A staycation is a period of time when an individual or family stays home and participates in leisure activities within close proximity to where they live. Staycations are affordable, easy to arrange and ultimately one spends more time enjoying the activities; rather than traveling long distances with the possibility of flight delays, road delays, poor weather etc.

If life is feeling out of control and money is in short supply, a staycation may just be the ultimate choice to ensure you unwind and reset.

Here are some staycation ideas to get you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, with one condition... do your best to unplug! It will enhance your experiences.

STAYCATION: It’s not about the money you spend. It’s about the moments you save.

Let the “un-traveling” begin…

1 Binge read a book or two from your “must read” list. An armchair journey is a fantastic trip when enjoyed in the company of an extraordinary author.

2 Candlelight and music for a full day. Nothing induces relaxation more than candlelight and music. Candles are proven to soothe, and their soft light makes it a perfect aid for any a day (or night) of full on relaxation. Stare into the hypnotic flame – it helps to soothe the soul; reducing stress and increase self-awareness.

4Spa day. While relaxing spa vacations seem to pop up all over Instagram, while travel is not so practical, your local luxury spa likely offers “day at the spa” packages that are affordable. Enjoy time with your partner or favorite somebody. Alternatively purchase sheet face masks, and mani-pedi supplies and turn your own space into a spa for a day. 3 Plan a camping trip in your own backyard. People have different reasons why they enjoy camping. Some like to disconnect from a busy life and reconnect with nature. Explore your own city. Be a tourist in your own town. How many of us have walked or driven by attractions in our own community but have never taken the time to visit them? Museums, libraries, historic districts, parks, hiking and walking trails. Oh, and don’t forget your camera - so you can record and share those instagrammable moments and inspire others to visit your hometown when travel starts up again.

Enrol in a class you have always thought about, learn a new skill or hobby, or take a cooking class - online or in small group learning. It can be a wonderful experience that will forever be part of your staycation memories.

7 Get Outside! Whether you plan your staycation in the heat of summer, or the cold of winter, include an outdoor excursion - daily if you are able. Lace up your hiking boots, visit a nearby park, go ice skating, or walk along the beach. Being in nature, or even viewing scenes of nature help to reduce anger, fear, and stress and increases pleasant feelings. Exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to your physical wellbeing, reduces blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones.

Give back to others. Sign up to volunteer at a soup kitchen, homeless shelter, library, or other community program during your staycation. Providing support to each other makes us feel happy. Lots of non-profits now offer online opportunities to help. Search Google for organizations that interest you.

All of these simple staycation ideas are stress free, inexpensive and renew your interest in your own community, resulting in a happier and more relaxed you. Enjoy!

Theofilos Koutroumanis was born in Athens, Greece. For many years he worked as a creative copywriter in advertising business in Greece and Cyprus, until he realized that with a photo you could describe a thousand words. Since then, Koutroumanis has been working as a professional photographer specializing in theater, portraits and commercial photography. But the streets of every city and country are his favorite photography studio and where he feels he is evolving both as a photographer and as a human being.

Areopagitou Street: Dancing and singing is deeply embedded in Greek DNA. At home, at the tavern and in the streets, music plays loudly. Everyone is free to dance - and everybody applauds.

Monastiraki Square. Live music, people of all ages and backgrounds. Locals and world travelers from different cultures merge downtown with Greek history as a backdrop, and ready to write their own chapter.

Monastiraki Square: Before the frappe and the bun, buy a newspaper. There is nothing more enjoyable in the morning than reading the local news while soiling your hands with ink.

Athina Street: As they have for hundreds of years, vendors setup their shops for the day ahead. It is truly a place where time has stood still.

Chalkida, Evia Island: Just 80 kilometers from Athens and the rhythm is completely different. Calm, tranquility and plenty of time to do what you really like, when you feel like doing it.

Monastiraki Square: Colors, flavors, fragrances, and thousands of different people come and sample them. Athens is full of “vitamins” for the mind and soul.

Street Food: Sold on most street corners in Athens, this traditional bun, called Koulouri, is a popular morning snack for Greeks who are not big breakfast eaters.

Drosia Beach: In recent years, Greece has welcomed thousands of refugees and immigrants. Their harmonious integration into society can be seen on this beautiful beach in Chalkida.

Tavern By the Sea: If you come to Greece and do not eat seafood with wine or ouzo then you have not come to Greece.

Lycabettus Hill: It dominates Athens with a small chapel at its top. A favorite destination for couples in love. Or for anyone who wants to fall into it.

Henriksholm Island SWEDEN

Give us 72 hours of your time and we’ll lower your stress levels, blood pressure and heart rate – so say the owners of The 72 Hour Cabin. These these gorgeous glass cabins are situated on Henriksholm Island in Western Sweden. Arriving at the private lake Ånimmen, you’ll be whisked across to the island by motorboat and taken to your Scandi-chic cabin, with a glass roof and walls to soak up the forest and lake views. All meals can be taken care of, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore the lake by rowboat or canoe, or simply relax in the hammock and take in the vistas.

Savor Seclusion

Cycladic Private Island GREECE

This gorgeous exclusive island nestled in the Aegean Sea is the perfect spot for a super-luxe family break. Accommodating a group of between 8-20 people, the beach-fronted villa has plenty of space and overlooks the azure sea. You’ll have the whole island to yourself, whilst a small team of staff, including a chef and butler, are on hand to ensure your total relaxation.

They can also arrange activities such as cookery lessons, yoga and kit surfing, should you require a little more entertainment. This is Greek island living at its very best, minus the crowds.

Getting there: Athens is the nearest airport. Airport transfers by boat or helicopter.

Island Hop Archipelago Trail FINLAND

Finland is an island hopper’s paradise. With a coastline that’s home to the world’s largest archipelago, you’ll find a staggering 40,000 islands to choose from. The summer season is a great time to road test the Archipelago Trail, a bucket-list route that takes in 250km of isle life, including historical villages, quint red wooden houses and marinas bobbing with sailing boats.

Traveling the full route takes between 2-5 days, but there’s also a mini-version that takes in three delightful islands off the coast of Turku, requiring just a day or two.

Getting There: Fly into Turku, then drive and catch public ferries out to the islands.

Nature Bound Port Cros FRANCE

Port Cros is the smallest, and by far the loveliest, of the three islands that make up The Golden Islands. Located off the coast of the South of France, the entire island is a National Park teeming with natural wonders, making it an ideal spot for hikers. In fact, you’ll have little option but to explore by foot as cars, and even bikes, are banned. This results in a seriously peaceful retreat, where you can wonder the trails for hours uninterrupted.

There are a handful of apartments to rent on the island, mostly overlooking a picture-perfect harbor, dotted with sailing boats and fringed with tropical palm trees.

Getting there: Toulon–Hyeres is the nearest airport and a shuttle boat takes visitors to the island.

Barefoot Luxury Tresco Island - Isles of Scilly ENGLAND

Standing on the powdery white sandy beaches of Tresco, surrounded by sub tropical plants, it’s hard to believe that you’re just 28 miles from the Britain’s Cornish coast. This dinky privately owned island is part of the Isles of Scilly archipelago and measures in at only two and half miles long by a mile wide. However, size isn’t everything, as Tresco punches above its weight with luxury accommodation and fine dining, including the 5-star Flying Boat Cottages and beach side restaurants offering fresh-out-the-sea fish dishes.

This upscale retreat is perfect for a dose of island life, with plenty of facilities on hand and endless, unspoilt beaches to roam.

Getting there: The fastest route to the island is flying direct to Tresco aboard Penzance Helicopters. Alternatively, fly or catch the train from London to Newquay, then it’s a short Skybus flight, or a boat from Penzance Harbor takes 2 hours 45 minutes.

From the outside, and often the inside too, the adventure travel industry appears fueled by testosterone and facial hair. Bucking this stereotype is Katy Willings, who has been in charge of organizing some of the world’s most renowned adventures including the longest and toughest horse race on Earth; a hair-raising long distance paramotor challenge; and a motorbike ride across the largest frozen lake on the planet.

In the process of running these trips for others, Katy has had some incredible adventures of her own. Katy now hopes to inspire and encourage other women and men to step out of their comfort zones and experience new adventures, with ‘experience’ being the key word.

“For me ‘adventure’ has a different meaning to the industry norm. I want people to experience adventure as I have, to go to far flung places and experience new things in a more immersive way.”

Katy Willings

Born in New Hampshire, Katy was a junior international dressage rider in her teens, representing Britain at three successive European Championships. Her equestrian skills led her to ride in the inaugural Mongol Derby, the world's longest horse race, involving traveling 600 miles through Mongolia on over twenty different semi-wild horses. During the race Katy fell in love with the wild country and its culture and people so much, that when she got home she sent the organizers her CV asking for a job, and so an 8 year career in the adventure travel industry began. During this period, she was a guinea pig for many adventures, a pioneer leading the way; and Katy didn’t know if what she was proposing was even possible.

In her hunt for new adventures, Katy has worked with horses in Europe, Mongolia and Malawi, and with men and machines in Morocco, Siberia and Sierra Leone. She has ridden vintage Russian motorcycles in -30oC (and got the damn things started in -40°C when no-one else could); wrangled with customs and ministries in far flung places to get equipment and people into the country; and managed local and international teams to deliver logistically complex and culturally significant goods and services. Katy also learned to paramotor which basically involves strapping an engine to your back with a paragliding wing above your head. All this occurred without the backup and support offered to those who end up doing the organized adventures themselves.

Throughout her time working on various adventures around the world, Katy’s love affair with Mongolia has stayed strong. In 2018, she decided she wanted a new kind of adventure for herself, and set up her own company called Morindoo (the phrase translates literally as the command “Mount Your Horses” and was reputedly Chinggis Khaan’s battle cry), which has Mongolia and a different kind of adventure travel philosophy at its heart.

“I have absolutely loved working in the industry as part of a team, but I couldn’t escape the fact that I was offering people someone else’s idea of what adventure is. For me ‘adventure’ has a different meaning to the industry norm. I want people to experience adventure as I have, to go to far flung places and experience new things in a more immersive way rather than just scratching the surface. This is when I feel most alive and what I want other people to experience.”

So Katy set off on a new host of adventures in Mongolia to ensure she could provide others with the experiences she hoped for. The last 18 months has seen her meeting shamans and Buddhist lama; riding for days with horse owners and learning about their way of life with favorite sacred and memorable places; as well as cooking and living with herders and their families.

“I’m so excited that I get to share these adventures with other people. My main aim is that they come away from Mongolia having immersed themselves in a new culture and environment; rather than just looking for a great story to tell their mates down at the pub. In today’s age of social media where everyone is trying to outdo everyone else on Instagram and Facebook, people spend so much time looking for the best photo or story opportunity that they forget to live whats going on around them. I want my adventures to prioritize how it feels, in real time and in memory, over how it looks in a photo. So yes we have done spectacular things in beautiful locations - dog sledding, snowmobiling, hanging out with reindeer, camels and wild horses; but the uniting thread is how it feels and how you feel forever afterwards.”

What’s next? Katy has ambitions to cycle the Iron Curtain, to fly a paramotor over Victoria Falls, and to ride a horse from New York to Buenos Aires.

A bucket list must visit

Turkey

From rolling Kackar mountains to long, sandy Mediterranean beaches, Turkey is a vast country filled with stunning landscapes worth visiting. Whilst many destinations are remote and beautiful, others are some of the top visited attractions in the world. With hundreds of sights to see Turkey needs to be on your bucket list.

Pamukkale

Based in Denizili Province, Pamukkale is one of world’s most magnificent natural wonders. The calcium solidified water has formed terraced pools that fall down the hillside, creating shimmering cotton-like limestone. You can swim in these large and small natural spa water pools, whilst getting a gorgeous landscape view of the surrounding countryside. Alongside allowing tourists to bathe in designated areas, there are plenty of well-preserved Roman ruins to take a look at during your visit.

Cappadocia

In the central Anatolian region of Turkey, Cappadocia is a unique lunar-like landscape of fairy chimneys formed by thousands of years of wind erosions. It is so much more than just a place, but a region that takes up to 4 days to explore completely. In the past, residents used to carve churches and local homes in the tufa rock, which still can be seen today. During the summer it is recommended to take a hot air balloon trip to see the vast landscape, alongside the green fields and abundance of flowers that fills the area.

Kursunlu Falls

Whilst being an incredible waterfall experience, Kurşunlu Falls is also a wildlife experience. During your visit you can see endemic plants, swim surrounded by cool pine forest and animal wildlife more. This is a lesser known attraction located in the heart of Kurşunlu Waterfall Nature Park but it is a beautiful, unique atmosphere scented with blackberries, wild roses and other plants.

Oludeniz

Oludeniz is a small neighborhood and beach resort in the Fethiye region. This popular coastal resort is a national nature reserve, meaning there is no building or construction allowed under the protection of the government. As you descend the hill from Hisaronu and Ovacik, you will begin to see the beauty of the Blue Lagoon- one of Turkey’s most photographed sites. Paragliding is popular and recommended to take in the stunning scenery in the best way possible.

Mount Ararat

Famed for its iconic two peaks, Mount Ararat is the mountain that is legendarily described in the Bible where Noah landed his Ark. This snow-capped, dormant compound volcano is located in the extreme east of Turkey, so should only be climbed by the most experienced hikers. With a height of 5137m (17,000ft), a hike up this mountain can take up to 8 days.

Patara

Nobody likes a crowded, noisy beach which is why Patara has become a rustic favorite for many travelers. At 12 miles long, this is Turkey’s longest sandy beach surrounded by ancient ruins amongst the landscape. Unlike other beaches around the Mediterranean, developments are not allowed due to the ancient city that surrounds it. This means that the beach is a calm, unspoilt paradise perfect for quiet bird watching and to see protected species such the resident Loggerhead turtles.

Mardin

Whilst new Mardin is a thriving city, there is something spectacular about the old town of Mardin. This jewel of southeast Turkey is based over the Mesopotamian plains, giving tourists a jaw-dropping view of the Tigris river, as well as the surrounding ancient architecture. Locals are keen to keep their cultural heritage alive, so a simple stroll down the streets of Mardin Old Town is a historical experience to be treasured.

As travelers seek more privacy and space, wine vacations (or staycations depending on where you live) can offer the ultimate solution. Vineyards around the world, set in vast acres of land, are increasingly offering visitors the opportunity to not only sample and buy wine, but to stay the night and dine in a unique setting. Wine tourism is a fantastic way to learn about wine, experience the land, meet passionate vineyard owners and holiday surrounded by vines. Here are some of my favorite wine destinations for the wine lover.

England

England is my adopted home and occupies a very special place in my heart. It’s been a popular tourist destination for centuries. Visitors love the energy of the city of London, picturesque villages and gorgeous countryside, so I’m never surprised by the number of Brits who choose to holiday at home each year! However, there is now a whole new exciting world for visitors to discover in the form of England’s rapidly developing wine making industry. Beautiful southern counties such as Hampshire and Sussex are now producing truly world-beating sparkling wines, and I love taking a trip into the countryside to explore England’s ever-expanding vineyards – some of my favorites include Hambledon Vineyard, Hush Heath and Rathfinny. It helps, of course, that as the industry is developing, a huge number of fabulous new wine hotels and experiences are also popping up, giving everyone ample opportunity to enjoy English wine in truly English luxury!

New Zealand

It’s hard to describe the pure wonder of a visit to New Zealand. It’s remote, of course, but the 24-hour flight time from the UK is a very worthwhile journey! The country’s wine scene has exploded in recent years, accompanied by a plethora of new vineyards, restaurants and tourism experiences which are attracting visitors to the country in their millions. I can’t get enough of the incredible scenery – many of New Zealand’s vineyards are set against the backdrops of some of the earth’s most incredible landscapes, making this a brilliant destination for keen photographers and Instagrammers! New Zealand combines warm, relaxed hospitality and a fantastic food scene with the most incredible environment for thrill seekers and lovers of the great outdoors. Getting outside is a part of everyday life here and whether you want to bungee jump, ski, or cycle a bit more sedately through a beautiful vineyard, I think New Zealand has it all!

Bordeaux & Cognac

I simply cannot think of a more iconic wine travel destination than Bordeaux! Not only is Bordeaux a Mecca for wine lovers but also an exciting travel destination in its own right. The city of Bordeaux is a fabulous gateway to the wider region - just a short journey from the airport transports you to the heart of a city that’s alive with fascinating history, splendid architecture and a vibrant cultural scene, which of course is often is centered around wine. I think that the best way to enjoy the region is to combine a visit to Bordeaux with a trip to its other famous neighbor, Cognac. Cognac is one of the most famous spirits in the world, produced in a traditional method for centuries in the pretty French town of the same name which sits in the river Charente less than 2 hours’ drive north of Bordeaux. I love the intimate feel of this tiny town and the surrounding area, where it is possible to immerse yourself in 2,000 amazing years of French history and tradition alongside great gastronomy and warm hospitality.

Moldova

Moldova is my homeland and is also one of Europe’s best-kept travel secrets … but not for much longer. Moldova is a small but perfectly formed nation which sits between Romania and the Ukraine. It has a long history of wine making and wine here is an inherent part of everyday life. A fun fact is that the country itself is shaped like a bunch of grapes! You can expect a brilliant blend of peaceful countryside, magnificent architecture, fascinating history and rural charm. Hospitality is absolutely second to none here and the Moldovan people will always go out of their way to make guests feel welcome. So much so that the slogan of Moldova’s tourist board is ‘Be Our Guest!’ I think Moldova is perfect for wine travel as it is also the home of some of Europe’s most ancient and fascinating wine culture, the biggest underground wine cellar in the world and over 150 wine producers of all shapes and sizes. I would particularly recommend a traditional Moldovan wine tasting and overnight stay at beautiful Castel Mimi.

Tuscany

Tuscany is one of Italy’s most iconic wine making regions and also one of my favorite wine destinations in the world! My family and I have had many happy times here – we must have visited at least 10 times and this is one of the few places that we keep coming back to time and time again. Tuscany is a beautiful destination and an incredibly romantic one. The landscapes are stunning, some of the world’s greatest wines can be tasted here (alongside fabulous Italian cuisine) and it’s also the home of some of Italy’s most famous towns and cities, such as Florence, Siena and Pisa. There is something so special about a warm Tuscan summer evening, eating al fresco with friends and enjoying the region’s incredible wines and amazing cuisine. It’s all completely enchanting, and a visit to the rolling hills of Tuscan wine country is a truly unforgettable experience. Tuscany is the perfect place to learn more about wine in a very indulgent way!

Douro Valley

I lost my heart to the Douro Valley a long time ago! When you travel to this beautiful piece of Northern Portugal, you are immediately reminded that travel changes your life for the good and that in the madness of our hectic London lives, travel helps us to live a happier, fuller existence. The great weather, excellent food and wine scene and the dual attractions of the lovely coastal city of Porto and the gorgeous inland vineyards are making this an increasingly popular destination for tourists. However, one of my favorite things about the Douro Valley is that despite the rise in tourism, the region remains pure when it comes to wine. It feels so untouched and so remarkably close to the sky – enjoying a sunset here, glass of port in hand overlooking the beautiful Douro River, is a truly humbling experience. If you get the chance, don’t pass up on the opportunity to try my favorite Port wines from the legendary Quinta do Noval!

Craving the jungle or the ocean? Belize has something for everyone.

THE JUNGLE: San Ignacio

San Ignacio is the heart of the Cayo District. Located in the jungle, a day in San Ignacio is filled with opportunities. From bird watching in the morning, to exploring ancient Mayan ruins during the day, to roaming the jungle on a guided night walk in the evening, there is an abundance of things to do for every type of traveler.

Spending the day in the middle of the jungle cave-tubing and zip-lining with Belizing.com and Belize Cave Expeditions is an unBELIZEable experience.

You’ll spend your morning zipping atop the trees, gliding from platform to platform, hiking higher and higher to the next lines--it’s exhilarating. After, while already filled with giddy excitement, you’ll make your way to the entrance of the cave system for an afternoon of cave tubing. Lounging lazy river style, you’ll float along for two hours, guided by the current through the different caves.

We learned about the history of Belize, the caves themselves, and the Mayan influence from our knowledgeable and incredible tour guide Luis. About an hour in, he asked if we’d like to go on foot into part of the cave and witness complete darkness. After climbing up into one of the cave’s crevasses, we army crawled through another section and found ourselves in a part that had old Mayan plates and artifacts. When we reached a certain point, Luis told us to switch off our lights. We took in the utter darkness in silence--completely mesmerized.

Trying the local cuisine is a must. From traditional dishes like fry jacks for breakfast, salbutes for lunch, jerk chicken with coconut rice and beans for dinner, and bread pudding for dessert, you’ll see the melting pot of cultures that is Belize melt together in the delicious dishes offered.

Most notably, Ko-Ox Han-Nah is a favorite among locals--and for good reason. Splitting the pork tacos, chicken quesadillas, and classic coconut rice, beans, coleslaw and chicken dish, Jess and I couldn’t put our forks down–except when handling our tacos. Affectionately called Han-nahs, this restaurant is a tasty haven filled with good people, flavorful food, and delicious drinks.

WHERE TO STAY

After a day spent exploring the jungle, retreating to the stunning San Ignacio Resort and curling up in one of the hammocks by the pool with a book, on the terrace with a coconut mojito from the bar, or in your luxurious bed with the television on and room service delivered, is the perfect treat.

San Ignacio Resort is a family-owned Belizean boutique hotel with breathtaking views and incredible grounds. Overlooking the jungle, it’s a bird watching haven and a wildlife lover’s dream.

During my stay in the Royal Suite I woke to toucans on the balcony and Bradford, the iguana, on the tree out front. It was simply magical.

To add to the charm, the hotel is home to the Green Iguana Conservation Project. At the forefront of the conservation efforts for the threatened species, the San Ignacio Resort and the Green Iguana Conservation Project raise, care for, and release these iguanas into the wild. The guided tour will take you to the conservation where you’ll learn about these dinosaur-like creatures and the conservation efforts.

THE ISLAND LIFE: San Pedro

San Pedro is the heart of Ambergris Caye, the largest Belizean island.

With the Belize Barrier Reef just offshore, San Pedro is a diver’s paradise. Largest in the Northern Hemisphere and second largest in the world to Australia’s, the reef system spans 185 miles, comprises 7 marine reserve zones, over 400 cays, 3 atolls, and is a haven for plant and animal marine life

Onshore, the town is a bustling haven for tourism with popular restaurants, bars, hostels, hotels, and tour companies.

With the second largest Barrier Reef in the world, the snorkeling and scuba diving adventures are a must. The Blue Hole is perhaps Belize’s most popular diving spot. The giant marine sinkhole is circular in shape and reaches depths of over 400 feet deep. Mayan for ‘little channel’, Hol Chan Marine Reserve is another popular scuba diving and snorkeling location in Belize, comprising of 4 different zones. In order to maintain the reef, certain zones permit commercial and sport fishing, while others do not. From manatees to dolphins, stingrays to nurse sharks, moray eels to barracudas, sea turtles to lobsters, the biodiversity of the Barrier Reef is tremendous. Shark Ray Alley, which is traditionally where fishermen cleaned their catch, welcomes nurse sharks and rays and is the most popular snorkeling spot in Belize, allowing snorkelers to swim alongside the incredible creatures.

For those looking for a balance of relaxation and adventure, a sailing adventure with Rum Punch II is the perfect choice. This is where you’ll find Captain George, which in and of itself is one of the best selling features. His company, which his daughter helps run, allows you to customize your adventure and choose which snorkeling and swimming spots you’d like to enjoy. He’s also quite the chef!

For a more action packed adventure, choose one of the Tuff-e-Nuff tours. Their experienced guides will get you in the water exploring a number of different spots. If you’re traveling with someone who wants to dive and someone who wants to snorkel, this company allows for both on their tours.

Back on the island, make sure to explore the not-so-secret Secret Beach. Fill your day with sunshine, boozy beverages, and delicious food from the Secret Paradise Beach Bar. Head to restaurants with local chefs like Hooked on Lina Point and El Fogon for a taste of the traditional cuisine. Hooked on Lina Point is a small open concept kitchen run by Chef Lucky. From the mainland, Lucky brings his favorite Belizean dishes to Lina Point. His jerk chicken, coleslaw, and coconut rice and beans were by far the best I’ve ever tried.

For live music and a little more of a nightlife scene, check out the on-the-water restaurants Palapas and Losers. If you’re interested in grabbing a nightcap and having a fun night out, Crazy Canucks offers themed nights of Karaoke, Trivia and Hermit Crab Racing.

WHERE TO STAY

If you’re looking to do San Pedro on a budget, Sandbar is the perfect choice for your stay. This beach front hostel is equipped with a casual open-air restaurant and bar, friendly staff, and a clean living area. With a hammock garden, plunge pool, and over-the-water deck with lounge chairs and water tubes, the fun atmosphere is the perfect paradise on a budget!

For a little more high end stay, Las Terrazas Resort offers a luxury complex on a private beach with an infinity pool, a spa, and a poolside restaurant. Here you can rent kayaks, paddle boards, bikes and even learn to scuba dive at their on-site PADI Dive Shop.

The over-the-water bungalows at Lina Point are perfect for honeymooners or couples looking for a more quiet stay. Here you’ll be slightly more removed from the main hub of San Pedro but there are still restaurants like Dive Bar that are walking distance. The on-site restaurant, Hooked on Lina Point, is small but fantastic, serving breakfast until late with Chef Lucky in the kitchen.

From the Ballrooms of Venice to a Pasta Kitchen in Rome

As a child, my European mother Johanna Mendel Mitchell made sure that from an early age I was an adorer of Venice. On summer trips to this extraordinary city, I was consumed by the mystery of the masks that were sold everywhere. On further inquiry, vendors would gush, “Il Carnivale! One day you must come to Il Carnivale!”

One day I did, and it was fantastic!

Considered the oldest carnival in Europe dating back to 1162, this is the last hurrah before Lent. It is a week-long farewell to all things fun; and the equivalent to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. By the time of the Renaissance, masks were added to protect their decadent owners’ identities. Although Mussolini banned Il Carnivale during the 1930s, it was revived by Venetian artisans in 1979 and has been attracting flamboyant party goers ever since.

My experience was a joyous fantasia of people of all ages from all over

the world in period costume. We all paraded through the streets from dawn until dusk; eventually gathering in San Mark’s Square for iPhone poses, to sip Prosecco and then to party until dawn at the glorious Balls held in magnificent palazzos throughout the city.

The extravaganza was made even more delightful by the company of my dear festive, fanciful, carpe diem friends and family - Hadar BusiaSingleton, Pierre Lalande and my brother Cameron Mitchell Jr.

We all arrived in high spirits on Friday night and woke early on Saturday to visit the Rialto Market by the famous bridge in Campo della Pescheria. The Rialto has been the financial and commercial center of Venice since the 1100s. It is the transactional link between East and West; where spices, metals, precious stones, perfumes, balms, silks and fabrics have been sold for centuries alongside mouthwatering fruits, fresh produce, fish, meats and cheeses.

By 9am we had already feasted on delicious fresh raspberries and espressos, wearing magnificent masks we had purchased that morning from

market vendors. We wandered the streets enjoying Venice’s amazing morning masquerade that joyously continued all day.

At sunset, we donned our costumes and enjoyed Negroni cocktails at the hotel. We walked over bridges and cobblestones to the traditional Baglioni Ball, imagining the centuries of other party goers who had done just the same.

Feted to a six course feast in a palazzo, we listened to Baroque music, received instruction in the minuet by a Commedia del Arte troupe, and danced the night away by candlelight.

By Sunday evening we were boogieing in our crinolines under strobe lights at the fabulous Official Ball of Venice which is held at the Casino di Venezia - the oldest casino in the world.

Upon entering the great hall we were serenaded by a singer in beads lounging on a half-moon suspended from the 17th century ceiling. At 3am a gondola picked us up from the Casino dock and gently rocked us back to our hotel. Hours later, hoop skirts and wigs were packed up and we caught the train to Roma.

We couldn’t however help wearing our masks for the trip!

We arrived in time to take a cooking class with Francesco - tackling fettuccine, ravioli, and a killer tiramisu.

The following day, our delicious five hour lunch was at Aroma, the most magnificent Michelin-starred

restaurant. Aroma is right across the street from the Colosseum, and kitty corner to the Forum on the fourth floor of the magnificent Palazzo Manfredi.

The Palazzo Manfredi sits on the ruins of the largest gladiatorial school in Rome - The Ludus Magnus (Latin for the Great Gladiatorial Training School). It was built by the emperor Domitian in the late first century C.E. On these grounds, the great gladiators from around the world lived, trained and prepared for battle.

The Palazzo itself was built as a private villa in the17th century and later became a hunting lodge. In 2002, under Count Guido Manfredi it became the grand hotel we know today.

Dusk had already set in as we finished our extraordinary repast, and that

evening we wandered the strada, happily exploring and getting lostand yes, all roads do lead to Rome!

Our last day in Italia we spent at Cinecitta Studios, called “Hollywood on the Tiber”, and the hub of Italian cinema. Founded in 1937 by Benito Mussolini primarily to make propaganda films for the Axis’ war machine, it was bombed by the Allies during World War II, and shortly after was used as a displaced persons camp housing 3000 refugees. During the 1950s it was rebuilt for large American film productions such as “Ben-Hur” and “Roman Holiday”. In the 1960s it inspired the great Federico Fellini. We paid homage to him and his favorite set in Teatro 5.

That night we sipped Aperol, and watched the Roman sun set over the Mediterranean Sea from the rooftop of the Hotel Eden totally enchanted by our extraordinary Italian adventure.
