Our tastes are changing… in fact, we want everything! We want better cars with more equipment, better looks and reasonably good performance, yet shouldn’t cost the earth. The bookings of Renault’s Kwid point to this change in our wish lists. On that topic, the Kwid’s distant cousin, the Datsun Go-Cross also shows a lot of promise. It ticks all the right boxes… now if it is priced right, we would have a lot to choose from. Continuing our USP of testing used cars, this month we have checked the Range Rover Vogue, the grand old lady is still the epitome of luxury, in fact, we’re calling it the 5-star SUV. We also have the Mercedes Benz B-Class on our hands, and as Mercs go, this B is also up there with the rest, but caters to a completely different set of drivers, enthusiastic drivers who do a lot of intercity travelling…. It’s a worthy sports tourer! Also tested this month, is the little Maruti Alto which has spared no effort in impressing us. We tried every kind of terrain to stop it in its tracks, but it came out with flying colours every time! No wonder it’s the largest selling car in India today, whether new or pre-owned. Moving away from the 5-seaters, we also tested the large family favourite, the Honda Mobilio, which breaks the myth that people carriers should look like vans…. In fact we’ve found it the most car-like among all 7-seaters, do read and enjoy. On the other end of the scale is the ultra-luxurious Bentley Azure, which we found was as if from another planet… truly, we get what we pay for, and the Bentley makes immense sense as a pre-owned buy. Who cares if it is used? It is still an eyeball grabber and the ultimate “I’ve arrived” statement. We also realized that most people sell away their cars as they grow tired of their cars. We explore ways in which you can make your car look younger… without burning a hole in your pocket! We’ve listed 6 small changes that will not only make your car look new, but also dissuade you from selling away your car! More stories are in the pipeline in the coming months, so please do not miss reading an issue. We want to reiterate that Driven is a magazine for you, the reader, and we’re ready to make it more interesting in tune with your wants. All you need to do is tell us what you want covered. You could even write to us and tell us about your automobile memories…. None of us forgets our first, whether it’s our love or our car!

Mazda wants to make piston engine history For the last eight years, a team of 50 engineers has slaved away on Mazda Motor Corporation’s signature rotary engine, seeking a breakthrough for the unique design Mazda had championed for decades, almost alone in its enthusiasm. The engine, code-named 16X, still hasn’t reached the performance targets that would make it suitable to power a successor for Mazda’s iconic RX-7 and RX-8 sports cars. Yet the small Japanese automaker refuses to give up on the technology despite its limited R&D funds, Mazda CEO Masamichi Kogai told reporters recently. “We have a dream that one day, this design with a rotary engine will achieve a level that customers will accept,” Kogai said . “We have rotary engine fans,” he added, “and they will not be satisfied if we have the

same exact rotary engine from before.” Mazda unveiled a two-seat coupe concept called the RX-Vision at the Tokyo Motor Show to illustrate the dream. It uses a modified version of the 16X engine developed in the mid-2000s and shown in Mazda’s 2007 Taiki concept. If the rotary engine improves enough for the coupe to go to production, the car likely would use the underpinnings of the MX-5 Miata roadster. With its front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration, the MX-5 chassis is “close to perfection” for a sports car, Kogai said, though it would need to be stiffer to handle the more powerful rotary engine. Mazda has no timetable for introducing a sports car using the rotary engine, partly out of a reluctance to put pressure on its engineers to solve the problems of rotary engines. Historically, they have been less fuel efficient and less reliable than traditional gasoline engines, with higher emissions.

Datsun Go-Cross unveiled at Toyko The Datsun Go-Cross was revealed at the Toyko Motor Show recently. Though based on the Go series of vehicles, the pseudo-SUV has a refreshing look and may appeal to Indian tastes whenever it’s launched here. The Go-cross is much higher than the GO+, and features a bigger D-Cut grille, a higher bonnet line, a massive bonnet and taller body sides. It also gets plastic cladding around the body, roof rails, 5-spoke 17-inch al-

loy wheels, projector headlamps, DRLs… all of which make it look more rugged than it really is. The engine and other details have not been revealed as it’s a concept vehicle, but expect it to host the same 1.2 engine that powers the Go and Go+. With the country clamoring for SUVs and even the small Renault Kwid getting over 50,000 bookings, the Go-cross looks like it has all the ingredients of a market success.

NEWS GARAGE New Land Cruiser pegged at 1.3 Cr

Toyota India has launched Land Cruiser 200, priced at Rs. 1.29 crore, this new luxury SUV is now more contemporary looking and packs in a few additional features over the old. The new Land Cruiser looks different with a huge hexagonal grille, revised LED headlamps, new design for the alloys wheels and restyled rear combination lamps. It also includes a heated steering wheel, LED

illuminated entry system, tyre pressure monitors and enhanced multiterrain monitor cameras. The brute gets a huge 4.4-litre V8 diesel motor that churns out an elephantine 650 Nm of torque that’s transmitted to the wheels through a 6-speed automatic gearbox and a tried and tested all-wheel drive system for traversing any terrain.

Chinese onslaught makes tyres cheaper

The continuing massive jump in cheap imports of tyres, especially those of bus and truck radials, from China, which rose 138 per cent in the first quarter, may lead to a revenue decline for domestic tyre-manufacturers, says a report.

Out of the above, of the particular concern is the rise in imports in the T&B segment which accounts for around 60 per cent of domestic tyre industry’s revenue, India Ratings said in a report recently.

These are priced 25 per cent lower than the domestically produced ones, it said. The import volume of tyres in truck and bus (T&B) and two-wheeler segments rose 25.3 per cent and 120.5 per cent, respectively, in the first quarter of this year on an annul basis.

Chinese imports in the T&B segment rose 138 per cent y-o-y in the first quarter of this fiscal year to Rs 230 crore now accounting for around 80 per cent of the total segment imports.

DRIVEN MAGAZINE I NOVEMBER 2015

Rising imports could hit the replacement T&B

segment, which is a significant market for domestic companies. Currently, Chinese T&B radial tyres are not cost effective on per km usage basis in relation to domestic tyres and have minimal acceptability among large fleet operators and OEMs. Rising acceptability of cheap Chinese tyres come even though the domestic players score over Chinese on branding, warranty, after sales service and distribution network.

Mahindra eyes multi-brand car service Mahindra First Choice, a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra, is eyeing a big space in the car service industry after OEM maintenance, an official of the company said. "The after-market car service industry is presently having a size of Rs 20,000 crore. Out of this, half is taken away by the local garages," Mahindra First Choice CEO YVS Vijay Kumar told reporters. This industry would assume the size of Rs 33,000 crore by 2020, he said. The company, eyeing this opportunity, had opened 20 company-owned-

company-operated (COCO) workshops and 200 franchisees across the country, he said adding that another 300 such units would start working by the end of next fiscal. Kumar said that the company would complete back-end support to the franchisee workshops and they would be able to recover their investments in two to three years. The workshops would give service for all brands of cars besides Mahindra, he said.

Beetle update by year-end There have been rumors that Volkswagen India will be launching the new updated Beetle by the end of this year. The car which is a niche product of the company, never sold in large numbers, but is being prepped to exploit the renewed interest on smaller cars in the premium segment.

the overall external ‘traditional’ look of the car, which is its USP anyway.

Descerning car buyers have been on the lookout for a powerful car that is not only manoeuvrable in the city, but is also goodlooking.

Enthusiasts have been clamoring for pure hot hatches in the country and are expected to lap it up as there are very few really ‘hot’ wheels in the country.

Updates are expected in the engine department, changed interiors, with a few cosmetic changes externally. Not many changes are expected to

In line with the industry standards, the Beetle might may be getting a new engine, with a smaller but more powerful engine to take on the likes of the recently released Fiat Abarth Punto and others in the same price range.

he Range Rover is an iconic vehicle and one that’s highly regarded as combining true luxury with serious off road ability. The model we’re testing here is the best exponent of that thinking yet. Inside, it is wonderfully upmarket with a modern and stylish cabin that’s superbly finished with expensive-feeling materials. On the road it’s just as good with a supremely supple ride and excellent noise insulation, while there’s acres of space, particularly for passengers in the back. The downside is a hefty price tag and relatively high running costs. But for sheer class and desirability - few cars can match the Range Rover. In 2008 it was improved even further with the introduction of an excellent TDV8 diesel engine while the model was revised in 2009 with improved handling and a more advanced cabin.

Equipment:

makes a useful seat for changing out of muddy boots. The load area itself is wide and deep ideal for large amounts of luggage for long vacations. The rear seats split and fold down for longer items and the maximum carrying capacity is more than 2,000 litres. The boot is even bigger than on the previous model, and features numerous eyelets for keeping luggage firmly in place and the traditional split tailgate opening continues. Some wheel arch intrusion limits the ultimate practicality of the boot.

Running cost: As you’d expect of a large, luxury 4x4, the Range Rover is not a cheap car to run. It provides the refinement of a luxury saloon car and capable off-roader. The running costs could be seen as one cost for two cars. All the engines are thirsty - the TD6 and TDV8 both manage just

As you’d expect given the price tag, equipment levels are generous and all models get climate control, leather upholstery, cruise control, a touch screen control system, CD changer, sat nav, xenon lamps, rain sensors, electric seats, mirrors and windows. The diesels will command the best selling prices thanks to lower fuel bills. Buyers will be looking for a posh, luxury icon so any deterioration will not be welcomed or overlooked - it needs to be pristine. An up to date service history is

really important to provide buyers with peace of mind, and ensure that tyres still have plenty of life, as replacing them is not cheap. However ensure the interior and exterior are spotlessly clean to help emphasise the Range Rovers luxury credentials.

Buying used: Most Range Rovers’ off-roading will be restricted to gravel drives and farm house adventures, but still check for any off road damage particularly to the tyres. Diesels will be more in demand and the 3.0-litre diesel worth seeking out for its lower running costs. Early models are now very affordable, but be aware that the early TD6 diesel engine is very different from the more powerful and refined TDV8. The interior should wear well but it’s worth checking for signs of abuse. Full service history from a franchised dealer is invaluable given the increased level of sophistication of the car.

Reliability: This generation Range Rover is a big improvement in reliability over the previous model, although we still hear occasional reports of problems. But the basics have always proved fundamentally sound - such as transmissions, engines and bodywork. So, we would not expect that to be different with this model.

Verdict: The Range Rover Vogue is kitted so well, and performs so well over any terrain you can throw at it, that you can almost call it a fivestar car. There are some German and Japanese SUVs that do what the Rangey does, but none has the ‘car’isma that the Range Rover does and it does live up to its name. It’s not without its faults though, being the wrong side of two and a half tonnes, it’s quite a handful to drive and travels just 10 km on a liter of fuel, but the experience of driving the Range Rover Vogue is like none other. The Vogue is so overweight that it has a small SUV’s weight over each of its axles, but do not let that stop you from considering the Rangey. Sometimes you need to treat yourself to the best life has to offer.

he second-generation Mercedes Benz B-Class is the first in a line of two models based on an all-new platform. The German manufacturer claims that its Compact Sports Tourer or Compact Luxury Hatchback builds on the merits of being versatile and spacious. It’s surprisingly comfortable and better to drive. Featuring sharper styling and a massively updated interior, the B-Class might appeal to those looking for a classier hatchback. There’s a comprehensive range of options, and you can pick from petrol and diesel engines with automatic transmission only. So, is the B-Class with a price tag of Rs. 18-21 Lakhs really a sensible alternative to a Volvo V40 or a Mini Countryman, or is it simply filling a niche in the line-up? Mercedes Benz B-Class comes in 3 versions with 2 engine, 2 fuel options and one 7speed double clutch automatic gearbox. Buyers can pick petrol 1.6-litre B180 sports with 120bhp and diesel comes with 2 identical engines 2.2-litre 107BHp B180 CDI and B180 CDI Edition 1. The badge with B 180 nomenclature is just a misnomer. Both the engines are very smooth in Mercedes fashion, refined and economical. The petrol engines, particularly, are impressively flexible. All models are capable of gaining and picking up speed from the word go, but get a bit noisy towards the end. Cruising at speed on good roads is relatively comfortable, bumps can cause the B-Class to bounce and float, which can prove unsettling.

Equipment The B-Class is well equipped. All models get air-con, fully powered driver’s seat, electric windows, a leather-upholstery including trimmed steering wheel, steering wheel mounted audio and trip computer controls, 7 airbags, USB connection, radio/CD player, a COMAND interface with variety of media connectivity. The higher-specification bi-xenon lights with LED daytime running lights, a dual sunroof setup and a whole lot of safety tech. Buyers might be tempted by the options list.

DRIVEN MAGAZINE I NOVEMBER 2015

Practicality One of the B-Class strong points is its practicality, which makes it ideal for small families or those who travel with a lot of luggage. Front passengers get large door pockets that can hold bottles, two cup holders, a selection of small storage areas and a decently sized glove box. A USB connection is present in the centre armrest compartment. One 12-volt socket is standard in the front for charging. Boot space is a useful 486 litres. The supremely comfortable rear seats are adjustable, where even the tallest of people will have no complaints at the available leg room, while the front passenger seat backrest can be folded forwards, allowing for easy transportation of larger items.

Running cost The B-Class should prove relatively inexpensive to own. Service intervals are a sensible two years or every 15,000 km. Mercedes-Benz servicing can be expensive as luxury rides go, but economy, especially on the diesel models, is pretty good. Although there is a reasonable amount of equipment for the money you pay, the B-Class is priced significantly higher than other cars that do a similar job. Though the B-Class looks like a seven-seater cross between a soft-roader and a hatchback from the outside, it’s a fiveseater, limiting its appeal for larger families.

Reliability All Mercs are well built, and the B-Class is no exception. Mechanically, it feels durable and unlikely to throw up any major issues, with many of the components already being well proven. Each car is backed by a three year, unlimited mileage warranty as long as the car has been maintained by a Mercedes-Benzauthorised repairer.

Buying used The B-Class is a slightly odd proposition as a used purchase. It feels like a small people carrier, yet can only carry four adults in comfort. It could, however, make a sensible purchase for those looking for a small family car, or

hatchback, with a luxury image. Most B-Class cars in the used car market will be well looked after, so it shouldn’t be hard to find a good one. Don’t be put off by the petrol versions unless you’re doing over 15,000 kms a year, the difference in running costs could be negligible, but will be fun to drive, and dart around corners, and feels suitably sporty, with excellent body control.

Selling Most owners will probably find the B-Class relatively easy to sell, with its appeal being boosted by the Mercedes-Benz badge that is highly regarded. It’s somewhat of a niche model, anyone interested in a B-Class will probably be looking for models with the best economy, highest degree of comfort and the most options.

Most B-Class cars in the used car market will be well looked after, so it shouldn’t be hard to find a good one Verdict Questions arise with this car. One, is the diesel version better than the petrol, and two, now that the stylish and more affordable A-class is also available in the pre-owned market, should you be considering the B-class at all? The answer to both is yes. The B-class is a hugely spacious and very practical large hatchback, and to that end, the diesel engine is a much

better fit for it. It makes for a smoother, more relaxed drive, and there’s also the benefit of better fuel economy. A soft suspension makes it that much more comfortable while travelling. Although the B-class shares a platform, engines and a lot of trim with the A-class, the two cars have very different characters. The big B may lose some desirability points to its cheaper sibling, but on real-world practicality and usability, it absolutely trounces it. If price is your primary objective, the B-class is a better choice, but then nobody buys these beauties with price on their minds... after all, the image rub-off on your personality should count for something!

t commands the kind of premium other cars can only dream of. That’s saying something about the small favourite. There’s nothing small about the capabilities of an Alto, though. It has proven itself in the snowclad terrains of northern India, the deserts of Rajasthan and just about everywhere in between. Its small dimensions make it a dream to drive and park in the city, but it is also regularly driven on the highways, with no problems! I’ve recently driven a 2001 model myself from Jagdalpur, Chhatisgarh to Hyderabad in the most inhospitable terrain I’ve ever driven. Mind you, this is the old model we’re reviewing here. Driving where there are no roads is still okay, but nearly 200+ kms of roads that have been blasted by the Naxals, takes some ability to traverse. The road are so bad that the car was driven mostly in 1st and 2nd gears for 200kms, at a speed of 5-10kmph, to avoid craters damaging the underbody, and also to avoid slipping into the deep gorges on either side of the road. Oh, and the car was carrying 3 adults, 2 teens and 1 child during this journey. It was nothing short of a miracle that not only did this little Alto bring us home, it’s traversed that moon surface route many times later! Just goes on to show how well-built the little car is. The engine is just about enough to pull a full load and is completely maintenance free, spares are low priced, can be serviced anywhere, and to top it all, mileage is phenomenal, what else can anyone ever ask for? That said, space is a severe constraint, and three people in the rear seat better be on good terms as they are packed close to each other, but at that price and peace of mind, no one complains. The Alto is a perfect car for the city, where space outside the car is also at a premium. Its small dimensions and chuckability makes it immensely drivable. It is mildly comfortable for four people, but even then the back benchers are constricted. It’s the proverbial Jack of all trades - in addition to being miserly in fuel sipping and traversing moon craters, it’s extremely practical too - just flip the rear seat forward and you’ve got a huge loading area. We’ve seen people transporting airconditioners, coolers, chairs, small tables, bicycles etc. This model is the original Alto and has now been discontinued in favour of the Alto 800 and the Alto K10, but perish any thought of getting it on the cheap, as demand is sky-high even for some early 2001 models!

Practicality Rear space is tight and the boot is tiny but the split-folding rear seat increases luggage capacity considerably.

Running cost It’s very cheap to buy, very good fuel economy. You won’t get much back on it but then it

DRIVEN MAGAZINE I NOVEMBER 2015

It’s the proverbial Jack of all trades - from being miserly in fuel sipping to traversing moon craters didn’t cost much new either. Maruti parts are reasonable and shouldn’t be an issue for a few years. Since these little rascals are highly sought after you’ll be tempted to wait for better deals from the market.

Reliability Indian-built to a budget, so interiors are very flimsy, though basic mechanicals are reliable enough and the warranty is reassuring. The exhaustive service network is what tilts everything in its favour. Altos are known to take a lot of abuse all over the country.

Buying used If you can find one privately it will be cheaper than every other car, but it doesn’t lose much value over its original price. Dealer network and limited availability keeps prices higher than you’d expect. Check service history, body work, undercarriage etc, before committing to the sale, as there are a lot of abused Altos out there. Due to its low ground clearance, it is prone to underbody damage if driven badly.

Selling Altos serve their owners day in and day out without a whimper, so why would you want to sell them? Don’t sell quickly unless you’re part-exchanging it. That said, you’ll get a major portion of your investment back if you’ve decided to sell... and as already noted, you’d be tempted to wait for the next best deal as lots of first time car buyers buy this little wonder with their eyes closed... such is the fan-following for this car that offers cheap thrills.

Verdict It is cheap ‘n’ cheerful compact car. As you’d expect from one of India’s cheapest cars, it comes with few frills, but if economy is what you’re after, it will do the job offering 23kpl combined cycle. You’ll have to really want a new car to pick this over a second-hand buy. The Alto also has a robust built, as the sales number speak for themselves. The Alto is built to a budget - and feels like it.

he Mobilio was introduced more in response to Maruti’s Ertiga than the hallowed Toyota Innova. Until then people with large families on a budget, looking for a decent-looking seven-seater had very little choice. Ertiga was the only MPV within the budget constraints, but buyers were put off by its not-so-great looks. The Mobilio is the best-looking of the lot. Honda got so carried away with the good looks of the Mobilio, that it priced it above the Ertiga. Now we Indians are famous for wanting the world at the lowest cost….and this is the only speedbreaker that has hit sales.

Equipment The pre-owned Mobilio we’re testing here is the V-iDTECH which comes with a 1.5 litre 4-Cylinder diesel that churns out a healthy 99 bhp@3600 rpm. That itself is not the whole story... at 1214kgs, the Mobilio weighs the lowest among all the MPVs and this gives it an unfair advantage. It has the highest power-to-weight ratio among all MPVs, which includes the mighty Innova too! This makes it effortless to drive, whether on the city roads or on the highway. This model boasts of Driver and Passenger airbags, ABS with EBD, Fog lights, Engine immobiliser, Alloy wheels, Rear defogger, Rear wash/wipe, Power steering, Power windows, Steering-tilt adjust, Height adjustable driver’s seat, Electric ORVMs, MID, Remote locking, Reverse parking sensors, Central locking, A/C with rear vents, Sliding second row, 60-40 second row, 50-50 third row, Music player with Aux/USB and steering mounted controls.

Practicality The car is very easy to drive with the ride quality being very good, the soft suspension contributing a lot towards keeping the occupants comfortable. The Mobilio is especially good on all kinds of roads, as its ground clearance is a massive 189mm and clears all kinds of obstacles very easily. Since the vehicle is going to be used more for long

distances, it should be ‘travel friendly’… the MPV has a lot of cubbyholes for your travelling stash, with cup holders on all rows, even the last one. All the doors hold one litre water bottles, with more space behind the front seats for magazines and other items. The seats are well-padded and comfortable, and the leg room in the first two rows is more than comfortable, while space in the third row is at

a premium and is good for only children. Drop down the last row of seats and you have more than enough space to move house. Fold the tumble forward second row seats and you’ve got much more of space. For all the space it offers, the Mobilio is very car-like, which means it’s easy to drive in the city.

Running costs The Mobilio, as explained earlier, weighs the lowest among all people movers and this shows in the fuel consumption figures. It returns a combined 18kmpl and could even go up to a claimed 24kmpl if driven with a light foot. Service costs are on the higher side compared to the Marutis, but then Japanese quality is no-nonsense, so you do not need to service it that often. It does what a people mover is supposed to do - carry 7 people in comfort, at the lowest cost.

Reliability The Mobilio scores big with Indian families, which have mostly four adults and two children. Introduced in 2014, this ‘family car’ is relatively new in the market and there have been no problems reported. No major

DRIVEN MAGAZINE I NOVEMBER 2015

reliability problems are foreseen too, if the service schedules are adhered to at regular intervals.

Buying used The ‘family car’ makes a very good buy, if you’re in the market for a good-looking MPV that you can use every day, it make a very good alternative to the Ertiga, but the fact that it’s a new entry and not many are available in the market makes it’s prices a bit higher. The MPV is powerful, good looking, spacious and fuel efficient… what’s there not to like it?

Selling Very few Mobilio’s are available in the pre-

owned market due to their recent entry into the market and also due to low sales, which can be great for potential sellers. They can easily sell it at a premium due to the MPV’s rarity, and as we always say, proper service records and the general upkeep of the car inside and outside, will fetch you that much more.

and looks, feels and drives like a normal sedan. Herein lies its appeal.

Also Consider Maruti Ertiga, Chevrolet Enjoy, Nissan Evalia, Mahindra Xylo.

Verdict The Mobilio will be bought by families with occasional seven seat use, so it is a perfect automobile for them. It is not a full-time seven seater and cannot be used as such, but its mileage, power make it a good buy, though a little overpriced, but we see families opting for it as it doesn’t look like a traditional MPV

- 2.0 TDIDiesel / 174bhp @ 4200 rpm - CVT Automatic - 17 kmpl - Rs. 44 lakhs* - Rs. 16 - 25 lakhs - 50%

Buying Used There are plenty of good used 3 Series around the city, Efficient Dynamics with fuel saving program will be even more worth it. Don’t be afraid of cars with higher mileages, especially diesels, although a BMW dealer service history will be important.

Buying Used More than two thirds of all A4s on the used market are the 2.0-litre TDI, so diesel buyers should have no problem finding one. But you should also be careful, as they’re run more and will be nearing the end of their ‘No issues’ cycle.

Selling Any BMW 3 Series in good condition will sell but you’ll get a better price for a diesel model compared to similar powered petrol. Cars fitted with Efficient Dynamics will command a premium as not only are they more efficient but are also more powerful.

Selling Well-kept diesel models will sell quickest, especially those with key options fitted, such as leather, satellite navigation and automatic transmission. These and the more powerful models will help raise the value making your car more attractive.

Practicality The BMW 3 Series practicality arsenal has many weapons. The car has a smaller boot than the Audi A4 of 450 litres but it is also available with a luggage compartment package which includes a 20-litre sliding drawer beneath the parcel shelf.

Practicality The minimum boot volume in the A4 is 480 litres ahead of key rivals from BMW and Mercedes. The boot is user-friendly too with a flat and wide floor plus an optional luggage pack can be chosen.

Running costs The 3 Series’ running costs aren’t as bad as you might expect. BMW does have excellent residuals and good economy too – especially on cars with Efficient Dynamics. Yearly budget should look at Rs.50,000/thereafter. Additional Service Plan Available BSI (BMW Service Inclusive) Reliability BMW 3 Series reliability is well known all over the world and we expect the latest model to fare just as well.

Running costs Audi servicing tends to be expensive. Expect 10-20K for scheduled service, an yearly budget of Rs. 50,000/thereafter is a conservative estimate. Additional Service Plans available with Audi car life advance.

Pros Great to drive, decent level of standard kit, premium image, superbly built, refined interiors. Cons Expensive options, firm ride.

Reliability Audis tend to perform above average, and the Audi A4 reliability record should be no different. Audi dealers also perform well when responding to problems or complaints. Pros Roomy interior, superb ride and handling, large boot, top quality cabin, excellent choice of engines. Cons Hard to fault, but not active compared to BMW.

Verdict For performance and economy - is the excellent 320d EfficientDynamics which is great to drive and returns an amazing 18 kmpl. BMW prides itself on driving pleasure, and the 3 Series is no exception. The Audi is beautifully finished, build quality was never in question, while the BMW may still have the edge on ultimate driver appeal, the 2008 A4 is a better all-rounder. Our Choice: Audi A4

Mahindra XUV500 vs Tata Safari Strome

Mahindra XUV 500 The Mahindra XUV500 comes in the following 5 versions with 2 transmission and 1 fuel option. Variants - W6, W6 4X2, W8, W8 4X4, W8 AWD. Engine Power Transmission Mileage Combined Cycle Price when new Price pre-owned Depreciation

- 2.2 Diesel / 140bhp

- 6-speed Manual - 15kmpl - Rs. 11.20 - 17.99 lakhs* - Rs. 8.50 - 13.40 lakhs - 40%

Tata Safari Storme Tata Safari Storme comes in the following 5 versions with 1 engine, transmission and 1 fuel options Variants - EX, LX, VX 4x2 and VX 4x4. Engine Power Transmission Mileage Combined Cycle Price when new Price pre-owned Depreciation

- 2.2 Diesel / 138bhp @ 4000 rpm - 5-speed Manual - 12.7kmpl - Rs. 11.61 - 12.55 lakhs* - Rs. 9.25 - 12.55 lakhs - 40%

Buying Used It’s arguably the best looking homegrown SUV ever, you could buy it just for that, and is also comfortable among the big Japanese Sport-utes, however, there are niggles a-plenty, so check for detailed service history and then go for it.

Buying Used The Safari has been updated to the Storme in every department but it still looks the same, that said, it can take a lot of beating on the highways and takes bad roads with aplomb. Owners typically abuse them, so look out for signs of damages.

Selling You’ll find no problem whatsoever in selling your XUV500 as it’s one of the cheapest good-looking SUVs you can find in India. You’ll even get a major portion of the money you originally spent on it, if you have a service record.

Selling The Storme holds it’s price reasonably well and if it’s well-kept you’ll even get most of your money back, as there are a lot of die-hard Safari fans who laugh at the little crossovers and put their money on the Storme. Keep service records and you’ll get more.

Practicality A refined car in every sense of the word, and it doesn’t look and feel like a Mahindra product. Being a monocoque, it’s lighter than the Storme and its ride is impeccable, however, bad roads unsettle it. Luggage space is almost non-existent.

Practicality The Storme is an extremely comfortable car on the highway with amazing ride quality. It can tackle mild off road excursions and gives you the tough-boy feeling. Used as a 5-Seater, it can easily accommodate luggage for a long trip for 5 people.

Running costs The XUV is easy to live with as it is comparable to the Storme in all departments - it’s got 7 seats, mileage is good, spares are reasonably priced, but what really is a deal breaker is that Mahindra service is also as bad as Tata’s.

Running costs It’s not built too well, too many things go wrong frequently; Tata Service is not the best; Spares are reasonably priced and most importantly, since there are better options in the market, you might get a preowned Storme at a reasonable price.

Reliability The XUV is a well-built car and feels the same while driving, however, there are reports of brake pads wearing fast, funny noises from the brakes, electrical options going kaput etc. The engine, of course, is very reliable and can run all day.

Reliability Like the XUV, even the Storme suffers from niggles all through the car at regular intervals and needs care every now and then, however, it’s an extremely consistent performer and can go hopping from city to city without complaint.

Pros Spacious, comfortable, good handling, well-equipped - ABS, EBD, ESP, Hill hold Control, Brake Assist, Engine Immobilizer, Airbags all round. Cons Third row for kids only, no luggage space, Mahindra ASS not the best.

Pros Cheapest old-school SUV, LSD, electronic shift for low range, ride quality, seven seats, off road capability. Cons Side facing last row seats, body roll, fit & finish, Tata service.

Verdict The XUV is as good or as bad as the Storme, but there’s no denying that it’s good looks set it apart, that said, there are a lot of Storme fans that will sneer at the XUV, but if you compare it feature by feature, we’d go for the XUV. Our Choice: Mahindra XUV 500

aving a passion for cars and enjoying them isn’t limited to those who can afford the most expensive rides in the market. It’s about how you enjoy what you have at your disposal. All cars pretty much do the same thing - just fill them up, floor them, and you can get to your destination. But the amount of money you can spend on these rides, varies from bargain basement to small fortunes. Why is it that a lucky few can afford or are willing to pay much more for cars, when cars costing a fraction of that price can do virtually every practical task demanded of them just as well? Don’t we all know the answer? A car is something to be seen in, we use it not only as an expression of our own personalities, but in the case of the priciest vehicles, its the evidence and show of wealth and status. Humans aren’t equipped with peacock-like tails or tusks, antlers or any of the other appendages used in the animal kingdom to denote a dominant specimen... but this car comes really close to serving that purpose. If you’re trying to look like someone of note, then an expensive car is a good place to start. Research reveals that when a product offered to someone is very expensive and that person is told that its expensive, his brain actually prepares his body for the experience of pleasure. The question which comes to mind is, which is the most comfortable, most luxurious car in the world? You will be seated in a wonderful plush, tan leathered room with stunning handcrafted backrests, panels and handles, while your feet are cosseted by the fur of what seems like a Kashmiri goat’s. Such is the 10 star experience of being in a Bentley Azure T. The Azure is a first cousin only to the god of silence, and manners, and breeding. This doesn’t look or feel old fashioned at all. Everything, from the beautiful Magnolia painted body to the sheer quality of the high gloss wood paired with the hand-stitched leather panels, make it look fresh as tomorrow morning’s paper. Maybe its back-end is a bit wonky, but other than that the styling, roof up or down, is just the most inspired piece of automotive design, as it still retains all the trademarks and signature elements of its elders with a tech feel to it. Luxury and power are an intoxicating mix; one which the Azure has so naturally perfected and still easy enough for you to dribble. Next came the Azure T. All the elegance, fluid lines and hand craftsmanship of the Azure, but with a new potency that made it more desirable than ever. HISTORY

Winning the race slow and steady

Founded by Chung Ju Yung, born into a poor family of farmers, the Hyundai Motor Company became the first Korean car producer. The grounds for founding a car company could not have been more welcoming since post-war years in Korea brought forth a series of odd policies, one of which stated that automobile imports were better than having a Korean car brand.

Yung was quick to fill the void, having raised enough capital for the investment from his very profitable construction business, opened in 1947. One year after its birth, the Hyundai Motor Company signed a technology-share agreement with Ford in 1968. Soon after Hyundai’s access to Ford’s resources, the first Hyundai car was developed: the Cortina. This model was quickly followed by the release of the Pony, Hyundai’s first entirely Korean designed and built model. Its blueprints however, were not all-Korean, the company having used Japanese technology from Mitsubishi to develop the car. Japanese constructors at the time had already developed wide range of models, many of which were exported worldwide, mainly to the US and South America. The Pony model was the first Hyundai to be shipped overseas in 1975.

DRIVEN MAGAZINE I NOVEMBER 2015

However, Hyundai would only cross US borders later, in 1986, with the release of the Excel. The subcompact car was an instant hit with its fairly small price tag accounting for most of its popularity. The Excel was such a hit that it sold in over 10,000 units in the first seven months.

This was the last automobile that Hyundai produced before resorting to their own technology in 1988. The Sonata was their first born, a mid-seize car that marked the beginning of a new era. Despite the steps the company had taken into building a strong brand image, the reputation Hyundai had previously collected was lost because of poor quality and reliability complaints. As soon as the 90’s came, Hyundai was short of air on American territory, struggling for one last gasp. Instead of retreating, the company made massive investments in new design and technology. By the time the new millennium came, the company had already been reinstated as one quality car manufacturer. Sales increased once more and with them so did the buyer’s confidence in Hyundai. The sudden shift in consumer behavior was made possible by eliminating all worries regarding the vehicle’s reliability through the introduction of a 10 year warranty to US sold vehicles only.

Since few companies could top that, Hyundai quickly earned a spot in the world’s top -10 car manufacturers. Hyundai is currently operating in 193 countries, selling vehicles through approximately 5,000 showrooms and dealerships. Sales have also aided image growth, the brand having entered the first 100 most valuable brands of the world. Its recent history is strongly connected to investments in technology and ample advertising campaigns. Indeed, communication is one of Hyundai’s inherent elements, best described by their logo: the stylized H is in fact a representation of two men (brand-buyer) shaking hands. Hyundai Motor India Limited entered the Indian market in 1996, and was completely unknown as a brand, and the only ‘advantage’ they had was that most manufacturers, barring Maruti, has outdated product offerings. Of course, fighting Maruti’s near monopoly over the car market was nothing short of scaling Mount Everest, but Hyundai unveiled a marketing masterstroke by roping in reigning Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan to sell their first offering then, the Santro… and the rest, as theysay, is history. It went on to become

How to make your car look younger!

There’s no denying it – wearing brighter clothes, applying a lot of make-up, styling your hair a certain way, wearing better shoes, doing up your nails ... all contribute to one thing, they make us look younger! All of us, especially the older ones, are guilty of this.

Why, we use the same principle to our homes too, don’t we, at festive times, a change of curtains, bedspreads, a little decoration or even a vinyl flooring or carpets do transform our homes. The same can be applied to our cars as well, but we do not give it enough thought at all. Spare a little time and money, and you can

2

transform your car, whether an old jalopy, a newly bought pre-owned car, or even your ten-year-old you want to sell… and you need not spend a fortune too. We scoured the car accessories market for rather inexpensive ‘add-ons’ that can brighten any car. Of course, do keep in mind that the exterior, or paint surface of the car has to be in good nick, without that, there’s no point if its interiors look like the Jodhpur Palace.

Before adding anything, make sure that the car is spotlessly clean, as constant use leaves a lot of dust, grime, food items between the seats, flooring, junk in the boot, oil stains everywhere, numerous scratches on the body etc. If you can do it yourself, good work, otherwise take your car to a car detailing service like 3M, and you’ll be amazed at how detailed their work is. It’ll come out spotless inside-out. Only after this should you start the makeover process for your car.

1

Be warned though, that if you’re making these changes in order to sell your car, that after the ‘makeover’, you’ll not want to sell your car anymore, as it’ll be a much better place to be in.

Here are some simple makeover steps that your local car accessories dealer can make in an hour or two.

Seat Covers

The first change that’ll give you instant results is a change of seat covers, it’s amazing and immensely satisfying to see the interiors of a car spruced up instantly. Do not stick to traditional white, grey or beige colours, since the objective of this makeover is to make your car look younger, experiment with bright colours. We’ve tried black and Red seat covers with a matching steering wheel cover in a white car, and the results were quite stunning! Do not worry what the accessories guy will say, ask him to just place the covers on top of your existing covers for you to get an idea and if you like what you see, then go for it. Cost: `. 1,800- 6,000

Wheel Covers:

Changing the exterior look of your car ‘instantly’ is also easy. While getting yourself a set of Alloy wheels is the ultimate legs you can give your car, since we’re on a budget, just add a set of plastic wheel covers. There are hundreds of designs to choose from. These wheel covers just snap onto your existing wheels and change the exterior look instantly. Do make sure your wheels themselves are clean and damage free, there’s no point in adding wheel covers onto dirty-looking wheels. Cost: `. 500-2500

3

Decals/Graphics:

Not many of us Indians are open to experiment with adding decals, or artistic stickers onto our car’s exteriors, but that’s slowly changing, with even manufacturers changing designs to make it a ‘new’ car. Youngsters would generally go for things like fire graphics from the wheels onto the doors, some sportier ones would add a couple of thick stripes from the bonnet to the boot. If you’re not convinced, start with something small on the doors, or the back of the car, and as you get familiar with it, you can add more graphics later on. Do keep in mind that when it comes to graphics, less is always more. Cost: `. 500 (small) to 5,000

DRIVEN MAGAZINE I NOVEMBER 2015

4

Gearshift Knob/Cover:

5

The gearshift is one thing that drivers use the most, but rarely even look at it, come to think of it, when have you actually ‘looked’ at your gearshift stick? There are a choice of gearshift knobs and covers to suit every taste. Simple leather ones, with stitches visible on the outside are our favorites, and come in single or dual colour combinations. It would be wonderful if you could match it with your seat covers, but not necessary. There are a lot of gearshift knobs available, like skull heads, spider-man head and even some erotic ones! These gear knobs are sure to become conversation points whenever someone sits in the passenger seat. Cost: `. 200-1,800

LED reading lamp/Cabin light:

With all the changes you’ve made, you’d now like to show off the changes to all and sundry – even during the night, but the standard issue cabin light leaves a lot to be desired. Replace the standard bulb with an LED one and you’ll see the interiors in new light… a bright white light at that! You could even read in this bright light, and it’ll illuminate every part of the car. An added advantage is …. Better selfies, if you please! Cost: `. 150-600

Floor mats:

6

The standard flooring that comes with the car is usually made of felt-like material, which is a dust magnet to say the least. Even the mats that come free with the car are not the best, as dirt and mud accumulates on them and makes the car look dirty. You’ve got a few options to remedy this situation. You could get the whole floor lined with plastic flooring which not only looks good but is also easy to clean, or you could get the latest honeycomb floor mats, which are very good at disguising dust and grime until you’re ready to clean it thoroughly with water later. An additional advantage is that you get a nice soft and springy floor! The cheapest option would be to get a set of better quality floor mats that can change the look of the interiors. Cost: `. 500-3,000 Another thing we need not expressly note is a good perfume, or the AC outlet clip on ones that’ll keep the cabin smelling fresh. While the above changes are more than enough to spruce up your old car on a strict budget, there are other gadgets you can add to make the cabin more contemporary. Like a reversing guide, reversing camera, SatNav, a good music system, or even a small refrigerator, but we’ll go into the details of these gadgets in another story.
