President’s Message
AMERICAN SOCIETY OF INTERIOR DESIGNERS
The generosity of Industry Partners (IPs) was the highlight of this summer. ASID members enjoyed delicious nibbles, and shared ideas on how to create a beautiful bathroom with luxury fixtures by Trevor, at a brunch hosted by Premier Marketing.
ASID CA NORTH CHAPTER OFFICE
Riggs Distributing, Inc., an independent distributor of Sub-Zero Refrigeration, Wolf Cooking, and ASKO cleaning appliances, hosted a brunch and seminar for intermediate SketchUp users. Attendees learned model organization best practices, reporting tools, and shading options.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Cambria Gallery welcomed ASID members to the 2016 ASID Membership Appreciation at its showroom with sweet and savory treats. As Silver Trident Winery poured exquisite Napa wine, and Farrow & Ball donated giveaways to guests, the inclusive and relaxing celebration easily became one of the best events for our membership this season. While the Class of 2016 ended on a high note celebrating their graduation accomplishments at Urban Woods. The foliage is changing, and the nights are becoming noticeably earlier. In October 2016, ASID is a cultural partner sponsor of the San Francisco Fall Art & Antiques Show. This international show features approximately 60 United States and European luxury dealers, offering for sale furniture, silver, glass, and other fine and decorative arts. Lectures of interest to designers include talks on how to discern fakes and forgeries in art, and how to use animal imagery to symbolize spontaneity and independence. Fall marks the transition from summer into winter, and the transition of my role as President of 2015-2016 to Cathleen Gouveia, President Elect. When the 2016-2017 ASID Cal North Board of Directors in inducted October 1, 2016, I will leave knowing I gave this organization my all, and did everything I wanted. Serving as President was more than what I thought it would be. Under my leadership, the 2015-2016 Board of Directors took life on. We built relationships with legislators, improved our finances, mentored design students to be bold, and aligned with IPs. In casual, professional, and formal settings, the impermanence of each interaction left me something to remember. The ASID Cal North Chapter operates in a spirit of confidence. I leave emerging design professionals, IPs, and ASID members with the choice resource for education, opportunity, and community.

HAVING SOUL
Mankind has long been fascinated with the beauty, mystery and symbolism of the animal kingdom. The Latin, Animalis literally means “Having Soul”, and at the heart of all art, antiques and decorative objects is a boundless, collective soul—that of the artist, the collector, the observer and the history of the piece.

hitch your wagon to find your team
I’m glad you are enjoying this SF Design series targeting the Emerging Professional and how the use of networking can positively impact your career inside the office and out. This is part three of our four-part series Networking is a simple construct with a straightforward process. As with most things in life, the biggest challenge is doing the work! You have to put the “work” into your
net-“work”ing. Whether you are looking to grow your skills, get assigned to a project you’re interested in or drum up new business for your firm (Attention: business owners and employees!), if you can create a new networking habit for yourself, the “work” will pay off. Here’s my third tip on how to start making networking more effective for you!
3. educate your sales team: Everyone you network with can become your champion, your best sales person. The ultimate goal in networking is to clearly communicate who you are and what you would like to accomplish such that your networking partner will always have you in their mind as they encounter opportunity. I encourage you to start your networking meeting by exchanging an infomercial with each other. Your infomercial should be a brief introduction that states who you are, what you do, something memorable you have accomplished lately, what you are looking for and what you think would be a good fit or solution for you. Here is an example:
Hi Stephanie, thanks for meeting with me today. I’m Matt from the textiles team and I’ve been building my passementerie knowledge and layering skills on the Donahue project. I’ve really grown to love designing soft goods for our client’s bedrooms, and I’m looking to gain more experience and exposure in designing these goods for our clients. Are you on a project, or do you know of a project that might benefit from these skills? I think we could add some sales to our projects by incorporating these goods. I would appreciate you thinking of me if you hear of these opportunities. Just think of Matt the pillow karate-chop expert. This narrative is a basic example. Note the individual sections of the infomercial: being professional, an introduction, sharing background, talking about your interests, asking about opportunities, sharing potential benefits and leaving with a memorable idea. You can accomplish all of this within 30 seconds. This infomercial is your elevator-pitch and it will evolve as you grow and change interests. The rest of your networking meeting will evolve from your infomercial. Now imagine if you were sharing these conversations with all the people in your office. Think about how much you can learn about the career interests of others. How can you help your colleagues accomplish their goals? What if everyone else was doing the same for you? Principals, can you image an office that is so interconnected that all of your employees are allocated to their interests? How could creating an environment of sharing like this impact your bottom line? How would it feel to really get to know what is truly important to all of your employees? Would conducting employee reviews and development plans become more enjoyable if they occurred over an entire year in networking conversations? Think of how tied-in you would be with your employee’s growth. Does this sound like a win-win scenario? In the next issue, my final article will focus on empathic listening and how being an empathic listener will help you cement vital career relationships for years to come.
thanks for reading!

The Tree of Life is an environmentally friendly assisted living facility for the senior adults. This Senior Living community is designed to provide a complete living experience within the environment where senior adults have access to a luxurious living space and healthcare resources while maintaining their active lifestyles and well-being. The color scheme employed for the project is based on natural hues derived from the four seasons.
- Norma Ryles, Allied ASID

9/27/16 1:06 PM
When Norma set out to design the Tree of Life Senior Community, she did so armed with the knowledge that more than 10,000 baby boomers are turning 65 every day. At the annual meeting of the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) the following was forecasted: • Americans will proactively choose senior living. Americans’ perception of senior living is evolving. Increasingly, people are not viewing senior living as a step on the way to higher-acuity care but rather as somewhere to age in place. • The senior living and healthcare industries will converge. As healthcare systems focus on population health and seek to improve outcomes and reduce costs, they will need to collaborate with senior living providers. Assisted living communities will develop partnerships with home healthcare providers, hospitals and physician practices to provide integrated services.
• Assisted living communities will vastly improve personal living spaces. With an eye on attracting a new generation of older adults, many assisted living communities will be adding amenities that resonate with boomers. Things like walk-in closets, spacious bathrooms, and fully equipped kitchenettes will provide a comfortable setting more like the homes they are used to living in. While still ensuring a sense of individual privacy, such communities will also feature landscaped gardens and beautiful architecture to appeal to the eye and heart of residents.
