ASID
is a wonderful organization, which has reached out to thousands of members for forty plus years. Every year growth has stimulated communication amongst designers, our industry partners and our students. We all learn so much from each other, which in turn creates and includes various surprises.
President’s Letter
I joined in 1984. Who would have believed that I would be sitting in this position thirty-three years later? This is just amazing, and I am so honored to have this opportunity. Together we will have a wonderful year where we will acquire great knowledge regarding the growth of design. Design Impacts Life is the first Pillar of the Strategic Plan. It is true. It does impact life, whether it is in a small or large home, an office, a medical facility, a hotel or even a factory, or a sailing vessel. Health, Safety and Welfare have always been the most important phase of design I have applied to all of my design projects. ASID National is supporting this aspect as one of the largest points of life. In putting this status of design as first, we need to know about our client’s needs, physically and mentally, as well as their preferences, when we begin their projects. Another Pillar that is being spotted nationally is Diversity and Inclusion. California Peninsula Chapter of ASID starts at South San Francisco and goes all the way through Monterey. Here in Silicon Valley we are lucky to live in communities that are so diverse. Working together benefits creative ideas and stimulates terrific solutions. Because of the technology industry, we hear the word, “innovation”, used over and over. Innovation is not secluded to the tech world. Innovation is creativity and describes Interior Design and Art. Please, don’t hold yourself back. Be a creative and innovative Interior Designer. Being the President-Elect last year, I saw the Board of Directors as the leaders of our chapter. They were very supportive and hard working, successful in whatever they were doing. Now that I am President, there are some board members that are new this year and have already jumped onto the wagon to have fun going into another successful year. Having served as president on four other non-profit boards, this one is the hardest working, with professional outcomes. I am so impressed. If you are inclined to learn from our leaders, I encourage you to join any of the committees that work on management, event planning, and many other activities that will show you what it is like being a leader. I am watching the new fiscal year and had a great kickoff with the board members who are making things work so quickly! We started this FY2018 with an exciting chapter event that got those who attended three CEU’s toward their requirement at the end of this year. Steve Nobel of Nobelinks gave an inspiring presentation on Entrepreneurship: Money & Mojo Matter. He emphasized how important it is to have a strong, personal, and comfortable relationship with our clients. He had us relaxed and laughing, while we learned of amazing directions to take our businesses, and actually grow financially. The feedback has been very positive. A couple of things to look forward to are the celebrations at the Winter Ball and the Design Excellence Awards. There will be many other events that we all can learn from and earn CEUs. Patricia B. McDonald, ASID, CID ASID CA Peninsula/Silicon Valley Chapter President 2017-2018

MEMBER
Yukari Haitani
By Mary Ann McEwan, ASID, CID, MBA Yukari has spunk. We like spunk. Yukari Haitani, Allied ASID, CID, CBD, CKD, is our most recent Past President, and owner of Haitani Design. She is a native of Japan, and it was there that she met her husband Rob, who was in Japan for five years with Sony. They married in 1987. He was transferred back to the U.S., but Yukari was not sure she wanted to make the move. After a year he had an appendicitis attack, so Yukari decided to come over to take care of him. It was then that she had her first interior design project. Her husband’s apartment was sparsely furnished: there was a bed, a TV, and not much else. The remote control for the TV was buried somewhere in the space. Yukari laughs when she remembers, “We never did find that remote!” Luckily for us, Yukari decided to stay. In Japan, Yukari had worked for a high-end fabric manufacturer, as a temp at Sony, where she met Rob, for Booz Allen Hamilton, where she put together reports for the consultants, and then did marketing for Milliken, when their modular carpeting was being manufactured in Japan. When she came here, she admits her English was not very good. Her degree had been in French literature. She got a job with Tokyo Electron, first as an administrative assistant, then in a procurement role. Later she worked as an executive secretary for the president of the AKT division of Applied Materials. While still working, she took one class at a time at the UC Santa Cruz Extension Interior Design Assistant program, a curriculum started by the late Martha Miller Girdlestone. Martha taught the Intro class, and told her that she had a gift for interior design. Yukari never quite finished that program, but in 2000 she was able to quit working, and in 2001 began taking classes full time at Cañada. She took some English classes there, as well, and her English greatly improved. Each interior design class required an oral presentation, further helping her English. She took all the core classes (the UC Extension courses did not transfer), plus the Kitchen and Bath coursework and the Commercial/Residential curriculum.
design is the bathroom, because she enjoys fitting everything a client wants in a compact area. Yukari told me that while she can design in many styles, she does like the clean lines of the Japanese aesthetic. She noted that everything in Japanese culture is not Zen, that color and pattern are also very important. The kimono, for example, layers pattern on pattern, and Japanese temple designs incorporate a lot of gold and silver elements. For her own projects, Yukari always uses the client’s favorite colors, rather than imposing her own. Yukari greatly appreciates Cañada College, and the American system of education, particularly the community college opportunities. She also credits her parents, who raised her to be independent. She went to a very good western-style private school. After college, it was not a common goal for women to work. Without the type of education she had there, her life would have been more challenging here, she notes. She says her life in Japan brought about her interest in interior design, but it was her opportunities here which caused it to flourish. She appreciates her many friends and the network she built here.
While at Cañada she served as SRB (Student Rep to the Board), then became the ASID Student President there in 2004-05. She graduated in 2005, but needed two years’ experience before taking the NKBA exam. She worked as an intern for a kitchen company in Menlo Park. Yukari found it a fantastic opportunity to hone her skills and learn about detail work in cabinetry, plumbing, and other elements. She passed the NKBA exam in 2009.
We appreciate Yukari’s service to the chapter, serving as President, as well as planning, organizing and leading a well-received tour of Japan in March of 2017. The ASID connection was valuable in that several factories opened up for special tours: Toto, Kawashima Selkon (a fabric weaving manufacturer), and Chiso (a kimono fabric company, founded in 1555). A synopsis of the tour was presented by Denny Holland as a CEU, so the rest of us could be armchair travelers and share the experience. Thank you, Yukari, for having the spunk to make this happen!
Yukari took three semesters of AutoCad at UC Berkeley Extension, then learned Chief Architect so that she could incorporate 3D images. She does only residential design. She can redraw an entire house, but always asks the client to hire an architect when moving exterior walls. One of her favorite spaces to
Yukari will be moving back to Japan in the Spring of 2018 to join her husband, who was transferred there for two to five years. They plan to move back to the U.S. after that. Yukari, we wish you all the best in your next ventures, and look forward to your return to the U.S.!

Memoriam
Martha Miller Girdlestone 12/05/1933 - 9/05/2017
By Mary Ann McEwan, ASID, CID, MBA
Martha Miller Girdlestone, Allied ASID, touched the lived of many of us in the Peninsula Chapter, as a colleague, instructor, friend, and mentor. She passed away at home on September 5th, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She will be missed. A Celebration of Life for her was held on October 7th at Trinity Presbyterian Church in San Carlos.
When Martha was 12, her teacher asked the class to write an essay on, “What I want to be when I grow up”, and Martha didn’t hesitate with her answer. At the reception after the service, Martha’s daughters Carrie Miller Drake and Ellyn Miller Davis displayed that essay, along with other mementos and photos of Martha’s life. On lined paper, with perfect handwriting, Martha wrote that she wanted to be an interior decorator. She described what that meant, what skills were required, and even described a possible scenario with a client project. Martha was an only child, born in Indiana, where she studied piano, and excelled in reading, poetry and art. She wanted to go to college at one of the design schools specializing in interior design, but her father was an alumnus of Indiana University, and strongly encouraged her to go there. While they had no interior design program, she earned a degree in Art History, the closest substitute. She married in 1956, and she and her husband Bob Miller moved to Tustin, California, where they raised their daughters. Martha launched her interior design practice there, later called Design Trends, Inc., and was largely selftaught. She obtained her teaching credential and taught part-time at Santa Ana College. In the 1970s she became the national trainer for The Broadway Department Stores and Wesco Fabrics, lecturing to retail and industry groups throughout the United States. In 1977, the family moved to Los Altos Hills, and Martha went back to school and earned her masters degree in Educational Administration. She was the founding director of the Interior Design program at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco, building the B.F.A. curriculum and earning FIDER (now CIDA) accreditation for the program. She served as Director there for twelve years. She left that position and joined the interior design faculty at Cañada College. In addition, she developed Interior Design Assistant programs at U.C. Santa Cruz Extension and U.C. San Diego Extension. Nancy Wolford, Ph.D., CID, notes that she and Martha were both members of IDEC (Interior Design Educators Council). Martha “reinstated the NKBA Accredited Program status for the Kitchen and Bath Design Program” at - 14 - ISSue III 2017 | CA PENINSULA/SILICON VALLEY CHAPTER
Cañada College. She was, “a great mentor. I owe her so much for the success of the Interior Design program (and my becoming full-time faculty) at Cañada College.” Nancy describes Martha as, “ enthusiastic and knowledgeable…quite a woman, an inspiration to us all.” Fellow educator and friend Sharon Kasser, ASID, remembers Martha fondly, noting she was a “dear friend, a noted educator and administrator, and an established interior designer in Northern California…An extraordinary teacher, Martha’s wit, charm and knowledge filled every class. Many of our best San Francisco designers were mentored by this dynamic woman,” who “willingly shared her vast knowledge with her colleagues.” Sharon further remembers that, “Martha had style! She dressed with class and designed a beautiful home…Valentine’s Day was a favorite holiday,” with a “table set with china and flowers from her prized garden,” and “gifts for each guest.” “Martha was unique! I will remember her lovely smile and her wonderful deep laugh. She was a dear friend.” Lilley Yee, ASID, notes that many years ago Martha started an alumni group at Cañada College, as a way for graduates to stay in touch and share ideas. Penny Chin, ASID, CID, was also involved in the group from the beginning, and both she and Lilley continued to stay in touch with Martha. Yukari Haitani, Allied ASID, CID, CBD, CKD, credits Martha and her encouragement for part of her own success, as well. Divorced for several years, in 2000 Martha met Howard Girdlestone of San Carlos, and they were married in 2002. She retired “for good” in 2007. They were together for fifteen years, until his passing in 2016. In retirement, Martha loved spending time with her family, including her daughters, son-in-law William Hulsey, and grandsons Ted and Evan Davis. She enjoyed gardening and entertaining, playing the piano at Filoli, volunteering for the American Red Cross, and traveling. It’s clear that Martha has left both a personal and professional legacy, which will continue to inspire others.
