Happy New Year! I just returned from the 2016 ASID Presidents Forum in LA. The forum brought all of our chapter presidents together for a weekend packed with leadership training, peer-to-peer sessions, and informative presentations. We heard from ASID CEO Randy Fiser and the national committees about emerging trends in our industry and the newest national programs, such as the ‘ASID Academy’ and the ‘One Voice’ movement.

President’s Letter

Did you know that the number of interior design jobs continues to grow and that US and Canadian designers specify over 68.5 BILLION dollars of products annually, a 35% increase since 2010. That’s a lot of buying power! The ASID Academy (an online learning management system) was recently launched to provide members with a convenient way to earn their CEU’s, further their knowledge, and to stay on top of the latest and greatest advances in the field. To learn how you can earn your CEU’s while lounging about in your PJs just follow this link: www.asid.org/education/asid-academy#.VpVU3PkrK00 ASID continues to advocate for our right to practice interior design. The CA Peninsula was one of the nation’s first chapters to hear the ‘One Voice’ message directly from Jim Brewer, VP of Government and Public affairs, at our joint meeting with CA North. The movement is committed to respond to and serve not just our members, but all interior designers across the country. The recent victory declaring that registered interior designers in the state of Florida may sign and seal interior design documents for submission to local building officials is proof that the movement is working. 2015 was closed out with our White Winter Masquerade Holiday Party at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga. We enjoyed the company of friends and colleagues, celebrated with and thanked our 2015 sponsors, and toasted the closing of yet another wonderful year. The generous support and commitment of our sponsors enables our chapter to continue to provide quality programs and events throughout the year. Special thanks and gratitude to Da Vinci Marble for sponsoring our joint meeting with NARI, All Natural Stone for their sponsorship of our joint meeting with CA North, and to the sponsors of our holiday celebration: Sherwin-Williams, Artistic Tile and Stone, Rebarts Interiors, Galleria Tile, The Integrated Lifestyle, University Electric, Belmont Hardware, All Natural Stone, Rohl, and Cambria. Please make it a point to show your support to the community that supports us. Here’s looking forward to a productive and prosperous 2016! with Luxe magazine to promote the overall value of interior design.

Jennifer Hale stated, “Design influences the human experience

on all levels. As designers we have the ability to transport people

by changing their environment. Our aim for the NVFF was to

inspire and engage festival guests through a hip, edgy and luxurious Hollywood setting.” Clearly the objective was achieved;

attendees couldn’t resist having their photos taken with friends

in front of the larger than life Pulp Fiction / Wine Country inspired

mural. This design is certain to have life well beyond the close of

What's Hot and What's Cool in Kitchen Appliances for 2016 By Jim Heintz | University Electric, Industry Partner ASID

Cooking appliances seemed to stagnate over the past several years. After the introduction of the convection ovens in the early 1990's there did not seem to be any really big breakthroughs in cooking. That is until recently. A few years ago the speedcook ovens took off. We saw the commercial division of Amana produce the FlashBake oven; GE has the Advantium; KitchenAid calls theirs the Ultima Cook oven. Miele used a more direct approach and named theirs the Speed Oven! Basically they all used a combination of halogen lighting, microwave, and radiant or convection heat to cook any number of products in about one third the time a conventional oven would take (when you account for preheating time of a standard oven). What is truly amazing is that they are able to produce a finished product that has the same taste, texture, and look of a traditional convection oven. The ovens contain up to 300 preprogrammed recipes to choose from as well as a customizing option. On the GE Monogram website they dedicate an entire section to the Advantium oven, complete with an array of recipes with demonstration and narration by Louisville local chefs Mark and Brian. Even if you don't own a speedcook oven, I suggest you check it out just for the entertainment value; those two are a kick! More recently than that, a number of brands have combined steam and convection in a smaller cavity oven with unbelievable results. Wolf, Thermador, Miele, Gaggenau, and others have produced a combination steam/convection oven that will deliver steam, convection, or a combination of both. Pure steam is perfect for fish, poultry, vegetables, and rice, while the convection is great for small portion meals (up to

a 13 lb turkey) with results like your full size oven. The combination of steam and convection has shown extraordinary finished products when cooking meat. Starting with steam to incorporate moist heat, then finishing with convection for the texture and appearance one expects from their favorite restaurant. Unlike a microwave, the combination steam/convection oven can be used to refresh leftovers rather than recooking the meal. The use of steam and a light amount of dry heat, last night's masterpiece can become today's gourmet lunch. I have seen stale French bread, as hard as Hunter Pence's baseball bat, become fresh and edible again! Instead of "I can't believe it's not butter!" now it is "I can't believe these are leftovers!" Not to be left out, the design area of appliances has had

some breakthroughs as well. The column style refrigerators and freezers from Sub Zero, Miele, Thermador, and others are a unique way of blending your fresh food storage into the cabinetry to the point of it vanishing from sight. The size variations allow them to be customized to fit the needs of each individual family. If you need more refrigeration and less freezer, or vice-versa, order it that way. If you need the refrigerator near the sink and the freezer near the pantry, put them there. Full height columns, undercounter units, and drawer units are all available for a completely flexible and customizable array of fresh and frozen foods storage options. I hope these new products will inspire you to let your creative juices flow when you are designing the kitchen and while you are cooking! One Voice Uncorked

CA PENINSULA

The following is is an interview with Jim Brewer, ASID's VP of Government & Public Affairs on One Voice by Yukari Haitani, Allied ASID, CID, CBD, CKD, President-Elect 2015/16. For a great example of how One Voice can help your practice, please read this article on the recent legislative victory in Florida http://bit.ly/ASIDFloridaLaw. You can also follow One Voice on Twitter at https://twitter.com/onevoiceasid to support this growing movement!

YUKARI. You have been engaged in state and federal legislative policy work for the last eight years. During that time, you

generated great results for the International Union of Painters & Allied Trade as the chief lobbyist. ASID is different from the industry in which you worked before. Could you tell us why you decided to work for ASID?

JIM. First, it is an honor to join ASID. It was an opportunity I could not refuse; to work with such strong willed, passionate, and talented people – both professionally and in their roles as ASID members – to affect the lives of so many in and outside of the industry across the nation and world.

I know it does seem like a leap from advocating for construction workers who perform corrosion prevention on our nation’s public and private infrastructure to interior designers. As you know, I am not an interior designer. However, I also have never been an industrial or commercial painter, nurse, elderly (yet), or teacher – all types of people and professions I have lobbied for in the past. The fact is my passion and motivation has always been to ensure the lives of those I work for are improved by decisions made at the local, state, and federal levels of the government every day.

YUKARI. Since One Voice is a new ASID initiative, many of our chapter members aren't familiar with it. Could you explain the vision behind One Voice?

JIM. Each day we use our voices and visions to reshape spaces – and lives of those occupying them – for the better. With those same voices working in unison, we have the power to design a better future for ourselves and our entire profession. To do that, every interior designer, soft or loud spoken, must speak up about the issues that affect their ability to practice interior design.

YUKARI. Can you summarize how One Voice will benefit our profession?

JIM. It is actually pretty simple: united we stand, divided we fall. From small busi-

ness owners to large firms, residential and commercial interior designers, students, and industry partners, the future of our profession will be heavily influenced by government decisions. Right now, elected officials are having conversations on issues that affect your lives and careers. That's why ASID established the One Voice program as a platform for every interior designer and industry partner to be heard by their elected officials, from state capitals to Washington, D.C. No matter your age or where you are in your career, your voice matters. One Voice is the microphone to speak out on the issues that affect you as an interior designer or industry partner. It is the avenue by which we act and move our elected officials to understand what we do as interior designers and how their decisions affect us.

YUKARI. Since One Voice is a national program, how can it help address individual state level issues?

Design for a Difference is the first-ever community driven designer movement that brings interior designers, other businesses and International Design Guild (IDG) showrooms together to makeover much needed spaces at local charities. Originated as a design contest in 2013 by the International Design Guild, the contest quickly evolved and grew into a movement in 2015 whereby 30 of the IDG showrooms did makeovers this year. Interiors & Textiles is an independent, design-driven retail showroom that partners with the design community and the residential home consumer to provide flooring and window coverings for any manner of home improvement projects. Interiors & Textiles engaged in a makeover of the lobby of the Community Services Agency (CSA) charity in Mountain View to transform the lobby into a “Welcome Center”. CSA is a charity that provides food and emergency financial assistance and a wide variety of social services for Mountain View and surrounding communities. The makeover was led by Mark Brunetz, nationally recognized celebrity designer and TV personality in HGTV’s “Clean House”, who mentored 4 design students from the local Interior Design programs of Cañada - 12 - ISSue IV | CA PENINSULA CHAPTER

College (Eileen Lin, Milan Chen) and West Valley College (Diane Forese, Michelle Tally). Diane Hurd, West Valley Interior Design school Director, also participated as an observer. The design process included a complete redesign of the space with changes in layout and new furnishings and fixtures. These furnishings and fixtures included new lighting fixtures, custom reception desk and cabinets, computer desks and credenza (donated by California Closets), new chairs, tables and ottomans (donated by Steelcase and Herman Miller), new kids technology area with iPads (donated by Pinewood School) and Alphabet Mural (donated by LBI Boyd), motorized Silhouette and roller shade window coverings (donated by Hunter Douglas), new painted walls & surfaces (paint donated by Dunn Edwards). A new cork plank flooring and buildouts of a pony wall and TV grid wall were also completed. Substantial funding was also provided by Linked IN. The makeover was done over one weekend in November 2015 and the completion and REVEAL of the makeover happened on November 17th. The nature of the Design for A Difference projects is to design and implement the project in complete secrecy to the constituents (CSA staff and clients) so as to provide a surprise at the REVEAL of the makeover.

Giving back benefits the local charity, its staff, volunteers as well as the design professionals and the local businesses who will be recognized in the community for their charitable contributions. The power of a Design for a Difference project is the winSpace planning & drawing - eileen lin win nature of it. Everyone benefits from their participation: the charity gets the makeover of a space, the designers (in this case, students) gained valuable experience on a real-world project and something to show on their project portfolio of work, the donors and IDG showroom garner exposure and publicity about their partnership and interest in good works for the community. My participation in this makeover was truly a life transformative experience. I believe the human experience involves some fundamental needs in that we all want to feel like we are part of something larger than ourselves and that we want to believe that what we do in life (and business in this case) matters. Engaging in this project completely fulfilled these needs. And, I believe, this was the case for all the designers on the project as well. Supporting and partnering with the design community is an integral part of the Interiors & Textiles business model. This makeover project provided a tremendous educational and learning opportunity for Interiors & Textiles staff, as well as the design students who do not typically have the opportunity to work on a real world project.

reception area - Before

It is my belief that today’s consumer undervalues what designers can do for them and this project reminds us all that interior design is not just about the decorating piece of interior design (“making things look pretty) but also can involve (on this project) necessary space planning and work flow process changes. The makeover was filmed for an HD production video that will be released in the February 2015 time frame. More detailed information, photos and videos about the Design for a Difference Mountain View makeover are available on the Interiors & Textiles website at www.interiorstextiles.com. To find out more about the national movement Design for a Difference and to see other makeover projects happening around the country, go to www.designforadifference.com. Along the lines of navigating the legislative minefield, here is a reminder of yet another legal issue interior designers need to be aware of, reprinted courtesy of CCID, the certifying board for Certified Interior Designers in California.

CAB slaps a $6,000 fine on an interior architect!

CCIDC has been extolling this warning for a long time now, and of course it was only a matter of time before it became true. The California Architects Board (CAB) has caught many individuals over the years for holding themselves out as an architect without a license for using such words as architect, architecture, and architectural when describing themselves, their services, and their agreements. For example, did you know that by describing your submittal documents as architectural drawings you are violating the law unless you are a licensed architect in this state? To do so is to hold oneself out as an architect. As a designer, certified or otherwise, you are preparing construction drawings, or documents, not architectural. We have been publishing articles in our newsletter and on our web site for a long time now for all unlicensed individuals to stay away from the title interior architect or interior architecture. To use these words is to imply that you are a licensed architect, when in fact, you are not.

ELLE DECOR’s

ELLE DECOR LOOKBOOK APP ELLE DECOR’s most popular online resource is now available as a free app, with hundreds of images, searchable by room and by style. Save your favorites in “My Design File” and share them with clients. An archive of our best images at your fingertips… AMAZING.

Where does this imaginary and illegal title come from? We're not quite sure of its origins but we do know that more and more interior design schools are adopting this title for their programs in order to give themselves a supposed marketing edge when trying to attract new students in an ever competitive marketplace. There are 60 interior design schools in California, and six of them offer interior architecture as the title of their accredited interior design programs. We also see a trend of promoting this language by other national interior design organizations, examining bodies and accrediting bodies, as a way of trying to elevate the profession beyond that of interior design, and into the realm of architecture without the education, skills, and experience of architects. This of course does not sit well with the architects or their professional organizations. If there is any doubt as to why the architectural profession resists licensing and regulation of interior design one only has to look at the mission creep of the interior design profession and its incursion upon the semantics of architecture. No wonder they accuse interior designers of trying to practice architecture without having to submit to the rigors of actually becoming a licensed architect. As predicted by this board, we now see the first of probably many citations to come against an individual for using the illegal title of interior architect.

here is the citation in full: LOS ANGELES—The Board issued a three-count citation that included a $6,000 administrative fine to Meng Lee Chin, an unlicensed individual, for alleged violations of BPC 5536(a) (Practice Without License or Holding Self Out as Architect). The action alleged that Chin has a website, "Mengdynasty.com," which advertises "Your One Stop for Architecture & Landscape Design." The website contains a page entitled "Creative Designs"

and lists Meng Design International ""Architecture | Interior | Landscape." Another website for Chin located at "mengdesignintl.wix.com/la " advertises Interior | Architecture | Landscape." The website states that Chin is an "Interior Architectect/(sic) Designer, " and contains pages which offer "Architectural Design" and "Interior Architecture Design Services." Chin is a member of "The Artist Conglomerate" located on the Internet at meetup.com/TheArtistConglomerate. The listing under the heading "Introduction" states "MENG DYNASTY" "Architecture | Interior | Landscape‌" The citation became final on January 21, 2015.

Two Great American CABINETMAKERS

Source for above at www.cab.ca.gov/consumers/enforcement_actions/c.shtml#MChin This is an instance where this person has a degree in interior architecture from a school in Chicago, and decided to use the title inferred by that degree. We know from experience that a lot of graduates from interior architecture programs in California also lean towards calling themselves interior architects because it stands to reason that if you graduate from an interior architecture program, you think you must be an interior architect! We have come across quite a few CIDs using this title, and have quickly educated them on the prospects of being cited by CAB. As you can see from the above, it is quite an expensive proposition. A word of caution for the schools! We have discussed with the CAB the legality of allowing the schools to call their programs interior architecture. CAB has researched this and told us they have absolutely no jurisdiction in this area and that the schools can call their programs whatever they wish to. It is the individuals emanating from these programs who are restricted by law as to what they can and cannot call themselves. It is basically an act of individual responsibility.

crystalcabinets.com

We will say, however, that if more people (and there will be more), are caught and cited and fined by CAB for using this term after graduating from one of these programs, and leave the school with the impression that it is okay to use such a title, there will be the possibility of some legal culpability on the part of the school. It would be beholden upon these schools, especially the ones in California to make it very clear to all students enrolling in their interior architecture programs to refrain from ever using that title. Even if a school disavows the use of this title, a faculty member advocating such could unwittingly or otherwise drag them into a protracted and expensive legal procedure with their former student attempting to collect recompense. Food for thought! Of course disavowing the title of the very course you are offering undermines the whole marketing concept and makes it somewhat moot. Why not change it back to interior design and avoid the whole possibility of conflict? A good suggestion for these schools would be to run this by your legal department before it blows back on you. The last word: CCIDC's position is aligned with that of CAB. We are interior designers, they are architects. There is no such thing as a hybrid between the two and there never will be. If you want to practice architecture then become an architect. If you want to practice interior design at a professional level, then become a Certified Interior Designer. That is your title as allowed by the state of California under the law through CCIDC.

“It feels very personal to me.” When Melinda was a young girl, her world was turned upside down by a sudden and unexpected admittance to the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. When the pediatrician told her parents, “go now, get checked in,” they went. In order to rush Melinda to the hospital, the family was in a moment uprooted, her Dad took time off work, and dinner plans with friends that evening were canceled. With two of her younger siblings in tow, her parents took turns sleeping in Melinda’s room, and they juggled their schedules to accommodate caring for all of their children. While this was very traumatic and hard on the family, they were fortunate to live in the area, which helped to soften the impact. For many families with children in the hospital, the situation can be even more stressful, with the added burden of pulling children out of school, flying in or sometimes driving for days from other parts of the country, and facing the possibility of paying top price for hotels in Silicon Valley. Some families have even resorted to sleeping in their cars in order to be near their children. The stress of the illness is difficult enough, including managing treatments, anticipating what each new day will bring, and finding the body’s “new normal”, so adding the logistics and dynamics of the family to the equation creates another challenge altogether.

Ronald McDonald House at Stanford has for many years helped to fill this need of providing a safe, comfortable and healing place for these families to rest, cook, and take care of the other siblings. Sometimes even the child taking treatments lives there, rather than staying in the hospital. In 1979, the Palo Alto House became the fifth facility in the national Ronald McDonald House system, with 13 rooms. In 1983 they were at almost 100% capacity. By 1984 they were turning people away. In 1992 they expanded to

24 rooms total. A decision was made to create a bone marrow transplant wing specifically for children with severely compromised immune systems. That wing is still being maintained. In 2003 the house was again expanded, this time to a 47-room facility. For the current 52,000-square-foot expansion project “Where Hope Has a Home,” The San Francisco Design Center has partnered with Ronald McDonald House at Stanford, selecting a number of design firms to provide pro bono interior design services for the 67 new guest rooms. The facility will be showcased to the public from February 13th through February 28th only, for a unique and limited opportunity to see the space. After that they will start filling the rooms with families. There are currently forty to fifty family members on waiting lists every night. The completion of this addition means that Ronald McDonald House at Stanford will be able to house all those families. Melinda has taken on three rooms: a sitting room serving a wing of the second floor, and two guest rooms. Each guest room accommodates one family, and includes a large bedroom with either two queen beds or one queen bed with a trundle, a dresser, one or two chairs, a closet, and an en suite bathroom. In certain cases cots can be provided for larger families (much like a typical hotel room). While there are no kitchenettes in the rooms themselves, there is a community kitchen on the main floor, with multiple cooktops, and a separate pantry space for each family. As a designer, Melinda’s goal was to create spaces that, “feel like home, but also a little bit of a retreat.” She wanted to create an environment that would help families heal, both physically and emotionally, from the upheaval and

trauma of what was going on, and to help alleviate some of the fear: “a safe, comfortable, and nurturing space.” To this end, she chose a neutral palette with soft grassy greens, watery blues, and russet reds as accent colors. She wanted the space to feel familiar, but also elicit a sense of, “this is really cool!” She used natural textures, beautiful woods, and washes of color, including a large-scale mural that looks like a watercolor painting. For durability, she selected high quality furniture pieces, ones that would hold up over the long term and could withstand busy family lives.

If you would like to help Melinda or any of the other designers to defray some of their costs, please contact them directly. Melinda reminds me that she is still raising funds to furnish the rooms. Designers are responsible for not only the design and procurement, but for covering the cost of all of the furnishings, as well. She is still looking for sponsors, for both large and small items. You can find a link to her donation page at www.melindamandell.com. As mentioned, the new facility will be open as a Design Tour from February 13th, through February 28th, 2016, Thursdays through Mondays from 10 to 3. Tickets are $35 each for adults, $10 suggested donation for children under 12. For tickets, please go to www.ronaldhouse.net, then to “Where Hope Has a Home Design Tours”, and hit “Click to Purchase Your Tickets”.

The project has been quite an undertaking, and for Melinda especially, it’s been a labor of love. We appreciate and commend Melinda and our other members for this example of interior designers giving back to the community! CA PENINSULA CHAPTER | ISSue IV - 17 -
