B vitamins including thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, biotin, folate, and cobalamin all help a variety of enzymes within the human body to perform important functions, ranging from breaking down amino acids and releasing energy from carbohydrates and fat to transporting oxygen and nutrients around the body.

B vitamins are crucial for healthy brain function, supporting neurological and physiological functioning. They help to counter chronic fatigue and stress, as well as protecting against various types of cancer, reducing the risk of developing the skin cancer melanoma in particular.

Most B-group vitamins cannot be stored by the body, making it important to consume adequate amounts. Excess alcohol consumption and extended food processing and cooking have all been shown to reduce or destroy many of these B-group vitamins.

Folate in particular is very important, supporting production of red blood cells, as well as cell growth and DNA synthesis. Women of childbearing age in particular are advised to consume a diet rich in folate to avoid neural tube defects in infants.
