President’s Message

he ASID CA North Board of Directors ended 2015 with a fabulous Holiday Party for our members! Thanks to Drew Altizer Photography, the photos in this issue of SF Design are to celebrate all the members and colleagues of ASID. Thanks to Coup D’Etat, who provided the San Francisco venue and Macadamia Catering while party goers engaged in a golden celebration that was bold enough to be different. The Board started 2016 with a refreshing Napa Valley weekend retreat! Words cannot express my sincere gratitude to Brian Woolery at Silver Trident Winery, who opened up a beautiful showroom to the Board for an all-day planning meeting. The hospitality was fabulous, to say the least!! Silver Trident Winery in Yountville, CA welcomes ASID members with their clients to use its conference room, and enjoy its wines in the Tasting Room, a showroom for Ralph Lauren Home. We also connected with our wonderful ASID IP’s in the Napa Valley area: Gordon Heuther Studio + Gallery and Chateau Sonoma. January 2016, our ASID Industry partner Sherwin-Williams has rolled out its color mix. When Alabaster (SW 7008), Sherwin-Williams 2016 Color of the Year, sees its way into home offices, entryways, and bedrooms, everyone will encounter mindfulness and become unafraid - no matter what happens. Stay tune for an upcoming CEU and learn more about the SW colors. Save the date for April 6, 2016, “The White Party.” February 2016, Cathleen Gouveia, President-Elect, continues to support legislation that protects designers’ interests. As we build relationships with elected officials in Sacramento and Washington D.C., we would love to hear your personal case studies. Spring is right around the corner! The focus of this season will be to engage and network with membership, Industry Partners (IPs), student mentorships and a membership campaign to recruit new members and IP’s. We want to plug SF Design readers into the industry trends you witness. Please submit any article suggestions, to Katherine Tincher, ASID Ca North Communications Director.

art matters Sitting at his father’s kitchen table, creating a stained glass window, 17-year old Gordon Huether made a life decision: he wanted to honor the spirit of humanity by bringing beauty and meaning into the world through art. In 1987 he founded his Studio in Napa, California. Almost 30 years later he continues to fulfill his mission, creating art for every conceivable kind of building, home and landscape. Huether’s artistic career began with the exploration of glass: studying the interplay between light and color and the artistic possibilities of refraction and reflection. Other media followed, moving between highly refined, elegant materials like polished aluminum and dichroic glass to gritty, repurposed and salvaged materials like rusted steel and weathered wood. Materials used for a project – whether it be a fine art piece, a private commission, or a public art piece - are dictated by the story to be told. The over-riding goal for any project is about shaping a story and expressing an idea, not just about creating an object of beauty.

2016 Spring Issue.indd 10 - PB - VOLUME I SPRING 2016 | CA NORTH CHAPTER

4/6/16 3:50 PM

Privately commissioned work and public art are not about Gordon as an artist, but about the space and the people who use that space. The outcome is always an artwork that is new and unexpected, and uniquely cohesive to its surroundings. With each new project, Gordon Huether and his Studio Team are committed to the highest quality standards. His team of skilled professionals is internationally recognized for their innovative approach and creative craftsmanship in all areas of glass fabrication, welding and metal working.

continued

Large-scale, site-specific work has long been Huether’s focus before he discovered the intriguing variety of the scale, scope and approach of private commissions and fine art. With his fine art Huether has free reign and the work oftentimes addresses very personal matters. Privately commissioned projects foster an intimate, yet collaborative dynamic. Relationships and collaboration are as important to the artist as his work. “The bond I build with commissioning clients, designers, architects or fine art collectors often develop into valued friendships”. For the Heimat Series (on the cover) Huether used materials and imagery of a personal nature. Born to German immigrant parents, the artist has maintained and is influenced by strong ties to his ancestral country. The characters - from a German fairy tale read to him as a child - cavort across pages from letters written and illustrated by Huether’s great-grandfather.

growing your career through networking - 14 - VOLUME I SPRING 2016 | CA NORTH CHAPTER

2016 Spring Issue.indd 14

4/6/16 3:51 PM

! ? t a wno wh congratulations!

Since you have found your way to the Emerging Professionals section of SFDesign, I’ll assume one or two things about you: one, you are a relatively new interior design graduate early in your career, or two, you are actively evolving your career as an interior designer regardless of how long it has been since you started out. In some ways we are all “Emerging Professionals” since we continue to grow and pursue new ideas and opportunities throughout our career. Does the “emerging” ever end? Well, I think you’ll find the very reason why the world of interior design is so exciting is directly related to the many opportunities for growth available. My name is Chris, and I am the Owner and Principal at Chris M. Shields Interior Design, a residential interior design firm based in San Francisco, California. I have the privilege of writing this article and serving as your Emerging Professionals chairperson for the California North chapter of the ASID for the 2015/2016 season. We might have already met as my career has grown and evolved since graduating from design school. From 2006 until the present, I have had the opportunity to work in various roles for some successful design firms, and I was a sales representative at the iconic Kneedler Fauchere showroom here in San Francisco for four years. In 2014, I made the decision to start my own business and I haven’t looked back since.

here’s my first tip on how to start making networking more effective for you!

Over the next four issues of Design SF, I’ll share some effective tips and lessons I’ve learned while growing my career within the firms I’ve worked for as well as when I started pounding the pavement as I started my own design business. It all starts with creating some new habits.

As Stephen R. Covey discusses in his book, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” a habit is the intersection of knowledge, skills and desire (Covey, p 47). Can you guess the area where all the work really comes from? Taking your career into your own hands and nurturing your desire can be the most difficult step. But consider this… think of all the effort (and financial investment) you have already put into your design education. I bet you can let that light your fire and motivate you throughout your career. You have a lot to offer to the people you around you… and there are benefits awaiting you! Here is the knowledge you need to develop your networking skills. Through networking you are building relationships, and it is perfectly acceptable if these relationships become friendships. Wouldn’t it be great if all of your friends were engaged in your career, listening and always going to bat for you when opportunities present themselves? Who doesn’t want to help a friend? Through networking this is possible, and that is why I am going to start with one of the last steps in the networking process to help make this an effective strategy for you.

1. it’s all about the follow through and follow up: While this is the last step in the process, it is often the step everyone neglects. While you are networking, it is common that needs are discovered and you can fulfill that need. Follow-up, give the information, make the introduction and live up to the commitment you made. Use email to document your fulfillment… then it’s up to the receiver to act on it. Furthermore, always set your next meeting to network before your current session ends. Building relationships takes time, exposure and repetition. Payoffs occur over time, so scheduling follow up meetings is your investment in the process. You can’t expect the person you are networking with to remember you and your goals if you only meet once or infrequently. You’ll have to judge the frequency of your get togethers, but I’d recommend meeting at least once every couple of months. In the next issue we’ll explore creating professional and authentic networking conversations.

thanks for reading!

Chapter Briefs Hello and thank you for being a part of ASID! Our chapter board is getting into full swing, and I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to contribute to this publication. We are planning on expanding our content to include design business related articles to help you further your career and/or company and get the most out of your membership. In this issue you’ll find the first installment of our networking series composed by the fabulous Christopher Shields, our Emerging Professionals Director. This is also the first issue that includes a calendar of events and information on CEU’s so you can stay in the know. We welcome any contributors! If you are an expert in your field or have a topic you would like to explore, please be in touch. The next big series we are beginning to research is “Tools for Design”, which will explore business software, project management systems, social media, modeling and rendering programs and services, and much more. We’d like to start the conversation about what tools our community is using, and to share feedback so that veterans and newbies alike can find the processes that work best for them. Do you swear by StudioIT? Autocad? Or are you trying out new tools to see what works for you? Interested in Instagram, but not sure how it can help your business? We want to hear from you. Please join the conversation, and write to us at Communications@can.asid.org I look forward to developing this magazine with you, and to sharing the wealth of talent, knowledge, and experience we have in our community!

Cheers! Katherine

We partnered with the Peninsula chapter in November to hold a town hall gathering with Jim Brewer, ASID Vice President of Government and Public Affairs. Industry Partner and Platinum Sponsor All Natural Stone in Burlingame hosted a fun and informative evening, and proceeds went to the Interior Design Coalition of California’s efforts to advocate for Interior Designers’ right to practice in CA. The objective of the Town Hall Meeting with was to unify all of the various voices within our trade and form an alliance to effect changes beneficial to our industry. Jim urges all interior designers, whether they be ASID, CID, NCDIQ, NKBA, IIDA, IDCC, AIA or unaffiliated to join ”One Voice”. This system will keep designers appraised of key votes, initiatives, and matters that affect our trade. There will be subsequent Town Meetings and we urge all members to text “OneVoice on the Hill” to 52886 or visit http://p2a.co/iFeUrkV to sign up online. The only way we can succeed at obtaining fair rights for designers is if we stand UNITED. Thank You CAL NO Chapter Sponsors:

Townhall Cocktails event held in collaboration with the peninsula Chapter where we both hosted ASID Jim Brewer from National Government Affairs & Legislation.

Jim mapped out the practice rights by state as well as the progress he an ASID National have made to date, and this demonstrated how far we still have to go.
