Welcome 2022! by D on Em de

ith this issue, we begin our 29th year of producing magazines for LeMans Corporation. We started in 1994, and in the first year the magazines covered both the metric market for Parts Unlimited and the V-Twin market for Drag Specialties. A year later Drag Specialties got a magazine all to itself, as it has been ever since. Since those early days, we have enjoyed bringing you the

Interest in Bagger racing continues to grow. With the one and only King of the Baggers race at Laguna Seca in 2020, two different organizations came up with Bagger race schedules and formats for 2021. MotoAmerica, the premier motorcycle roadracing sanctioning organization in the United States, put together a 3-race mini-series this year devoted just to Baggers within their main schedule. King of

news about the Drag Specialties team, plus the events, rides, projects, racing victories and, of course, the many great products found in the Drag Specialties FatBook and OldBook catalogs.

the Baggers events were held at Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca and Road America. For 2022, that schedule will double to 6 events.

In this issue, we feature the behind-the-scenes story of the 2022 FatBook cover bike. This spectacular custom build was done by Dave Dupor, a Drag Specialties dealer located in Lake Villa, north of Chicago, Illinois. Dave started with a 2018 Harley-Davidson Road Glide and his latest FatBook catalog. When he was done, he had achieved the long, low fat-front-tire look that his customers are asking for these days with “everything expected in a full-custom and a race-ready Performance Bagger.” Be sure to check this bike out starting on page 14.

Another organization, the Bagger Racing League (BRL), was born this year and devoted exclusively to roadracing American-made V-Twins. Rob Buydos, a long-time voice of Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited events, took a unique approach with events that include Bagger races in conjunction with classes for various other Harley and Indian configurations. In this issue, the 2021 BRL season finale at Sonoma, California is featured in the News, starting on page 8. Be sure to read about the many Drag Specialties vendors that fielded teams there, including Trask, Saddlemen, SlyFox, Feuling, Arlen Ness and others. ■

In addition to the story about the new FatBook, we are all looking forward to our return to Louisville, Kentucky on January 29-30 for the revival of the NVP Product Expo. After a two-year Covid-hold, it will be great to see old friends again and perhaps the first chance in a while to hear from the manufacturers first-hand what the features and benefits are about for their latest product introductions. To get everyone in the mood, check out our NVP Expo Preview starting on page 18.

Hope to see you in Louisville!

ven though the term “Performance Baggers” has been around for a while, many people laughed back in 2020 when the concept of racing Harley and Indian Baggers was first introduced. The laughter ended in October that year when the first “Drag Specialties King of the Baggers” race was run at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California. The racing was entertaining, and the audience especially enjoyed seeing the upgrades that the teams had made to raise the ground clearance, reduce the weight and increase the horsepower.

NEWS EVENTS That single race at Laguna Seca opened the door for an organization called the Bagger Racing League, dedicated 100 percent to roadracing American-made V-Twin motorcycles. BRL founder Rob Buydos put together a two-event series for 2021 to include a variety of machines. Classes include the F/S Cup exclusively for water-cooled Harleys and Indians; Lite Weight Twins for Sportsters; Big Twins; Pro Stock Baggers and the premier Bagger GP class. Following the first event at Utah Motorsport Campus in June of 2021, the series moved in December to Sonoma Raceway, located in the wine country just north of San Francisco Bay. Points earned in Sonoma would be added to those from Utah to determine the 2021 Champions. One last-minute change was combining what would have been a two-day race into a single day on December 11th because of a heavy rainstorm due to arrive on Sunday. The newsmakers of the Sonoma round were Patricia Fernandez, first female competitor to win a BRL race when she won both the F/S Cup race and the 2021 #1 plate in her class aboard a Team Saddlemen Indian; Benny Carlson, who won three races (ICON Lite Weight Twins, NAMZ Big Twin and Metzeler Pro Stock Bagger). race and season championship on the SlyFox / Suburban Harley-Davidson, plus the Lite Weight Twins and Big Twin races for Suburban Harley-Davidson. And last, but not least, was Shane Narbonne who passed Saddlemen’s Cory West on the last lap of the Custom Dynamics Bagger GP race to win both the race and 2021 title for his Trask Turbo HarleyDavidson team. ■

2022 FATBOOK COVER BIKE CUSTOMIZED BY DD CUSTOM CYCLE

The 2022 FatBook bike checks off all the boxes. Long and low, it’s a full-custom with a big front tire. It’s also a race-ready performer with mega-inch power, and how about that Voodoo Blue paint!

his bike has that tough, aggressive look. It’s broadshouldered, like a pit bull.” Viewed from the front Dave Dupor is right about that. But the 2018 Road Glide he put together at DD Custom Cycle in Lake Villa, Illinois has a whole lot more than just that going on. “I wanted to try something that I hadn’t seen done yet,” he says. “I wanted to bring together that tough-guy look with the long, low fat-front-tire thing that’s so popular

now,” Dupor says. He then combined those elements with everything expected in a full-custom and a race-ready Performance Bagger.” This Porsche Voodoo Blue-colored creation accomplishes all of that. It’s long, it’s low, it’s stocky, it’s got that big powerful engine and driveline, and it’s a true full-custom. It’s got it all. It also has the Cover Bike spot on the new 2022 FatBook, due to be in your hands shortly, if it isn’t already. And here’s • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

the thing – as stunning and maybe even as ground-breaking as this Road Glide is it’s a real FatBook bike. For the most part this one went together using bolt-on parts and accessories straight out of that Drag Specialties catalog. Dave Dupor, well-known for his award-winning/magazinefeature custom Bagger masterpieces featuring one-off fabricated parts, admits that he had to hold back from how he normally builds a ground-up custom. The end-goal, after all, was a bike done with parts anyone could get from the FatBook. And with very few exceptions – custom molding a new scowl and scalloped side vents into the OEM Road Glide fairing, for instance – just about everything seen here comes with a Drag Specialties part number and is a bolt-on installation. Limiting himself to FatBook bolt-ons didn’t mean Dave Dupor would limit the amount of thought and effort that went into his build, and it all began by stripping the Harley down to its bare

Gold-anodized highlights, seen here on the Trask Performance riser and Performance Machine master cylinder/lever, add accent. It’s everywhere from the swingarm and chain to the pegs and the paint.

frame. It’s Dupor’s firm belief that a full custom, absolutely requires a painted frame. For a DD Custom that’s a given. And secondly, the sheer volume of new parts and assemblies the Road Glide would receive virtually dictated a ground-up rebuild. A lot of work? Absolutely, but well worth it. Starting with the chassis and powertrain Dupor added a gold anodized Trask Performance billet aluminum swingarm kit, beginning a theme that would continue with gold anodized accents throughout. Performance Machine Revolution wheels, 18 x 5.5 with Pirelli Night Dragon 180/55B-18s were chosen both front and rear to cement the big-tire theme. All that’s suspended with a Legend AirA kit at the back and one of Dupor’s own DD Custom setups for the front, a system able to slam the bike down onto an electrically-operated centerstand for show mode and then pump up to full suspension travel for on-the-road action. The engine set into all this received a full S&S Cycle *124inch package, and is augmented with a big cam, lots of head work and is finished with a *Trask Performance stainless steel Big Sexy 2-into-1 exhaust – a setup that checks off all the performance-bagger requirements. “It’s a monster,” Dupor says. A stickler for detail, all the custom covers added to the engine and transmission were powder coated with a wrinkle finish to match the OE cases and all assembly hardware – nuts, bolts and washers – were blacked out, as well.

Moving up on the bike a Ness Radial Fat Wrap front fender, and a Klock Werks The One frenched rear fender went on. Between them there’s a Yaffe Razor Back stretched fuel tank with a matching Drag Specialties EZ-On solo seat. The combination was coupled with the modified fairing that was dropped 3-inches on a DD Custom mount and Harley CVO saddlebags, which feature a 2-to-4 stretch front to back – a design that created the long, low profile Dupor was aiming for. SlyFox carbon fiber side covers painted with the number 7 (Dave’s number from his high-school and college sports days) filled in the look. Those are the broad strokes. There’s lots more going on here, starting with the ODI MX-style handlebars at the front and not stopping before getting to the Custom Dynamics sequential turn signals on the tail. It’s all listed in the accompanying Build Sheet. The takeaway, of course, is that virtually everything listed in that Build Sheet has a Drag Specialties part number, everything making this bike what it is is FatBook available. “I wanted to create something that anyone could duplicate,” Dupor says, “a full-custom requiring only imagination, careful thought and the Drag Specialties FatBook.” We’d say it’s mission accomplished, and then some. ■

TIRES

Capable Cruiser

A High-Tech Tire for V-Twins

Metzeler’s Cruistec tire combines the performance of the company’s sport touring tires with a beefy construction aimed at today’s high-powered V-Twin bikes.

T

here was a time when “performance tire” wasn’t something one heard in conjunction with heavyweight V-Twins. It was more of a term found on the sportbike side of things. Of course, there was also a time when V-Twins weren’t nearly as capable and nimble as they are today. Thankfully, modern designs and technology have combined to give us V-Twins that have all of the classic styling cues of a cruiser, plus performance characteristics that used to be reserved for other segments of motorcycling. Of course, a high-tech V-Twin needs a performanceoriented tire, which is where the Metzeler Cruisetec comes in. Metzeler designed the Cruisetec to deliver enhanced handling, grip and corner stability, making it an ideal choice for those riders who want a tire that can do more than simply cruise around. After all, riding a cruiser, Bagger or custom bike doesn’t mean you should be content on a straight road. While the Cruisetec tire is still relatively new, Metzeler’s history with motorcycle tires goes all the way back to 1892. The company broke into the V-Twin segment in 1999, when the Metzeler ME 880 tire made its debut. That means it took Metzeler more than a century from making its first motorcycle tire to finally designing a dedicated

V-Twin tire. The Cruisetec tire debuted in 2019, only 20 years after that first V-Twin tire launched. It seems like a very short time in comparison. When it came time to design a more high-tech V-Twin tire, the Metzeler designers turned to the German brand’s sport-touring tires for inspiration. If the Cruisetec profile looks like a close relative of the Metzeler sport-touring tire profiles, that’s no coincidence, though the sportier profile got a makeover to make sure the Cruisetec profile is meaty enough to support the heavier V-Twins it was designed for. The shape of the profile features a higher curvature than one would typically expect to find on a V-Twin tire. This steeper angle increases the handling capabilities of the tire, providing plenty of stability in a straight line as well as in those side-to-side transitions. The interior of the Cruisetec tire is also designed to give a V-Twin the support and cushioning it needs. The cords are stiffer, and there is more room for thicker rubber, which helps dampen the ride and reduce the floating feeling that riders can get when exiting turns under hard acceleration. Construction zones are no longer to be dreaded, since the internal structure of the Cruisetc nearly eliminates the tendency for a tire to wander when riding over grooved or other uneven surfaces. continued on page 32...

TIRES

P R O D U C T

No matter what style of V-Twin your customers are riding, all can benefit from the performance and longevity of Metzeler's Cruistec tires.

Meanwhile, the softer shoulder compound of the rear Cruisetec tire is formulated with plasticizers and silica to give riders high grip levels both entering and in the corners. High amounts of silica can also be found throughout both of the compounds in the rear tire, providing the chemical grip needed for fast warm-up and improved traction, even in cold or wet conditions.

On the outside, the Cruisetec features a tread pattern that looks right at home on a V-Twin while giving the tire improved mechanical grip. In all, the Metzeler Cruisetec tires are designed to maximize the contact patch for improved cornering grip, and they are versatile enough to perform well on standard models as well as those with ABS and traction control.

While all of these performance factors are important, it’s also necessary to have a tire that can last while remaining reliable. The rear Cruisetec tire is designed with long alternating grooves that are primarily designed to evenly distribute the pressure throughout the tire carcass. That way, the tire wears in a regular, even pattern across the entire surface. As the miles add up, the tire wears smoothly so the performance characteristics are maintained. Metzeler kept mileage in mind when designing the Cruisetec, and the tire will match or even slightly exceed the mileage a rider can expect from an OEM V-Twin tire. In other words, the improved performance doesn’t come at the cost of longevity.

The rear Cruisetec tire is packed with characteristics designed to boost performance and provide confidenceinspiring stability, no matter what the weather conditions might be. The features begin with the dual-compound rubber. The center compound, which includes a unique plasticizer, is an ideal formula for V-Twins, providing good longevity as well as improved grip, strength and stability during straight-line riding.

The front Cruisetec tire also has a unique tread, featuring diverging grooves that are designed for excellent water evacuation as well as improved braking efficiency. In fact, while the Cruisetec tire works well with any kind of braking setup, it works incredibly well with bikes that have ABS. Sometimes, when ABS is activated, the front end can chatter. The front Cruisetec tire helps reduce that chatter for a smoother braking feel.

METZELER

The Cruistec front tire features tread designed for excellent performance on wet roads and improved braking.

The Cruistec rear tire is built to handle the heavy weight of a V-Twin bike, and provide confidence-inspiring stability.

The grooves on the front tire are also carefully engineered so that the full/void ratio is increased at lean angle, which means more rubber is in contact with the road for even more grip through corners. As expected, silica can be found in the front Cruisetec tire, too, aiding with grip in wet conditions as well as faster warm-up.

for performance tires that can keep up with modern V-Twins. Metzeler continually receives positive feedback from dealers who appreciate how in-demand the Cruisetec is with their customers. Metzler continues to add sizes to fit a wide range of bikes, including options for riders who want to give their older bike a high-tech upgrade. ■

The Cruisetec has been popular with both riders and dealers since its debut, since there is such a high demand

All VO2 mounting brackets are made of strong, madein-USA steel. The Naked, especially, has an easy-to-install Black bracket that comes with Allen-head hardware and mounting instructions for DIY applications or for quick turnaround by your shop’s service department. Provisions also allow for the filter element to fit directly beneath the OEM air filter cover, or upgrade to a Vance & Hines Skullcap, should a bike owner choose to do so.

CAGE FIGHTER

The Cage Fighter, the newest addition to the VO2 line, features a stainless steel wrap-around bracket that’s available with a Brushed or Black finish, and comes with mounting hardware. This is the system that was used by the Vance & Hines entry at the 2020 King of the Baggers race. It offers great styling, with minimal weight and maximum breathing capabilities, and will no doubt be a favorite among performance Bagger owners this year, too. As the name suggests, this one’s for fighting!

VO2 Naked

W

hen Vance & Hines introduced the VO2 air intake system at Sturgis about 15 years ago, Harley-Davidson owners quickly recognized the advantages this bolt-on easy-install system offered their engines. The payoff was more efficient air intake for the engine, which typically spells more power. Especially for big-displacement, deepbreathing V-Twin engines. Buoyed by that early success, Vance & Hines has, over the years, expanded the VO2 line to include additional variations, offered at different price points. That’s good news for Harley owners and Harley dealers alike, because today there’s a VO2 system to fit practically every budget and every styling application. Currently, V&H offers five VO2 models, each with its own dedicated mounting bracket to fit Twin Cam, Sportster and Milwaukee-Eight models from 1999 through 2021. The five VO2 models include, in order of retail pricing, the Naked starting at $179.99, Cage Fighter starting at $259.99, and the X, Blade, or Rogue $419.99-&459.99. All models use similar washable filter elements that were developed and dyno tested by experts in the industry familiar with maximizing a motorcycle engine’s air intake capabilities. As with all Vance & Hines products, the VO2 is made at V&H’s facilities in Santa Fe Springs, California.

VANCE & HINES

X

When it comes to eye-catching styling, Harley owners have three more VO2 models to select from – the X, the Blade and the Rogue. Perhaps the most flamboyant in terms of styling is the X. As its name suggests, the billet cover features a prominent “X” in its design pattern. Installation is easy, and the kit comes with ARP bolts mounting hardware. Finishes include Chrome, Black or Black Contrast, making this a favorite among Harley owners looking for some added flash to their bike’s styling cues.

BLADE

VO2 X

Like the X, the Vance & Hines VO2 Blade is available in three finishes – Chrome, Black or Black Contrast. Its design pattern is slightly more subdued, using a single center piece that vertically bisects the entire center section for a symmetrical balanced look. ARP Mounting hardware is included for a quick and easy installation.

ROGUE

Chrome or Black finishes highlight the Rogue, and its single-radius arm helps give it a custom, yet lightweight appearance. As with all VO2 systems, the Rogue has been dyno tested for maximum performance, and it comes with ARP mounting hardware for quick and easy installation.

VO2 Blade

No doubt, the VO2 air intake line helps create a uniform package for any Vance & Hines-equipped late-model HarleyDavidson. Although each air cleaner kit adapts well to stock engine configurations, maximum performance gains are achieved when used with a fuel tuner, free-flow exhaust system and a remap. ■

Classic Carry-All

Saddlebags for T-Sport Style

For those customers building a Club Style or T-Sport, adding saddlebags that match that classic look is as easy as mounting up a set of Saddlemen’s new DXT saddlebags.

B

uilding a T-Sport or Club Style motorcycle is quite popular right now – or maybe “still popular” is the better way to put it – and finding the bags that originally came with Harley-Davidson’s sport-touring bike 20 years ago is next to impossible. Now Saddlemen is making the search a lot easier by offering a saddlebag that takes the original look of the T-Sport bags and elevates them with topquality materials and construction. The Saddlemen DXT saddlebags look similar to the original Harley-Davidson version at a glance, so mounting a set gives a Dyna or Softail an immediate T-Sport look. The original OEM bags were great to begin with, but Saddlemen figured they could make them even better. After all, Saddlemen has been building luggage for 30 years, so the company knows a thing or two about making saddlebags that can go the distance. Many of the improvements Saddlemen made are things a customer would probably never even notice, like the quality of the zippers and the construction methods. What customers will notice, however, is how well the DXT saddlebags hold up thanks to these updates. When it was time to

40

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2022

design the bags, the team at Saddlemen even took a look at potential failure points on the OEM design, so steps could be taken to avoid that with the Saddlemen version. Each Saddlemen DXT bag is made from a durable 1680d nylon, which is topped off with a premium leather top to provide both an additional bit of style and another barrier between the weather and the bag’s contents. The nylon resists UV rays and water, and it is paired with an injection-molded rear panel to give the bag a sturdy shape and mounting point. The DXT saddlebags are a versatile sport-touring luggage option thanks to the zippered expansion panel, which makes the bags great for both short and long rides. Even without using the expansion panel, each bag has 1890 cubic inches of storage space. When expanded, the saddlebag has a roomy 3150 cubic inches of storage space. In addition to the main storage compartment, the DXT saddlebag features a zippered outer pocket as well as a zippered inner pocket, which are both ideal for smaller items that need to be secure but easy to access. A built-in flap over the outer pocket creates another weather-resistant barrier.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

In addition to the flaps covering both the main compartment and the side pocket, Saddlemen designed the DXT bags with water-resistant zippers. That means the elements would have to get through two tough barriers to sneak inside. Riders who want an even bigger guard against the weather can opt for a rain cover, which is available separately. A saddlebag liner is available separately, as well.

The Saddlemen DXT saddlebags are just now available for sale, but riders at Sturgis were treated to an early glimpse of them. The Saddlemen team put a prototype set of the saddlebags on one of the display bikes at their booth. The crowd at Sturgis was enthusiastic about the bags. As far as Saddlemen is concerned, it all comes down to one important factor – if your customers are building a T-Sport style bike, then having the right saddlebags is an absolute must.

SADDLEMEN

Not only do Saddlemen’s DXT saddlebags offer the right look, they are built extra tough, with plenty of storage and with waterproof zippers.

Certainly, there’s a lot to love about the DXT saddlebags other than their looks. They are what so many riders are looking for, which is simply a quality set of functional bags. The mounting brackets bolt on easily, the bags are big enough for a lot of gear but not unwieldy and, of course, the quality materials give them the durability riders want. ■

» Talk with your Drag rep to learn more about the new Saddlemen DXT saddlebags as well as the other luggage options from the brand. You can find all of the styles in both the FatBook and the OldBook.

Customers will need to pair their DXT saddlebags with the correct mounting bracket. Saddlemen has one rigid-mount bracket kit that fits 1996-2017 Dyna models and another that works with 2018-2021 Milwaukee-Eight Softail models. With just two part numbers, Saddlemen is able to accommodate an incredible range of applications, which makes things a lot easier for dealers and saves space when it comes to stocking the kits. The mounting plates are black powder coated, and each kit arrives with all necessary hardware for installation. The kits are available separately from the saddlebags. When there is such a high demand for the T-Sport style of saddlebags, and with the enduring popularity of the club style, Saddlemen expects the DXT saddlebags to be a big seller. In fact, the early response has been extremely positive.

For the DXT bags, Saddlemen has one rigid-mount bracket kit that fits 1996-2017 Dyna models and another that works with 2018-2021 Milwaukee-Eight Softail models.

CARBON FIBER

The Road to a BRL Championship Racing on a Diet

The 2021 BRL Pro Stock Championship winning SLYGLIDE

View from the rear of the SLYGLIDE

While his primary products thus far are those Carbon Fiber body parts, Alex Fox has become a real student of weight reduction and using the new Bagger Racing League as his laboratory to learn about ways to take weight off Harley and Indian big twins. His Team SlyFox #9 motorcycle is called the “SLYGLIDE.”

F

or Alex Fox, the year 2020 could not have been a more perfect time for him to create his line of SlyFox Carbon Fiber fenders and other performance and weight saving components for Harley-Davidson Big Twins. “Performance Baggers” was just becoming the hot new category in the V-Twin market with machines that might not only have the latest sound and lighting upgrades, but also some serious motor work to increase the horsepower. The missing link in the power-to-weight ratio calculations, however, was that until the SlyFox Carbon Fiber line came out, nobody was taking any serious weight off those motorcycles.

42

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2022

Fox’s choice of number 9 is significant, by the way. His father, the late-Stan Fox, was not only the brother of LeMans Corporation founder Fred Fox, but also a professional auto racing driver back in the 1980s and 1990s. While he competed in eight Indy 500s, his legacy was as a top-notch driver in USAC and Badger midget racing, winning over 100 races in his career running #9 on his cars. Stan was inducted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1995. When the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race was announced in 2020, Alex arranged for some assistance from his friends at Saddlemen to build a “Racing Bagger,” which was ridden at Laguna Seca by Cory West. For 2021, Alex took his race program to a higher level. He put together a trackside arrangement with Joe Houpt of Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson, the dealership in Thiensville, Wisconsin who builds many of the Drag Specialties FatBook bikes featured in this magazine. Suburban’s deal included their rider, Benny Carlson, taking

over the reins of the SLYGLIDE for the 2021 BRL races and Houpt and his crew turning the wrenches. They were victorious at the seasonopening Pro Stock Bagger race in Salt Lake City, Utah last June. Since Alex lives in Southern California, he has also recruited the assistance of the Suicide Machine Company, a modern era “speed shop” in Long Beach run by Aaron and Shaun Guardado. In addition to fabricating some special racing parts, the Guardado brothers have been working with Alex to reduce the weight of the SLYGLIDE. According to Alex, just since the Utah race, they took 30 additional pounds off the bike with changes to the wiring harness and clutch. Altogether, the weight of the SLYGLIDE has been reduced from stock by 300 pounds!

SlyFox and Suburban Motors HarleyDavidson as Benny Carlson won the ICON Lite Weight and NAMZ Big Twins races for Suburban. He also repeated his Pro Stock Bagger success at Utah, which resulted in a 2021 season championship for Carlson and Alex Fox’s SlyFox team. As the winner of the Pro Stock Bagger race at Sonoma, Carlson was given a spot at the back of the grid for the final race of the day, the premier Bagger GP class. He then gave it his all on the SLYGLIDE and worked his way from the back of the pack to finish 4th in that race.

A happy Alex Fox with his championship plate.

LED LIGHTS

Amber Bullets

Dual Color Technology for Rear Signals

Custom Dynamics’ new SMART Amber/Red LED 1157 Bullet Turn Signals allow for both red and amber lights, and they provide enhanced illumination thanks to the premium LEDs.

C

ustom Dynamics likes to push lighting technology to new heights, though maybe “new brights” is the better way of putting it. The latest innovative lighting solution from the company is the SMART Amber/Red LED Bullet Turn Signal. Designed to fit 2014-2021 Harley-Davidson Street Glide, Road Glide and Road King models, including the Specials, these turn signals are anything but your typical bullet signals. Harley models in the U.S. come with rear 1157 bullet turn signals that function as a red running light, a red brake light and a red turn signal. The factory wiring is what allows one signal to serve three functions, but it is also what prevents the signal from being anything but red. Brake lights must be red, so that means the turn signal function is red, too. Custom Dynamics decided there was no reason for that limitation. The brand’s SMART Amber/Red LED 1157 Bullet Turn Signals allow for both red and amber lights. The red running light and bright-red brake light function as usual, but when the turn signal is activated, the entire LED cluster changes to a brilliant amber. Not only does the customer get the benefit of an amber turn signal, but they also get the enhanced illumination only premium LEDs can provide.

This color change is achieved with a patent-pending design that works via a plug-and-play controller included with each set of SMART bullet turn signals. The Custom Dynamics SMART Turn Signal Controller mounts under the bike’s seat and includes 10 built-in brake flash/strobe patterns. All a rider has to do is turn a dial on the controller to select their preferred pattern. In addition to controlling the bullet signals, the controller will also work with the Custom Dynamics ProBEAM Run/Brake LED TriBAR and any of the company’s dual-color or sequential LED lighting products. That way, all of the lighting patterns on the bike are in sync. Each SMART bullet turn signal consists of 48 ultra-bright LEDs. The LED cluster is completely sealed with an internal lens that magnifies the light output to produce a smooth, halo-free glow. Smoked lenses are included, too. The signals are DOT/SAE compliant, and, like almost all Custom Dynamics products, they are plug and play. Another thing these signals have in common with other Custom Dynamics products is the included lifetime warranty, which also covers the SMART Turn Signal Controller. ■

Built for long days, track days and every day Now more than ever, progressive builders and bikeriders are blurring the lines of what’s possible on a motorcycle. Not long ago, modifying a Sportster to go desert racing was unthinkable, something akin to dragging your knee on a bagger at Laguna Seca. Today, Dyna bros wheelie high-performance hogs like stolen beach cruisers. These shifts aren’t moments—they’re movements. Riders at the sharp end of the revolution have deep roots and eclectic tastes—everything from motocross and skateboarding to sport bikes and BMX. From these influences we mined the functional and aesthetic DNA to create three new gloves for two-wheeled adventure.

LUGGAGE

Load Up

Saddlebags Made for Exploring

The EXFIL-36 is the first full-sized saddlebag from Biltwell, and it is designed to be a go-to bag for utility and exploring.

P

icking the right motorcycle luggage system can be difficult. Riders have to weigh the pros and cons of all the available sizes, configurations, materials and price points, and it can be a tough decision. On the one hand, there are hard cases, but riders who want to strap extra gear onto them risk scratching the paint. On the opposite side of the luggage spectrum are pieces designed to get beat up, like Adventure boxes. Those options are rugged and probably look better the more scratches they have, but their styling doesn’t always fit with the aesthetics of a V-Twin. Biltwell thinks its EXFIL-18 and EXFIL-36 saddlebags fall right in the middle of those two options, providing exactly the right blend of ruggedness and looks. As a company that works hard so riders don’t have to, Biltwell offers the EXFIL luggage line as a chance for riders to pack up and hit the road with ease and complete confidence. Both of these new EXFIL saddlebags are handcrafted from ballistic-grade synthetic materials that keep their looks for a long time and have the durability riders want for their precious cargo. The 1680 denier material is UV-coated to resist fading and moisture, making it even more durable. Biltwell designs its motorcycle luggage to have a nearly universal fitment and to pair with a variety of aftermarket saddlebag supports, which means dealers don’t have

to stock a lot of different mounting systems. It also means riders with multiple bikes can easily transfer the EXFIL saddlebags from one to the other. The secret is the fully-adjustable mounting yoke with Velcro panels that provides a snug fit on any bike. After the ride, heavy-duty nylon zippers allow the bags to detach quickly. Biltwell designed the EXFIL saddlebags with Harley-Davidsons in mind, but the versatile fit means they can be paired with just about any other bike, too. The EXFIL-18 and EXFIL-36 are named based on an unconventional style of measurement. Forget liters or gallons: the numbers in the EXFIL names reflect how many 12-ounce cans each bag can hold. Both of the saddlebag options feature a main compartment, plus two exterior pockets for smaller items that need to be in easy reach. Biltwell is made up of a team of riders who know the kinds of things that make a long trip a little easier. That’s why the EXFIL-18 and EXFIL-36 both feature details like a hidden cable port that leads into the main compartment, making it easy to charge devices while underway. The exterior of each saddlebag is covered with MOLLE points, nylon loops and D-rings so additional accessories and gear can be securely attached. And, of course, there’s no need to worry that the attached gear is going to scuff up any paint.

The exterior of each EXFIL saddlebag is covered with MOLLE points, nylon loops and D-rings so additional accessories and gear can be securely attached.

The EXFIL saddlebags have a high-vis orange interior to brighten things up in there, making it easier to find even the smallest items.

Anyone who has ever had saddlebags knows the frustration of not being able to find something in a bag’s cavernous depths. The EXFIL saddlebags have a high-vis orange interior to brighten things up in there, making it easier to find even the smallest items. Additionally, EVA foam panels make sure the bags hold their shape at all times, even when empty. To top it all off, each EXFIL saddlebag comes with a waterproof nylon rain cover for those bad-weather rides. The cover stays securely in place thanks to elastic and a drawstring.

The EXFIL-36 is the first full-sized saddlebag from Biltwell, and it is designed to be a go-to bag for utility and exploring. Between the ample storage space and MOLLE webbing, a rider can haul a lot of things with these saddlebags. The heat-resistant canvas bottom adds to the durability. The exterior also includes a mesh document pocket under a waterproof flap. Inside the main compartment, three elastic mesh pockets, one vertical pocket and adjustable straps keep everything where it’s supposed to be. Longtime Biltwell customers will probably notice the resemblance between the EXFIL-18 and the EXFIL-7. The EXFIL-7 was the brand’s original utility bag, and it was a popular seller for years. When Biltwell got to work on the EXFIL-18, the goal was to pay homage to the silhouette of the EXFIL-7 while giving riders the added perks of the bigger size, more robust structure and additional features. ■

TIRES

An All-Star Cast

Professional Stunt Riding Requires the Right Tires Avon Cobra Chrome tires

Professional stunt rider Tony Carbajal counts on Avon’s Cobra Chrome tires to provide high levels of grip, predictability and longevity for his Indian Scout Bobber.

I

f Tony Carbajal’s name shows up on a call sheet for a movie, that’s a signal for the stunt motorcycle he’ll be riding to be outfitted with Avon tires. Avon Tyres is the brand Carbajal has trusted for years, from stunting sportbikes to getting sideways on Baggers. When Carbajal showed up on the freestyle competition scene, Avon brand reps witnessed his rise to fame on their own tires. Soon, they invited him to be an Avon Tyres brand ambassador. “We’d had some discussions about tire choices and what I was looking for in the tire,” Carbajal explains. “We just developed a relationship from there, and we’ve been working together ever since.” That was seven years ago, and since then, Carbajal has built a reputation as a rider who can push any motorcycle to its absolute limits. When Victory came calling, Carbajal and Joe Dryden teamed up to put on a show at The Buffalo Chip during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. As Carbajal and Dryden started planning the show, they realized getting the heavy V-Twins to do what they wanted was harder than expected. Until, at least, they mounted Avon Cobra Chrome tires. “We were trying to get these things to do wheelies and stuff so we could put on a show, and it wasn’t an easy task. The biggest thing that happened for us was changing the tires!” Carbajal notes. “Putting some good Avon tires on the bikes gave us more consistency and grip, and everything that we needed to start putting together a show. It transformed the whole program.”

50

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

Carbajal and Dryden eventually transitioned to stunting Indians, but the Avon Cobra Chrome tires remained part of the show. Today, Carbajal can often be found on his Cobra Chrome-equipped Indian Scout Bobber. For Carbajal, the Cobra Chrome tires provide the high level of grip, predictability and longevity necessary for stunt riding. “Having good grip is central to precision riding,” he says. “When you’re pushing around a 600-pound cruiser or an 800-pound Bagger, you have to have a lot of confidence in the front tire. I know not everyone is trying to push the limits in the same way we are, but it really shows what the capabilities of the tires are.” At Sturgis, Carbajal was performing six shows a day for nine days straight. That made tire longevity vital. Carbajal sums it up neatly: “Cobra Chromes let us focus on riding instead of changing tires.” Lately, Carbajal is staying busy as a motorcycle stunt rider. He shows off his super moto skills in Gemini Man starring Will Smith, and he was a motorcycle stunt double in Bloodshot starring Vin Diesel. He recently wrapped up filming Day Shift, a vampire movie with Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg. In all three of those movies, Carbajal’s bikes were outfitted with Avon Tyres, of course. ■

Clutch Performance

High-Quality Replacement Parts

W

hen it’s time to replace a Harley’s clutch, one brand comes to mind for many of your customers – Barnett. There is a good reason for this: Ever since Charlie Barnett established the family-owned company in 1948, Barnett clutches have maintained a solid reputation for their durability and reliability, and they’re made in the USA.

Each kit includes three sets of six coil springs, with three different spring pressures for a variety of pressure options to accommodate engines from stock to 250-plus horsepower. In many applications the light- or mediumpressure springs are sufficient for reduced hand-lever effort. Kits also include a steel inner hub, which means less parts chasing for the shop’s technician.

Barnett’s replacement and Scorpion upgraded clutch components and systems cover a wide range of Harley-Davidson models, from early Big Twins to today’s Milwaukee-Eight to Sportsters. Scorpion kits and components are available through Drag Specialties’ FatBook, making it quick and easy to order for customers’ bikes.

All Scorpion lock-up clutches are designed to fit stock baskets, and hydraulic versions are also available for a wide range of Big Twins and Sportsters.

S C O R P I O N C LU T C H B A S K E T S

Broken or defective clutch baskets for 2007-2021 Big Twins are not a problem thanks to Barnett’s Scorpion bolton clutch basket, made of high-strength billet aluminum. The Scorpion’s basket is considered among the most costeffective replacements for a Harley’s broken or defective stock basket. Precision machined from tough 2024-T3 billet aluminum that’s hard anodized, Barnett says this basket is superior in quality and durability to the stock basket. Installation is straightforward, too; simply remove the stock basket from the ring gear/primary sprocket, then bolt on the new Barnett Scorpion basket. All hardware and instructions are included.

Scorpion Low-Profile Lock-Up Clutch

SCORPION CLEAR DERBY COVERS

Seeing is believing, and Barnett’s Scorpion Series Clear Cover will make a believer out of anyone, because the clear cover gives a clear view of what’s happening behind the derby cover! The ¼-inch-thick polycarbonate window fits OEM primary covers for 1990-2016 HarleyDavidson Big Twins, 2018-2021 Softails and 2015-2021 FLs with “narrow” primaries. The window is scratch and discoloration resistant, and sealed with an O-ring gasket, and a derby cover gasket is also included. The outer cover is made of CNC machined billet aluminum, available in brilliant chrome or black powdercoat. ■

High-Banking Baggers KING OF THE BAGGERS DEBUTS IN DAYTONA

T

he 80th running of the Daytona 200 takes place March 10-12, 2022, and there’s a buzz in the air with the announcement that MotoAmerica will partner with Daytona International Speedway in an effort to breathe new life into the event that was among the biggest road races in the world. Not only does MotoAmerica’s involvement bring the promise of many of its established Superbike stars switching to Supersport machines to take part in the 80th running, it also means that the series is bringing with it a few of its other classes – including the Mission King of the Baggers. The Baggers will take to the high banks of Daytona International Speedway with speeds expected to exceed 160 mph – not once, but twice as the King of the Baggers Series will open its championship with a doubleheader at the World Center of Speed. MotoAmerica will also bring its Twins Cup class to Daytona and Roland Sands Design will hold the opening round of its Hooligans class during Bike Week at the Speedway.

“The Daytona 200 is known worldwide to be one of the most exciting motorcycle races in the world,” said MotoAmerica President Wayne Rainey, who won the 200 in 1987. “We are proud to work with Daytona International Speedway, the AMA and FIM North America organizations to continue to enhance the prominence of the Daytona 200. With the new Daytona 200 rules in place, we are hopeful that this will open the door to more manufacturers and teams joining us in March. It’ll be a great way to start off the 2022 season. And, wow, Baggers on the high banks. What a spectacle that will be. Obviously, this is MotoAmerica’s first trip to Daytona, and it’s my first trip back to the Speedway since 2008. I’m looking forward to what is going to be a really cool weekend.” The Daytona 200 will also be MotoAmerica’s first Supersport race featuring its new rules package for 2022. These new rules open the door to motorcycles such as the Triumph 765, Ducati Panigale V2, MV Agusta F3 and others to compete alongside the current Yamaha YZF-R6, Suzuki GSX-R600 and Kawasaki ZX-6R. The Daytona 200 will also continue to run as an “open tire” event, allowing multiple tire manufacturers to join the competition. Among the first of MotoAmerica’s stars to throw his helmet into the mix is 2013 AMA Superbike Champion Josh Herrin. Herrin has signed on with the Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati New York and his first race on the new Ducati Panigale V2 will be at Daytona. More team announcements regarding the Daytona 200 are expected soon. Nine World Champions, including seven 500cc/MotoGP World Champions – six Americans (Kenny Roberts, Freddie Spencer, Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey, Kevin Schwantz and Nicky Hayden) and one Italian (Giacomo Agostini) - have won the Daytona 200.

The Mission King of the Baggers expands to six rounds in 2022, and will appear at Daytona International Speedway in conjunction with the 80th running of the Daytona 200. Bryan J. Nelson photo

Mid-Length Muscle

A New 2-into-1 for Milwaukee-Eight Baggers

T

here’s a new Bassani Mid-Length Road Rage 2-into-1 for the Milwaukee-Eight Baggers. It has a new look, a new, even shorter length as well as a new, short and fat straight can “SB” muffler. (That “SB” is shorthand for SuperBike, much like the mufflers Darryl Bassani made back in the day.) Inside, there’s an all-new ProComp baffle with an all-new aggressive sound. The whole system is Tig-welded stainless steel, it’s available now and it’s exclusive to the M8 Baggers. Mid-Length 2-into-1s, neatly splitting the style difference between a Full-Length and Short system are a popular pick with Bagger riders. They just look right on these bikes. This newest stainless version brings an unmistakable performance feel and sound to an M8 bagger. It’s a style and a sound right in tune with the red-hot trends of the times thanks to that SB straight can muffler and stainless construction. There’s also a real, seat-of-the-pants performance boost coming with this new look and race-ready sound. Bassani’s Road Rage exhausts have been pure performers for years. Riders on just about every Harley-Davidson model have felt the punch from one of these stepped-header 2-into-1 systems. All that’s here in the new stainless Mid-Lengths for the M8s.

Bassani’s new Mid-Length Road Rage 2-into-1 for MilwaukeeEight Baggers offers those bikes a clean, aggressive look and plenty of the company’s well known performance.

True to Road Rage design the head pipes for this new system are equal length, albeit just that little bit shorter than the pipes on previous Mid-Length systems, and they’re stepped – starting at a 1¾-inch diameter, they open up to a big 17/8-inch size, before coming together into a special-design Bassani collector. This is a design long proven to enhance scavenging for an increased flow to deliver that big horsepower and torque boost for which 2-into-1s are known. Then there’s that new stainless 4-inch straight can SB muffler with the ProComp baffle. Short and stubby, it has the look of a no-fooling race-style piece of hardware. It’s a great capper to this new system, complete with its Bassani badge tack-welded in place. Completing things is a removable end cap with a Tig-weld accent making it look like its welded on, a weld perfectly mimicking the weld on the inlet side. ■

AIR CLEANER KITS

Optimizing Airflow

More Air and Gas in, Means More Power Out For customers with Milwaukee-Eight Harley-Davidsons, S&S designed the Air Stinger Stealth Air Cleaner kit to offer a 55 percent increase in airflow compared to the stock filter.

For your customers with Harley-Davidsons, S&S has designed the Air Stinger Stealth Air Cleaner kit, which offers an incredible 55 percent increase in airflow compared to the stock Harley air filter in a Milwaukee-Eight engine. This kit is designed to fit a variety of popular models, and is available with a mini teardrop cover in black or chrome, or a minimalist brushed-aluminum ring. The Air Stinger Stealth Air Cleaner kit is built off of S&S’s popular Stealth Air Cleaner, which features a pleated, washable and reusable air filter that offers more surface area for a 38 percent increase in airflow. Additionally, the kit includes an innovative “stinger” top plate with a tapered tail that helps reduce intake turbulence. The cherry on top of the whole engineering masterpiece that is the Stealth Air Cleaner kit is the radiused opening on the backing plate, which helps maintain intake air’s velocity as it makes a right-angle turn into the engine. Upping the ante on the already excellent Stealth Air Cleaner, the Air Stinger Stealth Air Cleaner kit replaces the tapered top cover with a similarly shaped air cleaner element. That means the Air Stinger not only maintains the assembly’s aerodynamic shape, it also allows air to pass through it, kicking the Stealth Air Cleaner’s 38 percent improvement in airflow up to a truly phenomenal 55 percent increase. With that much more air entering the engine, your customers have the potential to tune their bikes’ fueling to achieve substantial power gains.

F

or optimal engine performance – meaning smooth running, maximum power and crisp throttle response – an engine wants about 14.7 parts air to be mixed with one part gas. Stuff more air and fuel into an engine at approximately those proportions and you get more power. Simple enough, right? Well, there are lots of factors that can affect that ratio, and the most obvious are your customers’ air filters and fuel systems, since those components provide the two key ingredients for combustion.

Like the Stealth Air Cleaner, the Air Stinger is washable and reusable for years of use. The Air Stinger Stealth Air Cleaner kit is available for 2017 through 2021 MilwaukeeEight models, 2008 through 2016 Touring models, 2016 through 2017 Softail models, 2001 through 2017 Big Twin (except throttle-by-wire bikes), and 2007 through 2021 XL Sportster models. Kits are offered with a mini teardrop cover in black or chrome, or a brushed-aluminum ring. For those that already have a Stealth Air Cleaner installed, the Air Stinger components are also offered individually, so they can upgrade at any time. S&S has been in business since 1958 and offers quality performance products for all of the most popular Harley models. ■

Better Built Bagger

High-Performance Parts and Accessories Adding a pair of Race Weight wheels – in the Revolution or Assault design – is a great way to decrease unsprung weight on a Performance Bagger.

Progressive Suspension’s 990 Series remote reservoir shocks offer adjustable spring preload, adjustable rebound damping and high- and low-speed compression damping.

Performance Machine’s legendary custom brake calipers pair up nicely with a set of Race Weight rotors, both of which combine to provide precise, controlled braking.

PM recommends a set of 990 Series shocks from Progressive Suspension. These are legit race-grade shocks with adjustable spring preload, adjustable rebound damping and high- and low-speed compression damping, plus 0.4-inches of adjustable ride height. The 990 features a high-pressure monotube with deflective-disc damping routed through separate circuits for precise and consistent stroke control, and every shock is hand-built and comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

The wheels and shocks are a solid foundation, but bumping it up with front and rear Race Weight rotors to complement the wheels is easy to add-on to the initial parts. Offered in Dominator and Speedstar carrier designs, these Race Weight rotors feature CNC-machined stainless-steel discs mated to machined-aluminum carriers. The cross-drilled wave rotors are fully floating, allowing for better brake pad alignment and reduced distortion under heavy use.

On the topic of brakes, that’s one of the benefits of stepping ever further with Performance Machine’s legendary radialmount calipers as well as a set of Race Weight Mid Controls.

Performance Machine recommends a set of Race Weight wheels front and rear in the Assault or Revolution spoke styles, as well as a set of Progressive Suspension 990 Series remote reservoir shocks. Variable lengths are available.

The Race Weight Mid Controls offer a far more aggressive riding position that provides substantially more cornering clearance for deep lean angles at the track. These mids are made from 6061-T6 billet aluminum, and once again, are machined down to the bare minimum to save maximum weight. ■

aggers aren’t just for cruising or stunting anymore, you can take them to the track! If your customers plan to compete on their Baggers, they’ll need a bike that’s been adequately equipped. Performance Machine has the answer with its Performance Bagger Parts, which include highperformance equipment developed by PM for its own endeavors at the track.

The Race Weight wheels are machined from forged aluminum for the ultimate in strength and lightness, and PM has even back cut the rim lip to reduce weight where

it matters most. At the center of the 11-spoke Assault wheels or split-spoke Revolution wheels are Raceline Series hubs that are machined down to the bare minimum required to support the axle and brake rotors. Cutting weight from rotating, unsprung components is one of the best ways to improve a bike’s overall handling, and these Race Weight wheels are pounds lighter than stock hoops.

Performance Machine’s brake calipers have a stellar reputation, and are machined from aluminum with four pistons doing the squeezing. These calipers offer optimal disc-to-pad alignment and all but eliminate flex, resulting in powerful and precise brake control.

Relocation Kits for Ultras and Street Glides

With LA Choppers’ mirror relocation bracket kits, Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic and Street Glide customers can reposition their stock mirrors for better rear-view vision.

L

A Choppers continues to push the envelope when it comes to designing and manufacturing new, cutting-edge products for Harley-Davidson motorcycles – a range of parts and accessories that continues to grow and change with market demand. The R&D team at LA Choppers works tirelessly on new product development, always looking for holes in the market that can be filled with the company’s unique and functional offerings. Once again, the team really nailed it with the new LA Choppers mirror relocation bracket for Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic and Street Glide models. Most dealers and customers know that when installing an aftermarket set of handlebars on an Ultra or Street Glide, the stock mirrors are pretty much rendered useless. That is until LA Choppers introduced this mirror relocation kit! The kit simply drops the OEM mirror down 3½ inches, providing a clear view of the road behind the rider. The mount itself is made of aluminum, and is powder coated gloss black. There are no logos or emblems on the mount, allowing for it to disappear into the fairing. The goal with this kit was to make it look as if the bike could have come straight from Milwaukee with it installed. No longer does the customer need to purchase mirrors that mount onto the stock controls. Instead, this ultra-clean relocation kit retains that OEM look, while also keeping functionality. Installation is simple – remove the front of the fairing, allowing for access to the hardware that holds the stock mirror onto the bike. Install the mirror onto the bracket using the OEM hardware, as well as the hardware included in the kit. Then simply install the complete mirror and bracket assembly onto the fairing.

The LA Choppers’ mirror relocation kits are a great solution when Ultra and Street Glide riders upgrade to a pair of aftermarket handlebars. The kit drops the stock mirror down 3½ inches.

Installation time is estimated to not take more than 30 minutes – a timeframe that results in happier customers looking for a quick and affordable upgrade to their bikes. Not only do the savings come from less shop tech time, but the entire kit retails for $138.95. ■

DIXIE RUN: 15TH ANNIVERSARY DRAG SPECIALTIES DEALER RIDE

I

t started happening all over the world as pandemic concerns abated – friends gathered with exuberance and fresh appreciation for the value of relationship.

Such was the spirit at the Dixie Run, the 15th running of the Drag Specialties Dealer Ride held annually – except for the 2020 pandemic postponement – in early November 2021 in Point Clear, Alabama. Traditionally, the Drag rides have brought together participating vendors, dealers and road reps to distinctive settings around the country for epic riding, product intel and camaraderie. This one was a milestone, not only because of the 15-year mark and pandemic release, but also because of who was – and wasn’t – there. Yes, it was a time for renewal, but also reflection. Emcee Rob Buydos, known for provoking response from an audience, wanted to know, “Who has attended before?” (A little less than half ). “How many times?” (Five and six were common numbers) And had anyone but him, John Potts and Tom Motzko been to all 15? (No!) To those who’ve attended any of the prior Drag dealer rides, something else was notable; a pivotal person was missing, Drag Specialties National Sales Manager Jim Matchette. Jim, who passed away unexpectedly in June, had been the spearhead of the Drag dealer rides from their inception and he was much on everyone’s minds. Along with LeMans Corporation Event Manager Kathy Sommervold, Matchette worked to move the dealer rides around the country, finding locations with suitable accommodations and proximity to stellar riding roads. The first one, in 2006, was held in Rapid City, the next near Asheville, North Carolina. Over time they became based in ever more opulent facilities in singular locales such as Texas Hill Country, the Adirondacks and the Ozarks. The 2021 ride was based at the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa, overlooking Mobile Bay. Often referred to as the Redneck Riviera or L.A. (Lower Alabama), it’s infused with sea grass, xxxxxxxxxx cotton fields and gracious, southern hospitality. It’s also steeped in history, one of the reasons, Sommervold noted,

that Matchette had picked it. “He was so impressed with the history of this place, he couldn’t wait to share it.” Dating from 1847, the Grand has survived war, fires, the Depression and hurricane Katrina. It was a hospital during the Civil War and a secret military training facility during WWII. It fit the bill perfectly for this event as riders met up for Performance Alley on Saturday evening where vendors provided generous swag and knowledge. The next two days were for riding. One of the planned routes toward Mobile suggested a stop at the USS Alabama battleship, docked in the harbor adjacent to a hanger of historic aircraft. Some riders stopped there and stayed for hours. Others continued south toward islands attached to the mainland by roads mere inches above the water’s edge, ending at sand dunes and seafood huts. If you’re wondering what draws dealers to the Drag ride year after year, Jan Knobbe from Chariots of Fire Customs

NOVEMBER 13-16, 2021 / POINT CLEAR, ALABAMA in Troy, Missouri had an answer. “This is the only time we can be together to network and share secrets of the trade,” Knobbe said. “It’s huge to talk with the vendors. We get tidbits and information, and our customers benefit from that. You can’t sell what you don’t know.” ‘California Phil’ Sudduth of Concordia, Kansas, who runs a small one-man shop, has been to several rides. “It’s beneficial to see and meet industry people,” he said. “Even small shops like

mine can qualify and no one else has an army of road reps like LeMans. I’ve had several reps over the years and they have all become lifelong buddies.” Echoing the community aspect, Gail Worth of Gail’s Powersports in Kansas City, said “We as an industry need to get together to grow. Everyone helping each other out no matter what brands we represent.” This was her first dealer ride and Worth resolved to come again.

Vendors enjoyed the opportunity to tout new products and advance company news. Megan Barrett from Custom Dynamics said, “It’s a family affair, a family reunion,” recalling a Drag ride image of a group of vendors that appeared in the Drag Specialties catalog one year. Said John Potts of Vance & Hines, “This is where the engagement happens, where the business happens, at smaller events like this.” Drag’s Vendor Development Manager Tom Motzko likes talking with the dealers and the employees they bring. “It’s the nature of business that the day-to-day can take over. We can forget why we got into this industry to begin with,” he said. “Times like these remind us of that. And the opportunity to spend some downtime with guys like Darryl Bassani? That’s something to tell your co-workers about when you get home!” Thinking of attending? Get ahold of your Drag rep pronto. The 120 dealer spots sell out within a week of the ride being announced at the NVP each year. See, the people who work at Drag are riders, too. They get it. LeMans Vice President of Sales Jeff Derge summed it up: “We all bust our butts day and night, and at the end of the year we gather here, remembering why we do what we do, and taking a few days together enjoying it.”

Tour Box Pads for Premium Comfort

Drag Specialties tour box pads offer an extra dose of comfort for passengers on long rides.

L

ong rides can lead to stiff bodies and sore muscles, but they don’t have to. There are plenty of ways to settle in and get comfortable in the saddle, even on those cross-country rides. Drag Specialties Seats adds an extra layer of luxury with its line of tour box pads. Drag has tour box pads to fit both standard and chopped tour boxes. The standard tour box pads are designed to perfectly match both Harley-Davidson Tour-Paks and Drag Specialties Tour Boxes. Not only do these pads mount neatly to the box, but the automotive-grade vinyl covering is also a perfect match for OEM seat coverings, resulting in a seamless look. Some of the tour box pads also feature solar-reflective leather in the contact areas. The patented process used to make this leather reduces the surface temperature by as much as 25 degrees Fahrenheit. The solar-reflective leather does more than simply keep a passenger’s back cool on a summer day. It also keeps the seat looking good for a longer time: the solar-reflective properties give the leather higher durability and longer life compared to conventional leather or vinyl. Underneath the cover, a molded urethane foam gives the tour box pad its contoured shape while offering maximum comfort. The shape is designed for clean lines and a precise fit, but convenience is important, too. The armrests are a standard length, which means the pad is easy to mount and remove. The Drag Specialties tour box pads are available in a range of styles. The black vinyl can be finished with the usual mild stitch or smooth stitch. Bolder options include

double diamond and pillow style. The double diamond stitching is now available with silver, red or black thread, letting riders opt for a pop of color, if desired. Drag designed the chopped Tour-Pak backrest pads to provide ample back support in a smaller amount of space. This is achieved in part with a high-density foam interior, and like the larger pads, some options include the solarreflective leather. The chopped Tour-Pak backrest pads are available in smooth and pillow style finishes, as well as the double diamond stitching with silver, red or black thread. When it comes to fitments, Drag Specialties hasn’t forgotten older bikes. There are backrest pads designed to fit 19861998 King Tour-Paks as well as King-style tour boxes. There are chopped Tour-Pak pads available for older models, too. Like the rest of the products from Drag Specialties Seats, these tour box pads are all made in the USA. ■

Upgrades for a Stock Transmission

H

arley-Davidson does a lot of things right, but one thing it has struggled with is transmission design. From harsh shifting to an elusive neutral and other issues, Harley’s transmissions occasionally leave something to be desired. That created an opportunity for Baker Drivetrain, which has a laser focus on manufacturing fully optimized 6-speed and 7-speed transmissions and associated components. Born from the genius of a senior transmission engineer at General Motors, Baker’s DD6 6-speed transmission is a huge upgrade for pre-2006, 5-speed Harleys, and now features a polished-aluminum trap door. For the newer Twin Cam and Milwaukee-Eight bikes, Baker is proud to offer its DD7 7-speed gearbox, which incorporates all the technology Baker has developed during more than 30 years in business. Both the 6-speed and 7-speed gearsets offer an additional ratio, but that extra gear isn’t the result of “more is better” thinking. Rather, it’s the result of a realization that the power output of Harley’s V-Twins isn’t being served by the stock gear count. The extra gear enables Baker to revise all the ratios so your customers’ motorcycles can make full use of their torque and power, with quick and continuous acceleration in the lower gears and relaxed cruising in the upper gears.

TRANSMISSION PRODUCTS

Get It in Gear!

On top of that, a laundry list of engineering innovations allow Baker’s transmissions to surpass the OE design in nearly every way. Loud bang and jarring clunk when shifting? That’s due to the OEM mainshaft’s excessive mass and sloppy tolerances at the dog teeth. Baker’s mainshafts are lighter, reducing rotating weight for gentler, quieter gear engagement. The dog teeth and pockets are also improved, with reduced radial tolerances and a 1-degree chamfered edge that smooths engagement and helps pull corresponding gears into full mesh for quicker, more precise shifts. Neutral is often difficult to find on a Harley, even on the latest Milwaukee-Eight engines, but Baker rectifies that issue with a host of improvements. That includes a lighter shift drum with a pronounced neutral position machined into the detent clover leaf. Baker’s 6-speed and 7-speed transmissions also make use of an automotive-style linear detent spring that offers more control than the stock scissor-spring and leverwheel design used in the stock gearset. Baker Drivetrain components are proudly engineered and built in the USA, and available for a variety of models as complete kits and individual components. ■

HIGHWAY BARS

Raising the Bar

Taking Highway Bars to the Next Level

Lindy Custom has introduced the innovative, patent-pending adjustable footrest. It’s easy to adjust the footrest position, making it ideal for dialing in a custom fit.

H

ighway bars and footrests serve an important function, but that doesn’t mean they have to look functional. Lindby Custom knows the right design can be both durable, and add to a bike’s styling. With five different highway bar designs available, Lindby Custom gives customers the look they want, as well as the peace of mind that their bars are extremely tough. Riders can take things a step further by adding Drag Specialties lowers designed specifically for Lindby bars. And, for riders who want ultimate adjustability in foot placement, Lindy Custom has just introduced the innovative, patent-pending adjustable footrest. It’s easy to adjust the footrest position, making it ideal for riders of different heights. The 1¼-inch steel tubing is incredibly durable, and the replaceable, bonded rubber footrests guarantee traction and comfort. The adjustable footrest is available in triple-chrome plated or a two-stage powder coat finish. Lindby uses a two-stage powder coating method to give its products a thick, rich coat. The Linbar is the original patented design from Lindby Custom. Available as both front and rear bars, these bars show off what makes Lindby such a popular choice. The high-strength steel tubing is precision bent and welded to ensure a perfect fit, and it is then either triple-chromeplated or black powder coated for a beautiful finish. The Linbar has wide neoprene O-rings to provide traction, no matter what the weather might be. The front Linbars are made from 1¼-inch steel, while the rear bars are 1-inch in diameter and fit with most stock exhausts. For riders who want something a little stouter, the Magnumbar is an amped-up Linbar. The style and O-rings are still there, but this time on 1½-inch steel tubing. The Twinbar front highway bars are both engine guards and highway pegs. The sleek design pairs 1¼-inch steel tubing with flip-down pegs. The Twinbar is available in a triple-chrome plated finish.

Wiring Solutions for Harley-Davidsons

T

he world of V-Twin custom culture is one that knows few limitations. From tweaking and tailoring details on a factory platform to fabricated, ground-up builds, the custom potential of Harley-Davidson-based builds have provided customers a platform to express their two-wheeled passion. Eye-catching paint, head-turning exhaust and anodized billet components all play important aesthetic roles, but there is much more under the surface that makes a custom possible. The crew at NAMZ Custom Cycle Products are no strangers to the inner workings of custom builds, which is why the company offers a line of wiring products intended to make the lighting aspect of your customers’ projects go quite a bit smoother.

ELECTRICAL PRODUCTS

Harnessing the Power

With the popularity of LED technology, lighting plays a big role in both show and function, and NAMZ knows firsthand few things are more frustrating than trying to figure out custom wiring. Thankfully, the company has taken out the guesswork with its wiring harnesses. The NAMZ Plug-N-Play rear fender wiring harnesses are made for 2010 to 2013 Road Glide and Street Glide models, as well as 2014 and up Road Glide, Street Glide and Electra Glide models. These wiring harnesses come complete with an OEM-fitting, 6-position Molex connector that attaches under the left side cover, and a 12-position connector that connects into the tri-bar light in the rear fender fascia. Dynas, Softails and Sportsters are also covered with PlugN-Play offerings, featuring the necessary connectors to match OEM, attaching under the seat and into the rear taillight circuit board. NAMZ even matches the OEM wiring color codes for easy installation. A popular custom mod for earlier generation Road King, Road Glide and Street Glide customers is adapting a late model rear fender fascia. NAMZ makes this adaptation simple with a rear fender harness adapter designed specifically to give this modification plug-in and go functionality. NAMZ knows late model riders want to customize their machines too, so they have 2018-and-up Softail riders covered with a replacement rear fender harness that allows for the use of custom taillights with integrated turn signals on FXLR/S models. From beginning to end, NAMZ wiring harnesses are made in the USA at the company’s Pennsylvania facility, and are designed to provide simple, plug-and-play functionality for your customers’ lighting customization jobs. ■

Premium Shocks for Milwaukee-Eight Softails

Legend Suspensions’ REVO-A Softail Mono Coil shock provide your customers with a plush riding experience, and better resistance to bottoming out for an overall more comfortable and controlled ride.

P

art of what draws riders to Harley-Davidson’s iconic Softail models is the rigid look, but with only about 3½ inches of travel and limited adjustability, the rear suspension certainly leaves something to be desired. That’s where Legend Suspensions comes in with the highly refined, fully custom REVO-A Softail Mono Coil shock for the 2018 through 2021 Milwaukee-Eight Softail models. With one of these shocks installed, your customers will experience more plushness and better resistance to bottoming out for an overall more comfortable and controlled ride. The REVO-A Softail Mono Coil makes use of more than two decades of experience building custom suspension. To that end, the shock has a beefy chrome-silicon spring in standard or heavy-duty rates, and a 46mm billet-aluminum body that receives a black Type III hardanodized finish. Within the shock body, the real magic happens. Legend has implemented an advanced Sandvik Deflective Disc valving system to control damping. This design is rate sensitive, so it’s able to react differently to sharp, fast hits compared to bigger and slower loads. That makes for controlled damping on a variety of riding surfaces, whether your customers are dodging potholes in the city or carrying speed on a twisty back road.

Legend Suspensions’ REVO-A Softail Mono Coil shock also utilizes a true monotube design to provide responsive and consistent damping control. A floating piston within the shock body separates the damping oil from the pressurized nitrogen, which all but eliminates the foaming and cavitation that can plague shocks when they’re cycled rapidly. Furthermore, the monotube approach allows for a larger piston, so damping response is quicker and more precise. With the new REVO-A Softail Mono Coil, your customers also have the opportunity to adjust the damping, which isn’t a feature found on their bikes’ stock shocks. With the turn of a knob, riders can choose between seven pronounced damping settings to dial in the setup that’s right for them. The REVO-A Softail Mono Coil also has easily adjustable spring preload to accommodate different rider weights and scenarios, and is available in both a standard spring rate weights under 350 pounds, and a heavy-duty spring rated for more than 350 pounds, a great option for those who regularly carry a passenger. Compared to the stock shock, the new REVO-A Softail Mono Coil is a massive upgrade that will benefit your customers every time they ride. By updating their bikes with Legend Suspensions components, your customers will be benefiting from 20 years of experience and getting American-made components that come with a true lifetime warranty. ■

Riser Assemblies and Other Accessories

T

he feeling of riding a motorcycle is not just a factor of power and speed. It’s a culmination of many finer details too, including the actual touch, sights and sounds of sitting on the bike, controls in-hand. Most of your customers ride to their own unique style and they set up their machines as such, so it’s that same feeling every time they fire it up. Living for that experience themselves, the crew behind Joker Machine has developed a line of USA-made billet handlebar risers and clamps carefully detailed to deliver not only the unique feeling your customers are looking for, but a custom touch as well.

Joker Machine’s all-billet aluminum Dual risers offers your customers a control upgrade that not only looks great, but also saves weight.

Riser assemblies from Joker Machine are available in standard rise and pullback designs. Each assembly is fully CNC-machined from 6061 billet aluminum to achieve substantially higher tensile strength over some OEM cast components. Strategically placed machined cutouts and lightening holes give Joker risers a key weight advantage while maintaining strength.

PARTS & ACCESSORIES

Machined-Billet Style

The Series 900 riser assemblies feature a single-piece, lightweight top clamp combining strength, functionality, and a custom look all in one.

For customers that prefer a unique style, Joker’s pullback riser assemblies feature a 2½-inch rise with a 1½-inch pullback. For those looking for direct height, they can choose from 2-inch or 4-inch options. Whichever configuration they prefer, your customers have a variety of finish and style options. One option is a Dual riser top clamp design, simply offering two separate handlebar clamps, one fitted for each riser. This can help achieve that unique café racer or simplistic look and feel. For something with a bit more billet-machined stylizing, Joker’s Bridge and Series 900 riser assemblies utilize a single-piece, lightweight top clamp combining strength, functionality and a custom look all in one. Regardless of Dual or Bridge preference, your customers can further match the style of their machine with anodized black or chrome-plated options. Each Joker riser assembly also includes special gold zinc clamp mounting bolts as an added touch of style and function. Joker risers are tapped for the common Harley-Davidson ½-inch by 13 riser mount bolt size and are designed for 1-inch diameter handlebars. Even if your customers have 7/8-inch bars, Joker offers sleeves to adapt and allow for the use of their assemblies.

Pullback risers

Joker Machine’s celebration of customization doesn’t end at riser assemblies. The same detailed design and USA-made quality is applied throughout the company’s decorated lineup of billet offerings and other components for Harley-Davidson and other V-Twins. From levers, throttle tubes and mirrors to foot controls, air intake, engine covers, and even lighting solutions, Joker Machine is a single stop for customers looking for everything from finishing touches to the complete custom service. ■

Race-Ready Oil Flow

A

motorcycle oil pump’s primary function is to regulate engine oil flow, which affects oil volume and pressure to the internal moving parts. Also, a pump must efficiently scavenge and return oil to the tank reservoir for storage and cooling before recirculating to the engine. That led Feuling Parts to develop two high-performance oil pump kits – HP+ and RACE SERIES – for Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight air- and liquid-cooled engines. The kits were developed at the racetrack where Feuling Parts competes in Bagger Racing with the team’s own Milwaukee-Eight-powered racer – piloted by seasoned rider Ben Bostrom. Both high-performance oil pump kits are suitable for street use as well. Racing proved the importance of scavenging oil from the M8’s sump to maintain

low oil level (by 50 percent), reducing hydraulic drag on the rotating flywheels. To do that, Feuling enlarged the oil pump reservoirs and the critical oil passages, and matched the oil port holes throughout the cam-plate to the port holes in the engine case. This further increased oil flow to the lifters, piston cooling jets, crankshaft and rod bearings. Feuling also updated both oil pump back covers to incorporate a groove that accepts the OEM pump-to-crank bearing seal associated with standard M8 oil pumps, further helping control oil scavenging issues normally associated with the factory M8 lubrication systems. ■

Power Boost

JE’s forged performance pistons provide a performance boost for MilwaukeeEight engines.

S

mall details make a big difference. That’s the thinking behind JE’s performance forged pistons. The combination of materials, design and even manufacturing processes results in pistons that give Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight engines an instant performance boost. Designed for a range of bore sizes and compression ratios, these pistons are made from a premium 2618 aluminum alloy. The alloy helps save weight while providing superior tensile strength. The pistons are created using a full-round forging design for strength through excellent grain flow. JE also utilizes a proprietary design technique called radiused side relief, which removes excess base material in a way that reduces weight without sacrificing strength.

The JE engineering team spent a lot of time fine-tuning the details of these pistons. The accumulator groove was carefully designed to offload unburned combustion gas, preventing ring flutter. Another detail is the double broach pin oiler, which enhances lubrication and oil film distribution across the piston pin joint. The improved lubrication reduces friction and wear and, of course, increases durability. The piston skirt is coated with a low-friction dry film lubricant, which reduces friction while enhancing the fit and performance of the piston. The piston pin is offset to provide the ideal geometry between the piston, crank and connecting rod. This precise design reduces piston rock. ■

ptiMate battery chargers have been on the market for 27 years and since those first products were released, the range has expanded to include a myriad of active models.

The SILVER range are the smarter options that are still automatic, but can also save neglected “dead-flat” batteries, such as the OptiMate 3. The GOLD standard range includes advanced chargers with selectable modes. These automatically save, charge, test and maintain, and include the OptiMate 6 SELECT. The LITHIUM range is specifically for LFP lithium (Lithium Ferrous Phosphate) batteries, and includes the OptiMate Lithium 4s 0.8A.

With so many options from which to choose, OptiMate’s parent company TecMate has launched a program that categorizes the charger range into six categories. These categories not only present Good, Better and Best options, but also divvies up the range based on how riders will use the chargers, and on which battery platform or platforms. The categories of options include – BRONZE, SILVER, GOLD, LITHIUM, OFF-GRID, and PRO. BRONZE – OptiMate 1 DUO

For example, the BRONZE lineup includes the easy-to-use chargers, general connectand-forget charging and maintenance devices. These include the OptiMate 1 DUO and the OptiMate 2 DUO.

For those who need to charge when OFF-GRID, there is the OptiMate Solar DUO 10W charger for lead-acid and LFP lithium batteries. The PRO line is aimed at powersports dealers and includes the OptiMate PRO-1 DUO. ■

A Show-Worthy Rotor for Performance Braking

T

here is a lot of science that goes into a brake rotor, but Galfer is the brand that actually shows off the science. The CUBIQ® rotor for V-Twins has eye-catching hexagon styling that was designed like that for a lot more than just the dramatic look. For one thing, the rotor resembles the crystalline structure of a steel molecule. The angular design of the CUBIQ rotor is also carefully engineered to provide optimal braking performance. Using the latest technology, Galfer engineers created a rotor design with an ideal mass-heat dissipation ratio to enhance cooling. The result is Galfer’s lightest, highestperforming rotor to date. V-Twin riders are already familiar with the popular Galfer WAVE® rotor, and the CUBIQ rotor is the next step in that style’s evolution. The CUBIQ rotor is designed to be just as capable as the modern V-Twins they are built for, meaning it is a high-performance, predictable rotor that gives V-Twin riders ultimate confidence in their braking setup. Of course, the CUBIQ rotors don’t just resemble steel molecules, they’re actually laser-cut from a proprietary alloy

Galfer’s dramatically styled CUBIQ rotors are designed for optimal performance and a unique look. It is the company’s lightest and highestperforming rotor.

of unrecycled 420 stainless steel and parallel double-disc ground to ensure absolute precision. The design and the steel combine to create a rotor with outstanding cooling properties as well as reduced weight compared to OEM rotors. In all, the CUBIQ rotor is a high-performance brake rotor that stops precisely and consistently, while also improving maneuverability thanks to the reduced weight. ■

Ending Clutch-Hand Fatigue

F

or more than a quarter of a century, Müller Motorcycle has been engineering parts to make Harley-Davidsons perform better. An incredible amount of design and functionality goes into every part, no matter how small that part might be. The Hydro Clutch is so small that it doesn’t even show once it’s installed, but it makes a big difference when it comes to clutch operation. The Hydro Clutch is designed to fit Twin Cam, V-Rod and Milwaukee-Eight models that are outfitted with hydraulic clutches. Its primary function is to reduce hand fatigue in riders. For Twin Cam models, this little part results in a 35 percent reduction in the force required to engage the clutch lever. It’s even better on Milwaukee-Eight models, reducing the force required by a massive 45 percent. What that means for riders is that scenarios that require extensive clutch use – like sitting in congested traffic – don’t have to result in cramped fingers and tired hands anymore. Even the general fatigue of riding a bike with a stiff clutch becomes a thing of the past, including on large-displacement bikes.

Müller Motorcycle’s Hydro Clutch reduces hand fatigue in riders on both Twin Cam and Milwaukee-Eight models.

The Hydro Clutch replaces the OEM inner and outer ramp assemblies, and once installed, it is completely hidden. Customers who ride Evo, Twin Cam and MilwaukeeEight models with a mechanical clutch can get the same benefits with the Müller Motorcycle Power Clutch. ■
