deep sculpted design provides back support, and a removable backrest is available, too. The passenger seat is a comfortable 13½-inches wide. The Maverick Daddy Long Legs has the same design cues as the Maverick, but the rider’s seating area is moved 2 inches further back to provide extra room, resulting in a more comfortable stance for a tall rider. Both Maverick styles are available in a Smooth or Stitch finish. The KickFlip offers comfort with extended back support and ample seating, too, but it is also a good platform for showing off. It is available in Diamond, Pleated, Basket

KickFlip in Diamond pattern

Weave and Pleated Gripp Tape finishes. The latter is for riders who need extra traction when the occasion calls for it. The Bare Bones is a solo seat with a low profile that looks great on both stock and custom touring bikes. Pillion seats are available to match, and both come in Smooth, Diamond or Pleated finishes. The Villain is a bold design in solo and two-up styles. Ideal for making a statement, it comes in Smooth, Diamond and Pleated finishes, as well as an eye-catching black and brown. ■
