“It’s Not Easy Being Green – Or is it?” by Anna Harrison, ASID, LEED AP Currently, we are experiencing a loss of biodiversity on a scale not seen since the last great extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs and left us with “black gold”. Fossil fuels that we have been happily burning, emitting so called “greenhouse gases”, without realizing that doing so was setting in motion a series of positive feedback loops that are rendering our soil infertile, our fresh water sources depleted, and our air unbreathable. We know the built environment is responsible for 60% of the greenhouse gas emissions that accumulate in the atmosphere like a down comforter warming the planet. As interior designers we care about the built environment, which is our domain. Does this means we, the creators of the built environment are responsible? As our clients’ trusted consultants, we LISTEN, provide GUIDANCE and REASSURE them. Designers address their clients’ challenges and exceed expectations to create healthy, beautiful, and functional environments. Designers deliver services by the tools of their profession, education, experience and supported by our codes of ethics and conduct. ASID is a vital resource of tools and continuing education. The connection between the human habitat and our profession is forged by our PASSION for design and excellence. Responsibility to our clients does not cease when the final furniture piece arrives, the pillows are plumped and the curtains hung. Our responsibility also extends to the methods used to grow the fibers of the fabric we specify, product specification, method of transportation by

which a sofa traveled, the conditions of the workers who sewed the seams on the drapery, and the final resting place of materials at the end of their useful life. On April 25, 2014 when you attend the REGREEN Implementation Workshop which is based on the REGREEN Residential Remodeling Guidelines ©, a set of sustainability best practices that emphasizes green product selection, team integration and whole-systems thinking, your PASSION will be RE-IGNITED! You will leave with tools to augment your work with the peace of mind that comes with the knowledge that you do no harm when you practice your profession. REGREEN is the result of a collaborative effort between ASID and USGBC to bring our members the BEST, most relevant and useful tools to respond to the undisputable reality of global climate change. The workshop is taught by Annette Stelmack, Allied ASID, LEED AP BD+C, USGBC LEED Faculty, sustainable design consultant at InspiritLLC and co-author of Sustainable Residential Interiors. In short, you can rest assured that this workshop is a wise investment for designers who want to create sustainable healthy interiors. It is an indication of the great respect for our design community that we, your 2013-2014 Board offer you REGREEN as the first Chapter on the West Coast to offer this program and the fourth Chapter in the United States! We look forward to seeing you at REGREEN! SPACE IS LIMITED – do not hesitate and REGISTER early. See our flyer page 11 .

In Memoriam - Clarellen Adams 1921-2014 Clarellen Adams passed peacefully in her San Mateo home on Sunday, January 12th, with her family surrounding her. Clarellen was born Claire Ellen Gronna on January 5, 1921, in Waukon, Iowa. She was raised on her family's farm, which was homesteaded in the mid-18th century by her Norwegian ancestors. At Iowa State University, Clarellen was a home economics major with an art minor, and played guard on the women's basketball team. After graduation, she moved to San Francisco, where she met Henry Adams at a dance on Treasure Island. They wed in 1949, making their home initially in San Francisco, and then in Berkeley and Corte Madera before settling in Hillsborough. Henry Adams, for whom a San Francisco street was named by then Mayor Dianne Feinstein in 1981 after his untimely death, was the developer of what is now known as the San Francisco Design Center. While he was alive, Clarellen was, undoubtedly, his right-hand woman, always at his side as they worked to revive lost and forgotten old warehouses in the South of Market area of San Francisco. Together, Clarellen and Henry created a design and home furnishings hub that became the envy of other city's design centers and inspired other cities to develop their own design centers. After Henry's passing in 1981, Clarellen became Vice President of Industry Relationships at the San Francisco Design Center. As a champion of the design community, she was very active in ASID (American Society of Interior

Designers), both locally and nationally. She was the inspiration for many philanthropic undertakings that engaged the talents of interior and fashion designers in creative endeavors that would give both interior designers and designer showrooms increased visibility, while benefitting organizations such as DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS), ASID, At the Crossroads, and cancer research. She also provided scholarships to top design students enrolled in Cañada College's interior design program. She travelled the world, often with ASID, or with the Chamber of Commerce to promote our beautiful city. Clarellen will be remembered for her boundless energy, her colorful style, her bright smile, her fabulous parties, her love of design, travel, and golf, her love of dogs, and her generous spirit. She is survived by her two children, John Adams and Barbara Whiteside Crary; her son-in-law John Crary; her dear friend David Whiteside; her three granddaughters, Amber Whiteside Favetti, Abigail Whiteside, and Paige Whiteside; and her two great-granddaughters, Mia and Lilah Favetti. Donations can be made in Clarellen's name to At the Crossroads, DIFFA, or ASID: At The Crossroads: Clarellen Adams Memorial Fund, 333 Valencia Street, Suite 320, San Francisco, CA 94103 (Make out checks to At the Crossroads). www.atthecrossroads.org DIFFA - Attn: Randall Shields 140 Laguna Street, San Francisco, CA 94102; and, ASID: www.asidfoundation.org/CONTRIBUTE.html www.asid.org/shelter

From our members... If the San Francisco Design Center had a face, it would be that of Clarellen Adams. At her Celebration of Life service held in the Galleria Atrium, someone pointed out that the street named after her late husband Henry Adams, should really be called Henry and Clarellen Adams Street. While Henry had the vision, Clarellen was the spark. After Henry died in 1981, Clarellen became Vice President of Industry Relationships at the Design Center. Effervesceut and enthusiastic, she lit up a room. The first time I met Clarellen was at my first Stimulus Conference at Asilomar. At the Sawrday night cosntme party, Clarellen arrived dressed as a cheerleader, complete with short pleated skirt and pompoms. Even more remarkable, this was her very own high school cheerleading outfit, still a perfect fit! During my term as Chapter President, the National Conference was held in Orlando. Clarellen, always supportive of ASID, was part of my "California Girls" dance troupe, as we auctioned off a whimsical sweatshirt for FIDER, dancing to Beach Boys' music. In addition to her tireless support of the design community, Clarellen supported many philanthropic causes, including the ASID Foundation, DIFFA, At the Crossroads, and cancer research. She provided scholarships to top design students at Canada College. She enjoyed Giants' games (often attending with Tia Garvey), golf, dogs, entertaining, and travel. Clarellen is survived by two childreu, John Adams and Barbara Whiteside Crary; son-in-law John Crary; good friend David Whiteside; granddaughters Amber Whiteside Favetti, Abigail Whiteside, and Paige Whiteside; and great-granddaughters Mia and Lilah Favetti. Thank you, Clarellen, for your generosity and for being our head cheerleader. We will miss you. – Mary Ann McEwan,ASID, CID, MBA, Past Chapter President 1992-1993 ------------------------------Clarellen had boundless energy and loved being with people...she was always the life of any party...we shared many rides to evening ASID events [she didn't like to drive at night] and would quiz us if we had any scoop to include in the SFDC news...and she always had stories to tell. She was a great support to ASID - she

seemed so humble and sweet but was invaluable to networking in our design community. She will be missed... – Linda Kay DeMartini, ASID, Past President – CA Peninsula Chapter 1998-1999 ------------------------------She did not like to talk about her age, always responded by holding her hand up and saying “I’m 5…” – Luba Fox, ASID, CID, Past Chapter President 2002-2003 ------------------------------Clarellen was the best friend and supporter of design students that one could hope for; she knew these were the next generation of interior designers. She helped students and design programs in the bay area in a variety of ways, financially, and in kind donations. Clarellen served for many years on the Canada College Interior Design Advisory Committee, attended graduation and awards events there as well, encouraging and congratulating students. Her support of the San Francisco Student Career Forum was tremendous, getting the support of the SFDC as well as donations for drawing prizes from the SFDC showrooms, along with attending and promoting the event to all who would listen. Her enthusiasm, love of color, and red boots are probably what most students who attended the Career Forum remember about Clarellen. I am honored to have known and worked with her; she will be sorely missed.” – Nancy Wolford, Ph.d., Retired Department Chair, Canada College ------------------------------My memory of Clarellen is of a whirlwind. I've never met any one with so much energy and enthusiasm for life. If she wasn't out golfing with her man posse, the only women, she was off to an event. She showed up at almost all the ASID celebrations as a wonderful supporter. – Pamela Pennington ASID, Past President 1986-1987 sometime in the 80's

2014 Home Technology – A Designer Friendly Year Every designer should be enthusiastic about 2014 Home Technology

and more companies are introducing models based on this WISA tech-

opportunities. Every relevant company has heard the cries for elegance,

nology. It’s clear that increasing numbers of consumers have raised their

simplicity, and affordability. The best of them are responding in mean-

sound quality expectations now that it’s possible to have elegance and

ingful ways. Here’s the highlights coming on the heels of the 2014

audio refinement simultaneously.

Consumer Electronics Show. Smart Home technology is steadily evolving while becoming the new wild west. Previously associated with expensive high end proprietary systems, cost effective innovations are coming from the traditional players, cable providers, alarm companies, and other sources. A single company, NEST, is introducing the possibilities to mainstream consumers via their Web-controlled thermostat and its “Next Protect” smart Smoke Detector which allows you to turn it off with a hand wave and send phone / tablet alerts identifying the presence and location of the alert. I have observed that the triggers for smart home technology vary by client so that a particular function, say security, lights, or energy management seem to drive its use, not the pursuit of the “Jetsons Residence”.

The first big innovation is 4K TV and its sudden emergence as an affordable upgrade. In short, 4K provides four times the pixels compared to today’s 1080p displays. Because a client can comfortably view a 65” display from as little as 5 feet away, there are implications for room layouts. Conversely, an immense 80-90” display will appear far more detailed when view at more traditional viewing distances. Because the prices are falling so rapidly, you can expect more of your clients to bring up 4K as part of your design considerations. One of the major challenges has been the ability to deliver 4K TV shows and moviews via today’s internet. Recently, Netflix confirmed it will be able to stream 4k quality over most families’ internet data plans so there will be plenty to watch on these next generation displays.
