Editorial Greetings, During these difficult times I have decided to dwell only on positive things, this month. The sun is in the sky, birds are singing and bulbs are springing up & flowering all over the place (even in places I don’t recall planting them!). Vaccinations are happening at an incredible pace and, hopefully, it won’t be long before we see friends & family. I personally can’t wait to be able to have a meal out with friends; hugs & laughter are what we all need. I’ll even settle for getting together with a glass of wine in someone’s garden. Bliss! Before we reach that goal I am finding new ways of interacting with them remotely. There’s the old favourite - the Zoom quiz. I participate in two a week. One is with the family, which in recent weeks has included having to wear fancy dress, in a style nominated by that week’s quiz setter. Disney week proved challenging! I haven’t seen any of the recent films (No, not even Lion King!) & creating a Princess outfit during lockdown is not easy. Thank heavens I already had a tiara! The second is with a group of friends, we’ve all known each other since Sheldon days. This one is rather more international, with one participant living in Ronda, Southern Spain. If you thought our lockdown was tough, you should try Spain, especially if you’re self-employed and, although your Spanish is good, it’s not quite up to translating

the minutiae of Government bureaucracy! This one’s turned more into a gossip, gripe & grape session, but with teachers, nurses & the furloughed amongst us, it’s understandable. Sometimes you just need to get things off your chest! I have also discovered the delights of online tastings. Something I would heartily recommend if you’re bored with every evening being the same. It works incredible well. Wine or foods are delivered to your home, so it’s nice and safe if you’re shielding or nervous, and the host is on a live feed, allowing interaction. Dan’s Deli, in Wootton Bassett, host regular Cheese & Charcuterie on-line tastings. This afternoon I will be attending a three year old’s Zoom birthday party, which could prove interesting! Her mother has lovingly sent homemade cupcakes, cookies & jelly to all the invitees, to add to the spirit. Doubtless I will spend a period of time talking her Great Grandmother through the intricacies of Zoom, again. She normally joins the quizzes without managing to turn her camera on & if she does that today how will we know she’s not cheating whilst we’re playing statues? Wish me luck! Local news and events From the Registers The interment of the ashes of Arthur (Ted) Uphill aged 101 took place in Rodbourne churchyard on 8 February. Ted lived in Corston for many years before moving to a bungalow in Hullavington, and finally he resided at Marvern House Care Home, Melksham

Malmesbury and District University of the Third Age We are still in lock down but surely the end is in sight! Many of us will have had our vaccines and are looking forward to being able to meet friends and family. We all need all the support and companionship we can get. Look no further than Malmesbury u3a. If you are retired or semi retired and enjoy meeting people while learning something new then we have around 40 different interest groups to tempt you. Even though at the moment we cannot meet in person some groups meet online. What we do have for all 400 members to enjoy are the following talks on Zoom. Note the dates in your diary. �February 11. Graffiti Through the Ages by Michael Lewis: This talk will enable us to look at graffiti from the Modern back to Medieval including examples of medieval graffiti that can be found in Malmesbury and the surrounding area. �February 25. Poetry, Feminism and Creativity. Guide Dogs

Guide Dogs UK / Blind Children Over the years Guide Dogs UK has become more and more involved in helping adults and children with sight conditions, including those unable or unwilling to have a dog. In many cases Guide Dogs UK are able to provide various other options including “My Guide” which will pair up a fully trained volunteer with a blind person. A partnership is built up whereby the “buddy” will accompany the person in need on trips to the doctors, shops etc. and becomes a valuable friend in the process. This is currently helping over 1,800 people get out and about affording them a more enjoyable life. Not all fully trained animals are suited to being guide dogs and may be given a career change so that they are still able to support someone in need. For instance “buddy dogs” are paired up with children with vision impairment (and/or mental health conditions) and make a vast difference to those children's lives giving them confidence and more purpose. The photo this month (not mine for once) highlights one such partnership and you can plainly see the happiness and trust in both the child and the dog. There is also a similar scheme for adults, namely “companion dogs” which became even more important during lock down situations. These dogs are not guide dogs but the companionship they give to someone with any condition makes a world of difference to the confidence and well being of that person. There are currently some thirty five thousand children and young people in the UK living with a sight impairment and Guide Dogs UK have been involved with schools for many years helping blind children under a Healthy Eye Programme. Since 1990 Guide Dogs Ophthalmic research grants programme has provided over eleven million pounds of funding. The coronavirus has certainly highlighted lots of the wonderful efforts made by many people

assisting those less fortunate than themselves but sadly it also brought out the worst in a small number of others. One young lady was refused access to a well-known supermarket with her guide dog - it can prove very difficult trying to teach social distancing to a dog!. When she was admitted to another supermarket someone tried to steal items from her shopping basket, while another shopper decided it would be a great idea to actually kick her dog! On a lighter note a young man explained how difficult it had been keeping his guide dog amused at home and said he had been counting the days to normality when his “best friend” could start guiding him to the pub again! Some of you may remember a gentleman from Norfolk – Alan Smethurst aka “The Singing Postman” best known for his hit record “Ave yu got a loight boy”. Alan had a childhood sweetheart called Pam, a short lived romance as Alan's family moved away. The two were not to meet for many years, by which time Pam was sadly losing her sight but fortunately had her own guide dog. Alan wrote a song making reference to them both entitled “She lived in a house called I Dunno”, based on the fact that the house Pam lived in was actually called “I Dunno”. One of the neighbour's houses was called “Nor Do I”. They always said the 60's were strange and that if you could remember them you probably were not actually there. I can't confirm or deny this as I don't remember! This month Dauntsey Farm Shop is holding an Easter themed raffle to raise money for their “name a puppy” fund. Riverwatch Kissing frogs When thinking of fresh waters in spring, frogs are amongst the most charismatic wildlife that comes to mind. But, as a generality, amphibians – newts, frogs and toads – tend to fare the best in smaller pools, and particularly in seasonal wetlands that tend to dry out in summer. Here, they are safest from the ravages of large fish and other predators. In their natural condition myriad transitional wetlands would be a feature of river corridors. However, modern farmed and developed landscapes have removed much of this wet wealth, to the great detriment of our amphibian and other fauna. Yet frogs remain as symbolic of spring as Easter bunnies, daffodils and ‘lambs’ tails’, whether on hedgerow hazels or attached to lambs themselves! Children and adults alike (mainly) love them, with their bulbous eyes and baritone croaks advertising the presence of breeding males as they return to ponds, as winter loosens its hold. Frogs have a familiar but fascinating and miraculous life cycle, masses of jelly-wrapped eggs hatching into tadpoles. Initially, these tadpoles have external gills and no legs but, metamorphosing over 4-5 months, they become perfect miniature ‘froglets’ that hop off into moist undergrowth and other hideyholes in late spring to live out an adult life feeding mainly on small, soft-bodied, invertebrates. Common frogs take between three and four years to reach maturity. Although they can live as long as ten or twenty years in captivity, frogs are subject to such a degree of predation from many animals – herons, foxes, badgers, some larger fishes and various other bird and mammal carnivores, that such venerable individuals are vanishingly scarce in the wild. Across most of Britain, we find just a single species: the common frog (Rana temporaria). However, the pool frog (Pelophylax lessonae) may once have been native to Norfolk, and has since been reintroduced from continental Europe in southern England, along with the marsh frog (Pelophylax ridibundus) and edible frog (Pelophylax esculentus). The American bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) has also bred and become locally established in the UK as an accidental introduction. Globally, around 4,740 frog species are known. However, alarmingly, 120 (about 2.5%) of this global total have gone extinct just since 1980. The common frog is, alas, far less common in Britain today. Globally, a fungal plague is decimating frog populations. Added to this pressure is a massive loss of suitable habitat. 65% of the UK’s small ponds were lost, largely due to agricultural intensification during the 20th century, but exacerbated by increasing urban sprawl and associated infrastructure. As noted, fish ponds generally provide unfavourable

habitat as fish are amongst the principal predators of tadpoles, along with a panoply of carnivorous invertebrates. Ideal habitat for frogs, as for other amphibians, is provided by temporary pools which “wet up” in winter and spring but then dry out in the summer ensuring that fish predators cannot establish. In light of the scale of environmental change we have subjected on our landscape, it is increasingly hard for frogs to maintain viable populations and to spread between ever more fragmented suitable pools. This paucity of natural habitat reinforces the importance of garden ponds, which can provide a critical substitute habitat, underpinning the viability of frog populations in some areas. Frogs fare best, for obvious reasons, in wildlife ponds or larger ponds with well-vegetated margins, particularly where fish are absent. We can all do our bit to encourage frogs, to enjoy their continued presence in our lives and to help them move through the landscape. Interestingly, we know from countless films and television programmes that frogs go “Ribbit, Ribbit”… only they mainly don’t! Some species near Hollywood do and, since their calls feature in so many movie soundtracks, there is a misplaced assumption that this is a more general frog call. In fact, the call of our native common frog is limited only to breeding males in early spring, sounding more like a farty croak than anything! Mark Everard

Corona Virus

Coronavirus: a year on

Lockdown 3 has probably been the most difficult lockdown to cope with. The weather creates its own difficulties at this time of year, without the added stress of enforced isolation whilst we wait for this crisis to pass or to be controlled. I hope that by the time you are reading this, we shall be well on the way to getting our more vulnerable friends and family vaccinated and we look forward to getting back to some sort of normality with the brighter and warmer days. Everyone accepts that this last year has had a massive effect on all of us; whether or not we contracted the virus. With gyms closed, some are appreciating the local walks and the landscape around us much more. On the other hand, not everyone is able to get out and may have lost some mobility as a result of this. Technology has been wonderful with so many more of us using Zoom, Teams, Skype and a load of other methods of keeping in touch with friends and family. Some phone companies capped call charges so that the cost of keeping in touch by phone didn’t limit contact. But despite these positive things, I think we have all experienced anxiety for the future, loneliness and sense of being isolated. I have taken the following from the NHS website. It was written before these strange times and the advice needs to be used in line with current restrictions, but it may offer some ideas and help, particularly as we look forward to a reduction in the lockdown restrictions. Things to try: • try talking about your feelings to a friend, family member, health professional or counsellor. You could also contact Samaritans, call: 116 123 or email: jo@samaritans.org if you need someone to talk to • consider joining a group or class that focuses on something you enjoy; you could ask to go along and just watch first if you're feeling nervous • consider visiting places where you can just be around other people – for example, a park, the cinema or a cafe • consider peer support, where people use their experiences to help each other. • If you have access to the internet: • Find out more about peer support on the Mind website • try the 6 ways to feel happier, which are simple lifestyle changes to help you feel more in control and able to cope • find out how to raise your self-esteem • listen to free mental wellbeing audio guides • search and download relaxation and mindfulness apps or online community apps from the NHS apps library 10

But: do not try to do everything at once; set small targets that you can easily achieve • do not focus on the things you cannot change – focus your time and energy into helping yourself feel better • do not try to compare yourself to others. On social media you usually only see things people want to share • do not tell yourself that you're alone – many people feel lonely at some point in their life and support is available • do not use alcohol, cigarettes, gambling or drugs to relieve loneliness; these can all contribute to poor mental health I hope this may offer some help and, as ever, I am around for general help and support on a wide variety of issues including transport, mobility and safety around the home and reducing the feeling of loneliness. Seagry Pre-school Hello everyone. The first half of our term has been full of fun and interest. The chilly weather has enabled us to go on a hunt for beautiful cobwebs, frost and ice. We have a pair of robins that visit our garden and we often hear them chatting to each other. The children decided to help them in the cold weather by putting out food for them which included seeds, apples and fat balls. We have enjoyed outdoor activities like painting in the snow with food colouring, the children then used the coloured snow to make snow castles. The children all had fun finding things to make ice art. They filled a tray with leaves, conkers, shells, water and then put them in the freezer to freeze. The ice trays looked lovely and the children liked breaking them up and watching them melt. Our ship became a camp; the children pretended to sleep in it, made a campfire and made hot chocolate (muddy water!) very delicious!! Inside we have been looking at animals from cold climates. The tuff tray became a snowy land with polar bears, penguins, snowy owls, wolves and Inuit’s, who had an igloo, canoe and sleigh. From this the children asked if they could make a snowy owl which looks very effective collaged with lace, wool, cotton wool and felt.

During one of our snack times we had an interesting discussion after a child said 'if I didn't have hands I couldn't pick things up?' We talked about the fact some people don't have hands and asked the children how they thought they could pick things up without using your hand and they thought using feet would be good. We tried this out by filling a tuff tray with toys and the children tried to pick them up with great success! We also talked about other things you may be able to do with your feet like writing and painting, the children wanted to try painting so we did, the children really liked it and grinned while doing it! We also tried painting with our mouths using cotton buds. The children are very proud of the works of art they created! After half term we will be changing our topic to 'New beginnings'. Spring is in the air and the preschool garden with the appearance of the shoots of bulbs so we will be celebrating spring with abundance! Take care of each other. Many thanks. Helen Cooper xx

Our children at Walter Powell Pre-school have been busy exploring ‘Ice’, they have loved making ice art and looking at the changes between liquids and solids. They had a wonderful time with sand & foam – who knew shaving foam and sand could be so much fun! We also had a slime day when the children were able to play with slime and discover how stretchy it was! We have enjoyed a lot of outdoor time and as always our Den days have been a highlight of each week this term!

Somerfords’ Walter Powell School At the time of writing, some of our students come to school daily for face-to-face teaching, whilst others learn from home. To ensure every child has access to a quality education in these exceptional times, Mrs Candy and Miss Shibley record videos explaining the learning. We are using a learning platform called Dojo, to upload and share our curriculum studies. The staff continue to be extremely proud of the students for their engagement in school life – whether it be remotely or in school. Many thanks to our school community families for all they are doing to keep the wheels of learning turning! Together we are stronger.These are a few displays that the children in school have created.

Thank you for our new books We would like to say a big thank you to St Marys Land Trust who kindly donated some money to the school and it has enabled us to purchase some wonderful topic books on Antarctica for all the children to use. Thank you for our new electronic devices We would also like to say a huge thank you to the local community who has kindly donated electronic devices to the school during this period of home learning. Governance - Elections

The Local Elections are, at the time of writing, still scheduled for 6 May, at which point the entire Parish Council stands down and 9 new Councillors will be elected. Have you thought of standing? See separate article on what Parish Councils really do for the communities they serve. The Parish Council would like to take the opportunity to thank Cllrs Chris Blount and Mel Hourigan for their valuable contribution. Both have stated that they are standing down at the forthcoming Elections so there are definitely vacancies. Why don’t you give it a go?

Best Kept Village Competition The Parish Council has decided to enter again this year. In 2019 we came 3rd in the medium village category. Can we do better this year? Remember it is the “best kept” village not the “prettiest” so minimum litter is important as are well maintained front gardens, ditches and hedges. The Free Gardens with its colourful allotment plantings and trees is an undoubted jewel in our crown.

Broadfield Farm Housing Development Wiltshire Council’s Street Naming department has confirmed that the addresses on the current development will start at 6 Broadfield Farm and not simply be 1 Broadfield etc. as per the site brochure. The developer has obtained a five day notice to cut back ash trees and the boundary hedge w/c 8 February. Planning permission is not required as the land lies outside the conservation area. Several residents had complained that Royal Mail delivery delays had meant that the Gleeson’s consultation letter for phase 2 development was not received by many till after the closing date for responses. The Parish Council has requested an extension and responses will be accepted until 8 February. Gleesons have written individually to residents who complained about the postal delays emphasising that they are still able to take residents’ comments into account until the proposals are finalised.

Brook Farm Somerbrook Development White Horse Housing Association now has three 2 bed mid terrace affordable/ social homes available for rent and one for shared ownership with three more shared ownership due in May, two more in September plus one to rent. The rentals are being advertised to applicants who must be on the Homes4Wiltshire register and the shared ownership ones are being marketed locally and in surrounding parishes. Highway & Footpath Matters £5,000 has been set aside for Footpath Improvements – installation of kissing gates, stiles and improved signage. Cllr Gravell will be liaising with landowners to find out which stiles they would prioritise for replacement and how they are best to be installed. If any member of the public has strong views on this please contact Cllr Gravell or the Clerk. It has been suggested that the Parish Council invest in larger (or more) rubbish bins. The ones opposite the Church and Longacre are particularly prone to overflow! Do you have a view on this? Flooding: Some definite improvements have been made along the Startley Road thanks to landowner interventions. The Parish Council exhorts all landowners to keep their ditches clear and flowing for the benefit of the community at large. Mud: There have been more complaints about the state of Shiptons Lane and Hollow Street and the Parish Council is grateful to whichever (band of) residents cleared it. In future Mr Woolcock has offered the use of his gator and road sweeping brush. Speeding: Interim results of the Metro Counts on West Street and Dauntsey Road have been received but the final surveys cannot be carried out until after Lockdown. The criteria for traffic survey interventions (Community Speed Watch versus Police Enforcement) are based on the 85% percentile speed (being the speed at or below which 85% traffic is travelling.) Play Area Additions Wiltshire Cllr Sturgis reported that, notwithstanding the Play Area being in a conservation area, the Parish Council as a branch of the Local Authority has permitted development rights such that no planning permission is required for a structure up to 4 m tall and 200 cubic metres by volume. Not that any Shelter the Parish Council provide would be anything like that size! Cllr Griffiths is working to come up with the most suitable design and will be consulting informally with parents. The installation of the climbing frame is expected to start in April when the ground conditions should have improved.

Local councils Why not become a Parish Councillor? Are you looking for a worthwhile and rewarding way to help your local community? Have you thought of standing (for election) to your Parish Council? Don’t always assume that somebody else will do it. Could you represent the views of local people and ensure that community interests are taken into account? Parish Councils are the lowest tier of Government democracy in action and arguably the most local. The Parish Council is a “Body Corporate” which means that it is an “it” in law and that the decisions it takes are the responsibility of the Council as a whole. Great Somerford has 9 Councillors and meets every month except August & December. Little Somerford has 7 Councillors and meets at least 7 times a year. Each Council employs a part-time Clerk who is the proper officer responsible for general administration, finance and providing professional advice. So what does the Parish Council typically do? It represents and serves the whole community and is responsible for the services it provides. It establishes policies for action, raises an annual Precept (part of your Council Tax bill) and decides how this public money will be spent on behalf of the community. It must spend lawfully and achieve value for money. • Consultation on planning applications • Campaigning for better services • Grass cutting to open spaces • Consultation over traffic signing, speed limits and other related matters • Consultation over street naming • Parish facilities such as bus shelters, seats, notice boards • Maintenance of the churchyard or cemetery • Provision of allotments (Little Somerford) • Provision and maintenance of Play Areas and Play Equipment • Maintenance of footpaths

How do we know what it’s been doing? Meeting Notices and Agendas are published on Parish Notice Boards and on their websites w w w. g r e a t s o m e r f o r d p a r i s h c o u n c i l . c o . u k ; www.littlesomerfordparishcouncil.gov.uk; with a summary report being provided to the Signpost magazine. Parish Council meetings are normally held in the village hall or community room and the public and press have a right to attend. During the Covid pandemic meetings have moved to Zoom or similar. How can I become a Councillor? Parish Councillors are elected every 4 years and the next election is scheduled for 6 May unless Covid forces a postponement till September. Any UK or EU citizen aged 18+ who is registered to vote in the area, lives in the village or within 3 miles of it or who owns land or works in the village can put themselves forward. Proposer and seconder needed. If more than are needed apply then there is an election. If not enough candidates stand, then all who volunteered are co-opted as Councillors after the Election Day. Some current members of Great Somerford PC will not be re-standing for election so there will definitely be vacancies if nobody else comes forward.
