Still Crazy by D on Em de

While the country and world still have some work to do dealing with Covid-19, many things have, or are in progress of getting back to normal. The Sturgis Rally that just ended is one good example with over a half-million riders coming to the Black Hills in early August, up over 13% from 2020. Drag Specialties was back at its familiar “Rally Home” at Black Hills Harley-Davidson in Rapid City along with many top vendors, and business was brisk. Be sure to check out our Sturgis Rally Report starting on page 44. Racing never went away, but another growing segment of the sport this year was Performance Baggers, a category created in 2020 with the inaugural Drag Specialties “King of the Baggers” race at Laguna Seca. MotoAmerica, the country’s premier roadrace sanctioning body, upped the schedule to three events this year that were all nationally televised. In addition to staying involved with MotoAmerica, Drag Specialties also backed Rob Buydos with his creation of the premier event of the Bagger Racing League at Salt Lake City. See our report of that event starting on page 22. Saddlemen, one of the Drag vendors heavily supporting the new Bagger racing movement, is featured in this issue with a non-racing cover story. We all know that “personalizing” a motorcycle is one of the driving forces of our business, and Saddlemen’s custom seat program seems to me to be personalizing at its best. And it’s available through Drag Specialties. You can read about it starting on page 18.

B

ack in the mid-1970s, singer Paul Simon recorded “Still Crazy After All These Years,” the lyrics reflecting his current situation at the time compared to how things used to be. I don’t know about you, but these days I can relate to Simon’s message when I finally get back to something that has been on hold thru this ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

Last, but not least, two years ago we reported here in Drag Specialties Magazine that Carey Hart had signed on as Drag’s Brand Ambassador. I can’t think of anyone better who fits the image of being still crazy after all these years. In this issue, we caught up with the man who used to be in high demand for his ability to do a full 360-degree backflip on a motorcycle. These days, Carey usually has both wheels on the ground and is enjoying life with his family, while also building and riding his custom cruisers. Our update story starts on page 34. ■

NEWS EVENTS New Motorcycle Sales Up by Double Digits

N

ew-model motorcycle sales among leading brands increased 15.2 percent through the second quarter of 2021, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council Retail Sales Report. The year-to-date sales figures, compared to the same period last year, jumped by double digits in the on-highway and dual-purpose categories, and scooter sales were up, too. Only off-highway sales dipped slightly through Q2, by just 3.2 percent – and that was compared to a phenomenal first half of 2020 that saw off-highway sales rocket up by 50.3 percent, among leading brands, compared to the previous year. Year-to-date sales of on-highway motorcycles were up the most, by 25.2 percent. The dual category was up 16.7 percent. Scooter sales rose 8.3 percent. “We’re seeing strong performance in motorcycle sales,” said Erik Pritchard, MIC president and CEO. “Through the second quarter of 2021, the increases with streetlegal motorcycles – on-highway motorcycles, dual-purpose bikes, and scooters – demonstrates continued interest in our products and the lifestyle. Our industry continues to work hard at keeping up with strong consumer demand amid supply chain pressures.” ■

rogressive American Flat Track legend and Indian/Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited rider Jared Mees was at his crushing best at the Mission Foods New York Short Track II in August in Weedsport, New York.

With line choice on the slick Weedsport Speedway surface very much in question for the bulk of the field ahead of the Main Event, Mees rode decisively. The multi-time Grand National Champion went to the high line from the start and made it work to his advantage for the win. ■

Bauman Wins Port Royal Half-Mile

Indian/Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited rider and reigning SuperTwins champion Briar Bauman nailed the 19th win of his career with his victory at the Port Royal Half-Mile. Scott Hunter/American Flat Track photo

R

eigning Mission SuperTwins Champion and Indian/Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited rider Briar Bauman denied Brandon Price a first-career Progressive American Flat Track victory in a spectacular inaugural Port Royal Half-Mile on July 24th at Port Royal Speedway in Pennsylvania. In the Main Event, Price worked his way up from outside the top five and into the lead with apparent ease, grabbing the lead just 90 seconds into the contest. It took the remaining 8 ½ minutes for Bauman to reel him back in, frequently employing a very wide line that provided the requisite momentum when it came time for the decisive strike. That ‘strike’ was actually ‘strikes’ as Bauman threw in a pair of hard passes over the race’s final two laps to put Price behind him and keep him there to the checkered flag. It was the 19th win of his career. “I love this stuff. I love this state, and I love these types of tracks. It was kind of a bummer that I struggled for so long (throughout the day), but I don’t really get that fired up until the Main Event,” Bauman said. “I was happy to get fired up when it counted and make that one count.” ■

roken elbow, be damned. Kyle Wyman is the 2021 MotoAmerica Mission King of the Baggers Champion. Wyman did what was needed to do to earn the title on his factory Harley-Davidson Road Glide as the three-round series culminated on a sunny day back in July at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Wyman started from the pole and was never headed in the eight-lap race. He gained more than a full second on second-place finisher and Mission Foods S&S Cycle Indian rider Tyler O’Hara on almost every lap of the race until he decided to slow his pace just a bit towards the end. At the checkers, he took the win by just under four-and-a-half seconds over O’Hara. Third place went to DTF Performance/Hoban Brothers Performance Racing HarleyDavidson’s Michael Barnes. Wyman, who had broken his elbow in a crash in June at Road America, made a major recovery from his injury before mounting up for the final round. ■

CUSTOM SEATS MADE EASY

R

iders deserve a motorcycle that stands out, and customizing a V-Twin shouldn’t be difficult or expensive. That is the basic philosophy at the heart of Saddlemen’s custom seat program, available exclusively through Drag dealers. Swapping out a seat is one of the easiest ways to change the look of a bike, and swapping a boring, stock seat for one that has been fully customized has even more of a visual impact. Whether it’s just a stitch color or an embroidered logo, Saddlemen makes it easy for riders to have a unique bike in a sea of lookalikes. And, it’s not just easy for the customer, but for the dealer, too.

Saddlemen has an order form for nearly every single seat style produced by the company. Schlueter notes, though, that the Road Sofa and Step Up are the two most popular seats for customizing. The Road Sofa is a favorite among Touring riders who want a way to stand out from the crowd without sacrificing comfort. Younger riders tend to ABOVE AND HERE: Saddlemen’s custom seat program is available exclusively through Drag Specialties dealers. Your customers have a wide range of options for creating a truly custom look to their bikes.

Saddlemen Vice President Rob Schlueter reports that the company’s custom seat program continues to grow in popularity thanks to its simplicity and the ability to give customers exactly what they want. At its core, the Saddlemen custom seat program is just a matter of filling out a form. A dealer chooses the form for the seat style being customized, fills it out and submits it to Drag Specialties like any other order. It’s that simple. From there, Drag passes the requested seat on to Saddlemen, who works with the dealer to provide a price before building the seat and shipping it directly to the dealer.

SADDLEMEN

Much like that Saddlemen logo on this seat, your customers can get their own artwork embroidered on their seats thanks to the company’s custom seat program. This is a great feature for clubs or dealerships who want to add a very personal touch to a seat.

In addition to the custom seat program, Saddlemen also makes swatches of materials available to dealers to show the options, and provides training and a full support staff.

gravitate toward the Step Up. The seat’s edgy styling pairs well with the highly creative customization style coming from that segment of the V-Twin market. When a dealer fills out a custom seat form for the Road Sofa, for example, a diagram clearly notes where customers can add a personal touch. They can choose from one of four materials for both the chassis and accent panels. In addition to the standard black and brown Whisper material, there is a Carbon Fiber option as well as the freestyle-inspired Tri-Gripper. For thread, there are 13 color options for the lattice stitching, top stitching and even the Saddlemen logo stitching. On top of that, Saddlemen also offers custom embroidery. Customers just submit the artwork, and Saddlemen will add it to the seat. The embroidery option is great for clubs whose members want to add a logo to their seats as well as riders who have a custom piece of artwork. Dealers who are building a custom bike can also take advantage of the embroidery – by adding a dealer logo to the seat, everyone who checks out the bike will know where it came from. The Saddlemen custom seat program is easy, but just in case, Saddlemen has a full support staff on hand, ready to help dealers with training, order status updates or any other questions about products or the program.

Getting the word out about the custom seat program is as easy as mentioning it to a customer who comes in looking for a new seat. Dealers can also get swatches of the available finishes to show customers the options. Of course, having a custom seat already on display as an example helps generate excitement about the possibilities, too. A lot of riders have multiple seats for one bike, especially when it comes to owning a show seat that doesn’t get put through the rigors of everyday riding. One of the most popular show-bike seat colors these days is white. Schlueter says it’s always amazing to see what customers can create when given the opportunity. It appears that some customers really like simple color accents, while others will go all-out to match their bike’s paint theme with bold colors and unique material combinations. As with every Saddlemen seat, comfort is just as important as style, which is why they all begin with a GelCore foundation. SaddleGel is a proprietary gel formulation that reduces pressure and increases comfort for the rider. It is combined with layers of progressive density foam to create the ideal level of cushioning and support. ■

Big Bike Throwdown BRL SHINES LIGHT ON FUTURE OF BAGGER RACING

M

ichael Barnes not only won the Custom Dynamics Bagger GP – the Drag Specialties Bagger Racing League’s main event at the Utah Motorsports Campus in June – he also warrants the title “Holeshot King” thanks to a picture-perfect start for the 8-lap main event. When the green flag fell, Barnes made a perfect launch aboard his Hoban Brothers/DTF Performance Harley-Davidson Road Glide to lead the pack into LePera Turn One. On the other hand, second-fastest qualifier Tyler O’Hara wasn’t as successful in keeping his S&S Cycle Indian Challenger’s front tire on the pavement. The resulting wheelie kept him in second place behind Barnes, and the duo held that formation the duration of the race; O’Hara followed the 2016 Daytona 200 champion by less than a second across the finish line. Did their one-two parade make for a dull race? Hardly, because the slightest twitch of the throttle could have sent Barnes off line, easily handing O’Hara the lead, and win. That’s how close and precise the racing was when deciding who would be majordomo in the BRL’s Battle of the Baggers showdown. No doubt, the BRL’s inaugural four-race weekend was a highwater mark for every team entry. Simply, this racing is open to practically all American V-Twin models available to the public, giving Drag Specialties dealers large and small an equal chance to compete and be recognized for their efforts. Case in point – longtime Drag Specialties dealer Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson’s two big wins of the weekend.

This sweet HarleyDavidson Road Glide Special is a collaboration bike build between Saddlemen and Slyfox, which supplied the carbon fiber body work. Corey West rode #9 to a third-place finish in the premier class.

As BRL’s founder and owner, Rob Buydos, once said, “The BRL, with its various classes, makes it possible for all Drag Specialties dealers to have the opportunity to race. All the performance parts and equipment for making a competitive bike can be found in the FatBook. How easy is that?” Pretty easy, and earlier in the day Benny Carlson enjoyed back-to-back wins, first taking the inaugural Metzeler Pro Stock Bagger GP race aboard his Slyfox/Suburban Motors Harley Road Glide, with Oleg Pianykh on his Performance Machine Road Glide second followed by Logan “Wheelie Pig” Lackey aboard the Iron Steed Road Glide. After his Pro Stock win, Carlson piloted the Suburban Motors XR1200R Sportster to the Icon Hooligan GP win. He was joined in Lucas Oil Victory Lane by Alfonso “Fonz” Vasquez (second on the Speed Merchant Sportster) and Greg Stinnett (third on a highly modified Sportster Nightster).

LEFT: Saddlemen crew chief and race bike designer Michael “Woolie” Woolaway received a unique tool box as part of the Drag Specialties Mechanic of the Event award. BELOW: The inaugural BRL weekend didn’t just include racing, but was a celebration of all-things V-Twin. Crowds piled around the Bassani Stunt Show for all the tire-smoking, wheelie-popping action.

The memory of the late, great Drag Specialties National Sales Manager Jim Matchette was everywhere at the BRL, including this special message on the #86 turbo-charged Harley built by Trask Performance.

In the NAMZ Big Twins Class, #33 Roland Sands Design/Indian rider Rennie Scaysbrook on his way to victory, leading #48 Sean Ungvarsky on the Kruei Originals FXLR and #12 Anthony “Shreds” Sollima on the Quaid Harley-Davidson.

The largest entry field was found in the NAMZ Big Twin race. When the smoke cleared Rennie Scaysbrook and his Roland Sands Indian Chief came out the winner, leading Sean Ungvarsky on the Kruei Originals FXLR and Anthony “Shreds” Sollima on the Quaid Harley-Davidson entry to finish second and third respectively.

BUILDING BETTER BAGGERS

The weekend brought more than good racing by competitors. In between races, spectators were entertained by the hardcore stunt riding antics of Jason Pullen and the Bassani Stunt Show in the Kicker Arena. Equally dazzling were the bikes statically displayed at the Arlen Ness Custom Bike Show elsewhere in the paddock area. But most of all, the weekend was all about improving the performance level of those converted Bagger and V-Twin race bikes. Perhaps Barnes summed it up best during his post-win statements: “For this race we had a different front end, different shocks, different geometry (from previous races). We made some smart decisions, and they have all made the bike better,” said Barnes in a post-win statement. “That’s a testament to the knowledge of this team. “Setting up a Road Glide for road racing has been a steep learning curve, not just for me riding it, but (for) everyone

involved. We’ve made leaps and bounds at every test and every event, so after disappointing results earlier this season it’s a great reward to get this win.” No doubt, much progress in Performance Bagger technology has been gained since the first Bagger championship race last year at WeatherTech Laguna Seca Raceway. As Buydos put it, “The aftermarket is the one that brought them (Bagger race bikes) to a whole new level.” In short, a select group of Drag Specialties vendors such as Bassani Xhaust, Feuling Racing, S&S Cycle, Saddlemen, Slyfox, and Speed Merchants have used the series to not only improve their existing product line, but to design and engineer allnew parts and components that will most certainly feed the craving of the Performance Bagger community. With those companies hard at work developing an everexpanding lineup of go-fast products for speed, performance and handling, and the range of professional riders ready put them to the test on the track, the bar is definitely being raised for this growing market segment. Judging by what took place at the Utah Motorsports Campus this past summer, the future certainly looks bright for Bagger racing, the performance Bagger market and the American V-Twin community in general.

2022 FS Cup: Harley vs. Indian

T

he vaunted V-Twin rivalry between America’s two largest motorcycle brands should certainly heat up during the 2022 BRL racing season with the formation of an all-new class, the FS Cup. Entries for the FS Cup are limited to Indian Motorcycle’s popular FTR1200 and Harley-Davidson’s all-new Sportster S. In effect the BRL is placing both brands into the same arena for a winner-take-all brawl. BRL’s Rob Buydos, who created the BRL and serves as its primary spokesman, feels that the two bikes are a natural matchup on the racetrack. BRL intends to have the new class rules finalized by the time this issue of Drag Specialties magazine reaches Drag dealers, and expect a bevy of high-performance

After a 25-year hiatus from racing Drag Specialties sales rep #101 Joe Sanderson returned to the racetrack aboard a Sportster XR1200R in the Bagger Racing League’s Icon Hooligan GP class. He’ll be back for the next event with that XR punched up a bit, and a new Harley-Davidson Sportster S for the FS Cup class.

Rep Goes Racing DRAG SPECIALTIES’ JOE SANDERSON

T

he plan was simple. Step 1: Buy a used race bike, prep it for the track, ship it to the track, and then race it. Step 2: Pack the family – wife and three daughters, ages 12, 14 and 16 – into the car for a two-week tour of the Western States, stopping at such landmarks as Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. Oh, and of course, there’s the three-day layover at Utah Motorsports Campus to put that resurrected Sportster XR1200R back onto the track for the BRL’s Icon Hooligan GP race. Thus was the beginning of Drag Specialties’ sales rep #101, Joe Sanderson, and his Post-Lockdown Family Vacation. One more thing worth mentioning, the BRL race would be the first time Joe competed in 25 years, his last WERA race taking place during the previous millennium. “When I heard about the (BRL) race, I thought it’d be cool to do that — to race,” Sanderson said. So, thanks to a connection through fellow Drag rep Bob Dell, he located

and bought an XR1200R from an upstate New York dealer. The bike previously competed in the XR1200R spec class series sponsored by Vance & Hines nearly 10 years ago, so it sported a stock engine, which, Joe pointed out, “meant that it was slow on the straights.” But the bike was fast enough to propel Joe to a creditable sixth place in the Icon Hooligan GP race, a testament to both bike and rider. Joe, with the help of Drag Specialties dealer Jack Davis, owner of Straight Shooter Custom Cycles in Mogadore, Ohio, intends to pack the XR’s stock engine with more beans for the coming season. Joe is also in line to purchase a 2022 Sportster S for the new FS Cup class that BRL has lined up. As for his racing number, the only one he’d accept was 101, his Drag Specialties rep number. As for Joe’s vacation? “The girls (all four of them) had a great time, and I got to race,” he said. What more, other than more horsepower, could a man hooked on racing ask for?

aftermarket components to appear as the racing season unfolds for 2022. BRL is also making a few changes to what was formerly the Hooligan GP class. The revised class, now known as Lightweight Twins GP, will be open to the same basic category of Big Twin models that competed at the Utah Motorsports Campus last summer. The goal is to draw a wide assortment of privateer and local dealer entries into the racing, in effect offering a grassroots level of competition for everybody. In addition to more racing, the net result should be even better racing for 2022 and beyond. Once the 2022 BRL calendar is finalized, each threeday event will include Bagger GP, Pro Stock Bagger GP, Big Twin GP, Lightweight GP and FS Cup.

Saddlemen’s Indian Challenger rider Patricia Fernandez is no stranger to motorcycle racing. Her early years of road racing include numerous Super Sport events in the US, as well as “real road races” in the British Isles.

BRL Rider Patricia Fernandez

T

raditionally motorcycle racing is, for the most part, a man’s sport. Race paddocks around the world are typically populated with male racers; rarely do you see a female rider in the mix.

Not so at a BRL event where you’ll find Patricia Fernandez riding an Indian Challenger that flies Saddlemen’s team colors in the Bagger GP class. You won’t have to look long or hard for her, either. This young lady is a dynamo, full of spunk and positive energy; expect a huge smile on her face, too. Fernandez’s crew chief Mike “Woolie” Woolaway describes her as “really tough – she’s got grit.” Indeed. And Fernandez is no stranger to motorcycle racing. Her early years of road racing included numerous Super Sport events in America. Later she ventured to the British Isles to compete in what are termed “real road races,” events held on public roads. Among the most famous real road race is Northern Ireland’s fabled North West 200. After returning to America, Fernandez caught wind of BRL’s Bagger class. The more she heard about it, the more intrigued she became until finally the crew at Saddlemen suggested Fernandez put in a few laps aboard their team bike during the Chuckwalla open track day last winter. She agreed to try it, but told Woolie and the others that she was only interested in getting a feel for the bike, so no lap times, please.

Of course, racers being racers, Woolie and the crew clicked on the stop watch as Fernandez completed her first flying lap (without telling her that they would do so), and left the timer on for the duration. As Fernandez summed it up in an interview after those hot laps, “My first lap was 2:10. My second lap was 2:09, 2:08 – every lap was just dropping.” When she returned to the pits – still unaware that Woolie had put a stopwatch on her – she volunteered, “I think I can ride one of these.” To which Woolie’s crew added, “Ohhhh, you’re riding one all right,” and that led to her competing at the Utah race where she ended the day with a creditable seventh place. Her teammate (and partner) Cory West finished third aboard the Slyfox Performance/Saddlemen Harley-Davidson Road Glide. Saddlemen intends to build on its success in the Bagger GP class for coming BRL races, retaining the same rider/bike combinations used at Utah Motorsports Campus. When you think about it, the Saddlemen duo represents a truly a diverse team. One rider is female, the other male; one rides a Harley, the other an Indian, both in the Bagger GP class. Above all, both combinations offer exciting additions to a growing form of American road racing. ■

50-State Air Intake Kits intake systems. And, most importantly, this EO means that customers can order Vance & Hines VO2 air intake systems direct from Drag Specialties dealers. This EO received by Vance & Hines (CARB EO #D632-4) covers VO2 air intake systems for Milwaukee-Eight, Sportster and Twin Cam motorcycles from model year 2007 through 2021.

Vance & Hines’ popular VO2 air intake kits are now available for California riders, making them 50-state emissions compliant. The VO2 X is one of the ultra-premium models in the range.

irst the big news – Vance & Hines’ popular VO2 air intake kits are now available for sale in California. Now for the details.

As most dealers know, from the very beginning Vance & Hines’ popular VO2 air intake systems have been made in the USA. To be more precise, every VO2 system has been, and still is, made in Vance & Hines’ hometown of Santa Fe Springs, California. It’s been that way ever since the VO2 system was first displayed and sold at the Black Hills Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, 16 years ago.

With the granting of this EO, the Vance & Hines VO2 air intake line-up can now be considered 50-state emissions compliant. The current line-up includes a wide range of designs like the Naked, Cage Fighter, X, Blade and Rogue models. All VO2 systems use washable high-flow filter elements developed and dyno tested by the Vance & Hines R&D team. All internal components and mounting hardware are included with every kit.

For those going for the low-key or sleeper look, the VO2 Naked is a great choice. It includes all the high-flow components to turn a bike’s factory air cleaner into a performance unit, while retaining the use of the original OE Harley-Davidson air cleaner cover, or one of the covers in the Vance & Hines Skullcap cover accessory line.

Ironically, it’s the very same state of California that has some of the toughest restrictions on the sale of certain kinds of aftermarket parts via CARB (California Air Resources Board). One of those categories of aftermarket parts are air intake kits, and unless they go through an extensive evaluation process and are granted an Executive Order (EO) by CARB, they cannot be sold for street motorcycles in the state of California. That’s all changed, and after going through an extensive review process and emissions testing on a variety of Harley-Davidson motorcycles at independent testing labs in Southern California, CARB has granted an EO for the Vance & Hines line-up of VO2 air

From there, we move up to the ultra-premium line of VO2 air intakes, the Rogue, X, and Blade, each featuring gorgeous CNC machined billet aluminum covers and stand-offs serving to securely assemble air intake assembly to the induction module. They use race spec ARP 12-point stainless bolts, the very same hardware used by all of the top NHRA drag race teams to hold together the highest horsepower engines found in any form of racing. The VO2 Rogue was the first in this line-up of premium billet machined kits, and its popularity only continues to grow. The smooth sculpted outer ring of the Rogue cover with its single nineo’clock spoke is truly an example of minimalist design where form and function merge seamlessly. The VO2 Rogue is available in chrome and wrinkle black finishes.

Next up is the ground-and-pound VO2 Cage Fighter, distinguished by its laser cut and formed stainless steel cage that secures the high-flow filter element to the intake system. It’s available in a beautiful brushed stainless steel finish with a stamped Vance & Hines logo or coated in a rich matte black ceramic paint with laser engraved Vance & Hines logo.

VO2 X in the black contrast finish

The VO2 X speaks for itself, with its prominent “X” fourspoke design pattern locked in attack position. The VO2 X also includes the Vance & Hines logo milled into the center of the cover and features decorative machined fillets/cuts in its outer ring. The VO2 X is available in chrome, wrinkle black and a stunning black contrast finish. The VO2 Blade completes the line-up with a stylish design of two tapering spokes that form a single vertically positioned center section to create a symmetrically balanced look. Like the VO2 X, the Blade is available in three finishes – chrome, wrinkle black and black contrast. For years now, the Vance & Hines VO2 air intake line has enabled the rider to create the complete Stage One performance upgrade package when coupled with a Vance & Hines performance exhaust system and Vance & Hines Fuelpak tuner for all latemodel Harley-Davidson Touring, Cruiser and custom model motorcycles. And now California riders can experience that same level of performance thanks to the recent CARB EO that allows VO2 air intake systems to be sold in the Golden State. ■

rag Specialties has built a reputation as a reliable source for dealers to find parts, accessories and apparel for every facet of motorcycling. That service goes beyond simply acting as a distributor, since Drag also has its own Drag Specialties-branded products. It would take a lot of magazine articles to list out every single one of them. In fact, it would probably be easier to list what Drag doesn’t offer through its house brand. From big items like seats and slip-ons to the tiniest of details, including mounting brackets and bolts, Drag offers virtually everything necessary to build a motorcycle, with the exception of the actual frame and motor. Since these are Drag’s own products, that means they are exclusively available through the Drag dealer network. Drag dealers get the benefit of having an incredible range of products available with just a few clicks, which helps shelves stay stocked and keeps customers happy since they don’t have to wait long for replacements or upgrades. In addition to keeping its products well-stocked and ready to ship, Drag is also continually adding to and upgrading its inventory. New designs, new fitments and even new product categories are always being added to the list of available items. Everything comes attractively packaged to look great on a sales floor, and easy-to-read information helps dealers and customers alike know exactly what’s inside.

Carey Hart returns as the Drag Specialties Brand Ambassador. The FMX pioneer counts on the company’s products and vendors for his many bike builds, including this custom Indian Chief he completed last winter.

CAREY HART IS BACK AS THE DRAG SPECIALTIES BRAND AMBASSADOR

C

CAREY HART

arey Hart is back for his third year as the Drag Specialties Brand Ambassador, which means dealers will find him at Drag events, at rallies and, of course, on the Drag Specialties Instagram account, which Hart likes to commandeer from time to time.

34

We suspect that one of the reasons he enjoys the Insta takeover so much is because it’s a great excuse to get out and ride. “Living in California, we have 12 months a year of riding,” Hart says. “And winter is usually our best months since the hills are green, roads can be quiet and temperatures are just perfect. Most of the country is in ‘bike prep mode,’ so it’s fun to hit the road and share my views from my motorcycle.” Hart’s most recent views have been while coming and going from this year’s Sturgis rally. As much as he loves the event, Hart says that for him, getting there is half the fun. For his 11th Sturgis, he and a crew of friends loaded up their bikes and made a nine-day, 2,800-mile ride from California to South Dakota.

After arriving, it was time for Hart to get to work, which included his role as the Drag Specialties Brand Ambassador. He was on hand at the Drag truck to meet riders, and he took over Drag’s Instagram account for a while. Hart also hosted the annual Good Ride at Sturgis, which had a record 150 motorcycles and 230 riders who turned up to have fun and support veterans. “Drag Specialties has been a great partner for Good Ride,” notes Hart. “We are looking forward to taking this momentum from 2021 and rolling it into an even more successful 2022! Keep an eye out for our rides if you are in the area. They are an absolute blast, and raising money for our veterans is an added plus.” In all, Hart’s trip to Sturgis was a 15-day, 5,000-mile adventure. He came away from it with a sense of just how ready riders are to get back out there and enjoy rides and rallies after so many events had to be cancelled in 2020. Hart himself will be doing plenty of events, too. He’s on the go a lot, anyway, but he’s got a number of upcoming appearances as part of his work with Drag. “Going into my third year as a Drag Specialties Brand Ambassador, I’m really excited about going to Drag-specific events, between the Drag Ride, NVP and hopefully rallies that I have never been to,” Hart says. For him, though, it’s about more than simply showing up at events. He adds, “I really like getting to know the brands that

Drag Specialties distributes. For me, growing up as an FMX rider and team owner, it was always a huge deal to be able to work with Parts Unlimited. And that is no different now, graduating to V-Twin motorcycles.” That transition from competing in motocross and freestyle to building V-Twins might seem like an abrupt 180, but it came about naturally – and sort of accidentally – for Hart. He’s been buying and riding V-Twins since his early 20s, and he had already been to Sturgis five times before he was asked to be the Grand Marshall of the 2015 rally. One of the perks of that role was the gift of a Road Glide. “As a privateer motocross racer and pro FMX rider, I always worked on my own motorcycles. It was part of the job, especially when it came to FMX,” Hart says. “I like to tinker, and with my experience working on my competition motorcycles, I spent a few months customizing my Road Glide.”

DRAG SPECIALTIES BRAND AMBASSADOR

“Big B and myself rode with CrossFit champ Matt Fraser, musician Butch Walker, car builder Del Uschenko, professional skater Chris Cole and wine maker Keith Saarloos,” Hart says. “We hit all the great rides through Washington, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. The weather was perfect, but we did have some detours due to the wildfires. Everyone made it to town in one piece, with a smile on their face and sunburned skin.”

Several magazines noticed, and soon after, Hart was invited to be a builder on the Hot Bike tour. He won a round on the tour and took the top spot at Born Free with a customized FXR. He’s continued building V-Twins since then. Currently, Hart is wrapping up two projects for Indian, with a third waiting in the wings – two Chiefs and a Challenger. He’s keeping the details of all three a secret for the moment, but he is quick to note that Drag products and vendors are a big part of each build. “All of my projects use Dunlop tires, Galfer brake components, Saddlemen seats and Arlen Ness parts, and I love the Drag Specialties license plate that I fit to the rear axle on the Chief. It allows me to clean up the lights and license plate mount that comes stock,” Hart notes. ■

Tires Designed for Adventure

H

arley-Davidson’s rapidly expanding segment of Adventure motorcycling has presented new and truly unique opportunities to blending the two-wheeled freedom of scenic pavement with off-road exhilaration. The evolving versatility of Adventure bikes has challenged tire manufacturers with meeting that mixed demand, and Dunlop hasn’t missed a beat. After extensive market research, engineering and testing over thirty different prototypes throughout a two-year span, Dunlop has established a true 50/50 tire with the allnew Trailmax Mission adventure line. These tires walk the

balance of offering stability, traction and confidence in a wide variety of conditions both on and off the pavement. Considered by Dunlop to be one of its most versatile tires yet, Trailmax Mission tires were designed, tested and are manufactured in the U.S. Dunlop takes pride in offering American-made tires to riders, but it also seeks to truly address riders’ actual wants and needs. Dunlop’s enthusiastic marketing team attended countless shows and events to connect directly with its fellow riders and enthusiasts to better understand what the company’s adventure tires needed to deliver. Mileage was one of the key takeaways, so Dunlop utilized new compounds to deliver longevity without sacrificing on and off-road performance. A first-hand understanding of how much time Adventure riders spend on different surfaces is evident in the Trailmax Mission design. A Staggered Step design in the built-in tread blocks provide rigidity in the contact patch for stability and handling, while deep grooves in the aggressive tread pattern aid in wet weather performance and provide a biting edge for off-road traction.

Trailmax Mission tires have proven to be a great complement to the versatility of Harley-Davidson’s new Pan America Adventure bike. They provide improved handling and great rider feedback.

Dunlop tested the true 50/50 performance of Trailmax Mission tires on many popular adventure models, but in Dunlop’s latest research, has proven to be a great complement to the versatility of Harley-Davidson’s new Adventure offering, the Pan America 1250. The results were overwhelmingly positive, with riders commenting that the tire profile improved the handling feel, making it much nimbler than the bike’s weight would imply. On-road and across a multitude of off-road terrain, the Trailmax Mission-equipped Pan America offered consistent stability combined with predictable and linear feedback, translating to great rider confidence.

Dunlop’s Trailmax Mission is a true 50/50 tire that offers stability, traction and confidence in a wide variety of conditions both on and off the pavement.

Power-sliding with the 150-HP V-Twin felt smooth and easily controlled, and when it came time to stop, the wheels remained straight and controlled when braking in the dirt. The tires’ proven performance is really driven home when considering this testing was executed with traction control off and minimal ABS assistance. Whether your customers are fitting their garage with a new Pan America or they ride one of the many popular other adventure models from BMW, Honda, KTM, Suzuki, Yamaha, or Triumph, Trailmax Mission tires were developed by riders, for riders and will keep the fun rolling for many miles to come. ■

STURGIS REPORT RIDERS FLOCK TO 2021 RALLY AUGUST 6-15 2021

Photos by Rod Olson/Noxbox Photography

T

he town of Sturgis, South Dakota, normally has a population of about 7,000. For the 81st Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, organizers were expecting the town to blossom to 100 times that size. Maybe blossom is the wrong word – explode is the better choice, since by all accounts, the size of this year’s rally far surpassed anything seen in years. In fact, traffic around Sturgis and the Black Hills has been up since the springtime. It’s not just riders, but also cars and campers (both the rustic kind and the fancy-pants kind) on the road. Clearly, people were ready to hit the road this summer and, for the rally, finding a last-minute hotel or camping spot was next to impossible. Luckily, Drag Specialties had booked a spot well in advance. As usual, the Drag Event Truck was set up and showing off at Black Hills Harley-Davidson in Rapid City, South Dakota. Drag staff showed off custom bikes and products available exclusively through Drag. The vendors and installers who were making the dealership’s parking lot home during the rally were all kept busy, with strong sales reported across the board. Typically, the first weekend of the rally is the busiest, and this year was no exception as riders flooded into town to get the party started. All of the iconic sites, like Full Throttle Saloon, Buffalo Chip and the Main Street staples were doing brisk business.

Every year Sturgis rolls out the welcome mat and riders come rolling in eager to see and be seen, especially on that rally hotspot — Main Street.

With so many riders on hand, that meant there had to be a lot of entertainment, too. It was impossible to do everything since there were so many options, and there was plenty of variety to ensure there was something everyone would enjoy. Stunt riders, short track racing and custom bike shows were a few of the motorcycle-centric activities happening, but of course there were also a lot of concerts, too. And by a lot, we mean more than 250 shows on the official lineup. On top of all the scheduled events, riding is, obviously, still a huge part of Sturgis. Riders can always expect a few thunderstorms in the Black Hills region, and this year was no exception. But for the most part the weather cooperated, and riders were able to tour the stunning landscape and cruise past Mount Rushmore. Hopefully, the enthusiasm for Sturgis is a benchmark for the rallies that will be happening elsewhere in the coming months. Riders are ready to rally, eager to give their business to the vendors and excited to get out and ride.

TIRES

Rolling Like Royalty Tires for the King of Sturgis

Riders need a reliable tire no matter what the weather conditions are, so the Michelin Commander III Cruiser tire is designed to deliver even more wet grip and durability than its predecessor, the Commander II tire. In fact, the German motorcycle magazine MOTORRAD gave the Michelin Commander III Cruiser tire high marks for wet grip in its June 2020 issue. Since touring is all about going the distance, rain or shine, the Commander III Touring tire is designed to give Baggers a boost in both wet grip and longevity, which is achieved in part with new tread compounds. The Michelin Commander III Cruiser and Touring tires offer V-Twin riders a choice for crosscountry trips as well as one designed for performance around town and on quick getaways.

T

Riders at the 2021 Sturgis Rally got the chance to check out the new Scorcher Adventure, the tire that Michelin and HarleyDavidson developed and co-branded for the new Pan America.

he V-Twin is king at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally each year, and every king deserves to roll in style. Michelin was on hand at Sturgis again this year to meet the riders who came from all over North America for the week. For Michelin, Sturgis was a chance to get a firsthand account from riders about their wants and needs in a motorcycle tire. As for the riders, they got the opportunity to learn about the Michelin® Commander® III tire range for V-Twins as well as the new Michelin Scorcher® Adventure tire, which is the OE tire for the Harley-Davidson Pan America Adventure Touring bike. The Michelin Commander III tire range includes two versions, Cruiser and Touring. That means the tire is a great choice for V-Twin riders who made a cross-country trip to Sturgis, as well as riders who simply want a great tire for quick getaways and trips around town. The Commander III tires are notable for their long-lasting tread life and excellent wet grip – a big bonus for those surprise rainstorms that can pop up during rallies. Michelin can achieve such outstanding wet grip thanks in part to the 100 percent silica-reinforced rubber in both the front and rear tread compounds. The tire profile and contact patch have also been optimized, providing stability and excellent wear characteristics. And, of course, it’s not just about performance. A V-Twin should look good, right down to the tires, which is why Commander III tires feature Michelin’s Premium Touch Technology, a patented sidewall design that enhances V-Twin styling.

CABLE KITS

Correct Cables

New Kits for 2021 Touring Bikes Cables have been all the buzz this year due to the changes made to the 2021 Harley-Davidson Touring family. The Motor Co. went from using a hydraulic clutch back to a manual clutch cable, with the added benefit of a two-piece application much like the MilwaukeeEight Softails. A sudden change in Harley’s manufacturing can throw a wrench in any aftermarket companies’ production line. However, with three decades of experience this was just another day at the factory for the LA Choppers team and they got right to the drawing boards.

LA Choppers now has Touring Cable Kits for the 2021 Harley-Davidson Touring models. The kits are essential for customers looking to swap out their handlebars.

W

hat is the most commonly asked question when purchasing a set of handlebars? What do they cost? How do they look? How do they feel? Surprisingly, it’s actually, “What cable kit works best with these bars and my bike?” Let’s be honest, helping your customer with handlebars can be a tedious task. What style? What height? How much pullback? What’s the width? It’s not as easy as it seems, but the bottom line is, no matter what they choose, chances are they will need new cables to achieve their goals. Knowing this, LA Choppers has made this aspect of a handlebar swap that much easier with their high-quality cable kits. The company offers a variety of finishes including stainless, Midnight Black and vinyl to meet almost all aesthetic needs, as well as a wide range of heights and fitments for almost every Harley-Davidson model available.

OCTOBER 2021

After months of R&D the wait will finally be over as LA Choppers delivers its new Touring Cable Kits. The kits will be offered in all the classic finishes with plenty of height options for that new 2021 ride! The best part is they have incorporated the two-piece clutch cable technology for ease of install. That’s right, simply disconnect the stock cable and install the new LA Choppers clutch cable upper and get to riding that much sooner!

That’s not the only good cable news coming out of the LA Choppers camp. With Harley stepping up its performance game, the factory has also improved its stopping game. Models such as the Fat Bob and Lowrider S are equipped with dual disc front brakes. After many requests and some R&D time, LA Choppers just released its new Softail dual disc fitments as well. Again, these dual disc kits will be offered in the classic finishes and height options. The team at LA Choppers understands the retail environment and is constantly striving to make the front-line workers’ and technicians’ jobs that much easier while producing quality products to meet your customers’ expectations. LA Choppers has also made it easy for your service techs and DIY customers to find the appropriate kit for the model of motorcycle and handlebar that is being installed. Simply go to www.handlebarcables.com to find out in seconds exactly which Drag Specialties part number is right for the project at hand. ■

Precise Placement Adjustable Shift Linkage

That’s where THRASHIN Supply’s lineup of foot controls comes in. Headlined by the new adjustable shift linkage and backed up by the TSC billet shift lever and an array of shifter tips and footpegs, THRASHIN has the hardware to get any Harley’s foot controls dialed in. If you take a knee next to any Dyna, Softail, or Touring model, you’ll see that the stock shift linkage leaves much to be desired. It’s a non-adjustable and dull-looking rod with two low-quality ball joints. No worries, THRASHIN’s new adjustable shift linkage is here to provide a precise, fully adjustable and totally stylish means of linking the shift lever and the shift shaft. It starts with high-quality components – THRASHIN uses premium heim joints with stainless-steel balls and Teflon-coated bushings. This combination offers a longlasting joint that’s smooth-moving and free of play. Both heim joints thread into a custom-machined shift shaft, and are secured with stainless-steel ARP hardware. The new adjustable shift linkage is available in triple-plated chrome or a hard-anodized black finish for all Dynas, Softails and Touring models with mid controls. The only thing better than the adjustable shift linkage’s looks is its easy adjustability. With the stock linkage, the only option is to rotate the shift lever on the splines of the shaft. If the rider doesn’t like where it falls, tough. With THRASHIN’s new linkage, the shifter height can be adjusted with infinite precision. Just crack the lock nuts free and rotate the rod to shorten or lengthen it and fine tune the pedal height. It only takes one wrench, and you don’t have to remove the linkage from the bike. While THRASHIN was putting in work at the foot controls, its engineers applied their know-how to the shift lever to develop the new TSC billet shift arm. Machined from aerospace-grade 6061 billet aluminum, this lever is light and strong, and thoughtfully finished off with stainless steel ARP hardware. It will accept any of THRASHIN’s shifter pegs and is designed to fit all Dyna, Softail, Touring and FXR models. As with the adjustable shift linkage, the TSC billet shift arm is offered in chrome and anodized black finishes.

With THRASHIN’s adjustable shift linkage your customers can dial in their foot controls for precise, accurate shifting. There are fitments for all Dynas, Softails and Touring models with mid controls.

T

hrottle back, clutch in, grab a gear and get on the gas! Accelerating through the gears on a motorcycle is one of the most exciting aspects of riding, but if the foot controls on your customers’ Harley-Davidsons don’t fit, then they might not be enjoying the ride as much as they could be.

Twin Cam Bagger Power Mid-Length 2-into-1 Exhausts

Bassani is now offering its Mid-Length 2-into-1 Road Rage performance exhausts for direct fitment on 1995 through 2006 Harley-Davidson Twin Cam Touring models.

B

assani is now offering its Mid-Length 2-into-1 Road Rage exhausts for direct fitment on 1995 through 2006 Harley-Davidson Twin Cam Touring models. A pipe length and style already popular on the later Twin Cams and Milwaukee-Eights, these latest Bassani Mid-Length systems complete the lineup. Now all Twin Cam Bagger riders have the option of another true 2-into-1 sport performance exhaust, this time with pipes that neatly split the difference between Bassani’s full-length 2-into-1 systems and its Megaphone Shorties. These midlength exhausts are designed to exit just ahead of the rear axle. Baggers aren’t just for touring, not anymore. They’ve fast become the platform for a true performance machine, both on the street and on the track, as seen at the inaugural Bagger Racing League weekend. Saddlebags and all, these bikes are taking on a whole new, sport-influenced role. In that role a horsepower-andtorque-building 2-into-1 exhaust is all but mandatory. Bassani’s Mid-Length 2-into-1 exhausts are available in chrome, black or stainless with the choice of a megaphone muffler, or in chrome or black with a 3½-inch Straight Can Muffler with a hot-rod turnout. The system is built to perform, and features equal-length 1¾-inch to 17/8-inch stepped head pipes and Bassani’s performance-design collector. There’s a removable spiral-core louvered baffle inside both the Megaphone and Straight Can Muffler, and 18mm O2 bungs, 12mm adapters and heat shields are all standard. Delivering plenty of power with that distinctive Bassani sound, the pipes are tight-fitting for a clean look and

everything – pipes and either muffler choice – completely clears an FL’s right-side saddlebag for a no-hassle installation. These days a Bagger can be anything a rider wants, from a traditional long-haul tourer to a performance bike with a sporting edge. And, in that sport role, Bassani’s 2-into-1 systems, Long, Short and Mid-Length, can play an important part. ■

A Half Century of Performance Parts for V-Twins, from Stem to Stern

Performance Machine’s axle adjuster allows for precise tuning of rear axle, which helps with proper wheel alignment and belt/chain tension.

The Phatbar and Riser Kit from Performance Machine allows your customers to transform the look, feel and function of the cockpit on most Harley models.

means better handling as well as improved tire longevity and belt/chain life. To make life even easier, the kit has removable rear stand spools that allow bikes with short two-into-one exhaust systems to easily be lifted up on a rear stand for maintenance. Each kit includes a 304 stainless steel 25mm rear axle, machined-aluminum axle adjuster mounts, machined axle adjustment sliders, a stylish machined axle nut, and safety E-clips. It also comes with upper and lower shock mounting bolts and spacers. Available in black or gold anodized finishes, the Performance Machine Axle Adjuster Kit is designed for 2009-2021 Harley Touring Models.

S

ince 1970, Performance Machine has focused on creative components for the V-Twin market. From its original custom wheels and performance brake kits to modern parts like this Axle Adjuster Kit and Phatbar Riser Kit, PM’s pursuit of innovative parts has been going on for more than 50 years, and won’t be slowing down any time soon. As Harley-Davidson’s Touring models continue to grow in size and speed, maintaining proper wheel alignment is critical, as it affects everything from the bike’s steering and stability to tire and drivetrain wear. That’s where PM’s precision Axle Adjuster Kit comes in. While the factory cam-style adjuster may be adequate for some riders, it’s like using a tape measure instead of a micrometer when compared to the upgraded axle setup. The PM axle adjuster allows precise tuning of rear axle placement and thus wheel alignment and belt/chain tension via lasered-etched reference lines and threaded screw-type adjuster sliders. Better rear-wheel alignment

Moving up to the front of the bike there’s PM’s Phatbar and Riser Kit, ready to customize the cockpit on most Harley models. Combining a tapered-aluminum Phatbar with a set of billet-aluminum risers, this can totally transform the look and feel of your customers’ bikes. The Phatbar itself features a beefy 1¼-inch clamping area that tapers down to 1 inch for use with OEM controls. The bar is made from 7050-T6 aluminum with a 2½inch, 3-inch pullback, and 32-inch width. With slots for fly-by-wire throttles, the Phatbar is ready to accept a cable throttle or electronic throttle. The risers add another 9 inches of rise and are made from 6061-T6 billet aluminum with either internal or external wiring options. Combining the Phatbar with PM’s risers raises the controls a full 12 inches for an upright and relaxed riding position, while the wide, lightweight bar adds steering leverage for even better handling. Offered in anodized black or gold. ■

Fitment Finders

A Great Source for a Job Done Right

S&S Cycle offers online tools like the “Shop by Motorcycle” feature to make it dead simple to know that when you go to your Drag sales rep with an order, you’ll be getting the exact parts needed for the job at hand.

F

inding the right components for the job is critical for your parts counter crew and service techs. We get that dealerships and shops live by the motto “time is money” and there’s nothing more counter-productive than ordering the wrong parts when there’s a bike on the lift and a customer waiting. There are no winners in that situation. While Drag Specialties is the go-to source for all things V-Twin, manufacturers like S&S Cycle are the primary authority on ‘what fits what’ when it comes to the company’s extensive range of go-fast products. Knowing this, the team at S&S Cycle offers online tools that make it dead simple to know that when you go to your Drag sales rep with an order, you’ll be getting the exact parts needed for the job at hand. Navigate to the S&S Cycle website at www.sscycle.com and check out the company’s “Shop by Motorcycle” feature. This robust search feature is an excellent tool for verifying fitment right from the start. Simply input model year, make and specific bike model and the S&S algorithms go to work filtering through the company’s vast product line and return only the parts for that one specific bike model. This is a huge time saver for when your store needs to quickly verify parts before making its Drag Specialties order.

56

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

OCTOBER 2021

This powerful feature not only helps identify the specific parts for the bike you’re working on, it can also help precisely locate replacement components for many S&S Cycle products. This is especially helpful when needing to order something like a rebuild kit for a Super E carburetor or an OE replacement cam bearing for a 2006 Harley-Davidson Dyna. If that part exists in the FatBook or OldBook, the S&S search features will help find it. The S&S Cycle website also serves up a wealth of technical information for its product line that Drag Specialties carries. Need an owner’s manual for one of the V-series complete engines you find in the OldBook? You’ll find it under the “Tech Info” tab. Looking for a no-nonsense spec guide and overview for the company’s big lineup of upgrade camshafts? It’s right there in “Tech Info” and it features easily understood explanations of recommended applications. When it comes time to order the right parts for the job or your shop simply needs some technical advice, the S&S Cycle website and its multi-function search options and library of knowledge is a great source for getting the correct, detailed information for both you and your Drag rep. ■

Milwaukee-Eight Transmission Rebuild Kits

otorcycles that are ridden are motorcycles that will wear out parts, including transmission internals such as bearings and shafts, clips and locks, and seals and gaskets. Those components aren’t necessarily prone to breakage, but over time need to be replaced, usually during a routine transmission teardown and rebuild With that in mind, Drag Specialties dealers should expect an uptick in demand for servicing Cruise Drive six-speed transmissions for Harley-Davidson Touring and Softail Milwaukee-Eight models. As your customers rack up the miles on those M-8 machines it’s going to be time to dip into their transmissions.

JIMS’ new Milwaukee-Eight Cruise Drive six-speed transmission rebuild kits include everything needed for an upgrade, all under one part number.

Chasing down each individual transmission part numbers for what amounts to dozens of individual components can be time consuming, which translates into higher labor costs for the shop technician performing an M-8 tranny rebuild. After all, time is money and money saved in the shop means a more favorable invoice to the customer. That’s where JIMS Machining plays a key role in helping keep a transmission’s overhaul costs low, with two new rebuild kits that are specific to all M-8 Touring and Softail models. Both of JIMS’s new M-8 transmission rebuild kits – there’s one for Touring models and one for Softails – carry single part numbers that cover more than 45 individual parts per kit (excluding gears and shafts), enough for a

complete transmission overhaul. All the JIMS replacement transmission parts are made to OEM specs, too, assuring a quality rebuild. And, like all JIMS parts and specialty tools that Drag carries, the M-8 Transmission Rebuild Kit parts – from gaskets to bearings – are sourced in the USA.

“One part number, one price and you’re ready to rebuild any M-8 Cruise Drive six-speed transmission.”

“Trying to source over 45 individual pieces when rebuilding a motorcycle transmission is daunting in the extreme,” said Paul Platts, Director of Product and Business Development for JIMS Machining. “We’ve tried it, and that is what led us to develop this kit. One part number, one price and you’re ready to rebuild any M-8 Cruise Drive six-speed transmission.” The new M-8 transmission kits join a wealth of other JIMS specialty tools and transmission rebuild kits for servicing Harley models of all vintage. As usual, the M-8 and Twin Cam models are found in the FatBook pages, while other JIMS products for Evolution, Knucklehead, Panhead and Shovelhead models are featured in the OldBook. ■

ake a look at any bike path or bike rack these days and you’ll notice a marked increase in E-bikes. From casual road rides to extreme downhill trails to daily commuting, E-bikes have gained momentum thanks to their ease of use and impressive range. And whether your customers are riding an E-bike they bought at your store or somewhere else, Drag Specialties has the accessories and apparel to keep them cruising. As with riding a motorcycle, strapping on a helmet is a must when setting out on an E-bike. For casual commuters and those exploring fire roads or single-track, the Altis helmet from 100% is a good choice. The Altis utilizes a proprietary Smartshock suspended rotational system coupled with 14 ventilation ports resulting in a breathable and budget-friendly trail helmet. If your customers are after a little more coverage and added features like a multi-density EPS liner, they can upgrade to the Altec helmet from 100%. The Vector Tech Polar helmet from Alpinestars is also an excellent option, with a MIPS-equipped liner and extended coverage for the temples and the back of the head. Pair any of these helmets with stylish eyewear from 100% and your customers will have their head gear dialed. For a comfortable place to sit while mashing the pedals, Drag has the Fizik Terra Aidon X3 saddle in 145 mm and 165 mm widths to fit most riders. This versatile seat has a ride-compliant fiber-reinforced nylon shell that’s

designed to flex and adapt to the rider’s leg movements. That’s backed up by progressive padding for all-day comfort, whether your customers are logging miles in the bike lane or climbing to the top of a mountain peak. Topeak’s Aero Wedge seat pack is a great accessory to add to the Fizik saddle or any seat, as it allows riders to easily carry essentials like a spare tube or tool kit. Drag has the Aero Wedge in medium (60-80 cubic inch capacity) and large (90-120 cubic inch capacity) to fit your customers’ needs. The Aero Wedge mounts securely and easily with a combination of straps and quick-release buckles. Properly inflated tires are important no matter what the ride, so having an efficient tire pump on hand is mandatory. For that, Drag Specialties has the Gem floor pump and Klic pump from Crankbrothers. The Gem has a sturdy steel construction and can be switched between high volume and high pressure. The Klic has an attractive slim design with a hidden, integrated hose with magnetic retention, plus a large digital pressure gauge. To accurately check and adjust tire pressures, Topeak’s Smartgauge D2 is the tool to grab. This second-generation digital gauge features a rotating head that works seamlessly with Presta and Schrader valves and it can handle up to 250 PSI. Of course, Drag also carries inner tubes from Michelin available in all common sizes. ■

Tool Time

Setting Up for Precision Engine Builds With a toolbox full of Feuling’s specialty V-Twin engine tools, your service techs and DIY customers will have what’s needed to get the job done right.

T

he techs at Feuling Parts have made a career building better V-Twin engines. They’ve developed many tools to aid in that work too, equipment that not only assures precision, but also helps speed up the job. Any shop offering deep-engine service will want a look at them all.

A good start is the Crankshaft Run-Out Measuring Tools. They’re available for Evos, Twin Cams and Milwaukee-Eights, and help simplify the process of checking pinion run-out. On a Twin Cam, they can also measure gear drive back lash. Feuling’s Twin Cam Camplate PSI Test Tool allows bench-testing camplates so pressure-relief valves can be checked for positive sealing and pop-off adjustment. There’s also an Oil Pump PSI Test Tool for the M8s. Applicable only to Feuling pumps – the tool doesn’t fit OEM pumps – builders and techs can cycle and adjust an M8’s pressure relief valve. A Camplate/Oil Pump Reamer Tool will resurface the pressure relief valve seat on all Twin Cam camplates and M8 oil pumps. Used in conjunction with the pressure test tools, the reamer lightly faces the relief valve seat. To keep an eye on all this oiling-system work, Feuling offers oil pressure gauge kits for EVO, Twin Cam, XL and M8 engines. They’re liquid silicone filled, feature 1½-inch dials and stay accurate to within 2 to 3 percent. Shifting focus to the valvetrain, Feuling has Lifter Bore Measuring Kits. Precision ground go/no-go steel balls, the kit allows quick, accurate measurement of lifter bore diameters. Aiming for a clearance of 0.001- to 0.0015-inch for optimum lifter performance, Feuling’s oversized Race Lifters in +0.001- and +0.0015-inch diameters can set things right – once you know the lifter-bore size. Feuling’s Valve Spring Seat Cutter and Pilot Set allows proper fitting of valve springs. Cutters and pilots are available to fit V-Twins from 1948 to 2021. All the cutters work with hand drills to machine the spring seats and correct installed-height and cup-fitment issues. ■

A Show-Worthy Rotor for Performance Braking

T

here is a lot of science that goes into a brake rotor, but Galfer is the brand that actually shows off the science. The CUBIQ® rotor for V-Twins has eye-catching hexagon styling that was designed like that for a lot more than just the dramatic look. For one thing, the rotor resembles the crystalline structure of a steel molecule. The angular design of the CUBIQ rotor is also carefully engineered to provide optimal braking performance. Using the latest technology, Galfer engineers created a rotor design with an ideal mass-heat dissipation ratio to enhance cooling. The result is Galfer’s lightest, highestperforming rotor to date. V-Twin riders are already familiar with the popular Galfer WAVE® rotor, and the CUBIQ rotor is the next step in that style’s evolution. The CUBIQ rotor is designed to be just as capable as the modern V-Twins they are built for, meaning it is a high-performance, predictable rotor that gives V-Twin riders ultimate confidence in their braking setup. Of course, the CUBIQ rotors don’t just resemble steel molecules, they’re actually laser-cut from a proprietary alloy

Galfer’s dramatically styled CUBIQ rotors are designed for optimal performance and a unique look. It is the company’s lightest and highestperforming rotor.

of unrecycled 420 stainless steel and parallel double-disc ground to ensure absolute precision. The design and the steel combine to create a rotor with outstanding cooling properties as well as reduced weight compared to OEM rotors. In all, the CUBIQ rotor is a high-performance brake rotor that stops precisely and consistently, while also improving maneuverability thanks to the reduced weight. ■

Fighting Clutch Hand Fatigue

R

ider fatigue comes in many forms, including overworked hands from stiff clutches. Müller Motorcycle’s Power Clutch and Hydro Clutch are designed to make life easier for motorcycle riders by reducing the force necessary to engage the clutch lever. Even large-displacement V-Twins are easy to shift with one of these hidden clutch boosters. In fact, the statistics for just how much a Power Clutch reduces force on the clutch lever are better than ever. With Harley-Davidson models up to 2020, the Power Clutch reduces the effort required to engage the clutch lever by up to 45 percent. With the 2021 Harley-Davidson models, which are equipped with Bowden clutch cables, the Power Clutch is even more effective, reducing the necessary force by nearly 50 percent. The Power Clutch is designed for Evo, Twin Cam and Milwaukee-Eight models with a mechanical clutch, and it is compatible with every model from 1987-2021, with the exception of the Pan America.

Müller Motorcycle’s Power Clutch and Hydro Clutch are designed to reduce clutch pull on a range of HarleyDavidson models.

CLUTCH PARTS

Clutch Performance

The Hydro Clutch provides the same finger-saving service for Twin Cam and M8 models with hydraulic clutches. Twin Cam models get a 35 percent reduction in the force required to engage the clutch lever, while the M8 models benefit from an even more impressive 45 percent reduction. The Power Clutch and Hydro Clutch might be small, but Müller Motorcycle founder Werner Müller put a lot of engineering into them to ensure easier clutching and a smoother clutch response. They replace the OEM inner and outer ramp assemblies, and once installed, they are completely hidden. ■

Clutch Upgrades for Harley-Davidsons

H Rekluse’s TorqDrive clutch pack.

arley’s MilwaukeeEight and Twin-Cam engines are powerful platforms, but there’s always room for improvement. Rekluse’s TorqDrive clutch pack and manual slave cylinder are easy ways to raise the torque capacity of your customers’ clutches while simultaneously lowering the lever pull by up to 60 percent.

TorqDrive clutch packs provide more disks in less space, which means more torque capacity. In fact, TorqDrive is rated to handle up to 200 ft.-lbs. From the cockpit, riders with TorqDrive clutch packs feel improved drive and control, along with a 10 percent to 30 percent reduction in lever effort. TorqDrive disks use a steel core for better heat dissipation, virtually eliminating clutch fade under hard use. Meanwhile, a clever friction-pad design increases oil flow

while reducing drag, making for cleaner disengagement, modulation, and take-up. TorqDrive kits also come with steel sleeves that slip into the clutch-basket channels, preventing basket wear and notching that impedes performance and reduces clutch life. For maximum ease of use, your customers can install Rekluse’s manual slave cylinder alongside the TorqDrive clutch pack. This slave cylinder is designed to reduce lever-pull effort on hydraulic Milwaukee-Eight and Twin-Cam models by the maximum amount without compromising control. The manual slave cylinder offers an expanded friction zone for more control at the lever and smoother takeoffs and shifting. Most importantly, the manual slave cylinder reduces lever pull by over 30 percent on M-8 models, and 20 percent for Twin-Cam engines, and when combined with a TorqDrive clutch pack, total lever pull can drop by 60 percent. ■

PISTONS

Bagger Boost

Piston Upgrades for the Milwaukee-Eight KB Piston’s new Super Duty 4.250-inch pistons for 107-inch, 114-inch and 117-inch MilwaukeeEight engines offer higher compression ratios and increased displacement.

T

here’s big news for the performance Bagger and V-Twin market. KB Pistons has expanded its popular Super Duty line of big-bore pistons for Milwaukee-Eight engines. Specifically, pistons with 4.250-inch bore sizes are now available for 107-inch, 114inch and 117-inch M-8 engines. The new pistons increase engine displacement to 124 inches (for 107-inch engines) and 128 inches (for 114-inch and 117-inch engines). Due to the larger bore size, slip-in replacement cylinders, such as Drag Specialties’ new aftermarket 4.250-inch bore

cylinders are required. An M-8 engine’s OE jugs don’t offer enough metal to allow machine boring for the larger 4.250-inch overbore size. In addition, compression ratio also gets a noticeable boost. The KB big-bore pistons for 107-inch engines raises engine compression ratio from stock 11.1 to 11.8. The 114-inch and 117-inch M-8 engines fitted with the new KB pistons result in 11.7:1 compression ratio. As all V-Twin owners know, higher compression spells snappier throttle response, especially in the lower rpm range. The Super Series is also available as an 0.005-inch overbore piston for service repair. Like all Super Duty pistons, the new 4.250-inch-bore pistons for M-8 models feature KB’s signature Type 3 hard-anodized piston crown and top ring groove to offer a very hard and flat surface for the ring to rotate on. Each piston also features KB’s Line2Line abradable skirt coating to reduce piston rock, plus create a superior ring seal and quieter operation. ■

Innovative Coils for Harley-Davidson Twin Cams

H

eat and its potential problems are common factors of concern for Harley-Davidson riders. While heat related issues are typically attributed to the engine, ignition coils are responsible for supplying the energy required to fire the spark plugs, and as a result, can generate a fair amount of heat, especially on machines with old plug wires. High resistance in worn out wires causes coils to generate more energy, which means more heat. The folks at ACCEL aimed to improve Harley ignition design with Stealth SuperCoils. These coils adopt the efficiency of common automotive systems with a patent pending design that mounts the coil directly to the spark plug. This not only eliminates the need for ignition wires, but also provides higher, more consistent voltage and up to 25 percent more energy supplied to the spark plugs. This improved spark performance results in more efficient combustion and engine operation. Stealth SuperCoils address the heat issue with an aluminum cover holding the coil in place and acting as a

ACCEL’s Stealth SuperCoil kits eliminate the need for spark plug wires and provide a stronger, consistent spark. The innovative design also pulls heat away from the cylinder head.

heat sink to pull heat away from the coil and cylinder head. The wiring is hidden in the fins of the cover, providing a clean and custom look. Stealth SuperCoil kits come complete with everything needed to get the installation job done right – even Loctite and a hex key are included. Stealth SuperCoil kits are available for many Dyna, Softail and Touring Twin Cam models, all of which are covered by ACCEL’s limited lifetime warranty. ■

Performance with Purpose New Foot Pegs and Bolt Kits

Pro One BMX V2 foot pegs

T

he no-slip grip of Pro One’s MOTO and BMX foot pegs is now available for late-model Milwaukee-Eight Softails. Pro One, delivering Harley-Davidson accessories since 1989, always seems to come up with the right parts for the times and the time for these additions to the Pro Pegs lineup is now. Purposeful performance is in and foot pegs like these fit that vibe.

Pro One MOTO V2 foot pegs

Right along with those no-slip foot pegs, Pro One also has a pair of machined billet steering stem top bolts new to the FatBook. OEM replacements. They’ll net a big appearance boost for minimal effort and there are more finish choices from which to choose. Pro One has also added a new seat bolt kit to the lineup. The new MOTO V2 and BMX V2 billet foot pegs for M-8 Softails feature a thin tapered design for added

ground clearance, and they’re CNC machined from billet aluminum. Each have traditional BMX-style traction pins on the surface to provide fantastic all-around grip. Both the MOTO V2 (2¼-inches wide x 3½-inches long) and the BMX V2 (3¾-inches wide x 3¾-inches long) have 360-degree adjustable clevis mounts with locking set screws so the pegs can be customized to rider preference. They’re both available in Chrome, Black Anodized, Red Anodized and Gold (Titanium Nitride) finishes so riders can have the look they want, too. And those two other Pro One FatBook additions, the steering stem top bolts and the seat bolt kits, have a cool look, too. The machined billet steering stem top bolts are offered with a raw aluminum finish or Black anodized, and there’s a long list of applications covering Dynas, FXRs and Sportsters from the mid-1980s on. The seat bolt kits come with either a Black or Red anodized trim ring and are direct replacements for all 1996 and later Harleys – Dynas Softails, Sportsters and Touring models are all covered. The kit features polished stainless Allenhead screws and countersunk billet-aluminum washers, which add a nice detail behind the seat. The FatBook is full of accessories like these from Pro One, everything from shift linkages and custom rod ends and engine covers, mirrors, dash panels and custom lighting to fuel caps, grips, triple-trees, and fork legs. ■
