The recent floods in Chennai have brought to fore the problem of flooded cars. Not that this is any new - a couple of years ago, we’ve had floods in Mumbai too, but not on the scale witnessed in Chennai, with citizens being rescued in boats, trying to avoid cars whose roofs one could barely see in the murky waters. What happens to these soaked-to-the-frame cars? We explore this issue in depth in these pages, and also give you pointers on how to avoid buying a submerged car, as it could be very dangerous and can potentially take the life of your family. Also, the pre-owned car market has never been better, with new cars being released with increasing regularity, the prices of used cars take a slightly downward spiral and result in more sales. Not only that, the pollution problems in Delhi and the resultant Odd-Even formula to restrict half the cars in Delhi coming on to the roads. Those who are not connected by the public service are exploring the possibility buying second cars. Even in Chennai, where insurance claims are taking a while to get processed due to the large numbers of claims, pre-owned car dealers are reporting a high percentage of people flocking their showrooms to enquire about small hatchbacks to fill in the gap, while their insurance claims are being processed. In this issue we review some great pre-owned cars across different price ranges - we have for you the BMW 3 Series and the Ssangyong Rexton in the top end of the segment. & the Maruti Suzuki SX4 and Hyundai Santro Xing on the other end. The range, utility, trim levels, price range and practicality cannot be more varied, and in this lies the choice for our readers. Most of the used cars bought in India are either entry-level or the top-end ones, the sale of executive class and sports models or sedans is very low, so if we shift our eyes away from the ‘usual’ cars that everyone buys, we can find some great cars at bargain prices. We had some interesting feedback from our readers on our choice of stories, with both bouquets and brickbats in equal measure. Rest assured, we take them all seriously and in the future issues, we will cover the stories which you desire. We also take a look at the history behind the Chevrolet brand. We’ve all had our share of band, baaja, baraat in most Indian cities, with the open-top Chevy Impala carrying the dulha taking centre-stage and it’s really wonderful to go back memory lane and learn more about brand Chevy.

Dear Sir, I bought a pre-owned Maruti Swift recently and the credit goes to your magazine. In a previous issue of Driven, you had an article on how to avoid buying a ‘bad’ pre-owned car and it was an eye opener for me and I learnt a lot about how much one has to know before investing on a pre-owned car. My experience with Driven Magazine has been awesome as it helped me in deciding how to choose my dream car which is worth the investment. Thanks a lot to you guys for bringing out an information laden magazine and looking forward for more insights about the cars we drive, and have no information about. Mounisha Barua, Hyderabad
Dear Sir, Your review of the Skoda Octavia VRS ‘Road rocket at bargain prices’ in your December issue was an eye opener for me. I never knew I could buy it for as low as 3.25 lakhs. Even your other story ‘Six entry level luxury saloons under 5 Lakhs’ was great. The cars featured under it, namely, the Merc C-Class C-200CGI, the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and the Skoda Octavia, was nothing short of phenomenal. I cannot tell you how happy I am after reading it. My happiness has a reason, as I was about to buy a WagonR and for that price you opened my eyes to some great drool-worthy used cars. However, the Octavia featured in the story really warmed my heart. It’s a classic case of getting the maximum for the minimum. In fact I’m looking for a Skoda Octavia which not only put over 160 bhp under my foot, but will also give me safety features the WagonR can only dream of. Thank you once again from the bottom of my heart. – Ravi Mahendra via email.
Dear Sir, I’ve been reading your magazine for the past few months, but apart from the reviews of pre-owned cars, what I liked most was the article ‘How to make your car look younger’ in the October issue of Driven magazine. It was really nice to know that I could really change the look of my car without spending much. I drive a hand-me-down Maruti Swift and immediately after reading the article. I drove to the nearest Auto accessory shop and searched for pink seat covers, but found nothing that’s even remotely feminine… but I settled for a black and red combo which is good enough for me. But what really satisfied my pink urge was that I could get custom decals on my car in pink! I also got an LED cabin light … all of which have changed the look of the car. My friends have been gushing about the changes and plan to get the exact same changes as I’ve done in my car. - Preeti Sinha, via email.
Dear Sir, I picked up your magazine in a news stand while on an official trip to Hyderabad. Wow what a magazine. Nowhere did I feel I was reading an Indian magazine. The pages, pictures - all stand out. It’s only while reading the stories and the Hindi punchlines in them, does one come back to reality. Content-wise it is very educating. I’m sure it will catch the imagination of the people. – Rudresh Kapur, Nagpur, via email.
Dear Sir, Your magazine features too many luxury cars. How many people have access to such expensive cars? Please have more ‘common man’ cars so that it becomes interesting for us. – Mohd. Jaffer, via email.
Dear Sir, I’m an off-road enthusiast and try to get my kicks in the cheapest manner possible. I bought your magazine thinking that a preowned car magazine would surely have a section for modifying cars and off-roading, but you totally ignore us like the other magazines who at least carry a page or two of off-roading events from time to time. Request you to carry articles on off-roading and preparing cars for such trips. – Michael Andrew, via email.

NEWS Jeep drives in with three models Jeep is expected to enter India officially, in the second part of this month. Its website and social media platforms have also been activated, though the website hasn’t got many details about its offerings. However, it’s expected that Jeep will introduce the Grand Cherokee diesel, the iconic Wrangler Unlimited models, and its SRT performance brand in India, with the flagship model being the Grand Cherokee SRT. The Grand Cherokee is powered by a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 motor that churns out a brutish 475bhp and massive 64.2kgm of torque, and is capable of going from 0-100kph in 5 seconds. The specialty of the Hemi engine is its Econo Mode which shuts down four-cylinders of the massive V8 to aid in better fuel economy. It also has a 6 piston Brembo brakes, a Selec-Trac gearing system, which has 5 drive settings like Auto, Sport and a Track mode which channels more than 70% of the engine power to the rear wheels.
Special ‘mobile’ service campaign by Mitsubishi service Mitsubishi cars. Mitsubishi has been having a bad run on the market with most of its cars withdrawn from the market and its service mostly touch and go, however, the cars themselves have proved to be more reliable than the company. The carmaker has come up with a ‘Service Caravan’ that will travel to different places across the country for the maintenance of Mitsubishi cars. In a much-appreciated move, Hindustan Motor Financial Corporation Limited (HMFCL) has recently started a ‘winter service campaign’ to

the activity. They will inspect the customer’s Mitsubishi vehicle, analyze what work needs to be done and guide the technicians to get the repairs or replacements done. The condition of the vehicle will be thoroughly scrutinized through a 30 point inspection schedule. Cars ranging from the Lancer to the Cedia, the Montero to the Outlander and even the Pajero SFX and Pajero Sport will be serviced during the campaign. HMFCL is also offering discounts and value added services during this activity with an aim of strengthening the customer relationship and delighting the customers through their services.

Faraday’s 1000bhp electric Supercar!
In a move that might have been influenced by the Supreme Court’s decision for ban Diesel cars over 2000cc, Mahindra has announced that it will launch electric versions of the Verito and the Maxximo in February. The electric variant of the Verito is fitted with a robust 29KW power train that emits fierce 39bhp power, it runs on advanced lithium ion batteries, and can cover 100km distances with seven hours of full charge. The highest attainable speed is 85km/h and the expected price range is around Rs. 9 lakhs.
Renault sales double Renault India recently said that its domestic sales surged over two-fold last month to 10,292 units compared with 3,956 units sold in December last year. The company has concentrated on increasing its Sales and Service network, which has borne fruit now. From a low of 15 service facilities around 5 years ago, to over 200 service centers now. Most of its sales have come from the high selling Duster, but its latest offering the cute little Kwid has caught the fancy of the buying public and is leading to a high market demand.
Mahindra may plonk smaller engines in its SUVs
The recent Supreme Court judgment banning the sale of Diesel vehicles with engine capacities above 2000cc from January to March 2016 has shocked major car companies with a lot of Diesel-powered cars in their offerings, and Mahindra is one of them. The company’s top sellers - the XUV500 and the Scorpio are powered by 2200cc Diesel engines and are affected by the ban. Though the ban is only for a 3 month period, the Supreme Court may as well extend the ban if there’s a marked difference in the air quality in Delhi.
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) which is held annually in Las Vegas, has always been quite showy, and perfectly so, as manufacturers show off their wild and wacky innovations of the future. The CES2016 was chosen as the platform to showcase the truly wild innovation by California-based Company, Faraday Future. Their futuristic concept is their racecar – with the working title of FFZERO1, which is being touted as the future of clean vehicles… and it doesn’t hurt that it looks like it’s come straight out of a Science Fiction movie. The interior will be an amalgamation of driver-centric technology and real-time data visualization - access to live images, and analysis of vehicle systems and predicting the driver’s intentions and needs. There is a Halo Safety System that supports the driver’s head and neck, and a helmet that feeds the driver water and oxygen. The instrument panel is also designed to gather biometric data about the driver. The car is constructed out of carbon fibre and an advanced highperformance racing suspension. It also boasts of advanced vehicle dynamic control and torque vectoring, reduced drag and battery cooling through an aero tunnel design. It also uses a Variable Platform Architecture, which involves a new battery structure that’s centrally placed for integrity and arranged into modular strings. The powertrain is made up of four Quad core motors with over 1000hp and the 0-60mph dash is over in 3 seconds. It also projects a top speed of over 200mph… that’s path-breaking for an electric car.

Mahindra, Tata, Maruti to develop EV and hybrid components The chief executive of Mahindra Reva, Mr. Arvind Matthew recently revealed that Mahindra, Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki will soon join forces to develop EV and hybrid components. This move is aimed at introducing a common standard as well as bring down the cost of electric vehicles as a whole. The plan will see common production of components and standards but separate software development in a bid to bring individuality to the vehicles. It is common practice nowadays for automakers to form alliance in developing platforms, components and even engines. This helps them share their knowledge pool as well as split development costs. In India one of the most famous alliances of this nature is the Renault-Nissan alliance which runs a common plant and even cross badges cars. This type of sharing model is also used by Fiat, Maruti Suzuki, GM and Tata with regard to Fiat’s 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine. It is being used by almost 20 Indian cars of various manufacturers.
Huge shift to petrol cars expected change the mindset of car users in India as time passes by. Diesel has always been thought of as a better fuel as far as mileage is concerned and it was an added advantage that the price was artificially kept low due to subsidies. Another factor is that, on an average, Diesel vehicles are almost 1 lakh more expensive than their Petrol-powered counterparts. The continuous fall of fuel prices, the narrowing gap of cost between petrol and Diesel, and the Delhi government coming down heavily on Diesel powered vehicles, are expected to
When people start seeing no value in buying Diesel cars, and shift to Petrol-powered cars in large numbers, manufacturer too will follow suit and offer more petrol units, leading to a massive shift the way cars are powered.

Demand for used vehicles rises post floods in Chennai
The flood waters that ravaged the city of Chennai last month have receded and left in their wake thousands of submerged cars that have either been abandoned, if they do not have any insurance, or have been piled up in some garage awaiting their turn to be seen by mechanics. It’s not easy though, as repairs take a long time and the cars can never be back to their original state.
Chennai has never been Used Car country, but people who have lost most of their possessions, are making a beeline to the used car dealers in a hope that they can get a bargain set of wheels that would put them back on the roads. Most of the demand is limited to small entrylevel cars, as car owners are suddenly left stranded without a car and their insurance claims taking a long time to settle. People
are making these purchases as temporary transport. While the sales of used cars in Chennai are not as high as in other cities, demand is expected to pick up as people clean-up, restock their homes, and then turn their attention to transport issues. Some luxury car makers are even offering to exchange their own brand flood hit cars for new cars of the same brand.
ethanol-fuelled vehicles may become a reality soon Vehicular pollution has reached alarming proportions, and the government is taking tough measures to contain it. In line with this, Union Transport Minister, Mr. Nitin Gadkari recently said that the government will soon announce a policy to allow automakers to manufacture flexible-fuel vehicles in the country, to curb pollution. This, he said, would not only lower pollution levels, but will also give a boost to the agricultural community. The minister called upon the sugar industry to ramp up ethanol
production as demand for it is likely to go up once flexi-fuel vehicles are introduced in India. “We are working on a policy on flexi-fuel vehicles. These vehicles can run entirely on ethanol, but also have option for petrol. I will make this announcement before January 26,” said Mr. Gadkari at the annual general meeting of the Indian Sugar Mills Association. Not much research or study is required to finalise the policy as countries like the US and Brazil are already implementing it, he said.

In July, the company had recalled 1.55 lakh units of Spark, Beat and Enjoy vehicles to fix problems related to a remote key-less entry accessory that allows opening of cars without a mechanical key. The affected vehicles will be repaired free of charge at Chevrolet’s authorized service centers across the country. Alternatively, customers can also contact their nearest Chevrolet dealership and schedule an appointment for vehicle inspection and correction. The company is working closely with their service network to make the entire inspection and correction exercise as smooth as possible.

SUBSTANCE & STYLE We try to find both in the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo
The BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo 320d could be one of the most interesting cars we have reviewed till date, simply because we don’t know what to make of it. On one hand, this is a car that is so easy to dislike due to its, well, cripplingly ugly design, but on the other hand, the 320d GT is very good at many things, which should make up for its offending appearance. But can substance really overshadow style, though? DRIVEN MAGAZINE I JANUARY 2016

H
ere in our country, there are two variants of the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, the other being the 328i GT. The Model with us today has a 2.0-litre diesel engine that is turbocharged to give 184bhp and 38kgm of torque, and if you can look past its association with the less glamorous fuel, it’s a fine power plant. It uses less fuel and is the obvious sensible engine choice for a car that requires someone to be sensible to actually buy it. The transmission is butter smooth and is highly intuitive at the same time. On the inside the cabin is simply cavernous. It really is interesting what a few millimetres of altered roofline will do to a vehicle. There was just so much air inside the vehicle, not to mention headspace. The driver

seating is higher than the regular 3 series for a better touring experience, even whilst driving about in our congested city roads, a vantage point as you can now see out of the vehicle easily and clearly. The rest of the interior is made of the same steadfast Bavarian formula that makes up every Beemer. The quality is top notch.
Equipment The GT comes with impressive 18-inch alloys, two-zone air-con, 6.5-inch control display and iDrive controller, Drive Performance Control with Eco Pro mode, two-part parcel shelf, automatic tailgate, active rear spoiler and sports seats and a wide range of customisable options, so check the car’s specifications against the list that a new car comes with.
Practicality GT’s practicality levels are very fanciful. The cars larger dimensions provide 520 litres of boot capacity. The boot has a large opening making loading and unloading easier. It also comes with anchor points and luggage nets which are very useful. There are plenty of cubby holes and door pockets as well.

Buying used Before you buy a used 3 Series GT, make sure you have a good look at the history report from the dealers. Also check for damages in the boot. Loading and unloading could blemish the upholstery and the carpets. Be sure to look under the car for any dings, scrapes or scratches as it is heavier than the saloon.

Selling
BMW 3 Series GT has a thrifty engine which offers 184bhp, 2.0 diesel motor mated to an 8 speed automatic. Service costs could contrast with the rivals. It also claims a combined mileage of 19 kmpl which is remarkable. Bear in mind the luxury and the weight it carries.
BMW 3 Series GT models should be a pain-free experience to sell. You can impress the buyer by telling them about the major strengths, like its practicality rather than outright performance. Contact your BMW dealer to display the car at the showrooms or advertise in this magazine and you are likely to create an interest with a potential buyer. If you have a good service history, which you will in any case, it’s more likely to sell quickly.

he Ssangyong Rexton is not a looker in any sense of the word, but it resembles the Mercedes GL-Class from some angles, and why not? It is based on some Mercedes designs and even its engine is from Mercedes. This full sized SUV has already made a mark and is Ssangyong’s best selling model all over the world, with good reason - it has immense road presence because of its size and boasts some serious muscle.
Equipment The RX7 comes with a 2.7 Litre 5-Cylinder diesel engine belting out 184bhp, which is routed through a Mercedes sourced automatic tiptronic AWD transmission to the four 16 inch tubeless radials on mag wheels. This
DRIVEN MAGAZINE I JANUARY 2016
Rexton is the top-end fully-loaded version and boasts of soft leather electrically adjustable seats, air bags, speed sensitive power steering, automatic rain sensing wipers, steering mounted controls, automatic air-conditioner, automatic headlights, Stability Control, Hill Descent Control, Cruise Control, ABS, heated outside rear view mirrors, SATNAV, touch screen infotainment system, keyless entry, sunroof etc. There’s space aplenty and seven seats, though the last row is only for children. The RX7 has a 252mm of ground clearance which takes care of off road excursions as well as rough roads, with the ride quality remaining excellent. There are a plethora of cubby holes for your travelling stash, while the boot is just about adequate.
Practicality The Ssangyong feels extremely comfortable, with the plush seats, the soft suspension and the super powerful air-conditioner, all contributing to making it that way. There are AC vents on all rows aiding in greater flexibility. There’s no hiding the huge dimensions, and despite the ABS and other electronic gadgets, there’s a lot of body roll. There is a lot of insulation and this keeps the cabin calm even at high speeds. The auto gearing leaves you a little dissatisfied, as it does not shift when you want it to, so overtaking at high speeds needs a little planning. There are 2 cup holders ahead of the gearshift and little storage spaces everywhere, drop down the last row of seats
and you have acres of space. Fold the second row and you can almost fit a small car in there! The engine puts out power from low down with hardly any turbo lag, and this helps you drive the huge bulk easily in the tight confines of the city.
Running costs A huge, heavy traditional body on frame SUV and good mileage figures do not go hand in hand, but it still returns around a combined 8 km to a litre of diesel, which is excellent considering its size. However, do not expect saloon-like maintenance figures, as driving a full-size SUV has its own set of problems. Mahindra service is touch and go, so not many marks there, however, since the RX7 is older Mercedes technology, it’s pretty reliable on all counts. Very little of the car is being made in India, so cost of spares is expectedly high, but their availability with Mahindra is a big plus.
Reliability The chassis, engine, gearbox and all technology is from Mercedes, so quality and reliability is very high and is on par with its competition. Older Mercedes’ have been known to last a lifetime, and it shouldn’t be any different with the RX7 too.
Buying used The RX7 has a powerful engine, is loaded with technology, and is extremely comfortable, so expect it to have been used extensively on intercity runs and high mileages, but since
these are very hard to come by, prices will be artificially kept on the higher side. One factor on your side is that since the Ssangyong badge is not associated with luxury and not many people will be looking for it in the first place, you can beat the price down. The SUV makes immense sense as a used buy as you get Mercedes technology at ‘paisa vasool’ prices.
Selling Ssangyong owners are generally in two minds, whether to let go of the RX or not. They are caught between their love for the luxuries it provides at a lower price point, and the badge that does not belong to the upper echelons of luxury. The RX7 loses nearly 40% of its new price depending on its condition, so you do not lose much. Keep service records on hand and keep the vehicle in top condition and you can expect the maximum.
Verdict The Ssangyong Rexton RX7 is the best valuefor-money full size AWD SUV you can buy. Feature for feature, it’s got more than its competition. The reputed Mercedes engines are very powerful, refined and a joy to use, while the high ground clearance makes it very comfortable and also makes it a good off road vehicle. It’s got everything a full size SUV should have at prices we can afford. If you can afford the pre-owned prices, just buy it.
Also Consider Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Honda CRV.

IMPRESSION
I
n 2007 where most small car buyers favoured hatchbacks, Maruti Suzuki made a strange decision to launch this saloon called SX4 in the Indian market. It was originally designed by Giorgetto Giudiaro in 2006. It’s certainly not handsome ‘man’ car as promoted, but does make up for it in other areas. The SX4 was initially equipped with 1.6 petrol engine with 102 bhp. It’s quite rev happy, and has reasonable pulling power which means you rarely have to work it hard, apart from maybe when joining fast flowing traffic from crawling speeds. In 2010 the diesel versions were available in the market. The cabin feels wellbuilt and offers plenty of comfortable space for the rear passengers. On long distance travels it irons out bumps and rough surfaces with ease. It is a convenient, practical and durable car for a family of five.
Equipment: The Maruti Suzuki SX4 is well equipped, with high standard specifications, including six airbags, four electric windows, a CD stereo,
automatic air conditioning and 15-inch alloy wheels. There are spaces to store away your water bottles in all four doors and can even be bought with leather seats.
Practicality: The boot is very large, all 515 litres of it, while the rear seats split and fold 60/40, which allows you to transport longer pieces of luggage and loads. The boot does have quite an evident load lip which is fairly high off the ground, so you could struggle with boxy items.
Running Costs: The SX4 is a decent value for money with good levels of standard equipment and low running costs. Servicing it at the dealership is low by industry standards, but few of the parts can be difficult to find. Maruti brand has always been trustworthy and promising, with low maintenance costs and this one is no different. Running costs can be high on the Diesel powered SX4s.
“ On long distance travels it irons out bumps and rough surfaces with ease “
Reliability: Maruti Suzuki has always had a good reputation for building reliable cars and the SX4 has been similarly impressive. Some of the interior plastics look dull and dated but otherwise it seems well put together. There have been complains of squeaks in the rear seat area. Apart from that we’ve not heard of any other major problems.
Buying used: There seems little reason to choose the SX4 over other major brands in the market, but being less popular will mean prices should be lower than expected. It is large, generously equipped, reliable and well-built – all of which make it an excellent pre-owned car buy. Watch out for suspension problems and ruptured dashboards.
DRIVEN MAGAZINE I JANUARY 2016
“ Maruti Suzuki has always had a good reputation for building reliable cars and the SX4 has been similarly impressive ”
“ It is a unique breed of car with very low cost of ownership and peace of mind only a Maruti can give “ Selling: While the Maruti Suzuki SX4 is not quite popular, the car is far less interesting to many buyers. Therefore you could find it hard to sell one, although Maruti True Value dealers might be interested in well maintained cars with fewer kilometers on the odometer.
Verdict: The SX4 is a surprisingly appropriate and comfortable car to drive and own. Not only is its ride impressive, but its small turning circle makes tight manoeuvring in the city confines easy to live with. It continues to perform superbly in the day to day run abouts and faithfully returns 18 kmpl, which is impressive considering its sheer size and tall profile. It is a unique breed of car with very low cost of ownership and peace of mind only a Maruti can give. It is a great buy.

H
yundai entered the Indian market in 1997 with the car under the name of Santro which was produced in Chennai. Its primary competitor at that time was the popular Maruti Suzuki Zen. The Santro was a success due to its distinctive styling, features and good pricing but left us with mixed reviews. In 2003 it was upgraded with style and technology, and was called the Santro Xing. It enjoyed great success in the market and made Hyundai a household name. It has dominated t he Indian market since then. Hyundai Santro Xing is one of the cheapest cars in the Indian market. So expectations of comfort and performance shouldn’t be too high, but it is very easy to drive around the city and is effortless to park, which makes it exceptionally good value for money just for the peace of mind it gives. The Santro Xing comes with 1.1 litre engine producing 62 bhp, mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox. Due to the compact dimensions and good turning circle of the car, it handles like a dream.
Equipment: The Santro Xing is equipped with electric front windows, CD player with 4 speakers, air-conditioning, leather trim for the steering, remote central locking, alloy wheels and front fog lamps. You also get basic front seat adjustments for a better driving position.
Practicality: The boot is very small, but the back seat splits 50/50 and folds for carrying larger items and

luggage. The rear speakers sit parallel with the parcel shelf which limits the space available for storage. On the inside there is a generous amount of head room but lacks a bit on the leg room in the back seats.
Running Cost: Santro Xing is a very cheap car to run. Servicing is every 10,000 km and is reasonably priced. The car is capable of returning more than 20Km to a litre of petrol, thanks to the lightweight body. But the automatic versions are a bit expensive to services and thirsty on the fuel.
Reliability:
For something designed to feel at home in the city, that’s the best compliment you can pay to the little Hyundai. It looks jolly and should cost very little to own and run. Do keep in mind that Hyundai has discontinued this model and finding parts could become difficult even in Hyundai dealerships.
Also Consider: Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Chevrolet Spark Tata Nano -MA
Hyundai’s typically reliable Korean engineering standards ought to ensure that problems are few with unlimited mileage to clock. It has proven quite strong over the years on the Indian roads, five-year warranty means it’ll be a long time before it becomes your problem anyway.
Buying used: Santro Xing is still a favourite ‘buy’ word in the used car market. If you can find one that’s a few years old, buy it. It should offer a decent saving over a new car, but owners tend to hang onto them until the warranty expires. Look out for engine rattles and squeaks to avoid routine visits to the garage.
Selling: It isn’t difficult to sell a Santro Xing, especially if you maintain it in good condition. Replacing its tyres with new ones, maintaining the interiors clean and a visit to a service station will make it more appealing for buyers.
Verdict: It might be small, but the Santro Xing is still happy to take on long journeys in its stride.

t fits the proverbial ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ adage perfectly - it looks like a ‘normal’ car but tugs at your heart strings just standing still. Its hawk-like headlights and a huge grill looking both menacing and exciting at the same time, partly due to the styling and partly due to the huge size of the car. The moment you lay eyes on it, your mind goes blank... dimaak khaali, washed of all its thoughts, and you’re strangely focused on just one thing. You just keep exclaiming ‘wow’ again and again in your mind... guaranteed to bring the toughest of men down to their knees, until someone starts car and your body starts shaking in excitement at the wonderful noises emitting out of its rear... and the car hasn’t even moved an inch yet. At this point, all petrol heads across five streets would leave whatever they’re doing and tune their ears to the wonderful noises... such are the engine growls and exhaust notes of the Italian beauty carrying the trishul on the bonnet. In fact, so pronounced are the growls, that those lucky enough to be near the car, can feel the vibrations in their bodies and probably feel that their glasses and phones could shatter at any moment. Even to the casual observer with no interest in cars, it will be 100% per cent clear that this menacing looking Maserati belongs to the

race track, but it doesn’t look odd like the other biggies like the Ferrari or the Lamborghini, which would look completely out of place on the road. Our GT looks like it belongs to the road, the styling oozes sheer luxury in a very traditional sense, and is stunning from any angle. It’s amazing how Maserati managed to inject large doses of great looks and racetrack burning performance into the GT. It’s a living example of ‘Neighbour’s envy, owner’s pride’. This neighbour can be anyone... even the guy driving a top-of-the-line luxury car - who will positively drool over this one. An ultimate ‘I’ve arrived’ statement which you don’t have to make, as it makes enough noises on your behalf. Open the door and you enter another world of luxury that pampers you no end, with coloured leather seats, fine wood trim everywhere, all creature comforts and modern technology you’d ever need - features like Bluetooth, Navigation, an excellent Bose Audio system are all standard - but what catches your eye is that it’s a true four-seater - not a cramped afterthought but supremely comfortable seating for two in the rear! Other luxury marquees always sacrifice rear seating, in fact, it is extremely rare to find comfortable seating for four in a luxury sports-tourer, which makes the
Maserati GT a great highway-runner for the whole family, it offers the best of both worlds. It is also very comfortable to drive, with the ride being quite supple, leading to a relaxed driving experience... what else could one ask for? It’s up there with the Jaguar XK and the Mercedes SL in terms of a luxury sports car seating four, and overall satisfaction levels. The only thing that is a let-down, if we nitpick, is that there’s hardly any space for your saamaan, just 261 litres... but then, who in their right mind would buy a Maserati to cram it with luggage? To its credit, the company does offer optional luggage sets specially tailored to make the most of the boot space, plus side storage compartments alongside the rear seats for small personal items. Another
nifty thing is this cute electric gizmo to aid entry and exit to and from the rear seats, the power system for both front seats drives them forward automatically when the backrest is tilted front... neat. The heart of the matter is its Ferrari sourced 4.7 litre V8 engine that is forever threatening to unleash its 433 horses... this eagerness results in a growl that’s just out of this world... and is indeed a wonderful experience. As expected, you seat low down and the engine responds to the paddle shifts with the energy of a caged man-eater eager to tear anyone nearby. The Maserati GT is not a light car, tipping the scales at almost 1,800 kilograms, but the 433 horses make it as agile as a gazelle at medium speeds, but the open road or a race track is where it comes to its
own, with each shift pushing you deeper into the wonderfully padded seats and plastering your face with an ear to ear grin... exactly the reason why one spurges 1.2 - 1.5 Crores on it when new. If you are a confirmed gear head and have the money to spare, but are undecided on the choice of a performance car, we suggest you just listen to the engine growl and exhaust notes. We guarantee that all the specs will be a distant blur... you’d put in the money pronto and zip out with the car. There are other cars that are in the same league, but the exclusivity the Maserati GT provides cannot be measured on any scale... very very far from the kitna dete hai and the kitna hai crowd. However, since the Maserati Grantourismo has been around

Be warned however, that it doesn’t depreciate as much as the other luxury marquees, as it’s quite rare, and it’s not an easy car to either live with or maintain. Exclusivity always comes at a price, and with the Maserati GT, it is astronomical spares, service and repair costs. How does upwards of 1 Lakh plus sound... for a regular service? few dealers in the country, be prepared to take the car to another state for service. Mileage is another matter, as the 433 thoroughbred horses need to be fed regularly and as thoroughbreds go, you don’t really keep a count of how much you feed them, but just for the record, the Maserati zips for just 7 kilometres on a litre of petrol, which is quite good for the huge engine and the oodles of power on tap. Reliability of its running gear is well proven, with no problems reported and like all other
Maserati models, the car is covered by a three year unlimited mileage warranty, backed by a full roadside assistance service lasting three years and covering the 5 major cities, so as a pre-owned buy, it pays to invest in a 1-2 yr model with company warranty left. After that, you’ll be on your own, so be prepared - and do not even think of buying one without its complete service history, or in some cases, imported left hand drive models... it’s just not worth the risk. Despite the minuses, do remember that you’re getting your hands on a very rare, exotic sports car that oozes luxury from every crevice of its immaculately built body, and is even today one of the prettiest cars in the world... ah, and the sound it makes is absolutely mental... whoever said money can’t buy happiness, did not have enough money! - BJ

- 0.8Liter / 47 bhp - 5 Gears Manual - 20 kmpl - Rs. 3.13 - 3.76 lakhs - Rs. 2.60 - 2.95 lakhs - 20%
Buying Used The Eon is a great looker in the entry-level segment, but owners quickly grow out of it and want to buy better cars, so keep looking out for it without getting desperate, and you’ll be rewarded suitably.
Buying Used In pure pre-owned, value for money terms, the Alto doesn’t make any sense, as it’s expensive, but that’s only half the story. Well kept Altos hold their value for years to come. It’s a great car with great resale value.
Selling The car is a stylish alternative to the leader. It’s got oodles of appeal and is quite desirable, but beware people buy this for the looks, so keep it looking good, without scratches and good interiors for buyers to pick it up.
Selling The Alto is one of the easiest cars to sell on the quick as there’s a huge demand in the pre-owned market. Beware of dealers who will beat the price down. Classified ads in our magazine can get genuine buyers and a better price.
Practicality It’s a small car, and interiors are cramped, with very little boot space. Power from the 800cc engine is low, so the 1 litre engine is the one to go for. Top versions come with tilt steering, airbag, stereo with USB, keyless entry etc.
Practicality There can be nothing better in the practicality department. It’s inexpensive to buy, to maintain, to run, to service, to sell. What more can you ever want? Of course you have to put up with cramped interiors, basic interiors, low boot space.
Running costs The Eon returns over 20 kilometres to the litre, the LPG option further stretches it, so the cost of running it is extremely low. However, Hyundai Service and Spares are on the higher side compared to the market leader.
Running costs The Alto is a very easy car to maintain, primarily because of its low cost spares and it almost never breaks down, provided you service it regularly. A little care goes a long way. Mileage is in the 20s for every litre. The CNG makes it cheaper still.
Reliability Hyundai engines have proved themselves on the Indian roads, and reliability is quite high, with very few problems reported. By and large, owners are quite a happy lot.
Reliability Altos keep going on and on and on without any complaint. They have proved themselves from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. People tend to drive them hard, often overloaded with people, luggage, machinery - you name it.
Pros Great modern Styling, powerful engine, low running costs, good interiors, good extras. Cons Cramped interiors, service network, cost of spares
Pros Great service network, low running costs, cheap spares, easy to drive. Cons Bland design, bland interiors, cramped interiors, jarry ride.
Verdict The Eon looks great and makes more power from its 3-pot engine that the Alto but feels underpowered in real world use, while its gear shifter vibrates violently while idling. The Alto is a plain Jane but its reliability has become legendary, add to it the low costs during service and service network and resale value and..... Our Choice: Maruti Suzuki Alto 800

5/6 Manual 13 kmpl P / 20kmpl D Rs. 8.90 - 14.85 Lakhs Rs. 4.95 - 10.80 Lakhs 30%
Buying Used The Ecosport is a relatively new entrant and preowned ones are hard to find. The 1.0 Ecoboost petrol engine is a technological marvel but it’s mostly the diesel versions that are available. Good engines, compact size make it a great buy.
Buying Used Duster is the leader in its category and is highly sought after, even in the pre-owned segment. Used ones will be quite expensive due to demand, but it still makes a good buy as it will retail its value for a long time to come.
Selling Those who buy the Ecosport do not usually sell, unless it’s for a bigger, better SUV. If you’ve decided to sell, then you are assured of a good price if you’ve maintained the car well and have the service records.
Selling The high selling Renault is loved by entire families and probably their neighbours too, so selling would be last on their minds. Those who sell will do it for the great value is gives back to the owner.
Practicality The little Ford gives the owner a sense of driving an SUV with the running costs of a small car. The high ground clearance, ease of drive, great ride quality all make it a great urban SUV, but the narrow dimensions mean the 5th passenger is not welcome.
Practicality The Duster is a pretty long and wide vehicle. Highway runs with five people are more than comfortable, as is ground clearance that will keep the underside safe from those mild off road excursions. Mileage is also great.
Running costs With mileages of 14-19kmpl from its petrol engines and 21kmpl from its diesel engine, the car doesn’t tax its owner. Ford spares and service are comparatively on the higher side, but it’s more than offset by the great mileages.
Running costs The segment leader is a great performer and offers good comfort. Running costs in terms of returning great fuel economy is good, but owners report problems with service.
Reliability The Ecosport is a new car, so we do not see any problems cropping up. The car does take a certain amount of abuse, but do remember that it’s not a proper SUV... it’s a soft-roader. Treat it that way and it’ll serve you for a long time.
Reliability Renault, though an unknown name, has established its name on the minds of people with this great piece of equipment. It’s durable mechanicals have proved themselves in India.
Pros Small size great for city, contemporary styling, good petrol engines, good performance, equipment, fuel economy. Cons Interior space at a premium, boot space on the lower side, not everyone likes its nose design.
Pros Huge boot area, tough build, wonderful ride quality, ground quality, fuel economy. Cons Severe turbo lag, bland interiors, too many essentials missing.
Verdict The two competitors are as diverse as chalk and cheese, but are vying for the same buyer. The Ecosport is good on most of the features and comfort, while the Duster looks like a proper SUV due to its size and is good on highway runs. The little Ford is priced lower due to excise duty cut since it is under 4 metres in length. Our Choice: Renault Duster

Buying Used The 7 Series range spans 3 to 6 litres performance is earth shattering. It’s the ultimate luxury ride to show you’ve arrived, without having to scream it out... and at around half the cost of the original it makes a great luxury bargain.
Buying Used Mercedes occupies a very special place in India. Politicians, leaders, businessmen and top professionals prefer the Merc for the image rub-off it gives them. Generally chauffer driven, look for a full service history to rule out damage.
Selling There are a lot of upwardly mobile professionals and businessmen who would jump at opportunities to own a 7-Series. Advertising it in the right medium, for example this magazine, is the key to getting a higher price.
Selling Again, a lot of people in the point above, are constantly on the lookout for a ‘Special’ Mercedes, so you will not have any problem whatsoever in giving it away for a newer model. In fact Mercs command a slight premium just because of the badge.
Practicality The 7 promises one thing in large doses, and that is luxury. It’s a huge car, so it’s as spacious as your living room, and boasts of a great 3D audio system, excellent ride and is packed with safety features.
Practicality Owners generally accomplish a lot of work from those back seats, nothing to beat the feeling of a luxurious office on wheels. Power, space, comfort, richness.. it has got everything in large doses, so practical it is.
Running costs You do not buy luxury and crib about running costs. However, for the size and weight, it returns a decent fuel economy. Expect high maintenance costs as service and spares cost an arm and a leg.
Running costs The S-Class has a reputation to protect, it is expensive to buy, expensive to run, expensive to maintain and will reward you by looking like a million bucks when you drive around in it. Costs are typically high.
Reliability Owners generally do not use these cars as their prime vehicles, but as a show stopper and for special occasions, so mileages will generally be very low and hence the reliability factor is very high.
Reliability Generally used a lot for travelling within the city and hence not used as much as other cars, so mileages are generally low and hence the reliability factor is very high.
Pros Powerful engines, space like a living room, ultra-plush ride and handling, large boot, top quality cabin. Cons Hard to faults in an upmarket ride like this, but turning circle is huge.
Pros Amazing interiors, superb ride and handling, packed with technology, top quality cabin. Cons Very expensive to maintain.
Verdict The Beemer and the Merc, both are full sized luxury sedans, and both have enough luxurious amenities to rival the presidential palace, probably. With so much power on tap, features like braking distance, safety features in the event of a crash etc., take centre-stage. Both of them have got serious aspirational value, but the Merc is available substantially cheaper. Our Choice: Mercedes S-Class

- 5/6-Speed - 17kmpl/22 kmpl - Rs. 8.20 -13.80 - Rs. 4.10 - 10.20 - 50%
Buying Used Vento has a slight edge over the Japanese as far as build quality is concerned, while the engines are top class. The design, though a little plain Jane, is good enough for everyday use. The diesel variant, especially is very good.
Buying Used Older versions had a little bland interiors and thin tyres, but the newer ones are well equipped. Petrols shed more of their original price than the diesels, but both are excellent in terms of ride quality, reliability and fuel efficiency.
Selling The Vento has a premium image and sellers usually do not have a problem selling it. However, if the car has been thrashed around, or does not have service history, it will fetch a lower price.
Selling People are wary of high costs of Honda service and spares, so petrol City’s will not get a great welcome, but if the car is kept in good condition, you can get a good price. However, exchanging it for a new one would fetch better prices.
Practicality The diesel Vento makes a lot of sense as it is not only better than its petrol variants, but is also fuel efficient. Solid build quality and its versatility make it an excellent buy. Handling is a little iffy, but it makes a good overall pre-owned buy.
Practicality Engaging engines, good amount of equipment, great interiors, lots of space, excellent fuel efficiency all together make the City a very practical family sedan. Diesels, though very fuel efficient, are quite noisy but make a lot of sense in the long run.
Running costs The German marquee is not known for its fuel efficiency, however, the Vento is on par with the City, returning around 20kmpl. Dealer network, spares and service costs are of concern. It does everything like it’s supposed to. Very good.
Running costs With mileages hovering around the 20s, the City is a class leader in the fuel consumption fight, as noted above, costs are a bit higher because of the slightly premium feel, but it does not need much maintenance in the first place.
Reliability Vento is a well-built car compared to the City, but there are frequent complaints about the injectors on the diesel version, which VW blames on bad fuel. No long-term issues.
Reliability The Honda City has proved itself in almost all countries around the world and is known for its durability, however, on our roads, things tend to fall apart. Well maintained ones serve you for decades.
Pros Roomy interior, superb ride and handling, top quality cabin, very versatile. Cons Dull styling, noisy diesel engine.
Pros Roomy interior, superb ride and handling, large boot, top quality cabin, excellent choice of engines. Cons Diesel engines are quite noisy, flimsy build quality, low on head room.
Verdict Both the cars are neck and neck as far as features, styling, fuel efficiency etc, are concerned. Both their engines are excellent but the diesels are very noisy. The rear seat space and quality are in another league and keep the passengers in reasonable comfort... but what tilts the decision in the Vento’s favour is the solid build quality which the Japanese car cannot match. Our Choice: Volkswagen Vento

We not only get it much cheaper than the original price of the car, but will also save on new car additions like road tax, registration, a little on insurance, additional features/gadgets the owner might have added etc... all these cost quite a bit when added up. It is also bedded in, so the risks of having to properly ‘running-in’ the car is taken

care of too. A major factor in buying a preowned car is that we can think of owning our dream cars, or even a luxury marquee beyond our reach, that too at the cost of a new sedan we can actually afford! Talk about a multiplier effect! These exclusive new rides lose their value by as much as 50% due to depreciation in the first 2-3 years and make excellent value for our limited budgets. Another reason we get them for that less is that the people who bought them new would have lost interest i n them, as they are no more exclusive a n d
trade up to newer more exclusive models! Yet another reason is that most of these cars are bought on Company names, and are sold every few years, or even every year, to save on taxes. We know companies in India who often buy the same models as the cars being sold! Only newer... and a majority of them are Innovas, as they hold their value quite well when sold within one or two years, and they have an updated model every time - smart isn’t it? The main advantage for the buyer is that, though these exclusive rides depreciate nearly half their value in 2-3 years, they hold their value quite well after 4-5 years and do not depreciate much further, making them prime candidates to be sold away after
I know Iam not the first but do you really care?
we use them for a few years! By then ‘newer’ pre-owned models enter the market. If we play our cards well, we can keep this cycle going on and keep driving better cars for a long, long time... without being crorepatis. A couple of decades ago, buying a pre-owned car was riddled with uncertainties, as proper maintenance was unheard of, but these days we can get proper service histories at the touch of a button... and in any case, these marquees have to necessarily be serviced at authorised centres to keep extended warranties intact. If you’re a first-time car buyer, look for cars that are not more than 3-4 years old, because there might not be many kilometers on the clock, and you get advantage of the maximum
depreciation. So if you decide to sell it 2 years later, you’ll get back almost all the money you’ve paid for it. Steer clear of rides more than 5 years old, not that they will not be reliable, but because as cars age, there are more things that can go wrong, and they’re not exactly cheap to fix, are they? There is a reason why leading pre-owned car companies and dealers do not entertain cars older that a maximum of 8 years, as that’s about the time ripe for major components to go kaput. Think gearbox, clutch, engine... the works. But then, the more adventurous among us may beat the price down further and get ourselves rock-bottom deals on luxury rides! The risk of a major failure is always there, but this too can be
minimised with a simple trip to a reputed used car dealer, whether independent or companybacked, and get a thorough inspection done. They will charge you for it, but the 150-180 point inspection checklist leaves nothing to chance and will tell you in detail of what you might need to change and when. With this Inspection Report in our hands, we now have complete knowledge of the health of the car and any potential issues that may crop up. The money spent for the inspection will be your best bet, as you can narrow down on the healthiest car, hit the road and really enjoy the ride, soaking all the attention of friends and foes, and start living your dream... until you decide on your next metallic beauty, that is. There’s really no end to this! - BJ

Beware of flood damaged cars
T
he recent floods in Chennai has sent warning signs all over the country, specially the states abutting Tamilnadu, with good reason too, as the pre-owned car lovers are worried that they would unwittingly be buying these flood-damaged cars. We’ve all seen television images of people moving to safe places in boats, while avoiding cars submerged in water with only their roofs barely visible from the outside. In normal circumstances, even a small spill of water on the seats is enough to give the car owner nightmares, as it takes forever to dry it, and one can only imagine these totally submerged cars, with water inside every nook and cranny. While water corrodes metal and weaken the monocoque chassis of modern cars, it is not the worst enemy of a submerged car, it is the mud and slush that make their way into interior spaces and corners and eat into the joints and is almost impossible to clean. Also bear in mind that water enters all areas like the engine - through the air filter, transmission, steering systems, bearings, electronic circuits, fuel tank and fuel lines, clutches, brakes, batteries… in short everywhere. According to salvage experts, if a car is in water up to its dashboard, the car is an insurance write-off, as it cannot be

repaired economically. Which means that the money required to repair it would exceed its new car price. Which begs a question…. What happens to these ‘unrepairable’ cars? Insurance companies report that if the cars are covered by Comprehensive insurance, they negotiate and pay the owners a fair amount after decreasing the depreciation on the cars and then sell the car to junkyards. If you thought that’s the end of life for these ‘scrapped’ cars, you’re mistaken. In India nothing goes to waste, even scrapped cars. There’s a huge parallel economy running in the dealing of used car parts in every corner of India. Everything from door locks and meter consoles to gear boxes and even engines are available. Selling used spares is only one route taken by unscrupulous dealers. The other one is simpler but dangerous and lifethreatening for those who buy these cars later. When insurance companies sell lots of these unrepairable cars to scrap dealers,
they just employ an army of workers who remove the seats, fittings and quickly dry out the car, seats and interiors, get mechanics to dry out the fuel systems, replace the engine oils and deodorize the interiors. Then it’s just a matter of putting in new upholstery and quickly get the car into the used car market. If it looks and drives good, it should be good enough, right? You can’t be more wrong on this one. We have to understand that water degrades anything it comes in contact with. We have to also understand that the exterior painted surface is the least of our problems. Cars are not painted on the insides, the underside, and in some cased the boot area too. Trouble is, most of our cars these days are monocoque, and any rust anywhere means the body gets
used in it, they might be trying to cover up something. The same bad, musty smell we covered above. Walk away.
weakened and when it is stressed, like in an accident or when you push it hard, like on the highway, it just gives in and is potentially dangerous to its occupants… meaning our families. So what are the things to look for in a submerged vehicle put for resale? We list here the areas to look for and the signs that give away the car’s underwater adventures. 1. Seatbelt: Take a test drive, and put the seat belt on. If the belt does not come out cleanly, or makes strange noises, it’s a sign that there’s a lot of either rust, or mud and dirt in the spooling mechanism. A sure sigh of a flooded car. 2. Bad Smell: However good a car looks, there’s only so much cleaning that can be done when dealers want to quickly put it in the used car market. Dealers want to make the most profit and will most certainly re-use the carpets, seats etc., of the submerged car, leading to a damp smelling interior. Put your nose to work. Smell the carpets, seats… everything. If the interior of the car doesn’t smell like a ‘normal’ car, walk away. 3. Good Smell: We’ve all used scents, airfresheners or car perfumes to keep the interiors of the cars smelling fresh. This is generally limited to the dashboard area of the car. If the car being sold is smelling too good or there’s too much perfume
4. Boot area: Open the boot, or the dickey, as we call in India. If the separator board covering the spare wheel is warped out of shape, it’s a sure sign of flooding and drying it. You can safely walk away from it. 5. Meter console: If you see moisture filling up the meter console, you can safely deduce it’s had a bad affair with water recently. Meters are very difficult to clean and dry. 6. Air Conditioner: Among the most difficult components to repair in a submerged car are the A/C compressor and the alternator. Both have a lot of parts and have a lot of wire wound tightly, and getting water out of it is not easy. Most of them fail because of mineral deposits, but if they miraculously work, they’ll make a lot of noises. Look out for these. 7. Tough to reach areas: Small, hard to reach places are very difficult to clean and it’s these areas that need a look over, as the debris of the flood waters would still be lodged in these areas. A sure sign of a submerged car. 8. Watermarks: Water has an uncanny habit of leaving its mark anywhere it goes. Whether flooding hills or valleys, you
can see its marks everywhere. Now look for the same in the car too. Completely submerged cars will not have this, but half submerged ones are sure to have it. Look closely at the paint job and you can see a slight difference in colour. 9. Rust: Water and exposed metal are not exactly good friends… which is good for us, as we can see their fight and the resultant rust wherever they come in contact. The areas to look for are the joints, screws, inside doors, boot area, seat rails etc., where rust can be seen. If these areas are rusted, there will be more areas that are inaccessible, where rust will have a free run. 10. Price: Even if all the tell-tale signs are missed, if the price of the car is too low to be true, then there’s something inherently wrong with the car and the seller wants to get rid of it quickly. It makes sense to go through the sniffing around again. - Blessing Johnson

CAN WE BUY ACCIDENT CARS?
C
hecking if a car was involved in an accident is like trying to find out your girl’s ‘boyfriend history’. The facts are so well hidden, and you are smitten by what you see, that you just cannot find out or ignore the tell-tale signs, until one fine day it dawns on you… by that time it’s usually too late to do anything worthwhile. So is it safe to buy accident vehicles? There’s no easy answer to this question, but before we go into the nitty-gritty of whether to buy cars involved in accidents or not, consider this… In India over 56 road accidents happen every hour snuffing the lives of 16 people. In the year 2014, India registered 4.89 lakh road accidents which killed 1.40 lakh and injured 4.93 lakh people. Of these, cars, jeeps and taxis are involved in 1,11,218 accidents, resulting in the deaths of 26,038 people and leaving 1,13,413 injured. That’s a huge number, which is only climbing higher due to increased usage of four-wheeled transport. What do you suppose happens to all the vehicles involved in accidents? We Indians love to hoard... we do not throw anything. Don’t believe me? Look around your house - you’ll find a hundred things that you haven’t used in a long time, but hadn’t had the heart to throw out! So do you seriously think that all those ‘accident cars’ are just junked? Good Lord… no, there are various ways of ‘getting rid’ of the unwanted crumpled and
DRIVEN MAGAZINE I JANUARY 2016
twisted metal on wheels. More often than not, if the car in question is fully insured, and is damaged beyond repair, the insurer generally does not pay the full amount and offers the owner an amount much lower than the ‘full insurance’ cover and also offers him the accident car. Most owners accept this arrangement, as they can later sell the car as scrap. Scrap dealers who are in every city, buy these accident cars on the cheap, salvage the good parts and put them up for sale. These scrap dealers are where owners of ageing budget cars or discontinued cars, go to for their spares. A couple of decades ago, when I owned an old Premier 118 NE, I had a problem of a leaking brake. Turned out that the grease nipple was faulty and spares were not to be found, but a trip to the ‘specialist’ scrap dealer solved the problem. Even today, you can find everything – from speedometers and complete dashboards, to bumpers and full engines of various vehicles in these ‘specialist’ scrap yards. While this is heartening, not every accident car ends up this way. Many of these ‘scrap car’ buyers employ an army of workers – denters, painters, auto electricians, upholsterers and mechanics, to bring the cars back to life. They make more money putting these repaired vehicles back on the road. We’ve seen cars in workshops in Chhattisgarh working on a Maruti Wagon R with the whole
of its left side missing. The chassis was being beaten into shape to re-weld onto the body. After a coat of primer and a good paint job, no one would be any wiser. Accident is one thing, but one whole side dented and re-welded onto the body is a disaster waiting to happen… and this is not an isolated case. And if you think new cars in showrooms are in mint condition, then think again. New cars are transported across the country by road and mishaps do happen while loading and unloading. What do you think happens to these unregistered cars? When on a data gathering drive, we visited a private garage for pre-owned cars, where in one corner, was an Alto, sans seats or trim being given a coating of primer. What drew us to it was the yellow T/R number ‘plate’ still stuck to it. When goaded, the painter said that showrooms give them these cars sometimes to take out dents and make them look new again! This was one extreme case, and had we not seen it ourselves, we wouldn’t have believed it. Whatever the case, you are not escaping from the ‘accident car’ even when buying new! Not all cars end up this way, of course, some are repaired at Authorised Service Centres, using genuine spare parts. These genuinely ‘refurbished’ cars are infinitely better than the re-built cars at privately garages, as they are rebuilt by people who know these cars inside out and use new parts, so longevity of the
repaired cars is guaranteed. Some well re-built vehicles drive so well, that it’s difficult to believe they are ‘accident’ vehicles, most re-built vehicles are repaired quite well, since the aim is to dupe the buyer, but an expert or a trusted mechanic can easily spot the tell-tale signs of damage. What we’re getting at is, that if you’re in the market for a pre-owned car, there is a very high chance of you buying an accident car…while this in itself is not a problem, do not be duped into paying more for them. You could get them for almost half the prevailing used car prices! Stay with reputed free standing used car dealers or manufacturer attached pre-owned car outlets and you’d fare okay, though even this is no guarantee of a completely fair deal. At least if you are not informed of the accident status, you could take them to court, since everything’s on paper and they stand a lot to lose from negative publicity. An acquaintance of ours recently bought a car from a company operated pre-owned outlet, where a 2011 diesel car was offered for just 3 lakhs. He was told that the car was involved in a small accident – that is was reversed into a wall. What we found out later was that it was involved in a front three-quarters accident. The happy ending was that the car drove impeccably, and buyer owned a popular car at almost half of a similar pre-owned nonaccident model!
Since there are no laws protecting you from being duped, it pays to be on the guard. Always, we repeat, always get cars checked by your trusted mechanic. They can spot an accident car instantly, can weigh the pros and cons and tell you present & potential problems and also whether you can safely put your money on it. Always check the service history with the Authorised Service Station, which can reveal some secrets, if not already revealed to you. In the end do not be swayed by what people say. Everyone will dissuade you from approaching a car involved in an accident, but the savings are potentially huge, and if the repairing process is done carefully, it’s worth the risk. You can haggle the price according to the severity of the accident – rear-ended cars, small frontal damaged ones, dents and scratches on the side etc., are okay, and their structural rigidity is intact, but steer clear from ones with serious damage to the underside or the roof of the car. That said, popular cars are more likely to be repaired and sold off than low selling, unpopular ones, so use your new-found knowledge and get maximum value for your not so perfect pre-owned rides, put in a little more money and you’ll have a good vehicle for much less. To sum up, there are worse cars than the ones involved in accidents. Surprised? Consider
cars that have been submerged in floods – water enters every inch of the car and spoils everything… the body, electronics, upholstery, meters - everything. Rusted cars are another cause of worry, as these corrosive spots are like tips of icebergs… there is always more inside that we cannot see. All these should be avoided like the plague. How can you spot these? Well, that’ll be dealt with in future issues. So keep reading Driven. - BJ
