These are exciting times for motorists, as new vehicles are being introduced every other month and this can only mean good news for us pre-owned car lovers, as people move on to newer cars and we get a wider selection of used cars to choose from. Going home with your dream pre-owned car is like fishing, you need to bid your time and be prepared to wait for a long time. Your patience will undoubtedly be rewarded with an exquisite choice of vehicles to choose from. It is this prospect we’re getting excited about. We’ve featured the latest car releases, as well as the Frankfurt Auto Show, for you to have an eyeful of concepts, which will slowly trickle down as new cars in the years to come. Most manufacturers – right from Porsche to SsangYong - have showcased their pure electric and hybrid car technologies that will make up the future, but for now, we, the pre-owned car lovers can be content with our petrols and diesels to give us a high! Tested this month are the Mercedes R – Class, the Volvo S60, the Ssangyong Rexton RX7 and the Maruti Suzuki Swift ZXi. The R-Class, specially makes a lot of sense as a pre-owned buy as it sheds a lot of value and carries seven in ultimate luxury. We also compare the Volkswagen Polo with the Honda Jazz, and the BMW 5-Series with the Mercedes E-Class. We’ve also decided to embrace the Classic Car bandwagon, after all, even these super expensive classic cars are used cars in the strict sense of the term. This month we check out the Mercedes 450 SLC… which will surely turn heads like no other car you’ve ever been in. Also in this issue is the contentious issue of accident cars in the pre-owned market. All used car dealers, whether private or authorized, indulge in palming off accident cars at some point of time or the other. We in India would not willingly even touch these cars with a bargepole, but would happily drive one if we do not know about its past history. Are these accident cars really that bad, or is it all in the mind? We dig deeper into this murky world of accident cars and how we could end up with one despite our being ultra-careful. And like I always say, you can share your family memories with us - have an old car in the family with a story or memory attached to it? Do share it with us, or tell us about your first car and the adventures you had in it... anything connected with cars. If you need answers to recurring problems with your cars, advice on things mechanical, want us to cover a particular story, send bouquets or brickbats, please write to me on editor@driven.co.in.

New Kwid on the block
T
he Renault Kwid has been launched in India in 6 variants and is priced between Rs. 2.57 - 3.53 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The car has generated a lot of interest after a sneak peek a few months ago and is bound to become a major player in the entry level car market. The Kwid has been priced with an eye on the slice of the pie occupied by the Maruti Alto, the Hyundai Eon and the Datsun Go. It will probably also eat into the sales of most entry-level hatchbacks, as it will create a new
Y
category of sorts – a micro SUV! The newest Renault comes with a three cylinder 800cc engine belting out 53bhp. While this is good enough, what’s impressive is that since the car weighs just 660 kgs, the power to weight ratio works out to 85bhp per tonne! The low weight also contributes to a fuel economy of 25.27 kmpl. The good things do not end there – ground clearance is a SUV-ish 180mm and boot space is rated at 300 litres, which is impressive for a small car. The top-end RXT variant also gets a
7” touchscreen infotainment and navigation system with USB, Aux-in and Bluetooth. With specs like this, the little car will shake up not only the entry level small car segment, but also hatchback segment.

Speaking at the occasion Mr. Naomi Ishii, Managing Director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. ltd said, “We are proud to announce the launch of our third driving school in India at Hyderabad. Being the fifth largest city in India, the burgeoning population and rising vehicle density has aggravated the road safety challenges in the city. With the launch of Toyota Driving School in the city we intend to make the journey
towards safe India as smooth a ride as possible. The driving school will work towards inculcating safety habits among aspiring drivers and make every student a safety ambassador as well a responsible driver. Improving traffic safety requires a comprehensive approach that studies every facet of the situation and finds remedies that reach to every segment of society. Toyota is pursuing such an approach in its dedication for safer vehicles, safer drivers, and safer traffic environments” Indian roads have the reputation of being one of the deadliest in the world by claiming one life every four minutes in road accidents. With Hyderabad now ranked as third highest in terms of vehicle population with 723 vehicles per km, recent study conducted by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) declared that Hyderabad recorded the highest number of road accident deaths in the country in 2014. Toyota’s Driving School aims to reverse this trend by ‘unleashing’ better drivers on the city’s roads.

FERRARI CALIFORNIA
The world’s leading Sports carmaker Ferrari did not have a great first stint in India due to bad dealership and service problems, but it’s put the mishap behind it and has come back into India with the launch of its latest sports car, the California T. This model is expected to catch the eye of a lot of people with deep pockets, as it’s the cheapest Ferrari on offer in India at around Rs. 3.50 Crores.
FERRARI PRICING Ferrari California T: Rs 3.45 crore Ferrari 488 GTB: Rs 3.99 crore Ferrari 458 Spider: Rs 4.22 crore Ferrari 458 Speciale: Rs 4.40 crore Ferrari F12 Berlinetta: Rs 4.87 crore Ex-showroom Mumbai
DRIVEN MAGAZINE l OCTOBER 2015
T
he California T’s heart is a twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 unit, which churns out 553bhp and a twister-like 755Nm torque, which ported to the wheels through a seven speed dual clutch gearbox. These figures take the T from 0-100 kmph in just 3.6 seconds, besides the maximum speed of 316 kmph. Besides the twin turbos, the aluminum build of the car aid in the insane speeds it can reach. These speeds do need some serious braking power to bring it to a halt, and the California’s Carbon fiber brakes take care of it. Besides the power on tap, the most important thing is the engine and exhaust notes all through the rev range, thanks to the twin turbo chargers that contribute to this wonderful sounding car that will make the strongest of Ferrari aficionados go weak in the
knees. Though Ferrari is back, cars are made on order due to the colour, customisations and other requirements of customers, and deliveries can be made in 3-4 months and can go up to over 6 months depending on the customization of the car. The California looks every bit the Ferrari it is, with low, road-hugging body, large flared wheel arches, bright colours, and a design that’s like none other. Besides the launch of the California, Ferrari also launched four other models – the 488GTB, the 458 Spider, the 458 Speciale and the F12 Berlinetta - priced in the range of Rs 3.99-4.87 crore. These prices are not a constraint at all for the Ferrari lover, as it is rumored that Ferrari India’s stock has been sold out for the year 2015 and that dealers are now accepting bookings for the year 2016.

According to Volvo, almost 24,000 XC90s have been pre-ordered. That number’s impressive considering it constitutes about half of the anticipated full year’s sales volume. Of the many revolutionary things about the 2016 Volvo XC90, one of the most important is that it introduces the company’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). It also incorporates new safety features, namely a system that protects the occupants if the crossover runs off the road.

D PEOPLE CARRIER
13
IMPRESSION
T
his is Mercedes-Benz’s take on a people carrier. It seats six, comes in short and long wheelbase forms, and has a suitably upmarket feel. It’s also the first premium people carrier with a sporty look and 4x4 as standard - which gives it a unique place in the new car market and means there are few alternatives. It excels at long distance motorway cruising but around town it can be a bit of a handful for its sheer size. It’s also far from handsome with an unusual profile. However, if you want something sleeker than the usual people carriers and not as bulky as a traditional 4x4, the R-Class could be the answer. In 2011 it was revised and a new 280 CDI two-wheel drive model was introduced while the six-seat configuration was dropped in place of a choice of either five or seven seats. (In reviews, we noted that the R-Class was
certainly roomy and boasted excellent interior materials. But while the rear doors provided a huge opening to ease getting in and out, they were very long and could result in plenty of dings in the mall parking lots. On the road, the R-Class was a bit like driving your own personal high-speed train: big, heavy and with an eerie way of making high speeds seem completely reasonable. Handling wasn’t an especially strong point, as the R-Class didn’t inspire much more confidence than a typical large luxury crossover. Neither engine produced especially impressive acceleration.)
Equipment: Every R-Class has Mercedes-Benz’s 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission, permanent fourwheel drive, traction control, brake assist,
“It’s the jack of all trades but master of none. Surely it’s excellent, but not a car that appears to make great sense” electronic stability programme, dual front, side and curtain airbags, cruise control, climate control, CD stereo, automatic headlamps and wipers, partial electric front seat adjustment and 17-inch alloy wheels. SE adds metallic paint, fully adjustable electric seats, burr walnut trim and full leather upholstery. All models gained AMG body styling as standard along with front fog lights and parking sensorswhile alloy wheels have been upgraded from 17-inch to 18-inch on the diesel models.
DRIVEN MAGAZINE l OCTOBER 2015
Practicality: If the two rear seats aren’t in use, then you’ll find R-Class’ main party trick appealing. The two back seats fold into the floor, revealing enough room for the luggage of the four passengers. Fold down all four rear seats and the load area is practical enough for the weekend jobs that every family has. In the cabin there’s a large glove box and centre console cubbies as well as some large cup holders in the rear. Models from October 2011 can accommodate five adults and their luggage with 869 litres of boot space in the standard wheelbase models and more than 1,000 litres in long wheelbase models.
Running cost: The big engines come with big fuel bills don’t expect any much more than 6 Kmpl. Which sounds fare enough for a car of this size. Mercedes-Benz dealer servicing is notoriously expensive and parts aren’t cheap either.
“It excels at long distance motorway cruising but around town it can be a bit of a handful for its sheer size” Selling:
Buying used:
Although this is a ‘niche’ vehicle, the MercedesBenz badge and flexible interior should ensure that there’s a strong demand. The diesels are by far the most sought after.
Don’t be swayed by a seller talking-up some of the expensive options he may have had fitted. Look for cars with COMAND DVD sat-nav and rear seat entertainment, but even then, don’t be tempted to pay over the odds for them.
Options like heated seats, extra armrests may be expensive new, but they add little value.
Reliability: Although there have been some concerns over quality in recent years, Mercedes still seems to be on track with the R-Class. The interior is impressively trimmed and it uses well-proven engines and technology (such as 4MATIC four-wheel-drive), however the Mercedes Benz has discontinued this car and it is out of production. So be aware of the jeopardy.
Verdict: It’s the jack of all trades but master of none. Surely it’s excellent, but not a car that appears to make great sense, but it grows on you the more you drive it and live with it especially over longer distances with big families. However it certainly has its limitations around town.

IMPRESSION
T
he Volvo S60 is one good-looking car, specially the blood red one we’re reviewing for this story. One look is all it takes to make your heart beat faster, but we don’t see that many of its siblings roaming about in the urban jungle, do we? Trouble is, in India, Volvo is known more for its buses and trucks than cars, but the luxury marquee is slowly making its mark in major cities of the country. The S60, or indeed Volvo is still not up there with the Germans in terms of desirability, but has oodles of style and character... even the build quality is excellent. This mid-size luxury sports sedan is here to stay.
Equipment The S60 comes with two 5-Cylinder diesel engines, the 2 litre turbo generating 163 bhp at 3500 rpm and the 2.4 litre turbo diesel generating 215 bhp at 4000 rpm. Wheels are 17-inch alloys, while seats split 60-40 and there’s 380 litres of space in the boot and is just about enough for a long trip, but is less than what its competitors are offering. Ergonomically, the back-lit switches fall easily to hand and are easy to use. The leather seats are top of the line and offer excellent comfort. Six speed auto transmission is standard in all
DRIVEN MAGAZINE l OCTOBER 2015
variants. The car is brought to a stop by disc brakes all round. Safety features are what set the S60 apart. It comes with Side Impact Protection System, Dual stage airbags, Side curtain airbags, Whiplash Protection system, Collapsible Steering column, Pedestrian Protection System, Energy absorbing bonnet etc. Other features are Remote Central Locking, Auto door locking, Immobiliser, Remote alarm, Retractable Power mirrors with ground lighting, laminated side windows, Lockable wheel bolts, Cruise Control, Sunroof, parking sensors etc.
Practicality The Volvo S60 is a very comfortable car with suspension and seating well sorted out. The seats are finished in leather and feel extremely comfortable, while the suspension takes care of our legendary bad roads with ease, cocooning the passengers not only from the road undulation, but also insulates them from outside noises, keeping the cabin quiet and calm.... all resulting in an overall better experience. Seating, though rated for 5 passengers, is comfortable only for 4, as the 5th one would be seated a little higher than
the others.
Running costs In India, the S60 is available only in diesel but offers two options - the 2.0 litre 163 bhp which stretches a litre of diesel to a combined 14km, while the 2.4 litre 215 bhp stretches a litre of diesel to 10km. Not bad at all for a car with sporting intentions. Be wary of the high cost of service and spares.
Reliability The Volvo S60 owners do not complain of many problems, as the car, as are all Volvos, built to last a lifetime. So last they will for years and years. A little care and regular service will take care of these. Volvo cars do not have a great brand recall in India, but are reputed for reliability and strong build quality the world over, and India should not be any different. The S60 is a luxury car which is not associated with luxury, it’s also a sports car that not associated with sports cars either, so it’s a balance of both with the safety features of a family car. It’s got everything you’d ever want.
Buying used The S60, along with other models are quite common on the used car market and drop more than 60% of their new price. With a long list of safety features and looks that thrill, the Volvo makes immense sense as a used buy. The best affordable luxury marquee, if you please.
With an overdose of luxury, sporty intentions and oodles of safety, you’re sure to have the best of all worlds.
Selling Volvos last forever, so it makes immense sense to hold on to your S60 and enjoy the timeless design that’ll keep you safe until the next generation, but if you’ve made up your mind to sell, then keep in mind that you will lose a lot of money. Do keep service history on hand for negotiations. It makes immense sense to exchange it at Volvo Assured for a newer version of the S60 or even trade up.
Verdict The S60 is a different kind of car. It doesn’t fit into a set mould. Neither does it conform to the standards set by its rivals. Its engines, though efficient, are slightly low on power compared to others in its class, but is a very efficient highway cruiser and will keep you in ultimate comfort. Unfortunately, we Indians with our herd mentality, flock to cars that our friends and neighbours buy... and this is the car for people who do not want to follow the path, but blaze their own.

he Ssangyong Rexton is not a looker in any sense of the word, but it resembles the Mercedes GL-Class from some angles, and why not? It is based on some Mercedes designs and even its engine is from Mercedes. This full sized SUV has already made a mark and is Ssangyong’s best selling model all over the world, with good reason - it has immense road presence because of its size and boasts some serious muscle.
Equipment The RX7 comes with a 2.7 Litre 5-Cylinder diesel engine belting out 184bhp, which is routed through a Mercedes sourced automatic tiptronic AWD transmission to the four 16 inch tubeless radials on mag wheels. This
DRIVEN MAGAZINE l OCTOBER 2015
Rexton is the top-end fully-loaded version and boasts of soft leather electrically adjustable seats, air bags, speed sensitive power steering, automatic rain sensing wipers, steering mounted controls, automatic air-conditioner, automatic headlights, Stability Control, Hill Descent Control, Cruise Control, ABS, heated outside rear view mirrors, SATNAV, touch screen infotainment system, keyless entry, sunroof etc. There’s space aplenty and seven seats, though the last row is only for children. The RX7 has a 252mm of ground clearance which takes care of off road excursions as well as rough roads, with the ride quality remaining excellent. There are a plethora of cubby holes for your travelling stash, while is boot is just about adequate.
Practicality The Ssangyong feels extremely comfortable, with the plush seats, the soft suspension and the super powerful air-conditioner, all contributing to making it that way. There are AC vents on all rows aiding in greater flexibility. There’s no hiding the huge dimensions, and despite the ABS and other electronic gadgets, there’s a lot of body roll. There is a lot of insulation and this keeps the cabin calm even at high speeds. The auto gearing leaves you a little dissatisfied, as it does not shift when you want it to, so overtaking at high speeds needs a little planning. There are 2 cup holders ahead of the gearshift and little storage spaces everywhere, drop down the last row of seats
and you have acres of space. Fold the second row and you can almost fit a small car in there! The engine puts out power from low down with hardly any turbo lag, and this helps you drive the huge bulk easily in the tight confines of the city.
Running costs A huge, heavy traditional body on frame SUV and good mileage figures do not go hand in hand, but it still returns around a combined 8 km to a litre of diesel, which is excellent considering its size. However, do not expect saloon-like maintenance figures, as driving a full-size SUV has its own set of problems. Mahindra service is touch and go, so not many marks there, however, since the RX7 is older Mercedes technology, it’s pretty reliable on all counts. Very little of the car is being made in India, so cost of spares is expectedly high, but their availability with Mahindra is a big plus.
Reliability The chassis, engine, gearbox and all technology is from Mercedes, so quality and reliability is very high and is on par with its competition. Older Mercedes’ have been known to last a lifetime, and it shouldn’t be any different with the RX7 too.
Buying used The RX7 has a powerful engine, is loaded with technology, and is extremely comfortable, so expect it to have been used extensively on intercity runs and high mileages, but since
these are very hard to come by, prices will be artificially kept on the higher side. One factor on your side is that since the Ssangyong badge is not associated with luxury and not many people will be looking for it in the first place, you can beat the price down. The SUV makes immense sense as a used buy as you get Mercedes technology at ‘paisa vasool’ prices.
Selling Ssangyong owners are generally in two minds, whether to let go of the RX or not. They are caught between their love for the luxuries it provides at a lower price point, and the badge that does not belong to the upper echelons of luxury. The RX7 loses nearly 40% of its new price depending on its condition, so you do not lose much. Keep service records on hand and keep the vehicle in top condition and you can expect the maximum.
Verdict The Ssangyong Rexton RX7 is the best valuefor-money full size AWD SUV you can buy. Feature for feature, it’s got more than its competition. The reputed Mercedes engines are very powerful, refined and a joy to use, while the high ground clearance makes it very comfortable and also makes it a good off road vehicle. It’s got everything a full size SUV should have at a prices we can afford. If you can afford the pre-owned prices, just buy it.

“It may lack the badge kudos of the VW or Fiat, but the Swift is a superb small car that is every bit the equal of more expensive hatchbacks”
I
mproving refinement can be a minefield. Too much and you’ll dull a car down so much, it loses character. Too little and the masses will never flock to your showroom. With that in mind Suzuki appears to have pulled a masterstroke with the ‘new’ Suzuki Swift in 2005. It’s Suzuki’s best seller and India’s favourite hatchback the Maruti Suzuki Swift. It may lack the badge kudos of the VW or Fiat, but the Swift is a superb small car that is every bit the equal of more expensive hatchbacks. It’s stylish and sporty looks mean it stands out from the crowd of usual suspects and with plenty of interior space along with a neat, well built cabin. The Swift is very competent, entertaining and cost-effective which makes it a compelling choice in a crowded segment, with generous equipment levels and a diesel option adding to the attractive package - in short it’s one of the best small cars on sale since 2005.
Equipment: This 9-year-old high-end ZXI model comes well equipped with Power steering, electric
DRIVEN MAGAZINE l OCTOBER 2015
windows, remote central locking, trip computer, airbags, 15 inch Alloy wheels, ABS, climate control, front fog lamps, driver’s seatheight adjustment, emergency brake force distribution, three-point seatbelts all round.
Practicality: The interior is filled with a decent amount of useful storage, including a deep centre console cubby, large glove box and long door bins. With 204 litres of boot space the Swift is just about adequate for 2 - although alternatives like the Hyundai i20 boast more. The luggage area is easy to access and unload, while the rear seats split 60/40 and fold flat for added room. Visibility is great too, with what seems like a wall of glass wrapped around the car, making parking a piece of cake.
Running costs: Being a hot hatch, the Swift offers low running costs no matter which model you go for. The car is excellent value for money when new and even better as a used car. All engines are economical and insurance is cheap, while
servicing at Suzuki dealers is very affordable. Depreciation is better than other small cars too.
Selling: A thriving market for small hot hatches means that you should have no problems with the Swift when it comes to selling - as long as it’s sensibly priced. The Swift also has in its favour modern looks, an attractive interior, reasonable running costs and good build quality for the Indian roads. Among younger buyers, and the Swift is seen as a smart choice. A well maintained and cared for example should prove easy to sell for a good price.
Buying used: The Swift sells in large numbers as other small hatches, so finding a used one will not be a challenge. Suzuki dealers are a good place to start. The Swift is used in the city for a major portion of its life, check for shopping dents and scrapes, wheel alignment and kiddie damage. The car is likely to have lived a slightly more exercised existence, so check for crash damage, tyre wear and clutch life.
Reliability: As with all Suzukis, the Swift is proving to be very reliable. Only a few small, niggling, faults have been reported. Suzuki has a reputation for mechanical durability, the Suzuki feels well-built initially, but owners tell us that the cabin get noisy and sound deadening needs a mention. But the Swift can be bought and run cheaply enough to make it an immensely shrewd purchase from start to finish.
Verdict: The Swift hits the spot. It’s well-built, cheeky, safe, inexpensive and above all, fun to drive. Many small cars can offer two or three of those attributes, but to get the full house is a rarity. Should you buy one? We’re fans of the Swift and the latest engine makes a lot of sense for those seeking a decent value, well-built, good to drive and spacious small car. If you’re looking for a hot-hatch that’s a little different from the usual boring names, give the Swift a try.

Buying Used The Polo is a good looking car with a solid German build quality and some great and torquey engines. You will have no issues with its day to day running, and gives you a safe feeling compared to the Japanese builds. Makes a very good used buy.
Buying Used The new Honda Jazz has been released, so the older model will get cheaper and makes immense sense as a used buy. The car is very reliable and the power is more than enough in the city.
Selling Owners are generally a very satisfied lot and do not usually sell, and if they do, it’s generally for a bigger V-Dub. If maintained well, it’ll get a major part of the original price back without any issues.
Selling People selling the Jazz will not get a value offer, since it was priced very high, which ticked off potential buyers. Not many of these are on the roads, so people might buy it for exclusivity. Service records are a definite plus.
Practicality The Polo is an extremely good looking car in its segment with understated looks. It’s very practical to drive about in the city because of its excellently paired engines and good ride quality. Boot space is just about adequate.
Practicality The Jazz is quite a large car but doesn’t look like it at all. Its interiors and comfort are on par with bigger cars, and innovative seating releases more space. It’s got cubbyholes and cup holders everywhere. Mileage is on par with its Japanese brothers.
Running costs With mileages of 15-18 plus from Petrol and Diesel engines, it stretches every litre to even more if driven within its limits. Service costs are a little higher than industry standards, but then you have a car that’s different from the others.
Running costs You’ll have no complaints with fuel economy, nor the great engine which is very refined and very competent. Ride quality is a bit harsh and not in line with its competition. Service costs, though, will be a little high since this car has been discontinued.
Reliability German cars have a reputation to protect, and this little VW is no different, with not many problems reported by owners, if taken care of at the Authorised Service Stations. Beware of slightly higher service costs.
Reliability The Honda is a very capable machine and goes about doing its work without much fuss, with very little downtime. However, as with most Japanese cars, it needs to be taken care of regularly.
Pros Small size great for city, airbags in all variants, great engines, good performance, equipment, fuel economy. Cons Interior space at a premium, boot space on the lower side, service costs high.
Pros Good build quality, lots of space inside, flexible seating maximises space, good boot space, fuel economy. Cons Harsh ride quality, has to be pushed to make if perform, discontinued, so spares will be hard to get.
Verdict In the eternal fight between the Germans and the Japanese, the Easterners usually win, but between the Polo and the Jazz, it’s tilted towards the Polo as it depreciates much less than the Honda Jazz… and to top it, the old Jazz is not in production anymore. Reliability wise, both are on a similar footing. Our Choice: Volkswagen Polo

- Automatic - 10 kmpl - Rs. 48 – 1.39 Cr* Ex Showroom - Rs. 8 – 15 lakhs - 60%
Buying Used Most cars should have the right equipment, but if you’re not fussy expect to find bargain four-cylinder petrol and diesel models, particularly those with automatic gearbox - however bear in mind the services costs, plus will be harder to sell afterwards.
Buying Used 5-series models are still quite pricey so bargain hunters should look for manual petrol models - the 520i or 523i for the best value. Diesels and automatics will be in highest demand and there is a healthy premium for M Sport models due to their sportier styling.
Selling Well maintained cars in the right specification should sell easily. The diesels will always be popular and as a result it may take longer to sell a petrol, especially the higher powered model.
Selling If you’ve chosen automatic, leather and sat nav, these will make the car look most attractive to a potential buyer. Diesels are also sought after but you should have few problems selling any 5-Series, especially if it’s been well cared for and has a BMW service history.
Practicality The E-Class saloon has a decent sized boot with 510-litres - that’s more than the Jaguar XF but it loses out compared to the Audi A6. The wide opening means it’s easy to load, There’s also decent storage up front with door bins and a large central cubby.
Practicality The 5-Series offers approximately 520-litres of boot space, which although useful, is slightly smaller than the Merc E-Class and Audi A6. It’s important to note that folding seats don’t come as standard so you’ll have to pay extra if you want to carry larger items.
Running costs The Mercedes E-Class isn’t cheap, but holds its value well. Depending on the right specification, the diesels are exceptionally frugal, it’s important to be aware that Mercedes dealers are upmarket, their rates on servicing a car are the highest in the industry.
Running costs The 5-Series has class-leading resistance to depreciation, but servicing isn’t cheap. When buying new, customers can choose a fixed-price servicing pack to cover the car for 5 years/90,000 Km. Diesels are the most efficent in fuel cosumption.
Reliability Some early models from 2002 suffered from some electrical glitches, but Mercedes has eliminated most of the problems for the 2006 revisions. It’s certainly mechanically robust and interior quality has improved in the last few years.
Reliability The 5-Series has been quite reliable so far, so wellmaintained car shouldn’t be hiding any nasty surprises for future owners.
Pros Elegant styling, superbly comfortable ride, luxurious cabin, refined. Cons High running costs, Poor gearboxes, slightly soft in corners.
Pros Aspirational image, great to drive, exceptional fuel economy on diesels, modern cabin. Cons Styling still not to everyone’s taste, firm ride.
Verdict BMW has a strong reputation for building cars that are rewarding to drive and the latest 5-Series lives up to that status. The sports saloon comes with a wide choice of engines with strong performance while the sharp steering and excellent body control give it class leading handling. The trade off is a firm ride, which can make the 5-Series unsettled on uneven roads. Spacious, comfortable and superbly built, the BMW remains the best valued executive saloon on the market. hen it comes to real-world affordable cars, none is better engineered than a seventies and eighties Mercedes Benz. The SLClass derives from the German word SportlichLeicht which means Sport Lightweight and it has been attached to the mightiest Mercedes sports cars since 1954 when the legendary 300SL was shown to the world for the first time. The 300SL, specifically the great ‘Gullwing’ coupe, re-established Mercedes’ sports car credentials after World War 2 by winning the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1954, and began the company’s triumphant march through to domination of world motor racing in the 1950s. Since the 300SL there have been a series of high performance SL sports cars, and most

Among them is the archetypal Astral Silver 450SLC, a coupe version of the 1970s R107s Mercedes-Benz which is both granite-sided and chamfered, a classically styled Benz roadster that came to embody the filthy rich and all the things that makes you special possessing one. The 450SLC was a coupe version of the SL roadster. It was essentially the same except for the wheelbase, which was extended by 360 mm to accommodate the two rear seats, and the fixed steel roof with the slightly higher roofline that gave those in rear seat quite reasonable headroom. The engine delivers a smooth and powerful
fuel-injected 4.5-litre single overhead camshaft V8, 3-speed automatic which boasted peak power of 225 bhp and top torque of 35 Kgm. Like all Mercedes-Benz models, the 450SLC came with everything you would want in 1970s. Air-con came standard, as did power steering, power windows, leather trim, lit-up vanity mirrors, original AM/FM radio cassette, outside temperature gauge, cruise control, superb walnut veneer, alloys, headrests, rear seats and yes, there was a sunroof. But enough of this history lesson; what matters most is that this most romantic of time capsules, occupies a special place in Mercedes Benz’s past, and we somehow found ourselves with the privilege of enjoying it, little by little, under the highly contrasting realms of the modern world. In the midst of it all, the 450 SL is every bit as alluring as you’d expect of a classic Mercedes. Stares aren’t just probable, they’re inevitable. We often speak of the most memorable cars possessing the greatest senses of occasion,
and the SL is up there with the best of them. 450SL’s illustrious make: it’s a classic and it is distinctively, unmistakably, and unquestionably a Mercedes. In this day and age, apart from its reputation for resilience and class, value appreciation stands as one of the Mercedes Benz SL’s most attractive aspects: an immaculate unit in the US will fetch over $70,000. Speculators have already suggested that those figures will only be going one way, up. Bidding farewell to it was almost akin to saying good buy to a person you’d just met, but felt like you’d known them forever, and that aptly describes the sort of emotion it evokes. In high regards, Zain Bilgrami – the owner – also happens to possess quite a number of collectibles. Which we will soon be unravelling. The 450SLC is the one he refers to as a “favourite girl”. FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW 2015
The Frankfurt Motor show is traditionally a time for German carmakers to flex their muscles. So it was an unfortunate turn of events when BMW’s new chief executive Harald Krüger collapsed from exhaustion as he delivered his keynote speech. Even more troubling are the VW Group’s issues with alleged emission dodging, a scandal that threatens the lustre of the country’s entire industry. The show was a more toned down affair than usual, but the heavy-hitters of the motoring world still managed to present some suprises, and some spectacular cars. Pictured here is the Jaguar F-Pace, completing the largest ever loop-the-loop by a road car. It was undeniably exhilarating watching stunt driver Terry Grant race the car inside the 19.08m tall, 360-degree circle.

The Italian firm claims it can lap the Nurburgring’s fearsome Nordschleife circuit in just 7:39 - a new record for a saloon car if true. 1627 bhp Bugatti Bugatti Concept Vision Gran Turismo revealed in Frankfurt giving the clearest hint yet of how the new Bugatti Chiron hypercar will be. The power target Bugatti’s engineers have in mind for the finished product is an incredible 1,627bhp and 1,500Nm of torque from a hybrid adaptation of the Veyron’s 8.0-litre W16 engine. That means some scarcely believeable figures are claimed: 0-62mph in two seconds flat and ‘more than’ 270mph, although whether or not these are overly ambitious for the production model remains to be seen.
Cirtoen C4 Cactus The Cactus M Concept is a convertible beach buggy with a waterproof interior, inflatable roof and tough plastic panels. The designers took a standard Cactus straight from the production line in order to create this fun drop-top. Built between 1968 and 1986, the Mehari was a utilitarian car based largely on the 2CV. With its narrow wheels, raised suspension and tough plastic bodywork, the Mehari became a staple of French rural and beach life. Now, 30 years on, Citroen is holding up the car as one of its icons – in the same vein as the 2CV and DS – and is trying to revive its ethos with the Cactus M.
Topless wonder Ferrari wowed the crowds with the roofless version of its storming 488 GTB at Frankfurt. With a 660 bhp 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8, the new 488 Spider is good for 0-62 mph in 3.0 seconds, and will hit 203mph despite the folding hardtop. The manufacturer has also fitted an electric glass rear wind stop, which can be adjusted to three positions. Even when the roof is in place, the glass section can be lowered so that the driver can be exposed to the full V8 soundtrack.
Fiat refreshes its 500 Fiat claims to have lavished as many as 1800 detail changes throughout the car to keep it fighting fit against its younger city car rivals. It’s also undergone an interior overhaul, various equipment upgrades too. It’s got a 0.9-litre pertol two-cylinder TwinAir turbo with 85bhp or 103bhp, along with the 69bhp 1.2-litre four-cylinder. Fiat will shortly release an ‘eco’ version of the 1.2-litre petrol also. The 94bhp 1.3 Multijet diesel (now Euro6compliant) is scheduled to join the range shortly after launch.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE, GLOBAL CARS
T
ata Motors, as it is known today, started life in 1935 as Tata Engineering and Locomotive Co. Ltd. (TELCO ), and was into manufacturing locomotives and other engineering products. The company later diversified into making Trucks and other commercial vehicles, with its first commercial manufactured in collaboration with Germany’s Daimler-Benz. Tata then went on to capture the commercial vehicle segment with a 70 per cent share, with Heavy vehicles, Light Commercial Vehicles like the Tata 407, which was a runaway success. In 1991 the company entered the passenger car segment with the Tata Sierra, a MultiPurpose Vehicle which caught the imagination of the people. The sierra was way ahead of its time and sold in decent numbers. Next to be released was the Tata Estate in the year 1992, which again was ahead of its time, when all the cars were three box sedans. Both the cars sold in good numbers, but Tata was criticised for making truck-like cars. Little did they know that the very same DNA would change the automotive scene for ever.
the sales charts, Mr. Tata agreed to sell it and made a proposal to Ford, who showed interest. When Mr. Ratan Tata, along with his team of experts went to the company’s headquarters in Detroit and met Mr. Bill Ford, the Chairman of Ford, he is reported to have spoken insultingly towards the Tata team. Bill Ford is reported to have said that if Tata didn’t know anything about the passenger car business, he shouldn’t have entered the business in the first place. He is
The Tata Sumo was introduced in the year 1994, which quickly became the darling of the nation. Both private and travel agencies around the country bought them in large numbers for its versatility and space. It was used routinely by the Travels guys to carry over 12 people over long distances. Not content with the success of the Sumo, Tata Motors soon introduced India’s first SUV, the Tata Safari in the year 1998 and soon became the highest selling SUV in India. Mr. Ratan Tata, who spearheaded the growth curve, wanted the company to take on the passenger car segment, and in the same year, introduced India’s first fully indigenous passenger car, the Tata Indica. Though the car had strong mechanicals and decent fuel economy, its build quality was criticized by all the so-called ‘experts’, so much that sales started taking a hit. It looked like the Indica was a failure from the start. People around Mr. Ratan Tata advised him to get rid of the complete passenger car division. Looking at

a l s o reported to have said that they would be doing Mr. Ratan Tata a favour if they bought the business from them. This rejection gave enough ammunition to Tata to get back to the market
and attack it with renewed gusto. The next year itself, Indica became a nationwide success despite the experts criticising it. The car climbed the top selling charts due to its solid build quality and fuel
economy, in addition to it being priced lower than other similar cars in the Indian market. The Indica was later improved and derivatives like the Indica V2 and Indica Vista took over from this highly success model and went from strength to strength. Just a decade later, during which Tata consolidated its position, Ford was on its way to bankruptcy, losing heavily on their JaguarLand Rover portfolio, and in a stunning reversal of roles and
fortunes, it was the Tata Group that offered to buy the ailing British marquees Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford. The Chairman Mr. Bill Ford finalised the 2.3 Billion Dollar deal. In the meeting, Bill is reported to have told Ratan that Tata was doing them a favour by buying J-LR from Ford. Tata, in a span of just 5 years, has not only turned the loss making Jaguar Land Rover combine into a profit making enterprise, but has also succeeded in reviving the iconic British brand, this when BMW and Ford, in turn could not do it. Though Mr. Ratan Tata was in the driver’s seat as far as success in the passenger car business is concerned, he always had a soft corner for t h e
common man, and he announced that it was his dream to manufacture a car for just Rs.1 lakh. This when the cheapest car was almost double that amount. In the year 2008, Tata unveiled the world’s smallest
car, the Tata Nano, using ingenious technology to cut costs and still make a modern looking vehicle for the masses. It also exceeds Indian government safety and pollution regulations and is reputed to have exhaust emissions lower than most two-wheelers being manufactured in India today! The world hailed Tata’s engineering skills and lauded its efforts, but Indians were not sold on the idea of a cheap car and sales took a beating, but Tata kept innovating, re-inventing and re-equipping the little Nano with more power, auto transmission and a boot hatch, which made people change their perception. Not wasting time and drawing a lot of knowledge from Jaguar - Land rover, Tata designed a vehicle to grab a slice of the pie occupied by Toyota’s Innova. What followed was the Tata Aria, an extremely capable machine that was more than a match for the market leader. It was a combination of an SUV, an MPV and a Sedan - they packed it with all the features anyone would ever want. It came with a 2.2 CRDI engine, seven seats, climate control, cruise control, disc brakes all round, six air bags, xenon headlamps, power folding ORVMs, GPS navigation, steering wheel mounted controls, dual zone automatic climate control, light sensing head lamps, rain sensing wipers, reversing sensors, touch screen information system, high end audio system, six air bags, ABS, EBD, TCS and a large boot. The car failed to make a mark mainly due to it being overpriced. It was arguably the first Tata that was not value for money. Lately though, Tata passenger cars have taken quite a beating in the market, with competitors bringing in modern and up-todate cars and catching the fancy of the car driving public who have a choice of the very best on offer. Never to sit back, Tata went back to the drawing board and came up with two new and modern cars - The Tata Zest and the Bolt, which are as good and better in some areas that the offerings of competitors in the market. The duo sported a segment first Multi-drive mode which could switch between economy and sport modes by the press of a button. These two cars have put Tata right back into the marketplace. Tata’s product portfolio spans trucks, buses and light commercial vehicles, and is the 4th largest commercial vehicle maker in the world.

Most cars lose their value by as much as 50% due to depreciation in the first 2-3 years

halo, you’ve finally decided to buy a car, but what should you buy? A new premium hatchback or a one-year-old luxury marquee? This question has been a thorn in the flesh of car buyers since long, but we at Driven are passionate about getting the maximum with the limited money in hand and it makes excellent sense to buy an awesome preowned performance car these days. We not only get it a much cheaper than the original price of the car, but will also save on new car additions like road tax, registration, a little on insurance, additional features/gadgets the owner might have added etc... all these cost quite a bit when added up. care of too, but the major factor in buying a pre-owned car is, we can afford to own our dream cars, or a luxury marquee beyond our reach, that too at almost the cost of a new sedan you can actually afford! Talk about a multiplier effect! These exclusive new rides lose their value by as much as 50% due to depreciation in the first 2-3 years and make excellent value for our limited budgets. Another reason we get them for that less is that the people who bought them new would have lost interest i n them, as they are no more exclusive a n d
trade up to newer more exclusive models! Yet another reason is that most of these cars are bought on Company names, and are sold every few years, or even every year, to save on taxes. We know companies in India who often buy the same models as the cars being sold! Only newer... and a majority of them are Innovas, as they hold their value quite well when sold within one or two years, and they have an updated model every time - smart isn’t it? The main advantage for the buyer is that, though these exclusive rides depreciate nearly half their value in 2-3 years, they hold their value quite well after 4-5 years and do not depreciate much further, making them prime candidates to be sold away after

we use them for a few years! By then ‘newer’ pre-owned models enter the market. If we play our cards well, we can keep this cycle going on and keep driving better cars for a long, long time... without being crorepatis. A couple of decades ago, buying a pre-owned car was riddled with uncertainties, as proper maintenance was unheard of, but these days we can get proper service histories at the touch of a button... and in any case, these marquees have to necessarily be serviced at authorised centres to keep extended warranties intact. If you’re a first-time car buyer, look for cars that are not more than 3-4 years old, because they will be not many kilometers on the clock, and you get advantage of the maximum
depreciation. So if you decide to sell it 2 years later, you’ll get back almost all the money you’ve paid for it. Steer clear of rides more than 5 years old, not that they will not be reliable, but because as cars age, there are more things that can go wrong, and they’re not exactly cheap to fix, are they? There is a reason why leading pre-owned car companies and dealers do not entertain cars older that a maximum of 8 years, as that’s about the time ripe for major components to go kaput. Think gearbox, clutch, engine... the works. But then, the more adventurous among us may beat the price down further and get ourselves rock-bottom deals on luxury rides! The risk of a major failure is always there, but this too can be
minimised with a simple trip to a reputed used car dealer, whether independent or companybacked, and get a thorough inspection done. They will charge you for it, but the 150-180 point inspection checklist leaves nothing to chance and will tell you in detail of what you might need to change and when. With this Inspection Report in our hands, we now have complete knowledge of the health of the car and any potential issues that may crop up. The money spent for the inspection will be your best bet, as you can narrow down on the healthiest car, hit the road and really enjoy the ride, soaking all the attention of friends and foes, and start living your dream... until you decide on your next metallic beauty, that is. There’s really no end to this!

CAN WE BUY ACCIDENT CARS?
C
hecking if a car was involved in an accident is like trying to find out your girl’s ‘boyfriend history’. The facts are so well hidden, and you are smitten by what you see, that you just cannot find out or ignore the tell-tale signs, until one fine day it dawns on you… by that time it’s usually too late to do anything worthwhile. So is it safe to buy accident vehicles? There’s no easy answer to this question, but before we go into the nitty-gritty of whether to buy cars involved in accidents or not, consider this… In India over 56 road accidents happen every hour snuffing the lives of 16 people. In the year 2014, India registered 4.89 lakh road accidents which killed 1.40 lakh and injured 4.93 lakh people. Of these, cars, jeeps and taxis are involved in 1,11,218 accidents, resulting in the deaths of 26,038 people and leaving 1,13,413 injured. That’s a huge number, which is only climbing higher due to increased usage of four-wheeled transport. What do you suppose happens to all the vehicles involved in accidents? We Indians love to hoard... we do not throw anything. Don’t believe me? Look around your house - you’ll find a hundred things that you haven’t used in a long time, but hadn’t had the heart to throw out! So do you seriously think that all those ‘accident cars’ are just junked? Good Lord… no, there are various ways of ‘getting rid’ of the unwanted crumpled and
DRIVEN MAGAZINE l OCTOBER 2015
twisted metal on wheels. More often than not, if the car in question is fully insured, and is damaged beyond repair, the insurer generally does not pay the full amount and offers the owner an amount much lower than the ‘full insurance’ cover and also offers him the accident car. Most owners accept this arrangement, as they can later sell the car as scrap. Scrap dealers who are in every city, buy these accident cars on the cheap, salvage the good parts and put them up for sale. These scrap dealers are where owners of ageing budget cars or discontinued cars, go to for their spares. A couple of decades ago, when I owned an old Premier 118 NE, I had a problem of a leaking brake. Turned out that the grease nipple was faulty and spares were not to be found, but a trip to the ‘specialist’ scrap dealer solved the problem. Even today, you can find everything – from speedometers and complete dashboards, to bumpers and full engines of various vehicles in these ‘specialist’ scrap yards. While this is heartening, not every accident car ends up this way. Many of these ‘scrap car’ buyers employ an army of workers – denters, painters, auto electricians, upholsterers and mechanics, to bring the cars back to life. They make more money putting these repaired vehicles back on the road. We’ve seen cars in workshops in Chhattisgarh working on a Maruti Wagon R with the whole
of its left side missing. The chassis was being beaten into shape to re-weld onto the body. After a coat of primer and a good paint job, no one would be any wiser. Accident is one thing, but one whole side dented and re-welded onto the body is a disaster waiting to happen… and this is not an isolated case. And if you think new cars in showrooms are in mint condition, then think again. New cars are transported across the country by road and mishaps do happen while loading and unloading. What do you think happens to these unregistered cars? When on a data gathering drive, we visited a private garage for pre-owned cars, where in one corner, was an Alto, sans seats or trim being given a coating of primer. What drew us to it was the yellow T/R number ‘plate’ still stuck to it. When goaded, the painter said that showrooms give them these cars sometimes to take out dents and make them look new again! This was one extreme case, and had we not seen it ourselves, we wouldn’t have believed it. Whatever the case, you are not escaping from the ‘accident car’ even when buying new! Not all cars end up this way, of course, some are repaired at Authorised Service Centres, using genuine spare parts. These genuinely ‘refurbished’ cars are infinitely better than the re-built cars at privately garages, as they are rebuilt by people who know these cars inside out and use new parts, so longevity of the
repaired cars is guaranteed. Some well re-built vehicles drive so well, that it’s difficult to believe they are ‘accident’ vehicles, most re-built vehicles are repaired quite well, since the aim is to dupe the buyer, but an expert or a trusted mechanic can easily spot the tell-tale signs of damage. What we’re getting at is, that if you’re in the market for a pre-owned car, there is a very high chance of you buying an accident car…while this in itself is not a problem, do not be duped into paying more for them. You could get them for almost half the prevailing used car prices! Stay with reputed free standing used car dealers or manufacturer attached pre-owned car outlets and you’d fare okay, though even this is no guarantee of a completely fair deal. At least if you are not informed of the accident status, you could take them to court, since everything’s on paper and they stand a lot to lose from negative publicity. An acquaintance of ours recently bought a car from a company operated pre-owned outlet, where a 2011 diesel car was offered for just 3 lakhs. He was told that the car was involved in a small accident – that is was reversed into a wall. What we found out later was that it was involved in a front three-quarters accident. The happy ending was that the car drove impeccably, and buyer owned a popular car at almost half of a similar pre-owned nonaccident model!
Since there are no laws protecting you from being duped, it pays to be on the guard. Always, we repeat, always get cars checked by your trusted mechanic. They can spot an accident car instantly, can weigh the pros and cons and tell you present & potential problems and also whether you can safely put your money on it. Always check the service history with the Authorised Service Station, which can reveal some secrets, if not already revealed to you. In the end do not be swayed by what people say. Everyone will dissuade you from approaching a car involved in an accident, but the savings are potentially huge, and if the repairing process is done carefully, it’s worth the risk. You can haggle the price according to the severity of the accident – rear-ended cars, small frontal damaged ones, dents and scratches on the side etc., are okay, and their structural rigidity is intact, but steer clear from ones with serious damage to the underside or the roof of the car. That said, popular cars are more likely to be repaired and sold off than low selling, unpopular ones, so use your new-found knowledge and get maximum value for your not so perfect pre-owned rides, put in a little more money and you’ll have a good vehicle for much less. To sum up, there are worse cars than the ones involved in accidents. Surprised? Consider
cars that have been submerged in floods – water enters every inch of the car and spoils everything… the body, electronics, upholstery, meters - everything. Rusted cars are another cause of worry, as these corrosive spots are like tips of icebergs… there is always more inside that we cannot see. All these should be avoided like the plague. How can you spot these? Well, that’ll be dealt with in future issues. So keep reading Driven.

HOW DOES A CLUTCH WORK
A
ll of us, without exception, are guilty of this – ignoring the clutch in our car. We are happy when the car drives well, and we’re not exactly bothered about the working of the clutch. It’s a case of ‘out of sight, out of mind’, but seriously, the clutch is one of the more important ‘links’ in the working of your car. It’s the clutch that takes engine torque to the gearbox which distributes it to the wheels.
A worn or a ‘slipping’ clutch can reduce the amount of power that’s transmitted to the wheels, resulting in wastage of fuel. The working of a clutch is a complicated process but we’ll try and explain it in the simplest of terms. In its simplest form, the clutch allows engine power to be applied gradually when a vehicle is starting out and interrupts power to avoid gear crunching when shifting. Engaging the clutch allows power to transfer from the engine to the transmission and drive wheels. Disengaging the clutch stops the power transfer and allows the engine to continue turning without force to the drive wheels. To understand how a clutch works, we first need to understand who the players are and how the whole shebang works. So let’s look at the basic components: the flywheel, clutch disk, pressure plate, throwout bearing and linkage. A large steel or aluminum “disc,” the flywheel is bolted to the crankshaft of the engine. The flywheel does many things - acts as balancer for the engine, dampens engine vibrations caused by the firing of each cylinder, and provides a smooth-machined “friction” surface that the clutch can contact. But its main function is to transfer engine torque from the engine to the transmission. The flywheel also has teeth along the circumference, allowing the starter motor to contact when turning the engine over.
Replacing your car’s clutch can be costly. Use these tips to make it last longer and save money on repairs. 1. Don’t ride the clutch
The first rule of long clutch life: avoid keeping your foot on the clutch. Otherwise, you’re creating extra wear on a very expensive car part.
2. Don’t use the clutch to keep from rolling backwards on an incline Use the handbrake until you engage the clutch, shift into 1st gear and reach about 3,000 RPM.
DRIVEN MAGAZINE l OCTOBER 2015
Slowly release the clutch and then the handbrake as you bear down on the throttle.
3. Don’t keep driving full-tilt when you see a red light
By slowing down in advance you can avoid the clutch slippage. Drop the clutch on your idling engine. 4. Don’t drive away from a stop light harshly
Keep those RPMs low as you pull away from a stopped position. About 1,100 RPM should do the trick.
5. Don’t use the clutch to save your brakes
Your clutch costs more to replace than brake pads do. Match your engine’s speed to the front-wheel speed for smoother downshifting.
The clutch disc is basically a steel plate, covered with a frictional material that goes between the flywheel and the pressure plate. In the center of the disc is the hub, which is designed to fit over the spines of the input shaft of the transmission. When the clutch is engaged, the disc is “squeezed” between the flywheel and
surface for the clutch disc, a thrust ring or fingers for the release bearing, and release levers. The release levers lighten the holding force of the springs when the clutch is disengaged. The springs used in most pressure plates are of a diaphragm-type, however a few use multiple coil springs. The “throw-out bearing” is the heart of clutch operation. When the clutch pedal is depressed, the throw-out bearing moves toward the flywheel, pushing in the pressure plate’s release fingers and moving the pressure plate fingers or levers against pressure plate spring force.
pressure plate, and power from the engine is transmitted by the disc’s hub to the input shaft of the transmission. The pressure plate is a spring-loaded “clamp,” which is bolted to the flywheel. It includes a sheet metal cover, heavy release springs, a metal pressure ring that provides a friction
This action moves the pressure plate away from the clutch disc, thus interrupting power flow. Mounted on an iron casting called a hub, the throw-out bearing slides on a hollow shaft at the front of the transmission housing. The clutch fork and connecting linkage convert the movement of the clutch pedal to the back and forth movement of the clutch throw-out bearing. To disengage the clutch, the release bearing is moved toward the flywheel by the clutch fork. As the bearing contacts the pressure plate’s release fingers, it begins to rotate with the pressure plate assembly. The release bearing continues to move forward and pressure on the release levers or fingers causes the force of the pressure plate’s spring to move away from the clutch disc. To engage the clutch, the clutch pedal is released and the release bearing moves away from the pressure plate. This action allows the pressure plate’s springs to force against the clutch disc, engaging the clutch to the flywheel. Once the clutch is fully engaged, the release bearing is normally stationary and does not rotate with the pressure plate.

Few cars can thrill and make us go weak in the knees, especially if the car is not available in India… and to make things worse, import bills go through the roof. In this scenario what can an enthusiast do? By and large, we enthusiasts love driving, remapping our cars, and get that extra bit of power from our engines… all because we cannot afford the real ones. The easiest way to make a mark without spending a bomb is to get your ‘normal’ car modified to look like you dream ride. Though the whole exercise is not exactly an inexpensive one, the result is sure to leave the enthusiast in you thrilled to bits. It’s not as easy as it sounds, because when giving your ‘normal’ car away for modification, you trust the modifier to do a good job. in our hands at all. We’ve seen fabricated and modified cars look like a Bentley, a Ferrari or a Merc, but something was amiss in each of them. They were either the wrong size, the finishing not up to the mark, or the engine sounding positively whimpy.Making a mark in this difficult market, is Mr. Sangat Singh of Fine Auto Works, Delhi, who is the only authorised dealer in Asia of Viezu, England to remap ECUs all cars with OBD without opening ECU, and has been in the market for over 35 years, and he’s done some serious modifications that have been noticed by people. His latest creation is a replica of the Dodge Charger, yes, the same one flaunted by Vin Diesel in the Fast and

Furious movie franchise. Mr. Singh used a stock Ford Mondeo and changed not only the look, but also boosted power. He used bits of the original Charger to make it look authentic. The result is an impressive looking vehicle we’d love to be seen in. The car may not have the grunt of the original Dodge, but in the world of make-believe we live in, where appearance matter, it’s got the look and that’s what matters. The image rub-off the iconic ‘Dodge’ gives the driver is immense and cannot be measured in the money you pay for the ‘conversion’. Drive around the city and the replica Charger will grab a thousand eyeballs without fail, but no one would know the difference. That’s exactly what you would have wanted when you gave the Mondeo for a change of clothes anyway.
