This past Sunday May 13, 2012 we had the opportunity to attend a show from Buenos Aires. We felt attracted by the name Tango in the title of the show. . The theatre is located on 42nd street, between 7 and 8th avenue. The new 42nd street is full of vendors and tourists. We knew about Tango close embrace, Tango Salon, Tango Fantasia but Aerial Tango sounded different, maybe a little too much. Certainly we imagined that it would require at least some dancing in order to perform such feats. New Victory Theatre is of a small capacity. The show is aimed for families and we went to the Sunday matinee at 5 pm. To my enjoyment there was live music, six members of a musical ensemble and one singer. A piano, a violin, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, a bandoneon and also a percussionist who commanded a Vibraphone and a battery set. The singer complimented the ensemble. There were three couples and the director Brenda Angiel, three technicians who from backstage performed along with the dancers in the manipulation of the “ Aerial modern dance is a sub-genre of modern dance first recognized in the United States in the 1970s. The choreography incorporates an apparatus often attached to the ceiling, allowing performers to explore space in three-dimensions. The ability to incorporate vertical, as well as horizontal movement paths, allows for innovations in choreography and movement vocabulary.i I personally liked all the numbers, but Tango it is not. The music, the bandoneon in the ensemble and the singer gives you the air of Buenos Aires. But the complicated movements in the air at times off the musical beat. The feeling of thrill you get out of watching these dancers at times disappears when the riggings are too obvious, but the creativity of the choreographer and the whole troupe tries to prevent this thrill from going away. Although the numbers had been planned for a family show, some numbers even in the air had a risquĂŠ presentation. One such number: Calidotanguero. The presentation included a non aerial Cumparsita was a breath of fresh air that was welcome by the audience. Overall the presentation is entertaining. If you have never ever watched an aerial show you are in to discover a new dance art form that will keep you excited and will stimulate your brain towards different creativity projects or maybe you would want to try it yourself.
