High expectations for new Fasig-Tipton July sale format By glenye Cain Oakford The select yearling auction season kicks off at Fasig-Tipton’s Kentucky headquarters July 15, and this year there’s a bonus. Immediately following the yearling session, Fasig-Tipton will offer a new auction: the summer sale of selected horses of racing age. With this sale, Fasig-Tipton is attempting to establish a new tradition of selling an estimated 50 to 65 “horses with meaningful racing potential to showcase to the sport’s leading buyers,” as chief executive Boyd Browning describes it in the auction’s promotional material. It might seem a bold step to launch a select racing-age sale at a time when yearlings traditionally are in the limelight, and at a place that does not have a training track for the racing-age stock to show off their abilities. But Browning and Bayne Welker, Fasig-Tipton’s vice president for sales, said the market is ripe for such a racing-age outlet, and that the company’s detailed online catalog will give bidders plenty of ways to assess a runner’s performance. If this initial July racing-age sale is successful, Fasig-Tipton officials plan to keep it on the calendar, Welker said. “It’s been on the table for a couple of years now, and it came about for a couple of reasons,” Welker said of the racing-age auction. “There had been a lot of client input to having a sale devoted to horses in training. There had also been a push to have it at a different time of year so that people who wanted to liquidate horses – either because they didn’t meet the standards of their racing stable or because somebody who just had a horse that they wanted to turn into cash and was quite a hot commodity – would have the opportunity to do so. “Traditionally, the only time format available in the public marketplace has been the fall sales. And with the increased amount of activity that was going on in the private marketplace because of the Del Mar Ship and Win program, there were a lot of external factors that pointed towards July.” Del Mar’s Ship and Win program has piqued interest in proven runners based outside California. Owners who start a runner at Del Mar who last ran out of state are eligible for two alluring incentives: a guaranteed $1,000 payment just for starting the horse in a Del Mar race, plus a 33 percent bonus added to the horse’s purse earnings from its initial Del Mar start. “If you’re in the racing game, there is a very healthy market out there for a fit and ready racehorse [who is] ready to be able to go back to the races in, say, weeks or a month,” Welker said. “There’s a strong desire to have those.”
Fasig-Tipton’s barn area in the days leading up to the auction. But auction-house officials said that even though bidders won’t be watching the horses work over a racetrack, they’ll have access to thorough information at Fasig-Tipton’s website – including race videos, results, and workouts – as well as catalog pages and pedigree updates. “On that website, they’ll have the ability to see all the races and all the past performances, and they’ll be able to pull up Ragozin numbers and a summary being done on each horse by Daily Racing Form,” Welker said. “I think most horses in this day and age are gauged by numbers, and all that information is going to be put out there. What’s left is, how are they physically made? You’ll be able to see them on the end of the shank and see how they walk. The performances for most of these horses have been established, so you’ll be able to know what level they’re able to compete at.”
and yearlings, too

Yearlings sold for an average of $81,291 at last July’s sale, up 16 percent from 2011.
With a vigorous private market, what’s the incentive for sellers to bring their racehorses to a public auction in Kentucky? There are several, according to Browning and Welker, starting with the protections an auction’s conditions of sale can provide for both buyers and sellers. “The money, the vetting, the administrative difficulties that are inherent in the private marketplace are solved by the sales company,” Browning said. “We’re used to processing and handling transfers of ownership, collecting the money, paying the money. There’s a high level of confidence in the repository in terms of
the veterinary procedures. It’s a process everybody’s comfortable with.” Welker also points to the competition factor: When two or more bidders lock horns over a prized horse, anything can happen, and most of the time, that is good for the seller. “What we’ve seen historically, over and over, is that emotion often plays a large part in the auction process, and when you have that between two bidding competitors, you’re often going to receive a higher price than you possibly would in the private market.” The racing-age horses, like the yearlings, will only be shown at a walk in
In the meantime, of course, FasigTipton’s barn area will be showcasing the summer’s first select-auction yearlings. Browning and Welker hope there will be some “cross-pollination” between the markets, with trainers and their clients checking out both the young and the racing-age stock. Even if that crossover is limited, company officials have a sunny forecast for both their July sale and the broader select-yearling season. They have some reason for their optimism. Last year, the select-yearling auctions generally posted average and median prices that were either level with 2011 or up, sometimes by double digits, and so did several important regional sales. Fasig-Tipton’s July sale remained level with its 2011 median of $60,000, but the average climbed 16 percent, even though the catalog was 12 percent larger than in the previous year. The company’s small, highly select Saratoga auction endured a rougher ride, as buyers and sellers alike responded to an apparent change in market mover Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum’s buying habits. After losses on the sale’s opening night, the second session rocketed up, but the two-day sale still ended with an average price lower by 6 percent and a median price down by 10 percent in what was widely regarded as a one-off situation. Keeneland’s long September yearling sale saw gains at its reformatted select session and for the 11-day auction overall, including a record-equaling median of $45,000. This year’s spring and early-summer juvenile sales consistently produced gains, some of them double-digit increases. That bodes well for the yearling-to-

juvenile resellers, called pinhookers, who often shore up returns at select-yearling sales as they look to restock their inventory for the following year’s 2-year-old auctions – although they also will have been affected by a highly polarized market with high withdrawal and buyback rates that, for many consignors, made selling a feastor-famine enterprise. But those who profited are likely to add stability to this year’s yearling auctions. “In all yearling markets, the role of the pinhooker certainly has a bearing on how well the yearling markets do,” Welker said. “The better the pinhookers do, the better the overall health of the yearling market is, from top to bottom.” The annual Thoroughbred foal crop is still falling, which helps to increase competition for a smaller supply of select horses. “The reduced supply has helped move
the market into hopefully a higher category, and I think confidence is higher in the United States economy and the world economy, so there’s more willingness to spend money,” Browning said. “And I think people feel pretty good about the horse business right now as well. We would anticipate the positive momentum of the 2-year-old sales to continue into the yearling sales cycle.” Welker believes that improved confidence is likely to translate into incremental growth as buyers cautiously up their budgets, but Browning also noted that bidders probably will remain highly selective – and that could mean 2012’s high buyback rates could continue, especially if sellers place aggressive reserves on their stock. Browning and Welker don’t see major obstacles to healthy domestic spending, particularly at the top of the market. A
diverse upper market of U.S.-based buyers was a hallmark of last year’s auction season, which also saw less aggressive spending by two of the U.S. market’s traditional titans: Darley Stud (whose owner, al-Maktoum, is a close associate of the Dubai company that owns Fasig-Tipton) and Coolmore Stud. “When you see prices come down out of the stratosphere, it gives those who have always thought they can’t play at that level the ability to step up and try to obtain what are perceived as the top offerings,” Welker said. “You get more people in at a higher level than they’ve probably thought about being in the past.” If those factors line up again at FasigTipton July, both the yearling market and Fasig-Tipton’s new racing-age market could benefit, getting the summer auction season off to a positive start.

A line of his own JOHN P. SPARKMAN The victory of Trading Leather, by Teofilo, in the Group 1 Irish Derby on June 29 expanded the burgeoning reputation of Teofilo’s sire, Galileo, as a sire of sires. But the victory of Ambivalent, by Authorized, in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at The Curragh the following day may herald similar implications for Galileo’s chief rival, Montjeu, as the world’s best sire for the last decade. Ambivalent’s Pretty Polly score followed close on the heels of the victory by Treve, by Montjeu’s son Motivator, in the Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks), and calls attention to the growing success at stud of the first two of Montjeu’s four Epsom Derby winners. Montjeu retired to Coolmore Stud in 2001 at a fee of only 30,000 euros, but when Galileo followed him to stud at Coolmore in 2002, that horse’s initial fee was 100,000 euros. The big difference in stud fees was entirely a reflection of the perception of their pedigrees, since Montjeu possessed the superior race record. Montjeu was a stakes winner at 2; Galileo was not. Both had won European derbies at 3, but Montjeu won the more prestigious Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, while Galileo captured the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Montjeu added three more Group 1 wins at 4, including a King George, while Galileo was already collecting stud fees at that age. Montjeu and Galileo were the two best racing sons of 14-time leading English sire Sadler’s Wells, but the female half of their pedigrees were not considered equal, though both were undeniably high class. In the eyes of Europe’s best breeders, the key differences were that Galileo’s dam, Urban Sea, had won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at 1 1/2 miles, and her sire was the sprinter-miler Miswaki, by speed influence Mr. Prospector, while Montjeu’s dam, Floripedes, had won the Group 3 Prix Lutece at almost two miles, and her sire, Top Ville, was a sire of stayers. Those differences have to some extent been reflected in the performances of Montjeu’s and Galileo’s offspring. Montjeu has sired six juvenile Group 1 winners to Galileo’s eight, but all of Montjeu’s top juveniles required distances of a mile or more at 2, while several of Galileo’s good 2-year-olds won Group 1 races at seven furlongs. None of Montjeu’s juvenile Group 1 winners has shown the brilliance of Frankel, New Approach, or Teofilo. Thus, it is not surprising that breeders’ preference for Galileo over Montjeu has carried over to their sons. And there is not the slightest doubt that the early achievements of Galileo’s first two Group 1-winning 2-year-olds, Teofilo and New Approach, outstrip those of Montjeu’s first two, Motivator and Authorized. Trading Leather’s Irish Derby win followed 2013 classic victories by New Approach’s son Dawn Approach in the 2000 Guineas and Talent in the Epsom Oaks, while Treve’s French Oaks win was the

first for a Montjeu stallion. It was Treve’s sire, Motivator, who first put Montjeu on the map as a sire. From Montjeu’s first crop, Motivator capped a two-start, two-win juvenile season with an easy victory in the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy in 2004. Motivator trained on at 3 to provide Montjeu with the first of his four Epsom Derby winners but failed to win in three subsequent starts, though he ran honorably when second in both the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes. Treve (out of Trevise, by Anabaa) is Motivator’s second Group 1 winner from Motivator’s first three crops, following 2012 Group 1 Prix de l’Opera winner Ridasiyna (Ridafa, by Darshaan), who was the highweighted filly on the European Free Handicap last year at 3. In fact, six of Motivator’s eight group winners and 11 of his 16 stakes winners to date are fillies. Such gender imbalances tend to even out over a sire’s career, but early ratios frequently result in “filly sire” labels that do young stallions no favors. Motivator’s dam, Out West, by Gone West, was a stakes winner at a mile in England, from the great American family tracing to the fast juvenile stakes winner Lady Be Good, a family that has produced several brilliant milers in Europe. Out
West also produced Motivator’s Group 2-winning full brother Macarthur and stakes winner Imperial Star, by Fantastic Light, earning English Broodmare of the Year honors in 2005. Motivator’s daughter Treve also is from a distinguished European family with American roots. Treve’s half-brother Trois Rois, by Hernando, won stakes in France, and their dam, Trevise, by champion sprinter Anabaa, is a full sister to American stakes winner Tsigane. Treve’s second dam, Trevillari, by Riverman, is a full sister to Group 1 winner Treble, and her third dam, Trevilla, by Lyphard, was a half-sister to the brilliant Triptych, by Riverman, a winner of nine Group 1 events. Treve’s fourth dam, the massive American-bred mare Trillion, by Hail to Reason, was a champion in France and America and is a tail-female ancestress of Group 1 or Grade 1 winners Tawqeet, Tamarisk, and Amorama. Authorized duplicated many of Motivator’s feats two years later. A winner of the Racing Post Trophy in his second start at 2, he became Montjeu’s second Epsom Derby winner at 3 but did better than Motivator subsequently by winning the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes. His dam, Funsie, by Saumarez, was unraced and produced nothing else of note
but hails from one of the best families in Europe over the past five decades, that of the American-bred mare Ampola, by Pavot. Francophile American breeder Gertrude Widener raced Ampola’s daughters Polamia, by Mahmoud, and Sly Pola, by Spy Song, in France, and their daughters vastly expanded one of the best families in the Stud Book. Ampola’s descendants include champions and/or classic winners Grey Dawn II, Zagora, Sulamani, Dream Well, Right Away, Alhaarth, Makfi, and Green Dancer. Funsie’s dam, Vallee Dansante, by Lyphard, was a half-sister to French classic winner and leading sire Green Dancer, by Nijinsky II. Funsie is a half-sister to three stakes winners, including Group 3 winner Brooklyn’s Dance, by Shirley Heights, the dam of six stakes winners, including 2012 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Solemia, by Poliglote. Brooklyn’s Dance’s daughter Brooklyn’s Storm, by Storm Cat, also is the granddam of 2012 French highweighted juvenile filly Silasol, by Monsun, who trained on to win the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary this year and finished third behind Treve in the French Oaks. Vallee Dansante’s daughter Krissante, by Kris, is the dam of French highweighted 2-year-old Okawango, by Kingmambo, while another daughter of Vallee Dansante, Quest of Fire, by Rainbow Quest, is the granddam of German and Italian highweight Quijano, by Acatenango. Ambivalent is Authorized’s first Group 1 winner, and she, too, has a pedigree to match with American roots. Her dam, the stakes-placed Darrery, by Darshaan, already has produced jumps stakes winner Made in Japan, by Barathea, and two stakes-placed runners. Darrery’s winning daughter Diary, by Green Desert, is the dam of Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp winner Total Gallery, by Namid, and the stakes winner Tempest Fugit, by High Chaparral. Ambivalent’s second dam, the Americanbred Flamenco, by Dance Spell, captured the Group 3 Waterford Candelabra Stakes. The family arrived in America in the 1960s via the Chilean champion Aysha, by Forest Row, and has produced a steady stream of stakes winners without producing anything of special merit. Both Motivator and Authorized could use a high-class colt to really put them on the map with breeders, and both have 3-year-old colts who just might do that. Motivator, who moved to the Head family’s Haras de Quesnay this year, is the sire of Sky Hunter, who ran third in the Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby) in his fourth start. Authorized’s promising son Sugar Boy won the Group 3 Bet365 Classic Trial Stakes but pulled up very sore when finishing a disappointing last behind Trading Leather in the Irish Derby. Despite his disappointing campaign so far this year, Montjeu’s fourth Derby winner, Camelot, is certain to be given a superb opportunity at stud and is likely to have the best chance of extending his sire’s male line. Until that day comes, though, Motivator and Authorized still have the chance to come up with the “big horse” that defines a young sire’s career.

Square Eddie making a mark with small first crop

Square Eddie returned from a suspensory injury Jan. 14, 2011, to win an allowance race and set a Santa Anita Park track record for 6 1/2 furlongs with a time of 1:13.11.
By Steve andersen The success the young stallion Square Eddie has with his first crop of runners this year has a homemade feel. When Square Eddie went to stud in early 2010, there was nominal interest from outside breeders, owner Paul Reddam recalls. Reddam raced Square Eddie for most of his career and backed the stallion with his own mares that first year. “The first crop is pretty much mine that I bred to him,” Reddam said in late June. “There are a couple of outside horses.” Already, Reddam has been rewarded. Square Eddie got his first stakes winner when Sprouts won the $100,250 Cinderella Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Betfair Hollywood Park on June 15. The filly’s win has given Square Eddie the early lead among California’s juvenile stallions, ranked by progeny earnings. Through Monday, Square Eddie’s prog-
eny had earned $139,380. He had two winners from his first four runners, including Smoove It, a filly who won a $52,000 maiden special weight race at five furlongs in her second start at Hollywood Park on June 29. “So far, so good, for sure,” Reddam said. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the way things are going.” Square Eddie, a 7-year-old by Smart Strike, had 33 foals in his first crop in 2011, according to Jockey Club statistics. For his second crop, Reddam again strongly support the stallion with his own mares. According to The Jockey Club, Square Eddie had 31 foals of 2012. He was bred to 45 mares that year. Reddam, best known for winning the 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness with I’ll Have Another, raced Square Eddie for most of his career, which included 3 wins

Continued from page 5 in 18 starts and earnings of $856,019. On the track, Square Eddie was among the highestrated horses in his age group in the winter of 2008-09 but was plagued by minor injuries. In the fall of 2008, Square Eddie arrived from England following a second in the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes on the synthetic track at Kempton Park. He quickly made a favorable impression, winning his U.S. debut in a 9-1 upset in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland in October 2008. Square Eddie was the 7-2 favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita later that month but finished second by 1 1/4 lengths to Midshipman. Square Eddie went into the winter season as a West Coast contender for the Triple Crown but had an interrupted campaign. After finishing second to The Pamplemousse in the Grade 3 San Rafael Stakes at Santa Anita in January, Square Eddie was sidelined with a cannon-bone injury. If his racing career had ended then, Reddam said, Square Eddie would not be standing at stud in California. “When he got hurt at the beginning of his 3-year-old season, if he’d been retired at that time, he would be standing in Kentucky,” Reddam said. “He was a Grade 1 winner at 2, second in the Breeders’ Cup, and by Smart Strike.” Reddam and trainer Doug O’Neill tried desperately to have Square Eddie ready for the 2009 Kentucky Derby. The colt finished third behind Advice in the Grade 2 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland in April 2009 and was a candidate for the Kentucky Derby until the days before the race, when his soundness became too great of a concern. Heat had been detected in a shin. Square Eddie did not race again until the fall of 2009 and was winless in four stakes in the final three months of the year. After a suspensory injury was detected in early February 2010, Square Eddie went to stud at Vessels Stallion Farm in Bonsall, Calif. Without the lateseason success in 2009, Reddam found he was the primary supporter of the stallion. Later that year, the suspensory injury was reassessed, and a decision was made to put Square Eddie back in training with O’Neill. He returned to racing at Santa Anita in January 2011 and had a memorable return, winning an allowance race at 6 1/2 furlongs by 3 1/4 lengths in trackrecord time of 1:13.11. Square Eddie did not win again in five subsequent starts, including three Grade 1 races, to end his career. Square Eddie stood for a fee of $5,000 in 2013. He is one of two notable freshman stallions of 2013 standing in California by Smart Strike, joined by Papa Clem, a multiple stakes winner. Smart Strike, a former leading stallion, is best known as the sire of Curlin, the Horse of the Year in 2007 and 2008 and sire of this year’s Belmont Stakes winner, Palace Malice.
Sprouts gives Square Eddie his first stakes winner, capturing the Cinderella Stakes at Hollywood Park in June.
Square Eddie is out of Forty Gran, an El Gran Senor mare who was stakes-placed at Churchill Downs and Ellis Park. With a small crop, Square Eddie will need continued success from his runners to remain at or near the top of the state’s first-crop stallion list. Reddam said Sprouts, trained by Ed Freeman, will run in the $100,000 California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Stakes at Del Mar on July 19. Though the breeding season is over, Square Eddie’s recent winners could lead to support from breeders other than Reddam in 2014. “A lot of people have been asking,” Reddam said. “People took notice.” Reddam said the stallion’s progeny who have raced this year do not represent all the promising runners in his first crop. “He has two or three others,” he said. “I’ve gotten excited. We have the first crop, the yearlings, the babies, and the mares in foal. I feel like we took a chance, and we’re in a good spot.”

Centralinteligence, under Victor Espinoza, wins the June 29 Triple Bend Handicap to become the first Grade 1 winner for his sire, dual classic winner Smarty Jones.
By Patrick reed The result of last week’s Grade 1 Triple Bend Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park brought satisfaction to astute handicappers who selected 8-1 shot Centralinteligence and watched the 5-year-old gelding pull away to a 3 1/2-length victory. It did not take long, however, for a secondary wave of enthusiasm to rise following Centralinteligence’s first stakes win, as remarks disseminated throughout social media celebrating the first Grade 1 winner for 2004 champion and dual classic winner Smarty Jones. Centralinteligence, a hard-trying West Coast-based runner with some nice performances in the allowance ranks during 2011 and early 2012, missed almost a year of racing due to knee chips following a sixth-place finish in last year’s Triple Bend. The gelding returned with a fourth-place finish in a five-furlong stakes at Hollywood in mid-May, then improved
to second behind Comma to the Top in the Grade 3 Los Angeles Handicap at six furlongs May 27. Stretched out again to seven furlongs in the Triple Bend, Centralinteligence powered past pacesetter Comma to the Top in midstretch and won going away in 1:21.57, posting a flashy 108 Beyer Speed Figure. It is not surprising to see a wellspring of support for Smarty Jones, who remains a very popular horse among racing fans. Superior horses emerge each year, and some remain at top form long enough to draw interest and even affection from casual fans and the general public, but Smarty Jones stirred something more. His achievements in the spring of 2004, and the storylines behind his connections, place the Pennsylvania-bred son of Elusive Quality in the company of Zenyatta, Rachel Alexandra, Barbaro, and Funny Cide as the most popular North American

hot sire Continued from page 7 racehorses of the young century. Centralinteligence was bred by Patricia Chapman, who, along with her late husband, Roy, owned and bred Smarty Jones at their Someday Farm in New Hope, Pa. Smarty Jones’s rise from Philadelphia Park (now Parx Racing) and his dominance in Oaklawn’s prep races for the Chapmans and trainer John Servis in the spring of 2004 gave him an underdog aura that built on the success of his 2003 predecessor, Funny Cide, and the popularity of the Hollywood movie “Seabiscuit,” released in the summer of 2003. Smarty Jones’s commanding win in the Kentucky Derby and his thorough demolition of the Preakness field fueled a dizzying media whirlwind and set the stage for a record crowd at Belmont Park on June 4, 2004. The events of that day created a lasting memory for those in attendance when the crowd’s ear-shattering roar as the horse turned for home was silenced in an instant after the rallying Birdstone swept to the lead inside the final sixteenth. Smarty Jones never raced again after his only defeat, retiring in August after veterinarians diagnosed chronic bruising in his ankle joints. It can be argued that the amount of public interest in horse racing that swelled during the weeks between the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Belmont has not been matched since. Syndicated for a reported $39 million, and with the Chapmans retaining majority ownership, Smarty Jones began his stud career in 2005 at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky. Smarty Jones’s pedigree played a role in his outsider status; his sire, Grade 3 winner Elusive Quality, by Gone West, was well regarded at the time but hardly elite, and his dam, the Smile mare I’ll Get Along, was a multiple stakes winner on the Mid-Atlantic circuit who was early in her broodmare career. Smarty Jones (aided by a $5 million bonus from Oaklawn owner Charles Cella) made Elusive Quality the leading North American sire by earnings in 2004, and the
stallion has gone on to enjoy international success, being represented by Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Raven’s Pass, top European filly Elusive Kate, Grade 1 winner Quality Road, and Australian champion Sepoy, to mention a few. A lot of factors come into play in the formation of a successful stud career, but the bottom line, as with everything in athletics, comes down to performance, and it is safe to say that Smarty Jones’s initial foals did not meet expectations when they hit the racetrack. He only had two Grade 3 or Group 3 winners – Gilded Gem and Keiai Gebera, the latter in Japan – from his 2006 crop, although Be Smart did finish second in the 2008 Grade 1 Alcibiades at Keeneland. His second crop included Backtalk, the winner of the Grade 2 Sanford and Grade 3 Bashford Manor as a 2-year-old in 2009 and a colt who held a lot of promise heading into his 3-year-old season. Backtalk did not build on that success, although he remained a useful runner through his last start in 2011. He now stands at Bridlewood Farm in Ocala, Fla. Centralinteligence is from Smarty Jones’s third crop, which includes solid Grade 3 winner Rogue Romance and Australian-bred Better Life, a dual champion in Singapore. Following the 2010 breeding season, Smarty Jones returned to his native state and stands for a fee of $7,500 at Northview Pennsylvania, a division of Northview Stallion Station, while shuttling to Uruguay. Centralinteligence’s dam, the unraced Seattle Slew mare Shootforthestars, has produced seven other winners, including the Grade 2-placed General Consensus, the stakes-placed Golden Rainbow, and My Elusive Star. Shootforthestars is out of the Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed Lotta Dancing, by Alydar, who also has produced Super Derby winner and sire Fantasticat. Given Centralinteligence’s improvement since his return to racing for trainer Ron Ellis this spring, the gelding has a solid chance to add to both his own résumé and that of his sire in the months ahead.
Smarty Jones stands for a $7,500 stud fee in his native Pennsylvania.

Catching up with dancethruthedawn
Mare haS Big ShOeS TO fill By Nicole russo Few horses in modern history, both on the racetrack and in the breeding shed, have faced higher expectations than Dancethruthedawn. The Sam-Son Farms homebred was well regarded from birth as the first filly out of 1991 Canadian Triple Crown winner and prolific broodmare Dance Smartly, who was among the most decorated runners to emerge from the operation’s foundation family. By the time Dancethruthedawn entered the starting gate for the 2001 Queen’s Plate, the bar had been set even higher, as her full brother, Scatter the Gold, had captured the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown a year before. Dancethruthedawn achieved her destiny that afternoon, carrying Sam-Son’s crimson and gold colors to victory in the classic. A Sovereign Award winner and an inductee into her home country’s Hall of Fame, Dancethruthedawn has returned to her birthplace to build on her family’s legacy as a broodmare at Sam-Son in Milton, Ontario. Like the rest of the Sam-Son broodmares, Dancethruthedawn made the trip to Kentucky to be bred this spring, as the operation boards its mares at Hill ‘n’ Dale near Lexington and at Creek View Farm, a division of Ashford Stud, near Paris. After getting in foal, the mares return to Ontario to deliver the following spring so the resulting offspring will be eligible for Canadian-bred stakes and incentives. “[Dancethruthedawn is] doing great,” Sam-Son broodmare manager Dave Whitford said. “She’s back home, and she’s out with her buddies – some other mares who are open this year, not nursing mares. Most are back from Kentucky now. We foal everything in Ontario, obviously, for the Canadian Fund program. That’s our main focus – the Queen’s Plate is still our main focus. Once the foals are at least two weeks old, or right around three weeks, we ship the mare and the foal down to Kentucky so the mares can be bred back to stallions down there.” Dancethruthedawn, a daughter of Mr. Prospector, won seven of her 16 career

A stakes winner and Grade 1-placed as a juvenile, she blossomed in the spring of her 3-yearold campaign, capturing the Woodbine Oaks. Just two weeks later, she held off the favored Win City by a half-length to capture the Queen’s Plate. In the process, she became the fourth filly to complete the Woodbine Oaks-Queen’s Plate double, joining Flaming Page (1962), La Lorgnette (1985), and her own dam, Dance Smartly. Inglorious achieved the feat in 2011. Dancethruthedawn went on to finish second to Win City in the Prince of Wales Stakes, the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. She continued her career with an assault in the United States the following season, winning the Grade 1 Go for Wand at Saratoga and the Doubledogdare at Keeneland and placing in three graded stakes. She exited the Grade 1 Spinster that fall with a nondisplaced fracture to her right leg, which ended her racing career, and she joined Sam-Son’s broodmare band. These days, the assertive presence that marked Dancethruthedawn as a top racemare is still very much in evidence. However, Whitford said the mare is easy to work with. “She’s a little bit of a loner,” Whitford said. “She sort of likes to stay to herself in the herd. She’s very sweet; [there’s] not a mean bone in her body. She’s very friendly and wants to come up for a mint or a carrot at every opportunity. She is great to do any kind of work with – the farrier, the vet, reproductive care, vaccines, you name it. She’s a sweet girl, and she stands her ground with the rest of the herd. She doesn’t take any non-

sense.” Dancethruthedawn hails from the fourth generation of Sam-Son’s remarkable foundation family. The operation’s founder, the late Ernie Samuel, purchased the mare’s third dam, No Class, by champion and leading sire Nodouble, for $25,000 at the 1975 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society yearling sale. Stakes-placed herself, No Class went on to produce champions Sky Classic, Classy ‘n Smart, Regal Classic, and Grey Classic, as well as Grade 1 winner Always a Classic. Classy ‘n Smart, in turn, produced Dance Smartly, along with Grade 1 winner and promi-

dancethruthedawn Continued from page 9 nent sire Smart Strike, Grade 1 winner Full of Wonder, and Grade 2 winner Strike Smartly. Dance Smartly, Canada’s Horse of the Year in 1991 and a divisional Sovereign Award and Eclipse Award winner, was inducted into both the Canadian and U.S. Halls of Fame. As a broodmare, she produced, in addition to Dancethruthedawn and Scatter the Gold, Grade 2 winner Dance With Ravens, the Grade 3-placed Dance to Destiny, and the stakes-placed Dance Brightly. With the exception of Dance With Ravens, a son of A.P. Indy, all were by Mr. Prospector. Two of Dance Smartly’s daughters, Dancethruthedawn and Dance to the Sea, by Gone West, are current members of the Sam-Son broodmare band. “Incredibly, No Class is responsible for 10 mares in our broodmare band of 25,” Whitford said. “She’s still a huge influence in there – by far the most influence of any family in our broodmare band. We have to go through mares every year and decide who stays and who goes. There are fillies coming out of the racing stable that might bump somebody, or someone is retiring and gets replaced. It’s a revolving door.
“We’ve sold a lot of [daughters of] No Class, a lot of race fillies through the years. We’ve obviously kept as many of the No Class line [as possible]. With 10 mares strong, we have kept a lot of them. It’s always been a difficult decision. You never want to give away the golden goose. But the family has been very, very good to us.” Dancethruthedawn’s own breeding career has been somewhat unlucky. From five foals to survive to racing age, including a current juvenile, the mare has produced just two starters, both winners. One of those, Dark Cloud Dancer, started in the 2010 Queen’s Plate, but the Storm Cat colt could manage only sixth. “He had some ability and showed some promise early in his career, but it didn’t materialize,” Whitford said of Dark Cloud Dancer. “You would hope a racemare like Dancethruthedawn would have produced some serious runners by now. She was a Grade 1 winner at Saratoga, a Queen’s Plate winner, everything you want in a race filly. But she’s been a little unlucky in her reproductive career. She’s had some losses and some other foals that have not made
it to the racetrack, unfortunately.” Now 15, Dancethruthedawn was not bred for a 2013 foal after delivering late last season; unfortunately, her resulting Medaglia d’Oro foal died at seven weeks old. The mare is in foal to twotime Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and WinStar Farm stallion Tiznow on an early cover. “We just felt very strongly that Tiznow was a fantastic racehorse,” Whitford said of the pairing. “His progeny are proven to train on at 3 and 4 years old, and he gives us our best chance at the classic type of distance we’re looking for here – a mile and a quarter for the Queen’s Plate, that’s the type of horse that we love and cherish and want to breed to. And he does work very well with the Mr. Prospector-line mares and the Storm Cat-line mares.” Dancethruthedawn’s daughters also are beginning their own broodmare careers, and showing some promise. The mare’s first foal, the winning A.P. Indy mare Dance With Doves, is the dam of the winner Dance Again, who recently finished fifth in the Woodbine Oaks for Sam-Son. “Dance With Doves did have some talent, and we just weren’t able to keep her sound,” Whitford said. “We were a little
disappointed with [Dance Again in the Oaks], but we still have high expectations for her. She is a nice filly. We hope she’ll carry on the banner a little later in the year.” Sam-Son sold another daughter, Danceinthesunlight, for $675,000 at the 2008 Keeneland November breeding-stock sale. Now owned by Southern Equine Stables, the mare is the dam of two winners from as many starters. “[Dancethruthedawn] really hasn’t had a great opportunity to prove herself as a broodmare, but there’s still time there,” Whitford said. “She’s a 1998 model, so we’re hoping to get a few more foals yet. Even her daughters [could be productive], so she may still be a valuable part of history and moving forward.” The next member of Dancethruthedawn’s family to carry the colors for Sam-Son will be the mare’s 2-year-old filly, Coastal Dawn. The daughter of Giant’s Causeway received her early lessons under the tutelage of Tom Zwiesler at Sam-Son’s private training center in Ocala, Fla., and was to arrive at Woodbine to continue her training in late June or early July. “We’re in no big hurry with them,” Whitford said.
Sam-Son has strong hand in Queen’s Plate By Nicole russo Although she won 10 stakes races and earned a championship, Wilderness Song never quite gained the fame she deserved, racing for much of her career in the shadow of her stablemate, 1991 Canadian Triple Crown winner Dance Smartly. Wilderness Song was again relegated to the background when joining Dance Smartly in the broodmare band at their birthplace, Sam-Son Farms in Milton, Ontario, as Dance Smartly produced two classic winners. Still, when the field goes to the post for the Queen’s Plate on Sunday at Woodbine, it will be Wilderness Song who could be responsible for writing the next chapter in the farm’s history. Wilderness Song, who died in 2011 at age 23, is the second dam of likely Queen’s Plate favorite Up With the Birds, who will seek to give Sam-Son its sixth victory in the race. The Stormy Atlantic colt, who comes into the race off a dominant victory in the Marine Stakes at Woodbine, is the first foal out of the winning Seeking the Gold mare Song of the Lark. “[Wilderness Song] was a fantastic racemare but never really produced
a significant runner for us,” Sam-Son broodmare manager Dave Whitford said. “But one of her daughters, her first foal is Up With the Birds. We’re hoping that family will stay strong and get rejuvenated.” Wilderness Song, a daughter of Wild Again, showed early promise as a juvenile, winning the Grade 3 Mazarine Stakes and the Princess Elizabeth Stakes before faltering to finish eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Dance Smartly was third in that event, locking up the divisional Sovereign Award. The following spring, Wilderness Song won the Fury Stakes before finishing second to Dance Smartly in the Canadian Oaks. The stablemates met again in the Queen’s Plate, where Dance Smartly romped by eight lengths, with Wilderness Song a clear second. After finishing fifth in the Prince of Wales Stakes as Dance Smartly continued her march toward the Canadian Triple Crown, Wilderness Song spent the rest of the summer and fall competing against fillies, posting three straight stakes victories, culminating with a win in the Grade 1 Spinster
Stakes at Keeneland. However, she again failed to fire at the Breeders’ Cup, finishing seventh in the Distaff as Dance Smartly rolled to a win, locking up Canada’s Horse of the Year title and two divisional championships. The following season, Wilderness Song recorded six stakes wins or placings, including a 5 1/2-length score in the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Handicap and a game neck victory in the Pimlico Distaff Handicap. The campaign earned her a Sovereign Award as Canada’s champion older female. In 1993, Wilderness Song captured the Grade 2 Molly Pitcher Handicap and the Grade 3 Monmouth Park Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Handicap. She retired following that season with earnings of $1,482,033, second only to Dance Smartly among Canadian females. She was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2008. Wilderness Song was a consistent broodmare for Sam-Son, producing six winners from seven starters, including the Grade 2-placed Go to the Sun. However, she never came close to replicating herself. Her true impact has begun to be shown through her daugh-
ters, as Song of the Lark is her third stakes producer. Another daughter, the Storm Cat mare Wilderness Storm, produced the stakes winner Murmur, while Song of the Wild, by Gone West, produced the stakes-placed Giant’s Tomb. “Most people gamble on the fact that a good racemare makes a good broodmare, and I think that holds true,” Whitford said. “People want to pay big money for fillies that have a race record. Even if they don’t produce for you, it seems it skips a generation. It will pay off down the road. Their daughters still start producing good runners. If people are afraid they’re not going to get the payout immediately, it’s just a matter of time, if they’re in it for the long run – it’s going to pay off for them.” Up With the Birds leads a strong pair of homebreds for Sam-Son into the Queen’s Plate, both of whom represent Sam-Son’s long-term approach to developing families. Sam-Son’s other contender is His Race to Win, who was second by a nose in the Plate Trial on June 9. The Stormy Atlantic colt is out of the stakes-placed Gone West mare Fleet of Foot, whose dam, the unraced Seattle Classic, is a half-sister to Dance Smartly.
