What is Intermittent Fasting? D r Ca r o ly n D e a n Intermittent fasting is a diet that revolves around periods of fasting (no consumption of food) and eating on a regular schedule. Intermittent fasting has a number of advantages, including weight loss and management, as well as the prevention - and in some cases, the reversal of some diseases.

For example, some decide to only eat during an eighthour period each day. Others may choose to fast for two days out of every seven, eating
just one meal a day on their ‘fasting’ days – which is often referred to as the ‘5;2 diet’. A diet based on intermittent fasting is effective because after many hours without food, the body exhausts its sugar stores and starts to burn fat instead. The prolonged periods of fasting allow the body to burn the calories that have already been consumed before starting to burn fat stores - as opposed to constantly topping up the calories that are readily available to the body.
