What Is a Ketogenic Diet?

Dr. Carolyn Dean A ketogenic diet focuses on a low-carbohydrate intake and a high fat intake, which often results in weight loss and other health improvements such as controlling blood sugar levels and diabetes.

he ketogenic - or keto - diet is based on high fat

intake,

replacing

carbohydrates

in

the diet with fats. A dramatic reduction in carbs puts the body into a state of ketosis, which

is when the body burns fat for energy, rather than carbs. When the body is in a state of ketosis, the liver turns fat into ketones, which supply energy for the brain – with the reduction in carbohydrates causing significant reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. A ketogenic diet includes high-fat meats, fish, nuts, oils, low-carb vegetables and high-fat dairy produce, such as cheese. Foods that are high in carbohydrates should be eliminated, which includes pasta, rice, bread and baked goods, as well as legumes, root vegetables, highstarch vegetables such as potatoes and most fruits.
