Nutrition: Top Tips for Healthy Eating

A healthy diet is part of a healthy lifestyle. Changing the way you eat can make you feel better, both physically and mentally. Here are some top tips to help you choose the right foods.

Protein

Protein is essential for long-term health. Choose lean proteins such as fish, beans, nuts and poultry for the best effect.

Carbohydrates

Some of us have been conditioned to believe that carbohydrates are unhealthy. While some can be bad for you, adding whole grain carbohydrates such as brown bread and brown rice to your diet is actually good for you.

Fats

There are good fats and bad fats, and we all need to include some fat in our diet to stay healthy. Stay away from trans fat and limit your intake of saturated fat, while increasing the amount of healthy fats you eat from sources such as fish, nuts and plant oils.

Fruits and Vegetables

The key with fruits and vegetables is to eat the rainbow – choose as many different colors as possible each day, including greens, reds, yellows and oranges.

Vitamins, Minerals and Specialty Nutrients

Vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients that perform hundreds of roles within the human body – and there are at least 30 vitamins and minerals that the body needs but cannot manufacture on its own in sufficient amounts. Furthermore, we are often unable to get enough nutrients from eating alone, which is where supplements can help.
