President’s Letter Dear Fellow Members, reetings! We have had a terrific start to the ASID year. Storytellers was a resounding success in October. So many people came together to make that night possible and I want to say a very special thank you to our sponsors, our speakers, the committee, and to you our members! It was heartwarming and encourage to see so many of you out and about, mingling and enjoying the evening. We are working very hard to bring you enjoyable and educational events to inspire you and to motivate you. As you can see, our magazine is getting a facelift! We want the ASID Georgia Chapter to be the place that you come for inspiration, business practices, and to connect with your peers and colleagues. To that end we are honing our quarterly magazine into a tool that you can use for gathering ideas, exploring products, and learning more about the business of interior design. We have a lot in store for you in the upcoming months…if you aren’t thinking about it yet, you should put the Design Excellence Awards on your radar. The planning committee is hard at work making arrangements for the best awards show yet! We are returning to the Summerour Studios this year for an event that will be bigger and better than ever! So…enter your projects into the awards – there are some amazing opportunities for publishing and for tours! In closing, we the Board of Directors for the Georgia Chapter of ASID want to be accessible to you, the members. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We have set up email accounts to make this easier year after year. I can be reached at President@asidga.org. I look forward to hearing from you and to seeing you at our next event!

nd the Winner is… Last spring, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine paired up with iStar Residential to create a design competition offered exclusively to the members of the ASID Georgia Chapter. This extraordinary opportunity drew over 60 firms to apply for the coveted spot at the top. Over 16,000 readers cast their ballot for their favorite design. When the dust settled, Robert Grayson, ASID and Andrew Harris, ASID of GraysonHarris Interiors + Design were awarded the con-
tract to design a 3400 SF model suite for the Residences at Mandarin Oriental - Atlanta. While Harrison Design Associates developed the interior architecture of the space, GHI+D created a lifestyle experience with a nod to the Golden Age of Hollywood. Through their relationships with and support from ASID Industry partners, the team was able to overcome a 10 week turnaround and tight budgetary constraints to make the magic happen.

{What Inspires You?} By Fernanda Crawford, Allied ASID
Michel Boyd, Karen Ferguson, Tara Rae Hill, Hillary Mancini, Shon Parker, Melanie Turner, Sherrell Watson and Jen Bruno captivated their audience with images, stories and exquisite projects that detailed their individual fonts of inspiration. Their stimulating and powerful presentations enthralled over 300 attendees. The presentation format followed the pecha-kucha guidelines, allowing 20 slides with only 20 seconds per slide, the concision and intensity of which kept everyone’s attention levels very high. The Estate and Gardens also provided the perfect setting for all the sponsors to showcase their respective product resources in twelve distinct rooms.

Interior designers complete the team – how would it be possible to recognize the best in classicism without the aesthetic and sense of incredible designers!
“
“
In 2014, the Shutze Awards will celebrate their eighth year of recognizing the exceptional achievement of the finest practitioners of architectural, interior, and landscape design and construction. Over the past several years, the Awards Organizing Committee has made a concerted effort to involve interior designers on the committee and to encourage submittal of their projects.
Michelle Moody, Chairman of the Board, of the Southeast Chapter ICAA and past chair of the Shutze Awards
ASID members, Barbara Howard, Barbara Shelton, Susan Currie and Teri Duffy, have served on the Organizing Committee. For two years, Terry also chaired the Friends of Shutze Party, the event held the night prior to the awards to thank and honor the generous sponsors who make the awards celebration possible. So the call is on for ASID Members! Join us on March 8th at the Piedmont Driving Club for the 2014 Shutze Awards! For the first time in its history, the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center allowed their Christmas Showhouse to be designed exclusively by ASID designers! Over a dozen of our star designers lit up the magnificent 27,000 sq. ft. mansion with their breathtaking spaces accented with holiday trimmings. Director, Peggy Johnson, called ASID and Callanwolde “the perfect combination” and owes much to ASID for the thousands of visitors who came to see the inspiring rooms set within the Gothic-Tudor style home.

designer’s top
1. What has been your most exciting project
6. What is your most valuable tool of the
to date?
I find that I am always excited about my next project, currently I am working on a 1922 built Philip Shutze/Neil Reed designed Italian Baroque villa with a ballroom!
2. What do you feel is your biggest responsibility
Melanie Turner, ASID
as a professional Interior Designer?
Vision Boards are my best used tool. Pinterest is the best tool we have for our clients. We create customized boards for each project to give our clients and even better feel of the space and styles we will be incorporating.
7. How do you build the brand for
I believe in the importance of passing on knowledge through mentoring the younger generation of designers. There is so much to be learned throughout our careers and I feel that it’s our duty to keep the practice at a high level. More importantly I feel that it is the responsibility of the design schools to create internship programs so that when students graduate they enter the workforce with something to offer fast paced design firms.
3. What has been your biggest challenge to date? Show houses. Everyone is under the impression that these spaces are to be the best of what a designer is capable of when in reality it is very much a dance between what is available, lead time, and budget.
4. What classic chair are you? Klismos. It is one of the oldest chairs in history. A classic beauty in any style room from tradition to modern depending on how you style it.
5. Who is your designer crush?
design trade?
Melanie Turner Interiors?
I started by designing my own spaces in order to show what I was capable of and having that professionally photographed. Being part of show houses and creating strong relationships with my vendors are two other important steps in the process.
8. What do you “Day Dream” about? Looking at art and history books or fashion magazines allow me to daydream. It is such precious time for a creative person.
