The result is that the motorcycle business is really good right now. Service items especially, such as tires, oil, filters and more are selling great, and dealers report good sales on tools and Do-It-Yourself products. People have more time now and garage projects are happening more than ever. Keep a Drag Specialties FatBook handy for your customers to browse thru so they can see all the many options they have for their motorcycles. Your Drag sales rep, of course, is there for you if need anything. In this issue, be sure to check out the latest in high-performance exhaust systems from one of the industry’s veteran pipe builders, Darryl Bassani. He’s always focused on how to squeeze another pony or two out of a Big Twin, and now every Harley and Indian rider, even those on Baggers, want all they can get. Speaking of Baggers, at press time, the first-ever Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race was still on tap at the GEICO Motorcycle MotoAmerica Superbike Columbia Pictures photo / Don Emde Collection Speedfest in Monterey, California the weekend of October 23-25. Last report we had was the race was on, but a final decision was still to be made about n 1953, the legendary movie “The Wild One” starring Marlon Brando, left an imprint in the minds of the general population allowing spectators. If you plan to attend, be sure to stay tuned to the about what motorcycling looked to be all about. While those who MotoAmerica.com website for the latest info. ■ rode knew we were good people, nobody else on your block did. To this day, some mothers and fathers still do their best to make sure Ride Safe! their kids don’t become one of them.

I

The motorcycle sport and industry has come a long way since Brando’s character Johnny Strabler tore up the town of Hollister, California. It obviously grew into a legitimate hobby, sport and method of transportation, but many riders were still seen as the misfits of their neighborhood. How times have changed. Back in February, when most of us heard the word coronavirus for the first time, millions of people lost their jobs, at least temporarily, and social distancing limited their world to their homes and yards. Some hit their couches to watch TV, while others spent many hours a day on their computers keeping up on the latest social media chatter. Not everyone was home bound, however. The men and women with motorcycles in their garages and time on their hands were hitting the road. Now when a bike fires up in the neighborhood, the rest watch from their windows with envy as riders head out for their next adventure. Suddenly motorcycles got cool and with less cars out on the roads, it became a great time for a road trip.

One of the dozen “Race Baggers” scheduled for the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers event at Laguna Seca will be this hot-rod Harley from Barnett.

fter nine seasons in American Flat Track’s premier class, Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider Briar Bauman finally claimed his maiden Mile victory and completed his career Grand Slam. The very next day, he won his second. Bauman completed the Indianapolis double header with back-to-back wins at the Indy Mile I and Indy Mile II. Joining him on the podium both nights was teammate and fellow Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider Jared Mees. The five-time Grand National Champion took a third-place finish for the Indy Mile I and notched a runner-up slot at the Indy Mile II.

Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Yamaha rider and reigning AFT Production Twins Champion Cory Texter put up a strong fight during the Indy Mile II, landing a second place finish. American Flat Track/Scott Hunter photo

“(Getting the Grand Slam) is really cool,” Bauman said. “This place is really special. I know a lot of us were excited to come back here and race on the Indy Mile. I didn’t think I’d ever get to do it again. It’s also Indian’s 50th win in the series, so for those to go hand-and-hand means a lot to me.” Bauman started off his epic weekend with a home run swing of the checkered flag, signifying the completion of his career Grand Slam, adding a first-career AFT SuperTwins presented by Vance & Hines Mile triumph to his earlier Half-Mile, TT and Short Track wins. The following night at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and Event Center, Bauman diced it up with Mees and riders Bryan Smith and Brandon Robinson, before powering past all contenders to open a multiple bike-length lead. Mees did his best to respond on the final lap but couldn’t quite muster enough pace to reel Bauman back to within striking distance. Bauman took the checkered flag with 1.147 seconds in hand over Mees, while Smith earned Harley’s first Mile podium since the introduction of the XG750R.

“It’s pretty crazy. Honestly, I had both Jared’s and Bryan’s posters on my wall when I was growing up,” Bauman said. “I watched them every chance I could. Getting to race with them is a little bit surreal … The racing was clean and fast and the track was gnarly. All in all, it’s a dream come true.” ■

ike many sporting events this year, the inaugural Drag Specialties King of the Baggers at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca had to be postponed in July. The novel event, which is a part of the GEICO Motorcycle MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest in Monterey, California, has been rescheduled for October 23-25 and at press time was still on. A final decision was still needed whether spectators would be allowed. Either way, MotoAmerica has arranged online coverage on Live+ with highlights the following week on NBCSN’s Inside MotoAmerica. They include Ben Bostrom (Feuling), Andy Debrino (The Speed Merchant), Frankie Garcia (Roland Sands Design), Tyler O’Hara (S&S), Cory West (Slyfox), Michael Woolaway (Saddlemen) and Travis Wyman (Trask). Dunlop American Elites J.W. Speaker's Adaptive 2 Headlight in action.

From Stocked to Sold WHAT’S SELLING WELL IN 2020

T

his year has been filled with a lot of free time. With so many plans getting canceled or rolled over to 2021, a lot of riders are making the most of the extra time by indulging in the one social-distancing activity we can all get behind – putting miles on motorcycles. And when they aren’t riding, your customers are also using the extra free time to maintain and update their bikes themselves. That means dealers need to be ready to keep riders happy on the road and busy in the garage.

Michelin Commander III Touring tires

According to Drag Specialties, dealers report that tires have been especially popular this year. Keeping a variety of tire brands, styles and sizes on hand is essential so customers can get an easy tire swap and keep riding. Dunlop American Elite tires are available in 28 sizes and fit most Harley-Davidson, Victory and Indian models. There are three style options to choose from, including black sidewall, narrow white sidewall or wide white sidewall. Michelin Commander III Touring and Cruiser tires are engineered to provide improved handling, longevity and wet-weather characteristics for V-Twins, with tailored characteristics to fit each riding style.

Custom Dynamics ProBEAM LED turn signals

Metzeler has three distinct categories for its V-Twin tires, including options like the ME77 for classic builds, the Cruisetec for high-performance riding and the ME888 for high-mileage touring. Avon and Bridgestone are also popular sellers. Drag’s cumulative tire program helps dealers get the best prices while stocking a broad selection of brands, so customers can rely on their favorites being in stock. Because of countrywide shipping delays, planning ahead is more important now than ever. When it comes to DIY projects, many riders are choosing to upgrade things like suspension, lighting, seat and engine components.

Custom Dynamics gives riders a better view with simple plug-and-play installation for its LED lights, like the ProBEAM and Genesis 4 LED turn signal inserts for Baggers that add both visibility and style. For high-tech visibility there is J.W. Speaker’s innovative Adaptive 2 Headlight Series, a cutting-edge approach to exceptional visibility, especially when taking corners. These LED headlights dynamically provide ditch-toditch lighting to eliminate dark corners and provide a punch of light more than 1,500 feet down the road to give customers a more confident ride. Kuryakyn also has a range of LED products, including its new Tracer line of lights for Harley-Davidson Touring and Bagger models. The intense LED lighting is diffused with a specially-designed lens to create a lighting effect reminiscent of modern muscle cars and luxury sedans. The line includes LED Fairing Lower Grills and LED Inserts for saddlebag supports. Adding an aftermarket seat is one of the easiest but most transformative modifications a rider can make to their motorcycle. Drag Specialties, LePera Motorcycle Seats, Mustang Seats and Saddlemen all have a wide variety to fit not just every kind of riding, but every kind of rider, too. Performance mods continue to be popular for V-Twins, and many are easy enough for a weekend project in the garage with parts by brands like Bassani, Feuling Parts and S&S Cycle. Bassani has a number of highperformance exhaust products, Fueling has fuel-injection components and velocity stacks, while S&S offers everything from big-bore kits to exhausts. ■

NEWS EVENTS Cash for Customs BUILDING BIKES FOR A GOOD CAUSE

H

as your dealership been thinking about how it can support a great cause that aligns with its values? While this build was done in 2018, it’s a great example of how you can turn your and your staff’s talents into cash for those in need. Multi-award-winning Ontario bike builder and Parts Canada dealer Quinn Camp has many years of bike builds behind him. In his teens, Camp was building out custom bikes in the garage of his Toronto home, but for the last 7 years he’s operated his Welland, Ontario shop, Quinn’s Custom Motorcycles. This is where Tom Landon found Camp to commission him to custom build a bike for a cause that was close to Camp’s heart, who had lost both of his parents to cancer within a fiveyear span. Landon, executive director of the Professional Hockey Players’ Association (PHPA) asked for a custom bike that could be raffled off to raise funds for Hockey Fights Cancer, along with four other deserving charities – Heartland Forest, Hockey Canada Foundation, USA Hockey Foundation and Staal Family Foundation. For Camp, it was an easy yes.

The bike was commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the PHPA, and Camp and Landon wanted to do something big. After finding a suitable 2006 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic, all Camp had to do was look at the bike to know exactly how he wanted to customize it. The showpiece took five months to build out, and along with an 88 cubic inch engine, it featured a hydraulic lift kit, full front and rear air ride suspension, an electric centre stand, hockey stick exhaust pipes, a custom sound system and wheels, and a special 50th Anniversary emblem. In the end, the bike was a spectacular one-of-a-kind Harley-Davidson.

In the end, the custom Ultra Classic was raffled off, bringing in more than $125,000 for the select charitable organizations. This just goes to show that your dealership’s skills, a little imagination and the Parts Canada catalogs, the FatBook and the OldBook can go a long way toward helping a worthy cause. ■

Camp upped the Ultra Classic’s image with a Klock Werks windshield, a Custom Dynamic light trim, a Drag Specialties handle bar control kit and derby cover, a Kuryakyn headlight trim ring, a Performance Machine brake arm, Magnum Sterling Chromite cables and brake lines, and Arlen Ness Deep Cut shifter, shift rod floor boards and mirrors. All in, the bike’s worth topped $65,000. Landon and Camp unveiled the bike at the 50th Annual Meeting of Player Representatives in Orlando, Florida in 2018. It then went on tour to various Canadian hockey and motorcycle events, including Friday the 13th in Port Dover, Ontario and the North American International Motorcycle Supershow in Toronto, Ontario, where it won Best In Class in the Bagger category.

otal performance has taken center stage for a number of new and existing Harley-Davidson riders, and Bassani Xhaust has taken notice.

Upgrading a bike with an eye towards a clean, custom look will always be important, but right now your Harley customers have more than good looks on their mind – they want all-around performance. We’re talking big gains in how their bikes ride and the way they handle. They want a light, nimble touch at the controls, and brake and suspension systems that really deliver. Sitting at the center of all these performance upgrades is an engine that delivers, real, usable power that’s the underpinning of some seriously aggressive riding. Bassani's new Ripper exhaust system is the latest addition to its Road Rage lineup.

Riders on everything from Baggers and Softails to the venerable Dynas are jumping on the performance wagon. When it comes time to choose an exhaust system, Bassani has a solution that helps deliver that power via its Ripper exhaust lineup.

BASSANI XHAUST Long or short, Bassani's Road Rage exhaust lineup offers plenty of 2-into-1 performance for a range of Harley-Davidson models.

Those short, aggressive, pure-performance 2-into-1 Bassani Rippers are now available for Milwaukee-Eight Softails as well as the M8 and Twin Cam powered baggers. There are also Rippers for your customers on 1991 through 2017 Dynas. A big player in the performance field, Bassani has been a central figure in the growing trend. A wide of applications for the Road Rage 2-into-1 exhaust systems have been available for years. Now, with aggressive Rippers, there’s a Road Rage 2-into-1 to suit every rider’s need and aesthetic taste.

Bassani also has Special-Edition Signature Series Road Rage pipes such as the Limited Edition Anniversary Xhausts as well as some high-horsepower systems. With all this available Bassani has a Road Rage 2-into-1 to meet the need of every performance-oriented rider, and they’re all hot sellers. The Greg Lutzka Special-Edition 2-into-1, for example, has flown off the shelf from the day it was introduced. Upswept-style stainless steel, these Dyna application 2-into-1 exhausts deliver everything that free-spirited riders want and the demand for them has never slowed down.

These new extra-short 2-into-1 Ripper exhausts for the M8 Bassani offers up Road Rage 2-into-1 systems in multiple Softails – the Street Bob, the Low Rider, the Fat Bob and lengths, as well as systems in chrome, black and in TIGthe Slim models – come hot on the heels of the short-meg welded stainless steel. Bagger and Softail, terminates at the front of the rear wheel. It’s a no-nonsense performance look further emphasized by a new slash-cut end cap. All of this, of course, comes with traditional Road Rage 2-into-1 stepped-header performance. The headpipes measure 1¾-inch diameter before opening up to 17/8-inches for maximum performance. And, thanks to the extra-short muffler, a special-design baffle and the system’s one-piece design (headpipes, collector and muffler are all welded together) these pipes have a much more aggressive sound, something especially welcome on a Milwaukee-Eight bikes.

Bassani Xhaust celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019, commemorating the occasion with a series of special edition Road Rage pipes. The exhausts were hot sellers.

It’s no secret that the Milwaukee-Eight Harleys, good as they are, can be whisper quiet, a contrast to some earlier model bikes. Many of your Harley-riding customers would like to change that, and the Ripper 2-into-1 is the aggressive cure.

Big-Inch Bikes Joining this new breed of total-performance riders, are those power-hungry riders who want even more. These are the customers who are taking things to the limits with engines like that 131-cubic inch powerhouse straight from the factory. And Bassani, long known for performance, is right there with them. A Road Rage system especially for these big-inchers was developed in conjunction with Chris Rivas of V-Twin Specialties of Fresno, California, the first rider to top the 200 mph mark on a Bagger at Bonneville. These power-plus 2-into-1s are triplestepped, their equal-length headpipes starting with a 1¾-inch diameter, opening up to 2-inches and finally to 21/8-inches, before emptying into a special-design collector and 4-inch muffler. Optimized for big-inch, max performance, Bassani recommends these pipes for engines producing 140 horsepower or more. In addition to that ever-growing Road Rage 2-into-1 lineup, Bassani has plenty more for you and your hot-rod building, performance-seeking customers. Medicine for Motorcycles Keeping Engines Clean and Healthy

LIQUI MOLY Shooters are designed to get a tired bike back on the road and running great by giving the engine a muchneeded flush.

Y

our customers don’t tend to think of their motorcycles as getting sick, but when an engine gets jammed up with deposits, the term is actually quite accurate. Parts don’t perform as well, the power output can be diminished and the engine becomes less fuel efficient. In other words, the bike really is sick and tired. Luckily, LIQUI MOLY has the medicine for sick bikes. LIQUI MOLY Shooters are designed to get a tired bike back on its feet, or tires rather, by giving the engine a much-needed flush. The four Shooter styles available are all designed with motorcycles in mind. Not only are they specifically formulated for motorcycles, but they are also packaged with exactly the right amount needed for one use. That means there is no need for measuring or for storing a half-empty can on a shelf somewhere. The 4T Shooter removes deposits throughout the injection system and in the combustion chamber. Valves and spark plugs get a freshening up, and everything is better able to resist deposit formation in the future. By removing the deposits, the engine has better performance and reduced fuel consumption. LIQUI MOLY recommends using the Engine Flush Shooter during an oil change. As it runs through the oil system,

22

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

OCTOBER 2020

sludge and deposits are cleaned out as the Shooter picks up both oil-soluble and oil-insoluble residues. That clears the way for the new oil and helps increase the engine service life. Riders who want an extra dose of performance can opt for the LIQUI MOLY Speed Shooter. This formula packs a lot of advantages into one little shooter. The state-of-theart combination of agents has cleaning and protectant properties, but it also enhances acceleration by ensuring that the gas is more finely atomized. In addition to the performance boost, the Speed Shooter also results in an engine that starts easier and runs smoother. Like the Engine Flush Shooter, the MoS2 Shooter is also designed to enhance the performance of the motor oil. As the name implies, the MoS2 Shooter includes the solid lubricant MoS2, which helps to reduce friction in the motor. As a result, oil and fuel consumption are lowered. The system also runs smoother thanks to the reduced friction, and the increased protection helps prevent malfunctions. The MoS2 Shooter can be added to all available gear and motor oils, making it a great choice for every type of riding. ■

TIRES

Born in the USA

American-Made V-Twin Tires

Those American Elite V-Twin tires that your dealership stocks get their start at Dunlop’s manufacturing facility in Buffalo, New York.

E

very day, millions of pounds of raw materials arrive at Dunlop’s manufacturing facility in Buffalo, New York. All of those raw materials are necessary to produce the tires that roll out of the factory every year. Among those tires are the Dunlop American Elite line for V-Twins. For Dunlop, putting the word “American” in the name is a testament to both the history of the tire and the history of Dunlop itself. Dunlop designs, develops, and builds motorcycle tires for the North American market in the USA to best match the region’s riding styles and needs. With the American Elite, riders can put premium American-made* tires on their motorcycle. The American Elite is popular among customizers such as Roland Sands and Carey Hart partly because it’s available in 28 options—including whitewalls—so there’s a style to fit any build. And it’s the only premium aftermarket tire for V-Twins designed and manufactured in America. For Harley Davidson riders who pile on the miles, the American Elite delivers extended mileage so riders can spend more time exploring the American countryside. To provide the longevity riders want, the rear tire features Dunlop’s MT Multi-Tread™ technology. The long-wearing center compound extends tread wear and longevity, while the softer shoulders provide outstanding grip in the corners. The American Elite also provides exceptional grip in wet conditions, so riders can push through bad weather with confidence. The American Elite tires have many capabilities. In addition to longer wear, the tires also provide greater lean angle, better stability, more neutral steering characteristics and greater bump compliance. All of those things were

rigorously tested and developed on American roads, and at Dunlop’s Huntsville Proving Grounds in Alabama. The Huntsville Proving Grounds are everything a test rider needs to fine-tune a tire. There are multiple on-road and off-road courses, a wet test track and even Supercross tracks, all situated on 80-plus acres. Since 1989, Dunlop’s test riders have put in hundreds of thousands of laps there, testing everything from V-Twin tires like the American Elite to racing slicks. All of the bikes used for the testing are the exact same motorcycles consumers can purchase at their local dealerships to ensure the tire is the best possible design for those models. Once the American Elite tires are ready for production, the process is moved to the Buffalo manufacturing facility. Over the last decade, Dunlop has invested heavily in cutting-edge manufacturing equipment that enables new tire technology to go into production. Today, most of the DOT tires Dunlop sells in America are made in the Buffalo facility. ■

Ready for a Change

Oil Choices for Routine Maintenance

Bel-Ray offers three V-Twinspecific oils – Synthetic, Semi-Synthetic and Mineral. All feature Bel-Ray’s proprietary antiwear chemistry, which reduces bearing and valve train wear and keeps pistons and rings from scuffing.

S

ummer is prime riding season, which means that fall is prime maintenance season. After crosscountry rides or even just a lot of trips around town, riders can keep their engines running smoothly with Bel Ray oil. The company has three oils that are specifically formulated for air-cooled V-Twins, so riders get the right style and the right price when it’s time for an oil change. Bel-Ray manufactures all of its oils and lubricants in the USA. There are formulations for all types of powersports, because Bel-Ray knows that different engines need different products. Dealers can stock 1-liter and 4-liter bottles for customers, and keep a 55-gallon drum of shop oil on hand to get everyone ready for that fall oil change. The three V-Twin oil options available from Bel-Ray include Synthetic, Semi-Synthetic and Mineral. All of them feature Bel-Ray’s proprietary anti-wear chemistry, which reduces bearing and valve train wear and keeps pistons and rings from scuffing. Bel-Ray V-Twin Synthetic oil is the premium choice for riders who want high performance. The multi-grade 10W-50 oil has a host of traits designed to keep largedisplacement V-Twin engines running at their peak. The oil’s superior film strength helps protect the engine components, while the reduced friction decreases engine operating temperatures.

26

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

OCTOBER 2020

Those attributes help extend the life and performance of the engine, while the oil maintains exceptional shear stability that keeps the viscosity consistent. In fact, the V-Twin Synthetic oil has Bel-Ray’s highest viscosity index, which offers improved viscosity protection even in high temperatures. Cold temperatures aren’t a problem, either, and the engine will start right up with V-Twin Synthetic oil. The Bel-Ray V-Twin Semi-Synthetic oil combines the benefits of fully-synthetic oils with the lower cost of petroleum oils. This 20W-50 blend also offers a high film strength to protect the internal components of the engine while boosting oxidation resistance. A high viscosity index provides stable viscosity across a wide temperature range, and decreased friction means a cooler engine. Bel-Ray describes the V-Twin Mineral oil as “value priced,” but that does not mean that this is simply a budget oil option. The Mineral oil exceeds OEM specifications, and like the Semi-Synthetic oil, it features a high viscosity index. The 20W-50 Mineral oil is also a versatile option that can be used as engine, primary and transmission oil. Reduced evaporation loss, lower operating temperatures and minimized deposit formations are all benefits of the Mineral oil. ■

FUEL TUNERS

Fuel Control

Two Tuners for Maximum Performance The greatly enhanced Fuelpak Pro offers dyno-equipped dealers a host of new profit-building opportunities and time saving features. They’re both powerful tools, one for the consumer (Fuelpack FP3) and one for the professional (Fuelpack Pro) and deserve a close look. Aimed at the everyday rider, Fuelpak FP3 is the quick, easy way for almost anyone to get the best performance out of a Harley-Davidson, stock or modified. First, there’s that simple Bluetooth hook-up and, once connected, there’s a full library of custom tunes to choose from and flash into a bike’s ECM. All created in-house on the Vance & Hines dynos, the maps cover an expansive number of parts combinations on Harleys from 2007 to the MilwaukeeEights. Fuelpak FP3 is one powerful, all-encompassing tuning tool and downloading those pre-written maps is just the beginning. With Fuelpak FP3 customers also get direct access to many of their bike’s ECM tuning tables. Should they choose, riders can create their own personalized performance map, while VE and target air/fuel ratio tables can be analyzed and adjusted as can the acceleration enrichment settings, the decel adjustments, idle rpm, rev-limits and more. FP3 also includes an AutoTune function that uses the OE sensors. With just one or two AutoTune sessions a bike can be brought into perfect tune, the resulting map then flashed to the motorcycle. Vance & Hines developed the Fuelpak Pro for professional use, and it gives skilled techs with dynamometer access all the tools needed to quickly and accurately tune for any combination of performance parts and engine upgrades. With its wideband tuning kit, Fuelpak Pro unlocks a whole new set of tuning features, collecting four times the data with greater accuracy than possible with FP3. Full custom-mapping Fuelpak Pro sessions can be completed in as little as 15 minutes, skipping nothing.

The Fuelpak FP3 and Fuelpak Pro are easy to install. Once setup, they are operated simply via Bluetooth on a smartphone and allow your customers to unlock the capabilities of their bikes’ fuel management systems.

T

he Fuelpak FP3 and the Fuelpak Pro are consistently bestsellers for Vance & Hines. Not only are they easy to install in 2007 through 2020 Harley-Davidson models, they also allow your customers to unlock the full capabilities of their bikes’ fuel management systems. Once installed, they’re controlled via Bluetooth through a smartphone. This allows your customers who install the Fuelpak FP3 to instantly flash a range of new performance tunes right into their bikes’ ECM, or write their own maps with AutoTune.

The Fuelpak Pro allows technicians to edit target air/fuel ratio tables, analyze and adjust front and rear cylinder volumetric efficiency, adjust front and rear cylinder spark advance, manipulate performance-enrichment tables, and alter throttle-blade control tables. And, by using Step Test intervals every 250 rpm and Sweep Tests starting at 1,500 rpm, a bike can typically be brought into perfect tune with just one or two of Fuelpak Pro’s all-inclusive AutoTune sessions on the dyno. Since Fuelpak Pro doesn’t marry itself to any one bike it can be used over and over again.

And there are more pro features. With Fuelpak Pro dealers can upload and save any custom maps they’ve created to their own account on the Vance & Hines cloud-based server, editing, modifying or sharing those maps to offer remote assistance to customers. Shops can save even more tuning time by pre-creating ready-to-go maps for their most common engine builds. All this has been designed by and for professional tuners in pro shops, and it shows. Fuelpak FP3 and Fuelpak Pro are constantly updated to stay current, and they’re both fully supported by Vance & Hines reps who are live on the phones and online Monday through Friday. There’s also an Instagram Fuelpak Friday Live Q&A every week. Within the FP3 smartphone app itself there’s a full video-support section with walk-throughs of every process and feature offered. Fuelpak FP3 also has the ability to read and clear trouble codes, and can be used to custom calibrate a bike’s speedometer. Your customers can also maintain a maintenance odometer to keep track of time and mileage on their tires, brakes pads, when the last service was performed and so on. Vance & Hines keeps Fuelpak Pro equally up-to-date and there’s plenty of support available here, as well. ■

LUGGAGE

Load it Up!

Road-Tested Luggage Other kits the riders tested include the Handlebar Bag, which most guys used to hold the THRASHIN Tool Roll with bike-specific tools, and the Bottle Holster. Some riders used it to carry water bottles while one rider on a carbureted Dyna relied on the holster to haul extra fuel. Both accessories readily attach to the duffle, saddlebags, or elsewhere thanks to MOLLE strapping found throughout THRASHIN’s line of bags.

Tool Roll THRASHIN’s Mission Duffle Bag

A

sk any engineer or designer: The best way to vet a product is with real-world testing. That being the case, 12 days on the road and over 3,000 miles sounds like a decent trial for luggage, right? Well that’s exactly what THRASHIN Supply owner Lance Coury and his crew did with the company’s lineup of bags and duffles during a recent road trip from Los Angeles to Sturgis, South Dakota, for the 80th Sturgis Rally. Using a combination of THRASHIN’s Mission Duffle, Escape Saddlebags, Handlebar Bag/Pouch, and Bottle Holster, Coury and 11 other riders hauled everything they needed – including clothes, tools, and even extra gas – for an epic 12-day road trip that really proved the products’ worth. The Mission Duffle was the workhorse of the trip, as it carried all of the guys’ clothes and essentials across the country. Strapped to the bikes’ sissy bars, the duffle was secure enough to stay put during 400-mile days but easy to remove and carry into the hotel when the guys stopped for the night in spots along the way to Sturgis. Made from durable 1680-denier nylon and quality YKK zippers, the Mission Duffle measures 28 inches by 12 inches and is big enough to hold several weeks’ worth of clothes. A key feature of the Mission is the Dirty Clothes Divider (DCD), which lets your customers keep their worn, dirty clothes separate from the clean stuff. In case of crummy weather, the duffel comes with a waterproof cover that’s big enough to fit over the bag and the bike’s sissy bar and protect everything from the elements.

During the trip to Sturgis and once back home in Los Angeles, Lance and his crew were happy with the function, fit, and look of the luggage. So, whether your customers are riding across town or across the country, THRASHIN’s luggage has been proven ready for the adventure. This is Lance’s eighth road trip to Sturgis and he plans to do it many more times, both for fun and to stay on top of product testing and development. ■

» Talk with your Drag rep for details on THRASHIN’s luggage lineup, and get more information at www.thrashinsupply.com.

Escape Saddlebags

A few of Coury’s teammates were on Dynas and Softails, so they turned to THRASHIN’s Escape Saddlebags for added storage. The Escapes are large enough to handle plenty of cargo, and the Velcro throw-over yoke fits great on all size fenders. Made from the same durable nylon fabric as the Mission Duffle, the Escapes also come with a waterproof cover and MOLLE straps. 32

RIDING APPAREL

Trends and Tradition

Modern Apparel with a Classic Attitude

The Thrasher jacket features highly reflective leather panels for maximum visibility. It also features a removable hood and space for optional protective armor.

O

nce upon a time, there wasn’t much variety when it came to motorcycle apparel. V-Twin riders had it especially hard, with choices that were mostly limited to a black leather jacket or a black leather vest. And women’s gear? Not likely. Things are much better these days, and riders have more apparel choices than ever before. Yes, black leather still takes the top spot, but now there are unique styles for every body type and plenty of ways to accessorize them. One of the brands responsible for the abundance of apparel is Z1R. The company’s motto of “performance, value and protection” translates into a complete head-to-toe lineup of apparel made of premium materials offered at a great price and designed with your customers’ comfort and protection in mind. Z1R got its start back in 1995, and from day one, quality and functionality have been hallmarks of the company. We’ve even heard from one rider who toured the country over the course of 20 years, all while wearing the same Z1R jacket. That’s what happens when you have a motorcycle apparel company that is run by riders. The team at Z1R understands the importance of using top materials and construction methods. They also make comfort a top priority, making gear that a rider feels good in both on and off the bike.

OCTOBER 2020

The Z1R development team researches current style trends and the latest technology – including everevolving safety standards that increase protection for riders – to stay on the cutting edge of what’s possible. When it comes to V-Twin styling, that modern approach is blended with a respectful nod to the heritage of motorcycling and the classic looks and materials that will never go out of fashion. A quick glance at the 2020 Helmet & Apparel catalog shows that Z1R offers a full line of performance helmets and apparel for street, dirt and snow. The street apparel line is one of the most exciting aspects of Z1R’s growth right now, with new products arriving on a regular basis. Z1R apparel offers a lot of benefits to riders. The variety of styles for both men’s and women’s apparel is certainly a big factor, as is the value. One of the best things is the accurate American sizing, which takes all of the guesswork out of finding the right size. What a rider wears in street clothes will match what they wear in Z1R apparel, too. Among the new products making their debut this fall are the Frontline boot, Thrasher jacket and Solaris Scythe helmet. Add in something like the Sabot chaps and 243 gloves, and a rider really is outfitted from head to toe and ready to ride. The Frontline boot is made for looks and comfort, both on and off the bike. The premium full-grain leather chassis

is combined with a high-grip, abrasion-resistant rubber outsole. Inside the boot, reinforcements add an extra layer of stability and resistance, while the insole is designed for comfort and durability. The moisture-wicking, anti-bacterial lining makes sure that feet stay cool even on the hottest days. Riders get just the right fit with lacing that tucks neatly away to ensure no loose ends. The Thrasher jacket is a new take on the classic leather motorcycle jacket. The premium milled cowhide leather – 1.1mm-1.2mm thick for premium road resistance – is combined with highly reflective leather panels for maximum visibility. Four zippered vents let the rider decide how much airflow they want for the ride. There are other adjustment options, too, including a hood that attaches with a zipper for easy removal as well as back, shoulder and elbow pouches for optional armor. The Thrasher jacket has expanded shoulder gussets to make reaching the bars easy and comfortable, and two interior concealed carry pockets provide extra storage. The Solaris Scythe helmet tops off the list of the newest Z1R products, and it arrives communicator-ready for easy tech integration. The injection-molded polycarbonate shell sits atop a well-ventilated EPS liner. Riders who don’t want the extra airflow can easily close the chin and top intake vents. On hot days, when no amount of ventilation can prevent things from getting a little sticky inside the helmet, the moisture-wicking liner material helps keep things dryer and more comfortable. The middle of the rack’s rear section uses a laser-cut, formed steel plate for additional strength and better to hold cargo in place. Available in chrome or gloss black, each has all the docking hardware needed for installation. Cobra’s proprietary pull release mechanism allows them to be installed or removed in a matter of seconds.

Cobra also prepared detachable racks for Indian Scouts equipped with a solo seat. There is a large version 17-inches wide, and just over 13-inches front to back as well as a smaller one that is about 14-inches long by 8-inches wide. Each of the detachable racks arrives with all the docking hardware needed for installation. They are available in chrome or gloss black. This is a handy little rack that bolts to stock mounting locations on Scouts using solo seats. It provides a platform as a location to attach small bags or cargo without endangering your customers’ bike paint. With any of the racks there are plenty of places to attach bungee cords or mounting straps so customers will no longer have to scratch their bike’s fender securing cargo. Fitments include most of the new 2015 through 2020 Scouts with or without ABS, the 2016 through 2020 Scout Sixty with or without ABS, and the 2020 Scout 100th Anniversary, 2020. They will not fit the Bobber or the Bobber 20 regardless of the year. This useful bolt on rack clears the highest point on the fender by nearly an inch, and it is slightly tapered front-to back. It measures in at about 5¾-inches wide and nearly12¾-inches long.

The freeway bar for the Scout takes on an aggressive V-shape. Available in chrome or black.

T

here’s a lot of talk lately about Adventure bikes, but the team at Cobra believes that any motorcycle properly equipped is an Adventure bike. Now, Cobra has introduced a line of products for the Indian Scout that proves that point and helps make any journey easier. Cobra started by engineering a line of detachable rack and backrest options to enable Scout riders a choice of travel solutions. The most interesting of its new and expanded detachable line-up are its detachable large wrap around racks for Scouts equipped with dual seats. These wide racks wrap around the sides and back of the seat. When the rider wants to hit the road, he or she can do so because this rack provides them the opportunity to pack heavy and locate the weight of the gear over the rear tire instead of hanging off the back of the bike. The top of the rack is about level with the top of the seat and each rack has an edge that kicks up in the rear.

They will not work in combination with the solo detachable racks or the bolt-on racks. And last, and far from least, Cobra has designed a sweet freeway bar in chrome or black. It features an aggressive V-shape and a truly unique top mounting bracket. This provides an additional place to put your feet or to mount other accessories. ■

Maxima is delivering more than just convenience with each service kit. These kits come packed with proven, improved performance. All of Maxima’s oils – mineral and synthetic – have been developed using real world endurance testing, coupled with intensive laboratory development. They’ll ensure maximum performance and protection under the most severe conditions. Maxima’s high-performance formulations deliver an extremely high level of engine, clutch, and gear protection by providing excellent film thickness and surface tenacity to protect cylinder walls, bearing journals and other critical areas under the harshest conditions. The proprietary, ash-free additive packages keep engines running clean and free of gum, corrosion and deposits.

The ProFilter Premium Oil Filters included in the kits are just as good. Featuring M-Pleat technology, these filters provide a significantly larger filtration area than the OE filter, with a greater capacity to hold contaminants. They can actually extend filter life by 20 to 30 percent. Inside every ProFilter Oil Filter there’s a high-performance anti-drain back valve allowing optimum oil pressure and flow upon start-up, while on the outside a 17mm hex nut and pre-lubricated gasket allow for easy installation. To assure quality, each filter is individually leak-tested on the production line. ■

And, when it comes to audio systems, your customers want premium sound. Finding an audio setup that sounds great is only part of the equation, though. KICKER also offers coaxial speaker/amp kits that come complete with a pair of 5¼-inch speakers and twochannel amps, plus the bracket and wiring harness. This kit is available for a lot of older model years, with options for the 1998-2013 Road Glide (p/n 4405-0604) and 19962013 Electra Glide, Street Glide and Ultra Glide models (p/n 4405-0606).

KICKER’s amplifiers are also designed to minimize the impact on a bike’s charging system. The low current-draw amps are combined with high-sensitivity speakers, resulting in great sound quality that doesn’t strain a vehicle’s power system.

While all of those KICKER kits replace the front fairing speakers, KICKER also makes a 5¼-inch coaxial speaker, two-channel amp kit (p/n 4405-0607) that fits perfectly into the Tour Pack rear speaker pods on 1996-2013 models.

KICKER has a variety of complete audio kits for HarleyDavidsons. All of them are designed to fit right into the factory audio location, which means there is no need for cutting or drilling. Since the KICKER kits integrate seamlessly with the factory radio, there is no need for an aftermarket head unit, either. Each kit includes a plugand-play wiring harness to make the swap even easier.

Riders on 2014 and newer bikes with a four-speaker Tour Pack can use this audio kit, too, by adding the Tour Pack Harness (p/n 2120-1066) and one of KICKER’s fairing upgrade kits for Harleys. The harness attaches to the factory radio via a pre-cut wire, and it expands the kit to a four-speaker setup. ■

CAM KITS

Power and Torque

Cams for Big-Bore Milwaukee-Eights The dyno chart tells the tale. S&S Cycle’s new 540 cam works with the company’s big-bore kits, exhaust and air cleaner to produce stumppulling torque.

While big horsepower numbers might get all the limelight, more often than not, it’s a motorcycle’s torque that riders really feel when they’re rocketing onto a highway or threading a loaded Bagger up a mountain road. With this in mind, S&S designed the 540 cam for big-bore M8-powered Touring bikes. Horsepower junkies will delight in the boost in power the 590 cam provides to bikes built with bigbore motors of 124 inches and larger.

E

ver since Harley-Davidson launched the Milwaukee-Eight engine platform, riders everywhere have done exactly what Harley fans have done since the Motor Company first introduced its first V-Twin in 1909 – searched for more power. For the past 62 years, S&S Cycle has helped with that lust for horsepower and torque, constantly developing and evolving a growing range of products designed to deliver, pure, usable power for V-Twin riders. The Viola, Wisconsin-based company has now launched the next generation of performance cams for big-bore MilwaukeeEight engines. Designed for 124 inch and larger M8s, the 540 is a pure torque cam, while the 590 is an all-out horsepower monster. Both have seen a year of development and testing, making sure they match that “Proven Performance” motto, and, as always, they’re made in the USA.

The 540 cam works with S&S Cycle’s big-bore kits and produces buckets of stump-pulling torque down low in the rpm range, as well as respectable horsepower numbers. All required bearings, O-rings and installation hardware are included. The gear drive cam kits come with gears. S&S notes that the cam requires adjustable pushrods and heavy-duty valve springs, so check out the company’s offerings in the FatBook. For those customers requiring a taste of real power, there is the 590 cam, which is designed specifically for use with monster bores, ported heads, high rpms and churning out maximum horsepower. Not designed for stock bore engines, the 590 cam’s lift helps a big-inch motor – 124 inches and larger – breathe high into the rpm range. The kits include all the required bearings, O-rings and hardware, and, like the 540, the gear drive cam kits include the drive gears. Like with the 540 cam, S&S notes that the 590 requires adjustable pushrods and heavyduty valve springs. ■

Ready to Race

Turning a Bagger into a Performance Bike

Slyfox has teamed up with rider Cory West, who has been tapped to pilot its custom Performance Bagger at the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race in October. was also the part of the industry where he found the most passionate people. The community of Harley-Davidsons builders has become just as important to Fox as the bikes themselves. Slyfox officially kicked off at Sturgis in 2019, so the company recently celebrated its first anniversary. From the start, Slyfox has differentiated itself by focusing on performance parts, like the triple clamp and carbon fiber parts that debuted at Sturgis. Slyfox parts are all made in the USA, and they are only available through Drag Specialties.

T

The best way to show off new parts is, of course, by putting them on a bike. Fox opted to build two. The first, a custom 2019 Road Glide, made its debut at Daytona Bike Week back in March. The second bike is something completely different – a Road Glide race bike that is being prepped for the King of the Baggers race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Rider Cory West has been tapped to pilot the bike in the race. West is a longtime professional roadracer who is valued for his consistency, adaptability and, of course, his frequent podium appearances.

Fox grew up around racing, engineering and powersports, but when it came to his own career, he decided to focus on the V-Twin scene. His decision was, of course, based on the bikes he most enjoyed building and riding, but it

The race, which would have been the inaugural event for the new class hosted by Drag Specialties, was supposed to happen back in July. he Slyfox brand can be summed up in just three words – lighter, stronger, faster. As far as founder Alex Fox is concerned, a Bagger might be a great touring bike, but it’s even better as a performance bike. His goal with Slyfox is to make it easy for Bagger owners to convert their stock setups into a bike that weighs less, looks better and exceeds performance expectations.

race-specific products, which will eventually find their way to the FatBook so that customers can use them, too. The race bike is going to be a showcase for just how capable a Bagger can be when it has the right parts and tuning. The current selection of Slyfox parts will all be on the Road Glide, including the triple clamp, the Pro Series seat and the full carbon fiber collection of saddlebag lids, fenders and side covers. The carbon fiber rear fender is actually brand new to the Slyfox line. Like the other pieces in the collection, it is made from premium materials using premium manufacturing processes. The pre-impregnated carbon fiber is both mil-spec and aerospace grade to ensure a part that is lightweight yet extremely resilient. Another new Slyfox product that is making its first appearance on the race bike is a *titanium exhaust. Slyfox is teaming up with Bassani to create it, and the exhaust saves an impressive 7 pounds compared to the stock stainless steel exhaust. Based on Bassani’s Road Rage 3 exhaust system, this new Slyfox version has stainless head pipes leading into a titanium megaphone. The Slyfox upper triple clamp is another way to save weight, and the CNC-machined 6061-T6 aluminum

construction actually makes it stronger than its stock counterpart. The clamp cleans up the look of the dash area for a more streamlined style. Designed to be an OEM replacement, the triple clamp is an easy way to update the look of a Bagger without making any big modifications. Whether it’s for racing or a full day of riding, the Slyfox Pro Series seat is designed to provide the best of both worlds. Slyfox teamed up with Saddlemen for this seat, which has the lines and materials of a performance seat combined with an interior designed for premium comfort. On the outside of the Pro Series seat, standard and carbon fiber SaddleHyde has been blended with a Tri-Gripper lumbar panel, which offers plenty of grip at any lean angle. Inside, Saddlemen’s GelCore and Ultra-Foam provide the right combination of cushioning and rigidity. Co-molded GelCore provides unparalleled comfort, whether it’s for a full day on the road or just a quick trip around town. Ultra-Foam has a unique molding process that creates an element-resistant self-skinning process, sealing the foam to keep out the elements and increase the seat’s durability. ■

One of the latest from Performance Machine is its new Touring Front Wide Tire Kit for 49mm forks. It’s suitable for Harley-Davidson Touring models from 2014 to present, and allows your customers to outfit their bikes with a wide, 180mm tire for that bold, broad front-end look. DRAG DEALER PROFILE

Roaring Reputation

Sangers Cycles Delivers Service & Performance

Gannon Dvorak is just one member of the talented staff at From left: The crew at Sangers Cycles — Gannon Dvorak, Kevin Sanger, Kay Sanger and Rudy Muller. Sangers Cycles. Customers come from all over for its expertise.

T

wenty years ago the term Performance Bagger was an oxymoron as Harley-Davidson Touring models were essentially intended for casually chasing the horizon, offering rider and passenger satisfying comfort, not break-neck speeds – style and snappy performance weren’t priorities. Things have changed, and now those two words — Performance Bagger— pretty much describe the tip of the spear for today’s Harley aftermarket. Indeed, as most authorized Harley-Davidson dealerships and independent shops now realize, the smart money is in stocking plenty of top-tier performance goods for Harley Touring models. You know, for Baggers — Performance Baggers. The Performance Bagger market didn’t create itself overnight, though. It took more than a few independent shops and parts vendors with keen foresight to get us to the point where we are today. Eventually products, including state-of-the-art suspension kits, dedicated 2-into-1 exhaust systems, race-bred brake systems, and carbon fiber body parts began dominating the V-Twin aftermarket. Many of the above are found in the pages of the FatBook. Among the Performance Bagger visionaries is the husband-and-wife team of Kevin and Kay Sanger. After graduating from Motorcycle Mechanic Institute, Kevin worked for several Harley dealerships before opening his

54

own business 35 years ago, and Kay herself has more than 20 years of experience with the Harley aftermarket and service sectors. In addition to their combined 55 years of experience, Kevin and Kay are joined by two top-notch service techs, Rudy Muller and Gannon Dvorak. This is Sangers Cycles, a shop with an indoor footprint of about 5,000 square feet, sitting beneath clear-blue Rocky Mountain skies in Fort Collins, Colorado. Sangers Cycles has a reputation in the performance crowd that stretches nationwide. Some of the biggest names in V-Twin performance ware often rely on Sangers for feedback, sometimes even assistance, in developing some of the coolest components made for Harley Touring models. “When you mention Kevin Sanger to vendors like Legend Suspensions, S&S Cycle and Feuling, they know who you’re talking about,” says Jayson Specht, Drag Specialties sales rep for Sangers Cycles. More often than not, Specht adds, these and other vendors voluntarily send prototypes or new products to the Sangers crew so that they can get some field-based feedback on how they perform, coveted feedback given the shop’s platinum reputation. That reputation comes from the high standards Kevin Sanger expects from people he works with and for the bikes they send out the shop door. These are traits he’s honed over the years, going back to 1983, when he opened his first motorcycle shop in Casper, Wyoming.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

That also happens to be the year when Kevin became a Drag Specialties dealer. At the time a much younger Kevin Sanger often found himself at the local motocross tracks, where he bounced around berms and off jumps before discovering the specialized sport of flat track racing. The latter being his passion ever since, Kevin says. However, Kevin wasn’t long for Casper and its abbreviated riding season. Like any diehard biker and racer, he needed more time on two wheels. His truck loaded with his tools and wares, Kevin headed south to warmer climes. He eventually planted his flag at Fort Collins where, in 2002, he established Sangers Cycles. Some of those early days were spent developing a turbocharging system for Big Twins, but he eventually realized that the market was limited for such a narrowly focused product. However, he still recognized there was a growing demand for performance tuning those same Big Twin engines, so Sangers Cycles shifted gears. (A side note about those turbos – Kevin still rides a turbocharged Dyna, a 2010 model that puts out 132 horsepower.) “We’re known in the area for our performance tuning, but we do all sorts of other work on Harleys, too,” Kevin says. He adds that the shop’s major clientele includes Dynas, Sportsters and Baggers – a lot of Baggers. Seems that Touring bike owners from within the Denver area and from surrounding states bring their bikes to Sangers for service, repairs and modifications. Again, those customers are after Sangers’ expert reputation, a high level of service that comes courtesy of Kevin’s abilities, and those of Muller and Devrak. “I trained both of those guys, and they’re top-notch,” Kevin says. That’s not a boastful description of their relationship, either. Simply, a highly skilled and experienced mechanic took the time to polish and broaden the mechanical talents of two younger and industrious men, the result being three highly competent service technicians sharing the same work space.

Rounding out the team is Kay, the do-it-all team member who runs the parts counter and generally takes care of business at the shop’s front room. Among her duties, too, are promoting the shop name, marketing that includes sponsorship of the nearby IMI Motorsports Complex, a dirt track that feeds the Fort Collins area’s need for speed.

SANGERS CYCLES

(Left) Longtime customer Josh Doll has a look through the FatBook with Kay Sanger. (Right) Kevin Sanger and his team are well-known for their highperformance work, upgrades frequently aimed at hot-rod Baggers.

The quarter-mile oval has become a favorite hangout for Sangers Cycles’ customers, too. Their number includes some of the younger racers (think early teen years) who show up for junior-class racing. We’re talking about Sangers Cycles’ involvement with Sunday Motors, a proprietary turnkey customer flat track race bike brand for youngsters. The bike is powered by a 187cc, four-valve, single-cylinder engine that, as Kevin boasts, “really gets up and goes for its size.” Sangers sells Sunday Motors bikes as much to help grow the sport of flat track racing as for profits. The little race bike’s get-up-and-go is enough to satisfy the kids who Kevin invites to race on it for the evening. And, in the process, he’s sowing the seeds for future generations who, conceivably, might one day compete in the American Flat Track pro series, which Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited support on a national basis. Sangers Cycles even promotes its own flat track event at IMI Motorsports Complex, known as the Mile High Showdown. It’s a hooligan-based event, open to practically anybody bold enough to enter. The inaugural event was in 2019 and drew about 300 entries, a number that was expected to grow for the 2020 round, that as of press time was scheduled for August 24 should the Coronavirus pandemic not interrupt things. By sponsoring the track and promoting the Mile High Showdown, Kevin is able to feed his passion for flat track racing and spread the Sangers Cycles name among young riders and up-and-coming racers. Should one of those riders feel ‘the need for speed’ for one of their bikes, or even just regular service or aftermarket parts – whether it’s for a Performance Bagger or an everyday-commuter Dyna or Sportster – they’ll know just where to look. ■

Winter Break

Getting a Bike Ready for Storage

Dig into the FatBook and the OldBook to find Drag’s extensive range of oils, lubricants and oil filters.

W

ith riding season slowing down in many parts of the country, it’s time to get bikes prepped for their long winter hiatus. Even riders in places that offer year-round riding weather have to keep up with maintenance, and the fall months are a great time for a freshening up.

Bikes that are going to be sitting idle for a while benefit from Drag’s ethanol treatment and fuel stabilizer.

Drag Specialties has all of the items that dealers need to help their customers get ready for winter, whether that means storage or routine maintenance to keep riding on those warm winter days. Regular oil changes are a must whether a bike is going into winter storage or not. Drag has synthetic and standard oil blends, with formulas designed for specific types of Harley-Davidson engines as well as oil designed to keep high-mileage engines running strong. Drag’s spin-on oil filters are high-quality OEM replacements, while the magnetic ring oil filters pull small pieces of loose metal out of the oil.

The OptiMate 3 global battery charger can diagnose a sulfated battery condition, and its automatic hourly tests provide advance warning of any problems. It is able to recover a neglected battery that has as low as two volts of charge. The OptiMate 5 power charger rapidly charges and optimizes a battery. The multistep charge and safe low-volt pulsing recovery for accidentally-discharged flat batteries make it a versatile charger, while the weatherproof permanent battery lead and handlebar hanging hook make it ready for action.

A motorcycle cover tops everything off to keep a bike protected from the elements, or even just from collecting dust in the garage. The FatBook and OldBook have a wide variety of cover options for bikes of all sizes and styles, from customs to flat-track racers. ■

Bikes that are going to be sitting idle for a while benefit from Drag’s ethanol treatment and fuel stabilizer. This little bottle packs a big punch, not only preventing the fuel from forming gummy deposits but also cleaning the carbs and other internal engine parts along the way. It also gives spark plugs an extended life by reducing fouling and misfiring. Firing up a 12V lead-acid battery is easy when spring rolls around thanks to Drag’s OptiMate charger options. The OptiMate 1 global battery charger has the unique OptiMate maintenance program, which tests the battery and delivers only what it needs to maintain the charge. When it’s time to park a motorcycle for the season, let your customers know that the lineup of Drag Specialties/OptiMate battery chargers will keep those batteries healthy. Drag also offers a number of covers.

LED Mirrors and a Low-Profile Taillight

LED LIGHTING

Mirror, Mirror

Custom Dynamics’ new Dynamic Amber/White LED Mirrors are teardrop-style mirrors that feature forward-facing, and rider-facing bright LED lights.

W

hen it comes to motorcycle lighting, Custom Dynamics wants riders to have a lot of choices. Not only does the company offer a huge array of innovative lighting products for motorcycles, but they also offer a lot of choices about where those lights go.

The taillight assembly might be low-profile, but it has a high-profile light output. This is achieved with five horizontal LED light pipes, which provide a constant line of color rather than a row of single LED bulbs. The pipes provide the running light, and they are joined by full-contrast red brake LEDs and built-in amber auxiliary turn signals.

Turn signal, headlight and brake light replacement lights, Tour Pak lights and LED license plate frames are a few of the options available. Recently, Custom Dynamics introduced the Run and Brake LED Backrest Light and the Amber LED Front Fork Lightz. But until now, there was no dedicated light for mirrors. Custom Dynamics has actually gone one step beyond that with the new Dynamic Amber/White LED Mirrors. These teardrop-style mirrors amp up both style and visibility. The forward-facing bright white and amber LEDs sit behind a smoked lens. The white LEDs act as daytime running lights, and they automatically turn off when the amber LEDs activate in sync with the turn signal or hazard lights. Tucked into the edge of the rear-facing mirror is a bank of red LEDs, also behind a smoked lens. These can be wired to illuminate as a turn signal or brake light, if desired, but the choice is up to the rider. The mirrors are a direct OEM replacement for Harley models with a 5/16-inch mounting hole, and Custom Dynamics has mounting adaptors available for additional fitments. All of the wires are tucked inside the mounting stem to provide a clean look. Customers get a choice of a chrome or gloss black finish. Custom Dynamics has also expanded its ProBEAM line by adding the ProBEAM Integrated Low Profile LED Taillights with Auxiliary Turn Signals. This low-profile design protrudes only 2 inches from the stock taillight baseplate, providing a sleek, all-in-one upgrade compared to the stock squareback taillight.

The ProBEAM Integrated Low Profile LED Taillights with Auxiliary Turn Signals features five horizontal LED light pipes, as well as built-in amber auxiliary turn signals.

Easy plug-and-play installation is ensured, especially since the lights arrive with the necessary replacement gasket and nylon washers. The light is available with a Red or Smoked lens with an optional top or bottom license plate illumination window, though of course a style with no window is also available. Like all of the other LED products in the Custom Dynamics lineup, these two additions are covered by the Custom Dynamics Lifetime LED Warranty. ■

Every oversized bar and riser in this collection is TÜV certified, meaning they meet high-quality manufacturing standards set by the third-party Technischer Überwachungsverein (Technical Inspection Association). The Tyson XL handlebar line features four rises and two finishes, plus straight and pullback styles. The tapered, seamless 4130 chromoly handlebars boast an oversized 11/8-inch center section and 1-inch ends. Slots on the bar ends and the 1¼-inch uprights make routing control wires easy. The Murdock O/S risers are constructed with 4130 chromoly, making them strong and durable. Murdock’s one-piece investment-cast bar clamp fits 11/8-inch bars and features a slot in the bottom clamp to make routing internal wiring much easier.

Tracker O/S bar with the Murdock pullback riser

Biltwell’s 4130 chromoly Tracker O/S bars come in three heights and fit the Murdock O/S 11/8-inch risers, offering a wide selection of height and pullback combinations. Tracker OS bars are available notched for Harley’s TBW module or slotted to accept stock wiring looms and hand controls. With the controls squared away, Biltwell also has things taken care of at the rear of the bike for when your customers hit the road. The EXFIL-60 universal fitment sissy bar bag proudly showcases the company’s lessis-more aesthetic, and features everything needed for a multi-day motorcycle adventure. Per Biltwell’s bag naming convention, EXFIL-60’s main compartment holds 60 12-ounce cans. Additional zippered compartments on the main chassis and fold-down storage flap hold smart phones, a tablet, maps or snacks. The entire bag is constructed with UV-treated 1680-denier polyester nylon for durability and includes MOLLE attachment points for accessories. That fold-down flap is adjustable and works for stowing a bedroll and extra gear. Loading and carrying the bag is easy thanks to five 1½-inch-wide woven cinch straps with reflective piping and a removable padded shoulder strap. ■

More Sizes, Styles and Finishes

W

hen it comes to CycleSmiths’ Banana Board floorboards, there are several styles of these good looking and versatile custom floorboards, all designed for high levels of comfort and control. The lineup includes standard 14-inch and 19-inch sizes, and now a 21-inch extended length version. The latter two allow for multiple riding positions, whether with mid-controls or forward controls. Those 21-inch models feature a nose angle that matches the factory engine guards on Harley-Davidson Touring bikes. All are trademark-bowed and machined from billet. Each of the Banana Boards sizes are offered with chrome trim, in gloss black powdercoat or with a new gold finish. They come with or without brightly finished rivets to accent the edge-tucked replaceable rubber inserts. They come with mounting brackets that allow for many levels of adjustability, providing more ground clearance than OE for steeper lean angles. Each of them can be matched with Banana Board style shifter pegs, foot pegs and brake pedal covers. There are applications for most Harley-Davidson Touring models from 1998 through the 2020 bikes, and for the 2009 through 2013 FL Trikes. There are also fitments for the 2012 through 2016 FLDs originally equipped with floorboards and for the newest M8 Softails, 2018 and up.

PARTS & ACCESSORIES

Big Bananas

CycleSmiths’ 21-inch Banana Board footboards are available with or without brightly finished rivets, and provide plenty of ground clearance and adjustability.

“Our focus has always been to develop accessories that function as well as they look,” says CycleSmiths’ Doug Clarkson, This is surely true with those Banana Boards and it’s true for another product you’ll want to take a look at, the CycleSmiths Billet Saddlebag Extensions. Easily installed on any Harley model with OE hard saddlebags, these lower-extensions are machined aluminum. They’re available chrome-plated, in black powdercoat, in black with highlighted machined grooves, or gold anodized. There are both 4-inch and 5-inch sizes, and the extensions can be had with or without cutouts for dual exhausts. There are extra-wide versions, too, for bikes using mufflers up to 6-inches in diameter. Applications for all this cover Harley FLH and FLT Touring models from 1999 on. ■

Premium Trim Kits for Harley-Davidsons

M

etra Electronics began as a small operation making CB-radio mounts for the taxi industry in New York in the 1940s. It’s since grown into a pre-eminent 12-volt electronics specialist.

While Metra’s focus for many of the past decades was on automotive products, the company has now expanded into powersports, where it’s crafting trim kits, wiring harnesses and luggage lids for your customers’ HarleyDavidsons under the Saddle Tramp brand name. Utilizing more than 70 years of experience, and leveraging a massive R&D and manufacturing facility in Daytona Beach, Florida, Saddle Tramp is now making a range of products for upgrading a Harley’s OE sound system. These kits allow riders of 1998 through 2013 Harley Touring models, as well as Rushmore riders, to swap out their OE radios and add speakers to their saddlebags and top box lids with minimal fuss and a totally factory look. With Saddle Tramp’s cockpit trim panels, your customers can upgrade their stereo head units to the latest equipment and utilize one-piece molded components. Quality rubber gaskets, durable brackets and other details ensure the products install easily and work reliably for years to come. Other products like amp brackets, speaker pods and wiring harnesses help riders customize or expand their stereo systems with ease. At the back of the bike, Saddle Tramp’s saddlebag and Tour Pak lids look stock and are ready to accept your customers’ 6x9 speakers of choice. “If you see our products we haven’t done our job” is a Metra motto. While many companies want their products to stand out, Saddle Tramp focuses on meeting or exceeding OE fit and finish so that their cockpit trim panels and luggage lids look like they were on the bikes when they rolled out of Milwaukee.

Metra uses the latest injection-molding techniques, dedicates extra time to hand-finishing and inspecting the parts, and paints them in colors pulled right from the Harley catalog. Dash trim panels come in scratch-resistant matte black to match OEM finishes, while luggage lids are shipped in Vivid Black. The pre-painted luggage lids look great as is, but are ready to be prepped and painted in any color your customer wishes. “The installer’s choice” is Metra’s other slogan, and it stems from the rave reviews Metra’s many products receive from the professionals that use them the most. Your shop techs will appreciate the thought, detail and quality construction that goes into Metra’s accessories. Beginning with the design and moving on through the molding and even the painting, all processes are conducted in-house at Metra’s headquarters. ■

Oversize Rotors for Harleys

J

ust because course a bike’s braking system has to be functional, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be boring. Galfer USA knows that Harley-Davidson owners like to combine form with function, which is exactly what Galfer did with its oversize Wave® front brake rotors. The design of the oversize Wave rotor accomplishes a lot of things. First and foremost, it provides a significant braking upgrade over the stock setup. There is more surface area for the brake pads to bite into to improve braking power, and the larger rotors combined with Galfer’s proprietary Wave design efficiently dissipate heat to keep braking consistent. These full-floating rotors might be bigger than stock, which requires a caliper relocation bracket, but they still bolt on using the stock hub pattern. The high-carbon 420 stainless steel is laser-cut and double-disc parallel ground, which results in perfect flatness. The rotors are heat-treated for each specific application. There are, of course, Galfer brake pads that pair perfectly with the oversize rotors.

Galfer’s oversize Wave rotors not only add an upgrade over the stock brake setup, they also lend some style points thanks to their attractive design.

Galfer offers Harley owners several different options when it comes to the oversize Wave rotors. The DF680CWS series includes 12½-inch and 13-inch rotors with a wide friction band. Both sizes are available with a standard black carrier or a contrast-cut carrier for an additional style element. Galfer also offers the DF680CWSX rotor, a 13-inch option with a narrow friction band. Galfer USA develops and assembles its Harley brake rotors at its headquarters in Carson City, Nevada. The carriers and buttons for the Wave brake rotors for V-Twin applications are made in the USA, too. ■

Family Tradition

Handcrafted Seats with a History

or many families, traditions are rather typical, revolving around things like holidays and favorite vacation spots. For the LePeras, it’s a family tradition to create high-quality, handcrafted seats for Harley-Davidsons. LePera Motorcycle Seats was founded by Bob LePera, Sr. in 1972. Today, the company is in the capable hands of the next generation. Bob LePera Jr. has been the lead designer since the early 1990s, and Christine LePera handles management, including sales, the dealer network and distribution. The siblings continue the tradition of making the seats at the company’s home in North Hollywood, California. LePera Motorcycle Seats values traditional craftsmanship for both old-school and cutting-edge styles. Seats that were originally designed by Bob Sr. in the 1970s, like the Cherokee, Baron and Signature Series, are still available along with Bob, Jr.-designed top-sellers like the Bare Bones, Maverick, KickFlip and TailWhip. Each handmade seat starts life in North Hollywood as a steel base plate, rather than fiberglass or plastic.

LePera Motorcycle Seats was founded by Bob LePera, Sr. in 1972. Today, his children Bob LePera Jr. and Christine LePera oversee the company’s commitment to traditional craftsmanship, as well as new cutting-edge styles.

Perfectly-poured Marathon foam is added, followed by a high-quality, hand-sewn cover. The powder-coated steel base plate ensures a perfect fit on the bike, and its natural dampening characteristics add comfort. The mounting brackets are MIG welded or held in place with Allen bolts threaded into spot-welded nuts – both styles look clean and provide a precise fit. The bottom of each base plate is carpeted to protect the bike frame. Inside the seats, LePera’s specially poured and formulated high-density Marathon molded foam provides the unique shape of each design and ensures plenty of comfort. ■

New Fitments for Twin Cams

T

here are now fitments of KB Performance Pistons Super Duty series for Twin Cam engines, including those with 85cc Bathtub or 95cc Tear Drop combustion chambers.

Super Duty series dome fits both Bathtub (left) 85cc heads and on Tear Drop 95cc heads (right).

New KB Super Duty pistons have a dome shape to work with those two style heads, the applications include 103-, 110- and 113-inch factory engines, and big-bore options up to 117˝. KB’s Super Duty piston also fits Harley-Davidson’s optional MVA and CVO 95cc heads.

The Super Duty pistons feature KB’s proprietary Line2Line skirt coating to improve sealing, reduce mechanical noise and prolong piston skirt life. This abradable polymerbased material lightly hones piston skirt clearance during initial break-in, resulting in a permanent and ideal oil-film thickness. Should the piston expand further due to excessive heat, the coating will again burnish against the cylinder wall to safely maintain clearance to prevent further scuffing. KB measures each skirt bore before the pistons are coated, and the dimension is then laser etched beneath

the piston crown for reference by a machinist who adds .0025 inch to the cylinder bore dimension for the final fit. To counter heat build-up, KB gives the piston crown and top ring groove a Type 3 hard anodizing treatment to deflect heat from the piston crown, plus to prevent micro welding on the top ring. Super Duty forged-aluminum pistons are supplied with a top ring made of steel with a nitride coating, a ductile second ring with a Napier design, and a high-tension 3.00mm oil-ring pack that is thicker than stock for better oil control and lubrication. Upgraded wrist pins have increased wall thickness, and each kit includes spiral locks. ■

High-Flow Solutions

Parts for Increased Engine Oiling Feuling’s High Flow camplates and oil pumps are a great upgrade over the OE setup. Not only are they stronger, they also offer a significant boost in oil flow and volume, and a drop in operating temperatures.

I

ncluding an upgraded camplate and oil pump in any Harley-Davidson cam swap is a smart move. It’s smart even if the cams aren’t being upgraded, especially true when that camplate and oil pump are the High Flow upgrades coming from Feuling Parts. These two offer a lot all on their own.

Feuling has custom machined the High Flow pumps and camplates from 7075 billet aluminum, a material that makes them 50 percent harder and stronger than the stock units. Feuling has also enlarged all of the reservoirs and critical oil passages, and precision matched the oil ports and cross-drillings to the portholes in the engine case. Oil flow and volume throughout the engine, to the pinion shaft, crankshaft and connecting rod, to the lifters, piston-cooling jets and more is all increased by 68 percent over stock. Oil scavenge volume, especially critical in Milwaukee-Eight applications, gets a 42 percent boost, and oil and engine temperatures can drop by up to 25 degrees. Engine longevity and performance both get a boost from what these parts deliver, and engines run smoother and quieter, too. There’s more. The 7075 billet aluminum used for the pump and camplate doesn’t flex, and holds tighter tolerances under temperature fluctuations. It also has special bearing-like properties, thus eliminating the need for bronze bushings. Feuling has also added cam-journal oil grooves for cold start-up protection, and there are added oil pressure feed holes to prevent thrust wear. Everything is pressure tested and the relief valves are pre-set. All of this is a direct bolt-in replacement for stock with applications for Twin Cams from 1999 through 2017 and both versions of the Milwaukee-Eight, oil-cooled and water-cooled. ■
