ALCOHOL INFUSED WHIPPED CREAM PARKING TICKETS Oh, downtown. I kinda hate you again. The last time I was downtown I received the first parking ticket of my life for parking alongside Orange Avenue in the same place I have parked for the past six years. I guess someone failed to tell me that I was supposed to pay attention to anything taped to a pole because it might be one of the city’s superofficial “No parking during Magic games” signs. Monday through Wednesday downtown Orlando is usually pretty fucking dead. So why would you take street parking away along Orange Avenue on the nights the local bars are emptiest and probably need the business the most? There are plenty of bar patrons who could give a fuck about the Magic game and don’t want to pay game-night prices in a lot or garage because Orange Avenue is a no-parking zone. Sure, you can still park on the side streets, but good luck finding a space. I guess the $20 fee to park in the Amway Center garage is supposed to make the $10$15 parking fees around the rest of downtown look like a bargain. But has Orlando forgotten that its unemployment rate has risen to a whopping 11.9 percent? Seriously, $20 to park? This isn’t fucking New York City – by

the way, it only costs $5 more to park next to Radio City Music Hall than it does to park at the Amway Center. At least I had some fun the night I received the ticket (before I knew I was ticketed, that is). I wasn’t out to see a Magic game, and I can’t remember much, thanks to the whipped cream vodka shots (which I will get to in a moment), but from what I can recall, the casual justneed-to-get-out evening started off on the right foot. My friend (and Drink sales rep) Liz and I went to check out the Attic, a new bar that opened in the AKA Lounge’s old spot on Pine Street. I’ve always loved the space, no matter what bar has occupied it, with its brick walls and cozy Northern feel. But I’m not going to lie: I’m not a fan of those neon-lit Miami-style outdoor cabanas that jump out at you unexpectedly as you turn the corner to get to the VIP dance area. Anyway, as I sat nursing my beer by the pool table and texting a friend who was at the Imperial watching the Magic game, Liz was texting with Rob, owner of Gringos Locos. She asked him to meet up with us for our random and extremely uneventful Wednesday night out. We headed over a block and set up camp at WaiTiki where, for some stupid reason, I
decided whipped cream vodka shots sounded good for the three of us – times eight rounds. While Liz tried to sell an ad to Rob, I started chatting him up. “So. How old are you? 40? What? 30? Really? Oh, I didn’t mean you look 40! I meant you are mature like a 40-year-old, and that’s good for a 30-year-old. You’re cute. You have a mature voice. Very mature. You should buy an ad. Your nachos are fucking good,” I slurred as Liz glared at me. Whipped cream vodka spurred the next item of conversation as Liz told us about CREAM, alcohol-infused whipped-cream that comes in the same kind of can you buy Reddi-wip in. You can get CREAM in a bunch of flavors: raspberry, chocolate, cherry and caramel. “This is awesome,” I yelled. “You know, Four Loko didn’t fuck enough college kids up.”
“Huffing and alcoholism, all in one can,” I said. “So good. Our younger generation’s road to a worthless human existence seems almost guaranteed now.” I smiled to myself and ignored the fact that no one was listening to me anymore. Liz gave me some sort of creepy eyeball signal, and with that we got up and headed down Orange Avenue to my car. The last thing I remember was her taking my keys from me. The pizza sauce that I saw all over my face the next morning revealed that we must have stopped at a pizza shop, but I’ll be damned if I can remember actually eating anything. I was just happy that I didn’t notice the fucking ticket on my car while I was drunk, because had I actually seen it, I probably would have smushed it into some bum shit in a street alley and smashed it onto the pole in front of my car. Waking up with pizza sauce on my face is OK, but waking up with someone’s random shit on my fingers just doesn’t seem acceptable.
Liz and Rob ignored me.

HILLBILLY HUMPDAYS, FEATURING BEN PRESTAGE This monthly event at Will’s Pub features local and regional country, bluegrass and folk acts. The January edition will showcase the talented Ben Prestage, a veritable one-man band. He plays a custom-made instrument that has both guitar and bass strings so it can be played as a guitar, a bass or both at the same time. He’s also got a drum kit equipped with four foot pedals that allow him to play with his heels and toes. Prestage will be joined by recent Orlando transplant Richard Sherfey, whose “drunken Gospel” should mix well with the strong yet sultry and smooth voice of Jacksonville’s Christina Wagner and the always-a-party live act that The Darling Cavaliers bring to the table. CROOKED BAYOU CLOSURE
It was a sad day indeed when downtown staple Crooked Bayou closed its doors for good last month. Whatever the owners claim caused it, we’re pretty sure it’s because people stopped going there to eat. (Blame it on appetite loss caused by influx of drunk and disheveled kids from some of the various club nights the venue started hosting.) Should have just stuck to serving food, Crooked Bayou. Rest in peace, Shoyster. JEFF DANIELS AT THE PLAZA
Lest you think actor Jeff Daniels is content to live his halcyon days set upon laurels composed of gilded celluloid classics like Dumb and Dumber and Speed, he’s appearing at The Plaza Theater this month where he’ll prove that he’s more than just your average funny guy/bomb fodder. Packing a six-string and a goofy fedora, he’s on tour to promote his fifth acoustic folk album, which just goes to show that not every actor need branch out from Hollywood by starting an annoying rock band (lookin’ at you, Leto. You, too, Keanu). Jan. 16, 8 pm, The Plaza Theater, VIP $30, Orchestra $20 PEEK-A-BOO BURLESQUE
Beautiful women dressed in burlesque outfits. That’s probably all we need to say to pique your interest, but there’s plenty more worth saying about this recurring event hosted by Stardust Lounge. The ambience is not that of a seedy sex show (not that we’d really mind that). It’s a classy setup, and a fun show for couples (if you don’t scratch your man’s eyeballs out for ogling the gals, that is). The first five groups of five to RSVP get a round of drinks free and a discount on bottles of champagne; the first party of 10 to RSVP gets a round free, discounts on bottles of champagne and VIP seating. THE NEW GRAFFITI JUNKTION The folks at Graffiti Junktion know that first rule of duplicating success is that you don’t screw with a winning formula, even if it means you have to hand paint those stupid benches one by one all over again. The new Graffiti Junktion has taken up shop at 2401 Edgewater Drive in College Park (adieu, K Restaurant & Wine Bar), and it’s got much of what you’ll find in the original, including a full liquor bar, trivia and karaoke nights, and a hip neighborhood that’s home to people who are financially secure enough to pay $12 for a burger. The only thing the original joint has that this one doesn’t is the tarp-draped open-air scheme in the dining area, and good riddance – unless you enjoy eating inside a snare drum during summer storm season.
I DO DOWNTOWN BRIDAL CRAWL Sunday Funday-ers, consider yourselves warned. On Jan. 9, downtown Orlando is going to be swarmed with brides to be (or, terrifyingly, wannabe brides to be) and the future husbands we feel bad for. For $10 per person and $15 per couple (if you buy tickets in advance, that is – the price goes up to $20 the day of the event) the Orange County Regional History Center is going to set future newlyweds loose to amble along the cobbled streets of downtown Orlando. While the pleasant January sun kisses their happy faces, they’ll be encouraged to patronize restaurants, photographers and florists so h ffor their h most they can get a taste of the services available to them special of days. DATE N GHT S
o, Casanova, seems you’ve got a hot date but nowhere cool to go. Your cooking is crap, dinner and a movie is what kindergartners do and scouring the Internet has left you with the impression that romance is dumb. The following
BY PAUL HIEBING
suggested dates aren’t tried and true, nor are they necessarily good ideas, but they’re better than the nothing you’ve got.
the nature date Face it, you want to cut right to chase: Is your date a keeper or not? One of the best ways to test your burgeoning romance is to go canoeing together. For $30 you can rent a canoe from Wekiva WEKIVA ISLAND Island and argue your way through 1014 MIAMI SPRINGS ROAD, LONGWOOD each scenic turn, shallow log and WWW.WEKIVAISLAND.COM spider web-draped pass. You’ll either travel with ease and laughter, and share memories of those joys over cheap beer and wine at the Island’s bar, or you will try to feed each other to the gators (in which case, you’ll still want those beers at the bar).

STARDUST VIDEO AND COFFEE 1842 E WINTER PARK ROAD, ORLANDO
Pretending you’re locally conscious is one way to disguise being cheap. On Monday nights the Audubon Park Community Market, where vendors from across Central Florida sell crafts, clothes and food, takes place in the parking lot of Stardust Video and Coffee. Dinner can be bought from one of several tents (or Stardust itself ) that serve sandwiches to soups to whole extravagant dishes, usually for less than $10 a plate. The full bar in Stardust can play host to your evening drinking needs, or you can keep the cheap theme going by skipping over to Will’s Pub for Low Dough Monday, which nets you a dollar off all drinks (but, uh, don’t tell your date that). Theme Date Nothing impresses a date quite like creative coordination. First, grab a uniquely delicious dinner (like the dragon eggs or pulled pork on a waffle) at the new Spooky’s Black Cat Café, and imbibe heavily from their impressive beer and wine list before heading to your next stop: any palm reader in the ViMi District. Let your future be prognosticated (and lucky numbers divined) before checking out the Greenwood Cemetery History Stroll. You’ll visit more than 100 graves of notable Orlando residents and learn a bit about the historical cemetery itself. But to make this date work, it has to take place on Friday, Jan. 21 (the only day there is a history walk) before 9 p.m., so plan ahead!

Grab the Four Loko you stashed away before it was cast off store shelves for good and it’s off to the basement parking garage of the unfinished Superchannel Center (a.k.a. the I-4 Eyesore) for an intimate evening your date will never forget. It’s quiet, secure, and so private no one will ever hear what you crazy, crazy lovebirds are up to.

CROOKED BAYOU
1. What was your first bartending job? Crooked Bayou ... I came in for my first shift and thought I was only cocktail serving, but it was a blast and I did fine. 2. What’s the best way to piss you off? When someone says, “Make it really strong!” I know how to pour a good drink. It’s kind of an insult ... especially if you expect it for free.
3. What’s a good reason to give a patron a free drink or shot? If they did a cartwheel into the bar while wearing glitter spandex ... OK maybe not, but if you tip right I’ll remember. 4. What’s your least favorite drink to make? Frozen drinks. Fortunately the Bayou doesn’t have a blender! 5. If you weren’t bartending, what would you be doing? Bartending is great, especially while in college. I’m spoiled now, I can’t even imagine going back to hourly paychecks. I’m lucky enough to work with good people and have a boss I consider a friend. I’m going to school to be a cop. But at this point in my life, while I’m in college, this is it for me! * Crooked Bayou closed on Dec. 23 (see page 20). The space is now occupied by Smokehouse BBQ.

1. What’s the best way to piss you off? I can deal with a lot. Fights kill the atmosphere though. 2. What’s your least favorite drink to make? Beers. It’s too easy – I like to get creative! 3. What’s the best way to get a free drink at the bar? Treat your bartenders right, there might be a free drink in the future. 4. Someone asks what’s good. You recommend? Key lime pie martini. It’s a gorgeous drink, and it has the graham cracker crust! 5. If you weren’t bartending, what would you be doing? I’m a musician. We have a blues jam night here on Saturdays, so it allows me to do both!
MATT SAVOY 1. What’s the best way to piss you off? Causing a fight. Rarely happens, because we’re a drama-free bar. It takes a lot, and I’m OK dealing with drunk people. 2. What’s your least favorite drink to make? I hate making martinis when it’s insanely busy, like on Sunday. A martini is a sipping drink and needs extra time. I could have made 20 Long Islands in the time it takes to make one martini, because I never do anything half-assed and I want to get it right.
3. What’s the best way to get a free drink at the bar? Have a friend that is buying you one. Or be a straight guy that is willing to hit on one of our patrons ... but they might expect something in return! 4. Someone asks what’s good. You recommend? I recommend our martini happy hour. Most people usually only know dirty martinis or cosmos, so I ask them if they like sweet or sour or fruity drinks, and I go from there. When drinks start at a dollar and go up every hour, that’s the time to experiment and try something new. 5. If you weren’t bartending, what would you be doing? I was an underwriter in Tampa. I’m actually working toward my masters right now. But I don’t know what else I’d be doing.

KAYLEIGH GRAFFITI JUNKTION 2 1. What’s the best way to piss you off? There’s a lot! But when people lift their glass at you and make a kiss noise to get your attention. I think all bartenders would agree. 2. What’s your least favorite drink to make? Boring stuff like Jack and Coke. I like to make stuff that has a lot of ingredients. It’s fun to make shot and mix drinks. That’s what separates you from the servers, and why people become bartenders. Anyone can serve just a beer! 3. What’s the best way to get a free drink at the bar? If people come in with a group and are genuine and have a good vibe, I’ll buy you a shot. I want to keep you around because you’re bringing good energy to me and the people around you and making the place fun!
4. Someone asks what’s good. You recommend? The mojitos here are well-known, but I also like to make margaritas. It depends on who is sitting in front of you, though. If it’s a guy with a bunch of tatts and piercings you might not offer him a margarita. 5. If you weren’t bartending, what would you be doing? I have a degree in sports and fitness, so I’d probably be a personal trainer, but bartending is more fun!
DIANNE WALLY’S 1. What’s the best way to piss you off? It takes a lot ... Walking out with a glass or trying give a drink to a minor. That puts my job at risk. You can’t get too pissed off working at a bar. You have to keep a good attitude. 2. What’s your least favorite drink to make? I like mixing drinks. The flavored vodkas have kinda ruined it because you don’t have to mix as much, and shaking makes you money! Your job is to perform – you are the show.

3. What’s the best way to get a free drink at the bar? We actually have a policy to give a free drink on birthdays and to first-time customers. And you can always tell a firsttime customer …They’ll order a double! 4. Someone asks what’s good. What do you recommend? Orange Julius: whipped cream vodka and OJ, or a shot and a beer for $5 every Monday (PBR tallboy and a shot of Jameson Irish whiskey), or Lindsay Lohan, which is a red-headed slut with splash of Coke. 5. If you weren’t bartending, what would you be doing? I would be doing the full-time mom thing. I only work here part-time, but the bartender thing is a great outlet. When I come in I’m nobody’s wife, nobody’s mom, I’m just Diane the Bartender. It’s a great job for a mom because it gets you out and social.

MUSIC
LEFT OF CENTER with WILL WALKER Interview by Kyle Raker
W
ill’s Pub is an institution in the Orlando music scene. Although it’s only been in its current location at 1040 Mills Ave. for a few years (it was forced out of its original location in 2006 to make way for a parking lot when the property was sold), the venue is a hub for local music. Rather than the usual profiles of local bands playing around town, we interviewed Will Walker, owner of Will’s Pub, for this month’s Left of Center column. When did you first get involved in music? I was always a music fan in one way or another. Whether it was my parents listening to Motown or my own stuff growing into a teen. I tried to take some guitar lessons as a kid, and ... well, let’s just say I sucked. What made you decide to open your own venue? Will’s wasn’t a venue in the beginning. We just had some pool tables and a jukebox ... Orlando was a different place at the time. There was a decent music scene but nowhere for people to play. Skinnys, Go Lounge, The Sapphire ... that was basically it. A lot of my customers were in local bands. And, well, bands started asking me to let them play shows there. So we did it. What was the first band to play at Will’s Pub? When was that? Jim O’Rourke was the first. He’s still playing around town. What lessons have you learned while running Will’s that you’d pass on to someone who wanted to open a venue of their own? Well, the venue part is pretty common sense. We learn things all the time. It’s usually the human element that catches you by surprise. Like some asshole stage diving to nowhere.

Any words of advice for bands that are trying to play shows at your venue? Be persistent but not annoying. Don’t call or come to the club thinking you’re going to speak with someone. Get together a couple of songs online. GO TO OTHER PEOPLE’S SHOWS. Nothing like getting an email from a band in the “407” saying “I’ve never been to your club but we should play there.” Networking pays! The old Will’s Pub was closed in 2006 and you ended up moving it to its current spot in 2008. What’s the story behind the closing of the old location, and how did you decide on the current location? Aww, yeah. This is where a lot of speculation has happened. I was subletting from the motel next to the old locale. When the property went up for sale I was supposed to have first right of refusal to buy my parcel.

BAND REVIEWS
MUSIC
LEFT OF CENTER ...continued from page 34 Well, in layman’s terms, money talks and I was simply left out of the circle until it was more than I could afford. The rest is history. As far as the new location, I checked a couple of different places out. I wanted to move a little bit closer to downtown, but not be downtown. Ultimately, the new location ended up being the best fit. What’s your favorite Orlando band right now? Really? Whatever band is playing at Will’s tonight? Any bands you miss that you wish were still around today? Any you’re glad to see are no longer around? I miss some of the ones I started working with. Kow, Cluj, The Hate Bombs, so many more ... I kind of grew as a person with some bands. Naming names about who I’m glad isn’t around anymore is just a little more than I’d do while sober.
How else have you been involved in the music scene over the years? I had Will’s South for about a year during 2005 and 2006. I built the stage they are using at Taste and booked that place for about a year. I’d like to think I’ve had a little to do with Orlando’s music scene since I started. I’ve helped fund a couple of CDs and hopefully there are a few babies out there Will’s Pub made happen! You mentioned Will’s South. Do you plan on opening a second location again in the future? Yes, we do. It’s going to be a little while, but a second location is in the plans. How would you compare the Orlando music scene today to what it was 5, 10, 15 years ago? The “scene” is way bigger in terms of how much is going on, but it is less cohesive than ever. There are little microcosms that exist in the outskirts that aren’t even known about around the rest of the city. What do you think you would like to see more of in our local music scene? Why? Once again, people in other bands really should go see other local bands. That is how you make a scene. Then they come see you. Their friends and fans become yours, and it grows from there. Also, some show sharing is really healthy. Trade some gigs with Tampa bands or Gainesville bands. It’s a small drive and it enriches the whole area. And local bands: Please learn how to promote your shows. If some of you were as inventive in promoting as you are in making up excuses we would all be fucking successful. Which band in town would you say are the heaviest drinkers? The old guard are still the champs. Bands like The Ludes or Shak Nasti kill it. The new guys just aren’t that passionate. They’ll learn.
